RESUMEN

There are numerous differences between adult acne and adolescent acne in terms of causes, distribution, and characteristics of skin lesions, as well as treatment. This paper aims to summarize the differences between adult and adolescent acne in China, in order to propose more suitable ways to improve their quality of life. We collected basic information, acne-related information, acne-affecting factors, quality of life scores and treatment-related information of acne patients. A total of 552 questionnaires were collected. Adult acne is typically predominant on the cheeks, similar to adolescent acne, with a relatively lower incidence in other areas, apart from the jawline. Pigmentation and depressed scars are present in nearly half of acne patients, while hypertrophic scars are less frequently observed. Teenagers often have a higher consumption of dairy products, sugary drinks, and high-sugar and high-fat foods. Eczema is more common in adult acne. Additionally, more adults than teenagers experience stress and poor quality of life related to acne. Adolescents are more likely to seek treatment online and on social media. Clinicians must thoroughly evaluate diverse risk factors and formulate personalized acne management strategies for patients with different types of acne.

Pain in photodynamic therapy (PDT), resulting from the stimulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and local acute inflammation, is a primary side effect of PDT that often leads to treatment interruption or termination, significantly compromising the efficacy of PDT and posing an enduring challenge for clinical practice. Herein, a ROS-responsive nanomicelle, poly(ethylene glycol)-b-poly(propylene sulphide) (PEG-PPS) encapsulated Ce6 and Lidocaine (LC), (ESCL) was used to address these problems. The tumor preferentially accumulated micelles could realize enhanced PDT effect, as well as in situ quickly release LC due to its ROS generation ability after light irradiation, which owes to the ROS-responsive property of PSS. In addition, PSS can suppress inflammatory pain which is one of the mechanisms of PDT induced pain. High LC-loaded efficiency (94.56 %) owing to the presence of the thioether bond of the PPS made an additional pain relief by inhibiting excessive inflammation besides blocking voltage-gated sodium channels (VGSC). Moreover, the anti-angiogenic effect of LC offers further therapeutic effects of PDT. The in vitro and in vivo anti-tumor results revealed significant PDT efficacy. The signals of the sciatic nerve in mice were measured by electrophysiological study to evaluate the pain relief, results showed that the relative integral area of neural signals in ESCL-treated mice decreased by 49.90 % compared to the micelles without loaded LC. Therefore, our study not only develops a very simple but effective tumor treatment PDT and in situ pain relief strategy during PDT, but also provides a quantitative pain evaluation method.

BACKGROUND: Skin rejuvenation has always been of great concern. Although salicylic acid (SA) has multiple properties, it is mainly used in dermatology as a superficial peeling agent that can improve photodamaged epidermis. However, the effect of SA on the photoaging dermis is unclear. PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of supramolecular SA alone for treating photoaged skin, and the effect of SSA on photoaged dermis. METHODS: This is a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial. 36 patients with photodamaged hands were enrolled. One hand was randomly selected as SSA treated side. 30% SSA biweekly and 2% SSA daily was applied for 4 months; an additional follow-up was performed 2 weeks after the last treatment. Skin photoaging score (SPS), global aesthetic improvement scale (GAIS), viscoelasticity, ultrasound parameters, color and transepidermal water loss (TEWL) were assessed. RESULTS: SSA treatment induced a significant increase in collagen density and skin elasticity, accompanied by an increase in dermal thickness and a decrease in melanin index and TEWL. As result, the GAIS and the SPS were improved significantly after SSA treatment. No adverse events were observed after SSA treatments, and 98% of the subjects were satisfied or very satisfied with the treatment. CONCLUSION: SSA can increase collagen density and skin elasticity to alleviate skin photoaging effectively and safely. OBJECTIVE: Salicylic acid (SA) has been used for treatment of acne of different severity levels. However, there are few researches about the safety and efficacy for treatment of mild to moderate acne, and the improvement of the skin condition by using 2% supramolecular salicylic acid (SSA) compared to Davuwen Adapaline gel. METHODS: A multicenter, randomized, assessor-blind and parallel-controlled study was conducted. A total of 500 patients (trial group: 249, control group: 251) with mild to moderate (grade I-II) facial acne vulgaris were recruited in this study over a 16-week trial period. Patients in the trial group were treated with Broda 2% SSA hydrogel, while control group treated with Davuwen Adapaline gel once a day. The number of inflammatory papules, comedones, and pustules were counted and the rate of lesion reduction was calculated pre- and post-treatment. Then, the skin physiological indicators, including L*a*b*, TEWL, skin sebum and hydration were measured. Statistical analysis was conducted using SAS 9.4. Significance was set at p = 0.05. RESULTS: At the end of 12 weeks' therapy, the regression and markedly improvement rate of the trail group and the control group were 51.01% and 43.10% respectively, and there was no significant difference in the improvement rate between two groups (p = 0.0831). Although, there was no difference in adverse events rate between two groups, the adverse events rate of the trail group was 0.40%, a little lower than the control group (0.80%). Moreover, there was a significant difference in the numbers of pores at T1 between two groups. CONCLUSION: Both 2% SSA and Adapaline gel were equally effective in the treatment of mild to moderate acne vulgaris. 2% SSA is worth the clinical promotion and application in mild to moderate acne vulgaris.

