RESUMEN

The accumulation of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) has raised public awareness due to harmful contamination to both human and marine creatures. This study was designed to determine the concentration of copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), cadmium (Cd), and nickel (Ni) in the intestine, kidney, muscle, gill, and liver tissues of local commercial edible fish, fourfinger threadfin (Eleutheronema tetradactylum), and black pomfret (Parastromateus niger) collected from Morib (M) and Kuala Selangor (KS). Among the studied PTEs, Cu and Zn were essential elements to regulate body metabolism with certain dosages required while Cd and Ni were considered as non-essential elements that posed chronic and carcinogenic risk. The concentration of PTEs in fish tissue samples was analyzed using flame atomic absorption spectrometry (F-AAS). By comparing the concentration of PTEs in fish tissues as a bioindicator, the environmental risk of Morib was more serious than Kuala Selangor because both fish species collected from Morib resulted in a higher PTEs concentration. For an average 62 kg adult with a fish ingestion rate (FIR) of 0.16 kg/person/day in Malaysia, the estimated weekly intake (EWI) of Cd from the consumption of E. tetradactylum (M: 0.0135 mg/kg; KS: 0.0134 mg/kg) and P. niger (M: 0.0140 mg/kg; KS: 0.0132 mg/kg) had exceeded the provisional tolerable weekly intake (Cd: 0.007 mg/kg) established by the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) and oral reference dose (ORD) values of Cd (0.001 mg/kg/day) as provided by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) regional screening level, thus it posed chronic risks for daily basis consumption. Besides, the value of the carcinogenic risk of Cd (0.7-3 to 0.8-3) and Ni (0.5-3 to 0.6-3) were in between the acceptable range (10-6 to 10-4) of the health index that indicates a relatively low possibility cancer occurrence to the consumers in both Morib and Kuala Selangor. This study recommended FIR to be 0.80 kg/person/day to reduce the possibility of posing chronic and carcinogenic risks while at the same time obtaining the essential nutrients from the fish.

In the present study, the status of water quality, environmental contamination in the lower stretch of Subarnarekha River with respect to potentially toxic elements (PTEs), its seasonal distribution, and ecotoxicological health impacts were investigated. For this purpose, a combination of indexing approaches and geospatial methods was used. The estimated water quality index (WQI) has shown that the river water falls under "moderate to very poor" category during the pre-monsoon and "moderate to poor" category in the post-monsoon season. The abundance of PTEs (Pb, Cu, Ni, Cd, Fe, and Cr) was on the higher side during the pre-monsoon in comparison with the post-monsoon season. The results of contamination index (Cd) and heavy metal evaluation index (HEI) explain that Subarnarekha River has low-to-moderate levels of contamination with PTEs in the majority of sampling sites. However, HPI indicated that the river water is moderate-to-highly contaminated with PTEs in both seasons. Principal component analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis (CA) reveal that anthropogenic sources are prime contributors to PTEs contamination in Subarnarekha River. The potential non-cancerous health concerns for child and adults due to Cr and Pb in some sampling stations along the river stretch have been observed. The carcinogenic risk (CR) has been established for Cr, Pb, and Cd in Subarnarekha River with Cr (> 10-4) as the most unsafe element. Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) indicates a high risk of cancer hazards due to Cr (values > 1E-04) in present as well as future for both child and adults.

The heavy metals namely Fe, As, Cu, Cd, and Pb were investigated in two marine fishes silver pomfret (Pampus argentus) and torpedo scad (Megalaspis cordyla), and three seafoods sibogae squid (Loligo sibogae), Indian white prawn (Fenneropenaeus indicus), and mud crab (Scylla serrata) by using inductively coupled plasma spectrophotometer (ICP-MS) from two renowned fish harvesting coastal area of Malaysia named as Kedah and Selangor. Among the target heavy metals, highest mean concentration of As and Fe were found in Scylla serrata (72.14±7.77 µg/g) in Kedah and Megalaspis cordyla (149.40±2.15 µg/g) in Selangor. Pearson's correlation results showed As-Fe-Cd-Cu originated from the same source. Maximum estimated daily intake (EDI) values of Scylla serrata were found 175.25 µg/g/day and 100.81 µg/g/day for child in both Kedah and Selangor areas respectively. Hazard quotient (HQ) and hazard index (HI) results revealed that local consumers of Kedah and Selangor will face high chronic risk if they consume Scylla serrata, Fenneropenaeus indicus, and Megalaspis cordyla on regular basis in their diet. Carcinogenic risk results suggested that all the studied species pose very high risk of cancer occurrences to the consumers in both areas. Therefore, it could be recommended that consumers should be aware when they are consuming these marine species since they can pose serious health risk associated with prolonged consumption.
