RESUMEN

Introduction: Lateral lymph node dissection (LLND) has now been widely accepted as the optimal procedure to minimize lateral local recurrence (LLR) for selected cases with advanced lower rectal cancer in Asian countries. However, there is still controversy over the preservation or resection of the inferior vesical vessels (IVVs) during LLND due to concerns of impaired post-operative urinary function. Moreover, the standardized procedure for autonomic nerve preservation has not yet been established. Aim: To evaluate the early-stage postoperative voiding function in patients who underwent LLND with uni- versus bilateral resection of the IVVs and to introduce an autonomic nerve sparing technique with a fascial space priority approach (FSPA). Material and methods: LLND was performed in 106 consecutive patients with advanced low rectal cancer at Tianjin Union Medical Center from May 2017 to October 2022. Prospectively collected clinical data were retrospectively compared between patients who received uni-lateral and bilateral LLND. A video with narration was provided to introduce the stepwise procedure of autonomic nerve preservation during IVV resection. Results: The unilateral lymph node dissection (LND) group and the bilateral LND group included 75 and 31 cases, respectively. All LLNDs were performed with FSPA with IVV resection as a standard procedure. No significant differences were observed in overall catheterization days (p = 0.336) and re-catheterization rate (p = 0.575) between groups. No patients in either group suffered from long-term (≥ 30 days) voiding dysfunction. Conclusions: Autonomic nerve sparing is achievable with resection of IVVs during LLND. Satisfactory early-stage voiding function could be obtained with IVV resection on both sides.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The latest national survey on the distribution of human parasites in China demonstrated that Guangdong was among the endemic provinces with the highest Clonorchis sinensis infection rates. High-resolution, age- and gender-specific risk maps of the temporal and spatial distributions are essential for the targeted control work. METHODS: Disease data on the prevalence of C. sinensis infection from 1990 onwards, either age- and gender-specific or aggregated across age and gender, were collected through systematic review and four large-scale surveys in Guangdong Province. Environmental and socioeconomic variables were obtained from open-access databases and employed as potential predictors. A Bayesian geostatistical model was developed to estimate the C. sinensis infection risk at high spatial resolution. RESULTS: The final dataset included 606 surveys at 463 unique locations for C. sinensis infection. Our findings suggested that following an initial increase and stabilization, the overall population-adjusted prevalence had declined to 2.2% (95% Bayesian credible interval: 1.7-3.0%) in the period of 2015 onwards. From 2015 onwards, moderate and high infection risks were found in the northern regions (e.g. Heyuan and Shaoguan cities) and the southern Pearl River Delta (e.g. Foshan, Zhongshan, Zhuhai and Jiangmen cities), respectively. Age- and gender-specific risk maps revealed that males had a higher infection risk than females, and the infection risk was higher in adults compared to children. CONCLUSIONS: Our high-resolution risk maps of C. sinensis infection in Guangdong Province identified the spatial, temporal, age and gender heterogeneities, which can provide useful information assisting tailored control strategies.

