RESUMEN

Computing thermal transport from first-principles in UO_{2} is complicated due to the challenges associated with Mott physics. Here, we use irreducible derivative approaches to compute the cubic and quartic phonon interactions in UO_{2} from first principles, and we perform enhanced thermal transport computations by evaluating the phonon Green's function via self-consistent diagrammatic perturbation theory. Our predicted phonon lifetimes at T=600 K agree well with our inelastic neutron scattering measurements across the entire Brillouin zone, and our thermal conductivity predictions agree well with previous measurements. Both the changes due to thermal expansion and self-consistent contributions are nontrivial at high temperatures, though the effects tend to cancel, and interband transitions yield a substantial contribution.

BACKGROUND: Ring chromosomes can be formed by terminal breaks of two arms of a chromosome and their rejoining, leading to a loss of genetic material. They may also be formed by telomere-telomere fusions with no deletion, resulting in the formation of a complete ring. Mosaic X-ring chromosomes are extremely rare and have highly variable phenotypes. Here, we report a case with a mosaic X-ring chromosome in a patient with Turner syndrome, and we illustrate the unreported complicated mechanism using chromosome analysis and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). CASE PRESENTATION: A 10-year-old girl of short stature presenting Turner syndrome was admitted to our hospital. The patient's clinical characteristics were subsequently documented. Genetic analysis showed a karyotype of mostly 45,X[140]/46,X,r(X)[60]. The X ring chromosome was cytogenetically characterized as 45,X/46,X,r(X)(p22.32q21.1), with a length of approximately 74 Mb. CONCLUSIONS: Taken together, we report a rare case with a mosaic X ring chromosome in Turner syndrome and we believe this case expands our collective knowledge of mosaic structural chromosomal disorders and provides new insight into clinical management and genetic counseling for Turner syndrome.

Computing vibrational properties of crystals in the presence of complex defects often necessitates the use of (semi-)empirical potentials, which are typically not well characterized for perfect crystals. Here we explore the efficacy of a commonly used embedded-atomempirical interatomic potential for the UxTh1-xO2system, to compute phonon dispersion, lifetime, and branch specific thermal conductivity. Our approach for ThO2involves using lattice dynamics and the linearized Boltzmann transport equation to calculate phonon transport properties based on second and third order force constants derived from the empirical potential and from first-principles calculations. For UO2, to circumvent the accuracy issues associated with first-principles treatments of strong electronic correlations, we compare results derived from the empirical interatomic potential to previous experimental results. It is found that the empirical potential can reasonably capture the dispersion of acoustic branches, but exhibits significant discrepancies for the optical branches, leading to overestimation of phonon lifetime and thermal conductivity. The branch specific conductivity also differs significantly with either first-principles based results (ThO2) or experimental measurements (UO2). These findings suggest that the empirical potential needs to be further optimized for robust prediction of thermal conductivity both in perfect crystals and in the presence of complex defects.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the genetic basis for a patient with autism. METHODS: High-throughput sequencing was carried out to detect copy number variations in the patient. RESULTS: DNA sequencing found that the patient has carried a 0.11 Mb deletion in distal 2p16.3 spanning from genomic position 50 820 001 to 50 922 000, which resulted removal of exon 6 and part of intron 7 of the NRXN1 gene. The same deletion was not found his parents and brother. CONCLUSION: Partial deletion of the NRXN1 gene may underlie the disease in this patient.

We have synthesized pyrite-type PtO2 (py-PtO2) at 50-60 GPa and successfully recovered it at 1 bar. The observed O-O stretching vibration in Raman spectra provides direct evidence for inter-oxygen bonding in the structure. We also identified the O-H vibrations in py-PtO2 synthesized from the low-temperature areas, indicating hydrogenation, py-PtO2H x ( x ≤ 1). Diffraction patterns are consistent with a range of degrees of hydrogenation controlled by temperature. We found that py-PtO2 has a high bulk modulus, 314 ± 4 GPa. The chemical behaviors found in py-PtO2 have implications for the hydrogen storage in materials with anion-anion bonding, and the geochemistry of oxygen, hydrogen, and transition metals in the deep planetary interiors.

RESUMEN

Surface plasmon polariton (SPP) coupling is a basic subject for plasmonic study and applications. Optical nanoantennas enable downscaling of the SPP coupling to subwavelength scales. In this study, asymmetric optical slot nanoantenna pairs composed of two optical slot nanoantennas with different lengths are proposed for SPP directional coupling. Broadband unidirectional launching of SPPs is achieved, and the extinction ratio obtained experimentally reaches up to 44. The bandwidth is larger than 157 nm. Furthermore, SPP direction-selective radiation is demonstrated using the asymmetric optical slot nanoantenna pairs. A novel plasmonic display device showing the propagation direction of SPPs is achieved by employing asymmetric optical slot nanoantenna pairs without any electric device. Asymmetric optical slot nanoantenna pairs have large potential in the directional control of SPP launching and radiation and can be very useful in compact optical circuits and other photonic integrations.
