Objective: This study aimed to assess changes in the morphology of the retina and cornea in patients treated and hospitalized during the acute active phase of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Methods: A total of 24 patients with symptomatic early COVID-19 disease and 38 healthy participants from a control group were enrolled in our study. Among them, 20 received oxygen therapy at flow rates ranging from 1-10 L, while four received high-flow intranasal oxygen therapy (HFNOT). Some patients were treated with other types of therapy, such as Remdesivir, COVID-19 convalescent plasma therapy, or Tocilizumab. In the study, we focused on the analysis of optical coherence tomography (OCT) images of the cornea and retina including corneal thickness, central retinal thickness, retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL), and optic disc parameters. The measurements were acquired using Spectral-domain OCT REVO FC 130. Results: The analysis did not show significant changes between the examined ophthalmological parameters before and after therapy. Furthermore, there were no detected significant differences between the tested parameters of the retina and cornea in COVID-19-positive patients compared to the control group. Conclusions: No ophthalmological manifestations of COVID-19 disease were observed during the study. Taking into account the results of other publications, the lack of an unambiguous position on this topic requires further research.

The most destructive period the world has experienced seems to be behind us. Not a single nation was spared by this disease, and many continue to struggle today. Even after recovering from COVID, patient may continue to experience some post-COVID effects, such as heart irregularities or a decline in lung vitality. In the past three years (2019-2022), the world has witnessed the power of a small entity, a single peculiar virus. Science initially appeared to be helpless in this regard, but due to the emergence of disease, pharmaceutics (the development of anti-covid drugs), immunology (the rapid antigen test), microbiology (the isolation of viruses from infected people), biotechnology (the development of recombinant vaccines), biochemistry (the blood profile, the D-dimer test), and biochemistry (blood profile, D-dimer test), biophysics (PCR, RT-PCR, CT Scan, MRI) had worked together to fight the disease. The results of these efforts are the development of new diagnostic techniques, possible treatment and finally the availability of vaccines against COVID-19. However, it is not proven that the treatment through the traditional medical system is directly active on SARS-CoV-2 but is instead indirectly acting on SARS-CoV-2 effects by improving symptoms derived from the viral disease. In India, the traditional system of medicine and tradition knowledge together worked in the pandemic and proved effective strategies in prevention and treatment of SARS-CoV-2. The use of effective masks, PPE kits, plasma therapy, yoga, lockdowns and social seclusion, use of modern antiviral drugs, monoclonal antibodies, herbal remedies, homoeopathy, hygienic practice, as well as the willpower of people, are all contributing to the fight against COVID. Which methods or practices will be effective against COVID nobody is aware since medical professionals who wear PPE kits do not live longer, and some people in India who remained unprotected and roamed freely were not susceptible to infection. The focus of this review is on the mode of transmission, diagnosis, preventive measures, vaccines currently under development, modern medicine developed against SARS-CoV-2, ayurvedic medicine used during pandemic, homoeopathic medicine used during pandemic, and specific yoga poses that can be used to lessen COVID-related symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) therapy has been recognized as effective treatment option for reducing bacterial load in chronic wounds, such as adult ventricular assist device (VAD) driveline exit-site infections. Currently, there have been no reports on the safety and efficacy of CAP therapy for pediatric cannula infections and inflammations in paracorporeal pulsatile VADs. METHODS: The mechanical strength of Berlin Heart EXCOR cannulas were tested both before and after CAP treatment (SteriPlas, Adtec Healthcare Limited, UK) to prove material safety. A ring tensile test of 20 untreated and 20 CAP-treated (5 min) EXCOR cannulas (Ø12mm), assessed the force at the breaking point of the cannulas (Fmax), at 25% (F25%) and 50% (F50%) of the maximum displacement. Additionally, the scanning electron microscope (SEM) micrographs for both groups examined any surface changes. Finally, the case of a 13-year-old male EXCOR patient with cannula infections, treated with CAP over 100 days, is presented. RESULTS: The in vitro measurements revealed no statistically significant differences in mechanical strength between the control and CAP group for F25% (8.18 ± 0.36 N, vs. 8.02 ± 0.43 N, p = 0.21), F50% (16.87 ± 1.07 N vs. 16.38 ± 1.32 N, p = 0.21), and FMAX (44.55 ± 3.24 N vs. 42.83 ± 4.32 N, p = 0.16). No surface structure alterations were identified in the SEM micrographs. The patient's cannula exit-sites showed a visible improvement in DESTINE wound staging, reduction in bacterial load and inflammatory parameters after CAP treatment without any side effects. CONCLUSION: Overall, CAP therapy proved to be a safe and effective for treating EXCOR cannula exit-site wound healing disorders in one pediatric patient, but further studies should investigate this therapy in more detail.

