RESUMEN

Phthalate esters (PAEs), recognized as endocrine disruptors, are released into the environment during usage, thereby exerting adverse ecological effects. This study investigates the occurrence, sources, and risk assessment of PAEs in surface water obtained from 36 sampling points within the Yellow River and Yangtze River basins. The total concentration of PAEs in the Yellow River spans from 124.5 to 836.5 ng/L, with Dimethyl phthalate (DMP) (75.4 ± 102.7 ng/L) and Diisobutyl phthalate (DiBP) (263.4 ± 103.1 ng/L) emerging as the predominant types. Concentrations exhibit a pattern of upstream (512.9 ± 202.1 ng/L) > midstream (344.5 ± 135.3 ng/L) > downstream (177.8 ± 46.7 ng/L). In the Yangtze River, the total concentration ranges from 81.9 to 441.6 ng/L, with DMP (46.1 ± 23.4 ng/L), Diethyl phthalate (DEP) (93.3 ± 45.2 ng/L), and DiBP (174.2 ± 67.6 ng/L) as the primary components. Concentration levels follow a midstream (324.8 ± 107.3 ng/L) > upstream (200.8 ± 51.8 ng/L) > downstream (165.8 ± 71.6 ng/L) pattern. Attention should be directed towards the moderate ecological risks of DiBP in the upstream of HH, and both the upstream and midstream of CJ need consideration for the moderate ecological risks associated with Di-n-octyl phthalate (DNOP). Conversely, in other regions, the associated risk with PAEs is either low or negligible. The main source of PAEs in Yellow River is attributed to the release of construction land, while in the Yangtze River Basin, it stems from the accumulation of pollutants in lakes and forests discharged into the river. These findings are instrumental for pinpointing sources of PAEs pollution and formulating control strategies in the Yellow and Yangtze Rivers, providing valuable insights for global PAEs research in other major rivers.

RESUMEN

HONO is a critical precursor of •OH, but its sources are controversial due to its complex formation mechanism. This study conducted comprehensive observations in Zhengzhou from April 26 to May 11, 2022. Low NOx concentrations were observed during the Covid epidemic period (EP) (10.4 ± 3.0 ppb), compared to the pre-epidemic period (PEP) (12.5 ± 3.8 ppb). The mean HONO concentration during EP (0.53 ± 0.34 ppb) was 0.09 ppb lower than that during PEP (0.62 ± 0.53 ppb). The decrease in HONO concentration during EP came mainly at night due to the reduction in the direct emission (Pemi) (0.03 ppb/hr), the homogeneous reaction between •OH and NO (POH+NO) (0.02 ppb/hr), and the heterogeneous conversion of NO2 on the ground (0.01 ppb/hr). Notably, there was no significant change in daytime HONO concentration. The daytime HONO budget indicated that the primary HONO sources during PEP were the nitrate photolysis (Pnitrate), followed by the POH+NO, Pemi, the photo-enhanced reaction of NO2 on the ground (Pground+hv) and aerosol surface (Paerosol+hv). The primary HONO sources were Pnitrate, POH+NO, Pemi, and Paerosol+hv during EP, respectively. The missing source has a high correlation with solar radiation, there might be other photo-related HONO sources or the contributions of photosensitized reactions were underestimated. In the extremely underestimated cases, HONO production rates from the Pnitrate, Pground+hv, and Paerosol+hv increased by 0.17, 0.10, and 0.10 ppb/hr during PEP, 0.23, 0.13, and 0.16 ppb/hr during EP, and Pnitrate was still the primary source during both PEP and EP.

RESUMEN

Heavy metal(loid) (HM) pollution in agricultural soils has become an environmental concern in antimony (Sb) mining areas. However, priority pollution sources identification and deep understanding of environmental risks of HMs face great challenges due to multiple and complex pollution sources coexist. Herein, an integrated approach was conducted to distinguish pollution sources and assess human health risk (HHR) and ecological risk (ER) in a typical Sb mining watershed in Southern China. This approach combines absolute principal component score-multiple linear regression (APCS-MLR) and positive matrix factorization (PMF) models with ER and HHR assessments. Four pollution sources were distinguished for both models, and APCS-MLR model was more accurate and plausible. Predominant HM concentration source was natural source (39.1%), followed by industrial and agricultural activities (23.0%), unknown sources (21.5%) and Sb mining and smelting activities (16.4%). Although natural source contributed the most to HM concentrations, it did not pose a significant ER. Industrial and agricultural activities predominantly contributed to ER, and attention should be paid to Cd and Sb. Sb mining and smelting activities were primary anthropogenic sources of HHR, particularly Sb and As contaminations. Considering ER and HHR assessments, Sb mining and smelting, and industrial and agricultural activities are critical sources, causing serious ecological and health threats. This study showed the advantages of multiple receptor model application in obtaining reliable source identification and providing better source-oriented risk assessments. HM pollution management, such as regulating mining and smelting and implementing soil remediation in polluted agricultural soils, is strongly recommended for protecting ecosystems and humans.

