RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Digenetic trematodes, including blood flukes, intestinal flukes, liver flukes, lung flukes, and pancreatic flukes, are highly diverse and distributed widely. They affect at least 200 million people worldwide, so better understanding of their global distribution and prevalence are crucial for controlling and preventing human trematodiosis. Hence, this scoping review aims to conduct a comprehensive investigation on the spatio-temporal distribution and epidemiology of some important zoonotic digenetic trematodes. METHODS: We conducted a scoping review by searching PubMed, Web of Science, Google Scholar, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and Wanfang databases for articles, reviews, and case reports of zoonotic digenetic trematodes, without any restrictions on the year of publication. We followed the inclusion and exclusion criteria to identify relevant studies. And relevant information of the identified studies were collected and summarized. RESULTS: We identified a total of 470 articles that met the inclusion criteria and were included in the review finally. Our analysis revealed the prevalence and global distribution of species in Schistosoma, Echinostoma, Isthmiophora, Echinochasmus, Paragonimus, Opisthorchiidae, Fasciolidae, Heterophyidae, and Eurytrema. Although some flukes are distributed worldwide, developing countries in Asia and Africa are still the most prevalent areas. Furthermore, there were some overlaps between the distribution of zoonotic digenetic trematodes from the same genus, and the prevalence of some zoonotic digenetic trematodes was not entirely consistent with their global distribution. The temporal disparities in zoonotic digenetic trematodes may attribute to the environmental changes. The gaps in our knowledge of the epidemiology and control of zoonotic digenetic trematodes indicate the need for large cohort studies in most countries. CONCLUSIONS: This review provides important insights into the prevalence and global distribution of some zoonotic digenetic trematodes, firstly reveals spatio-temporal disparities in these digenetic trematodes. Countries with higher prevalence rate could be potential sources of transmitting diseases to other areas and are threat for possible outbreaks in the future. Therefore, continued global efforts to control and prevent human trematodiosis, and more international collaborations are necessary in the future.

Submerged zone in bioretention facilities for stormwater treatment has been approved to be an effective structure amendment to improve denitrification capability. However, the role and influence of water quality changes in the submerged zone under natural continuous random rainfall patterns are still not clear, especially when the rainfall is less than the pore water in the submerged zone. In this study, continuous rainfall events with different rainfall volume (light rain-light rain-heavy rain) were designed in a lab-scale woodchip mulched pyrite bioretention facility to test the effects of rainfall pattern. The results exhibited that light rain events significantly affected the pollutant removal performance of bioretention for the next rainfall. Different effects were observed during the long-term operation. In the 5th month, light rain reduced the ammonia removal efficiency of subsequent rainstorm events by 8.70%, while in the 12th month, when nitrate leakage occurred, light rain led to a 40.24% reduction in the next heavy rain event's nitrate removal efficiency. Additionally, light rain would also affect the concentration of by-products in the next rainfall. Following a light rain, the concentration of sulfate in the subsequent light rainfall can increase by 24.4 mg/L, and by 11.92 mg/L in a heavy rain. The water quality in the submerged zone and media characteristics analysis suggested that nitrogen conversion capacity of the substrate and microbes, such as Nitrospira (2.86%) and Thiobacillus (35.71%), as well as the in-situ accumulation of pollutants under light rain played important roles. This study clarifies the relationship between successive rainfall events and provides a more comprehensive understanding of bioretention facilities. This is beneficial for field study of bioretention facilities in the face of complex rainfall events.

Neonatal necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is the most common inflammatory intestinal disease in preterm infants, with a high incidence and mortality rate. The etiology and mechanisms of NEC are not yet fully understood, and multiple factors contribute to its occurrence and development. Recent studies have found that anemia is a risk factor for NEC in neonates, but the specific pathogenic mechanism remains unclear. This article reviews recent research on the relationship between anemia and NEC, providing a reference for further understanding the impact of anemia on intestinal injury and its association with NEC.

