RESUMEN

Bronchorrhea is a watery sputum volume of at least 100 mL/day, which is commonly associated with lung malignancies. We report a 57-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital with a cough, profuse sputum. Chest CTs showed crazy paving pattern and lung nodules. Cell nests were visible on the Thinprep Cytologic Test. The case was considered an invasive mucinous adenocarcinoma of the lung combined with bronchorrhea. Significantly, the sputum volume declined rapidly and did not rise again when the patient was diagnosed with COVID-19 and treated with nirmatrelvir/ritonavir. This case is suggestive of studies related to regulatory mediators associated with bronchorrhea.

Carotenoids perform a broad range of important functions in humans; therefore, carotenoid biofortification of maize (Zea mays L.), one of the most highly produced cereal crops worldwide, would have a global impact on human health. PLASTID TERMINAL OXIDASE (PTOX) genes play an important role in carotenoid metabolism; however, the possible function of PTOX in carotenoid biosynthesis in maize has not yet been explored. In this study, we characterized the maize PTOX locus by forward- and reverse-genetic analyses. While most higher plant species possess a single copy of the PTOX gene, maize carries two tandemly duplicated copies. Characterization of mutants revealed that disruption of either copy resulted in a carotenoid-deficient phenotype. We identified mutations in the PTOX genes as being causal of the classic maize mutant, albescent1. Remarkably, overexpression of ZmPTOX1 significantly improved the content of carotenoids, especially ß-carotene (provitamin A), which was increased by ~threefold, in maize kernels. Overall, our study shows that maize PTOX locus plays an important role in carotenoid biosynthesis in maize kernels and suggests that fine-tuning the expression of this gene could improve the nutritional value of cereal grains.

PURPOSE: To investigate the short-term efficacy of enhanced external counterpulsation (EECP) on chronic insomnia. METHODS: This is a pilot randomized, participant-blind, and sham-controlled study. Forty-six participants with chronic insomnia were randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to receive EECP or sham EECP intervention (total of 35 sessions with 45 min each). The primary outcome was Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). The secondary outcomes included sleep diary, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), Short-Form Health Survey (SF12), flow mediated dilation (FMD), serum biomarkers of melatonin, cortisol, interleukin-6, and high sensitivity C-reactive protein. Outcomes were assessed after treatment and at 3-month follow-up. RESULTS: The PSQI was significantly decreased in both EECP and sham groups after 35-session intervention (13.74 to 6.96 in EECP and 13.04 to 9.48 in sham), and EECP decreased PSQI more than sham EECP (p = 0.009). PSQI in two groups kept improved at 3-month follow-up. After treatment, the total sleep time, sleep efficiency, FMD value and SF12 mental component of EECP group were significantly improved, and group differences were found for these outcomes. At follow-up, total sleep time, sleep efficiency and SF12 mental component of EECP group remained improved, and group difference for SF12 mental component was found. Post-treatment and follow-up HADS-A significantly decreased in both groups, with no differences between groups. Post-treatment serum biomarkers showed no differences within and between groups. LIMITATION: Lack of objective sleep measurement. CONCLUSION: EECP could improve sleep quality and mental quality of life in chronic insomnia and the therapeutic effect maintained for 3 months.

