INTRODUCTION: Cancer cachexia is a clinical condition characterized by recognizable "sickness behaviors" accompanied by loss of lean body tissue. The Global Leadership on Malnutrition (GLIM) has proposed phenotypic (unintentional weight loss, low body mass index and low muscle mass) and aetiologic (reduced food intake and inflammation or disease burden) diagnostic criteria. Recent work has suggested serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) might represent a 3rd aetiologic criteria. Little is known of its relationship with GLIM. A systematic review and meta-analysis of their comparative prognostic value and association was performed. METHODS: A search of electronic databases (PubMed, Medline, Ovid, Cochrane) up to February 2023 was used to identify studies that compared the prognostic value of LDH and components of the GLIM criteria in cancer. An analysis of the relationship between LDH and the components of GLIM was undertaken where this data was available. RevMan 5.4.1 was used to perform a meta-analysis for each diagnostic criteria that had 3 or more studies which reported hazard ratios with a 95 per cent confidence interval for overall survival (OS). RESULTS: A total of 119 studies were reviewed. Advanced lung cancer was the most studied population. Included in the meta-analysis were 6 studies (n=2165) on LDH and weight loss, 17 studies (n=7540) on LDH and low BMI, 5 studies (n=758) on LDH and low muscle mass, 0 studies on LDH and food intake and 93 studies (n=32,190) on LDH and inflammation. There was a significant association between elevated serum LDH and each of low BMI (OR 1.39, 1.09 - 1.77; p=0.008), elevated NLR (OR 2.04, 1.57 - 2.65; p<0.00001) and elevated CRP (OR 2.58, 1.81 - 3.67; p<0.00001). There was no association between elevated serum LDH and low muscle mass. Only one study presented data on the association between LDH and unintentional weight loss. Elevated LDH showed a comparative OS (HR 1.86, 1.57 - 2.07; p<0.00001) to unintentional weight loss (HR 1.57, 1.23 - 1.99; p=0.0002) and had a similar OS (HR 2.00, 1.70 - 2.34; p<0.00001) to low BMI (HR 1.57, 1.29-2.90; p<0.0001). LDH also showed an OS (HR 2.25, 1.76 - 2.87; p<0.00001) congruous with low muscle mass (HR 1.93, 1.14 - 3.27; p=0.01) and again, LDH conferred as poor an OS (HR 1.77, 1.64-1.90; p<0.00001) as elevated NLR (HR 1.61, 1.48 - 1.77; p<0.00001) or CRP (HR 1.55, 1.43 - 1.69; p<0.00001). CONCLUSION: Current literature suggests elevated serum LDH is associated with inflammation in cancer (an aetiologic GLIM criterion), however more work is required to establish the relationship between LDH and the phenotypic components of GLIM. Additionally, elevated serum LDH appears to be a comparative prognosticator of overall survival in cancer when compared to the GLIM criteria.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Cell-free and concentrated ascites reinfusion therapy (CART) was established for refractory ascites and renovated CART (Keisuke Matsusaki (KM) -CART) has been recently developed especially for malignant ascites; however, the actual clinical efficacy of KM-CART has been rarely reported. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We performed 226 KM-CART procedures in 104 patients with malignant ascites in three hospitals from August 2013 to September 2018. Medical records were retrospectively reviewed for ascites data, related complications, symptoms before and after each CART and prognosis after the first CART. The modified Glasgow Prognostic Score (mGPS) was reviewed before every procedure, as an indicator of nutritional status. RESULTS: Pancreatic cancer was the most common indication for the KM-CART procedure, followed by gastric cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma, ovarian cancer, and cholangiocarcinoma (five major diseases). The 50% survival times of these five major diseases after the first procedure were 25, 39, 31, 49, and 33 days, respectively. The mean survival time for all patients was 73.5 days, and 75.6 days for those with the five major diseases. All patients experienced symptomatic relief, and complications were rare. Repeated KM-CART was performed in 47.1% of the patients, most often in those with ovarian cancer (66.7%). Regarding the mGPS at the first CART procedure, 89% of patients were in the group with the poorest nutritional status. Patients who underwent KM-CART three or more times had longer survival than those who were treated once or twice. CONCLUSION: Repeated KM-CART provides a survival benefit for patients with malignant ascites, even in cases of poor nutritional status.

