RESUMEN

Artificial intelligence (AI) edge devices prefer employing high-capacity nonvolatile compute-in-memory (CIM) to achieve high energy efficiency and rapid wakeup-to-response with sufficient accuracy. Most previous works are based on either memristor-based CIMs, which suffer from accuracy loss and do not support training as a result of limited endurance, or digital static random-access memory (SRAM)-based CIMs, which suffer from large area requirements and volatile storage. We report an AI edge processor that uses a memristor-SRAM CIM-fusion scheme to simultaneously exploit the high accuracy of the digital SRAM CIM and the high energy-efficiency and storage density of the resistive random-access memory memristor CIM. This also enables adaptive local training to accommodate personalized characterization and user environment. The fusion processor achieved high CIM capacity, short wakeup-to-response latency (392 microseconds), high peak energy efficiency (77.64 teraoperations per second per watt), and robust accuracy (<0.5% accuracy loss). This work demonstrates that memristor technology has moved beyond in-lab development stages and now has manufacturability for AI edge processors.

This study aims to investigate the effect of Xixin Decoction on the T helper 17 cell(Th17)/regulatory T cell(Treg) ba-lance of intestinal mucosa and the expression of related transcription factors in the senescence-accelerated mouse-prone 8(SAMP8) model. Fifty 14-week male mice of SAMP8 were randomized by the random number table method into model group, probiotics group, and high-, medium-, and low-dose Xixin Decoction groups, with 10 mice in each group. Ten 14-week male mice of senescence-acce-lerated mouse-resistant 1(SAMR1) served as control group. After 10 weeks of feeding, the mice were administrated with correspon-ding drugs for 10 weeks. Morris water maze test was carried out to examine the learning and memory abilities of mice. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA) was employed to determine the content of secretory immunoglobulin A(SIgA) in the intestinal mucosa, and flow cytometry to detect the percentage content of Th17 and Treg in the intestinal mucosa. Western blot was performed to determine the protein levels of retinoid-related orphan receptor gamma t(RORγt) and forkhead box p3(Foxp3) in the mouse colon tissue. Compared with control group, the escape latency of mice in model group was significantly prolonged(P<0.01), and the number of times of crossing the platform and the residence time in the target quadrant were significantly reduced within 60 s(P<0.01), intestinal mucosal SIgA content was significantly decreased(P<0.01), Th17 content was increased(P<0.05), Treg content was decreased(P<0.01), the expression of RORγt protein was increased and Foxp3 protein was decreased in colon(P<0.01). Compared with the model group, high-dose Xixin Decoction group improved the learning and memory ability(P<0.05 or P<0.01). Probiotics group and high-and medium-dose Xixin Decoction group increased the content of SIgA in intestinal mucosa(P<0.05 or P<0.01), decreased percentage content of Th17 and increased the percentage content of Treg in intestinal mucosa(P<0.05 or P<0.01). Furthermore, they down-regulated the protein level of RORγt and up-regulated the protein level of Foxp3 in the intestinal mucosa(P<0.01). In conclusion, Xixin Decoction may act on intestinal mucosal immune barrier, affect gut-brain information exchange, and improve the learning and memory ability of SAMP8 by promoting SIgA secretion and regulating the Th17/Treg balance and the expression of RORγt and Foxp3.

Many powerful methods have been employed to elucidate the global transcriptomic, proteomic, or metabolic responses to pathogen-infected host cells. However, the host glycome responses to bacterial infection remain largely unexplored, and hence, our understanding of the molecular mechanisms by which bacterial pathogens manipulate the host glycome to favor infection remains incomplete. Here, we address this gap by performing a systematic analysis of the host glycome during infection by the bacterial pathogen Brucella spp. that cause brucellosis. We discover, surprisingly, that a Brucella effector protein (EP) Rhg1 induces global reprogramming of the host cell N-glycome by interacting with components of the oligosaccharide transferase complex that controls N-linked protein glycosylation, and Rhg1 regulates Brucella replication and tissue colonization in a mouse model of brucellosis, demonstrating that Brucella exploits the EP Rhg1 to reprogram the host N-glycome and promote bacterial intracellular parasitism, thereby providing a paradigm for bacterial control of host cell infection.

