RESUMEN

Multidrug resistance (MDR) Klebsiella pneumoniae (K. pneumoniae) is a major emerging threat to human health, and leads to very high mortality rate. The effectiveness of colistin, the last resort against MDR Gram-negative bacteria, is significantly compromised due to the widespread presence of plasmid- or chromosome-mediated resistance genes. In this study, o-cymen-5-ol has been found to greatly restore colistin sensitivity in MDR K. pneumoniae. Importantly, this compound does not impact bacterial viability, induce resistance, or cause any noticeable cell toxicity. Various routes disclosed the potential mechanism of o-cymen-5-ol potentiating colistin activity against MDR K. pneumoniae. These include inhibiting the activity of plasmid-mediated mobile colistin resistance gene (mcr-1), accelerating lipopolysaccharide (LPS) - mediated membrane damage, and promoting the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter pathway. To enhance the administration and bioavailability of o-cymen-5-ol, a nanoemulsion has been designed, which significantly improves the loading efficiency and solubility of o-cymen-5-ol, resulting in antimicrobial potentiation of colistin against K. pneumoniae infection. This study has revealed a new understanding of the o-cymen-5-ol nanoemulsion as a means to enhance the effectiveness of colistin against resistant factors. The finding also suggests that o-cymen-5-ol nanoemulsion could be a promising approach in the development of potential treatments for multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacterial infections.

Objective: Studies have demonstrated that tonsillectomy may alter the risk of oropharyngeal cancer (OPC). We systematically reviewed the evidence and pooled data to examine such an association. Methods: PubMed, Embase, and Scopus were searched up to 25th April 2023. Studies reporting an association between tonsillectomy and oropharyngeal cancer risk at any site were included. Results: Five studies were eligible. All examined the risk of tonsillar and base of the tongue (BOT) cancer with prior history of tonsillectomy. On meta-analysis of the data, prior history of tonsillectomy was associated with a significantly decreased risk of tonsillar cancer. The second meta-analysis showed that history of tonsillectomy did not significantly alter the risk of BOT cancer. However, after exclusion of one study, the results showed an increased risk of BOT cancer with a history of tonsillectomy. Conclusions: The scarce data available in the literature suggests that tonsillectomy may reduce the risk of tonsillar cancer but does not alter the risk of BOT cancer. Further studies are needed to explore the association between tonsillectomy and the risk of OPC.

Large-scale, high-quality, and uniform monolayer molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) films are crucial for their applications in next-generation electronics and optoelectronics. Epitaxy is a mainstream technique for achieving high-quality MoS2 films and is demonstrated at a wafer scale up to 4-in. In this study, the epitaxial growth of 8-in. wafer-scale highly oriented monolayer MoS2 on sapphire is reported as with excellent spatial homogeneity, using a specially designed vertical chemical vapor deposition (VCVD) system. Field effect transistors (FETs) based on the as-grown 8-in. wafer-scale monolayer MoS2 film are fabricated and exhibit high performances, with an average mobility and an on/off ratio of 53.5 cm2 V-1 s-1 and 107, respectively. In addition, batch fabrication of logic devices and 11-stage ring oscillators are also demonstrated, showcasing excellent electrical functions. This work may pave the way of MoS2 in practical industry-scale applications.

In this study, a novel polysaccharide (SPN) was extracted by high-temperature pressure method and purified by a DEAE-52 column and a Sephadx G-100 gel column. PPN was obtained after phosphorylation of SPN. The differences of structural features, antioxidant activity, and anti-inflammatory effect of the two polysaccharides were investigated by chemical methods and RAW 264.7 cell model. SPN (Mw = 15.8 kDa) and PPN (Mw = 27.7 kDa) are an acidic polysaccharide with ß-pyranose configuration, mainly containing rhamnose, mannose, glucose, arabinose, and galacose. FI-IR, NMR, and SEM spectra showed phosphorylation of SPN changed its structure. In methylation analysis, the major chains of SPN and PPN were 1,4-linked Glcp, 1,6-linked Galp, 1,2-linked Rhap, and 1.6-linked Manp with terminals of t-linked Glcp, t-linked Araf. The side chain of SPN was 1,4,6-linked Galp, 1,2,5-linked Araf, while the side chain of PPN was 1,4,6-linked Galp, 1,2,4-linked Glcp. In antioxidant activity experiments, the free radical scavenging rate of PPN was stronger than that of SPN. Also, PPN always has better anti-inflammatory on RAW 264.7 cells induced by LPS than that of SPN in same concentration, and it plays an anti-inflammatory role by inhibiting PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway. The results indicated polysaccharide could significantly improve its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory function after phosphorylation. This study provides a potentially antioxidant and anti-inflammatory health food and drug.

