AIM: To assess the clinical utility of novel anthropometric indices and other traditional anthropometric indices in identifying the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) among South African adult females. METHODS: In the first South African National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (SANHANES-1), traditional [body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR)] and novel [a-body shape index (ABSI), abdominal volume index (AVI), body adiposity index (BAI), body roundness index (BRI), conicity index (CI), and Clínica Universidad de Navarra-Body Adiposity Estimator (CUN-BAE)] anthropometric indices were assessed. T2D was diagnosed using glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) ≥ 6.5% among participants without known T2D. Basic statistics and multiple regression analyses were explored the association between anthropometric indices and newly diagnosed T2D. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was used to measure the predictive ability of both traditional and novel indices. RESULTS: Among 2 623 participants, 384 (14.6%) had newly diagnosed T2D. All anthropometric indices mean values were significantly higher among participants with T2D (most p < 0.001). Higher mean values increased T2D odds e.g., in the model adjusted for age, employment, residence, and population group, odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for T2D with some of anthropometric indices were: 1.86 (1.60-2.15) for WC, 1.84 (1.59-2.13) for WHtR, 1.73 (1.51-1.99) for AVI, 1.71 (1.49-1.96) for BRI and 1.86 (1.57-2.20) for CUN-BAE. The top quartile for all indices had the highest T2D odds (p < 0.05). These outcomes were the highest for WC, AVI, and CUN-BAE and remained so even after removing the confounding effects of age, employment, population group, and residence. Based on the ROC analysis, none of the anthropometrical indices performed excellently (i.e., had an area under the curve [AUC] > 0.80). The WC, WHtR, AVI, BRI, and CUN-BAE, however, performed acceptably (AUCs 0.70-0.79), while also exhibiting corresponding cutoff values of 86.65 cm, 0.57, 15.52, 3.83, and 38.35, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The data shows that traditional and novel anthropometric indices similarly identifying newly diagnosed T2D among adult South African females. We recommend the continuing the use of traditional indices, as they are affordable and easy to use in our setting.

There are available studies assessing the development of maxillary sinuses in relation to the viscerocranium. However, there are no publications analyzing the development of maxillary sinuses in relation to the development of the cranium, i.e. both the viscerocranium and the neurocranium. The aim of the study was to analyze the correlation between the dimensions of maxillary sinuses and anthropometric measurements of the cranium in children. The study was retrospective and was conducted at the based on the results of head computed tomography investigation. The study group included 180 girls and 180 boys, aged from birth to 18 years. To assess the correlation between the degree of development of the paranasal sinuses and the growth of the cranium, standard anthropometric points on the skull and strictly defined dimensions of the height, length, width, and volume of right and left maxillary sinuses were used. In the study group, both in girls and boys, a statistically significant positive correlation was found at the significance level of p < 0.0001 between: the height, length, width and volume of right and left maxillary sinuses, and cranial maximum length (glabella-opisthocranion), its maximum width (euryon-euryon), height (basion-bregma) and the length of the cranial base (basion-nasion) and the dimension of the subspinale-opisthocranion in children. Our study showed a statistically significant positive correlation between the development of maxillary sinuses and the growth of the cranium in children.

Background: Previous studies have reported an association between obesity and risk of sepsis. However, the results have been inconsistent, and no causal inference can be drawn from them. Therefore, we conducted a Mendelian-randomization (MR) study to investigate causal relationships between available obesity-related anthropometric indicators and sepsis risk. Methods: We performed MR analyses using genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary statistics on 14 anthropometric indicators [namely body mass index (BMI), waist and hip circumferences (WC, HC), basal metabolic rate (BMR), whole-body fat mass (WBFM), trunk fat mass (TFM), leg fat mass (LFM), arm fat mass (AFM), body fat percentage (BFP), whole-body fat-free mass (WBFFM), trunk fat-free mass (TFFM), leg fat-free mass (LFFM), arm fat-free mass (AFFM), and whole-body water mass (WBWM)], sepsis, critical care sepsis, and 28-day death due to sepsis from the UK Biobank and FinnGen cohort. The primary method of MR analysis was inverse variance-weighted average method. Sensitivity analyses, including heterogeneity and horizontal-pleiotropy tests, were conducted to assess the stability of the MR results. Additionally, we applied multiple-variable MR (MVMR) to evaluate the effect of BMI on the relationship between each anthropometric indicator and sepsis risk. Results: Our MR analysis demonstrated causal relationships between 14 anthropometric indicators and sepsis of different severities. After we adjusted for BMI, MVMR analyses indicated that WC, BMR, LFM, WBFFM, TFFM, AFFM, and WBWM remained significantly associated with the presence of sepsis (all p < 0.05). A sensitivity analysis confirmed the reliability of our MR results, and no significant horizontal pleiotropy was detected. Conclusion: This MR study revealed that increases in obesity-related anthropometric indicators had causal associations with a higher risk of sepsis, which might provide important insights for the identification of individuals at risk for sepsis in community and hospital settings.