BACKGROUND: Recently, some clinical researches have shown epicardial adipose tissue to play a pivotal role in prognosis for patients treated with percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), but the results are still controversial. A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to investigate the value of epicardial adipose tissue for the prognosis of patients treated with PCI. METHOD: A systematic search was performed using PubMed, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library for studies evaluating the association of EAT and patients treated with PCI published up to January 2023. The Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) was used to assess the quality of the studies. Meta-analysis was performed using Review Manager V.5.3. RESULT: Thirteen studies enrolling 3683 patients were eventually included in our study. The thickness or volume of EAT measured were significantly higher in the ISR group compared to those in the non-ISR group (the standard mean difference of 0.34, 95% CI, 0.18-0.49, p<0.0001; I2=36%). The incidence of no-reflow was significantly higher in the thicker EAT group compared to the thin EAT group (pooled relative ratio 1.52, 95% CI 1.29-1,80, p<0.0001; I2 =0%). Thicker EAT was significantly associated with MACEs (pooled relative ratio 1.50, 95% 1.18-1.90, p=0.008). A lower EAT volume was associated with larger infarct size in STEMI patients treated with primary PCI (standard mean difference -5.45, 95% CI -8.10, -2.80; p<0.0001; I2=0%). CONCLUSION: In summary, our systemic review and meta-analysis suggests that high EAT is related to a significantly increased risk of non-reflow, MACEs, and decreased infarct size in patients with CAD treated with PCI. This paradox phenomenon demonstrates that the quality of EAT may play a more important role than the sole thickness or volume of EAT.

Background: Women typically exhibit weaker attentional control ability than men. Lower resting vagally mediated heart rate variability (vmHRV) is thought to reflect the poorer function of the neurophysiological pathways underlying attentional control and thus, poorer attentional control ability. However, existing findings are inconsistent regarding the relationship between vmHRV and attentional control. Gender may be an important moderator. Objective: To examine whether gender moderates the relationship between resting vmHRV and attentional control, and to provide neurophysiological evidence for elucidating gender differences in attentional control ability. Methods: Two hundred and twenty college students completed the Attentional Control Scale to evaluate their attentional control ability. Resting vmHRV was assessed during a 5 min baseline period using an electrocardiographic amplifier (ECG100C) of the Biopac MP150 physiological recorder. Results: (1) There was no significant difference in the total scores of the Attentional Control Scale between men and women (t = 0.498, p > 0.05), but the scores of the attentional shifting dimension of women were significantly lower than those of men (t = 1.995, p < 0.05); (2) Resting vmHRV was significantly negatively correlated with attentional control in women(r = -0.233, p < 0.01), whereas the correlation was not significant in men; (3) Gender significantly moderated the relationship between resting vmHRV and attentional control (B = -3.088, 95% boot CI [-5.431, -0.745], t = -2.598, p < 0.05); (4) Among participants with lower resting vmHRV, there was no significant difference in attentional control between men and women (B = 2.284, 95% boot CI [-0.748, 5.310], p > 0.05), but among participants with higher resting vmHRV, men scored significantly higher than women in attentional control (B = -3.377, 95% boot CI [-6.406, -0.348], p < 0.05). Conclusion: Gender moderates the relationship between resting vmHRV and attentional control, with higher resting vmHRV in women reflecting a compensatory response to deficits in attentional control.

