RESUMEN

Turmeric improves performance in nonruminants, but results in laying hens are not consistent. This meta-analysis assessed the performance of laying hens fed turmeric powder (TP)-based diets. Nineteen studies retrieved from Google Scholar, Scopus, ScienceDirect, PubMed, and Web of Science databases were used for the meta-analysis. The outcome variables analysed were productive indices (feed intake [FI], feed conversion ratio [FCR], hen day production [HDP], egg weight [EW], egg mass [EM]), egg quality (Haugh unit [HU], shell thickness [SHT], shell strength [SHS], yolk cholesterol [YC]), serum biochemical parameters (serum cholesterol [SC], alanine transferase [ALT], and aspartate transferase [AST]), and moderator variables (layer strains, inclusion level, feeding duration, and hen's age). All analyses were performed on OpenMEE software and the R package. A random-effects model (REM) was used and results were presented as standardised mean difference (SMD) at a 95% confidence interval (CI). The results showed that dietary TP improved FCR (SMD = -0.31; 95% CI: -0.61, -0.01; p = 0.046) and HDP (SMD = 0.49; 95% CI: 0.29, 0.69; p < 0.001), but not EW, EM, HU, SHT, SHS, YC, and serum AST in layers. On the other hand, dietary TP decreased FI (SMD = -0.15; 95% CI: -0.26, -0.05; p = 0.004), SC (SMD = -75.18; 95% CI: -102.55, -47.80; p < 0.001), and ALT (SMD = -3.55; 95% CI: -4.71, -2.40; p < 0.001) in laying hens with proof of significant heterogeneity. However, meta-regression showed that layer strains and feeding duration accounted for most of the sources of heterogeneity. In conclusion, results suggest that dietary TP increased HDP and reduced FI, FCR, SC, and ALT in laying hens.

The therapeutic properties of turmeric essential oil have been extensively documented in both preclinical and clinical studies. Research indicates that its primary active compounds are promising candidates for addressing a wide range of pathologies, exhibiting anticancer, anti-inflammation, antioxidant, cardiovascular, hypoglycemic, dermatological, hepatoprotective, neurological, antiparasitic, antiviral, insecticidal, antifungal, and antivenom activities. While numerous compounds possess similar potential applications, the isolated active constituents of turmeric essential oil stand out due to their unique pharmacological profiles and absence of toxicity. This literature review meticulously compiles and analyzes the bioactivities of these constituents, emphasizing their molecular mechanisms of action, reported pharmacological effects, and potential therapeutic applications. The aim of this review is to provide a comprehensive synthesis of currently available clinical and preclinical findings related to individual turmeric essential oil compounds, while also identifying critical knowledge gaps. By summarizing these findings, this work encourages further research into the isolated compounds from turmeric oil as viable drug candidates, ultimately contributing to the development of innovative therapeutic strategies.

Our research team previously reported the immunomodulatory effects of kombucha fermentation liquid. This study investigated the protective effects of turmeric kombucha (TK) against lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced sepsis and its impact on the intestinal microbiota of mice. A turmeric culture medium without kombucha served as the control (TW). Non-targeted metabolomics analysis was employed to analyze the compositional differences between TK and TW. Qualitative analysis identified 590 unique metabolites that distinguished TK from TW. TK improved survival from 40 to 90%, enhanced thermoregulation, and reduced pro-inflammatory factor expression and inflammatory cell infiltration in the lung tissue, suppressing the NF-κB signaling pathway. TK also altered the microbiome, promoting Allobaculum growth. Our findings shed light on the protective effects and underlying mechanisms of TK in mitigating LPS-induced sepsis, highlighting TK as a promising anti-inflammatory agent and revealing new functions of kombucha prepared through traditional fermentation methods.