Psoriasis is a chronic, immune-mediated inflammatory skin disease characterized by epidermal thickening and inflammatory cell infiltration. Excessive proliferation of keratinocytes and resistance to apoptosis lead to thickening of the epidermis. Plasmacytoid dendritic cells are involved in the occurrence of psoriasis mainly by secreting interferon-alpha (IFN-α). IFN-α is a glycoprotein with antiviral, antitumor, and immunomodulatory effects, but its role in psoriasis remains unclear. In this investigation, a mild psoriatic phenotype was observed in mice upon topical application of IFN-α cream, and the inflammation was exacerbated when combined with imiquimod (IMQ). Immunohistochemical analyses demonstrated that IFN-α induces psoriatic inflammation in mice by stimulating phosphorylation of forkhead box O3, consistent with the involvement of this protein in cell proliferation, apoptosis, and inflammation. Our results suggested that topical IFN-α caused psoriatic inflammation and that the psoriatic inflammation was exacerbated by the combination of IFN-α and IMQ, possibly due to the dysfunction of forkhead box O3.

BACKGROUND: No trial of supramolecular salicylic acid (SSA) for chloasma is available yet. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess the efficacy and safety of Bole DA 30% supramolecular salicylic acid (SSA) combined with 10% niacinamide in treating chloasma. METHODS: This multicenter (n=15), randomized, double-blind, parallel placebo-controlled trial randomized the subjects (1:1) to Bole DA 30% SSA or placebo. The primary endpoint was the effective rate after 16 weeks using the modified melasma area severity index (mMASI) [(pretreatment-posttreatment)/pretreatment×100%]. RESULTS: This study randomized 300 subjects (150/group in the full analysis set, 144 and 147 in the per-protocol set). The total mMASI score, overall Griffiths 10 score, left Griffiths 10 score, and right Griffiths 10 score were significantly lower in the Bole DA 30% SSA group than in the placebo group (all P<0.001). One study drug-related AE and one study drug-unrelated adverse events (AE) were reported in the Bole DA 30% SSA group. No AE was reported in the placebo group. CONCLUSION: Bole DA 30% SSA combined with 10% niacinamide is effective and safe for treating chloasma. CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: ChiCTR2200065346.

RESUMEN

Two cases of acquired port-wine stain (APWS) at lower extremity were treated with hematoporphyrin monomethyl ether (HMME) and 532 nm LED green light-mediated photodynamic therapy (HMME-PDT). No serious adverse reactions were observed during or post-treatment period. Five-month follow-up showed significant reduction of red patches after a single HMME-PDT treatment in both cases.

