RESUMEN

BACKGROUND AND AIM: In this study, a deep learning algorithm was used to predict the survival rate of colon cancer (CC) patients, and compared its performance with traditional Cox regression. METHODS: In this population-based cohort study, we used the characteristics of patients diagnosed with CC between 2010 and 2015 from the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) database. The population was randomized into a training set (n = 10 596, 70%) and a test set (n = 4536, 30%). Brier scores, area under the (AUC) receiver operating characteristic curve and calibration curves were used to compare the performance of the three most popular deep learning models, namely, artificial neural networks (ANN), deep neural networks (DNN), and long-short term memory (LSTM) neural networks with Cox proportional hazard (CPH) model. RESULTS: In the independent test set, the Brier values of ANN, DNN, LSTM and CPH were 0.155, 0.149, 0.148, and 0.170, respectively. The AUC values were 0.906 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.897-0.916), 0.908 (95% CI 0.899-0.918), 0.910 (95% CI 0.901-0.919), and 0.793 (95% CI 0.769-0.816), respectively. Deep learning showed superior promising results than CPH in predicting CC specific survival. CONCLUSIONS: Deep learning showed potential advantages over traditional CPH models in terms of prognostic assessment and treatment recommendations. LSTM exhibited optimal predictive accuracy and has the ability to provide reliable information on individual survival and treatment recommendations for CC patients.

RESUMEN

AIMS: Limited understanding exists regarding the neurobiological mechanisms underlying non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) and suicide attempts (SA) in depressed adolescents. The maturation of brain network is crucial during adolescence, yet the abnormal alternations in depressed adolescents with NSSI or NSSI+SA remain poorly understood. METHODS: Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data were collected from 114 depressed adolescents, classified into three groups: clinical control (non-self-harm), NSSI only, and NSSI+SA based on self-harm history. The alternations of resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC) were identified through support vector machine-based classification. RESULTS: Convergent alterations in NSSI and NSSI+SA predominantly centered on the inter-network RSFC between the Limbic network and the three core neurocognitive networks (SalVAttn, Control, and Default networks). Divergent alterations in the NSSI+SA group primarily focused on the Visual, Limbic, and Subcortical networks. Additionally, the severity of depressive symptoms only showed a significant correlation with altered RSFCs between Limbic and DorsAttn or Visual networks, strengthening the fact that increased depression severity alone does not fully explain observed FC alternations in the NSSI+SA group. CONCLUSION: Convergent alterations suggest a shared neurobiological mechanism along the self-destructiveness continuum. Divergent alterations may indicate biomarkers differentiating risk for SA, informing neurobiologically guided interventions.