RESUMEN

Coastal heavy-metal contamination poses significant risks to marine ecosystems and human health, necessitating comprehensive research for effective mitigation strategies. This study assessed heavy-metal pollution in sediments, seawater, and organisms in the Pearl River Estuary (PRE), with a focus on Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn, As, Hg, and Cr. A notable reduction in heavy metal concentrations in surface sediments was observed in 2020 compared to 2017 and 2018, likely due to improved pollution management and COVID-19 pandemic restrictions. Spatial analysis revealed a positive correlation between elevated heavy-metal concentrations (Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd, and As) and areas with significant human activity. Source analysis indicated that anthropogenic activities accounted for 63 % of the heavy metals in sediments, originating from industrial effluents, metal processing, vehicular activities, and fossil fuel combustion. Cd presented a high ecological risk due to its significant enrichment in surface sediments. Organisms in the PRE were found to be relatively enriched with Hg and Cu, with average As concentrations slightly exceeding the Chinese food-health criterion. This study identified high-risk ecological zones and highlighted Cd as the primary pollutant in the PRE. The findings demonstrate the effectiveness of recent pollution control measures and emphasize the need for ongoing monitoring and mitigation to safeguard marine ecosystems and human health.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Addiction can alter neural processes during rest and cognitive performance. Subjects with addictive disorders exhibit preoccupation and anticipation for the psychoactive substance when idle and cognitive deficits, during tasks. METHODS: 128 channel EEG was recorded in sixty subjects (30, with alcohol, opioid and internet addiction; 30 controls) during rest and while performing working memory task to ascertain underlying differences in cortical activity between the groups while at rest and during performance of the task. Artifactually clean data was then subjected to source analysis using sLORETA software in both the groups. RESULTS: EEG cortical source analysis in subjects with addictive disorders showed significant activation of areas of Default Mode Network (DMN) and reduced activation in dorsolateral prefrontal cortices (DLPFC), an area known to be involved in executive function, during performance of task. However, control subjects demonstrated significantly reduced activation in areas of DMN; and increased activation of DLPFC during task performance. CONCLUSION: Inability to suppress DMN inhibits reallocation of neural resources to areas of executive functioning leading to working memory deficits in subjects with addictive disorder.

RESUMEN

This study is focused on the identification of pollutant sources on black crust (BC) samples from the Monumental Cemetery of Milan (Italy), through a multi-analytical approach based on the determination of stable isotope ratios of carbon, sulphur, and oxygen. Six black crust samples, mainly developed on marble sculptures over a time span of 100-150 years, were analysed. For the first time, δ13C was measured for BC samples: δ13C values of the pulverized samples (from -1.2 to +1.3 ‰) are very close to the values obtained from the carbonate matrix, whereas after the removal of the matrix through acidification, δ13C values of BC samples from Milan range from -27.2 to -22.1 ‰, with no significant variation between samples with different ratios of organic carbon to elemental carbon. In sum, the δ13C values obtained for all BC samples fall within the range of anthropogenic emissions such as vehicle traffic, coal combustion and industrial emissions. δ34S and δ18O values of sulphate from BC samples range from -6.3 to +7.0 ‰ and from +7.6 to +10.5 ‰, respectively. Coupling the analysis of the oxygen isotope ratio with that of sulphur enables a more precise identification of the origin of sulphates: the observed isotopic composition falls in the range typical for anthropogenic emission of sulphur dioxide. Overall, in this study, C, S and O isotopes were combined for the first time to assess pollutant sources on black crust samples: this multi-stable isotope approach allowed to show that the BC formation on monuments from the Monumental Cemetery of Milan mostly results from anthropogenic emissions from fossil fuels combustion by road vehicles and factories, as well as domestic heating.

