RESUMEN

PURPOSE: This study aimed to conduct a comprehensive molecular epidemiology study of major HIV-1 subtypes in developed Eastern China (Zhejiang Province). METHODS: Plasma samples and epidemiological information were collected from 4180 newly diagnosed HIV-1 positive patients in Zhejiang Province in 2021. Pol sequences were obtained to determine the subtypes via multiple analytical tools. HIV-1 molecular networks were constructed on the basis of genetic distances to analyze transmission patterns among major subtypes. Furthermore, the birth-death skyline (BDSKY) model was utilized to estimate the transmission risks associated with large clusters (LCs). RESULTS: In 4180 patients, 3699 (88.49%) pol sequences were successfully obtained and classified into four subtype groups. In the networks under an optimal genetic distance of 0.01 substitutions/site, the majority of links (74.52%, 1383/1856) involved individuals within the same city, highlighting the predominant role of local transmission in driving the HIV-1 epidemic. In the CRF07_BC, CRF01_AE, and others/URFs networks, men who have sex with men (MSM) were the primary sexual transmission population, with the younger MSM group (< 30 years old) exhibiting higher linkage frequencies. Within the CRF08_BC network, 93.98% of individuals were infected primarily through heterosexual contact and had a significantly greater risk of localized clustering than other subtypes did. Moreover, fifteen identified LCs were predominantly transmitted through commercial heterosexual contact (CHC), exhibiting localized clustering and high potential for sustained diffusion. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, our findings reveal a diverse and heterogeneous distribution of HIV-1 subtypes in Zhejiang Province, with noticeable variations in hotspots across different geographic areas and populations.

RESUMEN

Layered silicon (L-Si) anodes are celebrated for their high theoretical capacity but face significant challenges regarding safety and material purity during preparation. This study addresses these challenges by employing NH4Cl-CaSi2 as the raw material in a gas-solid de-alloying process, which enhances both safety and purity compared to traditional methods. The L-Si anodes produced demonstrate outstanding electrochemical performance, delivering a high reversible lithium storage capacity of 1497.7 mA h g-1 at a current density of 0.5 A g-1, and exhibiting stable performance over 1200 charge-discharge cycles. In situ and ex situ characterizations reveal that electrolyte decomposition products effectively fill the voids within the electrode, while the gradual disintegration of the L-Si structure contributes to the formation of a dense, conductive network. This process enhances lithium ion transport and exploits the capacitive storage benefits of layered silicon.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The number and proportion of HIV/AIDS patients among older people are continuously and rapidly increasing in China. We conducted a detailed molecular epidemiological analysis of HIV-1 epidemic strains in a developed city in eastern China and found that elderly people play a crucial role in the transmission of subtypes and high pretreatment drug resistance (PDR). METHODS: A total of 1048 samples were obtained from 1129 (92.8%) newly confirmed HIV-1-positive and treatment-naive patients between 2019 and 2023. The 1316 bp target fragment of the pol gene was amplified by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT‒PCR) and nested PCR, and Maximum-likelihood (ML) phylogenetic trees and molecular transmission network were constructed to analyse the subtypes and transmission clusters. Molecular transmission network was visualized using Cytoscape with the distance threshold of 0.0075. PDR-associated mutations were determined according to the Stanford University HIV Drug Resistance Database. RESULTS: A total of 933 pol sequences (89.0%, 933/1048) were successfully obtained, and twelve HIV-1 subtypes were detected. CRF07_BC was the predominant subtype, accounting for 48.1% (449/933) of sequences, followed by CRF01_AE (29.4%, 274/933). A total of 398 individuals (42.7%, 398/933) formed 89 clusters in the network. Multivariable logistic regression analysis revealed that age, nationality, subtype, and PDR were the most significant factors associated with clustering in the transmission network. The prevalence of PDR was 14.6% (136/933).PDR associated with non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (10.0%, 93/933) was much more common than that associated with nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (1.8%, 17/933) and protease inhibitors (3.2%, 30/933) (χ2 = 77.961, p < 0.001). The most frequent NNRTI mutations were K103N/S/KN/NS (52.2%, 71/136), which led to the highest proportion of high-level resistance to nevirapine and efavirenz (52.2%). CONCLUSIONS: Our study revealed the important influence of elderly people on CRF07_BC transmission and the high prevalence of PDR. The clustering of drug-resistant cases was significant, which suggested the potential for localized widespread transmission of drug-resistant strains. HIV screening and the determination of PDR are recommended for older patients to improve early detection and reduce treatment failure and second-generation transmission.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Teriparatide is widely used for osteoporosis treatment in various patients, but its safety profile is not fully documented. This study analyzes the FDA pharmacovigilance database to assess teriparatide's safety. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Data from the first quarter (Q1) of 2004 to the third quarter (Q3) of 2023 were extracted and analyzed for disproportionality between teriparatide and adverse effects (AE). RESULTS: A total of 66,991 AE reports identified teriparatide as the principal suspect medication, aggregating to 222,116 individual AEs. Notably, healthcare professionals authored 16.1% of these reports (n = 10,809), whereas consumers accounted for the majority with 81.3% (n = 54,474). Teriparatide revealed a marked association with an increased propensity for musculoskeletal and connective tissue disorders (ROR,3.95; 95% CI, 3.91-3.99) at the System Organ Class (SOC) level. Concurrently, 199 preferred terms (PTs) displayed significant disproportionality across all four employed algorithms. CONCLUSIONS: Our study confirms several well-known adverse drug reactions and identifies potential safety issues associated with teriparatide treatment. This contributes to a deeper understanding of the complex relationship between adverse reactions and teriparatide. These findings emphasize the importance of continuous monitoring and ongoing surveillance to promptly identify and effectively manage adverse reactions, thereby enhancing overall patient safety and well-being.