RESUMEN

We proposed a far-infrared tunable metamaterial absorber using vanadium dioxide (VO2) and graphene as controlling materials. The properties of the absorber are investigated theoretically using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) technique. It was found that when the Fermi energy level of graphene is fixed at zero, VO2 is in the insulated state, and the metasurface exhibits far-infrared broadband absorption performance, with absorptance exceeding 90% in the wavelength range of 12.6 µm to 23.2 µm. In addition, by elevating the Fermi energy level of graphene, the absorption bandwidth of the device is expanded continuously. When the VO2 is in the metallic state, the device can flexibly transform into a far-infrared narrowband absorber. The device also has the advantage of being insensitive to changes in polarization and incident angle. The origin of the absorption and the tuning principle of the device were analyzed and verified successfully by using an equivalent circuit model (ECM). Besides, we also studied the refraction index sensing characteristics of the absorber. Surprisingly, the absorber exhibits excellent sensing characteristics, and its sensitivity (S) reaches 14.108 µm per RIU and the figure of merit (FOM) is 6.13 per RIU.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: There is currently limited information on the utility of transthoracic echocardiography (TTE)-derived Doppler parameters for assessing bioprosthetic tricuspid valve (BTV) dysfunction. Our study aimed to establish the precision and appropriate reference ranges for routinely collected transthoracic Doppler parameters in the assessment of BTV dysfunction. METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated 100 BTV patients who underwent TTE. Based on redo surgical confirmation or more than 2 repeat TTE or transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) examinations, patients were allocated to normal (n = 61), regurgitant (n = 24), or stenotic (n = 15) BTV group. Univariate and multivariate binary logistic regression were performed to identify TTE Doppler parameters that detected BTV dysfunction. RESULTS: The VTI ratio (VTITV/VTILVOT) was the most accurate Doppler parameter for detecting BTV dysfunction, with a ratio of >2.8 showing 84.6% sensitivity and 90.2% specificity. VTI ratio > 3.2, mean gradient (MGTV) > 6.2 mmHg and pressure half-time > 218 ms detected significant BTV stenosis, with sensitivities of 100%, 93.3% and 93.3% and specificities of 82.4%, 75.3% and 87.1%, respectively. After multivariate analysis, the VTI ratio > 2.8 (OR = 9.00, 95% CI = 2.13-41.61, p = .003) and MGTV > 5.1 mmHg (OR = 6.50, 95% CI = 1.69-27.78, p = .008) were the independent associations of BTV dysfunction. With these cutoff values, 75.0%-92.2% of normal and 62.5%-96.0% of dysfunctional BTV were identified. CONCLUSIONS: Doppler parameters from TTE can accurately identify BTV dysfunction, particularly with VTI ratio > 2.8 and MGTV > 5.1 mmHg, to assess the need for additional testing with TEE.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: In facial plastic surgery, patients with nasal deformity are often treated by rib cartilage transplantation. In recent years, cartilage tissue engineering has developed as an alternative to complex surgery for patients with minor nasal defects via injection of nasal filler material. In this study, we prepared an injectable nasal filler material containing poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) porous microspheres (PMs), hyaluronic acid (HA) and adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ADMSCs). METHODS: We seeded ADMSCs into as-prepared PLLA PMs using our newly invented centrifugation perfusion technique. Then, HA was mixed with ADMSC-incorporated PLLA PMs to form a hydrophilic and injectable cell delivery system (ADMSC-incorporated PMH). RESULTS: We evaluated the biocompatibility of PMH in vitro and in vivo. PMH has good injectability and provides a favorable environment for the proliferation and chondrogenic differentiation of ADMSCs. In vivo experiments, we observed that PMH has good biocompatibility and cartilage regeneration ability. CONCLUSION: In this study, a injectable cell delivery system was successfully constructed. We believe that PMH has potential application in cartilage tissue engineering, especially in nasal cartilage regeneration.

RESUMEN

Lung cancer is one of the malignancies with the highest incidence and mortality rates worldwide, and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) accounts for about 85% of all lung cancer types. In this study, the anti-cancer activities of a novel flurbiprofen organic selenium compound, RY-1-92, on NSCLC cells and a mouse model and the underlying molecular mechanisms were explored. We found that compound RY-1-92 can significantly inhibit the viability, colony formation and migration of A549, NCI-H460 lung cancer cells. Flow cytometry analysis showed that RY-1-92 also can lead to G2/M cell cycle arrest and apoptosis induced in lung cancer cells. Further, RY-1-92 can decrease the tumor size in the Lewis lung cancer tumor-bearing mouse model. The protein levels of cell cycle-related proteins CDK1/cyclinB1 were decreased, while the apoptosis-related protein BAX was increased dramatically after RY-1-92 treatment in vitro and in vivo. Impressively, it was found that TRPV1 might act as a potential molecular target of RY-1-92 using the SEA search server. Furthermore, down-regulation on TRPV1 and its downstream associated factors including p-AKT protein and MAPK signaling pathway-related proteins after RY-1-92 treatment was observed in A549, NCI-H460 lung cancer cells. Taken together, our findings shed light on the potential of RY-1-92 as a novel small molecular drug for NSCLC, and it is of great significance for its further in-depth research and development.

RESUMEN

Catheter ablation has become an accepted first line therapy for paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF), with pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) being the key element of ablation strategies. Catheter ablation of AF has been proven to be superior to antiarrhythmic drug (AAD) therapy regarding efficacy and improvement of survival in patients with heart failure. PVI has become a routine treatment procedure in recent decades especially for patients with symptomatic PAF. Recent research investigations have shown that AF recurrence still occurs in a significant number of patients after ablation. AF recurrence leads to a decrease in patients' quality of life and is related to an increased risk of cardiovascular events and mortality. As most arrhythmia recurrences take place within the first 3 months after the initial procedure, this time period is seen as a so-called "blanking period", in which ablation is not recommended, since up to 50 % of patients can become arrhythmia free in the long run. Ablation therapy, however, is less successful in patients suffering from long standing persistent AF, with a 20.3 % success rate after a single procedure and a 45 % success rate after multiple RFA procedures. Several scores have been established and validated to predict cardiac rhythm outcomes after catheter ablation. However, due to the lack of external validation of most of the scores, their efficacy in predicting recurrence of atrial fibrillation needs to be further evaluated in independent external studies.