Objective: This study investigates the association between convalescent plasma therapy and the negative conversion rate in patients with persistent COVID-19 test positivity. Method: A retrospective analysis was conducted on patients with severe or mild to moderate COVID-19 whose viral nucleic acid tests remained positive for over 30 days. Patients were categorized into two groups: those who administered convalescent plasma therapy and those who were not. Data collected included information on therapy strategies used (convalescent plasma, corticosteroids, interferons, etc.), patients' demographic characteristics, comorbidities, therapeutic medications, and nucleic acid testing results. Patients in the convalescent plasma therapy group were matched 1:2 ratio with those in the non-convalescent plasma therapy group. Cumulative negative conversion rates on the fifth, tenth, and fifteenth days post-therapy initiation were analyzed as dependent variables. Independent variables included therapy strategies, demographic characteristics, comorbidities, and therapeutic medication usage. Univariate analysis was conducted, and factors with a p-value (P) less than 0.2 were included in a paired Cox proportional hazards model. Results: There was no statistically significant difference in the cumulative negative conversion rate between the convalescent plasma therapy group and the non-convalescent plasma therapy group on the fifth, tenth, and fifteenth days. Specifically, on day the fifth, the negative conversion rate was 41.46% in the convalescent plasma therapy group compared to 34.15% in the non-convalescent plasma therapy group (HR: 1.72, 95% CI: 0.82-3.61, P = 0.15). On the tenth day, it was 63.41% in the convalescent plasma therapy group and 63.41% in the non-convalescent plasma therapy group (HR: 1.25, 95% CI: 0.69â¼2.26, P = 0.46). On the fifteenth day, the negative conversion rate was 85.37% in the convalescent plasma therapy group and 75.61% in the non-convalescent plasma therapy group (HR: 1.19, 95% CI: 0.71-1.97, P = 0.51). Conclusion: Our finding does not support the hypothesis that convalescent plasma therapy could accelerate the time to negative conversion in patients who consistently test positive for COVID-19.

The results of a prospective open cohort study of the use of platelet-rich plasma (platelet-rich plasma - PRP) in patients with chronic pharyngitis during the exacerbation of the disease are presented. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical efficacy of autologous PRP in the treatment of chronic pharyngitis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Autologous PRP was injected into the posterior pharyngeal wall as a course of endopharyngeal blockages as part of the complex therapy of chronic pharyngitis. Patients in the control group received standard therapy, without the use of autologous PRP. The effectiveness of the studied technique was evaluated by statistical analysis of the intensity of symptoms of the disease, determined by patients throughout the entire period of treatment in the patient's diary, as well as by analyzing data from mass spectrometry of microbial markers and bacteriological examination of the pharyngeal mucosa, collected at the beginning of the study and 14 days after completion of the course of therapy. CONCLUSION: The use of a course of endopharyngeal blockades with autologous platelet-rich plasma as part of the complex therapy of chronic pharyngitis, according to our estimates, provides a significant effect in the form of higher rates of reduction in the severity of symptoms of the disease, a significant reduction in the number of microorganisms deviating from the reference values (by 2 times or more), a decrease in the duration of the disease compared with the control group.

Objective This study aimed to comprehensively examine the correlation between success trends in platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy and the advancing age of patients undergoing fertility interventions. Methods Female participants were categorized randomly into five age groups undergoing PRP or conventional hormone replacement therapy. Procedures included controlled ovarian stimulation, escalating estrogen dosage, gonadotrophin injections, and embryo transfer post-ovulation trigger. A pivotal PRP intervention was provided to half of the age sub-groups, and endometrial thickness was assessed 24 hours prior to embryo transfer. Statistical analysis employed SPSS 26.0 for Windows Student Version (IBM Inc., Armonk, New York), incorporating descriptive statistics, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), Tukey's honestly significant difference (HSD) test to explore age-PRP success relationships (p<0.05). Results The study, involving 60 participants, revealed a balanced patient distribution across age groups, with 20-30 age groups contributing 23.33% each. Baseline characteristics showed no significant differences between PRP and hormone replacement therapy (HRT) groups. Post-intervention, PRP demonstrated consistently higher endometrial thickness (p<0.001) and clinical pregnancy rates (63.33%) compared to HRT (40%). These findings suggest a positive association between PRP therapy and improved outcomes, particularly in younger age cohorts. Conclusion The study challenges traditional perspectives on hormonal influences in fertility, highlighting a potential link between PRP therapy and favorable outcomes among younger age groups. Improved endometrial thickness and clinical pregnancy rates in the PRP group emphasize the need for further exploration of PRP's mechanisms and applications in reproductive medicine.