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia is characterized by progressive loss of muscle mass and function due to aging. DNA methylation has been identified to play important roles in the dysfunction of skeletal muscle. The aim of our present study was to explore the whole blood sample-based methylation changes of skeletal muscle function-related factors in patients with sarcopenia. METHODS: The overall DNA methylation levels were analysed by using MethlTarget™ DNA Methylation Analysis platform in a discovery set consistent of 50 sarcopenic older adults (aged ≥65 years) and 50 age- and sex-matched non-sarcopenic individuals. The candidate differentially methylated regions (DMRs) were further validated by Methylation-specific PCR (MSP) in another two independent larger sets and confirmed by pyrosequencing. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was used to determine the optimum cut-off levels of fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF2)_30 methylation best predicting sarcopenia and area under the ROC curve (AUC) was measured. The correlation between candidate DMRs and the risk of sarcopenia was investigated by univariate analysis and multivariate logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: Among 1149 cytosine-phosphate-guanine (CpG) sites of 27 skeletal muscle function-related secretary factors, 17 differentially methylated CpG sites and 7 differentially methylated regions (DMRs) were detected between patients with sarcopenia and control subjects in the discovery set. Further methylation-specific PCR identified that methylation of fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF2)_30 was lower in patients with sarcopenia and the level was decreased as the severity of sarcopenia increased, which was confirmed by pyrosequencing. Correlation analysis demonstrated that the methylation level of FGF2_30 was positively correlated to ASMI (r = 0.372, P < 0.001), grip strength (r = 0.334, P < 0.001), and gait speed (r = 0.411, P < 0.001). ROC curve analysis indicated that the optimal cut-off value of FGF2_30 methylation level that predicted sarcopenia was 0.15 with a sensitivity of 84.6% and a specificity of 70.1% (AUC = 0.807, 95% CI = 0.756-0.858, P < 0.001). Multivariate logistic regression analyses showed that lower FGF2_30 methylation level (<0.15) was significantly associated with increased risk of sarcopenia even after adjustment for potential confounders including age, sex, and BMI (adjusted OR = 9.223, 95% CI: 6.614-12.861, P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that lower FGF2_30 methylation is correlated with the risk and severity of sarcopenia in the older adults, indicating that FGF2 methylation serve as a surrogate biomarker for the screening and evaluation of sarcopenia.

Compost is widely used in agriculture as fertilizer while providing a practical option for solid municipal waste disposal. However, compost may also contain per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), potentially impacting soils and leading to PFAS entry into food chains and ultimately human exposure risks via dietary intake. This study examined how compost affects the bioavailability and uptake of eight PFAS (two ethers, three fluorotelomer sulfonates, and three perfluorosulfonates) by lettuce (Lactuca sativa) grown in commercial organic compost-amended, PFAS spiked soils. After 50 days of greenhouse experiment, PFAS uptake by lettuce decreased (by up to 90.5 %) with the increasing compost amendment ratios (0-20 %, w/w), consistent with their decreased porewater concentrations (by 30.7-86.3 %) in compost-amended soils. Decreased bioavailability of PFAS was evidenced by the increased in-situ soil-porewater distribution coefficients (Kd) (by factors of 1.5-7.0) with increasing compost additions. Significant negative (or positive) correlations (R2 ≥ 0.55) were observed between plant bioaccumulation (or Kd) and soil organic carbon content, suggesting that compost amendment inhibited plant uptake of PFAS mainly by increasing soil organic carbon and enhancing PFAS sorption. However, short-chain PFAS alternatives (e.g., perfluoro-2-methoxyacetic acid (PFMOAA)) were effectively translocated to shoots with translocation factors > 2.9, increasing their risks of contamination in leafy vegetables. Our findings underscore the necessity for comprehensive risk assessment of compost-borne PFAS when using commercial compost products in agricultural lands.