Evidence regarding associations of general and abdominal obesity with the risk of conventional adenomas (ADs) and serrated polyps (SPs) from Asian population is scarce. Our study aimed to investigate the independent and joint associations of general obesity assessed by body mass index (BMI) and abdominal obesity assessed by waist circumference (WC) or waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) with the risk of ADs and SPs among 25 222 participants recruited by a population-based screening program. Compared to participants with normal BMI, those with a BMI ≥28 kg/m2 had increased risk of ADs (odds ratio [OR] 1.52, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.36-1.70) and SPs (OR 1.69, 95% CI: 1.38-2.07). For participants with a WC ≥102 cm (≥88 cm for females), the risk of ADs (OR 1.37, 95% CI: 1.25-1.51) and SPs (OR 1.81, 95% CI: 1.52-2.16) was higher than that of the reference group. For participants with a WHR ≥0.95 (≥0.90 for females), the risk of ADs (OR 1.26, 95% CI: 1.16-1.36) and SPs (OR 1.46, 95% CI: 1.26-1.69) was higher than that of the reference group. Moreover, participants with both BMI ≥28 kg/m2 and WC ≥102 cm (≥88 cm for females) had 61% and 119% higher risk of ADs (OR 1.61, 95% CI: 1.39-1.85) and SPs (OR 2.19, 95% CI: 1.70-2.82) compared to those with both normal BMI and WC. These findings indicate that both general and abdominal obesity are associated with SPs and ADs, presenting stronger association with SPs than ADs. Moreover, the association is more evident when both obesities exist.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the therapeutic effect of enhanced external counterpulsation (EECP) on radial artery occlusion (RAO) through the oscillatory shear (OS) and pulsatile shear (PS) models of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) and RAO dog models. Methods: We used high-throughput sequencing data GSE92506 in GEO database to conduct time-series analysis of functional molecules on OS intervened HUVECs, and then compared the different molecules and their functions between PS and OS. Additionally, we studied the effect of EECP on the radial artery hemodynamics in Labrador dogs through multi-channel physiological monitor. Finally, we studied the therapeutic effect of EECP on RAO at the histological level through Hematoxylin-Eosin staining, Masson staining, ATPase staining and immunofluorescence in nine Labrador dogs. Results: With the extension of OS intervention, the cell cycle decreased, blood vessel endothelial cell proliferation and angiogenesis responses of HUVECs were down-regulated. By contrast, the inflammation and oxidative stress responses and the related pathways of anaerobic metabolism of HUVECs were up-regulated. Additionally, we found that compared with OS, PS can significantly up-regulate muscle synthesis, angiogenesis, and NO production related molecules. Meanwhile, PS can significantly down-regulate inflammation and oxidative stress related molecules. The invasive arterial pressure monitoring showed that 30Kpa EECP treatment could significantly increase the radial artery peak pressure (p = 0.030, 95%CI, 7.236-82.524). Masson staining showed that RAO significantly increased muscle interstitial fibrosis (p = 0.002, 95%CI, 0.748-2.128), and EECP treatment can reduce this change (p = 0.011, 95%CI, -1.676 to -0.296). ATPase staining showed that RAO significantly increased the area of type II muscle fibers (p = 0.004, 95%CI, 7.181-25.326), and EECP treatment could reduce this change (p = 0.001, 95%CI, -29.213 to -11.069). In addition, immunofluorescence showed that EECP increased angiogenesis in muscle tissue (p = 0.035, 95%CI, 0.024-0.528). Conclusion: EECP improves interstitial fibrosis and hypoxia, and increases angiogenesis of muscle tissue around radial artery induced by RAO.

Background: Since the outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), Chinese college students have spent 3 years dealing with infection prevention. Some students have undergone quarantine due to the detection of new variants of COVID-19 and the rise in cases. This study examines pandemic-related isolation and its psychological impact on Chinese college students and explores the relationships among COVID-19 burnout, resilience, and psychological distress in Chinese college students during the pandemic. Methods: The COVID-19 Burnout Scale, the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, and the Brief Symptom Inventory were used to investigate 388 college students from Nanjing City, China. All participants were enrolled in university after 2019, and they participated in the survey voluntarily via the Internet. Participants were divided into two groups (isolated group vs. non-isolated group) based on whether or not they had been isolated. Results: (1) Significantly lower scores were found for all factors in the isolated group; (2) COVID-19 burnout significantly negatively predicted resilience and significantly positively predicted psychological distress (anxiety, depression, and somatization symptoms), while resilience significantly negatively predicted psychological distress; and (3) Resilience mediated the relationship between COVID-19 burnout and psychological distress. Conclusion: Isolation is a risk factor for psychological distress related to COVID-19. Resilience can buffer psychological distress and help improve Chinese college students' wellbeing during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Background: Much evidence has indicated that physical activity is associated with mental health benefits, such as fewer depression symptoms. Psychological resilience captures a broader mental health phenomenon that may be influenced by other factors as well. Yet, there are few studies examining the association between muscle-strengthening exercises (MSEs) with mental health outcomes, especially positive outcomes (e.g., subjective wellbeing). The study aimed to test the association between MSE with subjective wellbeing and resilience among a large sample of Chinese adolescents. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among primary and middle school students in Shenzhen, China. MSE frequency, subjective wellbeing, and resilience were measured. Data from a total of 67,281 children and adolescents aged 10-17 years (51.9% men and 48.1% women) were included in the analysis. Mixed effect models were performed to assess how weekly MSE frequency (0-7 days) related to the levels of subjective wellbeing and resilience, adjusting for potential confounding variables (e.g., sex and grade). Sensitivity analyses were also conducted. Results: Compared to participants with no MSE, the levels of subjective wellbeing were higher in those with higher MSE frequencies [range of ß: 0.29 (1 day per week) to 1.98 (7 days per week)]. The frequency of MSE was also positively correlated to better resilience [range of ß: 0.50 (1 day per week) to 4.40 (7 days per week)]. All associations remained significant in sensitivity analyses. Conclusion: More frequent MSE was associated with superior subjective wellbeing and resilience of Chinese children and adolescents. Increasing MSE may be beneficial for promoting positive mental health outcomes among children and adolescents.