BACKGROUND: Circulating dietary biomarkers are not direct proxies for intake, as the biomarkers reflect not only food and supplement consumption but also nutrient absorption, metabolism, and tissue distribution. Therefore, along with nutrient intake, several other upstream factors can impact dietary biomarker concentrations, including demographic, medical history, and genetic factors. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to explore the dietary and nondietary determinants of circulating levels of vitamins A, C, D, and E among children aged 6 months to 4 years. METHODS: Plasma retinol, beta-carotene, ascorbic acid, 25(OH)D, alpha-tocopherol, and gamma-tocopherol were measured in 2887 samples from 1490 children enrolled in The Environmental Determinants of Diabetes in the Young (TEDDY) study. Dietary intake was assessed with 3-day food records. Associations of genetic and environmental factors with biomarker concentrations were examined using multivariable linear regression models with random intercepts. RESULTS: All biomarkers except retinol were positively associated with intake of the same nutrient. Inverse associations were identified between recent gastrointestinal infection and ß-carotene, ascorbic acid, and α-tocopherol, while recent respiratory infection was associated inversely with plasma retinol. Several genetic determinants of biomarker status were identified, validating previously reported findings. For some genetic and environmental exposures, we found evidence of statistical interaction with same-nutrient intake, indicating that the association between intake and biomarker concentration is dependent upon the level or status of these other exposures. For example, the association between ß-carotene intake and concentration is weaker among children with a recent respiratory infection. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that non-dietary exposures including childhood infections can alter micronutrient metabolism. This summary of micronutrient determinants will facilitate improved design of future analyses exploring the role of diet in childhood chronic disease etiology through a better understanding of relevant potential confounders and mediators of the diet-outcome relationships.

Objective: The accurate diagnosis of thyroid nodules is crucial for effective management and the detection of malignancy. Fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) and fine-needle non-aspiration biopsy (FNNAB) are widely used techniques for evaluating thyroid nodules. In this study, we aimed to investigate the impact of anthropometric parameters and sonographic characteristics on the choice between FNAB and FNNAB in terms of diagnostic yield. Material and Methods: This retrospective and cross-sectional analysis involved 188 cases with a total of 225 thyroid nodules. Each nodule initially underwent either FNAB or FNNAB and if the initial biopsy did not yield a diagnostic result, the nodule was re-biopsied using the alternate technique. Ultrasound was used to evaluate the nodules, with a focus on echogenicity, calcifications, size, vascularity, and the presence of a halo sign. Both FNAB and FNNAB were performed using a 25-gauge needle, with the only difference being the application of suction. Results: FNAB demonstrated a higher diagnostic rate for nodules with a taller-than-wide shape (anteroposteriorto-transverse ratio ≥1), nodules sized 10-40 mm, nodules with volumes <0.5 cc, and hypoechoic nodules (P < 0.001 for all). FNAB also outperformed FNNAB in the assessment of the right-sided, inferior, and posterior nodules (P < 0.001), nodules with and without calcification (P = 0.041 and P = 0.020, respectively), and nodules with type 1 and type 2 vascularity patterns (P = 0.006 and P = 0.017, respectively). FNAB was effective in obese individuals (Body mass index ≥40 kg/m2), males with a waist circumference of <94 cm, females with a waist circumference of ≥80 cm, and females with a neck circumference of ≥34 cm (P = 0.011, P = 0.044, P = 0.029, and P = 0.008, respectively). Conclusion: Anthropometric parameters and sonographic characteristics influenced the diagnostic yield of FNAB and FNNAB, with FNAB generally demonstrating superior results. Given the importance of obtaining an accurate diagnostic result from fine-needle biopsy, clinicians should consider both the sonographic features of the nodule and the anthropometric measurements of the patient when selecting a biopsy technique.

