RESUMEN

Soybean is an important source of high-quality vegetable protein with various health-improving properties, and its main bioactive substances are small peptides produced by in vitro enzymatic hydrolytic processes. In traditional layer breeding, the nutritional health of roosters is frequently neglected, ultimately affecting the quality and quantity of offspring. This study investigated the effects of various quantities (0%, 0.15%, 0.30%, 0.45%, and 0.60%) of soybean bioactive peptide (SBP) feed additives on immunological and antioxidant functions, gut health, and reproductive performance of roosters. SBP supplementation significantly improved male growth and reproductive performance, including growth rate, feed conversion ratio, reproductive organ development, and semen quality. SBP also increased immune and antioxidant levels, boosted the integrity of the small intestinal physiological structure and barrier function, and diversity of cecal microbes, and decreased the apoptotic ratio of small intestinal epithelial cells. The effects of SBP on various functions of males showed a quadratic trend, with the optimal concentration determined to be 0.45%.

RESUMEN

Bimetallic nanocrystals (NCs) have obtained significant attention due to their unique advantages of the intrinsic properties of individual metals and synergistic enhancements resulting from the electronic coupling between two constituent metals. In this work, Pd@Pt core-shell NCs were prepared through a facile one-pot solution-phase method, which had excellent dispersion and uniform size. Concurrently, ZnO nanosheets were prepared via a hydrothermal method. To explore their potential in nitrogen dioxide (NO2) gas sensing applications, sensitive materials based on ZnO nanosheets with varying mass percentages of Pd@Pt NCs were generated through an impregnation process. The sensor based on 0.3 wt % Pd@Pt-ZnO exhibited remarkable performance, demonstrating a substantial response (Rg/Ra = 60.3) to 50 ppb of NO2 at a low operating temperature of 80 °C. Notably, this sensor reached an outstanding low detection limit of 300 ppt. The enhancement in gas sensing capabilities can be attributed to the sensitization and synergistic effects imparted by the exceptional catalytic activity of Pd@Pt NCs, which significantly promoted the reaction. This research introduces a novel approach for the utilization of core-shell structured bimetallic nanocrystals as modifiers in metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) materials for NO2 detection.

RESUMEN

AIMS: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of intravitreal triamcinolone acetonide (TA) injection at the end of emergency surgery for open globe injury (OGI) to suppress traumatic proliferative vitreoretinopathy (TPVR). METHODS: A single-centre, participant-masked, prospective, randomised controlled clinical trial. A total of 68 globe rupture patients with zone III were randomised to the control group (n=34) or the TA group (n=34) in 1:1 allocation ratio. Patients were treated with 0.1 mL TA in the TA group and 0.1 mL balanced salt solution in the control group at the end of emergency surgery. The primary outcome was the assessment of TPVR during vitrectomy 10±3 days later. Secondary outcomes included visual acuity (VA), retinal attachment rate, macular attachment rate, proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) recurrent rate, side effects 6 months after vitrectomy. RESULTS: During vitrectomy, the TPVR grade of the control group was significantly more severe than the TA group (p=0.028). The TPVR score was significantly better in the TA group (9.30±0.82) than in the control group (6.44±1.06) (p=0.036). The final VA improved in 23 eyes (92%) in the TA group and in 14 eyes (63.64%) in the control group (p=0.008). The retinal attachment rates were 88% and 63.64% in the TA and control group, respectively (p=0.049). The two groups showed no significant difference in macular repositioning and PVR recurrent rate (p=0.215, 0.191). Temporary intraocular pressure elevation occurred in one eye in the TA group after emergency surgery. CONCLUSIONS: Early intravitreal TA injection for OGI effectively reduces TPVR, increases surgical success and improves visual prognosis.

RESUMEN

Autoimmune diseases (AIDs) are immune disorders whose incidence and prevalence are increasing year by year. AIDs are produced by the immune system's misidentification of self-antigens, seemingly caused by excessive immune function, but in fact they are the result of reduced accuracy due to the decline in immune system function, which cannot clearly identify foreign invaders and self-antigens, thus issuing false attacks, and eventually leading to disease. The occurrence of AIDs is often accompanied by the emergence of inflammation, and inflammatory mediators (inflammatory factors, inflammasomes) play an important role in the pathogenesis of AIDs, which mediate the immune process by affecting innate cells (such as macrophages) and adaptive cells (such as T and B cells), and ultimately promote the occurrence of autoimmune responses, so targeting inflammatory mediators/pathways is one of emerging the treatment strategies of AIDs. This review will briefly describe the role of inflammation in the pathogenesis of different AIDs, and give a rough introduction to inhibitors targeting inflammatory factors, hoping to have reference significance for subsequent treatment options for AIDs.