Selective semi-oxidation of tetrahydroisoquinoline (THIQ) leads to a valuable dihydroisoquinoline (DHIQ) derivative via singlet oxygen photooxidation process. Typical photosensitisers (i.e., Ru complexes) can activate the reaction even under heterogeneous conditions that facilitate catalyst separation and reusability. In contrast to DHIQ, THIQ acts as an efficient singlet oxygen quencher driving the reaction selectivity. The reaction can also be facilitated by semiconductor catalysts such as MoCo@GW, a glass wool-based catalyst that is easy to separate and reuse and compatible with flow photochemistry. Its role is to mediate the formation of isoquinoline (IQ) and thus an in situ-generated singlet oxygen catalyst. Laser flash photolysis with NIR detection provides proof of the singlet oxygen mechanism proposed and rate constants for the key steps that mediate the oxidation.

Test anxiety is a widespread and primarily detrimental emotion in learning and achievement settings. This research aimed to explore the autonomic nervous system (ANS) response patterns of test-anxious individuals in response to evaluative stress. By presenting a standard interview task, an evaluative scenario was effectively induced. Heart rate variability (HRV), a biomarker that can accurately reflect the ANS activity, was used to reflect the physiological responses of 48 high test-anxious subjects and 49 low test-anxious subjects. Results indicate that: (1) both groups show a significantly increased emotional arousal in the evaluative scenario; (2) high test-anxious individuals show a significantly decreased emotional pleasantness in the evaluative scenario, whereas low test-anxious individuals show no significant changes; (3) both groups show a significantly increased low-frequency HRV; (4) high test-anxious individuals show a significantly decreased high-frequency HRV and root mean square of successive heartbeat interval differences (RMSSD), whereas low test-anxious individuals remain stable. These findings suggest that high test-anxious individuals display an increased sympathetic nervous system (SNS) activity and a decreased parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) activity in response to evaluative stress, while low-anxious individuals display an increased SNS activity and a stable PNS activity in response to evaluative stress.

BACKGROUND: Contrast-induced acute kidney injury (CI-AKI) is a common complication after exposure to contrast media. Renal ischaemia occurs in the initial stage of CI-AKI, however, there are very few effective measures to improve renal perfusion. METHODS: A total of 114 patients with an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) of 60-89 ml/min/1.73m2 were randomly assigned to two groups: enhanced external counterpulsation (EECP) group (N = 57) and control group (N = 57). Two hours after contrast exposure, EECP group received EECP treatment for 1 h while no intervention was performed control group. The primary outcome was the incidence of serum cystatin C concentration to 10% above the baseline concentration at 24 h after contrast administration. The secondary outcomes were the incidence of CI-AKI (defined as an increase in serum creatinine concentration to ≥0.5 mg/dl or by 25% compare to the baseline after contrast exposure), contrast clearance and adverse clinical events. RESULTS: The primary outcome was observed in 26 patients (6 EECP and 20 control; 11% vs. 35%; P = 0.002). CI-AKI occurred in four patients (0 EECP and 4 control; 0% vs. 7%; P = 0.042). The clearance rate of iopromide in the initial 3 h was significantly different between EECP and control group (59.92 ± 8.84 vs 46.80 ± 9.26 ml/min/1.73 m2; P < 0.001). No adverse clinical events were observed in this study. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates that EECP increases the contrast clearance and may have an effect in reducing the risk of CI-AKI. The study has been registered in Chinese Clinical Trial Registry (ChiCTR 2,000,039,190).