Machine learning techniques were applied systematically to the spectral data of near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy to find out the sudan dye I adulterants in turmeric powders. Turmeric powder is one of the most commonly used spice and a simple target for adulteration. Pure turmeric powder was prepared at the laboratory and spiked with sudan dye I adulterants. The spectral data of these adulterated mixtures were obtained by NIR spectrometer and investigated accordingly. The concentrations of the adulterants were 1%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%, 30% (w/w) respectively. Exploratory data analysis was done for the visualization of the adulterant classes by principal component analysis (PCA). Optimization of the pre-processing and wavelength selection was done by cross-validation techniques using a partial least squares regression (PLSR) model. For quantitative analysis four different regression techniques were applied namely ensemble tree regression (ENTR), support vector regression (SVR), principal component regression (PCR), and PLSR, and a comparative analysis was done. The best method was found to be PLSR. The accuracy of the PLSR analysis was determined with the coefficients of determination (R2) of greater than 0.97 and with root mean square error (RMSE) of less than 0.93 respectively. For the verification of the robustness of the model, the Figure of merit (FOM) of the model was derived with the help of the Net analyte signal (NAS) theory. The current study established that the NIR spectroscopy can be applied to detect and quantify the amount of sudan dye I adulterants added to the turmeric powders with satisfactory accuracy. Drug-induced liver injury is one of the most common causes of acute liver failure in the Western world. Despite discontinuation of the offending agent, it can still tax a grim prognosis. We describe a case of a menopausal woman taking a herbal supplement called "Provitalize" to relieve hot flashes and bloating. This is the first case report of liver injury from this supplement. She initially presented with mild jaundice and elevated transaminases. Unfortunately, she rapidly progressed to encephalopathy, experienced multiorgan failure, and then died.

Botanical supplements and herbal products are widely used by consumers for various purported health benefits, and their popularity is increasing. Some of these natural products can have adverse effects on liver function and/or interact with prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) medications. Ensuring the safety of these readily available products is a crucial public health concern; however, not all regulatory authorities require premarket safety review and/or testing. To address and discuss these and other emerging needs related to botanical safety, a symposium was held at the Society of Toxicology Annual Meeting in Salt Lake City (UT) on March 11, 2024. The symposium addressed the latest research on botanical-induced liver toxicity and botanical-drug interactions, including new approach methods to screen for toxicity, challenges in assessing the safety of botanicals, and relating human adverse events to specific products. The presentations and robust panel discussion between the speakers and audience highlighted the need for further research and collaboration to improve the safety of botanical supplements and herbal products, with the ultimate goal of protecting consumer health. Although utility of many of the modern tools presented in the symposium requires further study, the synergistic efforts of diverse experts hold promise for effective prediction and evaluation of botanical-induced hepatotoxicity and botanical-drug interaction potential.

Background: Postpartum depression is a major psychiatric disorder that affects the mother-baby attachment and may impair cognitive development of the child. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of curcumax (including ginger, turmeric, and black pepper) on postpartum depression in reproductive-aged women. Material and methods: This was a randomized controlled trial in which 124 women were recruited and randomly assigned into two groups of curcumax (n=62) and placebo (n=62) who consumed curcumax or placebo for 8 weeks (one capsule each day). Postpartum depression was measured using Edinburgh Depression Scale. Data were analyzed using Chi-square, independent t-test, and GEE. Results: The mean (SD) score of depression score was 15.83 (2.77) and 15.45 (2.97) before intervention, which reduced to 3.48 (4.29) and 7.22 (3.98) in the intervention and control groups, respectively after 4 weeks (p<0.0001). After eight weeks of intervention, these scores reduced to 1.72 (3.30) and 5.85 (3.67) in the intervention and control groups, respectively (p<0.0001). Conclusion: The results of this study showed that curcumax significantly reduced the mean score of postpartum depression among reproductive-aged women. Because it is the first time this herb was used as an anti-depressant, its effective dose was not available. Therefore, further studies with higher doses of this herb are recommended. MnAl layered double hydroxide hybrid with magnetic-multiwalled carbon nanotubes was synthesized by a hydrothermal method and used for the extraction of Pb(II) (lead) from spices and water samples in the dispersive solid phase microextraction (dSPµE) technique using FAAS. The as-prepared adsorbent MMWCNTs@MnAl-LDH was characterized by XRD, FTIR, EDX, and SEM techniques. Various analytical parameters were optimized, including pH 8, adsorbent dosage of 5 mg, HNO3 eluent concentration of 1 mol L-1, eluent volume of 3 mL, eluent time of 60 s, and sample volume of 20 mL, for quantitative lead recoveries, with an LOD of 0.314 µg L-1, an LOQ of 1.048 µg L-1, and PF of 11.53. Under the optimized conditions, the linearity ranges from 0.5 to 500 µg L-1 (R2 = 0.9997). For the validation test of the established dSPµE procedure, Certified reference materials (CRMs) were used, yielding satisfactory recovery results ranging from 97.8 to 102.7 %. The method was applied to determine lead in turmeric, tap water, and industrial water samples.