RESUMEN

Tumors, a disease with a high mortality rate worldwide, have become a serious threat to human health. Exonucleotide-5'-nucleotidase (CD73) is an emerging target for tumor therapy. Its inhibition can significantly reduce adenosine levels in the tumor microenvironment. It has a better therapeutic effect on adenosine-induced immunosuppression. In the immune response, extracellular ATP exerts immune efficacy by activating T cells. However, dead tumor cells release excess ATP, overexpress CD39 and CD73 on the cell membrane and catabolize this ATP to adenosine. This leads to further immunosuppression. There are a number of inhibitors of CD73 currently under investigation. These include antibodies, synthetic small molecule inhibitors and a number of natural compounds with prominent roles in the anti-tumor field. However, only a small proportion of the CD73 inhibitors studied to date have successfully reached the clinical stage. Therefore, effective and safe inhibition of CD73 in oncology therapy still holds great therapeutic potential. This review summarizes the currently reported CD73 inhibitors, describes their inhibitory effects and pharmacological mechanisms, and provides a brief review of them. It aims to provide more information for further research and development of CD73 inhibitors.

RESUMEN

Myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury (I/RI) and ventricular remodeling are the critical pathological basis of heart failure. Danlou tablet (Dan) is a kind of Chinese patent medicine used in angina pectoris treatment in China. However, it remains unclear whether and how Dan could protect against cardiac remodeling after myocardial I/RI. In this study, both preventive and therapeutic administration of Dan attenuated ventricular remodeling and cardiac dysfunction at 3 weeks after myocardial I/RI. Dan inhibited Bax/Bcl2 ratio and Caspase3 cleavage in heart tissues and also inhibited apoptosis of human AC16 cells and neonatal rat cardiomyocytes stressed by oxygen and glucose deprivation/reperfusion. Mechanistically, Dan inhibited myocardial apoptosis through phosphorylating AKT and FoxO3a, thereby inhibiting downstream BIM and PUMA expressions. Collectively, these results demonstrate that Dan treatment is effective to protect against cardiac remodeling and dysfunction after myocardial I/RI and provide theoretical basis for its cardioprotection and clinical application in treating ischemic cardiac diseases.

RESUMEN

Objective: To explore the relationship between sports and the prevalence of myopia in young sports-related groups in Tianjin, China. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, a cluster sampling method was used to survey professional athletes in Tianjin, students at Tianjin University of Sport, and Tianjin Vocational College of Sports. All participants completed epidemiological questionnaires and ophthalmic examinations. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to explore the potential risk factors of myopia. Results: This study recruited 1401 participants. The prevalence of myopia was 50.18%. The prevalence of low, moderate, and high myopia were 52.63%, 37.41%, and 9.96%, respectively. There were no sex-related differences in the prevalence of myopia. The odds of having myopia was 1.788 times higher in the indoor sports group than the outdoor sports group (the adjusted odds ratio [OR], 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.391-2.297). Training time of more than 4 h/d (4-6 h/d: OR, 0.539; 95% CI, 0.310-0.938; >6 h/d: OR, 0.466; 95% CI, 0.257-0.844) resulted in a lower risk of myopia. Participants who often used the electronic screen (OR, 1.406; 95% CI, 1.028-1.923) and/or had a family history of myopia (OR, 2.022; 95% CI, 1.480-2.763) were more likely to suffer from myopia. Conclusions: Outdoor sports do not necessarily guarantee to insulate against myopia. Youngsters engaged in outdoor sports had a lower prevalence of myopia than those participating in indoor sports. Electronic screen use, training time, and family history of myopia were also associated with the prevalence of myopia in young sports-related groups.