OBJECTIVE: The genetic diversity and genetic relationship of Jatropha curcas resources in Sichuan and Yunnan were studied in order to provide a theoretical basis for breeding fine varieties and protecting germplasm resources. METHOD: Ten J. curcas populations were studied by 12 cpSSR primers in this paper. On the base of amplified bands, genetic diversity parameters were analyzed by POPGENE version 1.32. Furthermore, UPGMA tree of 10 J. curcas populations established from pairwise population distance by NTSYSpc version 2.10. RESULT: Twenty-two polymorphic bands were detected, and the percentage of polymorphic loci (P) was 76.28%. Among of the 10 J. curcas populations, the average percentage of polymorphic loci of YNSB was higher than that of the other populations, and it reached 95.45%; On the other hand, that of YNLS was the lowest in all populations, and it was 45.45%. Nei's gene diversity index(H(e)), Shannon information index(I), Effective Num of alleles(A(e)) were respectively 0.4020, 0.576 7, 1.713 6. The total gene diversity (H(T)), the gene differentiation coefficient (G(st)), the gene flow (N(m)) and the gene diversity within populations (H(s)) were 0.443 3, 0.080 2, 3.058 5, 0.405 1, 0.035 7, respectively. The highest gene diversity ratio was showed within populations and the lowest among populations. The results by AMOVA analysis showed that 91.02% of genetic variation existed within populations while 8.98% of genetic variation existed among populations. On the base of the results, the conclusion was extracted that variation existed mainly within populations, and the variation within populations was bigger than that among populations. The result was consistent with that of the gene differentiation coefficient. The order of the genetic diversity was YNLS population < XSBN population < SCHPZ population < SCHD population < SCJH population < YNPR population < SCLB population < YNSB population < YNFY population < SCHL population. The range of Nei's genetic identity and genetic distance of 10 respectively populations were respectively 0.812 7-0.979 8, 0.020 4-0.207 3. All these showed the similarity was higher and there was a close relationship among the 10 respectively populations; Results based on the cluster analysis showed that 10 respectively populations were divided into 2 groups: one was SCJH population and CHPZ population, the other was SCHL population, SCHD population, SCLB population, YNSB population, YNFY population, YNPR population, XSBN population and YNLS population. CONCLUSION: Significant genetic diversity was observed among respectively resources in Sichuan and Yunnan. On the other hand, genetic relationship was close between populations.

A fiber inline Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) consisting of ultra-abrupt fiber tapers was fabricated through a new fusion-splicing method. By fusion-splicing, the taper diameter-length ratio is around 1:1, which is much greater than those (1:10) made by stretching. The proposed fabrication method is very low cost, 1/20-1/50 of those of LPFG pair MZI sensors. The fabricated MZIs are applied to measure refractive index, temperature and rotation angle changes. The temperature sensitivity of the MZI at a length of 30 mm is 0.061 nm/°C from 30-350 °C. The proposed MZI is also used to measure rotation angles ranging from 0° to 0.55°; the sensitivity is 54.98 nm/°. The refractive index sensitivity is improved by 3-5 fold by fabricating an inline micro-trench on the fiber cladding using a femtosecond laser. Acetone vapor of 50 ppm in N(2) is tested by the MZI sensor coated with MFI-type zeolite thin film. The proposed MZI sensors are capable of in situ detection in many areas of interest such as environmental management, industrial process control, and public health.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of SHENG MAI ZHUSHEYE on the movement parameters and viability of human sperm in vitro. METHODS: We collected sperm samples from 33 normal fertile men, divided each into two, and cultured them in vitro with SHENG MAI ZHUSHEYE + Hams-F10 and Hams-F10 alone, respectively. Then we measured the straight line velocity (VSL), curvilinear velocity (VCL), average path velocity (VAP) and the amplitude of lateral head displacement (ALH) of the sperm by computer-aided semen analysis at 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 8 and 12 h. And the sperm viability was detected. RESULTS: VCL was significantly higher at 8 h (P < 0.05) and very significantly higher at 12 h (P < 0.01) in the SHENG MAI ZHUSHEYE + Hams-F10 group than in the Hams-F10 group. VSL, VAP and ALH were significantly increased in the former group at 4, 8 and 12 h as compared with the latter (P < 0.05). The sperm viability was significantly decreased in the Hams-F10 group at 12 h (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: SHENG MAI ZHUSHEYE can improve sperm movement parameters and increase sperm viability in vitro.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the prevalence of bacterial vaginosis of married women of reproductive age in the rural area of Shandong province and its affecting factors, with an aim to provide references for setting up preventing measures for this disease. METHODS: A stratified, population-based, cluster sampling method was employed. The epidemiological investigation on bacterial vaginosis of married women of reproductive age was carried out at four sampling fields. RESULTS: The prevalence of bacterial vaginosis was 6.64%. The main risk factors included: lacked of personal bathtub and towel; did not use sterilized paper on menstrual phase; had no knowledge that gonorrhea, syphilis, AIDS, and trichomonal vaginitis can be transmitted through sexual intercourse. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of bacterial vaginosis in married women of reproductive age in Shandong rural area is high, which correlates with the lower education level, limited health knowledge, and unhealthy behavior.