BACKGROUND: We investigated the relationships between inflammatory markers such as the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), Lung Immune Prognostic Index (LIPI), and modified Glasgow prognostic score (mGPS) to determine whether they could predict treatment response to pembrolizumab or nivolumab (immunotherapy) 6 weeks after the start of treatment (post-treatment). METHODS: We included all patients with lung cancer treated with immunotherapy. We examined the biomarker trends and explored their associations with progression-free survival (PFS), overall survival (OS), and response rate (RR) at 6 weeks. RESULTS: Eighty-three patients were enrolled in the study. The presence of liver metastasis, low post-treatment NLR (<5), low post-treatment PLR (<170), intermediate post-treatment LIPI, and immune-related adverse events were significantly associated with the response. The multivariate analysis revealed that high post-treatment NLRs ≥ 5 (p = 0.004) and PLRs ≥ 170 (p ≤ 0.001) were independent prognostic factors of shorter OS. A good LIPI status was associated with better PFS (p = 0.020) and OS (p = 0.065). Post-treatment mGPS (0-2) was significantly associated with improved PFS (p = 0.009) and OS (p = 0.064). CONCLUSIONS: Post-treatment NLR, PLR, LIPI, and mGPS are associated with worse OS and recurrence. These findings should be independently and prospectively validated in further studies.

PURPOSE: To compare the utility of preoperative immunonutritional parameter measures for predicting postoperative mortality following palliative surgery (PS) for malignant bowel obstruction (MBO) in patients with late-stage cancer. METHODS: The subjects of this retrospective study were 83 late-stage cancer patients with MBO who underwent PS between January, 2005 and December, 2018, at a single institution in Japan. We compared the modified Glasgow prognostic score (mGPS), the prognostic nutritional index (PNI), and the controlling nutritional status (CONUT) for predicting postoperative mortality following PS in these patients. RESULTS: The most prevalent cancer in the patients who underwent PS was colorectal cancer (54.2%), followed by gastric cancer (24.1%). Postoperative complications of Clavien-Dindo classification grade ≥ 2 developed in 32 (38.6%) patients and stoma-related complications developed in 26 (31.3%) patients. There were 15 (18.1%) patients with 60-day mortality, 22 (26.5%) with 90-day mortality, and 4 (4.8%) with 30-day mortality. Multivariable analysis identified only mGPS as being associated with 60-day mortality (odds ratio, 9.387; 95% confidence interval, 0.001-4.478; p = 0.049). The overall survival of patients with a mGPS score of 2 was significantly worse than that of those with a mGPS score of < 2 (p = 0.013). CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that the mGPS is a good predictor not only of 60-day mortality, but also of the overall survival of patients with late-stage cancer and MBO.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate whether inflammation affects the outcome of swallowing ability to improve treatment for sarcopenic dysphagia. DESIGN: A retrospective observational cohort study was performed using data from the Japanese sarcopenic dysphagia database. SETTING: The database was constructed using data from 19 hospitals and one home visiting rehabilitation team. PARTICIPANTS: Patients with sarcopenic dysphagia with measurements of C-reactive protein (CRP) and serum albumin (Alb) were included. MEASUREMENTS: Patients were assigned to two groups using CRP, Alb, and the Japanese modified Glasgow Prognostic Score (mGPS). The Food Intake LEVEL Scale (FILS) was measured at the times of admission and follow-up (FILS follow-up) to assess swallowing function. RESULTS: A total of 197 patients were included. Mean or median values of each parameter were as follows: age: 83.8±8.7, Alb: 3.2 ± 0.6 g/dL, CRP: 8.0 [3.0, 29.0] mg/L, mGPS: 1 [1-2], FILS: 7 [6-8], FILS follow-up: 8 [7-8], and duration of follow-up: 57.0 [27.0, 85.0] days. The FILS score at follow-up was significantly lower in the high CRP group (≥ 5.0 mg/L) than in the low CRP group (< 5.0 mg/L) (p = 0.01). Further, the FILS score at follow-up was significantly lower in the high mGPS group (class; 2) than in the low mGPS group (class; 0 and 1) (p = 0.03). In the multiple linear regression analyses without FILS at baseline, CRP and mGPS were independent risk factors for FILS follow-up. When FILS at baseline was entered, CRP and mGPS were not an independent risk factors for FILS follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: Inflammation could modify the outcome of the patients with sarcopenic dysphagia. Inflammation may be an important risk factor in evaluating patients with sarcopenic dysphagia.

