RESUMEN

AIM: to estimate the level of metallic chemical elements in the population living in the Steel company vicinity in Santa Cruz, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; and estimate the association between exposure to the Steel company and the blood metals concentrations patterns. METHOD: A cross-sectional study was carried out on 463 individuals aged 18+ years old residing 1+ years in the Steel company vicinity. Mg, Be, Co, Ba, Ni, Cd, Al, and Pb were assessed in blood by DRC-ICP-MS. Metallic chemical element concentration patterns were obtained by exploratory factor analysis in the studied population. Exposure was set as the distance (Km) from each participant's residence to the Steel company in Santa Cruz, georeferenced by GPS. The outcome was set as the positive factor loadings in the factor analysis, including Mg and Be (Factor-1), Co, Ba, and Ni (Factor-2), Cd, Al, and Pb (Factor-4). Crude and adjusted OR, and their respective 95 %CI, were estimated to explore associations between independent variables and the exposures to metallic elements positively associated with the factors using polychotomous logistic regression. RESULTS: A reduction of 19 % was found between each km distance from the residence and the Steel company and P50 concentration of Cd, Al, and Pb (ORP50=0.81; 95 %CI:0.67-0.97), after adjusting by age, sex, and smoking. No statistically significant associations were observed for the distance from residences and the Steel company, after adjusting for age, gender, having a domestic vegetable garden and chewing gum for Mg and Be concentrations (Factor-1) (ORP50=0.84; 95 %CI:0.70-1.01; ORP75=1.10; 95 %CI:0.91-1.34); nor for Co, Ba and Ni (Factor-2) blood concentrations(ORP50=1.10; 95 %CI:0.91-1.33; ORP75=1.03; 95 %CI:0.84-1.26), in the adjusted analysis. CONCLUSIONS: For each Km distance from residences to the Steel company, a 19 % reduction in the risk of Cd, Al, and Pb blood concentration was observed in the population living in Santa Cruz, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

RESUMEN

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a chronic disease, which often develops in older people, but this is not the rule. AMD pathogenesis changes include the anatomical and functional complex. As a result of damage, it occurs, in the retina and macula, among other areas. These changes may lead to partial or total loss of vision. This disease can occur in two clinical forms, i.e., dry (progression is slowly and gradually) and exudative (wet, progression is acute and severe), which usually started as dry form. A coexistence of both forms is possible. AMD etiology is not fully understood. Extensive genetic studies have shown that this disease is multifactorial and that genetic determinants, along with environmental and metabolic-functional factors, are important risk factors. This article reviews the impact of heavy metals, macro- and microelements, and genetic factors on the development of AMD. We present the current state of knowledge about the influence of environmental factors and genetic determinants on the progression of AMD in the confrontation with our own research conducted on the Polish population from Kuyavian-Pomeranian and Lubusz Regions. Our research is concentrated on showing how polluted environments of large agglomerations affects the development of AMD. In addition to confirming heavy metal accumulation, the growth of risk of acute phase factors and polymorphism in the genetic material in AMD development, it will also help in the detection of new markers of this disease. This will lead to a better understanding of the etiology of AMD and will help to establish prevention and early treatment.

The water treatment depends exclusively on the identification of residues containing toxic chemical elements accumulated in NPs (nanoparticles), and ultrafine particles sourced from waste piles located at old, abandoned sulfuric acid factories containing phosphogypsum requires global attention. The general objective of this study is to quantify and analyze the hazardous chemical elements present in the leachate of waste from deactivated sulfuric acid factories, coupled in NPs and ultrafine particles, in the port region of the city of Imbituba, Santa Catarina, Brazil. Samples were collected in 2020, 2021, and 2022. Corresponding images from the Sentinel-3B OLCI satellite, taken in the same general vicinity, detected the levels of absorption coefficient of Detritus and Gelbstoff (ADG443_NN) in 443 m-1, chlorophyll-a (CHL_NN (m-3)), and total suspended matter (TSM_NN (g m-3) at 72 points on the marine coast of the port region. The results of inductively coupled plasma atomic-emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) demonstrate that the leaching occurring in waste piles at the port area of Imbituba was the likely source of hazardous chemical elements (e.g., Mg, Sr, Nd, and Pr) in the environment. These leachates were formed due to the presence of coal pyrite and Fe-acid sulfates in said waste piles. The mobility of hazardous chemical elements potentiates changes in the marine ecosystem, in relation to ADG443_NN (m-1), CHL_NN (m-3), and TSM NN (g m-3), with values greater than 20 g m-3 found in 2021 and 2022. This indicated changes in the natural conditions of the marine ecosystem up to 30 km from the coast in the Atlantic Ocean, justifying public initiatives for water treatment on a global scale.