BACKGROUND: Growth references play a crucial role in the screening, evaluation, and surveillance of children, aiding in the early identification of the requirement for diverse growth-promoting interventions. Variations in human growth across distinct ethnic cohorts arise from genetic disparities, lifestyle variances, nutritional diversity, and diverse social and environmental contexts. Consequently, the selection of growth references markedly influences the prevalence of developmental disorders and nutritional imbalances in children. The study aims to assess the growth percentile of children in the north-east of Iran and establish population-specific reference charts for length, weight, and head circumference spanning from birth to 24 months. METHODS: This cross-sectional population-based research conducted in the north-east of Iran, from 2016 to 2023. The Data extracted from the electronic health records of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences. All apparently healthy children aged from birth to 24 months who were measured at least once by health staff at the ages of birth,1,2,4,6,7,9,12,15,18,24 months were included. The target population of the study were 479,089 children (96.21%), encompassing 233,565 girls (48.75%) and 245,524 boys (51.25%). Gender-specific percentile curves for length, weight, and head circumference concerning age, as well as weight concerning length, were derived using the GAMLSS approach. RESULTS: From the anthropometric information of 479,089 children (245,524 boys and 233,565 girls), growth charts were constructed. In comparison to the standard WHO chart, Iranian neonates displayed lower weight across all percentiles during the first month after birth, exhibited decreased head circumference at the 3rd percentile, and boys showed reduced length across all percentiles. After this age, Iranian children demonstrated increased weight, length, and head circumference. CONCLUSIONS: This research introduces the inaugural large-scale endeavor for indigenous reference charts. Through the noted distinctions from the international reference, the utilization of this novel resource offers the potential to enhance the surveillance of children's growth within the area. Moreover, by accurately assessing growth anomalies such as underweight, stunting, and wasting, it expands the domain of impactful policies in this sphere. Simultaneously, it enables the exploration of the secular trend of children's growth in the forthcoming years.

AIMS: To compare the predictive abilities of body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), waist-corrected BMI (wBMI), a body shape index (ABSI), and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) for the incidence of type 2 diabetes and determine the practical cut-off values for the Japanese population. METHODS: This study used data from 155,623 participants who had medical checkups with Panasonic Corporation between 2008 and 2021. Predictive abilities of anthropometric indices were evaluated at 13 years using time-dependent receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analyses. RESULTS: 8,800 developed type 2 diabetes during the study period. The area under the ROC curve for the WHtR was high (0.717, 95 % confidence interval [CI]: 0.710-0.724), with cut-off value of 0.497 in men, while those for wBMI (0.829, 95 % CI: 0.808-0.848) and WHtR (0.826, 95 % CI: 0.806-0.845) were high in women, with cut-off values of 18.6 kg/m and 0.510, respectively. It was also showed WHtR was the most effective in men, while WHtR and wBMI outperformed WC and were comparable to BMI in women for predicting type 2 diabetes. CONCLUSIONS: WHtR demonstrated superior effectiveness in predicting type 2 diabetes in men, while both WHtR and wBMI showed higher effectiveness than WC and were almost equivalent to BMI in women.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between the dietary oxidative balance score (OBS), an indicator of oxidative stress, anthropometric measures and socioeconomic factors in women at low risk of cardiovascular disease. METHODS: The participants' 3-day dietary intake, demographic information, anthropometric measurements and blood pressure values were recorded, and the Framingham Risk Score (FRS) and OBS values were determined. Oxidative balance score consists of prooxidant and antioxidant scores. Prooxidant scores were calculated from red meat consumption, total iron and polyunsaturated fatty acid intake, alcohol and cigarette consumption parameters, while antioxidant scores were calculated by assessing cruciferous consumption, dietary total vitamin C, vitamin E, ß-carotene, ß-cryptoxanthin, ß-carotene, ß-cryptoxanthin, lycopene, lutein+zeaxanthin and selenium intake. RESULTS: A total of 145 women were included in the study. Education level was associated with anthropometric measurements, income status with antioxidant and prooxidant scores, and exercise status with OBS (p<0.05). Weight, waist, hip, BMI, waist/hip, and waist/height ratio were significantly lower in subjects with low prooxidant score (p<0.05); there was no significant relationship between age, systolic, diastolic, FRS (p>0.05). CONCLUSION: The study, conducted in healthy women, showed that dietary oxidative balance scoring is promising in preventing the development of CVD and reducing the burden of disease, and that prospective cohort studies should be conducted in this area.