OBJECTIVE: Infection with helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is associated with depression, and depression can affect the outcome of H. pylori treatment. This study aimed to evaluate the value of serum brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) for predicting depression in H. pylori-positive patients. METHOD: A total of 82H. pylori-positive and 82H. pylori-negative patients were recruited for this study. All patients underwent neuropsychological and gastrointestinal assessments and blood sampling. BDNF and GFAP levels were measured in serum. The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) model was used to determine a composite marker. RESULTS: H. pylori-positive patients showed significantly increased serum GFAP levels and significantly decreased serum BDNF levels compared to H. pylori-negative patients. Among H. pylori-positive patients, serum levels of gastrin 17 (G-17), pepsinogen (PG) I/PGII, BDNF, and GFAP, as well as Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale (GSRS) scores, were significantly correlated with Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD-24) overall scores and factor scores. Interactions between serum BDNF/GFAP and gastrointestinal serum indices or GSRS scores were significantly associated with HAMD-24 scores in H. pylori-positive patients. The LASSO model indicated that the combination of serum BDNF, GFAP, and G-17 and GSRS scores could identify H. pylori-positive patients with depression with an area under the curve of 0.879. CONCLUSION: Circulating changes in BDNF and GFAP were associated with the occurrence of depression in H. pylori-positive patients. A composite marker including neural and gastrointestinal function-related indices may be of value for identifying depression among H. pylori-positive patients.

The meticulous design of active sites and light absorbers holds the key to the development of high-performance photothermal catalysts for CO2 hydrogenation. Here, we report a nonmetallic plasmonic catalyst of Mo2N/MoO2-x nanosheets by integrating a localized surface plasmon resonance effect with two distinct types of active sites for CO2 hydrogenation. Leveraging the synergism of dual active sites, H2 and CO2 molecules can be simultaneously adsorbed and activated on N atom and O vacancy, respectively. Meanwhile, the plasmonic effect of this noble-metal-free catalyst signifies its promising ability to convert photon energy into localized heat. Consequently, Mo2N/MoO2-x nanosheets exhibit remarkable photothermal catalytic performance in reverse water-gas shift reaction. Under continuous full-spectrum light irradiation (3 W·cm-2) for a duration of 168 h, the nanosheets achieve a CO yield rate of 355 mmol·gcat-1·h-1 in a flow reactor with a selectivity exceeding 99%. This work offers valuable insights into the precise design of noble-metal-free active sites and the development of plasmonic catalysts for reducing carbon footprints.

OBJECTIVE: To tackle non-specific low back pain (NSLBP) among patients and find the most effective solution and to quantitatively synthesize the overall effect of motor control training (MCT) compared with Pilates, McKenzie method, and physical therapy (PT) in pain and physical function. METHODS: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of four types of intervention (MCT, Pilates, McKenzie method, and PT) for LBP were collected by searching PubMed, Web of Science, EBSCOhost (Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials), and Scopus databases from the establishment of the database to September 30, 2023. The risk of bias was evaluated for included studies using the Revised Cochrane Risk of Bias tool for randomized trials (RoB 2.0). Taking pain and physical function in the experimental and control groups as outcome indicators, subgroup analysis was performed according to the intervention method to calculate the standardized mean difference (SMD) and 95% confidence interval (CI). RESULTS: A total of 25 RCTs, including 1253 patients, were included. Meta-analysis showed that MCT effectively relieved pain [SMD = -0.65, 95% CI (- 1.00, - 0.29), p < 0.01] and improved physical function [SMD = -0.76, 95% CI (- 1.22, - 0.31), p < 0.01] comparing with other 3 types of intervention. Subgroup analysis suggested that MCT could alleviate pain [SMD = -0.92, 95% CI (- 1.34, - 0.50), p < 0.01] and improve physical function [SMD = -1.15, 95% CI (- 1.72, - 0.57), p < 0.01] compared with PT, but it had no statistical significance compared with Pilates [pain: SMD = 0.13, 95% CI (- 0.56, 0.83), p = 0.71; physical function: SMD = 0.10, 95% CI (- 0.72, 0.91), p = 0.81] and the McKenzie method [pain: SMD = -0.03, 95% CI (- 0.75, 0.68), p = 0.93; physical function: SMD = -0.03, 95% CI (- 1.00, 0.94), p = 0.95]. CONCLUSIONS: MCT can effectively relieve pain and improve physical function in patients with NSLBP. It is more effective compared with PT for LBP, while no differences were detected between MCT and Pilates, as well as McKenzie method. Therefore, MCT, Pilates, and the McKenzie method should be encouraged as exercise interventions for NSLBP rehabilitation.