RESUMEN

HIV drug resistance compromises the ability of anti-retroviral therapy (ART) to suppress viral replication, resulting in treatment failure. This study investigates the prevalence of pre-treatment drug resistance (PDR) in newly diagnosed individuals in a prosperous city (Wenzhou) in Southeastern China. A cross-sectional investigation was carried out among 473 newly diagnosed ART-naive HIV-1-infected individuals between January and December 2022. The protease-reverse transcriptase (PR-RT) region and integrase (IN) region of HIV-1 were amplified by two separately nested PCRs, followed by sequencing. Drug resistance mutations (DRMs) and drug resistance to nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs), non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIs), protease inhibitors (PIs) and integrase strand transfer inhibitors (INSTIs) were analyzed. The PDR prevalence was 6.5% [95% CI: 4.4-9.1] for any anti-retroviral drug, 0.9% [95% CI: 0.3-2.3] for NRTIs, 4.1% [95% CI: 2.5-6.5] for NNRTIs, 1.8% [95% CI: 0.8-3.6] for PIs and 0.5% [95% CI: 0.1-1.8] for INSTIs. According to the subtyping results of the PR-RT region, 11 different subtypes and 31 unique recombinant forms (URFs) were found. CRF07_BC was the dominant subtype (53.7%, 233/434), followed by CRF01_AE (25.3%, 110/434). V179D (1.6%) and K103N (1.4%) were the most predominant types of NNRTI DRMs. Q58E (1.2%) and M184V (0.7%) were the most frequent PI DRMs and NRTI DRMs, respectively. The INSTI-related DRMs Y143S (causes high-level resistance to RAL) and G163K (causes low-level resistance to EVG and RAL) were found in one patient each. Given the relatively high PDR prevalence of NNRTI (4.1%), non-NNRTI-based ART may be preferred in the future. It is recommended to include genotypic resistance testing before starting ART in regions where feasible.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The current prevalence of Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) infection is notably high, with individuals afflicted by HSV-2 facing recurrent outbreaks, challenges in achieving remission, and an elevated risk of HIV infection. This study aims to investigate the relationship between alcohol consumption and HSV-2 infection. METHODS: The data for this study were sourced from 7257 participants who took part in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2009 to 2016. The target population consisted of adults with reliable HSV-2 plasma results, and alcohol consumption was assessed using self-report methods. We evaluated the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for the association between alcohol consumption and HSV-2 infection. These estimations were derived from a logistic regression model that was adjusted for key confounding factors. Subgroup analysis specifically focused on alcohol consumption, and the interaction between HSV-2 infection, alcohol consumption, and other variables was assessed through stratified analysis. RESULTS: Among the 7,257 participants included, 89.8% (6,518/7,257) reported varying levels of alcohol consumption history. Compared to individuals who never drinkers, the adjusted odds ratios (ORs) for former drinkers, light drinkers, moderate drinkers, and heavy drinkers were 1.79 (95% CI: 1.34-2.4, p < 0.001), 1.38 (95% CI: 1.07-1.77, p = 0.012), 1.49 (95% CI: 1.15-1.94, p = 0.003), and 1.47 (95% CI: 1.14-1.9, p = 0.003), respectively. The results remained stable in subgroup analyses and sensitivity analyses. CONCLUSION: Current research indicates that individuals with a history of alcohol consumption exhibit a higher risk of HSV-2 infection compared to those who have never drinkers.

