RESUMEN

Precipitation was an important obstacle to improving zinc's bioavailability. Therefore, zinc-whey protein hydrolysate-chitosan oligosaccharide (Zn-WPH-COS) complexes (167 nm) were prepared by linking Zn-WPH (zinc: 18.4%) with COS (1:1, 2 h) to enhance zinc's bioaccessibility. Fourier-transform infrared showed Zn-WPH formed with zinc replaced hydrogen (from 3274 to 3279 cm-1) and reacted with COO- (C-N: from 1394 to 1402 cm-1), a new peak at 1025 cm-1 proved COS can be successful cross-linked (Zn-WPH-COS). Fluorescence spectra showed zinc and COS reduced WPH hydrophobicity (28.0 and 39.0%, respectively). Circular dichroism showed zinc decreased WPH α-helix (from 13.7 to 11.5%), in contrast with COS to Zn-WPH. Zinc solubility and dialyzability were increased (64.5/ 54.2% vs 50.2/ 41.2% vs 29.5/ 21.7%) in Zn-WPH-COS, compared with Zn-WPH and ZnSO4·7H2O, respectively, due to the smallest size (167 nm) and COS protection on Zn-WPH (gastric digestion). These results indicate Zn-WPH-COS could significantly improve the digestion and absorption of zinc.

Kale is a functional food with anti-cancer, antioxidant, and anemia prevention properties. The harmful effects of the emerging pollutant microplastic (MP) on plants have been widely studied, but there is limited research how to mitigate MP damage on plants. Numerous studies have shown that Se is involved in regulating plant resistance to abiotic stresses. The paper investigated impact of MP and Se on kale growth, photosynthesis, reactive oxygen species (ROS) metabolism, phytochemicals, and endogenous hormones. Results revealed that MP triggered a ROS burst, which led to breakdown of antioxidant system in kale, and had significant toxic effects on photosynthetic system, biomass, and accumulation of secondary metabolites, as well as a significant decrease in IAA and a significant increase in GA. Under MP supply, Se mitigated the adverse effects of MP on kale by increasing photosynthetic pigment content, stimulating function of antioxidant system, enhancing secondary metabolite synthesis, and modulating hormonal networks.

Microplastic (MP), as a new pollutant, not only affects the growth and development of plants but also may affect the secondary metabolites of plants. The anti-tumor role of Pinellia ternata is related to secondary metabolites. The role of brassinolide (BR) in regulating plant resistance is currently one of the research hotspots. The paper mainly explores the regulation of BR on growth and physiology of Pinellia ternata under MP stress. The experimental design includes two levels of MP (0, 1%) and two levels of BR (0, 0.1 mg/L). MP led to a marked reduction in plant height (15.0%), Fv/Fm (3.2%), SOD and APX activity (15.0%, 5.1%), whereas induced an evident raise in the rate of O2·- production (29.6%) and GSH content (4.4%), as well as flavonoids (6.8%), alkaloids (75%), and ß-sitosterol (26.5%) contents. Under MP addition, BR supply significantly increased plant height (15.7%), aboveground and underground biomass (16.1%, 10.3%), carotenoid and GSH content (11.8%, 4.2%), Fv/Fm (2.9%), and activities of SOD, GR, and MDHAR (32.2%, 21.08%, 20.9%). These results indicate that MP suppresses the growth of P. ternata, although it promotes secondary metabolism. BR can alleviate the inhibitory effect of MP on growth by improving photosynthesis, redox homeostasis, and the AsA-GSH cycle.

Background: Nurses in emergency departments are at a high risk of experiencing secondary traumatic stress because of their frequent exposure to trauma patients and high-stress environments.Objective: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to determine the overall prevalence of secondary traumatic stress among emergency nurses and to identify the contributing factors.Method: We conducted a systematic search for cross-sectional studies in databases such as PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, CINAHL, Wanfang Database, and China National Knowledge Internet up to October 21, 2023. The Joanna Briggs Institute's appraisal checklists for prevalence and analytical cross-sectional studies were used for quality assessment. Heterogeneity among studies was assessed using Cochrane's Q test and the I2 statistic. A random effects model was applied to estimate the pooled prevalence of secondary traumatic stress, and subgroup analyses were performed to explore sources of heterogeneity. Descriptive analysis summarized the associated factors.Results: Out of 345 articles retrieved, 14 met the inclusion criteria, with 11 reporting secondary traumatic stress prevalence. The pooled prevalence of secondary traumatic stress among emergency nurses was 65% (95% CI: 58%-73%). Subgroup analyses indicated the highest prevalence in Asia (74%, 95% CI: 72%-77%), followed by North America (59%, 95% CI: 49%-72%) and Europe (53%, 95% CI: 29%-95%). Nine studies identified associated factors, including personal, work-related, and social factors. In the subgroup of divided by recruitment period, emergency department nurses in the COVID-19 outbreak period had a higher prevalence of secondary traumatic stress (70%, 95% CI: 62%-78%).Conclusions: Secondary traumatic stress prevalence is notably high among emergency department nurses, with significant regional variations and period differences. The factors affecting secondary traumatic stress also varied across studies. Future research should focus on improving research designs and sample sizes to pinpoint risk factors and develop prevention strategies.Registration: PROSPERO CRD42022301167.