BACKGROUND: Unbalanced levels of serum total cholesterol (TC) and its subgroups are called dyslipidemia. Several anthropometric indices have been developed to provide a more accurate assessment of body shape and the health risks associated with obesity. In this study, we used the random forest model (RF), decision tree (DT), and logistic regression (LR) to predict total cholesterol based on new anthropometric indices in a sex-stratified analysis. METHOD: Our sample size was 9639 people in which anthropometric parameters were measured for the participants and data regarding the demographic and laboratory data were obtained. Aiding the machine learning, DT, LR, and RF were drawn to build a measurement prediction model. RESULTS: Anthropometric and other related variables were compared between both TC <200 and TC ≥200 groups. In both males and females, Lipid Accumulation Product (LAP) had the greatest effect on the risk of TC increase. According to results of the RF model, LAP and Visceral Adiposity Index (VAI) were significant variables for men. VAI also had a stronger correlation with HDL-C and triglyceride. We identified specific anthropometric thresholds based on DT analysis that could be used to classify individuals at high or low risk of elevated TC levels. The RF model determined that the most important variables for both genders were VAI and LAP. CONCLUSION: We tend to present a picture of the Persian population's anthropometric factors and their association with TC level and possible risk factors. Various anthropometric indices indicated different predictive power for TC levels in the Persian population.

Anthropometric parameters are widely used in the clinical assessment of hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. However, few studies have compared the association between different anthropometric parameters and insulin resistance (IR). This study was aimed at investigating the relationship between 6 indicators, including body mass index (BMI), calf circumference (CC), arm circumference (AC), thigh circumference (TC), waist circumference (WC), waist-height ratio (WHtR), and IR. Homeostasis Model Assessment of Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR) was used to measure IR. Weighted linear regression was used to assess the relationship between different parameters and IR. The receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) was employed to compare the strength of the relationship between different anthropometric parameters and IR. A total of 8069 participants were enrolled in our study, including 4873 without IR and 3196 with IR. The weighted linear regression results showed that BMI, CC, AC, TC and WC were significantly correlated with IR, except WHtR. After adjusting for multiple confounding factors, we found that BMI, AC and WC were significantly positively correlated with IR, while TC was significantly negatively correlated with IR. Logistic regression results showed that a larger TC was associated with a decreased risk of IR. In addition, BMI and WC had similar areas under the curve (AUC: 0.780, 95% CI 0.770-0.790; AUC: 0.774, 95% CI 0.763-0.784, respectively), which were higher than TC and AC (AUC: 0.698, 95% CI 0.687-0.710, AUC: 0.746, 95% CI 0.735-0.757, respectively). To our knowledge, this is the first study to report a negative correlation between TC and IR among patients without diabetes mellitus. Therefore, TC may be a new tool to guide public health and a clinical predictor of IR in non-diabetic patients.

The aim of this study was to compare the head displacement of the KPSIT C50 dummy, representing a 50th percentile male, with the KPSIT C5 dummy, representing a 5th percentile female, during low-speed collisions. Low-speed collisions, such as those occurring in urban traffic jams, are increasingly common. The research was conducted on a dedicated educational workstation designed to measure forces in seat belts. This study is part of a comprehensive research project on crash tests involving both volunteers and physical KPSIT dummies. The tests were conducted at a speed of 20 km/h to simulate real-world low-speed collision scenarios. The findings demonstrate that using a sports bucket seat with four-point or five-point harnesses significantly reduces head displacement compared with standard car seats. Such seating configurations enhance safety by minimizing the risk of head injuries, which can occur when airbags do not deploy during low-speed collisions. Moreover, the study highlights that standard three-point seat belts allow for greater forward head movement, increasing the risk of head contact with the vehicle's interior during collisions at speeds too low to trigger airbag deployment.