RESUMEN

Background: Eteplirsen (Exondys 51) is an orphan drug approved for the treatment of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), having received accelerated approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2016. The primary aim of this study is to closely monitor adverse events (AEs) associated with eteplirsen and to identify emerging signals to better characterize their safety profile. Methods: AEs due to eteplirsen usage reported from the third quarter (Q3) of 2016 to the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2023 were collected from the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS). The role_code of AEs mainly includes primary suspect (PS), secondary suspect (SS), concomitant (C), and interaction (I). This study targeted reports with a role_cod of 'PS.' According to the FDA deduplication rule, the latest FDA_DT is selected when the CASEID is the same, and the higher PRIMARYID is selected when the CASEID and FDA_DT are the same. Disproportionality analyses, encompassing four algorithms for reporting odds ratio (ROR), proportional reporting ratio (PRR), Bayesian configuration promotion neural network (BCPNN), and multi-item gamma Poisson shrinker (MGPS), were utilized to quantify the signals of AEs associated with eteplirsen. Results: From the FAERS database, a total of 13,205,369 reports were amassed throughout the study duration. Following the eradication of duplicates, the number of reports with eteplirsen designated as the PS amounted to 1480 encompassed 25 organ systems. Among these, "general disorders and administration site conditions," "injury, poisoning, and procedural complications," "respiratory, thoracic, and mediastinal disorders," "infections and infestations," "vascular disorders," and "product issues" met at least one of the four computational criteria. Additionally, 55 Preferred Terms (PTs) aligned with the prescribed algorithms. The median time to AEs in these patients was 903 days with an interquartile range (IQR) of 269-1575 days. Moreover, 70.04 % of AEs manifested one year or more after the initiation of treatment. Conclusion: As an orphan drug granted accelerated approval, our study has confirmed well-known adverse drug reactions and identified potential safety issues associated with eteplirsen treatment. This has contributed to a deeper understanding of the complex interrelations between adverse reactions and the use of eteplirsen. The findings underscore the critical importance of ongoing monitoring and sustained observation to promptly detect and effectively manage AEs, thereby enhancing the overall safety and well-being of patients treated with eteplirsen for DMD.