Severe diseases such as the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the previous SARS and MERS outbreaks, are the result of coronavirus infections and have demonstrated the urgent need for antiviral drugs to combat these deadly viruses. Due to its essential role in viral replication and function, 3CLpro (main coronaviruses cysteine-protease) has been identified as a promising target for the development of antiviral drugs. Previously reported SARS-CoV 3CLpro non-covalent inhibitors were used as a starting point for the development of covalent inhibitors of SARS-CoV-2 3CLpro. We report herein our efforts in the design and synthesis of submicromolar covalent inhibitors when the enzymatic activity of the viral protease was used as a screening platform.

(1) Background: High test-anxious students often fail to perform at their actual level and are prone to choking under pressure (CUP). The aim of the present study was to investigate whether expressive writing (EW) can help high test-anxious individuals reduce the degree of the CUP effect, and whether the intervention effects were different in people with different working memory capacities. (2) Methods: High test-anxious participants wrote expressively (EW group) or neutrally (control group) according to guidance, and then completed a modular arithmetic (MA) task under a high-stress condition. (3) Results: The state anxiety score of the control group was significantly higher than that of the EW group in the high-pressure situation, indicating that the EW intervention was helpful to alleviate the state anxiety. Subjects with high working memory capacity in the control group performed the complex MA task significantly less accurately in the high-stress situation than in the low-stress situation, showing the CUP effect. There was no significant difference in complex MA task scores between high- and low-stress situations for subjects with high working memory capacity in the EW group, indicating that the EW intervention can reduce the degree of the CUP effect. (4) Conclusions: EW intervention was effective in reducing state anxiety levels and attenuating the detrimental effects of test stress on cognitive processing in test-anxious individuals with high working memory capacity.

Heterosis, which has greatly increased maize yields, is associated with gene expression patterns during key developmental stages that enhance hybrid phenotypes relative to parental phenotypes. Before heterosis can be more effectively used for crop improvement, hybrid maize developmental gene expression patterns must be better understood. Here, six maize hybrids, including the popular hybrid Zhengdan958 (ZC) from China, were studied. Maize hybrids created in-house were generated using an incomplete diallel cross (NCII)-based strategy from four elite inbred parental lines. Differential gene expression (DEG) profiles corresponding to three developmental stages revealed that hybrid partial expression patterns exhibited complementarity of expression of certain parental genes, with parental allelic expression patterns varying both qualitatively and quantitatively in hybrids. Single-parent expression (SPE) and parent-specific expression (PSE) types of qualitative variation were most prevalent, 43.73 and 41.07% of variation, respectively. Meanwhile, negative super-dominance (NSD) and positive super-dominance (PSD) types of quantitative variation were most prevalent, 31.06 and 24.30% of variation, respectively. During the early reproductive growth stage, the gene expression pattern differed markedly from other developmental stage patterns, with allelic expression patterns during seed development skewed toward low-value parental alleles in hybrid seeds exhibiting significant quantitative variation-associated superiority. Comparisons of qualitative gene expression variation rates between ZC and other hybrids revealed proportions of SPE-DEGs (41.36%) in ZC seed DEGs that significantly exceeded the average proportion of SPE-DEGs found in seeds of other hybrids (28.36%). Importantly, quantitative gene expression variation rate comparisons between ZC and hybrids, except for transgressive expression, revealed that the ZC rate exceeded the average rate for other hybrids, highlighting the importance of partial gene expression in heterosis. Moreover, enriched ZC DEGs exhibiting distinct tissue-specific expression patterns belonged to four biological pathways, including photosynthesis, plant hormone signal transduction, biology metabolism and biosynthesis. These results provide valuable technical insights for creating hybrids exhibiting strong heterosis.