The MIND is a novel eating plan preserves cognitive function. Propolis is a resinous substance that has several biological and medicinal properties. This study examines the effect of the MIND diet and propolis supplementation on MetS indices among metabolic syndrome subjects. This RCT study, was conducted on adults with metabolic syndrome who were referred to the Hazrat Ali Health Center in Isfahan. 84 eligible subjects were divided into 3 groups. Including MIND diet + Propolis supplement, MIND diet + placebo, and control group. The data obtained from the subjects was analyzed in two descriptive and analytic levels. The Shapiro-Wilk test and examination of skewness were conducted to assess the normality of the distribution of quantitative variables. Quantitative variables were reported using either the mean (SD). SPSS Statistics software version 26 was used for statistical analysis of data. In this study the MIND + Propolis group compared to the control group after adjusting variables showed a significant decrease (p-value < 0.05) in weight, BMI, WC, SBP, DBP, and TG by 0.97 times (3%), 0.97 times (3%), 0.98 times (2%), 0.93 times (7%), 0.94 times (6%), and 0.75 times (25%), respectively; this significant change was also observed in FBS (p-value < 0.001) by 0.85 times (15%), and HDL-C (mg/dl) has shown a significant increase (p-value < 0.05) by 1.17 times (17%). MIND group compared to the control group after adjusting variables showed a significant decrease (p-value < 0.05) in BMI, WC, and SBP by 0.98 times (2%), 0.98 times (2%), and 0.95 times (5%), respectively; this significant change (p-value < 0.001) was also observed in DBP, FBS, and TG by 0.92 times (8%), 0.83 times (17%), and 0.71 times (29%), respectively; HDL-C has shown a significant increase (p-value < 0.001) by 1.21 times (21%), and weight has shown a non-significant decrease (p-value = 0.055) by 0.98 times (2%). This study indicated that the MIND diet + Propolis supplement and MIND diet compared to the control group can significantly decrease BMI, WC, SBP, DBP, FBS, TG, and weight (non-significant for the MIND group), and also increase HDL-C.

Background: Low levels of physical activity in high- to low-income countries, including South Africa, pose a great risk of cardiovascular-related diseases. Aim: This study aimed to assess and compare the physical fitness profile among children. Setting: The study setting comprised rural and urban primary school learners in the Eastern Cape province, South Africa. Methods: A cross-sectional study was adopted utilising a randomly selected sample of boys and girls aged 9-14 years. Physical fitness measures were assessed using the Euro-fit test battery. Some parametric tests were used for mean comparisons of the various anthropometric measurements and physical fitness characteristics across demographics. Results: The sample consisted of 870 primary school learners. The average weight and height of the sample were 39.29 ± 10.34 kg and 144.06 ± 10.81 cm, respectively, with a mean body mass index (BMI) of 18.80 ± 4.11 kg/m2. The results showed that boys reported significantly high levels of physical fitness. Sit-ups (p ≤ 0.001) and VO2 max (p ≤ 0.001) significantly increase with age, while all the physical fitness measures were significantly higher among rural-based learners. Conclusion: Rural-based learners and boys generally had better physical fitness performance than their peers. The effect of gender and place of residence should be considered when designing physical fitness interventions. Contribution: This study adds to the existing body of knowledge about the effect of demographic factors on the physical fitness profile of children, where boys and rural-based learners are reported to be more physically fit than their counterparts.

RESUMEN

The pulmonary vascular permeability index (PVPI) is a quotient of the extravascular lung water (EVLW) and the pulmonary blood volume (PBV). In acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), the alveolar-capillary membrane integrity is disrupted. The result is a disproportionate increase of EVLW compared to the PBV and, hence, an increase in PVPI. Thus, PVPI has repetitively been discussed to extend the definition of ARDS. Besides sex, the influence of other anthropometric variables on PVPI has not been studied so far. However, since it is known that EVLW depends on body height and sex, we hypothesize that PVPI depends on anthropometric variables as well. This prospective single-center observational study included 1533 TPTD measurements of 251 non-critically ill patients (50.6% men) undergoing elective neuro-, thoracic, or abdominal surgery at the Munich Clinic Bogenhausen of the Technical University of Munich. Multivariate regressions were used to measure the influence of sex, age, and body height on PVPI. In all patients, PVPI was significantly higher in women (P < 0.001), with 34.4% having a PVPI > 2 compared to 15.9% of men. Mean PVPI significantly decreased with height (P < 0.001) and age (P < 0.001). Multivariate regressions allowed the calculation of mean reference surfaces. The 95th percentile surface for PVPI was > 3 for small and young women and well above 2 for all but tall and elderly men. In patients who underwent (lung reduction) thoracic surgery, the PVPI before and after surgery did not differ significantly (P = 0.531), and post-surgical PVPI did not correlate with the amount of lung resected (P = 0.536). Hence, we conclude that PVPI may be independent of the extent of lung volume reduction. However, PVPI is heavily dependent on sex, age, and body height. Anthropometric variables thus have a significant impact on the likelihood of misclassified abnormal PVPI. This warrants further studies since an increased PVPI, e.g. in the context of an ARDS, may be overlooked if anthropometric variables are not considered. We suggest reference surfaces based on the 95th-percentile corrected for sex, age, and height as a novel approach to normalize PVPI.