RESUMEN

Advancing the high-voltage stability of the O3-type layered cathodes for sodium-ion batteries is critical to boost their progress in energy storage applications. However, this type of cathode often suffers from intricate phase transition and structural degradation at high voltages (i.e., >4.0 V vs Na+/Na), resulting in rapid capacity decay. Here, we present a Li/Ti cosubstitution strategy to modify the electronic configuration of oxygen elements in the O3-type layered oxide cathode. This deliberate modulation simultaneously mitigates the phase transitions and counteracts the weakening of the shielding effect resulting from the extraction of sodium ions, thus enhancing the electrostatic bonding within the TM layer and inducing and optimizing the O3-OP2 phase transition occurring in the voltage range of 2.0-4.3 V. Consequently, the cosubstituted NaLi1/9Ni1/3Mn4/9Ti1/9O2 exhibits an astounding capacity of 161.2 mAh g-1 in the voltage range of 2.0-4.3 V at 1C, and stable cycling up to 100 cycles has been achieved. This work shows the impact mechanism of element substitution on interlayer forces and phase transitions, providing a crucial reference for the optimization of O3-type materials.

RESUMEN

In order to explore the evolution law and driving mechanism of aerobic denitrification bacteria in Baiyangdian Lake under different hydrological scenarios, based on water quality survey and high-throughput sequencing technology, this study conducted a water quality factor analysis and aerobic denitrification bacteria α-diversity analysis, species composition, and network analysis. The results showed that the water body of Baiyangdian Lake was weakly alkaline, with the highest T and the lowest DO in the rainy season and the lowest T and the highest DO in the freezing season. There were significant differences between NH4+-N, NO2--N, NO3--N, TN, permanganate index, Fe, and Mn in Baiyangdian water under different hydrological scenarios (P < 0.01), and there was no significant difference in TP under different hydrological scenarios (P > 0.05). The largest category in water bodies under different hydrological scenarios was Proteobacteria, and the genera with a higher relative abundance were Magnetospirillum, Aeromonas, Pseudomonas, Azospirillum, and Bradyrhizobium. In addition, within the aerobic denitrifying bacteria community, there were significant differences in α-diversity (P < 0.001), with the highest abundance of microbial communities occurring during the freezing period, and the highest diversity and evenness of microbial communities during the dry and freezing periods. According to the RDA and Mantel analyses, the water quality driving factors of flora were different under different hydrological scenarios. The water quality driving factors of flora in the dry season were pH, NO3--N, NO2--N, and permanganate index; the driving factors of flora in the rainy season were pH, T, DO, NO2--N, and TP; the driving factors of flora in the normal season were NO2--N, Fe, and permanganate index; and the driving factors of flora in the freezing season were NO3--N and NONO2--N. Network analysis showed that there were temporal differences in species related to water quality driving factors. The genera related to water quality driving factors during the dry season were Magnetospirillum, Aeromonas, and Azoarcus, whereas the genera related to the rainy season were Magnetospirillum, Pseudomonas, and Aeromonas. The genera related to the normal season were Magnetospirillum, Pseudomonas, and Limnohabitans, and the genera related to the freezing period were Magnetospirillum, Azoarcus, and Pseudomonas. The relationship between key water quality factors (mainly T, DO, NO3--N, and permanganate index) and aerobic denitrification flora in different hydrological scenarios was gradually changing with time. In conclusion, the study on the evolution characteristics of aerobic denitrification bacteria in Baiyangdian Lake under different hydrological scenarios and the driving mechanism of environmental factors could provide a basis for understanding the evolution mechanism of aerobic denitrification bacteria in the natural environment.

RESUMEN

As lithium metal resource supply and demand stabilize and prices decrease, the efficient recovery of valuable metals other than lithium from spent lithium-ion batteries is receiving increasing attention. Currently, challenges remain in the selective lithium recovery efficiency and the high cost of regenerating valuable metal slag after lithium extraction, particularly for spent ternary cathode materials. To address these challenges, this study introduces a closed-loop recovery process for spent ternary cathode materials, employing sulfur-assisted roasting to achieve efficient lithium extraction and high-value direct regeneration of ternary leaching residues. At moderate temperatures (500 â„ƒ), LiNixCoyMn1-x-yO2 (NCM) materials undergo a directional transformation of lithium to Li2SO4 in synergy with sulfur and oxygen, achieving a lithium leaching extraction rate of 98.91 %. Additionally, the relatively mild reaction conditions preserve the secondary spherical morphology and uniform distribution of NiCoMn-based oxide residue without introducing adverse impurities, ensuring the successful regeneration of high-value NCM cathode materials (R-NCM). The R-NCM material exhibits good discharge capacity (144.3 mA·h/g at 1 C) and relatively stable cycling performance, with a capacity retention rate of 80 % after 150 cycles. This work provides a viable pathway for the efficient and environmental-friendly pyrometallurgical closed-loop recovery of spent lithium-ion batteries.