Infant formula intake is recommended to ensure comprehensive nutritional and caloric fulfillment when exclusive breastfeeding is not possible. However, similarly to breast milk, infant formulas may also contain pollutants capable of inducing endocrine-disrupting and neurotoxic effects. Thus, considering the sensitivity of their developing physiological systems and that infants have heightened susceptibility to environmental influences, this study was aimed at assessing the contents of essential elements, and inorganic and organic pollutants in infant formulas marketed in Brazil. Additionally, health risk assessments for selected contaminants were also performed. Measured contents of essential elements (Ca, Fe, Mg, Mn, Cu, Se, and Zn) were congruent with label information. Nevertheless, some toxic elements (Pb, Cd, As, Ni, and Al) were also detected. Notably, in the upper-bound scenario, Pb and Cd surpassed established threshold values when comparing the estimated daily intake (EDI) and tolerable daily intake (TDI - 3.57 and 0.36 µg/kg bw, respectively). Bisphenol P (BPP) and benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP) were frequently detected (84 % detection rate both) with elevated contents (BPP median = 4.28 ng/g and BBP median = 0.24 ng/g). Furthermore, a positive correlation (0.41) was observed between BPP and BBP, implying a potential co-occurrence within packaging materials. Methyl-paraben also correlated positively with BBP (0.57), showing a detection rate of 53 %. The cumulative PBDE contents ranged from 0.33 to 1.62 ng/g, with BDE-154 and BDE-47 the dominant congeners. When comparing EDI values with TDIs, all organic pollutants remained below the thresholds across all exposure scenarios. Moreover, non-carcinogenic risks were below the threshold (HQ > 1) when dividing the EDIs by the respective reference doses for chronic exposure. While the current findings may suggest that infant formula intake poses no immediate risk in terms of the evaluated chemicals, it remains imperative to conduct further research to safeguard the health of infants considering other chemicals, as well as their potential cumulative effects.

By choosing discriminant variables as concentrations of significant chemicals, this study identified types of mature people bioelement pictures. The inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry/mass spectrometry method was used to measure Ca, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Na, P and Zn concentrations in hair samples of 237 residents of Magadan aged 36-94. By cluster and discriminant analysis the concentrations of Ca, Mg, Mn and Zn were reliably (p=0,001) set as classifying parameters, which made it possible to divide the examinees into three groups based on the following types of bioelement status: regional norm (81,97% of the surveyed subjects), excess (16,87%) and hyper excess (0,84%). The status of regional norm proved to be mostly common in all the studied ages, regardless of gender. We could see the incidence of this bioelement type is growing to the extreme old age being characteristic of the changing element status as normal bioelement ageing. The status of hyper excess was only exhibited by women at their second adulthood. The status of bioelement excess is more common in women who reduce the chance of developing this condition from 33,9 to 4,8% as they move from second adulthood to senile age.

BACKGROUND: The infant population is particularly sensitive, so the risk posed by their diet must be analyzed. The aims of the present study were (i) to determine the contents of 38 elements in 159 samples of ready-to-eat baby food sold in Spain and (ii) to estimate the dietary intakes and risk assessments of these elements in name brands and store brands in infants ranging between 6 and 12 months of age. METHODS: A list of essential, non-essential/toxic elements, rare earth elements (REEs), and other hi-tech-related elements that are currently considered as emerging environmental pollutants were measured in ready-to-eat baby foods by ICP-MS. RESULTS: Fish purees showed the highest concentrations of mercury (28.1 ng/g) and arsenic (346.2 ng/g). The levels of manganese, molybdenum, and chromium exceed the adequate intake, being higher in the case of store brands. The acute hazard index was above 1 for molybdenum and manganese. A risky consumption of thallium and mercury was observed, being higher among name brands. The risk associated with the consumption of REEs was low, although its presence should be highlighted. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first time that these chemical elements have been measured in ready-to-eat purees for babies. The presence of some of them, such as mercury, should be sufficient to monitor the levels of these contaminants in food intended for such a sensitive population as children.