Medicago sativa, commonly known as alfalfa, is widely distributed worldwide, known for its strong stress resistance and well-developed root system, making it an important plant in ecological restoration research. To investigate the absorption and transport characteristics of alfalfa for typical perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) under salt stress, a 30-day indoor greenhouse experiment was conducted. The results showed that alfalfa exhibited varying degrees of absorption and transport for the selected PFAS. The highest BCF (Bioconcentration Factor) for shoot tissue reached 725.4 (for PFBA), and the highest TF (Translocation Factor) reached 53.8 (for PFPeA). Different PFAS compounds exhibited distinct bioaccumulation behaviors, with short-chain PFAS more readily entering the plant's root system and being transported upwards, while long-chain PFAS tended to adsorb to the surface of the root system. Furthermore, salt stress did not significantly affect the uptake of PFAS by alfalfa. This suggests that alfalfa is salt-tolerant and holds great potential for ecological restoration in short-chain PFAS-contaminated sites.

The widespread use of aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) for firefighting and firefighter training has led to extensive per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) contamination in the environment. Challenges remain in the analytical determination of PFASs via liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS), particularly when attempting to include ultrashort-chain perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) and longer-chain anionic and zwitterionic PFASs in a single direct injection. In this study, we assessed the performance of three analytical LC columns (C18, JJ, and Acclaim columns) to separate targeted and suspect PFASs in AFFF-impacted water samples collected from five sites. The C18 column failed to retain ultrashort-chain PFAAs while the JJ and Acclaim columns were not suitable for hydrophobic PFASs. Ultrashort-chain PFAAs were detected at three sites and comprised 1.6-18% of the total perfluoroalkyl carboxylic and sulfonic acids. Semi-quantified concentrations of suspect PFASs comprised 0.70-13% of the total PFASs. When attempting to capture the entirety of the PFAS mass in a water sample, the C18 column captured the broadest suite of suspect PFASs, while the JJ column quantified the most total PFAS mass. Results of this study highlight the importance and tradeoffs of LC column choice to comprehensively determine the composition of PFASs and their concentrations in AFFF-impacted water samples.

To investigate the strengthening effects and mechanisms of bioaugmentation on the microbial remediation of uranium-contaminated groundwater via bioreduction coupled to biomineralization, two exogenous microbial consortia with reducing and phosphate-solubilizing functions were screened and added to uranium-contaminated groundwater as the experimental groups (group B, reducing consortium added; group C, phosphate-solubilizing consortium added). ß-glycerophosphate (GP) was selected to stimulate the microbial community as the sole electron donor and phosphorus source. The results showed that bioaugmentation accelerated the consumption of GP and the proliferation of key functional microbes in groups B and C. In group B, Dysgonomonas, Clostridium_sensu_stricto_11 and Clostridium_sensu_stricto_13 were the main reducing bacteria, and Paenibacillus was the main phosphate-solubilizing bacteria. In group C, the microorganisms that solubilized phosphate were mainly unclassified_f_Enterobacteriaceae. Additionally, bioaugmentation promoted the formation of unattached precipitates and alleviated the inhibitory effect of cell surface precipitation on microbial metabolism. As a result, the formation rate of U-phosphate precipitates and the removal rates of aqueous U(VI) in both groups B and C were elevated significantly after bioaugmentation. The U(VI) removal rate was poor in the control group (group A, with only an indigenous consortium). Propionispora, Sporomusa and Clostridium_sensu_stricto_11 may have played an important role in the removal of uranium in group A. Furthermore, the addition of a reducing consortium promoted the reduction of U(VI) to U(IV), and immobilized uranium existed in the form of U(IV)-phosphate and U(VI)-phosphate precipitates in group B. In contrast, U was present mainly as U(VI)-phosphate precipitates in groups A and C. Overall, bioaugmentation with an exogenous consortium resulted in the rapid removal of uranium from groundwater and the formation of U-phosphate minerals and served as an effective strategy for improving the treatment of uranium-contaminated groundwater in situ.