RESUMEN

Ischemic heart disease is one of the biggest threats to human life in the world. Reperfusion therapy is an effective strategy to reduce infarct size and ischemic injury. However, reperfusion process may cause secondary myocardial injury which is defined as ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI). Exploring potential therapeutic strategy to attenuate IRI is extremely important. Danlou tablet (Dan), a Chinese herbal compound consisting of ten herbs, has been identified to be protective for the heart. However, the mechanism of Dan-induced cardioprotection after acute reperfusion was unelucidated. In this study, to investigate the role and mechanism of Dan in myocardial IRI, we performed acute IRI modeling in mice and oxygen-glucose deprivation-reperfusion (OGD/R)-induced apoptosis in primary neonatal rat cardiomyocytes (NRCMs). We found that Dan had protective effect against acute IRI in mice, as evidenced by reduced infarct size, TUNEL-positive cardiomyocytes (CMs), and Bax/Bcl2 ratio and cleaved-caspase 3/caspase 3 ratio in vivo. Meanwhile, Dan inhibited OGD/R-induced apoptosis of NRCMs in vitro. Mechanistically, Dan could activate proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ) in both IRI hearts and OGD/R-stressed NRCMs, while inhibition of PPARγ attenuated the protective effect of Dan against IRI in vivo and OGD/R-induced CM apoptosis in vitro. These data reveal that Dan attenuates acute myocardial IRI and CM apoptosis through activating PPARγ. Our findings may extend the knowledge of Chinese medicine and provide potential strategy for the precise treatment of ischemic heart diseases.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: To explore the association of cigarette smoking with retinal thickness and vascular structure in an elderly Chinese population. METHODS: This cross-sectional study enrolled employees and retirees aged over 50 years at Tianjin University of Sport from October 2020 to December 2020. Information on smoking status and lifestyle was obtained using a detailed questionnaire. All participants underwent full ophthalmic examination. OCTA image was acquired. Vascular and the thickness parameters in central fovea and peripapillary parameters were automatically calculated. Multiple linear regression analyses were utilized to assess the association of smoking with retinal thickness and vascular structure after controlling potential confounders. RESULTS: Compared with non-smoking adults, current smokers (ß=-36.78; P = 0.01) and ever smokers (ß=-35.45; P = 0.00) tended to have thinner macular fovea. Cigarettes daily, pack-years of smoking and CSI were negatively related to macular thickness (cigarettes daily: ß=-1.43; pack-years: ß=-14.73; CSI: ß=-14.70), while they were positively associated with the circumference (cigarettes daily: ß=0.03; pack-years: ß=0.30; CSI: ß=0.31) and the area of FAZ (cigarettes daily: ß=0.01; pack-years: ß=0.07). CONCLUSIONS: Cigarette smoking seems associated with decreased macular fovea thickness and elevated circumference and area of the FAZ compared to non-smokers. Our data add to evidence of smoking on retinal thickness and the microvascular system in the macular area.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Dry eye syndrome in which tear fluid quality or abnormality, or kinetic abnormality is caused by various reasons, resulting in decreased tear film stability. In recent years, more and more results from the studies indicate that miRNA alterations are involved in dry eye syndrome. And miRNA-146a-5p is a key regulator to regulate the inflammatory response. In this paper, we demonstrated whether miRNA-146a-5p could cure dry eye syndrome by regulating target genes based on network analysis. METHODS: In current study, we collected the blood of patients with dry eye disease served as a model group; the blood of healthy people was served as control group. The expression of miRNA-146a-5p in the patients was detected by RT-PCR, the genes controlled by miRNA-146a-5p were predicted by TargetScan, miRDB, miRWalk, and PicTar databases, and the genes regulated by miRNA-146a-5p which relative with dry eye disease were selected by drawing Venn diagram. RESULTS: The comparison of the general information between patients and healthy people was no significant difference, and it indicated that the two groups were comparable. The results of databases showed that IRAK1 was one of the target genes regulated by miRNA-146a-5p, and it is related to dry eye disease. The expression of miRNA-146a-5p was negatively related to IRAK1 mRNA and protein, while IRAK1 had a positive correlation with IL-6, TNF-α, and CBP proteins. CONCLUSION: These results emphasized that miRNA-146a-5p could inhibit the expression of IRAK1, IL-6, TNF-α, and CBP to help reduce the inflammatory response in dry eye syndrome.