BACKGROUND: The expression profile of lncRNAs in coronary artery disease (CAD) patients has not yet been fully explored. Therefore, the current study aimed to investigate lncRNA-based prognostic biomarkers for CAD. METHODS: The expression profiles of lncRNA and messenger RNA (mRNA) were downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. Differentially expressed lncRNA (DElncRNAs) and DEmRNAs were identified from CAD and normal samples, and weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) was conducted. Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment analyses were performed to investigate the principal functions of significantly dysregulated genes. The potential drugs of new CAD-specific genes were identified by network distance method. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) was used to verify the classification performance of genes. RESULTS: A total of 512 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and 308 DElncRNAs were identified from GSE113079 dataset to classify CAD samples. Through WGCNA co-expression analysis, 24 co-expression modules were obtained. A total of 187 DElncRNAs and 253 DEGs were determined from 7 modules correlated with CAD. Functional enrichment analysis showed that these DEGs were mainly related to inflammatory and immune-related pathways. Furthermore, 36 regulatory pairs of significantly shared micro RNAs (miRNAs) were identified as dysregulated lncRNA-mRNA (LRM-CAD), which contained 11 lncRNAs and 33 genes. Compared with a single lncRNA or gene, LRM-CAD showed stronger classification performance [average area under the curve (AUC) =0.958]. We screened 3 potential therapeutic drugs, DB09105, DB12371, and DB12612, a by binding drug-target gene interaction network. Molecular docking verified that the S1PR1 gene bound relatively closely to DB12371 and DB12612. The ROC analysis on external data sets showed that S1PR1, AC012640.4, and S1PR1-AC012640.4 could effectively distinguish CAD samples from control samples. CONCLUSIONS: We provided a transcriptome overview of abnormally expressed lncRNAs in CAD patients and identified novel biomarkers for diagnosing CAD.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of pulse pressure (PP) on cognition and the role of white matter lesions (WMLs) in mediating this association. We enrolled 3,009 participants from the SPRINT-MIND study. Of those, 755 participants underwent brain magnetic resonance imaging. Cognitive tests were summarized in five cognition domains, including global cognition, executive function, attention, memory, and language. Multiple linear regression models were employed to analyze PP in association with cognition, and mediation analysis was applied to determine the role of WMLs in the association between PP and cognition. We found that PP was negatively linearly associated with global cognition (ß = -0.048, P = 0.008), executive function (ß = -0.014, P = 0.040), attention (ß = -0.013, P = 0.035), memory (ß = -0.021, P = 0.045), and language (ß = -0.020, P = 0.001), respectively. Furthermore, PP was not significantly associated with brain component volume changes, except for WMLs (ß = 0.029, P = 0.044). Additionally, mediation analysis showed that increased WML volume contributed to 10.8% of global cognition, 9.5% of executive function, 10.6% of memory, and 7.2% of language decline associated with PP. Exposure to higher PP levels was associated with poor cognitive performance, and WMLs partially moderated the influence of PP on cognition.