Due to the molecular complexity of dissolving organic matter (DOM), the vertical molecular distribution of riparian soil DOM (especially dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) and dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP)) in different land use types and their relationship with the bacterial community is still unclear. This study analyzed the spectral characteristics of riparian soil DOM from 0 to 100 cm in wild grassland, agricultural land, and bare land. The molecular distribution of DOM was revealed through Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) and the specific relationship between DOM and bacterial community composition (BCC) was evaluated. The results showed that the DOM in the upper soil layer (0-40 cm) was mainly composed of recalcitrant macromolecular organics, while that in the lower layer (40-100 cm) was labile small molecular organics. In agricultural land, the total storage of DOM was lower than that in wild grassland, but with a higher abundance of recalcitrant organic carbon (lignin, etc.). At the same time, the bacterial community in agricultural land is shifting towards copiotrophs. In addition, the abundance of labile C degrading genes increases with nitrate as the main electron acceptor. However, sulfates are mainly used as electron acceptors in wild grasslands. Both DOP and DON were dominated by lignin and displayed higher chemical diversity in the upper soil. The bioavailability of DOP in three types of soil is higher than that of DON. DOM-BCC network analysis shows that the recalcitrant DON and DOP molecules in soil are positively correlated with phylum Actinobacteriota in agricultural land. These results emphasize that the DOM molecular characteristics were closely related to the function of the soil bacterial community.

Bioretention systems are one of the most widely used stormwater control measures for urban runoff treatment. However, stable and effective dissolved nutrient treatment by bioretention systems is often challenged by complicated stormwater conditions. In this study, pyrite-only (PO), pyrite-biochar (PB), pyrite-woodchip (PW), and pyrite-woodchip-biochar mixed (M) bioretention systems were established to study the feasibility of improving both stability and efficiency in bioretention system via multi-media interaction. PB, PW, and M all showed enhanced dissolved nitrogen and/or phosphorus removal compared to PO, with M demonstrating the highest efficiency and stability under different antecedent drying durations (ADD), pollutant levels, and prolonged precipitation depth. The total dissolved nitrogen and dissolved phosphorus removal in M ranged between 64%-86% and 80%-95%, respectively, with limited organic matter and iron leaching. Pore water, microbial community, and material analysis collectively indicate that pyrite, woodchip, and biochar synergistically facilitated multiple nutrient treatment processes and protected each other against by-product leaching. Pyrite-woodchip interaction greatly increased nitrate removal by facilitating mixotrophic denitrification, while biochar further enhanced ammonium adsorption and expanded the denitrification area. The Fe3+ generated by pyrite aerobic oxidation was adsorbed on the biochar surface and potentially formed a Fe-biochar composite layer, which not only reduced Fe3+-induced pyrite excessive oxidation but also potentially increased organic matter adsorption. Fe (oxyhydr)oxides intermediate product formed by pyrite oxidation, in return, controlled the phosphorus and organic matter leaching from biochar and woodchip. Overall, this study demonstrates that multi-media interaction may enable bioretention systems to achieve stable and effective urban runoff treatment.

Galectin 3 (Gal-3) is one of the major elements for activating microglia and mediating neuroinflammation in some types of neurodegenerative diseases. However, its role in the pathogenesis of prion disease is seldom addressed. In this study, markedly increased brain Gal-3 was identified in three scrapie-infected rodent models at the terminal stage. The increased Gal-3 was mainly colocalized with the activated microglia. Coincidental with the increased brain Gal-3 in prion-infected animals, the expression of brain trigger receptor expressed in myeloid cell 2 (TREM2), one of the Gal-3 receptors, and some components in the downstream pathway also significantly increased, whereas Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), another Gal-3 receptor, and the main components in its downstream signaling were less changed. The increased Gal-3 signals were distributed at the areas with PrPSc deposit but looked not to colocalize directly with PrPSc/PrP signals. Similar changing profiles of Gal-3, the receptors TREM2 and TLR4, as well as the proteins in the downstream pathways were also observed in prion-infected cell line SMB-S15. Removal of PrPSc replication in SMB-S15 cells reversed the upregulation of cellular Gal-3, TREM2, and the relevant proteins. Moreover, we presented data for interactions of Gal-3 with TREM2 and with TLR4 morphologically and molecularly in the cultured cells. Stimulation of prion-infected cells or their normal partner cells with recombinant mouse Gal-3 in vitro induced obvious responses for activation of TREM2 signaling and TLR4 signaling. Our data here strongly indicate that prion infection or PrPSc deposit induces remarkably upregulated brain Gal-3, which is actively involved in the microglia activation and neuroinflammation mainly via TREM2 signaling.