RESUMEN

The development of urea oxidation reaction (UOR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) bifunctional electrocatalysts has dual significance in promoting hydrogen energy production and urea-rich wastewater treatment. Herein, a carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT-COOH)-ferrocene carboxylic acid (Fc-COOH) modulated NiMOF hybrid material (MWCNT-NiMOF(Fc)) has been synthesized for dual electrocatalysis of the UOR and OER. The material characterization results indicated that MWCNT-COOH and Fc-COOH were integrated into the framework structure of the NiMOF. The direct interaction between the NiMOF and MWCNT/Fc facilitated electron transfer in the hybrid material and led to lattice strain, which improved the charge transfer kinetics, promoted the exposure of more unsaturated Ni sites, and increased the electrochemically active surface area. These factors together enhanced the electrocatalytic activity of MWCNT-NiMOF(Fc) towards the UOR and OER. Using a glassy carbon electrode as the substrate, MWCNT-NiMOF(Fc) exhibited low potential requirements, low Tafel slopes, and high stability. In overall urea and water splitting electrolysis cells, the excellent UOR and OER dual functional catalytic ability and enormous practical application potential of the MWCNT-NiMOF(Fc) modified foam nickel electrode were further demonstrated. On the basis of the above research, the influence of a KOH environment on urea electrolysis was further studied, and the urea electrolysis products were analyzed, promoting a more comprehensive understanding of the catalytic performance of MWCNT-NiMOF(Fc) for urea oxidation. This study provides a new approach for developing high-performance NiMOF-based electrocatalysts for challenging bifunctional UOR/OER applications, and has potential application value in hydrogen production from urea-containing wastewater electrolysis.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to explore the clinical value of a radiomics prediction model based on T2-weighted imaging (T2WI) and clinical indexes in predicting lateral lymph node (LLN) metastasis in rectal cancer patients. METHODS: This was a retrospective analysis of 106 rectal cancer patients who had undergone LLN dissection. The clinical risk factors for LLN metastasis were selected by multivariable logistic regression analysis of the clinical indicators of the patients. The LLN radiomics features were extracted from the pelvic T2WI of the patients. The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator algorithm and backward stepwise regression method were adopted for feature selection. Three LLN metastasis prediction models were established through logistic regression analysis based on the clinical risk factors and radiomics features. Model performance was assessed in terms of discriminability and decision curve analysis in the training, verification and test sets. RESULTS: The model based on the combined T2WI radiomics features and clinical risk factors demonstrated the highest accuracy, surpassing the models based solely on either T2WI radiomics features or clinical risk factors. Specifically, the model achieved an AUC value of 0.836 in the test set. Decision curve analysis revealed that this model had the greatest clinical utility for the vast majority of the threshold probability range from 0.4 to 1.0. CONCLUSION: Combining T2WI radiomics features with clinical risk factors holds promise for the noninvasive assessment of the biological characteristics of the LLNs in rectal cancer, potentially aiding in therapeutic decision-making and optimizing patient outcomes.

RESUMEN

Cold drawing, a well-established processing technique in the polymer industry, was recently revisited and discovered as an efficient material structuring method to create ordered patterns in composites consisting of both cold-drawable polymers and brittle target materials. Such a high-yield and low-cost manufacturing technique enables the large-scale fabrication of micro-ribbon structures for a wide range of functional materials, including two-dimensional (2D) layered materials. Compared to the abundant phenomenological results from experiments, however, the underlying mechanisms of this technique are not fully explored. Here, supported by experimental investigation, finite element calculations, and theoretical modeling, we systematically study the effect of a capping layer on the controlled fragmentation of 2D materials deposited on polymer substrates during the cold drawing. The capping layer is found to prevent the premature fracture of the 2D thin films during elastic deformation of the substrate, when a specific requirement proposed by the theoretical model is satisfied. Controlled fragmentation is enabled in the necking stage due to the protective effect of the capping layer, which also influences the size of the resulting fragments. Flexible and stretchable electrodes based on 2D material ribbons are fabricated to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed roadmap. This study gives an accurate understanding of interactions between 2D materials, polymer substrates, and capping layers during cold drawing, and offers guidance for potential applications such as flexible electronics.

RESUMEN

Due to its inversion-broken triple helix structure and the nature of Weyl semiconductor, 2D Tellurene (2D Te) is promising to possess a strong nonlinear optical response in the infrared region, which is rarely reported in 2D materials. Here, a giant nonlinear infrared response induced by large Berry curvature dipole (BCD) is demonstrated in the Weyl semiconductor 2D Te. Ultrahigh second-harmonic generation response is acquired from 2D Te with a large second-order nonlinear optical susceptibility (χ(2) ), which is up to 23.3 times higher than that of monolayer MoS2 in the range of 700-1500 nm. Notably, distinct from other 2D nonlinear semiconductors, χ(2) of 2D Te increases extraordinarily with increasing wavelength and reaches up to 5.58 nm V-1 at ≈2300 nm, which is the best infrared performance among the reported 2D nonlinear materials. Large χ(2) of 2D Te also enables the high-intensity sum-frequency generation with an ultralow continuous-wave (CW) pump power. Theoretical calculations reveal that the exceptional performance is attributed to the presence of large BCD located at the Weyl points of 2D Te. These results unravel a new linkage between Weyl semiconductor and strong optical nonlinear responses, rendering 2D Te a competitive candidate for highly efficient nonlinear 2D semiconductors in the infrared region.

