On or about July 25, 2010, approximately 843,000 gal of condensate diluted bitumen (dilbit, a heavy oil) was released into the Kalamazoo River near Marshall, Michigan. As the discharged Line 6B oil migrated downstream the lighter diluent volatilized, formed visible oil droplets/flakes in the water column, became denser than water and/or became aggregated with sediment and migrated to the underlying bottom sediments. Accurate identification and determination of the amount of Line 6B oil present in the sediment was a primary requirement for remediation and allocation of liability. Based on a multi-tiered application of advanced hydrocarbon fingerprinting methodology, key chemical characteristics of the spilled oil were identified that allow for distinguishing heavy oil-related contamination from the complex river sediment background hydrocarbon contamination. It was determined that among the characteristics evaluated, concentration ratios of selected tri-aromatic steranes and triterpanes were most efficient parameters for identification and quantification of the spilled oil in the environment. This quantification approach was successfully applied and validated with field sample results and is consistent with the well-established environmental stability of these petroleum biomarkers and modern hydrocarbon fingerprinting methodology.

The composition and physical properties of spilled oil have great changes during the seriously weathering process. It brings great difficulties to the source identification of oil spill. So the stable and trustworthy diagnostic ratios (DRs) for accurate identification of severely weathered spilled oils are very important. The explosion of Sinopec pipeline happened on November 22, 2013 at Qingdao, China. Local beaches at Jiaozhou Bay were polluted by spilled oils. We have collected original spilled oil samples from an area free from human interference near the oil leakage point after the accident. Synchronized with actual beach weathering, laboratory experiments were conducted to simulate oil weathering for 360 days by using the collected original spilled oil samples. Based on t test and the repeatability limit method, 50 diagnostic ratios (DRs) of adamantanes were screened. Four DRs, namely 1,3-dimethyladamantane/total dimethyladamantane, 1-methyladamantane/(1-methyladamantane + 1,3-dimethyladamantane), dialkyl diamantane/total diamantane, and diamantane/(diamantane + dialkyl diamantane), have maintained remarkable stability during the simulated weathering experiments and field weathering process. These stable ratios can retain the characteristics of oil source during weathering. They are very beneficial to improve the accuracy of identifying the source of severely weathered oil and can be used as an effective supplement to existing index system for source identification.

Clearing up whether spilled oil is mixed or not can strengthen the accuracy of oil spill identification. In the present study, the biomarkers in spilled oil samples were detected. The weathering modes of different types of diagnostic ratio and carbon isotope values of individual n-alkanes were also analyzed. The results showed that the diagnostic ratios of steroids, terpenes and aromatics, and weathering characteristics of carbon isotope composition (δ13C) of individual n-alkanes supported the idea that Dalian oil spill emerged from a single oil source. Furthermore, commonly used diagnostic ratios of n-alkanes indicated that the Dalian oil spill had undergone the oil mixing process. The different identifying outcomes indicate that some kinds of n-alkane-rich substance (such as oil dispersants) were mixed in the Dalian spilled oil and interfered with the routine diagnosis ratios of n-alkanes.

In hope of developing a method for oil spill detection in laser remote sensing, a series of refined and crude oil samples were investigated using time-resolved fluorescence in conjunction with parallel factors analysis (PARAFAC). The time resolved emission spectra of those investigated samples were taken by a laser remote sensing system on a laboratory basis with a detection distance of 5 m. Based on the intensity-normalized spectra, both refined and crude oil samples were well classified without overlapping, by the approach of PARAFAC with four parallel factors. Principle component analysis (PCA) has also been operated as a comparison. It turned out that PCA operated well in classification of broad oil type categories, but with severe overlapping among the crude oil samples from different oil wells. Apart from the high correct identification rate, PARAFAC has also real-time capabilities, which is an obvious advantage especially in field applications. The obtained results suggested that the approach of time-resolved fluorescence combined with PARAFAC would be potentially applicable in oil spill field detection and identification.