BACKGROUND: Inflammation-scores based on general inflammation markers are suggested as prognostic markers of overall survival (OS) in lung cancer. However, whether these inflammation-scores improves the prognostication performed by well-established prognostic markers is unsettled. In a large register-based lung cancer patient cohort, nine different inflammation-scores were compared, and their ability to optimize the prognostication of OS was evaluated. METHODS: Lung cancer patients diagnosed from 2009-2018 in The Central Denmark Region were identified in the Danish Lung Cancer Registry. Pre-treatment inflammation markers were extracted from the clinical laboratory information system. Prognostication of OS was evaluated by Cox proportional hazard models. Comparison of the inflammation-scores and their added value to established prognostic markers were assessed by Akaike's information criteria and Harrel's C-index. RESULTS: In total, 5,320 patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and 890 patients with small cell lung cancer (SCLC) were identified. In NSCLC, the Aarhus composite biomarker score (ACBS), including albumin, C-reactive protein, neutrophil count, lymphocyte count and haemoglobin, and the neutrophil-lymphocyte-ratio (NLR) were superior. Furthermore, they improved the prognostication of OS significantly (p <0.0001) (ACBS: HR: 2.24 (95%CI: 1.97-2.54); NLR: HR: 1.58 (95%CI: 1.47 - 1.69)). In SCLC, three scores were equally superior and improved the prognostication of OS p < 0.0001): neutrophil-lymphocyte-ratio (HR:1.62 (95%CI: 1.38-1.90)), modified Glasgow Prognostic Score (mGPS) (HR:1.70 (95%CI: 1.55-1.86) and the Combined NLR and GPS (CNG) (HR:2.10 (95%CI: 1.77-2.49). CONCLUSIONS: The ACBS was the optimal score in NSCLC, whereas neutrophil-lymphocyte-ratio, mGPS and CNG were equally superior in SCLC. Additionally, these inflammation-scores all optimised the prognostication of OS and added value to well-established prognostic markers.

BACKGROUND: We investigated whether preoperative nutritional indicators predicted the prognosis for patients with early-stage non-small cell lung cancer. METHODS: Data for stage I or stage IIA non-small cell lung cancer without lymph node metastasis patients who received anatomical lung resection and were followed-up at least five years after surgery (n = 286) were analyzed. We calculated geriatric nutritional risk index, prognostic nutritional index, controlling nutritional status score, and modified Glasgow prognostic score. Multivariate Cox proportional hazard model adjusting for age, BMI, complication, pathological stage, histology of squamous cell carcinoma, T factor, diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide, surgery and smoking status was fitted to evaluate the association between these nutritional indicators and mortality and recurrence within five years. RESULTS: After adjusted for covariates other than type of surgery and diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide, controlling nutritional status of ≥3 was significantly associated with mortality (hazard ratio (HR) = 2.68, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.02, 7.01). The association remained marginally significant by adjusting for type of surgery and diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide (HR = 2.44, 95% CI = 0.92, 6.45). controlling nutritional status of ≥3 was significantly associated with recurrence (HR = 2.60; 95% CI: 1.20, 5.61) after adjusting for all covariates. Other nutritional indices did not predict the prognosis in multivariate analysis. CONCLUSION: Preoperative high controlling nutritional status score was marginally and significantly associated with mortality and recurrence of non-small cell lung cancer patients after lung resection.

We aimed to assess the predictive value of the modified Glasgow prognostic score (mGPS) in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) who underwent stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT). We retrospectively reviewed the records of 207 patients, with a median age of 79 years. The pretreatment mGPS was calculated and categorized as high (mGPS = 1-2) or low (mGPS = 0). The median follow-up duration was 40.7 months. The five-year overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS) and time to progression (TTP) rates were 44.3%, 36% and 54.4%, respectively. Multivariate analysis revealed that mGPS was independently predictive of OS (hazard ratio [HR] 1.67; 95% confidence interval 1.14-2.44: P = 0.009), PFS (HR 1.58; 1.10-2.28: P = 0.014) and TTP (HR 1.66; 1.03-2.68: P = 0.039). Patients who had high mGPS showed significantly worse OS (33.3 vs 64.5 months, P = 0.003) and worse PFS (23.8 vs 39 months, P = 0.008) than those who had low mGPS. The data showed a trend that patients with high mGPS suffered earlier progression compared to those with low mGPS (54.3 vs 88.1 months, P = 0.149). We confirmed that mGPS is independently predictive of prognosis in NSCLC patients treated with SBRT.