Ticks are small, blood-sucking arachnids, known vectors of various diseases, and found throughout the world. They are distributed basically in almost all regions of China. At present, there is not much information regarding tick species on Hainan Island. They were subjected to morphological identification and imaging on an individual basis. Molecular phylogenetic analyses, based on cox1 and 16S rRNA genes, were utilized to identify the species and determine their approximate phylogenetic origin and genetic diversity. The genomic DNA of tick species was extracted, and cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) and 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes were amplified and sequenced. The identification of five tick species, namely Rhipicephalus microplus, Rhipicephalus sanguineus, Rhipicephalus haemaphysaloides, Haemaphysalis cornigera and Haemaphysalis mageshimaensis, was carried out by morphological analysis. When employing the cox1 and 16S rRNA phylogenetic tree, all isolates of R. microplus from Hainan Island were classified as clade A and B, respectively. R. sanguineus was recognized as a member of the tropical lineage by phylogenetic analysis on the cox1 and 16S rRNA genes. Three phylogenetic groups of R. haemaphysaloides were recognized and found to be related closely to strains from China. H. cornigera and H. mageshimaensis formed one phylogenetic group, presumably from tick strains prevalent in Japan and China. The haplotype network analysis indicated that R. microplus is classed into 26 and 6 haplotypes, which correspond to cox1 and 16S rRNA gene assemblages, respectively. In addition, four cox1 haplotypes were detected in R. sanguineus. This is the first evidence that suggests genetic diversity, host range and geographical distribution of hard ticks in Hainan Island, China.

Interleukin 3 (IL-3) plays an important role in hematopoiesis and immune regulation, brain IL-3/IL-3R signaling has been shown to involve in the physiological and pathological processes of a variety of neurodegenerative diseases, but its role in prion diseases is rarely described. Here, the changes of IL-3/IL-3R and its downstream signaling pathways in a scrapie-infected cell line and in the brains of several scrapie-infected rodent models were evaluated by various methods. Markedly decreased IL-3Rα were observed in the brains of scrapie-infected rodents at terminal stage and in the prion-infected cell model, which showed increased in the brain samples collected at early and middle stage of infection. The IL-3 levels were almost unchanged in the brains of scrapie-infected mice and in the prion-infected cell line. Morphological assays identified close co-localization of the increased IL-3Rα signals with NeuN- and Iba1-positive cells, whereas co-localization of IL-3 signals with NeuN- and GFAP-positive cells in the scrapie-infected brain tissues. Some downstream components of IL-3/IL-3R pathways, including JAK2-STAT5 and PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathways, were downregulated in the brains of scrapie-infected rodents at terminal stage and in the prion-infected cells. Stimulation of recombinant IL-3 on the cultured cells showed prion that the prion-infected cells displayed markedly more reluctant responses of JAK2-STAT5 and PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathways than the normal partner cells. These data suggest that although prion infection or PrPSc accumulation in brain tissues does not affect IL-3 expression, it significantly downregulates IL-3R levels, thereby inhibiting the downstream pathways of IL-3/IL-3R and blocking the neuroregulatory and neuroprotective activities of IL-3.

OBJECTIVE: To explore potential biomarkers indicating endometriosis (EM). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A proteomics method and combined quantitative transcriptomics were adopted to highlight markers in the EM. Venn analysis was used to integrate the ribonucleic acid sequencing (RNA-seq) and protein profiles. Promising candidate markers were tested by enzyme-related immunosorbent assay. RESULTS: A sum of 979 mRNAs and 39 proteins were tested to be significantly differentially expression in the standard cluster compared with the EM cluster. Venn analysis showed a filtered signature of only two down-regulated molecules in the EM group, i.e. fetuin B (FETUB) and serpin family C member 1 (SERPINC1); the latter showed a big variance between the control category and the EM set in the authentication test. CONCLUSION: SERPINC1 may be a useful possible biomarker for the analysis of EM.