RESUMEN

The fractionation and distribution of two potentially toxic elements (Co and Ni) were investigated in surface sediments to explore the pollution in Xiamen Bay, a special zone experiencing rapid economic growth and enormous environmental pressure. Relatively high concentrations were observed in nearshore areas with frequent human activities. The dominant fractions for Co and Ni were found to be residual, followed by exchangeable phase. Spatial differences in mobility and bioavailability inferred from chemical fractionations were more pronounced for Ni. Multiple evaluation methods including geo-accumulation index, risk assessment code, modified potential ecological risk index, etc., consistently indicated that pollution levels and ecological risks in the entire bay were generally classified as medium-low. However, non-carcinogenic risks of Co for children and carcinogenic risks of Ni for adults exceeded safety thresholds. Terrestrial weathering processes and industrial activities primarily contributed to the presence of these elements, while their distributions were mainly influenced by organic matter.

RESUMEN

Background: Meditation using the "OM" mantra is the most widely used practice in India. Though reports have been published about the relaxation effect during both verbal "OM" chanting and listening to "OM" chanting, there is a paucity of literature concerning the cortical areas activated/deactivated after verbal "OM" chanting and listening to "OM" chanting using quantitative electro-encephalography (qEEG). Purpose: The objective of this study was to compare the effects of verbal "OM" chanting and listening to "OM" chanting on cortical sources as compared to baseline, as assessed by qEEG. Method: Twenty adult male subjects with a mean age of 27.5 ± 7.5 years and no past or present history of psychiatric, neurological, or auditory disorders or previous exposure to yoga and meditation were recruited from the undergraduate and postgraduate student population of AIIMS, New Delhi. Subjects were given a paradigm designed using E-prime for both verbal and listening to "OM" chanting of 5 min each and a 5-min relaxation period in between the tasks. Electroencephalography recording was done using a 128-channel geodesic sensor net with band-pass filtered at 1-70 Hz, and 20-sec data of eyes-closed condition, post-verbal "OM", and post-listening to "OM" chanting were segmented and pre-processed. Further, source analysis was performed on the data using standardized low-resolution electromagnetic tomography. Result: The pre (baseline) versus post-verbal "OM" (p < .05) and post-listening to "OM" (p < .05) chanting showed significant differences in similar cortical areas in both verbal "OM" and listening to "OM" chanting except the three areas, that is, the orbital gyrus, the rectal gyrus, and the sub-callosal gyrus, which were additionally activated post-listening to "OM" chanting. Both verbal and listening to "OM" chanting induced activation of similar cortical areas, which were classified as the nodes/hubs of specific resting-state networks (RSNs) such as the attentional network, frontoparietal control network, and default mode network. Conclusion: The study results suggest that "OM" chanting could facilitate flexible switching between various RSNs to induce a relaxed state and could improve attention simultaneously. Both verbal and listening to "OM" chanting induced common activated areas that are classified into frontoparietal, dorsal attention, and default mode network areas. And it is hypothesized that flexible switching between these RSNs could induce a relaxed state and improve attention simultaneously with the possible role of the frontoparietal network.

RESUMEN

Researchers are increasingly focusing on renewable energy due to its high reliability, energy independence, efficiency, and environmental benefits. This paper introduces a novel multi-objective framework for the short-term scheduling of microgrids (MGs), which addresses the conflicting objectives of minimizing operating expenses and reducing pollution emissions. The core contribution is the development of the Chaotic Self-Adaptive Sine Cosine Algorithm (CSASCA). This algorithm generates Pareto optimal solutions simultaneously, effectively balancing cost reduction and emission mitigation. The problem is formulated as a complex multi-objective optimization task with goals of cost reduction and environmental protection. To enhance decision-making within the algorithm, fuzzy logic is incorporated. The performance of CSASCA is evaluated across three scenarios: (1) PV and wind units operating at full power, (2) all units operating within specified limits with unrestricted utility power exchange, and (3) microgrid operation using only non-zero-emission energy sources. This third scenario highlights the algorithm's efficacy in a challenging context not covered in prior research. Simulation results from these scenarios are compared with traditional Sine Cosine Algorithm (SCA) and other recent optimization methods using three test examples. The innovation of CSASCA lies in its chaotic self-adaptive mechanisms, which significantly enhance optimization performance. The integration of these mechanisms results in superior solutions for operation cost, emissions, and execution time. Specifically, CSASCA achieves optimal values of 590.45 €ct for cost and 337.28 kg for emissions in the first scenario, 98.203 €ct for cost and 406.204 kg for emissions in the second scenario, and 95.38 €ct for cost and 982.173 kg for emissions in the third scenario. Overall, CSASCA outperforms traditional SCA by offering enhanced exploration, improved convergence, effective constraint handling, and reduced parameter sensitivity, making it a powerful tool for solving multi-objective optimization problems like microgrid scheduling.