BACKGROUND: Assessment of malnutrition, performance status and systemic inflammation are routine aspects of clinical assessment in patients with advanced cancer. There is increasing evidence that body composition measurements from routine staging CT also have prognostic value. To date the relative prognostic value of Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool (MUST), Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group Performance Status (ECOG-PS), modified Glasgow Prognostic score (mGPS) and CT derived body composition analysis in patients with advanced lung cancer has not been examined. The aim of the present study was to examine this relationship. METHODS: Clinicopathological characteristics including MUST, ECOG-PS, mGPS and body composition data were collected pre-radiotherapy from a prospectively maintained database of patients with advanced lung cancer (n = 643). Using the MUST score, patients were classified into low (MUST = 0, n = 189), medium (MUST = 1, n = 341) and high (MUST ≥ 2, n = 113) malnutrition risk and their relationship to systemic inflammatory response (SIR) and body composition with clinical outcomes were examined using univariate and multivariate analyses. Primary outcome of the study was overall survival. RESULTS: Compared with the patients at low nutrition risk (MUST = 0), patients at moderate to high risk (MUST 1-≥2) had poorer ECOG-PS > 1 (p < 0.01), elevated modified frailty index (mFI) (p < 0.001), elevated mGPS (p < 0.001), lower skeletal muscle index (SMI, p < 0.01) but not lower skeletal muscle density (SMD, p = 0.115). MUST was an important prognostic marker of 12 months overall survival (p = 0.001). On multivariate analysis, higher MUST (HR 1.16, 95% CI 1.03-1.31, p < 0.05), ECOG-PS > 1 (HR 1.23, 95% CI 1.10-1.39, p < 0.001), elevated mGPS (HR 1.20, 95% CI 1.09-1.33, p < 0.001) were independently associated with overall survival. CONCLUSION: A large proportion of patients (71%) with advanced lung cancer were at moderate to high nutrition risk. Higher malnutrition risk and elevated inflammatory status were independently associated with poor overall survival. MUST, ECOG-PS and mGPS all had independent prognostic value and may form an important prognostic framework in treatment decision making and resource utilization.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to evaluate the prognostic impact of nutritional and inflammatory measures (controlling nutritional status (CONUT) score, prognostic nutritional index (PNI), and modified Glasgow prognostic score (mGPS)) on overall survival (OS) in patients with stage IV colorectal cancer (CRC). METHODS: Subjects were 996 patients with stage IV CRC who were referred to the National Cancer Center Hospital between 2001 and 2015. We retrospectively investigated correlations between OS and CONUT score, PNI, and mGPS. Multivariate analyses were performed using Cox proportional hazards regression models. RESULTS: After adjusting for known factors (age, gender, BMI, ECOG performance status, location of primary tumor, CEA levels, histological type, M category, and prior surgical treatment), all three measures were found to be independent prognostic factors for OS in patients with stage (CONUT score, p < 0.001; PNI, p < 0.001; mGPS, p < 0.001). Significant differences in OS were found between low CONUT score (0/1) (n = 614; 61%) and intermediate CONUT score (2/3) (n = 276; 28%) (hazard ratio (HR) = 1.20, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.02-1.42, p = 0.032), and intermediate CONUT score and high CONUT score (≥4) (n = 106; 11%) (HR = 1.30, 95% CI: 1.01-1.67, p = 0.045). Significant differences in OS were found between mGPS = 0 (n = 633; 64%) and mGPS = 1 (n = 234; 23%) (HR = 1.84, 95% CI: 1.54-2.19, p < 0.001), but not between mGPS = 1 and mGPS = 2 (n = 129; 13%) (HR = 1.12, 95% CI: 0.88-1.41, p = 0.349). Patients with low PNI (< 48.0) (n = 443; 44%) showed a significantly lower OS rate than those with high PNI (≥48.0) (n = 553; 56%) (HR = 1.39, 95% CI: 1.19-1.62, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: CONUT score, PNI, and mGPS were found to be independent prognostic factors for OS in patients with stage IV CRC, suggesting that nutritional and inflammatory status is a useful host-related prognostic indicator in stage IV CRC.