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) continues to spread worldwide. Integrated Chinese and Western medicine have had some successes in treating COVID-19. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the efficacy and safety of three traditional Chinese medicine drugs and three herbal formulas (3-drugs-3-formulas) in patients with COVID-19. SEARCH STRATEGY: Relevant studies were identified from 12 electronic databases searched from their establishment to April 7, 2022. INCLUSION CRITERIA: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs), non-RCTs and cohort studies that evaluated the effects of 3-drugs-3-formulas for COVID-19. The treatment group was treated with one of the 3-drugs-3-formulas plus conventional treatment. The control group was treated with conventional treatment. DATA EXTRACTION AND ANALYSIS: Two evaluators screened and selected literature independently, then extracted basic information and assessed risk of bias. The treatment outcome measures were duration of main symptoms, hospitalization time, aggravation rate and mortality. RevMan 5.4 was used to analyze the pooled results reported as mean difference (MD) with 95% confidence interval (CI) for continuous data and risk ratio (RR) with 95% CI for dichotomous data. RESULTS: Forty-one studies with a total of 13,260 participants were identified. Our analysis suggests that compared with conventional treatment, the combination of 3-drugs-3-formulas might shorten duration of fever (MD = -1.39; 95% CI: -2.19 to -0.59; P < 0.05), cough (MD = -1.57; 95% CI: -2.16 to -0.98; P < 0.05) and fatigue (MD = -1.36; 95% CI: -2.21 to -0.51; P < 0.05), decrease length of hospital stay (MD = -2.62; 95% CI -3.52 to -1.72; P < 0.05), the time for nucleic acid conversion (MD = -2.92; 95% CI: -4.26 to -1.59; P < 0.05), aggravation rate (RR = 0.49; 95% CI: 0.38 to 0.64; P < 0.05) and mortality (RR = 0.34; 95% CI: 0.19 to 0.62; P < 0.05), and increase the recovery rate of chest computerized tomography manifestations (RR = 1.22; 95% CI: 1.14 to 1.3; P < 0.05) and total effectiveness (RR = 1.24; 95% CI: 1.09 to 1.42; P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The 3-drugs-3-formulas can play an active role in treating all stages of COVID-19. No severe adverse events related to 3-drugs-3-formulas were observed. Hence, 3-drugs-3-formulas combined with conventional therapies have effective therapeutic value for COVID-19 patients. Further long-term high-quality studies are essential to demonstrate the clinical benefits of each formula. Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) significantly contributes to nitrogen loss in freshwater ecosystems. The sediment-water interface (SWI), known as a "hot spot" for anammox, also harbors numerous macroinvertebrates. However, the impact of their bioturbation on anammox has generally been overlooked. This study compared the effects of three representative macroinvertebrates (i.e., Propsilocerus akamusi, Branchiura sowerbyi and Radix swinhoei) with different bioturbation modes on anammox and the N-removal processes at the SWI by using a microcosmic system. The results demonstrated that all three benthic macroinvertebrates promoted anammox in addition to denitrification processes. The highest N-removal was achieved in the presence of P. akamusi considered as a gallery-diffuser, where the relative abundance of Planctomycetes (to which the anammox bacteria belong) increased by 70%. P. akamusi increased the abundance of anammox hzsB gene by 2.58-fold and promoted potential anammox rate by 12.79 nmol N g-1 h-1, which in turn facilitated total N-removal mass increased by 2.42-fold. In the presence of B. sowerbyi and R. swinhoei, the potential anammox rates increased by 4.81 and 5.57 nmol N g-1 h-1, respectively. These results underscore the substantial impact of macroinvertebrates on anammox and N-removal processes, highlighting their crucial role in N pollution control, and sustaining the overall health and stability of eutrophic water bodies.