RESUMEN

Streptococcus pyogenes is responsible for a range of diseases in humans contributing significantly to morbidity and mortality. Among more than 200 serotypes of S. pyogenes, serotype M1 strains hold the greatest clinical relevance due to their high prevalence in severe human infections. To enhance our understanding of pathogenesis and discovery of potential therapeutic approaches, we have developed the first genome-scale metabolic model (GEM) for a serotype M1 S. pyogenes strain, which we name iYH543. The curation of iYH543 involved cross-referencing a draft GEM of S. pyogenes serotype M1 from the AGORA2 database with gene essentiality and autotrophy data obtained from transposon mutagenesis-based and growth screens. We achieved a 92.6% (503/543 genes) accuracy in predicting gene essentiality and a 95% (19/20 amino acids) accuracy in predicting amino acid auxotrophy. Additionally, Biolog Phenotype microarrays were employed to examine the growth phenotypes of S. pyogenes, which further contributed to the refinement of iYH543. Notably, iYH543 demonstrated 88% accuracy (168/190 carbon sources) in predicting growth on various sole carbon sources. Discrepancies observed between iYH543 and the actual behavior of living S. pyogenes highlighted areas of uncertainty in the current understanding of S. pyogenes metabolism. iYH543 offers novel insights and hypotheses that can guide future research efforts and ultimately inform novel therapeutic strategies.IMPORTANCEGenome-scale models (GEMs) play a crucial role in investigating bacterial metabolism, predicting the effects of inhibiting specific metabolic genes and pathways, and aiding in the identification of potential drug targets. Here, we have developed the first GEM for the S. pyogenes highly virulent serotype, M1, which we name iYH543. The iYH543 achieved high accuracy in predicting gene essentiality. We also show that the knowledge obtained by substituting actual measurement values for iYH543 helps us gain insights that connect metabolism and virulence. iYH543 will serve as a useful tool for rational drug design targeting S. pyogenes metabolism and computational screening to investigate the interplay between inhibiting virulence factor synthesis and growth.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: Metadata for data dIscoverability aNd study rEplicability in obseRVAtional studies (MINERVA), a European Medicines Agency-funded project (EUPAS39322), defined a set of metadata to describe real-world data sources (RWDSs) and piloted metadata collection in a prototype catalogue to assist investigators from data source discoverability through study conduct. METHODS: A list of metadata was created from a review of existing metadata catalogues and recommendations, structured interviews, a stakeholder survey, and a technical workshop. The prototype was designed to comply with the FAIR principles (findable, accessible, interoperable, reusable), using MOLGENIS software. Metadata collection was piloted by 15 data access partners (DAPs) from across Europe. RESULTS: A total of 442 metadata variables were defined in six domains: institutions (organizations connected to a data source); data banks (data collections sustained by an organization); data sources (collections of linkable data banks covering a common underlying population); studies; networks (of institutions); and common data models (CDMs). A total of 26 institutions were recorded in the prototype. Each DAP populated the metadata of one data source and its selected data banks. The number of data banks varied by data source; the most common data banks were hospital administrative records and pharmacy dispensation records (10 data sources each). Quantitative metadata were successfully extracted from three data sources conforming to different CDMs and entered into the prototype. CONCLUSIONS: A metadata list was finalized, a prototype was successfully populated, and a good practice guide was developed. Setting up and maintaining a metadata catalogue on RWDSs will require substantial effort to support discoverability of data sources and reproducibility of studies in Europe.

RESUMEN

The presence of emerging contaminants (ECs) in drinking water sources is an increasing concern, yet limited data exists on their occurrence and risk in the upper Huaihe River Basin, an important agricultural region in Central China. This study investigated 70 ECs, including pesticide and antibiotics in surface water from drinking water source areas in Nanwan Reservoir along the upper reaches of the Huaihe River Basin to prioritize the ECs based on ecological risk and health risk assessment. A total of 66 ECs were detected in the surface water at least once at the selected 38 sampling sites, with concentrations ranging from 0.04 to 2508 ng/L. Ecological risk assessment using the risk quotient (RQ) method revealed high risks (RQ > 1) from 7 ECs in the dry season and 15 ECs in the wet season, with triazine pesticides as the main contributors. Non-carcinogenic risks were below negligible levels, but carcinogenic risks from neonicotinoid and carbamate pesticides and macrolide antibiotics were concerning for teenagers. Ciprofloxacin exhibited a high level of resistance risk during the wet season. A multi-indicator prioritization approach integrating occurrence, risk, and chemical property data ranked 6 pesticides and 3 antibiotics as priority pollutants. The results highlight EC contamination of drinking water sources in this agriculturally-intensive region and the need for targeted monitoring and management to protect water quality.