This study aimed to examine whether dietary supplementation of broiler chickens with turmeric essential could mitigate the effects of cyclic heat stress conditions. Intestinal and immunological parameters and gene expression were evaluated during the grower phase. A total of 320 21-day-old male Cobb 500 broilers were distributed according to a completely randomized design with a 4 (diet) × 2 (environment) factorial arrangement and eight replications of five birds each. Dietary treatments consisted of a basal diet without essential oil (EO, negative control) and three diets containing low (100 mg kg-1), intermediate (200 mg kg-1), or high (300 mg kg-1) levels of turmeric EO. In the heat stress group, dietary supplementation with turmeric EO at 100 and 200 mg kg-1 improved body weight, feed conversion, breast yield, and relative liver weight. These supplementation levels reduced villus width, increased villus/crypt ratio, reduced the H/L ratio, and improved hepatic (HSP70 and SREBP1) and intestinal (OCLN) gene expression in birds under heat stress. These findings support the hypothesis that turmeric EO can be used to improve or restore intestinal integrity, modulate inflammation parameters, and, consequently, enhance the performance of broilers challenged by cyclic heat stress.

Objectives: This study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of turmeric, ashwagandha, and aloe vera in the management of oral lichen planus (OLP) lesion. Materials and Methods: Thirty patients with histologically confirmed symptomatic OLP with gingival presentation were included in this comparative investigation. Three groups of participants were created: Group I consisted of turmeric; group II included ashwagandha; and group III included aloe vera. For 3 weeks in a row, they were told to apply topical treatments twice a day. The patients were recalled for 4 to evaluate the cessation of symptoms. Result: The participants in all the groups showed a considerable improvement in the burning lesion size and pain after 4 months of follow-up. Conclusion: For the treatment of OLP, turmeric, ashwagandha, and aloe vera can be useful as substitute topical medications, particularly for those who are not responsive to topical corticosteroids.

In recent years, the use of natural bioactive compounds derived from spices has garnered significant interest in poultry production due to their potential to modulate immune responses and oxidative stress. An investigation into the roles of spices essential oils (EO) on inflammatory cytokines, HSP70 and oxidative markers of broiler chickens was conducted in this study. Four spices consisting of garlic, ginger, turmeric, and cinnamon were processed to obtain their respective EO. Two hundred 1-d-old arbo acre broilers were allotted to 5 treatments consisting of B1 (control), B2 (garlic EO), B3 (ginger EO), B4 (Turmeric EO), and B5 (cinnamon EO), with EOs administered to drinking water at 30% (v/v) in a 49-d trial. Blood was sampled for assessment of hematological parameters, and serum obtained were assayed for inflammatory cytokines, antioxidant activities, nuclear factor kappa B (NFκB), 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), and heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) levels using standard procedures. Results obtained revealed that cinnamon EO enhanced erythrocytic indices, leukocyte profile, catalase, glutathione peroxidase and interleukin 10, lowers interleukin 1 beta (IL-1ß) and interferon gamma (IFN-γ), enhanced HSP70 and higher 8-OHdG levels in chicken. Garlic EO enhanced monocytes and superoxide dismutase, while reduced IFN-γ and HSP70, but increased IL-1ß and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) NFκB in broiler chickens. Ginger EO also enhanced erythrocytic indices, total antioxidant activity, lowered IFN-γ and lipid peroxidation, while turmeric EO enhanced total antioxidant activity, catalase and lowered IFN-γ and increased 8ohdg in broiler chickens. In conclusion, this study revealed that ginger and turmeric EO were more beneficial in preventing oxidative DNA damage, cinnamon EO enhanced serum oxidative status and lowered pro-inflammatory cytokines, while garlic EO reduced HSP70 in broiler chickens.

Context: The purpose of this article is to evaluate the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimal bactericidal concentration (MBC) of Herbal Irrigants. Aim: The aim of the study was to evaluate MIC and MBC of herbal extracts of Azadirachta indica, Curcuma longa, and Green Tea Against Enterococcus faecalis. Methodology: The MIC and MBC of extracts of A . indica (neem), C. longa (turmeric), and Green Tea were evaluated to establish them as standard root canal irrigants against E. faecalis using agar well diffusion method. Statistical Analysis Used: The collected data were statistically analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software. Results: The present study found that green tea exhibited the most substantial antimicrobial activity among the tested herbal extracts, which was comparable to chlorhexidine. Although A. indica and C. longa required higher concentrations for effectiveness, their antimicrobial properties were also apparent. Conclusions: Within the constraints of this study, it can be concluded that green tea could be considered a promising alternative to chlorhexidine in treating endodontic infections due to its substantial antimicrobial activity against E. faecalis at lower concentrations.

Turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) extract (CLE) has been shown to elicit several pharmacological properties and is widely used in Asian traditional medicine. Herein, we assessed the impact of CLE on airway inflammation in BALB/c mice and A549 cells to clarify the underlying mechanism. An asthmatic mouse model was established by administering ovalbumin (OVA). CLE (100 or 300 mg/kg/day) was orally administered daily from days 18 to 23, with dexamethasone (3 mg/kg/day) used as the positive control. Human airway epithelial cells, A549, were stimulated using recombinant tumor necrosis factor-α. The CLE100 and CLE400 groups exhibited a significant downregulation in eosinophil counts, cytokine levels, and immunoglobulin-E levels. Moreover, CLE administration dose-dependently suppressed oxidative stress and airway inflammation in the lung tissue. CLE administration inhibited the phosphorylation of mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) and the expression and activity of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-9. In vitro, CLE treatment reduced mRNA levels of proinflammatory cytokines, MAPK phosphorylation, and the expression and activity of MMP-2 and MMP-9. Additionally, 50 µg/mL CLE and 2.5 µg/mL curcumin showed similar anti-inflammatory effects. Collectively, our findings revealed that CLE could suppress airway inflammation in asthmatic mice and A549 cells via oxidative stress-driven MAPK/MMPs signaling, suggesting that CLE could be developed as a potential treatment option for patients with asthma.

Glioblastoma is a malignant neoplasm that develops in the central nervous system and is characterized by high rates of cell proliferation and invasion, presenting resistance to treatments and a poor prognosis. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a therapeutic modality that can be applied in oncological cases and stands out for being less invasive. Photosensitizers (PS) of natural origin gained prominence in PDT. Curcumin (CUR) is a natural compound that has been used in PDT, considered a promising PS. In this work, we evaluated the effects of PDT-mediated CUR and near-infrared radiation (NIR) in glioblastoma cells. Through trypan blue exclusion analysis, we chose the concentration of 5 µM of CUR and the dose of 2 J/cm2 of NIR that showed better responses in reducing the viable cell number in the C6 cell line and did not show cytotoxic/cytostatic effects in the HaCat cell line. Our results show that there is a positive interaction between CUR and NIR as a PDT model since there was an increase in ROS levels, a decrease in cell proliferation, increase in cytotoxicity with cell death by autophagy and necrosis, in addition to the presence of oxidative damage to proteins. These results suggest that the use of CUR and NIR is a promising strategy for the antitumor application of PDT.

This study showed that a polylactide (PLA)-based composite filled with nanostructured hydroxyapatite (HAp) and a natural extract from the rhizome of Curcuma longa L. could provide an alternative to commonly used fossil-based plasticsfor food packaging. The incorporation of HAp into the PLA matrix had a positive effect on improving selected properties of the composites; the beneficial effect could be enhanced by introducing a green modifier in the form of an extract. Prior to the fabrication of the composite, the filler was characterized in terms of morphology and composition, and the composite was then fully characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), Raman and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and the mechanical, thermal, thermomechanical, and optical properties were investigated. The proposed material exhibits antioxidant properties against DPPH radicals and antibacterial performance against Escherichia coli (E. coli). The results showed that the nanocomposite has the highest antioxidant and antibacterial properties for 10 wt% HAp with an average diameter of rod-shaped structures below 100 nm. In addition, the introduction of turmeric extract had a positive effect on the tensile strength of the nanocomposites containing 1 and 5% HAp. As the resulting material adsorbs light in a specific wavelength range, it can be used in the medical sector, food-packaging, or coatings.

Overuse of artificial chemical fertilizers could be detrimental to the environment. Utilizing beneficial microorganisms as biofertilizers is a sustainable technique that promotes soil health, crop yield, and ecosystem preservation. Curcuma longa L. is utilized as a medication since it has its antibacterial, anti-microbial, and anti-tumor characteristics, which reduce inflammation and hasten wound healing. The effect of E. cloacae strain MSR1, which is common in the roots of alfalfa grown in the Al-Ahsaa region, on C. longa plants is being investigated. C. longa rhizomes were planted under greenhouse conditions after being submerged in a solution of E. cloacae strain MSR1 (OD 500) or water treatment as a control for 12 hours. After 240 days of growing, ten randomly selected plants from each treatment were collected, and the vegetative growth and yield metrics were assessed. To investigate how E. cloacae influences C. longa production and chemical composition (photosynthetic pigment, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and curcuminoid), measurements were conducted as well as genes diketide-CoA and curcumin synthases genes. Our research showed that C. longa's growth and yield were favorably impacted by E. cloacae. Significant increases in the related plants' chlorophyll a,b, carotenoid, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium levels were likewise a reflection of the enhanced effects shown in the growth and yield parameters. Treatment with E. cloacae raised the curcuminoid's three sub-components' compositions to varying degrees: bisdemethoxycurcumin, demethoxycurcumin, and curcumin. Comparing E. cloacae treated plants to the control, high expression levels of the genes diketide-CoA and curcumin synthase-1, -2, and 3 were also found. The treatment of E. cloacae is a good biostimulant candidate for boosting growth and yield as well as raising the medicinal qualities of C. longa, according to the overall results.