Keratin 80 (KRT80) is a filament protein that participates in cell differentiation and the integrity of the epithelial barrier. Here, KRT80 expression was higher in gastric cancer compared with normal mucosa at both mRNA and protein levels by bioinformatic analysis, qRT-PCR and Western blot (p<0.05), however, the methylation of KRT80 was lower than in normal mucosa (p<0.05). There was a negative relationship between promoter methylation and expression level of KRT80 gene in gastric cancer (p<0.05). KRT80 mRNA and protein expression was positively correlated with the differentiation of gastric cancer (p<0.05), while KRT80 methylation was negatively associated with gastric cancer differentiation and p53 mutation (p<0.05). The expression of KRT80 mRNA was positively linked to the short survival time of gastric cancers (p<0.05). The differential genes of KRT80 mRNA were involved in ligand-receptor interaction, estrogen signal pathway, peptidase, filament and cytoskeleton, keratinocyte differentiation, vitamin D receptor, muscle contraction, and B cell-mediated immunity (p<0.05). KRT80-related genes were classified into cell adhesion and junction, cadherin binding, skin and epidermis development, and so forth (p<0.05). KRT80 knockdown suppressed proliferation, anti-apoptosis, anti-pyroptosis, migration, invasion and epithelial-mesenchymal transition in gastric cancer cells (p<0.05). These findings indicated that up-regulated expression of KRT80 played a crucial part in gastric carcinogenesis, and might be considered as a biological marker for aggressive behaviors and poor prognosis. Its silencing might be used as an approach of target therapy for gastric cancer patients.

This study aimed to explore the possible effect of Xixin Decoction(XXD) on the learning and memory ability of Alzheimer's disease(AD) model senescence-accelerated mouse-prone 8(SAMP8) and the related mechanism in enhancing neuroprotective effect and reducing neuroinflammation. Forty SAMP8 were randomly divided into a model group(10 mL·kg~(-1)·d~(-1)), a probiotics group(0.39 g·kg~(-1)·d~(-1)), a high-dose group of XXD granules(H-XXD, 5.07 g·kg~(-1)·d~(-1)), a medium-dose group of XXD granules(M-XXD, 2.535 g·kg~(-1)·d~(-1)), and a low-dose group of XXD granules(L-XXD, 1.267 5 g·kg~(-1)·d~(-1)). Eight senescence-accelerated mouse-resistant 1(SAMR1) of the same age and strain were assigned to the control group(10 mL·kg~(-1)·d~(-1)). After ten weeks of intragastric administration, the Morris water maze was used to test the changes in spatial learning and memory ability of mice after treatment. Meanwhile, immunofluorescence staining was used to detect the positive expression of receptor for advanced glycation end products(AGER), Toll-like receptor 1(TLR1), and Toll-like receptor 2(TLR2) in the hippocampal CA1 region of mice. Western blot was employed to test the protein expression levels of silencing information regulator 2 related enzyme 1(SIRT1), AGER, TLR1, and TLR2 in the hippocampus of mice. Enzyme linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA) was applied to assess the levels of Aß_(1-42) in the hippocampus of mice and the levels of nuclear factor κB p65(NF-κB p65), NOD-like receptor protein 3(NLRP3), tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α), and interleukin-1ß(IL-1ß) in the serum and hippocampus of mice. Compared with the model group, XXD significantly improved the spatial learning and memory ability of SAMP8, increased the expression of neuroprotective factors in the hippocampus, decreased the levels of neuroinflammatory factors, and inhibited the expression of Aß_(1-42). In particular, H-XXD significantly increased the expression of SIRT1 in the hippocampus of mice, reduced the expression levels of NF-κB p65, NLRP3, TNF-α, and IL-1ß in the serum and hippocampus of mice, and decreased the expression of AGER, TLR1, and TLR2 in the hippocampus of mice(P<0.05 or P<0.01). XXD may improve the spatial learning and memory ability of AD model SAMP8 by enhancing the neuroprotective effect and inhibiting neuroinflammation.