RESUMEN

In this work, the eco-friendly N-doped carbon dots KF-CDs and A-CDs were derived from kiwifruit by a simple one-step hydrothermal strategy at 180 °C for 6 h. KF-CDs have a high fluorescence quantum yield (27.85%), it is obviously rapid quenched by Fe3+, and have a good linear relationship from 1 to 8.26 µM (the detection limit was 0.077 µM). Basic red 9 is extensively used in biological, environmental and industry. Although it makes a great contribution to the economy, its toxicity should be taken seriously, especially with harmful metal ions. Within 2 h, A-CDs could degrade basic red 9 with degradation efficiency 89.6%, even though there was a stable compound formed with Fe3+ that the degradation efficiency was up to 88.3%. The results complement the research blank of carbon dots in catalytic degradation of basic red 9.

RESUMEN

Introduction: The precipitation pattern has changed significantly in arid desert areas, yet it is not clear how the water use strategies of Tamarix ramosissima Ledeb. on coppice dunes along a natural precipitation gradient are affected. Methods: In this study, the hydrogen and oxygen isotope compositions of xylem water, soil water, precipitation, and groundwater were measured by stable isotope techniques in Huocheng, Mosuowan, and Tazhong. Additionally, the water use strategies of natural precipitation gradient were investigated in conjunction with the MixSIAR model. Results: The results indicated that the water sources of T. ramosissima exhibited significant variation from semi-arid to hyper-arid areas. In semi-arid areas, T. ramosissima mainly absorbed shallow, shallow-middle, and middle soil water; however, T. ramosissima shifted its primary water sources to middle and deep soil water in arid areas. In hyper-arid areas, it mainly utilized deep soil water and groundwater. In contrast, the water source contribution rate of T. ramosissima exhibited relative uniformity across each layer in an arid area. Notably, in hyper-arid areas, the proportion of groundwater by T. ramosissima was significantly high, reaching 60.2%. This is due to the relatively shallow groundwater supplementing the deep soil water content in the area. In conclusion, the proportion of shallow soil water decreased by 14.7% for T. ramosissima from semi-arid to hyper-arid areas, illustrating the occurrence of a gradual shift in potential water sources utilized by T. ramosissima from shallow to deep soil water and groundwater. Discussion: Therefore, T. ramosissima on coppice dunes shows flexible water use strategies in relation to precipitation and groundwater, reflecting its strong environmental adaptability. The findings hold significant implications for the conservation of water resources and vegetation restoration in arid areas.

RESUMEN

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are highly concerning environmental pollutants due to their toxicity, persistence, and bioaccumulation. In this paper, concentrations and compositions of 16 United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) priority control PAHs in the fish collected from four lakes in central and eastern China were analyzed. 18 species of fish were collected from four typical lakes, namely Taihu Lake, Danjiangkou Reservoir, Yuncheng Salt Lake, and Nansi Lake. Quantitative analysis of PAHs were carried out with gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer, and 13 out of 16 PAHs were identified, with the main components being pyrene, chrysene, naphthalene, and benzo(b)fluoranthene. The accumulation of PAHs in fish from Taihu Lake, Danjiangkou Reservoir, Yuncheng Salt Lake, and Nansi Lake was 28.75-47.27, 26.60-31.93, 33.56-39.30, and 27.22-43.01 ng·g-1, respectively. The toxic equivalents of high-cyclic PAHs in fish of the four lakes were significantly higher than those of low-cyclic and middle-cyclic PAHs (P < 0.05). In Taihu Lake, Danjiangkou Reservoir, and Nansi Lake, the toxicity equivalents were predominantly contributed by benzo[a] pyrene (BaP), while in Yuncheng Salt Lake, dibenzo(a,h) anthracene (DahA) was the main contributor. The residents in central and eastern China exposed to PAHs had a negligible non-cancer risk (non-carcinogenic risk values <1) and a potential low cancer risk. It was noteworthy that the Pleuronichthys cornutus and Lateolabrax japonicus from Yuncheng Salt Lake could pose carcinogenic risks (>10-4) to humans, with benzo[b]fluoranthene (BbF) having the highest risk contribution rate. Source analysis indicated that the main source of PAHs in fish was combustion sources. BaP, DahA, and BbF could become potential pollutants of concern in the field of ecotoxicology. The results of this study on PAHs bioaccumulation, pollution characteristics, sources and health risks in fish from four lakes would provide a scientific basis for local governments to formulate targeted environmental management policies, pollution control measures, and public health strategies.

