RESUMEN

This study is designed to evaluate the visual outcomes, accuracy, and predictability of corneal flaps with different thicknesses created by 60-kHz femtosecond laser according to different corneal thicknesses in the patients with low and moderate refractive error. A total of 182 eyes were divided according to the central corneal thickness (470 µm-499 µm in Group A, 500 µm-549 µm in Group B, and 550 µm-599 µm in Group C) and underwent femtosecond laser-assisted LASIK for a target corneal flap thickness (100 µm for Group A, 110 µm for Group B, and 120 µm for Group C). Uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), and refractive status were examined. The flap thickness of each eye was measured by anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) on 30 points at 1-month follow-up to assess the accuracy and predictability. Postoperatively, at least 75% of eyes had a UDVA of 20/16 or better, less than 2% of eyes lost one line, over 30% of eyes gained one or more lines in CDVA, at least 95% of eyes had astigmatism of less than 0.25 D, all eyes achieved a correction within ± 1.00 D from the target spherical equivalent refraction. The visual and refractive outcomes did not differ significantly in all groups (P >0.05). The mean flap thickness was 100.36 ± 4.32 µm (range: 95-113 µm) in Group A, 111.64 ± 3.62 µm (range: 108-125 µm) in Group B, and 122.32 ± 2.88 µm (range: 112-128 µm) in Group C. The difference at each measured point among the three groups was significant (P < 0.05). The accuracy and predictability were satisfactory in all three groups. In conclusion, this customized treatment yielded satisfactory clinical outcomes with accurate and predictable flap thickness for patients with low and moderate refractive error.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the therapeutic effect of phacoemulsification for primary closed-angle glaucoma complicated with cataract. METHODS: Phacoemulsification with posterior chamber foldable intraocular lens implantation was performed in 55 cases (58 eyes) of acute or chronic primary closed-angle glaucoma complicated with cataract. The changes of visual acuity, intraocular pressure, central anterior chamber depth and anterior chamber angle were observed after operation and the patients were followed up for 6 months. RESULTS: Compared with those before operation, the postoperative best corrected visual acuity and anterior chamber depth were improved, the intraocular pressure was reduced, and the closed chamber angle was partially reopened. CONCLUSION: Phacoemulsification with posterior chamber foldable intraocular lens implantation not only improves the visual acuity but also controls the intraocular pressure, and can be a valuable method for treating primary closed-angle glaucoma with cataract.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To study the accuracy of the intraocular pressure (IOP) after laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) with noncontact tonometer (NCT). METHODS: One hundred and eighty cases (256 eyes) myopias that had undergone LASIK were studied. IOP, corneal thickness and corneal curvature were measured before and after LASIK. The correlations were analyzed. RESULTS: The decrease of Iop using NCT was significantly obvious after LASIK (P < 0.001). One year after LASIK mean IOP drop was 6.54 +/- 2.1 mmHg. The reduction of IOP may be related to the decrease in corneal thickness and corneal curvature (P < 0.01). Regression equation for IOP drop (mmHg) = 0.355 + 0.0342X1 + 0.365X2 [X1 = decrease in corneal curvature (D), X2 = ablation depth (microm)] CONCLUSIONS: The IOP readings after LASIK were lower than the real IOP values. IOP readings after LASIK were influenced by corneal thickness and refraction degree.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To detect the characteristics of school-aged children with eye trauma for giving an appropriate way of treatment and prevention. METHODS: One hundred and six cases (107 eyes) of school-aged children with eye trauma treated in our hospital in the last 7 years were analyzed retrospectively. RESULTS: The main causes of trauma were playing plastic guns, firecracker and fireworks, scissors, or needle. Hyphema by ocular contusion or penetrating wound of cornea were often observed. The visual acuity of 44. 9% traumatic eyes was lower than 0.05 preoperatively and most of them (83.2%) recovered from blindness postoperatively. CONCLUSIONS: Eye trauma was severely harmful to school-aged children's eyes. Paying more attention to prevention and carrying out extensively popular education of eye protection were two important means to prevent children from injury.