INTRODUCTION: Convalescent plasma (CP) emerged as potential treatment for COVID-19 early in the pandemic. While efficacy in hospitalised patients has been lacklustre, CP may be beneficial at the first stages of disease. Despite multiple new variants emerging, no trials have involved analyses on variant-specific antibody titres of CP. METHODS: We recruited hospitalised COVID-19 patients within 10 days of symptom onset and, employing a double-blinded approach, randomised them to receive 200 ml convalescent plasma with high (HCP) or low (LCP) neutralising antibody (NAb) titre against the ancestral strain (Wuhan-like variant) or placebo in 1:1:1 ratio. Primary endpoints comprised intubation, corticosteroids for symptom aggravation, and safety assessed as serious adverse events. For a preplanned ad hoc analysis, the patients were regrouped by infused CP's NAb titers to variants infecting the recipients i.e. by titres of homologous HCP (hHCP) or LCP (hLCP). RESULTS: Of the 57 patients, 18 received HCP, 19 LCP and 20 placebo, all groups smaller than planned. No significant differences were found for primary endpoints. In ad hoc analysis, hHCPrecipients needed significantly less respiratory support, and appeared to be given corticosteroids less frequently (1/14; 7.1%) than those receiving hLCP (9/23; 39.1%) or placebo (8/20; 40%), (p = 0.077). DISCUSSION: Our double-blinded, placebo-controlled CP therapy trial remained underpowered and does not allow any firm conclusions for early-stage hospitalised COVID-19 patients. Interestingly, however, regrouping by homologous - recipients' variant-specific - CP titres suggested benefits for hHCP. We encourage similar re-analysis of ongoing/previous larger CP studies. The use of passive immunotherapy, either as plasma or purified antibodies, has been recommended to treat the emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) in the absence of alternative therapeutic options. Here, we compare the neutralization potency of various passive immunotherapy approaches designed to provide the immediate neutralizing antibodies as potential EID treatments. To prepare human plasma and purified IgG, we screened and classified individuals into healthy, convalescent, and vaccinated groups against SARS-CoV-2 using qRT-PCR, anti-nucleocapsid, and anti-spike tests. Moreover, we prepared purified IgG from non-immunized and hyperimmunized rabbits against SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. Human and rabbit samples were used to evaluate the neutralization potency by sVNT. All vaccinated and convalescent human plasma and purified IgG groups, as well as purified IgG from hyperimmunized rabbits, had significantly greater levels of spike-specific antibodies than the control groups. Furthermore, when compared to the other groups, the purified IgG from hyperimmunized rabbits exhibited superior levels of neutralizing antibodies, with an IC50 value of 2.08 µg/ml. Additionally, our results indicated a statistically significant positive correlation between the neutralization IC50 value and the positive endpoint concentration of spike-specific antibodies. In conclusion, our study revealed that purified IgG from hyperimmunized animals has greater neutralization potency than other passive immunotherapy methods and may be the most suitable treatment of critically ill patients in EIDs.

Osteoarthritis of the knee is a prevalent condition that causes pain, discomfort, and disability that can severely impact the quality of life. This literature review aims to review the various interventional pain management techniques available to treat knee osteoarthritis. It analyzes the efficacy of various interventions such as intra-articular corticosteroids, prolotherapy, viscosupplementation, platelet-rich plasma, and genicular nerve blocks with radiofrequency ablation or cryoneurolysis. We searched databases for studies published in the past 20 years. A total of 37 articles were included. The literature supports the idea that a comprehensive treatment plan consisting of the various aforementioned techniques can provide relief for patients while delaying or avoiding joint replacement surgery.

Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is a pro-inflammatory factor produced by residual red blood cell lysis, which can significantly influence the curative effect of Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy used for osteoarthritis (OA) treatment. In this study, we proposed a novel approach for detecting the concentration of MIF in PRP using a dopamine-coated antibody-Au (core)-Ag (shell)-SERS sensor, which enables ultrasensitive and rapid detection of MIF. The best experimental conditions have a detection limit of only 90.05 pg/mL and a good linear relationship between 1-5000 ng/mL. In 40 PRP samples collected from actual clinical patients, we detected MIF concentrations ranging from 2.0-3.6 ng/mL. This indicated that the Coral SERS sensor not only allows for results highly consistent with the traditional ELISA method, but also costs less ($0.40-$0.70), needs shorter testing time (integration time is only 10s), and consumes less PRP that can greatly improve the sample quality and maximize the curative effect in clinical applications for OA treatment with PRP.

Objectives: Anelloviruses have been linked with host-immunocompetence and inflammation. Here, we studied the anellovirus load in hospitalized COVID-19 patients. Methods: We collected samples of patients recruited in the DAWN-Plasma trial that received convalescent plasma (CP) therapy (four plasma units) combined with standard of care (SOC) or SOC of alone. Plasma samples were collected on day 0 and 6 of hospitalization and we quantified anellovirus load. With multivariate models, clinical variables were associated with changes in anellovirus load. Results: Samples were collected on day 0 and 6 of 150 patients (103 CP + SOC and 47 SOC). Anellovirus load was higher on day 0 compared to day 6 and we found a significant drop in SOC patients. Patients receiving immunosuppressive drug had a lower anellovirus load (coefficient: 1.021, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.270-1.772, P = 0.008), while patients admitted to the emergency room displayed a higher abundance on day 0 (1.308, 95% CI 0.443-2.173, P = 0.003). Unspecific markers of inflammation and organ damage, D-dimer (0.001, 95% CI <0.001-0.001, P = 0.001) and lactate dehydrogenase (0.002, 95% CI 0.001-0.004, P = 0.044), were positively associated with anellovirus load. Finally, anellovirus load on day 0 (-39.9, 95% CI -75.72 to -4.27, P = 0.029) was negatively associated with SARS-CoV-2 antibody response on day. Conclusion: The results showed associations between clinical variables and anellovirus load in COVID-19 patients. Many variables share properties related to host immunocompetence or inflammation. Therefore, we expect that anellovirus abundance displays the net state of immune activation.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), an infectious disease caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) virus, can have a wide range of clinical manifestations, ranging from asymptomatic disease to potentially life-threatening complications. Convalescent plasma therapy has been proposed as an effective alternative for the treatment of severe cases. The aim of this study was to follow a two-time renal transplant patient with severe COVID-19 treated with convalescent plasma over time from an immunologic and virologic perspective. A 42-year-old female patient, who was a two-time kidney transplant recipient, was hospitalized with COVID-19. Due to worsening respiratory symptoms, she was admitted to the intensive care unit, where she received two doses of convalescent plasma. We analyzed the dynamics of viral load in nasopharyngeal swab, saliva, and tracheal aspirate samples, before and after convalescent plasma transfusion. The levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines and antibody titers were also measured in serum samples. A significant decrease in viral load was observed after treatment in the saliva and nasopharyngeal swab samples, and a slight decrease was observed in tracheal aspirate samples. In addition, we found evidence of an increase in antibody titers after transfusion, accompanied by a decrease in the levels of several cytokines responsible for cytokine storm.

Cold plasma therapy is a novel approach that has shown significant promise in treating bacterial infections in veterinary medicine. Cold plasma possesses the potential to eliminate various bacteria, including those that are resistant to antibiotics, which renders it a desirable substitute for traditional antibiotics. Furthermore, it can enhance the immune system and facilitate the process of wound healing. However, there are some challenges associated with the use of cold plasma in veterinary medicine, such as achieving consistent and uniform exposure to the affected area, determining optimal treatment conditions, and evaluating the long-term impact on animal health. This paper explores the potential of cold plasma therapy in veterinary medicine for managing bacterial diseases, including respiratory infections, skin infections, and wound infections such as Clostridium botulinum, Clostridium perfringens, Bacillus cereus, and Bacillus subtilis. It also shows the opportunities and challenges associated with its use. In conclusion, the paper highlights the promising potential of utilizing cold plasma in veterinary medicine. However, to gain a comprehensive understanding of its benefits and limitations, further research is required. Future studies should concentrate on refining treatment protocols and assessing the long-term effects of cold plasma therapy on bacterial infections and the overall health of animals.