RESUMEN

Objective: This study aimed to explore the genes regulating lymph node metastasis in colorectal cancer (CRC) and to clarify their relationship with tumor immune cell infiltration and patient prognoses. Methods: The data sets of CRC patients were collected through the Cancer Gene Atlas database; the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) associated with CRC lymph node metastasis were screened; a protein-protein interaction (PPI) network was constructed; the top 20 hub genes were selected; the Gene Ontology functions and the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathways were enriched and analyzed. The Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) regression method was employed to further screen the characteristic genes associated with CRC lymph node metastasis in 20 hub genes, exploring the correlation between the characteristic genes and immune cell infiltration, conducting a univariate COX analysis on the characteristic genes, obtaining survival-related genes, constructing a risk score formula, conducting a Kaplan-Meier analysis based on the risk score formula, and performing a multivariate COX regression analysis on the clinical factors and risk scores. Results: A total of 62 DEGs associated with CRC lymph node metastasis were obtained. Among the 20 hub genes identified via PPI, only calcium-activated chloride channel regulator 1 (CLCA1) expression was down-regulated in lymph node metastasis, and the rest were up-regulated. A total of nine characteristic genes associated with CRC lymph node metastasis (KIF1A, TMEM59L, CLCA1, COL9A3, GDF5, TUBB2B, STMN2, FOXN1, and SCN5A) were screened using the LASSO regression method. The nine characteristic genes were significantly related to different kinds of immune cell infiltration, from which three survival-related genes (TMEM59L, CLCA1, and TUBB2B) were screened. A multi-factor COX regression showed that the risk scores obtained from TMEM59L, CLCA1, and TUBB2B were independent prognostic factors. Immunohistochemical validation was performed in tissue samples from patients with rectal and colon cancer. Conclusion: TMEM59L, CLCA1, and TUBB2B were independent prognostic factors associated with lymphatic metastasis of CRC.

RESUMEN

In this paper, an ultra-wideband and polarization-insensitive frequency-selective surface absorber is presented with oblique incident stable behavior. Different from conventional absorbers, the absorption behavior is much less deteriorated with the increase in the incidence angle. Two hybrid resonators, which are realized by symmetrical graphene patterns, are employed to obtain the desired broadband and polarization-insensitive absorption performance. The optimal impedance-matching behavior is designed at the oblique incidence of electromagnetic waves, and an equivalent circuit model is used to analyze and facilitate the mechanism of the proposed absorber. The results indicate that the absorber can maintain a stable absorption performance with a fractional bandwidth (FWB) of 136.4% up to 40°. With these performances, the proposed UWB absorber could be more competitive in aerospace applications.

RESUMEN

Metal-organic framework (MOF) materials exhibit unique advantages in adsorption, pre-enrichment and selective recognition of heavy metal ions due to their porous nature, tunable structure and ease of functionalization. However, due to the poor conductivity and electrochemical activity of most MOFs, their application in electrochemical sensing is limited. In this paper, an electroactive hybrid material rGO/UiO-bpy composed of UiO-bpy and electrochemically reduced graphene oxide (rGO) was prepared and has been successfully used in the electrochemical determination of lead ions (Pb2+). Interestingly, a reverse response relationship between the electrochemical signal of UiO-bpy and the concentration of Pb2+ was discovered in the experiment, which can be used to develop a novel on-off ratiometric sensing strategy for Pb2+ detection. To our knowledge, this is the first time that UiO-bpy has been used as both an improved electrode material for heavy metal ion detection and an internal reference probe for ratiometric analysis. This study is of great significance to expand the electrochemical application of UiO-bpy and develop innovative electrochemical ratiometric sensing strategies for Pb2+ determination.