OBJECTIVES: Public's interest in noninvasive skin rejuvenation treatments continues to grow. The advantage of combination therapy lies in that it can target different aspects of skin rejuvenation. This study aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of microfocused ultrasound (MFU) combined with delicate pulsed light (DPL) for facial rejuvenation. METHODS: Twenty-one patients with facial relaxation were enrolled. All patients received whole-face MFU treatment, and one side of the face was randomly assigned to receive DPL. MFU treatment was performed at Months 0 and 3, while DPL treatment was performed at Months 1, 2, 4, and 5. The length and angle of the nasolabial fold and perioral wrinkles, melanin index (MI), erythema index (EI), transepidermal water loss (TEWL), and follow-up time were recorded at Months 0, 3, and 6. Side effects were recorded during treatment and each follow-up visit. RESULTS: Twenty patients successfully completed the study. At the sixth month, the average length of perioral wrinkles and nasolabial folds on the combined side decreased by 11.5% (pwithin < 0.001) and 6.5% (pwithin = 0.011), while 8.3% (pwithin = 0.012) and 3.8% (pwithin = 0.02) on the MFU side. Compared with MFU treatment alone, the combined treatment also showed significant improvements in nasolabial fold angle (from 28.8 ± 3.4° to 32.7 ± 5.0°) and perioral wrinkle angle (from 39.3 ± 5.0° to 43.7 ± 5.1°). In addition, the combined side had greater benefits than the MFU side in improving MI, EI, TEWL, and skin elasticity (pbetween < 0.05). Except for one patient who withdrew due to increased skin sensitivity after MFU treatment, other subjects did not experience permanent or serious side effects. CONCLUSIONS: The combination of MFU and DPL for facial rejuvenation treatment is safe and effective. The combined treatment has better efficacy in skin firmness, and improving skin tone.

Clinically, rosacea occurs frequently in acne patients, which hints the existence of shared signals. However, the connection between the pathophysiology of rosacea and acne are not yet fully understood. This study aims to unveil molecular mechanism in the pathogenesis of rosacea and acne. We identified differentially expressed genes (DEGs) by limma and weighted gene co-expression network analysis and screened hub genes by constructing a protein-protein interaction network. The hub genes were verified in different datasets. Then, we performed a correlation analysis between the hub genes and the pathways. Finally, we predicted and verified transcription factors of hub genes, performed the immune cell infiltration analysis using CIBERSORT, and calculated the correlation between hub genes and immune cells. A total of 169 common DEGs were identified, which were mainly enriched in immune-related pathways. Finally, hub genes were identified as IL1B, PTPRC, CXCL8, MMP9, CCL4, CXCL10, CD163, CCR5, CXCR4, and TLR8. 9 transcription factors that regulated the expression of hub genes were identified. The infiltration of γδT cells was significantly increased in rosacea and acne lesions and positively linked with almost all hub genes. These identified hub genes and immune cells may play a crucial role in the development of rosacea and acne.

BACKGROUND: TET2 participates in tumor progression and intrinsic immune homeostasis via epigenetic regulation. TET2 has been reported to be involved in maintaining epithelial barrier homeostasis and inflammation. Abnormal epidermal barrier function and TET2 expression have been detected in psoriatic lesions. However, the mechanisms underlying the role of TET2 in psoriasis have not yet been elucidated. OBJECTIVE: To define the role of TET2 in maintaining epithelial barrier homeostasis and the exact epigenetic mechanism in the dysfunction of the epidermal barrier in psoriasis. METHODS: We analyzed human psoriatic skin lesions and datasets from the GEO database, and detected the expression of TET2/5-hmC together with barrier molecules by immunohistochemistry. We constructed epidermal-specific TET2 knockout mice to observe the effect of TET2 deficiency on epidermal barrier function via toluidine blue penetration assay. Further, we analyzed changes in the expression of epidermal barrier molecules by immunofluorescence in TET2-specific knockout mice and psoriatic model mice. RESULTS: We found that decreased expression of TET2/5-hmC correlated with dysregulated barrier molecules in human psoriatic lesions. Epidermal-specific TET2 knockout mice showed elevated transdermal water loss associated with abnormal epidermal barrier molecules. Furthermore, we observed that TET2 knockdown in keratinocytes reduced filaggrin expression via filaggrin promoter methylation. CONCLUSION: Aberrant epidermal TET2 affects the integrity of the epidermal barrier through the epigenetic dysregulation of epidermal barrier molecules, particularly filaggrin. Reduced TET2 expression is a critical factor contributing to an abnormal epidermal barrier in psoriasis.

SIGNIFICANCE: Angiokeratoma corporis diffusum (ACD) is one type of angiokeratomas which are characterized on histology by superficial dilated capillaries with epidermal proliferation. ACD seriously influences patients' appearance and quality of life. Many therapies have been used to solved this problem. However, all the treatments have not been proved very effective. Hemoporfin-mediated photodynamic therapy (Hemoporfin-PDT) was considered recently as a promising treatment for PWS according to the principle of targeted photodynamic destruction of the vascular wall of the lesion. APPROACH: APPROACH: A 27-year-old male patient diagnosed with angiokeratoma corporis diffusum (ACD) by skin tissue biopsy has undergone pulsed dye laser for times, but the result was unsatisfying. After evaluating and obtaining the patient's agreement, we utilized Hemoporfin-PDT with 530 nm LED green light to treat ACD. When followed up in the 1 year after 2 treatments, the patient was pleased with the efficacy that most red papules on his face disappeared. RESULTS: The patient achieved great improvement after two treatments. CONCLUSIONS: Hemoporfin-PDT could be used to treat ACD.

