As a pre-fermentative practice, cold may facilitate the extraction of grape compounds, resulting in differentiated wines. To explore the potential of these practices, extensive research has been conducted on scientific publications since 2004. There are four main ways to apply cold in pre-fermentative practices: ice wine production, berry freezing, cold maceration of grape must, and cryoconcentration of grape must. Scientific studies investigating these techniques report that certain compounds, especially phenolic compounds, can be elevated in the must, resulting in wines with increased levels of compounds crucial for wine quality. However, the outcomes reported in the literature are often controversial. Various factors influence the results of these practices, such as the mechanical properties of the grape skins, the duration of the processes, and the temperature conditions. Despite these variations, the potential benefits of cold application in winemaking continue to be a significant area of interest for producing high-quality, distinctive wines.

The unique flavour contribution of higher alcohols in alcoholic beverages has received growing attention; however, there is a dearth of information on their in vivo metabolic kinetics. In this study, the composition and content of higher alcohols in different alcoholic beverages from Chinese Baijiu and Lujiu were studied via in vivo analysis using Bama pigs to elucidate the mechanisms for intoxication of alcohol in vitro and in drinkers. Direct injection combined with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) were used to accurately quantify a total of 14 higher alcohols in five alcoholic beverages. Based on the external standard method, a total content of 289.37-938.33 mg/L was detected, mainly 1-butanol, 3-methyl-1-butanol, 1-hexanol, 2-methyl-1-propanol and 2-butanol. Then, headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) and solid-phase extraction (SPE) combined with GC-MS analysis strategy, respectively, were adopted to continuously monitor the changes in the concentrations of ethanol and 11 higher alcohols in the blood within 24 h after gavage of different alcoholic beverages, and the key pharmacokinetic parameters were analysed. The peak concentration (Cmax) and area under curve (AUC) of blood higher alcohols were significantly lower than those of ethanol (p < 0.05), accompanied by a later peak time (Tmax) and a larger apparent clearance rate (CL_F), and there were certain differences between the same higher alcohols in different alcoholic beverages and between different higher alcohols in the same alcoholic beverage. This work provides valuable insights into the metabolism of alcoholic beverages.