Chronic wounds (CWs) pose a significant health challenge in clinical practice. Standard wound therapy (SWT) is currently considered the gold standard. However, recent evidence suggests that cold plasma therapy (CPT) holds promise for improving CWs. In light of this, the POWER study was conducted as a multicenter, randomized clinical trial to investigate the effect of large-area plasma application compared with SWT in patients with chronic, non-healing arterial or venous wounds on the lower leg. To analyze the interim results, we employed a comprehensive range of statistical tests, including both parametric and non-parametric methods, as well as GLS model regression and an ordinal mixed model. Our findings clearly demonstrate that CPT therapy significantly accelerates wound closure compared with SWT. In fact, complete wound closure was exclusively observed in the CPT group during the intervention period. Additionally, the CPT group required significantly less antibiotic therapy (4%) compared with the SWT group (23%). Furthermore, CPT led to a significant reduction in wound pain and improved quality of life compared with SWT. In conclusion, the study highlights that the combination of CPT and SWT surpasses monotherapy with SWT alone.

OBJECTIVE: Rotator cuff tear is a common shoulder injury that often leads to serious limitations in daily life. Herein, a network Meta-analysis using frequency theory was performed to evaluate the clinical outcomes of five rotator cuff repair techniques, including single-row repair, double-row repair, suture bridge repair, platelet-rich plasma therapy, and bone marrow stimulation, thus guiding clinical decision-making on rotator cuff repair. METHODS: PubMed, EMbase, The Cochrane Library, and Web of Science were searched for randomized controlled trials and cohort studies comparing rotator cuff repair techniques published from inception to May 2022. Combined analysis and quality assessment were performed using software STATA15.1 and Review Manager5.3. RESULTS: A total of 51 articles were finally included, including 27 randomized controlled trials and 24 cohort studies. Results from the network Meta-analysis showed that: (1) In terms of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons score, platelet-rich plasma therapy, double-row repair, bone marrow stimulation, and single-row repair were significantly better than suture bridge repair. (2) In terms of Constant score, bone marrow stimulation was significantly better than double-row repair, single-row repair, and suture bridge repair. (3) In terms of visual analog scale score, platelet-rich plasma therapy was significantly better than double-row repair and suture bridge repair. (4) In terms of the Shoulder Rating Scale of the University of California at Los Angeles score, platelet-rich plasma therapy and double-row repair were relatively better but not significantly different from the other treatments. (5) In terms of the risk of re-tear, the re-tear rate of platelet-rich plasma therapy and double-row repair was significantly lower than that of single-row repair and suture bridge repair. CONCLUSION: Based on the results of network Meta-analysis and surface under the cumulative ranking, platelet-rich plasma therapy, bone marrow stimulation, and double-row repair have good overall rehabilitation effects. It is recommended to choose appropriate repair techniques as per the actual clinical situation.

Background: Atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS) with diacylglycerol kinase epsilon (DGKE) gene variant is a rare variant of thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA). The information on the clinical features, management and long-term outcomes of DGKE-aHUS patients have not yet been fully elucidated. The aim of this study was to report a novel variant of the DGKE gene in a Chinese population with aHUS. Case presentation: The present work reports a 7-month-old boy with aHUS, possibly triggered by gastrointestinal infection, without complement activation, with little response to plasma therapy and nephroprotective measures. The patient died during the 8th week of his hospital stay. The causes of death were intracranial hemorrhage and multiorgan dysfunction. Comprehensive WES of peripheral blood-derived DNA revealed two heterozygous variations in the DGKE exon region: NM_003647.2, c.610dup, p.Thr204Asnfs*4 and deletion of exons 4-6. Conclusions: This case suggest that atypical HUS with DGKE gene variant has a poor prognosis with a high mortality rate, which typically manifests in the first year of life and presents as a systemic disease with early-onset HUS with rapidly worsening renal function and chronic proteinuria. There is no specific treatment for DGKE-aHUS. There have an uncertain benefit of plasma therapy for DGKE-aHUS patients. The literature demonstrated that anti-complement therapy showed benefits for DGKE-aHUS with complement activation and autoantibodies during the overt TMA presentation but did not prevent TMA relapses. Early diagnosis and treatment may prevent complications and improve prognosis.