RESUMEN

Viscosity and sulfur dioxide derivatives were significant indicators for the assessment of health threat and even cancers, therefore, on-site and real time detection of viscosity and sulfur dioxide derivatives has obtained considerable attentions. An FRET-based fluorescence probe JZX was designed and synthesized based on a novel energy donor of N,N-diethyl-4-(1H-phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazol-2-yl)benzamide fluorophore. JZX exhibited a large Stokes shift (230 nm), high energy transfer efficiency, wide emission channel gap (135 nm) and excellent stability and biocompatibility. JZX detected sulfur dioxide with low detection limit (55 nM), fast responding (16 min), high selectivity and sensitivity. Additionally, JZX tend to target endoplasmic reticulum of which normal metabolism will be disturbed by the abnormal levels of viscosity and sulfur dioxide derivatives. Prominently, JZX could concurrently detect viscosity and sulfur dioxide derivatives depending on different fluorescence signals in living cells for the screening of cancer cells. Hence, probe JZX will be a promising candidate for the detection of viscosity and sulfur dioxide derivatives, and even for the diagnosis of liver cancers.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The biological process of aging plays an important role in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) development. However, epidemiological evidence about the association of biological aging with mortality risk among people with NAFLD is limited. METHODS: A total of 2199 participants with NAFLD from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) III were included. The outcomes were all-cause and cause-specific (cardiovascular disease [CVD], cancer, and diabetes) mortality. We computed three BA measures, the Klemera-Doubal method (KDM) age, Phenotypic age, and homeostatic dysregulation (HD), by using 18 age-associated clinical biomarkers, and assessed their associations with mortality risk using Cox proportional hazards (CPH) models. RESULTS: After a median follow-up of 16 years, a total of 1077 deaths occurred. People with NAFLD who died during follow-up period exhibited higher baseline biological age (BA) and biological age accelerations (BAAs). The multivariate-adjusted CPH suggested that a one-standard deviation (SD) increase in KDM age acceleration, Phenotypic age acceleration, or HD was associated with a 3 %, 7 %, or 39 % elevated risk of all-cause mortality, respectively. The results of age-varying HRs showed that the associations of KDM age accelerations (AAs) and Phenotypic AAs with all-cause mortality appeared to be stronger in people with NAFLD younger than 45 years. CONCLUSIONS: Biological aging was positively associated with both all-cause and cause-specific mortality among people with NAFLD, particularly among younger individuals.

RESUMEN

Ion-selective nanochannel membranes assembled from two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets hold immense promise for power conversion using salinity gradient. However, they face challenges stemming from insufficient surface charge density, which impairs both permselectivity and durability. Herein, we present a novel vacancy-engineered, oxygen-deficient NiCo layered double hydroxide (NiCoLDH)/cellulose nanofibers-wrapped carbon nanotubes (VOLDH/CNF-CNT) composite membrane. This membrane, featuring abundant angstrom-scale, cation-selective nanochannels, is designed and fabricated through a synergistic combination of vacancy engineering and interfacial super-assembly. The membrane shows interlayer free-spacing of ~3.62 Å, which validates the membrane size exclusion selectivity. This strategy, validated by DFT calculations and experimental data, improves hydrophilicity and surface charge density, leading to the strong interaction with K+ ions to benefit the low ion transport resistance and exceptional charge selectivity. When employed in an artificial river water|seawater salinity gradient power generator, it delivers a high-power density of 5.35 W/m2 with long-term durability (20,000s), which is almost 400% higher than that of the pristine NiCoLDH membrane. Furthermore, it displays both pH- and temperature-sensitive ion transport behavior, offering additional opportunities for optimization. This work establishes a basis for high-performance salinity gradient power conversion and underscores the potential of vacancy engineering and super-assembly in customizing 2D nanomaterials for diverse advanced nanofluidic energy devices.