RESUMEN

Biochar is regarded as a promising lithium-ion batteries anode material, owing to its high cost-effectiveness. However, the poor specific capacity and cycling stability have limited its practical applications. A straightforward and cost-efficient solvothermal method is presented for synthesizing Mn3O4/biochar composites in this study. By adjusting solvothermal temperatures, Mn3O4 with different morphology is prepared and anchored on the biochar surface (MKAC-T) to improve the electrochemical performance. Due to the morphological effect of nanospherical Mn3O4 on the biochar surface, the MKAC-180 anode material demonstrates outstanding reversible capacity (992.5 mAh/g at 0.2 A/g), significant initial coulombic efficiency (61.1 %), stable cycling life (605.3 mAh/g at 1.0 A/g after 1000 cycles), and excellent rate performance (385.8 mAh/g at 1.6 A/g). Moreover, electro-kinetic analysis and ex-situ physicochemical characterizations are employed to illustrate the charge storage mechanisms of MKAC-180 anode. This study provides valuable insights into the "structure-activity relationship" between Mn3O4 microstructure and electrochemical performance for the Mn3O4/biochar composites, illuminating the industrial utilization of biomass carbon anode materials.

RESUMEN

Thrombotic and bleeding events are the most common hematologic complications in patients with mechanically assisted circulation and are closely related to device-induced platelet dysfunction. In this study, we sought to link computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling of blood pumps with device-induced platelet defects. Fresh human blood was circulated in circulatory loops with four pumps (CentriMag, HVAD, HeartMate II, and CH-VAD) operated under a total of six clinically representative conditions. Blood samples were collected and analyzed for glycoprotein (GP) IIb/IIIa activation and receptor shedding of GPIbα and GPVI. In parallel, CFD modeling was performed to characterize the blood flow in these pumps. Numerical indices of platelet defects were derived from CFD modeling incorporating previously derived power-law models under constant shear conditions. Numerical results were correlated with experimental results by regression analysis. The results suggested that a scalar shear stress of less than 75 Pa may have limited contribution to platelet damage. The platelet defect indices predicted by the CFD power-law models after excluding shear stress <75 Pa correlated excellently with experimentally measured indices. Although numerical prediction based on the power-law model cannot directly reproduce the experimental data. The power-law model has proven its effectiveness, especially for quantitative comparisons.