The rapid and accurate diagnosis of cancer is an important topic in clinical medicine. In the present work, an innovative method based on laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) combined with machine learning was developed to distinguish and classify different tumor cell lines. The LIBS spectra of cells were first acquired. Then the spectral pre-processing was performed as well as detailed optimization to improve the classification accuracy. After that, the convolutional neural network (CNN), support vector machine (SVM), and K-nearest neighbors were further compared for the optimized classification ability of tumor cells. Both the CNN algorithm and SVM algorithm have achieved impressive discrimination performances for tumor cells distinguishing, with an accuracy of 97.72%. The results show that the heterogeneity of elements in tumor cells plays an important role in distinguishing the cells. It also means that the LIBS technique can be used as a fast classification method for classifying tumor cells.

Sports nutrition supplementation is a widespread practice. Whey protein supplements contribute not only to protein intake but also to dietary exposure to minerals. The labelling present provides the percentage of protein and rarely refers to other components, such as potentially toxic elements such as B, Cu, Mo, Zn, and V that present tolerable upper intake levels set by the European Food Safety Authority. The percentage of protein declared on supplement labelling was checked using the Kjeldahl method, and the levels of Ca, Mg, K, Na, Ba, B, Co, Cu, Cr, Sr, Fe, Li, Mn, Mo, Ni, V, Zn, and Al were analyzed by ICP-OES with the aim of characterizing the protein and mineral contents of isolate and concentrate whey protein supplements representative of the European market. The protein content was 70.9% (18-92.3%) and statistically significant differences were observed between the declared and real protein percentages. Among the minerals, K (4689.10 mg/kg) and Ca (3811.27 mg/kg) presented the highest levels, whereas Co (0.07 mg/kg) and V (0.04 mg/kg) showed the lowest levels. It was concluded that the quality and safety of these products needs to be monitored and regulated. A high degree of non-compliance with labelling claims was detected. Furthermore, the contributions to the recommended and tolerable intakes among regular consumers need to be assessed.

Geochemical background and baseline values are important parameters for understanding the geochemical characteristics of soil elements, but the research degree of these two parameters is lacking in Hebei Province. Therefore, data from the multi-purpose regional geochemical survey and land quality geochemical assessment in Hebei Province from 2004 to 2018 were collected, covering approximately 71% of the land area of the whole province. Based on the data of surface soil and deep soil, scientific and robust methods including median value and median absolute deviation were used to calculate the geochemical background values, geochemical baseline values, as well as variation ranges of 54 indexes (Ag, Al2O3, As, Au, B, Ba, Be, Bi, Br, CaO, Cd, Ce, Cl, Co, Cr, Cu, F, Fe2O3, Ga, Ge, Hg, I, K2O, La, Li, MgO, Mn, Mo, N, Na2O, Nb, Ni, P, Pb, pH, Rb, S, Sb, Sc, Se, SiO2, Sn, Sr, Th, Ti, Tl, U, V, W, Y, Zn, Zr, total carbon (TC), and organic carbon (Corg)) in Hebei Province and 11 prefecture-level cities. The change rate in geochemical background for each index was also calculated. The results showed that the geochemical background and baseline values of most soil chemical elements in Hebei Province were lower than those nationwide, but the values of Ba, Br, Cl, MgO, Na2O, P, pH, S, Sr, and TC were higher, with CaO being the highest. Compared with those in north China, there was no significant difference in the geochemical background and baseline values for the 54 indexes, with the ratios of 0.83-1.17 and 0.79-1.19, respectively. Significant changes in the geochemical background for Corg, Hg, N, P, S, and Se were observed in Hebei Province, indicating that these indexes were greatly influenced by human factors. Preliminary analysis suggests that coal burning emissions and agricultural chemical use were two very important inducing factors.