Emergency department nurses, in particular, face a greater risk of secondary traumatic stress compared to other professions.While various studies have investigated the prevalence of secondary traumatic stress among these nurses, findings have been inconsistent.The pooled prevalence of secondary traumatic stress among emergency nurses is 65%. Subgroup analysis by region shows that Asia experiences the highest combined prevalence at 74%, with North America at 59% and Europe at 53%. Emergency department nurses in the COVID-19 outbreak period had a higher prevalence of secondary traumatic stress (70%, 95% CI: 62%­78%).

In this study, a revised CMAQ model incorporating source and temporal apportioning functions has been used to analyze the aging characteristics of SOA in East Asia. The results show that in the aerosol phase, the fraction of the non-volatile components typically fluctuates around 75 %-95 %, and aromatic hydrocarbon precursors contribute significantly to SOA, accounting for 45.6 %-72.7 % in winter and 29.1 %-52.7 % in summer. Transport due to meteorological conditions does not affect the SOA volatility profile in the cities, while regional source composition has been found to be important for the characterization of the properties of SOA in cities. When the SOA regional composition type is a multi-region-imported-dominated type (MRT), its age composition type tends to be an old-age-SOA-dominated type (OAT) (>48 h). Additionally, transport also causes fluctuations in the range of hourly SOA with atmospheric age of 96 h or higher. The SOAs normally transport through seasonal monsoon and could migrate longer in winter (700-1500 km in January) than in other seasons (250-900 km in April; 500-1200 km in July; 300-1000 km in October). Additionally, in winter, non-volatile SOA generally has a longer transport distance (700-1600 km) than semi- and low-volatile SOA (300-1300 km and 600-1500 km). Furthermore, during the transport process, geographical barriers have negligible impact on SOA in the 48+ hour age group.

Introduction: Clonal integration of connected ramets within clones is an important ecological advantage. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that the effects of clonal integration on performance of donor and recipient ramets when one resource is heterogeneous can be influenced by the availability of another resource of donor ramets. Methods: We conducted a greenhouse experiment on the widespread, perennial herb Glechoma longituba. Clonal fragments consisting of pairs of connected ramets were grown for seven weeks. The younger, apical ramets were exposed under 30% or 100% light condition and the older, basal ramets were treated with three levels of nutrients. The connections between ramets were either severed or left intact. 30% light condition negatively affected the growth of apical ramets, basal ramets and the whole fragments. Results: Clonal integration significantly increased the growth of apical ramets, but decreased the growth of the basal ramets. Medium and high level nutrient availability of basal ramets significantly increased the growth of apical ramets, basal ramets and the whole fragments. At the high nutrient level, the reduction in growth of basal ramets from clonal integration was decreased, but the growth responses of apical ramets and the whole fragments to clonal integration were not influenced by nutrient availability. Conclusion: The results suggested that clonal integration was benefit to the growth of apical ramets of Glechoma longituba but at the cost of reducing the growth of basal ramets. Although the high nutrient level could reduce the cost that clonal integration brought to the unshaded basal ramets, but could not increase the benefit that clonal integration brought to the shaded apical ramets and whole fragment.

Two novel Gram-stain-negative, aerobic and rod-shaped bacterial strains, designated DHG64T and 4D114T, were isolated from forest soil of Dinghushan Biosphere Reserve, Guangdong Province, PR China. DHG64T grew at 12-37 °C (optimum 33 °C), pH 4.5-10.0 (optimum 6.5-7.5) and in the presence of 0-2.0 % NaCl (w/v); while 4D114T grew at 12-37 °C (optimum 20-33 °C), pH 4.0-7.0 (optimum 4.5-6.0) and in the presence of 0-1.0 % NaCl (w/v). DHG64T and 4D114T showed 97.1-98.0 and 97.5-98.4 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities with seven species of the genus Trinickia with validly published names, respectively. In the phylogenetic trees based on 16S rRNA gene and genome sequences, both strains formed a clade with the members of genus Trinickia but well separated from each other. The average nucleotide identity and digital DNA-DNA hybridisation values for the novel strains to all species of the genus Trinickia with validly published names were in the ranges of 80.6-85.0 and 22.4-28.0 %, respectively. DHG64T contained C16 : 0, C17 : 0 cyclo and C19 : 0 cyclo ω8c, while 4D114T had C16 : 0, C17 : 0 cyclo, C19 : 0 cyclo ω8c and summed feature 2 (iso-C16 : 1 I and/or C14 : 0 3-OH) as the major cellular fatty acids. The major polar lipids for strains DHG64T and 4D114T were phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol and diphosphatidylglycerol. The DNA G+C contents of DHG64T and 4D114T were 63.0 and 62.8 mol%, respectively. Genomic analyses indicated that DHG64T and 4D114T may have potential for various applications, such as developing drugs against certain health problems and restoring environments polluted with metal ions and/or benzoate. On the basis of the results of morphological, physiological, biochemical and phylogenetic analyses, strains DHG64T and 4D114T were classified as representing two novel species of the genus Trinickia, for which the names Trinickia mobilis sp. nov. (type strain DHG64T = KACC 21223T = GDMCC 1.1282T) and Trinickia acidisoli sp. nov. (type strain 4D114T = KCTC 82876T = GDMCC 1.2131T) are proposed.