RESUMEN

AIMS: The aim of this study was to explore the sources of influence which impact choosing an operating department practitioner career among current operating department practitioner students in England to inform recommendations for maximising recruitment and retention. METHODS: An online questionnaire was disseminated to allied health professional, inclusive of operating department practitioner, students in England in 2021. RESULTS: One hundred and fifty operating department practitioner students attending undergraduate courses completed the questionnaire. Personal influences, such as role models, were the key sources of influence for choosing an operating department practitioner career. Educational sources were the least influential. Gaining work experience or exposure to the theatre setting was perceived as key to address course attrition. Conducting one's own research was vital in learning more about the operating department practitioner role and influencing the decision to choose the profession. CONCLUSIONS: There are opportunities to utilise media and educational sources more effectively to influence individuals to choose an operating department practitioner career.

RESUMEN

Background: Aberrance in switching from default mode network (DMN) to fronto-parietal network (FPN) is proposed to underlie working memory deficits in subjects with substance use disorders, which can be studied using neuro-imaging techniques during cognitive tasks. The current study used EEG to investigate pre-stimulus microstates during the performance of Sternberg's working memory task in subjects with substance use disorders. Methods: 128-channel EEG was acquired and processed in ten age and gender-matched subjects, each with alcohol use disorder, opioid use disorder, and controls while they performed Sternberg's task. Behavioral parameters, pre-stimulus EEG microstate, and underlying sources were analyzed and compared between subjects with substance use disorders and controls. Results: Both alcohol and opioid use disorder subjects had significantly lower accuracy (P < 0.01), while reaction times were significantly higher only in subjects of alcohol use disorder compared to controls (P < 0.01) and opioid use disorder (P < 0.01), reflecting working memory deficits of varying degrees in subjects with substance use disorders. Pre-stimulus EEG microstate revealed four topographic Maps 1-4: subjects of alcohol and opioid use disorder showing significantly lower mean duration of Map 3 (visual processing) and Map 2 (saliency and DMN switching), respectively, compared to controls (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Reduced mean durations in Map 3 and 2 in subjects of alcohol and opioid use disorder can underlie their poorer performance in Sternberg's task. Furthermore, cortical sources revealed higher activity in both groups of substance use disorders in the parahippocampal gyrus- a hub of DMN; superior and middle temporal gyri associated with impulsivity; and insula that maintains balance between executive reflective system and impulsive system. EEG microstates can be used to envisage neural underpinnings implicated for working memory deficits in subjects of alcohol and opioid use disorders, reflected by aberrant switching between neural networks and information processing mechanisms.

RESUMEN

Purpose: Women with high breast density (HBD) carry an increased risk for breast cancer (BC). The aim of the study was to provide data on awareness and knowledge gaps among women with vs w/o HBD about BC risk factors (BCRFs), which is the basis for effective communication about screening. Patients and Methods: This was a web-based survey of 3000 women aged ≥30 and ≤70 from six countries. It comprised of 45 questions. T-tests and chi-square tests with False Discovery Rate adjustments were conducted as applicable, with significant differences reported at α=0.05. Results: Three-thousand women were included in the analysis, 733 (24.4%) had HBD. Overall, 39% of women were familiar with the concept of HBD in the context of BC. Thirty-one percent of women were aware of HBD as BCRF and for 24% of women HBD was personally applicable. A significantly higher proportion of women with HBD were aware of almost all BCRFs compared to women w/o HBD (p ≤ 0.05). Similarly, a significantly higher proportion of women with HBD have undergone screening procedures compared to women w/o HBD (p ≤ 0.05). Women with HBD were significantly better aware of basic facts about BC (p ≤ 0.05). A total of 1617 women underwent mammography, 904 ultrasound and 150 MRI during their last screening. The most relevant source of information about BC was the health care professional, as reported by 63% of women. Conclusion: Overall 39% of women were familiar with HBD as BCRF. Lack of BCRF awareness may contribute to delayed screenings, missed opportunities for early detection, and potentially poorer outcomes for individuals with dense breast tissue. Thus, this information should be communicated more widely.