BACKGROUND: The Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) is commonly used in clinical settings to assess the severity of alcohol-related problems, with the effectiveness of alcohol reduction interventions varying across this spectrum. In a recent study, we demonstrated that a 12-week intervention involving the provision of free non-alcoholic beverages reduced alcohol consumption among heavy drinkers for up to 8 weeks post-intervention. However, it remains unclear whether this effect was consistent across different AUDIT score ranges. Therefore, this secondary analysis aimed to examine whether the severity of alcohol-related problems, as indicated by AUDIT scores, influences the effectiveness of non-alcoholic beverage provision in reducing alcohol consumption. METHODS: This was a single-center, open-label, randomized, parallel-group study. Participants were Japanese individuals who frequently consumed large quantities of alcohol (at least 40 g/day for men and 20 g/day for women) but were not diagnosed with alcohol dependence. Participants were randomly assigned to either an intervention or control group. The intervention group received free non-alcoholic beverages once every 4 weeks over a 12-week period (24 bottles of 350 mL per case, up to three cases per session, for a total of three sessions). Alcohol and non-alcoholic beverage consumption over the previous 4 weeks was tracked using a drinking diary. For this secondary analysis, participants were categorized into four groups based on their AUDIT scores (group 1: ≤ 7 points, group 2: 8-11 points, group 3: 12-14 points, and group 4: ≥ 15 points), and changes in alcohol consumption were compared across these groups in both the intervention and control participants. RESULTS: The provision of non-alcoholic beverages significantly increased non-alcoholic beverage consumption in all groups. However, alcohol consumption was significantly reduced in the intervention groups compared to controls only in groups 1-3. The reduction in alcohol consumption was less pronounced in groups 3 and 4 compared to group 1 (both, p < 0.05). Importantly, the provision of non-alcoholic beverages did not lead to an increase in alcohol consumption, even among individuals with higher AUDIT scores. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that individuals with higher AUDIT scores may experience a reduced benefit from a 12-week non-alcoholic beverage intervention in terms of alcohol consumption reduction. Nevertheless, this intervention appears to be a safe and effective strategy for reducing alcohol consumption in heavy drinkers who do not have alcohol dependence. Objective This study aims to evaluate the effects of immersion in alcoholic beverages on the surface roughness and color stability of two types of milled zirconia. Materials and methods The sample size included 60 cuboid-shaped samples of two types of zirconia (Z1 and Z2), 30 in each group. Zirconia was milled and sintered at 1,500°C for eight hours. The samples were immersed in artificial saliva (control), red wine, and whiskey three times a day over a 30-day period. After each post-immersion cycle, samples were cleaned ultrasonically. Surface roughness and color parameters were measured using an atomic force microscope (AFM) and spectrophotometer before and after immersion. The collected data was organized into tables, and statistical analysis was conducted using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 27 software (IBM SPSS Statistics, Armonk, NY). For surface roughness, a paired t-test was conducted, while for color change, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's honestly significant difference (HSD) tests were done. Results The mean values of pre- and post-immersion values reveal that whiskey causes the highest difference in surface roughness for Z1 (137.09 nm) and Z2 (86.15 nm) groups, while red wine causes maximum discoloration in both Z1 (2.41) and Z2 (1.94) groups. The paired t-test revealed significant surface roughness changes in Z1 with artificial saliva and red wine, while whiskey (p<0.05), although showing changes, lacked statistical significance (p>0.05). The whiskey group demonstrated a moderate linear association (0.599) between pre- and post-immersion values. For Z2, artificial saliva, red wine, and whiskey (p<0.05) induced statistically significant surface roughness alterations. ANOVA tests indicated significant color changes post-immersion in all three subgroups of Z1 and Z2 (p<0.05 for both). Tukey's HSD test showed significant differences between artificial saliva and red wine (p<0.05), as well as artificial saliva and whiskey (p<0.05) in Z1 and Z2. However, no significant difference was found between red wine and whiskey in both Z1 and Z2 groups (p>0.05). Conclusion Whiskey, red wine, and artificial saliva increased zirconia's surface roughness. Alcoholic solutions altered zirconia's colorimetric parameters, with no significant differences among them.

Alcoholic beverages have developed unique flavors over millennia, with sourness playing a vital role in their sensory perception and quality. Organic acids, as crucial flavor compounds, significantly impact flavor. This paper reviews the sensory attribute of sour flavor and key organic acids in alcoholic beverages. Regarding sour flavor, research methods include both static and dynamic sensory approaches and summarize the interaction of sour flavor with aroma, taste, and mouthfeel. In addition, this review focuses on identifying key organic acids, including sample extraction, chromatography, olfactometry/taste, and mass spectrometry. The key organic acids in alcoholic beverages, such as wine, Baijiu, beer, and Huangjiu, and their primary regulatory methods are discussed. Finally, future avenues for the exploration of sour flavor and organic acids by coupling machine learning, database, sensory interactions and electroencephalography are suggested. This systematic review aims to enhance understanding and serve as a reference for further in-depth studies on alcoholic beverages.

Sensory analysis is an interdisciplinary field that combines multiple disciplines to analyze food qualitatively and quantitatively. At present, this analysis method has been widely used in product development, quality control, marketing, flavor analysis, safety supervision and inspection of alcoholic beverages. Due to the changing needs of analysis, new and more optimized methods are still emerging. Thereinto, intelligent and biometric technologies with growing attention have also been applied to sensory analysis. This work summarized the sensory analysis methods from three aspects, including traditional artificial sensory analysis, intelligent sensory technology, and innovative technologies. Meanwhile, the application sensory analysis in alcoholic beverages and its industrial production was scientifically emphasized. Moreover, the future tendency of sensory analysis in the alcoholic beverage industry is also highlights.