Accumulation studies have found that adipose-derived stem cell (ADSC) exosomes have anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory characteristics. The current study verified their therapeutic potential to elucidate mechanisms of ADSC exosome actions in ultraviolet B (UVB) light-induced skin injury. Exosomes were isolated from ADSCs and hypoxic pretreated ADSCs. Next-generation sequencing (NGS) was applied to characterize differential mRNA expression. A UV-induced mice skin injury model was generated to investigate therapeutic effects regarding the exosomes via immunofluorescence and ELISA analysis. Regulatory mechanisms were illustrated using luciferase report analysis and in vitro experiments. The results demonstrated that exosomes from hypoxic pretreated ADSCs (HExos) inhibited UVB light-induced vascular injury by reversing reactive oxygen species, inflammatory factor expression and excessive collagen degradation. NGS showed that HExos inhibits UV-induced skin damage via GLRX5 delivery, while GLRX5 downregulation inhibited the therapeutic effect of HExos on UV-induced skin damage. GLRX5 upregulation increased the protective Exo effect on UV-induced skin and EPC damage by inhibiting ferroptosis, inflammatory cytokine expression and excessive collagen degradation. Therefore, the data indicate that HExos attenuate UV light-induced skin injury via GLRX5 delivery and ferroptosis inhibition.

OBJECTIVES: Dense comedones are common in patients with acne vulgaris, and promoting treatment can prevent the progression of acne lesions. However, the efficacy-time conflict makes the treatment challenging and the medication options are limited by the side effects. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-five patients with symmetrical dense comedones were enrolled and the two sides of the face were randomly assigned to receive 30% supramolecular salicylic acid (SSA) combined with CO2 laser or CO2 laser monotherapy at an interval of 2 weeks for six treatment sessions. Comedones count, porphyrin index (PI), texture index (TI), melanin index, erythema index, hydration index (HI), transepidermal water loss (TEWL), and side effects were recorded at each visit till the 12th week. RESULTS: Thirty-one patients completed the study. Comedones on the combined-SSA side were reduced more after six treatments, that the mean reduction rate of the combined-SSA side was 85.76%, and that of the CO2 laser-treated side was 62.32% (Pbetween < 0.001). Combining SSA also showed a better effect on reducing PI and TI than CO2 laser singly (Pbetween < 0.001). TEWL and HI between the two sides showed no significant differences after treatments. No permanent or severe side effects were observed on both side. CONCLUSIONS: The treatment combined CO2 laser with 30% SSA dealt with the efficacy-time conflict while significantly reducing comedones and improving skin texture in 12 weeks and no serious adverse reactions occurred. LIMITATIONS: It is a single-center study and the number of subjects was small.

Mast cell (MC) activation is implicated in the pathogenesis of multiple immunodysregulatory skin disorders. Activation of an IgE-independent pseudo-allergic route has been recently found to be mainly mediated via Mas-Related G protein-coupled receptor X2 (MRGPRX2). Ryanodine receptor (RYR) regulates intracellular calcium liberation. Calcium mobilization is critical in the regulation of MC functional programs. However, the role of RYR in MRGPRX2-mediated pseudo-allergic skin reaction has not been fully addressed. To study the role of RYR in vivo, we established a murine skin pseudo-allergic reaction model. RYR inhibitor attenuated MRGPRX2 ligand substance P (SP)-induced vascular permeability and neutrophil recruitment. Then, we confirmed the role of RYR in an MC line (LAD2 cells) and primary human skin-derived MCs. In LAD2 cells, RYR inhibitor pretreatment dampened MC degranulation (detected by ß-hexosaminidase retlease), calcium mobilization, IL-13, TNF-α, CCL-1, CCL-2 mRNA, and protein expression activated by MRGPRX2 ligands, namely, compound 48/80 (c48/80) and SP. Moreover, the inhibition effect of c48/80 by RYR inhibitor was verified in skin MCs. After the confirmation of RYR2 and RYR3 expression, the isoforms were silenced by siRNA-mediated knockdown. MRGPRX2-induced LAD2 cell exocytosis and cytokine generation were substantially inhibited by RYR3 knockdown, while RYR2 had less contribution. Collectively, our finding suggests that RYR activation contributes to MRGPRX2-triggered pseudo-allergic dermatitis, and provides a potential approach for MRGPRX2-mediated disorders.