RESUMEN

A simple and sensitive HPLC-MS/MS method was developed and fully validated for simultaneous determination of ginsenoside Rb1, ginsenoside Rg1, paeoniflorin, albiflorin and oxypaeoniflorin in rat plasma. Plasma samples were pretreated with protein precipitation using acetonitrile. The chromatographic separation was carried out on a C18 column with a gradient mobile phase consisting of acetonitrile and water (containing 0.1% formic acid). All analytes and digoxin (internal stand, IS) were quantitated through electrospray ionization in negative ion multiple reaction monitoring mode. All calibration curves exhibited good linearity (r > 0.9960) over a wide concentration range for all components. The intra-day and inter-day precisions (RSD) at three different levels were all <12.0% and the accuracies (RE) ranging from -6.1 to 6.2%. The extraction recoveries of the five compounds ranged from 89.2 to 97.1%. The validated method was successfully applied in a comparative pharmacokinetic study of Wen-Yang-Huo-Xue soft capsule (WYHXSC) in rats. Compared with single pure component, the exposure of the investigated components, except for oxypaeoniflorin, increased after oral administration of WYHXSC in rats, which suggested a synergistic effects between the herbs in the WYHXSC preparations.

RESUMEN

MicroRNA (miRNA) may function as an oncogene or a tumor suppressor in tumorigenesis. However, the mechanism of miRNAs in adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is unclear. Here, we provide evidence that miR-24-3p was downreglated and functions as a tumor suppressor in human lacrimal adenoid cystic carcinoma by suppressing proliferation and migration/invasion while promoting apoptosis. miR-24-3p down-regulated protein kinase C eta (PRKCH) by binding to its untranslated region (3'UTR). PRKCH increased the of the cell growth and migration/invasion in ACC cells and suppressed the expression of p53 and p21 in both mRNA and protein level. The overexpression of miR-24-3p decreased its malignant phenotype. Ectopic expression of PRKCH counteracted the suppression of malignancy induced by miR-24-3p, as well as ectopic expression of miR-24-3p rescued the suppression of PRKCH in the p53/p21 pathway. These results suggest that miR-24-3p promotes the p53/p21 pathway by down-regulating PRKCH expression in lacrimal adenoid cystic carcinoma cells.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To study the effects of yiqi huoxue recipe and Coxsackie B virus type 3 (CVB3) on the expression of ribosomal protein S20 in rat cardiac myocytes, to explore the pathogenesis of myocarditis induced by CVB3 and the mechanism of yiqi huoxue recipe on gene level, and to further investigate whether yiqi huoxue recipe is an effective prescription for CVB3 myocarditis. METHODS: A modified suppression subtractive hybridization (SSH) was used to isolate differentially expressed genes between the CVB3 infection group and the treatment group with yiqi huoxue recipe. The results were further verified by fluorescence RT-PCR. RESULTS: The results of SSH showed that the gene expression of ribosomal protein S20 in the treatment group was higher than that in the CVB3 infection group (P<0.05), which agreed with the results of fluorescent RT-PCR. CONCLUSION: Down-regulation of ribosomal protein S20 mRNA expression might be one of the mechanisms in CVB3 myocarditis, and yiqi huoxue recipe could achieve the treatment of viral myocarditis by regulating the expression of ribosomal protein S20.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of Chinese herbal compound for supplementing qi and activating blood circulation (CHC) on the gap junctional intercellular communication (GJIC) function of myocardial cells in patients with Coxsackie virus B 3 (CVB3) viral myocarditis. METHODS: Expressions of actin and connexin43 (Cx43) in myocardial cells of patients arranged in three groups (the normal control group, the viral infected group and the CHC treated group) were detected by immunohistochemical method; the fluorescence photobleaching recovery rate of cells was detected by laser scanning confocal microscope. RESULTS: As compared with the viral infected group, the expressions of actin and Cx43 were increased and the GJIC function was improved in the CHC treated group. CONCLUSION: CHC could antagonize viral injury on skeleton protein, and repair the structure of gap junction channel to improve the GJIC function of myocardial cells after being attacked by CVB3.

RESUMEN

The ethics of Western medicine and that of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) developed separately in their own ways. The formation and development of ancient medical ethics of China were extensively and deeply influenced by Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism and other religious thought, while the ancient ethic basis of western society was influenced by traditional Judaism, Christianism, Catholicism and other natural philosophical thinking of ancient Greece and Rome. With the progress of medical and life sciences, the medical ethics begins to transfer into the life ethics, thus giving rise to new questions in the ethics of Western medicine and TCM.