Objective: To calculate the alcohol per capita consumption (APC) in Brazil (Brazil APC) using national data and to establish the Brazil APC as gold standard for the country, replacing the indicator previously calculated by the World Health Organization (WHO) based on international data. Method: The Brazilian public data sources necessary for calculating the recorded APC were selected, and the alcohol concentration was defined by beverage category. For the variables of tourist APC and unrecorded APC, which are unavailable in Brazil, estimates from the United Nations (UN) and the WHO were used. The Brazil APC indicator was calculated and compared to the indicator produced by the WHO through analysis of the medians obtained for the period from 2005 to 2020. Results: The national alcohol consumption indicator was 9.2 liters per capita in 2005, reaching 9.8 in 2020. The WHO indicator showed a consumption of 8.4 liters per capita in 2005, decreasing until 2016 and slightly increasing to 7.8 in 2020. Conclusion: The Brazil APC was calculated based on national sources and showed a distinct trend compared to the WHO indicator, which showed a decrease. The regular and transparent provision of this indicator through government channels will support the development of policies to address alcohol consumption in the country.
Objetivo: Calcular el indicador del consumo de alcohol per cápita en Brasil a partir de datos nacionales, con miras a establecerlo como patrón de referencia para el país en sustitución del indicador calculado anteriormente por la Organización Mundial de la Salud a partir de datos internacionales. Métodos: Se seleccionaron las fuentes públicas de datos de Brasil necesarias para estructurar el cálculo del consumo de alcohol per cápita registrado y se definió la concentración de alcohol por clase de bebida. Para las variables de consumo de alcohol per cápita por parte de turistas y consumo per cápita no registrado, que no están disponibles en Brasil, se utilizaron estimaciones de las Naciones Unidas y de la Organización Mundial de la Salud. Se calculó el indicador del consumo de alcohol per cápita en Brasil y se comparó con el indicador elaborado por la OMS mediante un análisis de las medianas correspondientes al período 2005-2020. Resultados: El indicador nacional del consumo de alcohol fue de 9,2 litros per cápita en el 2005, con un aumento a 9,8 en el 2020. El indicador de la Organización Mundial de la Salud mostró un consumo de 8,4 litros per cápita en el 2005, con una reducción hasta el 2016 y un leve aumento a 7,8 en el 2020. Conclusión: Se calculó el consumo de alcohol per cápita en Brasil a partir de fuentes nacionales, lo que mostró una tendencia distinta de la tendencia descendente del indicador de la Organización Mundial de la Salud. La disponibilidad transparente y regular de este indicador por medio de los canales gubernamentales permitirá su seguimiento, con lo cual se podrán formular políticas para enfrentar el consumo de alcohol en el país.

This study endeavors to examine the levels of risk factors in alcoholic beverages and propose mitigation strategies. GC-MS analysis was utilized to assess risk factors in various distilled-spirits. The content of such risk factors in spirits ranked as follows: vodka ≈ gin < baijiu < whiskey < brandy, and all were adhering to the Chinese national standard. Additionally, a method was refined to alleviate these risks, employing various reagents for activated carbon modification and evaluating their adsorption efficiency for risk factors reduction. Oxalic acid-modified activated carbon exhibited promising adsorption rates for risk factors with acceptable flavor compounds loss, rendering it a prospective solution for health hazard reduction. Characterization via SEM and nitrogen-adsorption-desorption was conducted on the optimal material, complemented by sensory experiments to optimize its application. This study offers valuable insights into the content of risk factors in alcoholic beverages, aiding in improving quality and safety of alcoholic beverages.