OBJECTIVES: Patients with acne usually develops acne scars subsequently, early intervention of scars is crucial in acne management. 1927nm fractional thulium fiber laser (TFL) is effective in scars improvement and chemical peels with 30% supramolecular salicylic acid (SSA) can be applied for the treatment of acne. The purpose of this study is to evaluate and compare the efficacy and safety of TFL monotherapy versus the concomitant application of TFL and 30% SSA on acne and acne scars. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-three patients with acne and acne scars were enrolled, and two sides of the face were randomly divided to receive either TFL and SSA chemical peeling or TFL. Four sessions of TFL treatments were applied with 4-week intervals for both sides, SSA combined treatment side received eight SSA chemical peels with 2-week intervals additionally. GAGS, ECCA score, the number of acne lesions, melanin index (MI) and erythema index (EI), transepidermal water loss (TEWL), and side effects were recorded at Weeks 0, 4, 8, 12, and 18. Satisfaction of patients was recorded on both sides at the end of the study. RESULTS: Thirty patients completed the study. Both control group (TFL monotherapy) and SSA group (TFL combined with SSA chemical peeling) significantly improved GAGS and ECCA score. SSA group showed higher efficacy in terms of GAGS and ECCA score, acne lesion count, TEWL, MI, EI, and satisfaction than control group. All the side effects were temporary and tolerable, no adverse effects were observed. CONCLUSIONS: Both TFL and the TFL combined with 30% SSA chemical peeling are safe and effective for the treatment and prevention of acne and acne scars, though the combined group has higher efficacy.

BACKGROUND: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) with 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) is a reliable treatment for actinic keratosis (AK), but its effect needs to be enhanced in thick lesions. Plum-blossom needle is a traditional Chinese cost-effective instrument for enhancing the transdermal delivery of ALA. However, whether it could improve the efficacy of AK treatment has not yet been investigated. OBJECTIVE: To compare the efficacy and safety of plum-blossom needle-assisted PDT in facial AK in the Chinese population. METHODS: In this multicenter, prospective study, a total of 142 patients with AKs (grades I-III) were randomized into the plum-blossom needle-assisted PDT group (P-PDT) and control PDT group (C-PDT). In the P-PDT group, each AK lesion was tapped vertically by a plum-blossom needle before the application of 10% ALA cream. In the C-PDT group, each lesion was only wiped with regular saline before ALA cream incubation. Then, 3 hours later, all the lesions were irradiated with light-emitting diode (LED) at a wavelength of 630 nm. PDT was performed once every 2 weeks until all lesion patients achieved complete remission or completed six sessions. The efficacy (lesion response) and safety (pain scale and adverse events) in both groups were evaluated before each treatment and at every follow-up visit at 3-month intervals until 12 months. RESULTS: In the P-PDT and C-PDT groups, the clearance rates for all AK lesions after the first treatment were 57.9% and 48.0%, respectively (P < 0.05). For grade I AK lesions, the clearance rates were 56.5% and 50.4%, respectively (P = 0.34). For grade II AK lesions, the clearance rates were 58.0% and 48.9%, respectively (P = 0.1). For grade III AK lesions, the clearance rates were 59.0% and 44.2%, respectively (P < 0.05). Moreover, grade III AK lesions in the P-PDT group required fewer treatment sessions (P < 0.05). There was no significant difference in the pain score between the two groups (P = 0.752). CONCLUSION: Plum-blossom needle tapping may enhance the efficacy of ALA-PDT by facilitating ALA delivery in the treatment of AK.