Background: Previous studies have demonstrated the efficacy of bone wax in reducing blood loss in various orthopedic surgeries. However, the effect of bone wax on total hip arthroplasty (THA) remains unclear. The objective of this study was to assess the efficacy of bone wax in THA. Methods: We enrolled 104 patients in this randomized controlled trial. These patients were randomized (1:1) to either the bone wax or control group. The primary outcome was total blood loss after THA. The secondary outcomes included serum hemoglobin (Hb) level, change in Hb level, lower limb diameters on the first and third postoperative day (POD), range of motion at discharge, length of postoperative hospital stay, and adverse events. Results: Patients in the bone wax group had significantly lower total blood loss on PODs 1 and 3 (p < 0.05). Moreover, patients in the bone wax group performed better in terms of postoperative serum Hb level, change in Hb level on PODs 1 and 3, and length of postoperative hospital stay (all p < 0.05). Patients in the bone wax group did not experience any bone wax-related adverse events. Conclusion: Bone wax administration in THA significantly reduced perioperative blood loss. Therefore, bone wax is promising for optimizing blood-conserving management protocols in THA. Clinical trial registration: [https://clinicaltrials.gov/], identifier [ChiCTR2100043868].

Background: Cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) is a cluster of microvascular disorders with unclear pathological mechanisms. The microbiota-gut-brain axis is an essential regulatory mechanism between gut microbes and their host. Therefore, the compositional and functional gut microbiota alterations lead to cerebrovascular disease pathogenesis. The current study aims to determine the alteration and clinical value of the gut microbiota in CSVD patients. Methods: Sixty-four CSVD patients and 18 matched healthy controls (HCs) were included in our study. All the participants underwent neuropsychological tests, and the multi-modal magnetic resonance imaging depicted the changes in brain structure and function. Plasma samples were collected, and the fecal samples were analyzed with 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Results: Based on the alpha diversity analysis, the CSVD group had significantly decreased Shannon and enhanced Simpson compared to the HC group. At the genus level, there was a significant increase in the relative abundances of Parasutterella, Anaeroglobus, Megasphaera, Akkermansia, Collinsella, and Veillonella in the CSVD group. Moreover, these genera with significant differences in CSVD patients revealed significant correlations with cognitive assessments, plasma levels of the blood-brain barrier-/inflammation-related indexes, and structural/functional magnetic resonance imaging changes. Functional prediction demonstrated that lipoic acid metabolism was significantly higher in CSVD patients than HCs. Additionally, a composite biomarker depending on six gut microbiota at the genus level displayed an area under the curve of 0.834 to distinguish CSVD patients from HCs using the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) algorithm. Conclusion: The evident changes in gut microbiota composition in CSVD patients were correlated with clinical features and pathological changes of CSVD. Combining these gut microbiota using the LASSO algorithm helped identify CSVD accurately.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence has increased among patients aged <50 years. Exploring high-risk factors and screening high-risk populations may help lower early-onset CRC (EO-CRC) incidence. We developed noninvasive predictive models for EO-CRC and investigated its risk factors. METHODS: This retrospective multicenter study collected information on 1756 patients (811 patients with EO-CRC and 945 healthy controls) from two medical centers in China. Sociodemographic features, clinical symptoms, medical and family history, lifestyle, and dietary factors were measured. Patients from one cohort were randomly assigned (8:2) to two groups for model establishment and internal validation, and another independent cohort was used for external validation. Multivariable logistic regression, random forest, and eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) were performed to establish noninvasive predictive models for EO-CRC. Some variables in the model influenced EO-CRC occurrence and were further analyzed. Multivariable logistic regression analysis yielded adjusted odd ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS: All three models showed good performance, with areas under the receiver operator characteristic curves (AUCs) of 0.82, 0.84, and 0.82 in the internal and 0.78, 0.79, and 0.78 in the external validation cohorts, respectively. Consumption of sweet (OR 2.70, 95% CI 1.89-3.86, P < 0.001) and fried (OR 2.16, 95% CI 1.29-3.62, P < 0.001) foods ≥3 times per week was significantly associated with EO-CRC occurrence. CONCLUSION: We established noninvasive predictive models for EO-CRC and identified multiple nongenetic risk factors, especially sweet and fried foods. The model has good performance and can help predict the occurrence of EO-CRC in the Chinese population.