This study aimed to point out the possible use of oak leaves (Q. petraea) in the production of fermented alcoholic beverages. Parameters such as antioxidant capacity, total phenolic content, phenolics and sugars were determined using spectrophotometric and chromatographic methods. pH values were also determined, and in the final product with a fermentation length of 85 days, the alcohol content was determined and sensory analysis performed. The antioxidant capacity of the beverage was lower compared to the infusions before fermentation, and its highest values were recorded in the leaf samples, in which the highest values of phenolic compounds and the total phenolic content were also recorded. A decrease in the content of total phenolics was recorded with the increasing length of fermentation in beverage samples. However, the fermentation process had a positive effect on the contents of some phenolic substances such as catechin, gallic acid and gallocatechin. Sensory analysis showed a higher acceptability of the fermented beverage without the addition of orange, which could be caused by the higher sugar content in these samples. Oak leaves therefore represent a suitable raw material for the production of a fermented alcoholic beverage, without the need to enrich the taste with other ingredients.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the health and economic burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) attributed to alcohol consumption in 2019 for the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS) stratified by states. STUDY DESIGN: Observational, descriptive, and ecological study. METHODS: We used population attributable fractions (PAFs) of NCDs due to alcohol consumption from the Global Burden of Disease study. We applied the PAFs to the costs of hospitalizations and outpatient procedures of medium to high complexity paid by SUS for each outcome, obtained from official databases. We also calculated the disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) and mortality caused by alcohol-related NCDs. We converted the costs into international dollars (Int$) using the purchasing parity power in 2019. RESULTS: Alcohol-related NCDs accounted for 8.48% of deaths and 7.0% of DALYs among men, and 1.33% of deaths and 1.6% of DALYs among women. The main diseases were substance use, digestive, and neoplastic diseases. The SUS spent Int$202.0 million on alcohol-related NCDs, mostly on hospitalizations. The highest health burden was observed in the states of the Northeast region, and the highest expenses in the states from the South. The burden and cost values varied by sex, age group, and state. CONCLUSION: The study showed that alcohol consumption has a significant impact on Brazilian population morbidity and mortality and SUS expenditures, especially among men. These results can support policies for the prevention and control of alcohol consumption and health promotion at the subnational level, prioritizing strategies that are more appropriate to local realities.

As propagandas de bebidas alcóolicas, além de serem mais frequentes do que outras mercadorias, também apresentam conteúdo que pode ter papel facilitador no uso dessa substância psicoativa, visto que, na maior parte delas, trazem ideias e sensações de prazer. Por isso, esta pesquisa consistiu na identificação e análise qualitativa de propagandas de cerveja que tiveram alguma denúncia feita ao ou pelo Conselho Nacional de Autorregulamentação Publicitária (Conar), nos últimos cinco anos (2015 a 2020), a partir do levantamento dessas denúncias no site do Conar e, posteriormente, foi realizada análise dos motivos condizentes com o código. Como resultado, constatou-se uma progressão nos alinhamentos entre as denúncias e as decisões, sendo encontrada maior dificuldade no alinhamento da infração em relação ao conteúdo das peças publici-tárias do que em questões técnicas.
Advertisements for alcoholic beverages, in addition to being more frequent than other goods, also present content that can play a role in facilitating the use of this psychoactive substance, since, in most of them, they bring ideas and sensations of pleasure. Therefore, this research consisted of the identification and qualitative analysis of beer advertisements that had any complaints made to or by the National Advertising Self-Regulation Council (Conar), in the last five years (2015 to 2020), based on the survey of these complaints on the website of Conar and, subsequently, an analysis of the reasons consistent with the code was carried out. As a result, there was a progression in the alignments between complaints and decisions, with greater difficulty being found in aligning the infraction in relation to the content of the advertising pieces than in technical issues.
Los anuncios de bebidas alcohólicas, además de ser más frecuentes que los de otros productos, también presentan contenidos que pueden desempeñar un papel a la hora de facilitar el consumo de esta sustan-cia psicoactiva, ya que, en la mayoría de ellos, aportan ideas y sensaciones de placer. Por lo tanto, esta investigación consistió en la identificación y análisis cualitativo de los anuncios de cerveza que tuvieron alguna denuncia realizada ante o por el Consejo Nacional de Autorregulación Publicitaria (Conar), en los últimos cinco años (2015 a 2020), a partir de la encuesta a estos. denuncias en el sitio web del Conar y, posteriormente, se realizó un análisis de los motivos compatibles con el código. Como resultado, hubo una progresión en los alineamientos entre denuncias y decisiones, encontrándose mayor dificultad en alinear la infracción con el contenido de las piezas publicitarias que en cuestiones técnicas.