RESUMEN

DOM is the largest reservoir of organic carbon in the world, and it plays a crucial role in the biogeochemical cycles of natural water bodies. A river is a transition area connecting source water and receiving water that controls the DOM exchange between them. Therefore, in this study, ultraviolet visible spectroscopy (UV-vis) and three-dimensional fluorescence spectroscopy (EEMs) combined with parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) were used to analyze the spectral characteristics and sources of dissolved organic matter in the Fuhe River, Xiaobai River, Baigouyin River, and Puhe River of Baiyangdian. The results showed that a245 and a355 in the Fuhe River and Xiaobai River were significantly higher than those in the Baigouyin River and Puhe River. E2/E3 showed that the DOM relative molecular mass of the inflow river water body was Puhe River > Baigouyin River > Fuhe River > Xiaobai River. Three components, tyrosine-like (C1), terrigenous humus (C2), and tryptophan-like (C3), were determined using three-dimensional fluorescence through PARAFAC. There was no difference among the fluorescence components (P>0.05), but there were differences among the C2 and C3 components (P<0.05). The proportion of easily degradable protein-like components (C1+C3) was higher than that of humus-like components (C2). The autogeny index BIX was greater than 1, and the humification index HIX was less than 4, indicating that the autogeny characteristics of the river bodies were obvious, and the humification degree was weak. The FI index was the highest (1.96±0.25), and the HIX index was the lowest (0.46±0.08), and the self-generated source characteristics gradually strengthened along the direction of the river entering the lake, indicating that the water body of the Fuhe River showed higher endogenous and autogenic characteristics. Based on the correlation analysis of fluorescence components and characteristic parameters of DOM, the correlations between the Fuhe River and Xiaobaihe River and between the Baigouyin River and Puhe River bodies were similar. The correlation between fluorescence components of DOM and water quality parameters of each lake was significantly different, and it was strongly correlated with nitrogen and phosphorus in water. According to multiple linear regression analysis, there was no significant difference among C1 components, but there was a significant difference between C2 and C3 components. In summary, the carbon cycle process of Baiyangdian Lake was further understood through the study on the DOM spectral characteristics and sources of the inflow river waters in the summer flood season.

RESUMEN

Recently there has been increased use of mechanical circulatory support in pediatric patients as a bridge to cardiopulmonary recovery or transplantation. However, there are few devices that are optimized and approved for use in pediatric patients. We designed and prototyped a novel integrated pediatric pump lung (PPL) that underwent 30 day in-vivo testing in seven juvenile Dorset Hybrid sheep. Devices were implanted in a right atrial to pulmonary artery configuration. Six of seven sheep survived with a device functioning for 25-35 days. The device flow rate was maintained at 2.08 ± 0.34 to 2.54 ± 0.16 L/min with oxygen transfer of 109.8 ± 24.8 to 151.2 ± 26.2 ml/min over the study duration. Aside from a postoperative drop in hematocrit, all hematologic and blood chemistry test values returned to normal ranges after 1-2 weeks postoperatively. Similarly, lactate dehydrogenase increased postoperatively and returned to baseline. In two sheep, there were early device failures due to oxygenator thrombosis on postoperative days zero and five; they then had oxygenator exchanges with subsequent devices performing stably for 30 days. This study demonstrated that the integrated PPL device exhibited stable performance and acceptable biocompatibility in a 30 day ovine model.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Cholangiocarcinoma represents a malignant neoplasm originating from the hepatobiliary tree, with a subset of tumors developing inside the liver. Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinomas (ICC) commonly exhibit an asymptomatic presentation, rendering both diagnosis and treatment challenging. Cuproptosis, an emerging regulated cell death pathway induced by copper ions, has garnered attention recently. As cancer cells show altered copper metabolism and comparatively higher copper needs, cuproptosis may play a role in the development of ICC. However, studies investigating this possibility are currently lacking. METHODS: Single-cell and bulk RNA sequence data were analyzed, and correlations were established between the expression of cuproptosis-related molecules and ICC patient survival. Genes with predicting survival were used to create a CUPT score using Cox and LASSO regression and tumor mutation burden (TMB) analysis. The CIBERSORT software was employed to characterize immune cell infiltration within the tumors. Furthermore, immune infiltration prediction, biological function enrichment, and drug sensitivity analyses were conducted to explore the potential implications of the cuproptosis-related signature. The effects of silencing solute carrier family 39 member 4 gene (SLC39A4) expression using siRNA were investigated using assays measuring cell proliferation, colony formation, and cell migration. Key genes of cuproptosis were detected by western blotting. RESULTS: The developed CUPT score divided patients into high and low CUPT score groups. Those with a low score had significantly better prognosis and longer survival. In contrast, high CUPT scores were associated with worse clinical outcomes and significantly higher TMB. Comparisons of the two groups also indicated differences in the immune infiltrate present in the tumors. Finally, we were able to identify 95 drugs potentially affecting the cuproptosis pathway. Some of these might be effective in the treatment of ICC. The in vitro experiments revealed that suppressing the expression of SLC39A4 in ICC cell lines resulted in reduced cell proliferation, colony formation, and cell migration. It also led to an increase in cell death and the upregulation of key genes associated with cuproptosis, namely ferredoxin 1 (FDX1) and dihydrolipoyl transacetylase (DLAT). These findings strongly suggest that this cuproptosis-associated molecule may play a pivotal role in the development and metastasis of ICC. CONCLUSIONS: Changes in the expression of a cuproptosis-related gene signature can predict the clinical prognosis of ICC with considerable accuracy. This supports the notion that cuproptosis influences the diversity and complexity of the immune microenvironment, mutational landscape, and biological behavior of ICC. Understanding this pathway better may hold promise for the development of innovative strategies in the management of this disease.