RESUMEN

Introduction: In this prospective observational study, we aimed to evaluate the consequences of laparoscopic fascia space priority lymph node dissection on urination and sexual function. Aim: To assess the consequences of laparoscopic lateral lymph node dissection (LLND) using the fascial space priority approach on urinary and sexual function in patients with advanced middle and low rectal cancer. Material and methods: Consecutive patients undergoing laparoscopic LLND using the fascial space priority approach from December 2020 to November 2022 were identified from Tianjin Union Medical Center. Clinical data including patient characteristics, surgical details, and pathology were analysed. The urinary function was assessed by international prostate symptom score (IPSS) questionnaire and residual urine volume. The sexual function was investigated using the international index of erectile function (IIEF) questionnaire. Results: A total of 51 patients, mean age 60.5 ±10.9 years, were identified. The lymph nodes were positive in 70.6% (36/51) of the patients. There was no significant difference between the preoperative IPSS score and that at 6 months (5.2 ±2.1 vs. 5.6 ±1.5; p = 0.16). And there was no significant difference between the residual urine volume and that at 6 months (9.5 ±10.6 vs. 8.6 ±6.3; p = 0.61). The IIEF score before the surgery showed no significant difference from that at 6 months after the surgery (21.1 ±2.2 vs. 20.6 ±2.3; p = 0.26). Conclusions: Laparoscopic LLND using a fascial space priority approach can effectively protect the autonomic nerves. The procedure reduces short-term urination and sexual function, but it has little effect on long-term function.

RESUMEN

Objective: The aim of this study was to explore the potential biological mechanisms of coix seed in the treatment of colorectal cancer (CRC) based on network pharmacology analysis. Methods: The active components of coix seed and their potential action targets were retrieved from Traditional Chinese Medicine Systems Pharmacology Database and Analysis Platform(TCMSP). The disease targets related to CRC were obtained from the DisGeNET database. The intersection targets of the drug targets and disease targets were selected, and a component-target-disease network was built using Cytoscape 3.8.0 tool. A global network of the core target protein interactions was constructed using String database. Biological function analysis and pathway enrichment analysis of core targets were conducted to explore the potential. Results: A total of nine active components were obtained from the TCMSP database corresponding to 37 targets. Further analysis showed that 18 overlapping targets were associated with CRC. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment analysis was conducted based on the 18 targets and 11 significantly enriched signaling pathways implicated in CRC were identified. Conclusion: The multicomponent and multitarget characteristics of coix seed are preliminarily verified, and the potential biological mechanisms of coix seed in the treatment of CRC are predicted, which provides a theoretical basis for the experimental research.

RESUMEN

Dual-mode bioanalysis integrating photoelectrochemical (PEC) and other modes is emerging and allows signal cross-checking for more reliable results. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been shown to be attractive materials in various biological applications. This work presents the utilization of MOF encapsulation and stimuli-responsive decapsulation for dual-mode PEC and fluorescence (FL) bioanalysis. Photoactive dye methylene violet (MV) was encapsulated in zeolitic imidazolate framework-90 (ZIF-90) to form an MV@ZIF-90 hybrid material, and MV could be released by adenosine triphosphate (ATP)-induced ZIF-90 disintegration. The released MV not only had FL emission but also had a sensitization effect on the ZnIn2S4 (ZnInS) photoanode. Based on the MV-dependent sensitization effect and FL emission characteristic, a dual-mode PEC-FL strategy was established for ATP detection with low detection limits, that is, 3.2 and 4.1 pM for PEC and FL detection, respectively. This study features and will inspire the construction and implementation of smart MOF materials for dual-mode bioanalysis.