The mechanisms by which alcohol, alcoholic beverages, and their de-alcoholized derivatives affect animal physiology, metabolism, and gut microbiota have not yet been clarified. The polyphenol, monosaccharide, amino acid, and organic acid contents of four common alcoholic beverages (Chinese Baijiu, beer, Chinese Huangjiu, and wine) and their de-alcoholized counterparts were analyzed. The research further explored how these alcoholic beverages and their non-alcoholic versions affect obesity and gut microbiota, using a high-fat diet bee model created with 2% palm oil (PO). The results showed that wine, possessing the highest polyphenol content, and its de-alcoholized form, particularly when diluted five-fold (WDX5), markedly improved the health markers of PO-fed bees, including weight, triglycerides, and total cholesterol levels in blood lymphocytes. WDX5 treatment notably increased the presence of beneficial microbes such as Bartonella, Gilliamella, and Bifidobacterium, while decreasing Bombilactobacillus abundance. Moreover, WDX5 was found to closely resemble sucrose water (SUC) in terms of gut microbial function, significantly boosting short-chain fatty acids, lipopolysaccharide metabolism, and associated enzymatic pathways, thereby favorably affecting metabolic regulation and gut microbiota stability in bees.

With increasing interest in Korean foods and beverages, Korean traditional alcoholic beverages need to be studied. To characterize Korean traditional alcoholic beverages, we analyzed the metabolites of Takju, Yakju, and Traditional-Soju using 48 commercial products. We performed non-targeted metabolite profiling using gas chromatography time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC-TOF-MS) and identified 33 significantly discriminant metabolites, including nine organic acids, three amino acids, and seven fatty acids, in the three types of alcoholic beverage. Subsequently, we quantified the profiled metabolites in each product and compared their contents to identify alcoholic beverage type-specific metabolites. Thus, we figured out seven metabolites using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. The results revealed that octadecanoic acid (limit of detection (LOD) to 168.72 mg/L), nonanoic acid (LOD to 112.54 mg/L), and octanoic acid (8.00 to 145.08 mg/L) in Takju; succinic acid (LOD to 1.90 mg/mL), heptanoic acid (LOD to 343.23 mg/L), and hexadecanoic acid (20.28 to 126.45 mg/L) in Yakju; and malonic acid (LOD to 19.13 mg/mL) in Traditional-Soju, with an area under the curve (AUC) > 0.7, are important metabolites that can distinguish the type of alcoholic beverage. Our results provide qualitative and quantitative metabolite information about Korean traditional alcoholic beverages that can be used by consumers and manufacturers.

Intuitive eating involves following body signals to guide eating decisions and avoiding restrictive diets. Mindful eating is paying full attention to sensory experiences and fostering nonjudgmental awareness. We aimed to elucidate potential relationships between beverage intake and intuitive and mindful eating scores. This cross-sectional exploratory study (October 2021-December 2022) enrolled adult male and female participants who provided sociodemographic and health-related information and subsequently completed the Beverage Intake Questionnaire, the Mindful Eating Questionnaire (MEQ-30), and the Intuitive Eating Scale (IES-2). Bidirectional relationships were observed between beverage intake and intuitive and mindful eating scores. The total beverage intake of males was double compared with that of females, with the intake being mainly derived from sugar-sweetened beverages (p = 0.000). Increased total water intake was positively correlated with IES-2 and its subscale scores and was negatively correlated with MEQ-30 scores in both sexes (p < 0.05). Alcoholic beverage intake was associated with reductions in IES-2 and MEQ-30 scores, whereas unconditional permission to eat increased by 18.3% in males. In females, the consumption of milk-based beverages decreased the IES-2 scores. Understanding the complex relationships between beverage intake and intuitive and mindful eating may deepen our understanding of individual dietary behaviors and inform dietary interventions.