RESUMEN

Shigella typically causes gastrointestinal infections, and extra-intestinal manifestations are rare. We report the first known case of pyogenic cervical spondylitis co-infected with Escherichia coli and Shigella flexneri, highlighting the diagnostic challenges and clinical implications. A 53-year-old woman presented with neck pain for one month. MRI revealed C6 and C7 vertebrae abscesses. The patient underwent anterior cervical debridement and bone-graft fusion. Intraoperative pus culture grew Escherichia coli, while metagenomic next-generation sequencing detected both Escherichia coli and Shigella species. Intravenous imipenem 500 mg every 6 h was administered, leading to full wound healing at a 6-month follow-up. This case emphasizes the importance of considering Shigella infection in the differential diagnosis of pyogenic spondylitis and demonstrates the utility of a multi-pronged diagnostic approach.

RESUMEN

The recovery of valuable metals from waste battery materials and the thermal decomposition of PVC both require significant energy and material consumption. In this study, we propose an innovative strategy that integrates the lithium extraction process from spent LiNi0.85Co0.15Al0.05O2 (S-NCA) with PVC pyrolysis, resulting in a substantial reduction in energy consumption and chemical additive. Various characterization techniques, including SEM, TEM, XRD, and XPS, are employed to investigate the mechanism of gas-solid lithium extraction and provide valuable insights into the migration pathway of lithium from S-NCA to soluble LiCl. The optimal conditions for the process were determined as follows: a temperature of 600 °C, S-NCA/PVC mass ratio of 1:4, and a baking time of 2 h, achieving a lithium extraction efficiency of 94.37 %. The research provides valuable insights for the valorization of PVC thermal decomposition and lithium extraction from NCA, presenting a novel approach for future applications.

RESUMEN

Given the rising lithium-ion battery retirement trend, there is a pressing need for a sustainable, cost-effective, versatile, and industrially viable positive active powder reprocessing method. The current treatment methods require significant amounts of acids, reducing agents, and other additives, resulting in increased treatment expenses and detrimental environmental consequences. This paper proposes a synergistic redox strategy, based on thermodynamic calculations of potential self-promoting reactions in mixed LFP/NCM systems, for the recovery of spent LFP and NCM batteries without the need for additional agents in a milder acidic atmosphere. In this cooperative redox strategy, the spontaneous extraction and oxidation of Fe2+ to Fe3+ took place within the acidic solution atmosphere encapsulating LFP. Simultaneously, NCM underwent further reduction, yielding Ni2+ and Fe2+, thereby enabling the proficient dissolution and segregation of lithium and transition metal ions. The leaching rate of lithium, nickel, cobalt and manganese was close to 100% when the reaction was carried out at 20 °C for 40 min. The final raw material was reprepared into a battery with a capacity of 168.8 mA h g-1 at 1C, and the cycle retention rate was 76.78% after 300 cycles. Regenerating FPO into LFP cathode material achieves closed-loop recycling of all elements and generates 12% higher profits compared to separate processes. Our method proposes a zero-additive battery recycling process and successfully explains the intrinsic redox process.