RESUMEN

Background: Apolipoprotein (Apo) may be associated with sarcopenia in elderly inpatients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), but fewer studies are available. In this study, we explored the association of ApoA1, ApoB, and ApoB/ApoA1 with sarcopenia and compared the predictive role of Apo indicators for sarcopenia in an elderly T2DM. Objective: To investigate the relationships between the Apo and sarcopenia in elderly inpatients with T2DM. Methods: This study included 253 inpatients with T2DM (mean age of 70.11±5.44 years, 32.8% male). The inpatients were divided into the sarcopenic group (n = 100) and non-sarcopenic group (n = 153). The associations among the Apo and sarcopenia were assessed using multivariate analyses. Results: Inpatients in the sarcopenia group showed lower ApoA1 levels than those in the non-sarcopenia group (1.25±0.21 vs 1.36±0.20 g/L, P < 0.05) and showed higher ApoB/ApoA1 and ApoB levels than those in the non-sarcopenia group (0.82±0.27 vs 0.69±0.19 g/L, P < 0.05;1.00±0.32 vs 0.93±0.24 g/L, P < 0.05, respectively). After adjusting for age and BMI, the logistic regression model indicated that ApoA1 was a protective factor for elderly inpatients with T2DM sarcopenia.(OR =0.079,95% CI: 0.021~0.306, P < 0.05);ApoB and AopB/AopA1 were risk factors for elderly inpatients with T2DM sarcopenia.(OR =3.578,95% CI:1.318~9.715, P < 0.05;OR =16.440,95% CI:4.437~60.427, P < 0.05, respectively). AopB/AopA1 provided an AUC value of 0.765 in elderly men.(95% CI: 0.665~0.866, P<0.05). Conclusion: ApoA1, AopB, and AopB/AopA1 are associated with sarcopenia in elderly inpatients with T2DM, and AopB/AopA1 may be a potential predictor of sarcopenia in elderly men with T2DM.

RESUMEN

Osteoporosis is the most common skeletal disease characterized by an imbalance between bone resorption and bone remodeling. Osteoporosis can lead to bone loss and bone microstructural deterioration. This increases the risk of bone fragility and fracture, severely reducing patients' mobility and quality of life. However, the specific molecular mechanisms involved in the development of osteoporosis remain unclear. Increasing evidence suggests that multiple noncoding RNAs show differential expression in the osteoporosis state. Meanwhile, noncoding RNAs have been associated with an increased risk of osteoporosis and fracture. Noncoding RNAs are an important class of factors at the level of gene regulation and are mainly involved in cell proliferation, cell differentiation, and cell death. Programmed cell death is a genetically-regulated form of cell death involved in regulating the homeostasis of the internal environment. Noncoding RNA plays an important role in the programmed cell death process. The exploration of the noncoding RNA-programmed cell death axis has become an interesting area of research and has been shown to play a role in many diseases such as osteoporosis. In this review, we summarize the latest findings on the mechanism of noncoding RNA-mediated programmed cell death on bone homeostasis imbalance leading to osteoporosis. And we provide a deeper understanding of the role played by the noncoding RNA-programmed cell death axis at the gene regulatory level of osteoporosis. We hope to provide a unique opportunity to develop novel diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for osteoporosis.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: This study was to systematically assess the occipital lobe gray and white matter volume of isolated ventriculomegaly (IVM) fetuses with MRI and to follow up the neurodevelopment of participants. METHOD: MRI was used to evaluate 37 IVM fetuses and 37 control fetuses. The volume of gray and white matter in each fetal occipital gyrus was manually segmented and compared, and neurodevelopment was followed up and assessed in infancy and early childhood. RESULT: Compared with the control group, the volume of gray matter in occipital lobe increased in the IVM group, and the incidence of neurodevelopmental delay increased. CONCLUSION: We tested the hypothesis that prenatal diagnosis IVM represents a biological marker for development in fetal occipital lobe. Compared with the control group, the IVM group showed differences in occipital gray matter development and had a higher risk of neurodevelopmental delay.

RESUMEN

Immobilizing DNA with high accessibility at the interface is attractive but challenging. Current methods often involve multiple chemical reactions and derivatives. In this study, an endonuclease, TC1, is introduced to develop a robust strategy for immobilizing DNA with enhanced accessibility. TC1 enables direct immobilization of DNA onto a solid support through self-catalytic DNA covalent coupling and robust solid adsorption capabilities. This method demonstrates high accessibility to target molecules, supported by the improved sensitivity of DNA hybridization and aptamer-target recognition assays. TC1-mediated DNA immobilization is a one-pot reaction that does not require chemical derivatives, making it promising for the development of high-performance DNA materials and technologies.