The regulatory Indian environment for advertising high fat, salt, and sugar (HFSS) foods and non-alcoholic beverages, on various media was reviewed. Identified national-level policies were categorised as mandatory or self-regulatory based on legal content. For each mandatory regulation, Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT) analysis was undertaken to determine how existing policies could be strengthened to safeguard children from unhealthy food advertisements. Thirteen policies (nine mandatory; four self-regulatory) relevant to advertising in India were identified. Of the nine mandatory policies, Guidelines for Prevention of Misleading Advertisements and Endorsements for Misleading Advertisements, 2022, is the only policy that restricts HFSS food advertisements to children across all media. There are key shortfalls, including limited scope of 'child-targeted' advertisements and lack of criteria to define HFSS foods. A robust regulatory framework is needed to protect children from HFSS food marketing, not just what is 'directed' at them, with clear evidence-based food classification criteria.

The purpose of this study was to determine the origin, presence, and fate of the endocrine disruptor di-ethylhexil phthalate (DEHP) during tequila production. For this, three tequila factories (small, medium, and large) were monitored. DEHP concentrations in water, agave, additives, lubricating greases, neoprene seals, and materials of each stage process were analyzed using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. DEHP mass balances were performed to identify the processes with significant changes in the inputs/outputs. DEHP was detected in agave at up to 0.08 ± 0.03 mg kg-1, water 0.02 ± 0.01 mg kg-1, lubricant greases 131.05 ± 2.80 mg kg-1, and neoprene seals 369.11 ± 22.52 mg kg-1. Whereas, tequila produced in the large, medium, and small factories contained 0.05 ± 0.01, 0.24 ± 0.04, and 1.43 ± 0.48 mg kg-1 DEHP, respectively. Furthermore, in waste materials (vinasses and bagasse) released, 534.26 ± 349.02, 947.18 ± 65.84, and 5222.60 ± 2836.94 mg of DEHP was detected for every 1000 L of tequila produced. The most significant increase in DEHP occurred during the sugar extraction and distillation stages. Results demonstrate that main raw materials, such as agave and water, contain DEHP, but lubricant greases and neoprene seals are the major sources of DEHP contamination. Identification of the contamination sources can help the tequila industry to take actions to reduce it, protect consumer health and the environment, and prevent circular contamination.

PURPOSE: The objective is to evaluate the association between various indicators of alcohol consumption and the degree of adherence to the Mediterranean diet among the Spanish adult population. METHODS: A cross-sectional study including 44,834 participants ≥ 15 years of age from the 2017 National Health Survey and the 2020 European Health Survey in Spain. Alcohol patterns were defined based on (1) average intake: individuals were classified as low risk (1-20 g/day in men and 1-10 g/day in women) and high risk (> 20 g/day in men or > 10 g/day in women), (2) binge drinking, and (3) alcoholic beverage preference. Non-adherence to the Mediterranean diet was defined as scoring < 7 points on an adapted Mediterranean Diet Adherence Screener index (range 0-10). Odds ratios (OR) were estimated using logistic regression models adjusted for relevant covariates. RESULTS: Compared to non-drinkers, low and high-risk drinkers were more likely to report non-adherence to the Mediterranean diet: ORs 1.35 (95% CI 1.23; 1.49) and 1.54 (95% CI 1.34; 1.76), respectively. Similarly, reports of binge drinking less than once a month was associated with higher likelihood of non-adherence (OR 1.17; 95% CI 1.04; 1.31). Individuals reporting no preference for a specific beverage and those with a preference for beer or for spirits had lower adherence: ORs 1.18 (95% CI 1.05; 1.33), 1.31 (95% CI 1.17; 1.46), and 1.72 (95% CI 1.17; 2.54), respectively, while a preference for wine showed no association (OR 1.01; 95% CI 0.90; 1.13). CONCLUSION: Alcohol consumption, even in low amounts, is associated with lower adherence to the Mediterranean diet. Therefore, alcoholic beverages should not be included in measures that define the Mediterranean diet.