Photocatalytic reduction of CO2 to value-added solar fuels is of great significance to alleviate the severe environmental and energy crisis. Herein, we report the construction of a synergistic silver nanoparticle catalyst with adjacent atomic cobalt-silver dual-metal sites on P-doped carbon nitride (Co1Ag(1+n)-PCN) for photocatalytic CO2 reduction. The optimized photocatalyst achieves a high CO formation rate of 46.82 µmol gcat-1 with 70.1% selectivity in solid-liquid mode without sacrificial agents, which is 2.68 and 2.18-fold compared to that of exclusive silver single-atom (Ag1-CN) and cobalt-silver dual-metal site (Co1Ag1-PCN) photocatalysts, respectively. The closely integrated in situ experiments and density functional theory calculations unravel that the electronic metal-support interactions (EMSIs) of Ag nanoparticles with adjacent Ag-N2C2 and Co-N6-P single-atom sites promote the adsorption of CO2* and COOH* intermediates to form CO and CH4, as well as boost the enrichment and transfer of photoexcited electrons. Moreover, the atomically dispersed dual-metal Co-Ag SA sites serve as the fast-electron-transfer channel while Ag nanoparticles act as the electron acceptor to enrich and separate more photogenerated electrons. This work provides a general platform to delicately design high-performance synergistic catalysts for highly efficient solar energy conversion.

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies have indicated that neurotransmitters play important roles in the occurrence and development of gastric cancer. MAOA is an important catecholamine neurotransmitter-degrading enzyme involved in the degradation of norepinephrine, epinephrine and serotonin. To find a potential therapeutic target for the treatment of gastric cancer, the biological functions of MAOA and the underlying mechanism in gastric cancer need to be explored. METHODS: The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) datasets, Kaplan‒Meier (KM) plotter were used to identify the differentially expressed genes, which mainly involved the degradation and synthesis enzymes of neurotransmitters in gastric cancer. We also investigated the expression pattern of MAOA in human and mouse tissues and cell lines by immunohistochemistry and Western blotting analysis. Western blotting, quantitative real-time PCR, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and a Seahorse experiment were used to identify the molecular mechanism of cancer cell glycolysis. MAOA expression and patient survival were analysed in the Ren Ji cohort, and univariate and multivariate analyses were performed based on the clinicopathological characteristics of the above samples. RESULTS: MAOA expression was significantly downregulated in gastric cancer tissue and associated with poor patient prognosis. Moreover, the expression level of MAOA in gastric cancer tissue had a close negative correlation with the SUXmax value of PET-CT in patients. MAOA suppressed tumour growth and glycolysis and promoted cancer cell apoptosis. We also reported that MAOA can interact with NDRG1 and regulate glycolysis through suppression of the PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway. MAOA expression may serve as an independent prognostic factor in gastric cancer patients. CONCLUSIONS: MAOA attenuated glycolysis and inhibited the progression of gastric cancer through the PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway. Loss of function or downregulation of MAOA can facilitate gastric cancer progression. Overexpression of MAOA and inhibition of the PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway may provide a potential method for gastric cancer treatment in clinical therapeutic regimens.