RESUMEN

China proposed establishing a carbon emission trading market in its 12th Five-Year Plan to reduce carbon dioxide emissions through market mechanisms, promote the development of science and technology and help China become an environment-friendly country. To examine the impact of carbon emission trading on green technology innovation in Chinese energy enterprises, data from 1993 to 2020 were collected from 494 A-share-listed energy enterprises. Enterprises located in the pilot area of carbon emissions trading were assigned to the treatment group, while those in the non-pilot area were assigned to the control group. The propensity-score-matching method was utilized to match the treatment group with the control group, and the resulting samples were used as the actual sample data. The difference-in-differences method was then employed to assess the net impact of carbon emission trading and investigate its effect on green technology innovation in energy enterprises. This empirical study suggested that carbon emission trading has a positive impact on green technology innovation in energy enterprises, particularly state-owned ones. Larger enterprises are more willing to engage in green technological innovation than small enterprises. Furthermore, when faced with a carbon emission trading system, 'mature' companies tend to pay more attention to green technology innovation than younger enterprises do. This study puts forward policy measures for establishing a national-level carbon emission market in China in the future.

RESUMEN

The impact of early life exposure to residential greenness on childhood rhinitis and its interaction with particulate matter (PM) of different size fractions remain inconsistent. Herein, we recruited 40,486 preschool children from randomly selected daycare centers in 7 cities in China from 2019 to 2020, and estimated exposure to residential greenness by the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) with a 500 m buffer. Exposure to ambient PM (PM1, PM2.5, and PM10) was evaluated using a satellite-based prediction model (daily, at a resolution of 1 km × 1 km). By mixed-effect logistic regression, NDVI values during pregnancy, in the first (0-1 year old) and the second (1-2 years old) year of life were negatively associated with lifetime rhinitis (LR) and current rhinitis (CR) (P < 0.001). PM in the same time windows was associated with increased risks of LR and CR in children, with smaller size fraction of PM showing greater associations. The negative associations between prenatal and postnatal NDVI and LR and CR in preschool children remained robust after adjusting for concomitant exposure to PM, whereas the associations of postnatal NDVI and rhinitis showed significant interactions with PM. At lower levels of PM, postnatal NDVI remained negatively associated with rhinitis and was partly mediated by PM (10.0-40.9 %), while at higher levels of PM, the negative associations disappeared or even turned positive. The cut-off levels of PM were identified for each size fraction of PM. In conclusion, prenatal exposure to greenness had robust impacts in lowering the risk of childhood rhinitis, while postnatal exposure to greenness depended on the co-exposure levels to PM. This study revealed the complex interplay of greenness and PM on rhinitis in children. The exposure time window in prenatal or postnatal period and postnatal concomitant PM levels played important roles in influencing the associations between greenness, PM and rhinitis.

RESUMEN

Mirikizumab is a humanized anti-interleukin-23p19 monoclonal antibody being developed for ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease. We characterized the relationship of mirikizumab systemic exposure with efficacy and safety end points in patients with UC using phase II (NCT02589665) and III (NCT03518086, NCT03524092) trial data. Exposure-response models were developed for clinical remission, clinical response, endoscopic remission, and change in modified Mayo score following induction (50-1,000 mg i.v. every 4 weeks) and maintenance (200 mg s.c. every 4 or 12 weeks) treatment. These models evaluated observed and pharmacokinetic model-predicted mirikizumab exposures as the exposure measure. Key safety event rates were compared across mirikizumab exposure quartiles in the phase III trial. Mirikizumab efficacy in patients with UC showed an apparent positive association with systemic exposure following both induction and maintenance. However, further analysis found this relationship to be overstated by the presence of confounding factors that were not among the tested patient covariates. While prior biologic experience and baseline disease severity showed statistically significant influences on estimated placebo effect, no patient factors affected the mirikizumab effect parameters in any of the phase III exposure-response models. There was no apparent mirikizumab concentration relationship with any adverse event of special interest. When the phase II and III data and confounding are considered together, efficacy was unlikely to be strongly affected by variation in exposures across individual patients at the phase III dose. Together with the previously demonstrated mirikizumab exposure insensitivity to patient factors, these findings indicate that mirikizumab dose adjustment to patient characteristics is not required.