Background and Objectives: The vertical dimension of occlusion's (VDO) assessment is a highly important issue in the everyday dentist's practice. Patients with unstable occlusion, lost occlusal stops, extensive tooth loss in the lateral area, or complete edentulism need a proper assessment of the VDO before the prosthetic restoration is carried out. Subjective and objective methods were used over time for the restoration of VDO. The study aimed to investigate the possible correlation between finger length, palm width and the vertical dimension of occlusion. Materials and Methods: Assessment of the VDO for 236 subjects, Romanian and French dental students, was performed using the Willis Bite Gauge. The left hand of the subjects was scanned using a flat-bed scanner, and then measurements of palm width and finger length were carried out for each subject. Comparison between VDO values and finger length/palm width was conducted using one-way ANOVA and Student t-Test. Results: Higher VDO average values were found in French subjects compared with Romanian students. The same results were found according to gender; in both female and male subjects, lower values of VDO were found in the Romanian group. Higher values were obtained for women within each group when comparing to men. Statistically significant correlations of the analyzed parameters and VDO values were found. Higher statistical correlations of the studied variables were found for men compared to women in both groups. The highest statistical correlation was obtained between the VDO and the palm width measured at the fingerbase, followed by the middle finger length. Conclusions: The results showed the highest statistical correlation between the vertical dimension of occlusion and the palm width measured at the fingers' base. Statistical correlations were also found between the VDO and the middle finger length. Simple formulas using finger length/palm width can be used for a rapid VDO determination.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a multifaceted endocrine disorder with profound implications for the reproductive and metabolic health of women. The utilization of anthropometric measures in the diagnosis and management of PCOS has gained increasing attention due to their practicality and predictive capacity for associated conditions such as obesity and insulin resistance. This review rigorously explores the application of various anthropometric indices, including body mass index, waist-to-hip ratio, and advanced metrics such as the body shape index and body roundness index, wrist circumference, neck circumference. These indices offer critical insights into body fat distribution and its association with the metabolic and hormonal perturbations characteristic of PCOS. The review underscores the necessity of addressing obesity, a prevalent comorbidity in PCOS, through lifestyle modifications and personalized therapeutic approaches. By incorporating anthropometric evaluations into routine clinical practice, healthcare professionals can enhance diagnostic precision, optimize treatment strategies, and ultimately improve patient outcomes. This integrative approach not only facilitates the management of the metabolic challenges inherent in PCOS but also contributes to the development of more individualized therapeutic interventions, thereby enhancing the overall quality of life for women affected by PCOS.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Obesity and overweight have become growing health-related issues worldwide, which also applies to Poland. Excess fat mass is associated with an increased risk of metabolic and non-metabolic complications. The aim of our pre-post-designed study was to assess the effect of behavioral intervention on body weight, fat mass and anthropometric and metabolic parameters in obese and overweight individuals. METHODS: The study included one hundred people (85 women) with excess fat mass who voluntarily declared their willingness to participate in the weight-loss program consisted of 12 weeks of the DASH diet combined with regular, supervised physical activity. Anthropometric measurements and laboratory tests were performed in all study participants, and anthropometric and metabolic indices were calculated at baseline and after three months of treatment. RESULTS: Body weight decreased significantly by 5.63 ± 4.03 kg, BMI by 2.06 ± 1.44 kg/m2, waist circumference by 5.6 ± 3.7 cm, fat mass from 40.04 ± 6.90 to 36.56 ± 7.07% and uric acid level by 16.0 ± 41.6 µmol/L (p < 0.001 in all cases). We also found an improvement in lipid profile and anthropometric and metabolic indices, except for HDL cholesterol and plasma glucose levels. CONCLUSIONS: The effect of the DASH diet and supervised physical activity was beneficial regardless of age, sex and the presence of hypertension or dysglycemia at baseline. The implementation of a healthy lifestyle was associated with a significant improvement in anthropometric and metabolic parameters, which, if continued, may reduce the risk of unfavorable health-related outcomes in the future.