Currently, the role of lncRNA in myocardial infarction (MI) is poorly understood. 17 co-expression modules were determined, specifically, the greenyellow, saddlebrown, grey60, royalblue, lightgreen, white, and pink modules were specifically expressed in the acute phase of MI, and brown, darkred, and royalblue, while greenyellow modules were specifically expressed in MI compared with CAD. 12 time-dependent of lncRNA/mRNA clusters with consistent expression trends were also identified. MI-associated modules were mainly enriched to immune, cell cycle, and metabolic pathways. We further obtained a network of 1816 lncRNA-mRNAs with higher expression correlations among these lncRNAs by analyzing the topological properties of the network. Herein, lncRNA RP11-847H18.2 and KLHL28, SPRTN, and EPM2AIP1 were determined as gene markers specifically expressed in MI, and they demonstrated a high predictive performance for MI diagnosis and prognosis. Three drugs, namely, Calcium citrate, Calcium Phosphate, and Calcium phosphate dihydrate, were identified as potential precursors of MI. Finally, gene and lncRNA diagnostic models were developed based on these genes and lncRNAs, with their AUCs averaged above 0.89 in both training and validation datasets. The findings of this study improve the diagnosis and prognosis of MI and personalized treatment of MI.

Bi2+xWO6 is a cost-effective and environmentally friendly photocatalyst that shows high reactivity in the oxidation of various contaminants under visible light. However, under alkaline conditions, the reactive oxidative species in the Bi2+xWO6 system are still not clear yet. In this study, it is observed that the oxidation rates of As(iii) increase with increasing pH values in the Bi2.15WO6 system. Photoluminescence and the Mott-Schottky analyses confirm that OH- promotes the separation and transfer of photogenerated electron-hole pairs over Bi2.15WO6, thus facilitating the oxidation of As(iii). Electron spin resonance spectra analysis and quenching experiments rule out contributions of •OH, O2˙-, 1O2 and superoxo species to As(iii) oxidation and indicate that surface -OOH and/or H2O2 are indeed the predominant species under alkaline conditions. The improved production of H2O2 by H-donors such as glucose and phenol, as well as the UV-vis diffuse reflectance and Raman analyses, further confirms the formation of surface -OOH on Bi2.15WO6 under alkaline conditions. In the dark, the significant higher oxidation rate of As(iii) by H2O2-Bi2.15WO6 than that by H2O2 alone reveals that surface -OOH, instead of H2O2, plays an important role in As(iii) oxidation. This study enriches our understanding of the diversity of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the Bi2.15WO6 system and gives new insight into the mechanism involved in the oxidation of As(iii) under alkaline conditions.

BACKGROUND: Population aging is an inevitable trend and previous studies have showed the relationship between social health related factors and health-related quality of life (HR-QOL) in the elderly. The objective of this study is to investigate the association of social health status with HR-QOL among community-dwelling elderly in Zhejiang. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was based on community-dwelling elderly individuals from July 2018 to September 2018 in Zhejiang, China. HR-QOL was measured by the 12-item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-12). Social health status was estimated by the long-form of the Social Health Scale for the Elderly (SHSE-L) and classified into three categories (poor, moderate and good). Multivariable linear regression models were conducted to evaluate the association between social health status and HR-QOL (PCS, MCS and SF-12 total score). RESULTS: A total of 2952 elderly participants were included in this study. The mean age was 70.68 ± 7.75 years (mean ± SD); of the eligible participants, more than half (50.4%) were females; the mean scores were 48.10 ± 8.49, 47.70 ± 7.09 and 47.90 ± 5.86 for PCS, MCS and SF-12 total score, separately. Results from the multivariable models showed that social health status was positively related to HR-QOL after adjusting for covariates. Compared with individuals with a poor social health status, those who had a moderate or good social health status were more likely to report better HR-QOL (for moderate social health status: ß = 1.90(95%CI: 1.09, 2.71) for PCS, ß = 1.78(1.08, 2.48) for MCS, ß = 1.84(1.29, 2.39) for SF-12 total score; for good social health status: ß = 3.29(2.24, 4.34) for PCS, ß = 3.10(2.12, 4.01) for MCS, ß = 3.20(2.48, 3.91) for SF-12 total score). CONCLUSION: In our study, we found that social health status was positively associated with HR-QOL among the elderly in Zhejiang. Our findings could provide valuable information for decision-makers to develop interventions to improve the HR-QOL of the elderly.