RESUMEN

A timely inflammatory response is crucial for early viral defense, but uncontrolled inflammation harms the host. Retinoic acid-inducible gene I (RIG-I) has a pivotal role in detecting RNA viruses, yet the regulatory mechanisms governing its sensitivity remain elusive. Here we identify PTENα, an N-terminally extended form of PTEN, as an RNA-binding protein with a preference for the CAUC(G/U)UCAU motif. Using both in vivo and in vitro viral infection assays, we demonstrated that PTENα restricted the host innate immune response, relying on its RNA-binding capacity and phosphatase activity. Mechanistically, PTENα directly bound to viral RNA and enzymatically converted its 5'-triphosphate to 5'-monophosphate, thereby reducing RIG-I sensitivity. Physiologically, brain-intrinsic PTENα exerted protective effects against viral inflammation, while peripheral PTENα restricted host antiviral immunity and, to some extent, promoted viral replication. Collectively, our findings underscore the significance of PTENα in modulating viral RNA- and RIG-I-mediated immune recognition, offering potential therapeutic implications for infectious diseases.

RESUMEN

The increasing number of vehicles are emitting a large amount of particles into the atmosphere, causing serious harm to the ecological environment and human health. This study conducted the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Cycle (WLTC) to investigate the emission characteristics of particle number (PN) of China-VI gasoline vehicles with different gasoline. The gasoline with lower aromatic hydrocarbons and olefins reduced particulate matter (PM) and PN emissions by 24% and 52% respectively. The average PN emission rate of the four vehicles during the first 300 s (the cold start period) was 7.2 times that of the 300 s-1800s. Additionally, because the particle transmission time and instrument response time, the test results of instantaneous emissions of PN were not synchronized with vehicle specific power (VSP). By calculating the Spearman correlation coefficient between pre-average vehicle specific power (PAVSP) and the test results of PN instantaneous emissions, the delay time was determined as 10s. After the PN emissions results were corrected, the PN emissions were found to be more related to VSP. By analyzing the influence of driving status on emission, this study found that vehicles in acceleration mode increased PN emissions by 76% compared to those in constant speed mode.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a promising therapy for refractory Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS). However, its long-term efficacy, safety, and recommended surgical age remain controversial, requiring evidence to compare different age categories. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study recruited 102 GTS patients who underwent DBS between October 2006 and April 2022 at two national centers. Patients were divided into two age categories: children (aged < 18 years; n = 34) and adults (aged ≥ 18 years; n = 68). The longitudinal outcomes as tic symptoms were assessed by the YGTSS, and the YBOCS, BDI, and GTS-QOL were evaluated for symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), depression, and quality of life, respectively. RESULTS: Overall, these included patients who finished a median 60-month follow-up, with no significant difference between children and adults (p = 0.44). Overall, the YGTSS total score showed significant postoperative improvements and further improved with time (improved 45.2%, 51.6%, 55.5%, 55.6%, 57.8%, 61.4% after 6, 12, 24, 36, 48, and ≥ 60 months of follow-up compared to baseline, respectively) in all included patients (all p < 0.05). A significantly higher improvement was revealed in children than adults at ≥ 60 months of follow-up in the YGTSS scores (70.1% vs 55.9%, p = 0.043), and the time to achieve 60% improvement was significantly shorter in the children group (median 6 months vs 12 months, p = 0.013). At the last follow-up, the mean improvements were 45.4%, 48.9%, and 55.9% and 40.3%, 45.4%, and 47.9% in YBOCS, BDI, and GTS-QOL scores for children and adults, respectively, which all significantly improved compared to baseline (all p < 0.05) but without significant differences between these two groups (all p > 0.05), and the children group received significantly higher improvement in GTS-QOL scores than adults (55.9% vs. 47.9%, p = 0.049). CONCLUSIONS: DBS showed acceptable long-term efficacy and safety for both children and adults with GTS. Surgeries performed for patients younger than 18 years seemed to show acceptable long-term efficacy and safety and were not associated with increased risks of loss of benefit compared to patients older than 18 at the time of surgery. However, surgeries for children should also be performed cautiously to ensure their refractoriness and safety.