Background: The physical health of adolescents is crucial for the prosperity and sustainable development of a nation. Developing specific growth standards is essential for prioritizing the wellbeing of the youth of Pakistan. This study aimed to establish normative standards for height, weight, and body mass index (BMI) among 12- to 16-year-olds in South Punjab, facilitating accurate health assessments and tailored interventions. Method: This study utilized a cross-sectional design and stratified random sampling to select 2,970 adolescents (49.73% boys and 50.26% girls) aged 12-16 years from South Punjab, Pakistan. Anthropometric measurements, including height, weight, and BMI, were collected. The data were stratified by age and sex, and smoothed percentile curves were computed using the LMS method, which incorporates the L (γ-lambda), M (µ-mu), and S (δ-sigma) parameters. The results were compared to international references to provide a comprehensive analysis. Results: The results highlight sex-specific trends in anthropometric indicators among adolescents. Boys exhibited higher mean values in height (160.50 ± 11.50 cm), weight (45.02 ± 9.78 kg), and BMI (17.30 ± 2.41) than girls (158.57 ± 9.34 cm, 41.00 ± 7.89 kg, and 16.29 ± 2.82, respectively). Growth patterns indicate boys grow faster in height and weight between ages 12 and 14, whereas girls show slower annual increases. Comparative analysis with international standards reveals that boys' height and weight were generally lower than international medians (P50th), whereas girls' height was comparable or higher. BMI values for both sexes were lower than international norms, reflecting unique regional growth patterns. Conclusion: This research establishes updated age- and sex-specific normative reference standards for adolescents in South Punjab, Pakistan. The study revealed that Pakistani adolescent boys exhibit higher mean values in height, weight, and BMI than girls, with faster growth rates between ages 12 and 14. Compared to international standards, Pakistani adolescents show lower BMI values, highlighting unique regional growth patterns. These standards have practical applications in screening, monitoring, and health strategy planning, contributing to efforts to promote a healthier future for the population. Future studies are recommended to utilize these local growth references for health surveillance and treatment in the local population.

BACKGROUND: Numerous studies have revealed the role of low dietary calcium-to-phosphorous ratio and low bone health. However, its possible role in visceral adiposity, skeletal muscle mass (SMM), and metabolic parameters has not been investigated before. Therefore, the aim of the current cross-sectional study was to evaluate the relation between dietary calcium-to-phosphorous ratio, metabolic risk factors, SMM, and visceral fat area (VFA) among physically active young individuals. METHODS: In the current study, the sample was composed of 391 healthy young individuals (e.g., 205 men and 186 women), aged between 20 and 35 years old, who were engaged in moderate physical activity for at least 4 hr per week and were recruited thorough cluster sampling from seven sport clubs. Anthropometric measurements were performed, and VFA and SMM index (SMI) were calculated. Biochemical assays were also performed by standard kits. Data were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance, analysis of co-variance, and multinomial logistic regression analysis using SPSS software. RESULTS: Those in the fourth quartile of dietary calcium-to-phosphorous ratio were more likely to have lower VFA (odds ratio [OR] = 0.98; 95% confidence interval [CI] [0.97, 0.99]; p = .023) and a nonsignificantly higher SMI (OR = 1.15; 95% CI [0.99, 1.34]; p = .058) after adjustment for the effects of confounders (e.g., age, gender, body mass index, physical activity level, dietary energy intake). Also, being in the third quartile of dietary calcium-to-phosphorous ratio made the subjects more susceptible to have lower insulin concentration (OR = 0.99; 95% CI [0.88, 0.93]; p = .026) in the adjusted model. CONCLUSION: The findings of the current study revealed that a higher dietary calcium-to-phosphorous ratio in the habitual diet was negatively associated with visceral adiposity and insulin concentrations and higher SMM among physically active young individuals. Further interventional studies are required to confer causality that was not inferable in the current study because of cross-sectional design.