RESUMEN

Clonorchiasis is an important food-borne parasitic disease caused by Clonorchis sinensis infection. The evaluation of long-term cost-effectiveness of control strategies is important for disease control and prevention. The present study aimed to assess the cost-effectiveness of the three recommended strategies (i.e., WHO, Chinese and Guangdong strategies) and different combinations of commonly used measures (i.e., preventive chemotherapy, information, education, and communication (IEC) and environmental improvement) on clonorchiasis. The study area, Fusha town in Guangdong Province, was a typical high endemic area in China. The analysis was based on a multi-group transmission model of C. sinensis infection. We set the intervention duration for 10 years and post-intervention period for 50 years. The corresponding costs and DALYs were estimated. Strategies with incremental cost-effectiveness ratios (ICERs) less than 1/5 of the willingness-to-pay threshold were identified as highly cost-effective strategies. The optimal control strategy was obtained using the next best comparator method. The ICERs of Guangdong strategy were $172 (95% CI: $143-$230) US for praziquantel and $106 (95% CI: $85-$143) US for albendazole, suggesting the highest cost-effectiveness among the three recommended strategies. For praziquantel, 470 sets of control strategies were identified as highly cost-effective strategies for achieving infection control (prevalence<5%). The optimal strategy consisted of chemotherapy targeted on at-risk population, IEC and environmental improvement, with coverages all being 100%, and with the ICER of $202 (95% CI: $168-$271) US. The results for transmission control (prevalence<1%) and albendazole were obtained with the same procedures. The findings may help to develop control policies for C. sinensis infection in high endemic areas. Moreover, the method adopted is applicable for assessment of optimal strategies in other endemic areas.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Total pelvic exenteration (TPE) with intent to achieve a pathological R0 resection is now considered as the only chance of a long-term survival for locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC) invading into adjacent organs. Lately, laparoscopic total pelvic exenteration (LTPE) is performed and achieved in several specialized centers and showed a promising application prospect. Although this is universally realized by surgeons, there are only few specialized centers to perform this complex surgery, due to concerns about the high morbidity and mortality. The techniques associated need to be disclosed and facilitated. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this article is to introduce a fascial space priority approach for laparoscopic TPE step by step (with video). METHODS: We describe here a fascial space priority approach for LTPE in highly selected patients with locally advanced rectal cancer. The main principle of this approach is that all of the pelvic organs are considered as a whole, the non-vascular spaces surrounding it are separated in the first place, the vascular pedicle and nerve pedicle of pelvic organs can be isolated and then transected precisely. Meanwhile, the associated key landmarks of this approach are disclosed (see the video). RESULTS: The ureterohypogastric nerve fascia (UHGNF) and the vesicohypogastric fascia (VHGF) are two vital embryological planes on the lateral compartment of pelvis. The spaces on either side of them together with the retrorectal space, the space of Retzius, are all non-vascular spaces, and dissection of these spaces in LTPE surgery can be achieved simply and practicably. The ureter, the umbilical artery, the arcus tendinous fasciae pelvis (ATFP), piriformis and the puboprostatic ligament (PPL) are all important landmarks during surgery. Step-by-step illustration with precise anatomical landmarks in the present video may lead to less intraoperative blood loss and complications. CONCLUSIONS: LTPE with fascial space priority approach might be a standard surgical procedure for total pelvic exenteration with clear anatomy and reduced blood loss.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this article was to introduce a fascial space priority approach for laparoscopic pelvic exenteration (PE) with bladder-sparing for men with locally advanced rectal cancer. METHODS: We present a video of bladder-sparing laparoscopic PE with fascial space priority approach in a 70-year old man. The systematic de-arterialization of the prostate on the basis of complete separation of the avascular lateral pelvic spaces is introduced in detail. RESULTS: The operation time was 360 min and the estimated intraoperative blood loss was 50 mL. The postoperative course was uneventful and the patient was discharged on postoperative day 14. Histopathological examination showed all margins to be tumor-free. CONCLUSIONS: Bladder-sparing laparoscopic PE using a fascial space priority approach is a feasible and safe procedure that can be performed in well-selected patients following neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy. Extensive multivisceral resection is possible without a permanent stoma.