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1 ) is the predominant mycotoxin that originated toxicity in broilers through oxidative damage, intestinal barrier dysfunction, reduced immune system and dysfunction of microorganisms and enzymes in target organs. The intestine is the first AFB1 target organ destroyed after the bird's body is induced. This review summarises the current knowledge of the negative results of AFB1 -induced intestinal damage on broiler production. It was conducted in accordance with the relevant studies in the cited literatures being retrieved from PubMed, Google Scholar, Science Direct and Web of Science. First, AFB1 can change the intestinal barrier function by destroying the intestinal architecture, tissue and cell integrity of the gut epithelium. Second, AFB1 can damage the immune barrier function of the gastrointestinal mucosa. Third, the microbiota of birds interacts closely with the ingested aflatoxin. Finally, because broilers are tremendously sensitive to AFB1 contamination, the poisonous and noxious effects of this mycotoxin in the broiler industry cause millions of dollars in losses every year. This review briefly discussed that the AFB1 , which affects the intestines of broiler chickens, was reduced the immune apparatus, antioxidant protection system, gastric system, and broiler production status and its impact on human health. Therefore, this review will improve our perception of the important intestine in a bird's health and the adverse effect of AFB1 .

OBJECTIVES: To study the role of plasma exchange combined with continuous blood purification in the treatment of refractory Kawasaki disease shock syndrome (KDSS). METHODS: A total of 35 children with KDSS who were hospitalized in the Department of Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Hunan Children's Hospital, from January 2019 to August 2022 were included as subjects. According to whether plasma exchange combined with continuous veno-venous hemofiltration dialysis was performed, they were divided into a purification group with 12 patients and a conventional group with 23 patients. The two groups were compared in terms of clinical data, laboratory markers, and prognosis. RESULTS: Compared with the conventional group, the purification group had significantly shorter time to recovery from shock and length of hospital stay in the pediatric intensive care unit, as well as a significantly lower number of organs involved during the course of the disease (P<0.05). After treatment, the purification group had significant reductions in the levels of interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor-α, heparin-binding protein, and brain natriuretic peptide (P<0.05), while the conventional group had significant increases in these indices after treatment (P<0.05). After treatment, the children in the purification group tended to have reductions in stroke volume variation, thoracic fluid content, and systemic vascular resistance and an increase in cardiac output over the time of treatment. CONCLUSIONS: Plasma exchange combined with continuous veno-venous hemofiltration dialysis for the treatment of KDSS can alleviate inflammation, maintain fluid balance inside and outside blood vessels, and shorten the course of disease, the duration of shock and the length of hospital stay in the pediatric intensive care unit.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the efficacy of tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) combined with decitabine, homoharringtonine, and interferon regimen as maintenance therapy for blast phase chronic myeloid leukemia (CML-BP). METHODS: The clinical data of CML-BP patients who received the first major hematological response after induction therapy at The Affiliated Cancer Hospital of Zhengzhou University from June 2015 to December 2021 were analyzed retrospectively. The event-free survival, duration of remission, and overall survival of patients in TKI combined with decitabine, homoharringtonine, interferon group(n=18) and TKI combined with conventional chemotherapy group(n=10) were compared by log-rank test. RESULTS: A total of 28 patients were included, with a median age of 46 (24-58) years old. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis showed that patients in TKI combined with decitabine, homoharringtonine, interferon group had longer event-free survival (7.4 vs 4.3 months, P=0.043, HR=0.44, 95% CI: 0.17-1.14), duration of overall remission (16.1 vs 6.6 months, P=0.005, HR=0.32, 95% CI: 0.11-0.89), overall survival (34.3 vs 13.5 months, P=0.006, HR=0.29, 95% CI: 0.10-0.82) compared with patients in TKI combined with conventional chemotherapy group. CONCLUSION: The TKI combined with decitabine, homoharringtonine and interferon regimen can significantly prolong the survival of CML-BP patients who obtained the major hematological response compared with TKI combined with conventional chemotherapy regimen.