Background: Hair chemical elements reflect physical condition over time. Collection, transporting, and storing hair is more convenient than handling blood. Hair elements show higher levels for a long time, which allows for more accurate and sensitive results than using blood. Studies explored the relationships between elements and age, without full consideration of nutritional status, in older people. This study explored the relationships between hair chemical elements and Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI) in oldest-old and centenarian populations to provide an updated reference for nutritional evaluation of older people. Methods: A total of 152 participants over 80 years old underwent home interviews and physical examinations. An inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer was used to detect hair chemical elements. Results: Women accounted for 77.0% of participants. Women had lower levels of zinc, and higher levels of selenium, manganese, lead, iron, and copper than men (P<0.05 for all). Ninety-two participants formed the 80-99 year group, and 60 participants formed the 100+ year group. Centenarians had lower levels of selenium, lead, iron, and copper than those aged 80-99 years (P<0.05 for all). Hair selenium levels were positively associated with GNRI (odds ratio: 11.55, 95% confidence interval: 3.42-19.68, P < 0.05) based on a multivariate linear regression analysis. Other chemical elements had no significant associations with GNRI based on a multivariate linear regression analysis. Conclusion: Chemical elements and nutrient status were altered based on age and gender, and an association existed between hair selenium and nutritional status in older people. Chemical elements may influence and indicate nutritional status in older people.

Several heavy metals and other chemical elements are natural components of the Earth's crust and their properties and toxicity have been recognized for thousands of years. Moreover, their use in industries presents a major source of environmental and occupational pollution. Therefore, this ubiquity in daily life may result in several potential exposures coming from natural sources (e.g., through food and water contamination), industrial processes, and commercial products, among others. The toxicity of most chemical elements of the periodic table accrues from their highly reactive nature, resulting in the formation of complexes with intracellular compounds that impair cellular pathways, leading to dysfunction, necrosis, and apoptosis. Nervous, gastrointestinal, hematopoietic, renal, and dermatological systems are the main targets. This manuscript aims to collect the clinical and forensic signs related to poisoning from heavy metals, such as thallium, lead, copper, mercury, iron, cadmium, and bismuth, as well as other chemical elements such as arsenic, selenium, and fluorine. Furthermore, their main sources of occupational and environmental exposure are highlighted in this review. The importance of rapid recognition is related to the fact that, through a high degree of suspicion, the clinician could rapidly initiate treatment even before the toxicological results are available, which can make a huge difference in these patients' outcomes.

Bone grafting is commonly used as a treatment to repair bone defects. However, its use is challenged by the presence of medical conditions that weaken the bone, like osteoporosis. Calcium phosphate cement (CPC) is used to restore bone defects, and it is commonly available as a bioabsorbable cement paste. However, its use in clinical settings is limited by inadequate mechanical strength, inferior anti-washout characteristics, and poor osteogenic activity. There have been attempts to overcome these shortcomings by adding various natural or synthetic materials as enhancers to CPC. This review summarises the current evidence on the physical, mechanical, and biological properties of CPC after doping with synthetic materials. The incorporation of CPC with polymers, biomimetic materials, chemical elements/compounds, and combination with two or more synthetic materials showed improvement in biocompatibility, bioactivity, anti-washout properties, and mechanical strength. However, the mechanical property of CPC doped with trimethyl chitosan or strontium was decreased. In conclusion, doping of synthetic materials enhances the osteogenic features of pure CPC. The positive findings from in vitro and in vivo studies await further validation on the efficacy of these reinforced CPC composites in clinical settings.