BACKGROUND: Several studies were conducted to explore the prognostic value of modified Glasgow Prognostic Score (mGPS) in pancreatic cancer, which reported contradictory results. The purpose of this meta-analysis was to summarize and further investigate the correlation between mGPS and overall survival (OS) in pancreatic cancer. METHODS: A systematic literature search was performed in PubMed, EMBASE, ISI Web of Science, Cochrane library databases and OVID to identify eligible studies published from Jan 1, 2011 to June 20, 2020. Pooled hazard ratios (HRs) with corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were used to detect the prognostic significance of mGPS in patients with pancreatic cancer. RESULTS: A total of 222 non-repetitive studies were identified, and 20 related studies that explored the association between survival outcomes and mGPS in pancreatic cancer patients were finally enrolled in this meta-analysis. The results showed a significant correlation between high level of mGPS and poor OS (HR = 1.50, 95% CI 1.20-1.89, P < 0.0001). Similar results were observed in the subgroup analyses based on the treatment regimen and research region. CONCLUSIONS: Our study suggested the close association between poor prognosis and high level of mGPS, which will be helpful for future clinical applications in patients with pancreatic cancer.

BACKGROUND: Immunotherapy targeting programmed cell death-1 (PD-1) and programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) has become the forefront strategy for systemic therapy in advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. PD-L1 expression on tumor cells has been reported as an eligible biomarker of response to such immunotherapies. However, useful biomarkers of response to atezolizumab, an anti PD-L1 antibody, are unestablished. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed clinicopathological characteristics including PD-L1 expression in NSCLC patients treated with atezolizumab from January 2018 at our department. In addition, we investigated the prognostic effect of the following pretreatment immune-inflammation-nutritional parameters: prognostic nutritional index (PNI), neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and modified Glasgow prognostic score (mGPS). RESULTS: Twenty-four patients were enrolled in this study. The median age was 64.5 (range, 49-82) years, and 17 (70.8%) were men. Among this cohort, two patients showed high PD-L1 expression (≥50%), seven showed low (1-49%) expression, and the other 15 patients showed 0% or unknown expression. Survival analyses showed that low PNI was an independent predictor of short time to treatment failure (TTF) [hazard ratio (HR) =6.87, P=0.0052], and high NLR (HR =3.53, P=0.0375) and high mGPS (HR =23.2, P=0.0038) were independent prognostic factors for overall survival (OS) after atezolizumab. Furthermore, the NLR high/mGPS high group had far worse prognosis than the NLR low/mGPS low group. CONCLUSIONS: The therapeutic and prognostic effect of atezolizumab may depend on the host immune-nutritional status. This study provided novel but retrospective evidence, and thus further prospective studies are needed.

OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the preoperative patient status including nutrition, immunity, and inflammation as a predictive factor of remote infection (RI) in colorectal cancer surgery. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A total of 351 patients who underwent colorectal cancer resection were retrospectively analyzed. Factors correlated with RI incidence were identified by logistic analysis and stepwise selection. RESULTS: RI occurred in 27 patients, with an incidence of 7.7%. In univariate logistic analysis, a significantly high incidence of RI was associated with excessive blood loss (>423 mL), long duration of surgery (>279 minutes), ileus, pulmonary dysfunction, performance status (PS) ≥1, American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) classification>2, prognostic nutritional index (PNI) ≤40, and controlling nutritional status (CONUT) ≥2, modified Glasgow Prognostic Score (mGPS) (Score 2).In multivariate analysis, pulmonary dysfunction (odds ratio=2.83; 95% CI: 1.14-6.97; p=0.02) and PNI≤40 (odds ratio=3.87; 95% CI: 1.45-10.31; p=0.006) were independent risk factors of RI incidence. CONCLUSION: RI is caused by poor nutrition, immune system dysfunction and pulmonary dysfunction.