RESUMEN

An easy to prepare nickel-coordinated mesoporous graphitic carbon nitride (Ni-mpg-CN) was introduced as a heterogeneous photocatalyst, which efficiently accelerated the photocatalytic C-N cross-coupling of (hetero)aryl bromides and aliphatic amines, delivering the desired monoaminated products in good yields. In addition, the concise synthesis of the pharmaceutical tetracaine was accomplished in the final stage, further highlighting the practical applicability.

Liquid-crystal-based Pancharatnam-Berry optical elements are widely used in virtual reality and augmented reality. However, the mismatch between exposure wavelength and operating wavelength leads to an undesirable phase deviation to the lenses, which in turn causes severe aberration especially when the f-number is small. To overcome the mismatched wavelength problem and to obtain a nearly ideal lens phase profile, a new exposure method using two template lenses with different focal lengths is proposed and experimentally validated. Our results indicate that such a lens indeed exhibits a better imaging performance than that fabricated by traditional interference method.

We propose an ultracompact virtual reality (VR) system with three optical components: a lenslet array, a Pancharatnam-Berry phase deflector (PBD), and a deflector array. The lenslet array aims to collect and collimate the input light from the display panel. The PBD steers the deviated beams after the lenslet array toward the optical axis so that the image uniformity and angular resolution can be enhanced, which plays a key role to enable this ultracompact design. Finally, the deflector array deflects the collimated beam from each lenslet to the exit pupil to widen the field of view. Such an ultracompact design is particularly attractive for next-generation glasses-like, lightweight VR headsets.

Esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC) and adenocarcinoma of the esophagogastric junction (EGJA) have long been associated with poor prognosis. With changes in the spectrum of the disease caused by economic development and demographic changes, the incidence of EAC and EGJA continues to increase, making them worthy of more attention from clinicians. For a long time, surgery has been the mainstay treatment for EAC and EGJA. With advanced techniques, endoscopic therapy, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and other treatment methods have been developed, providing additional treatment options for patients with EAC and EGJA. In recent decades, the emergence of multidisciplinary therapy (MDT) has enabled the comprehensive treatment of tumors and made the treatment more flexible and diversified, which is conducive to achieving standardized and individualized treatment of EAC and EGJA to obtain a better prognosis. This review discusses recent advances in EAC and EGJA treatment in the surgical-centered MDT mode in recent years.

The rapid development of the internet of things is accompanied by a large number of equipment deployment. When the equipment fails or reaches its service life, tons of e-waste will be generated. Therefore, there is an urgent need to find environmentally friendly and effective ways to recycle and treat e-waste. In this paper, a method of classification detection and resource utilization of waste electronic components based on the triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) is proposed, which provides a novel idea for electronic waste treatment. We studied the output voltage characteristics of different kinds of TENG based on waste electronic components subject to different environmental loadings. The output characteristics of TENG are explored, reflecting the e-waste categories and processing environment. TENG is also connected with hundreds of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) through rectifier bridge circuit, and the output performance of TENG is characterized by the number and intensity of LEDs.

Solar-driven transfer hydrogenation of unsaturated bonds has received considerable attention in the research area of sustainable organic synthesis; however, water, the ultimate green source of hydrogen, has rarely been investigated due to the high barrier associated with splitting of water molecules. We report a carbon-nitride-supported palladium single-atom heterogeneous catalyst with unparalleled performance in photocatalytic water-donating transfer hydrogenation compared to its nanoparticle counterparts. Isotopic-labeling experiments and operando nuclear magnetic resonance measurements confirm the direct hydrogenation mechanism using in situ-generated protons from water splitting under visible-light irradiation. Density functional theory calculations attribute the high activity to lower barriers for hydrogenation, facilitated desorption of ethylbenzene, and facile hydrogen replenishment from water on the atomic palladium sites.