Gamma glutamyl transferase (GGT) is related to oxidative stress and an indicator for liver damage. We investigated the association between air pollution and GGT in a large Austrian cohort (N = 116,109) to better understand how air pollution affects human health. Data come from voluntary prevention visits that were routinely collected within the Vorarlberg Health Monitoring and Prevention Program (VHM&PP). Recruitment was ongoing from 1985 to 2005. Blood was drawn and GGT measured centralized in two laboratories. Land use regression models were applied to estimate individuals' exposure at their home address for particulate matter (PM) with a diameter of <2.5 µm (PM2.5), <10 µm (PM10), fraction between 10 µm and 2.5 µm (PMcoarse), as well as PM2.5 absorbance (PM2.5abs), NO2, NOx and eight components of PM. Linear regression models, adjusting for relevant individual and community-level confounders were calculated. The study population was 56 % female with a mean age of 42 years and mean GGT was 19.0 units. Individual PM2.5 and NO2 exposures were essentially below European limit values of 25 and 40 µg/m3, respectively, with means of 13.58 µg/m3 for PM2.5 and 19.93 µg/m3 for NO2. Positive associations were observed for PM2.5, PM10, PM2.5abs, NO2, NOx, and Cu, K, S in PM2.5 and PM10 fractions and Zn mainly in PM2.5 fraction. The strongest association per interquartile range observed was an increase of serum GGT concentration by 1.40 % (95 %-CI: 0.85 %; 1.95 %) per 45.7 ng/m3 S in PM2.5. Associations were robust to adjustments for other biomarkers, in two-pollutant models and the subset with a stable residential history. We found that long-term exposure to air pollution (PM2.5, PM10, PM2.5abs, NO2, NOx) as well as certain elements, were positively associated with baseline GGT levels. The elements associated suggest a role of traffic emissions, long range transport and wood burning.

There remains a lack of systematic understanding of burn-through instability, which also restricts the development of evaluation criteria. Based on the designed test device, the dynamic evolution behavior and failure mechanism of burn-through instability were investigated by combining in-situ CCD observation and failure analysis. In the initial stage of burn-through instability, the penetrating defect initiated beneath the molten pool bulge and propagated toward the arc. Finally, the weld centerline cracks or pinholes contributed to the pipeline failure. Based on in-situ observation, the burn-through pinhole was found to be forming in the overheating zone. Cracks and pinholes were found simultaneously in the burn-through instability zone and played an essential role in the burn-through instability. It could be concluded that a major burn-through hole was mainly developed from the fusion line to the inner wall surface along the wall thickness. According to the failure behavior and phenomena, the in-service burn-through instability area was divided into four parts, which were the damage failure (DF) zone, burn-through instability (BTI) zone, propagation (P) zone, and secondary burn-through zone (BT2). The failure mechanisms of the damage failure (DF) zone and burn-through instability (BTI) zone were significantly affected by the high temperature and plastic strain. The failure behavior of the propagation (P) zone was influenced considerably by the DF and BTI zones. The secondary burn-through zone was mainly affected by the high temperature. The uneven distribution of chemical elements showed an important influence on defect initiation.

Particle induced X-ray emission (PIXE) and particle induced γ-ray emission (PIGE) techniques were employed to perform elemental analysis in four milk samples of local domestic animals, namely sheep, caw, camel and goat. Additionally, Rutherford backscattering (RBS) spectra were acquired simultaneously with PIXE and PIGE to determine matrix elements. Milk samples were prepared in a simple dried base following freeze drying process. Optimization of PIXE/PIGE/RBS experimental conditions as well as data acquisition and analysis procedures were carefully addressed. Verification study was performed relying on the analysis of both IAEA-11 and IAEA-153 reference materials. Accuracies of ±5-10% together with relative standard deviations of less than 15% were mostly reported. Chemical element concentrations of 11 elements were determined, namely Na, Mg, P, S, Cl, K, Ca, Zn, Br, Rb and Sr. Obtained element concentration values were mostly in the range 1000-10000 µg/g for major elements and 5-100 µg/g for trace elements. No significant changes in elemental concentration differences for both trace and major elements were noticed in the four different milk samples. The contribution of the elements in these milk samples to the dietary recommended intakes (DRI) has been evaluated. Advantages of applying multiple ion beam analysis techniques have been discussed.

BACKGROUND: Early-stage detection of subclinical obesity-driven systemic changes is a challenging area of medical diagnostics, where the most popular existing measures - such as body mass index - BMI - often fall short of providing a realistic estimate of adiposity and, therefore, of ongoing pathologies at the systemic, tissue and cellular level. In the quest for identifying new more robust diagnostic markers, whole-organ analysis of chemical elements is a promising approach for identifying candidate proxies of obesity status in the system. METHODS: Total Reflection X-ray fluorescence (TXRF) coupled with biochemical assays, chemometrics and statistical validation was used as a new integrated pipeline for marker identification in external ear samples of obese animals. The specimens were taken from obese animals fed a high calorie diet as well as from lean intact animals fed a standard diet. RESULTS: The most significant differences in the content of K, Fe, Br, and Rb between the studied groups of the animals were identified. However, with the methodology applied Rb was found the most robust biochemical discriminator of early-stage obesity effects, as validated by the logistic regression model. We observed no relationship between the levels of the elements consumed by the animals and their apparent content in the earlobe tissue samples. CONCLUSIONS: Our preliminary study confirms that obesity alters tissue trace metal metabolism and shows the proposed new approach as an accurate and reliable methodology for detecting tissue elemental obesity-related alterations. GENERAL SIGNIFICANCE: This result can be of practical significance for designing new point-of-care systems for obesity screening tests, taking advantage of direct/indirect Rb measurements.