OBJECTIVE: The modified Glasgow Prognostic Score (mGPS) is an inflammation-based measure of malnutrition that reflects a state of cachexia in cancer patients. We evaluated mGPS as an index to predict surgical site infection (SSI) incidence in patients undergoing colorectal cancer surgery. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 351 patients who underwent colon cancer resection. Factors correlated with the incidence of SSIs were identified by logistic analysis and stepwise selection. RESULTS: SSIs were observed in 32 patients, with an incidence of 9.1%. Univariate logistic analysis revealed mGPS (Score 2), laparotomy, resection of other organs, colostomy, excessive blood loss (>423 mL), long duration of surgery (>279 minutes), pulmonary dysfunction, prognostic nutritional index (PNI) ≤40, neutrophil lymphocyte ratio (NLR)(>4), and controlling nutritional status (CONUT) ≥2 to be associated with an increased incidence of SSIs. Multivariate analysis with variables selected by the stepwise procedure also revealed mGPS (Score 2) (Odds ratio (OR) =3.55, 95% Confidence interval (CI) 1.30-9.56; p=0.01), colostomy (OR=6.56, 95%CI 1.60-31.38; p=0.01), excessive blood loss (OR=3.20, 95%CI 1.23-8.42; p=0.02), and NLR (>4)(OR=3.24, 95%CI 1.31-8.17; p=0.01) to be independent risk factors. CONCLUSION: mGPS is an independent risk factor for SSIs. Our results suggest that cachexia before surgery in patients with colorectal cancer might predict the incidence of SSIs.

INTRODUCTION: In a first study, we found predictive factors for hospital admission in lung cancer patients consulting at the emergency department. Knowing that systemic inflammation is a prognostic factor in cancer patients, the goal of our study was to determine whether systemic inflammation measured using the modified Glasgow prognostic score can improve the predictive value of our previous model. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study including all patients with lung cancer consulting at the emergency department of an oncology hospital between January 1st 2008 and December 31st 2010. RESULTS: Of the 548 emergency department visits, C-reactive protein and albumin needed for calculating the Glasgow score, were available for 291 visits. Multivariate analysis identified three predictors of hospitalization subsequent to a visit at the emergency ward: the Modified Glasgow Prognostic Score (mGPS) (OR=2.72; P<0.0001), arrival by ambulance (odds ratio [OR]=21.38; P<0.0001) and the presence of physical signs associated with the complaint (OR=2.72; P<0.05). CONCLUSION: The mGPS is an independent predictor for hospitalization in patients with lung cancer consulting at the emergency department.

PURPOSE: Few studies have investigated the risk factors in patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC) from colorectal cancer (CRC) who die within 3 months of undergoing surgical intervention and systemic chemotherapy. This study aimed to identify the risk factors associated with the post-treatment 3-month mortality rate. METHODS: Retrospectively collected data from Hiroshima University were analyzed for patients presenting with synchronous PC from CRC between 1992 and 2012. The clinical, histological and survival data were evaluated and correlated with the overall survival rate at 3 months after surgical intervention. RESULTS: In patients who underwent surgical intervention with systemic chemotherapy for synchronous PC from CRC (N = 65), a Kaplan-Meier analysis and the log-rank test revealed that systemic chemotherapy (P = 0.023) and the modified Glasgow Prognostic Score (mGPS) (P = 0.00001) were associated with the 3-month mortality rate. Multivariate analyses using these two factors revealed that the mGPS (0/1, 2) (odds ratio 8.087; 95 % CI 1.512-43.25; P = 0.015) was an independent risk factor for the 3-month mortality rate. CONCLUSION: The mGPS is an important independent predictor of the 3-month mortality rate in patients who undergo surgical intervention with systemic chemotherapy for synchronous PC from CRC. The mGPS could aid surgeons in choosing the appropriate treatment strategy and best care for patients.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prognostic potential of the modified Glasgow prognostic score (mGPS), known to reflect the degree of tumor-associated inflammation and cancer cachexia, in patients with advanced head and neck cancer. METHODS: Patients with advanced head and neck cancer treated at the University of Tsukuba Hospital between January 2002 and December 2011 were retrospectively evaluated. They were categorized by their mGPS. RESULTS: A total of 210 patients were enrolled in this study. Patients with an mGPS of 0 had better overall survival and disease-free survival than did those with an mGPS of 1 or 2. Multivariate analysis revealed that the mGPS was a significant risk factor for overall survival and disease-free survival. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that the mGPS is useful for predicting outcome in patients with advanced head and neck cancer and should be included in their routine clinical assessment.