RESUMEN

Defect states dominate the performance of low-dimensional nanoelectronics, which deteriorate the serviceability of devices in most cases. But in recent years, some intriguing functionalities are discovered by defect engineering. In this work, we demonstrate a bifunctional memory device of a MoS2/BiFeO3/SrTiO3 van der Waals heterostructure, which can be programmed and erased by solely one kind of external stimuli (light or electrical-gate pulse) via engineering of oxygen-vacancy-based solid-ionic gating. The device shows multibit electrical memory capability (>22 bits) with a large linearly tunable dynamic range of 7.1 × 106 (137 dB). Furthermore, the device can be programmed by green- and red-light illuminations and then erased by UV light pulses. Besides, the photoresponse under red-light illumination reaches a high photoresponsivity (6.7 × 104 A/W) and photodetectivity (2.12 × 1013 Jones). These results highlighted solid-ionic memory for building up multifunctional electronic and optoelectronic devices.

RESUMEN

Ormosia purpureiflora is endemic to China. It is named after its purple flowers. It is a small tree only up to 3 m. It has leathery leaves, racemose inflorescences. The seeds are elliptic and red in coat. It is only confined to Luofushan Provincial Nature Reserve in Huizhou of Guangdong Province. Herein, we first reported on its complete chloroplast genome sequence as genomic resource for conservation purposes. The chloroplast genome of O. purpureiflora was 173,364 bp in length, with a large single-copy region of 73,465 bp, a small single-copy region of 18,751 bp, and a pair of inverted repeat regions that were 40,574 bp each. A total of 90 protein-coding genes, 38 transfer RNA genes, and eight ribosomal RNA genes were predicted, while 106 simple sequence repeats were recorded throughout the genome. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that O. purpureiflora was sister to O. emarginata.

RESUMEN

Recently, new states of matter like superconducting or topological quantum states were found in transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) and manifested themselves in a series of exotic physical behaviors. Such phenomena have been demonstrated to exist in a series of transition metal tellurides including MoTe2, WTe2, and alloyed MoxW1-xTe2. However, the behaviors in the alloy system have been rarely addressed due to their difficulty in obtaining atomic layers with controlled composition, albeit the alloy offers a great platform to tune the quantum states. Here, we report a facile CVD method to synthesize the MoxW1-xTe2 with controllable thickness and chemical composition ratios. The atomic structure of a monolayer MoxW1-xTe2 alloy was experimentally confirmed by scanning transmission electron microscopy. Importantly, two different transport behaviors including superconducting and Weyl semimetal states were observed in Mo-rich Mo0.8W0.2Te2 and W-rich Mo0.2W0.8Te2 samples, respectively. Our results show that the electrical properties of MoxW1-xTe2 can be tuned by controlling the chemical composition, demonstrating our controllable CVD growth method is an efficient strategy to manipulate the physical properties of TMDCs. Meanwhile, it provides a perspective on further comprehension and sheds light on the design of devices with topological multicomponent TMDC materials.

RESUMEN

FeTe1-xSex, a promising layered material used to realize Majorana zero modes, has attracted enormous attention in recent years. Pulsed laser deposition (PLD) and molecular-beam epitaxy (MBE) are the routine growth methods used to prepare FeTe1-xSex thin films. However, both methods require high-vacuum conditions and polished crystalline substrates, which hinder the exploration of the topological superconductivity and related nanodevices of this material. Here we demonstrate the growth of the ultrathin FeTe1-xSex superconductor by a facile, atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method. The composition and thickness of the two-dimensional (2D) FeTe1-xSex nanosheets are well controlled by tuning the experimental conditions. The as-prepared FeTe0.8Se0.2 nanosheet exhibits an onset superconducting transition temperature of 12.4 K, proving its high quality. Our work offers an effective strategy for preparing the ultrathin FeTe1-xSex superconductor, which could become a promising platform for further study of the unconventional superconductivity in the FeTe1-xSex system.