Several approaches to assess the authenticity of food products have been developed, given that fraudulent products may impact consumers' confidence, affect commercial trades and lead to health risks. This paper proposes an approach to identify the chemical elements that optimally discriminate rice samples according to their producing region in the South of Brazil, the largest rice producer outside Asia. A combinatorial procedure on the concentration of 26 elements determined using inductively coupled mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and liquid chromatography hyphenated with ICP-MS from 640 rice samples was coupled with Support Vector Machine. The assessed elements included nonmetal and metal elements of 3 types of rice collected from 5 rice-producing regions. The framework selected Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, Ni, Mo, Cd, Cs, As, Rb, Se, and iAs as the most informative elements for tracking samples' origin. The concentration of such elements is strongly affected by fertilization procedures and soil composition.

Speciation analysis is a relevant topic since the (eco)toxicity, bioavailability, bio (geo)chemical cycles, and mobility of a given element depend on its chemical forms (oxidation state, organic ligands, etc.). The reliability of analytical results for chemical species of elements depends mostly on the maintaining of their stability during the sample pretreatment step and on the selectivity of further separation step. Solid-phase extraction (SPE) is a matter of choice as the most suitable and widely used procedure for both enrichment of chemical species of elements and their separation. The features of sorbent material are of great importance to ensure extraction efficiency from one side and selectivity from the other side of the SPE procedure. This review presents an update on the application of polymeric materials in solid-phase extraction used in nonchromatographic methods for speciation analysis.

Bipolar Disorder (BD) is a severe recurrent affective mood disorder characterized by a wide range of lifelong mood swings, varying between depressive and manic states. BD affects more than 1% of the world's population irrespective of nationality, ethnic origin, or socioeconomic status and is one of the main causes of disability among young people, leading to cognitive and functional impairment and raised mortality, particularly death by suicide. Trace elements play a vital role in many biochemical and physiological processes. Compelling evidence shows that element toxicity might play a crucial role in the onset and progression of neurodegenerative disorders, but their involvement in mood disorders has been scarcely studied. In the present investigation, we determined the concentration of 26 elements in the serum of BD patients before and after treatment and in postmortem brain samples from BD patients and compared them with matched controls. The only element that was reduced significantly in the serum following treatment was vanadium (V). Furthermore, the concentration of Al, B, Cu, K, Mg and V were significantly lower in the pre-frontal cortex of BD patients compared with those of the controls. A comparison of Spearman's rank correlation coefficients between the elements in the serum and brain of BD patients and control groups pointed to boron and aluminum as being involved in the disease. These results suggest that there is a disturbance in the elements' homeostasis and the inter-elements' relationship in the brain of BD patients and advocate a thorough examination of the possible involvement of chemical elements in different stages of the disease.

To evaluate the prospects of using Baikal endemic sponges as bioindicators of chemical elements pollution, the elemental composition of sponges, water and substrate samples, collected in two areas with different levels of anthropogenic loading of the Baikal Lake, was determined using two analytical techniques. The content of Cl, Ca, V, Zn, As, Se, Ba, Cd, and Cu in the sponges collected in Listvennichny Bay was significantly higher than in Bolshye Koty Bay. The values of the pollution indices point at the slight to moderate pollution of the substrates. According to the bioaccumulation factor values, sponges accumulate mainly Cd, Cu and Br from the substrate, and the main part of the elements from water. The distribution of elements longwise the sponges and their intraspecific variation were evaluated. It was shown that Lubomirskia baikalensis sponges were suitable bioindicators to assess the pollution of Lake Baikal.