Introduction: Cancer is a global health concern, with a significant impact on mortality rates. Despite advancements in targeted antitumor drugs, the development of new therapies remains challenging due to high costs and tumor resistance. The exploration of novel treatment approaches, such as combined chemotherapy, holds promise for improving the effectiveness of existing antitumor agents. Cold atmospheric plasma has demonstrated antineoplastic effects in preclinical studies, but its potential in combination with specific ions for lymphosarcoma treatment has not been investigated. Methods: An in vivo study was conducted using a Pliss lymphosarcoma rat model to evaluate the antitumor effects of composite cold plasma and controlled ionic therapy. Groups of rats were exposed to composite cold plasma for 3, 7, and 14 days, while the control group received no treatment. Additionally, a combination of chemotherapy with cold plasma therapy was assessed, with doxorubicin hydrochloride administered at a dosage of 5 mg/kg. PERENIO IONIC SHIELD™ emitted a controlled ionic formula during the treatment period. Results: The in vivo study demonstrated tumor growth inhibition in groups exposed to composite cold plasma for 3, 7, and 14 days compared to the control group. Furthermore, combining chemotherapy with cold plasma therapy resulted in a threefold reduction in tumor volume. The most significant antitumor effects were observed when doxorubicin hydrochloride at a dosage of 5 mg/kg was combined with 14 days of PERENIO IONIC SHIELD™ ionic therapy. Discussion: The use of composite cold plasma therapy, in conjunction with a controlled ionic formula emitted by PERENIO IONIC SHIELD™, in the complex treatment of lymphosarcoma in rats showed promising antitumor effects. The combination therapy, particularly when combined with doxorubicin hydrochloride, demonstrated enhanced efficacy. These findings suggest the potential for utilizing cold atmospheric plasma and controlled ions as an adjunctive treatment approach in lymphosarcoma therapy. Further research is warranted to explore the mechanisms underlying these effects and to evaluate the safety and efficacy in human clinical trials.

Pregnancy-associated atypical haemolytic uraemic syndrome is a rare and potentially lethal complement-mediated disorder. It can mimic preeclampsia, gestational hypertension, thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura and hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes and low platelets syndrome. Thus, it can be hard to distinguish pregnancy-associated atypical haemolytic uraemic syndrome from other causes in peri/post-partum women presenting with features of microangiopathic haemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia and acute kidney injury. We present a case of a 35-year-old woman in her third pregnancy at 32 weeks' gestation who underwent caesarean section due to fetal distress. She developed severe renal impairment, thrombocytopenia and neurologic symptoms within 24 hours after delivery. A diagnosis of pregnancy-associated atypical haemolytic uraemic syndrome was provided, and treatment with plasma therapy followed by eculizumab was initiated. A rapid improvement of both clinical and laboratory parameters was observed. This case demonstrates the significance of early initiation of anti-complement therapy to prevent irreversible renal damage and possible death in women with pregnancy-associated atypical haemolytic uraemic syndrome.

Background: Atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS) is hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) without a coexisting disease or specific infection. Eculizumab is the standard of care for children with aHUS. However, since it is not yet available in India, plasma therapy remains the treatment of choice in these patients. We studied the clinical profile of children with aHUS and the determinants associated with low estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) on follow-up. Materials and Methods: A retrospective chart review of children (1-18 years) with aHUS managed at a tertiary care center was done. Demographic details, clinical features, and investigations at presentation and on subsequent visits were noted. Details of treatment and duration of hospital stay were recorded. Results: Of 26 children, boys outnumbered girls (2:1). The mean age at presentation was 80 ± 37.6 months. All children were hypertensive during the early phase of illness. Anti-factor H antibodies were elevated in 84% (22/26). Plasma therapy was initiated for 25 patients, and in 17 children, additionally immunosuppression was given. The median duration to achieve hematological remission was 17 days. As compared to children with normal eGFR, those with CKD stage 2 or more had significant delay in initiation of plasma therapy (4 vs. 14 days) and also took a longer time to achieve hematological remission (15 vs. 28 days). The prevalence of hypertension and proteinuria at the last follow-up was 63% and 27%, respectively. Conclusion: Delayed initiation of plasma therapy and longer time to achieve hematological remission are associated with lower eGFR on follow-up. Long-term monitoring of hypertension and proteinuria is needed in these children.