PURPOSE: Acne scars are common in patients with moderate to severe acne. Isotretinoin is the first-line treatment for those patients, but whether oral isotretinoin can improve acne scar is not clear. Picosecond lasers (FxPico) has been reported to improve acne scars. In the present study, we evaluated the clinical efficacy of low-dose isotretinoin with or without FxPico treatment for acne scars. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 48 patients with acne scars were enrolled and were randomly assigned to receive low dose oral isotretinoin or not. For all the patients in both treatment groups, one side of face were randomly assigned to be treated with picosecond laser. Assessments, including photos, échelle d'évaluation clinique des cicatrices d'acné (ECCA) and Global Acne Grading System (GAGS) score, the number of lesions, melanin and erythema indexes, transepidermal water loss were assessed at 0, 1, 2, and 3 month. Side effects, Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) and satisfaction were recorded before and after the study. RESULTS: A total of 44 patients completed the study (24 received oral low dose isotretinoin and 20 did not). Low dose oral isotretinoin treated group showed significant improvement on ECCA (from 112.5 [50-180] to 105 [50-160]), GAGS score (from 12.6 ± 3.3 to 10.1 ± 3.0), the count of papules (from 4.3 ± 3.7 to 1.0 ± 1.5) than the blank group, and higher improvement were noticed after isotretinoin combined with FxPico. All the side effects were temporary and tolerable, no adverse effects were observed. Higher DLQI and patients' satisfaction were achieved by oral isotretinoin alone and isotretinoin combined with FxPico. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first paper showing the improvement of scars by early low dose-isotretinoin intervention with or without the combination of picosecond laser. Early intervention with oral low-dose isotretinoin is effective for the treatment and prevention of acne scars, the combined therapy with FxPico can achieve better outcome.

BACKGROUND: Hemoporfin-mediated photodynamic therapy (Hemoporfin-PDT) has been approved for port-wine stain (PWS) in China in 2017. This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of Hemoporfin-PDT for PWS in a real life setting and investigated factors that influence the efficacy. METHODS: A multicenter retrospective study included patients with PWS who underwent Hemoporfin-PDT in 29 hospitals across China and completed at least two months of follow-up. The efficacy was evaluated based on patien photographs. RESULTS: A total of 1679 patients were included. After the first and second sessions of Hemoporfin-PDT, 63.5 and 75.3% of patients responded, respectively. The response rate of purple-type PWS was significantly lower than that of pink-type PWS (OR: 0.71, 95% CI: 0.54-0.94, P < 0.05), and there was no significant difference between thick- and pink-type (OR: 0.72, 95% CI: 0.42-1.22, P > 0.05). The response rate of PWS on the limbs was significantly lower than that on the mid-face (OR: 0.35, 95% CI: 0.23-0.53, P < 0.0001), while no significant difference was observed between PWS on the peripheral part of the face, neck or other parts of the body and PWS on the mid-face (P > 0.05). The response rate was lower in male patients with an age > 3 years or ≤ 6 years (P < 0.05). Previous treatment history did not affect the efficacy (P > 0.05). Hemoporfin-PDT was well tolerated. CONCLUSION: Patients with PWS have a good response and good tolerance to Hemoporfin-PDT.

To identify factors influencing the efficacy of Q-switched laser in the treatment of naevus of Ota in children and to compare the efficacy, safety, and recurrence rate between 1064 nm Q-switched Nd:YAG laser (QSNL) and 755 nm Q-switched alexandrite laser (QSAL). We retrospectively analysed 160 children with naevus of Ota who completed QSAL or QSNL laser treatment at our centre. Age at initial treatment (P = 0.004), colour of lesions (P = 0.025), and number of treatments (P = 0.002) were related to efficacy. Compared with patients aged 0-11 months at initial treatment, patients who started treatment at 1-3 years (OR adj = 0.47), 4-8 years (OR adj = 0.20), and 9-12 years (OR adj = 0.27) had inferior efficacy. The efficacy of brown-violet (OR adj = 2.67) and blue-violet lesions (OR adj = 2.51) was better than that of brown lesions. Moreover, patients who received 3-4 (OR adj = 2.83) or 5-6 (OR adj = 7.35) treatment sessions showed a better response than those who received 1-2 sessions. Additionally, as the age at initial treatment increased, the rate of complications increased from 2.0 to 14.3%, while the recurrence rate decreased from 8.2 to 0%. In addition, the complication rate increased with an increase in the number of treatments. There were no significant differences in clinical efficacy (P = 0.94), risk of complications (P = 0.752), or recurrence (P = 0.834) between QSAL and QSNL for treating naevus of Ota in children. QSAL and QSNL are equally effective for children's naevus of Ota, with low complications and recurrence rates. Younger age at initial treatment and a greater number of treatments are beneficial for efficacy, whereas brown lesions are a negative factor.