Three Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, motile and rod-shaped bacterial strains, 7Q-K02T, DHF22T and DHOM02T, were isolated from forest soil sampled at Dinghushan Biosphere Reserve, Guangdong Province, China. Strains 7Q-K02T, DHF22T and DHOM02T grew at 4-37, 4-42 and 12-37 °C, pH 3.0-8.5, 3.5-8.5 and 5.0-8.0, and in the presence of 0-3.0, 0-3.5 and 0-2.5 % (w/v) NaCl; with optima at 28-33, 28 and 28-33 °C, pH 3.5-6.5, 4.0-5.5 and 6.5-7.0, and 0-1.5, 0-1.5 and 0.5-1.5 % (w/v) NaCl, respectively. Strains 7Q-K02T and DHF22T have the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities of 99.0 and 98.0 % to Paraburkholderia sacchari LMG 19450T and 97.7 % between themselves, while strain DHOM02T shares the highest similarity of 98.4 % to 'Burkholderia rinojensis' A396T followed by 98.3 % to Burkholderia plantarii ATCC 43733T. In the 16S rRNA gene sequence phylogram, strain 7Q-K02T formed a sister branch with Paraburkholderia sacchari, Paraburkholderia oxyphila and Paraburkholderia paradisi, and strain DHF22T was separated from all other species within the genus Paraburkholderia, while strain DHOM02T formed a separated clade with members of the genus Burkholderia. The DNA G+C contents of strains 7Q-K02T, DHF22T and DHOM02T wwe 64.3, 65.4 and 66.6 %, respectively. Digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH) and average nucleotide identity (ANI) values of strains 7Q-K02T, DHF22T and closely related Paraburkholderia strains were in the ranges of 25.5-43.7 % and 81.5-91.3 %, respectively. While dDDH and ANI values between strain DHOM02T and Burkholderia strains with genome sequence data were in the ranges of 22.4-31.0 % and 78.2-86.1 %, respectively. These three strains have the same major respiratory quinone: ubiquinone-8. Strains 7Q-K02T, DHF22T and DHOM02T have C16 : 0, C17 : 0 cyclo, C19 : 0 cyclo ω8c and summed feature 8 (C18 : 1 ω7c/C18 : 1 ω6c) as their major fatty acid compositions. The major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol and diphosphatidylglycerol. On the basis of phenotypic, phylogenetic, genomic analyses and chemotaxonomic data, strains 7Q-K02T and DHF22T represent two novel species of the genus Paraburkholderia, for which the names Paraburkholderia acidiphila sp. nov. (type strain 7Q-K02T=CGMCC 1.15433T=KCTC 62472T=LMG 29209T) and Paraburkholderia acidisoli sp. nov. (type strain DHF22T=GDMCC 1.1448T=LMG 30262T) are proposed, while strain DHOM02T represents a novel species in the genus Burkholderia, for which the name Burkholderia guangdongensis sp. nov. (type strain DHOM02T=KCTC 42625T=LMG 28843T) is proposed. We also propose to transfer Burkholderia ultramafica to the genus Paraburkholderia as Paraburkholderia ultramafica comb. nov. based mainly on the results of phylogenomic analysis.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of simulated soccer on the hamstrings eccentric torque-angle profile and angle of peak torque (APTeccH), and on the hamstrings:quadriceps torque ratio at specific joint angles (ASHecc:Qcon). METHODS: The authors assessed dominant-limb isokinetic concentric and eccentric knee flexion and concentric knee extension at 120°/s in 9 semiprofessional male soccer players immediately before and after they completed the Loughborough Intermittent Shuttle Test (LIST). RESULTS: The LIST resulted in significant decreases in eccentric hamstrings torque at 60°, 50°, and 10° and a significant (21.8%) decrease in ASHecc:Qcon at 10° (P < .05). APTeccH increased from 7.1° ± 1.0° to 18.8° ± 4.2° (P < .05). Eccentric hamstrings peak torque significantly declined from 185.1 ± 70.4 N·m pre-LIST to 150.9 ± 58.5 N·m post-LIST (P = .002), but there were no significant changes in hamstrings or quadriceps concentric peak torque (P = .312, .169, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Simulated soccer results in a selective loss of eccentric hamstrings torque and hamstrings-to-quadriceps muscle balance at an extended joint position and a shift in the eccentric hamstrings APT to a shorter length, changes that could increase vulnerability to hamstrings injury. These findings suggest that injury-risk screening could be improved by evaluating the eccentric hamstrings torque-angle profile and hamstrings strength-endurance and that the development of hamstrings fatigue resistance and long-length eccentric strength may reduce injury incidence.