This study reports the distribution of (2E,4E,6Z)-nonatrienal (1) and trans-4,5-epoxy-(E)-2-decenal (2) in wines and spirits. We validated a quantification method using solid-phase extraction (SPE) and negative chemical ionization (NCI, NH3) gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis. Both were identified for the first time in wines and spirits from different grape varieties and raw materials. Their olfactory detection thresholds (ODTs) were 16 and 60 ng/L, respectively. Analysis of 66 wines showed that the highest levels of (1) (441.3 ng/L) and (2) (386.5 ng/L) were found in red and white wines, respectively. At these levels, they modify the balance of the fruity expression of red (fresh to cooked fruits) and white (vegetal/green hazelnut nuance) wines. Similar quantitative and sensory analyses were conducted in spirits. With ODT estimated at 500 and 400 ng/L and concentrations ranging from trace amounts to 1.1 and 2.4 µg/L respectively, (1) and (2) can contribute directly to the aroma of spirits.

BACKGROUND: We recently demonstrated that a 12-week intervention consisting of the provision of free non-alcoholic beverages reduced alcohol consumption in excessive drinkers for 8 weeks after the intervention. However, gender differences in this effect were not explored. Thus, this secondary analysis investigated gender differences in the influence of non-alcoholic beverage provision on alcohol consumption. METHODS: Individuals who frequently drank excessively (at least 40 g/day in men and 20 g/day in women) and who were not diagnosed with alcoholism were recruited. Participants were randomized into the intervention or control group by simple randomization using a random number table. In the intervention group, free non-alcoholic beverages were provided once every 4 weeks for 12 weeks (three times in total). The consumption of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages was calculated based on a drinking diary submitted with the previous 4 weeks' of data. In this study, we compared the longitudinal changes in alcohol consumption between genders in both groups. RESULTS: The provision of non-alcoholic beverages significantly reduced alcohol consumption in both genders; however, significant differences in alcohol consumption between the control and intervention groups were observed only in men. The average alcohol consumption during the intervention fell below the level associated with a high risk of non-communicable diseases in men (32.7 g/day), but not in women (24.8 g/day). Correlation coefficient analysis showed that replacing alcoholic beverages with the provided non-alcoholic beverages resulted in different drinking patterns according to gender. The percent changes in the consumption of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages relative to baseline levels did not differ between genders. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that the provision of non-alcoholic beverages reduced alcohol consumption irrespective of gender. Of note, providing non-alcoholic beverages might be particularly useful for reducing high-risk alcohol consumption in male excessive drinkers. TRIAL REGISTRATION: UMIN UMIN000047949. The university is considered an environment that favors the initiation and use of substances, especially those that are legal, such as alcohol. This consumption can be differentiated in university students, which makes it necessary to better understand this behavior. Taking into account these aspects, we analyzed the abusive consumption of alcoholic beverages in university students and its association with socioeconomic and behavioral factors. We conducted a cross-sectional study with regularly enrolled students. We assessed the abusive consumption of alcoholic beverages using the binge drinking pattern. We collected socioeconomic and behavioral data using a questionnaire. The association between the variables was verified using logistic regression. Abusive consumption of alcoholic beverages was high, with a high weekly frequency. The association with sociodemographic and behavioral factors can increase the health risk. Education campaigns within institutions with students in the classroom and with all those who can influence these students are important. As there are few studies that consider other health risk factors that have not been analyzed yet, such as those treated in our study, with the abusive consumption of alcoholic beverages, this study seeks to contribute to the knowledge of the relationships between these variables and in the elaboration of actions aimed at improving the lifestyle and health of university students.