The escalating prevalence of obesity poses significant health challenges due to its direct association with various diseases. Most existing medications, such as appetite suppressants and fat absorption inhibitors, suffer from limited effectiveness and undesirable side effects. Here, inspired by the versatile metabolic effects of turmeric, we developed a naturally derived nanoformulation of "Reconstructed Turmeric-derived Nanovesicles (Rec-tNVs)" for obesity treatment. Employing quantitative nanoflow cytometry, a four-orders-of-magnitude increase in curcumin content (∼108 molecules per particle) was identified in individual Rec-tNVs compared to their ultracentrifugation-isolated counterparts. Rec-tNVs, featuring highly aggregated curcumin arrangements and other coencapsulated bioactive compounds, demonstrated a dose-dependent lipid-lowering effect in mature 3T3-L1 cells by promoting lipolysis, suppressing lipogenesis, inducing adipocyte browning, and triggering apoptosis after internalization via multiple pathways. In vivo experiments revealed that Rec-tNVs alleviated obesity more effectively than free curcumin and achieved weight reductions of 18.68 and 14.56% through intragastric and subcutaneous delivery, respectively, in high-fat-diet mouse models over a four-week treatment period. These effects were attributed to targeted actions on adipose tissues and systemic impacts on metabolism and gut microbiota composition. Overall, this study underscores the multifaceted antiobesity efficacy of Rec-tNVs, and offers a promising paradigm for developing plant-derived nanovesicle-based therapeutics.

Inter-appointment pain (IAP) is a subtype of postoperative pain which occurs between endodontic appointments. It may begin within a few hours after the first appointment and may continue for several days. Apart from mechanical instrumentation and thorough irrigation, intracanal medicaments play a central role in the disinfection of root canals and thus decreasing IAP. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of Curcuma Longa as an intracanal medicament on IAP in patients with symptomatic irreversible pulpitis (SIP). One hundred healthy adult patients having SIP in one of their single-rooted maxillary or mandibular teeth participated in this randomized, parallel, single-blinded clinical trial. After thorough biomechanical preparation, the root canals were randomly medicated with one of the following medicaments, Control (no medicament), Calcium Hydroxide, triple antibiotic paste (TAP), and Curcuma Longa. The pain was recorded using Visual analog scale at 4 h, 24 h, and every day until the seventh day. Data were analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis, Mann-Whitney U, and Wilcoxon signed-rank tests. No statistical difference in pain scores was observed between Calcium Hydroxide, TAP or Curcuma Longa groups. It can be concluded that Curcuma Longa, Calcium hydroxide, and TAP are equally effective in controlling IAP.

Aim: Compare the efficacy of triple antibiotic paste (TAP), herbal extracts, and camphorated monochlorophenol (CMCP) as intracanal medicaments against Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis) in deciduous molars. Materials and methods: A total of 60 samples were collected from canals of first and second molars of 4-10-year-old children, with more than two-thirds root length, and fitting the inclusion criteria. Samples were collected at three intervals-S1 was collected just after access opening, S2 was collected after biomechanical preparation (BMP) and irrigation, and just before placement of medicament. Randomization was done to place the medicaments into three groups: group I-CMCP, group II-TAP, and group III-herbal combination. Sample S3 was taken 48 hours after removal of medicament from the canals. The collected samples were transported via Amies media to the laboratory, where they were anaerobically incubated for 24 hours. Growth of E. Faecalis was observed, and manual counting of the colony-forming unit (CFU) was done. The change in CFU in all samples was calculated, and the results were statistically analyzed. Results: The results show that there is a change from S1 (TAP = 118.67 ± 122.48, herbal = 109.07 ± 106.43; CMCP = 110.73 ± 120.53) to S2 (TAP = 34.13 ± 63.47; herbal = 27.67 ± 39.39; CMCP = 16.40 ± 26.32) and S3 (TAP = 12.33 ± 24.82; herbal = 4.73 ± 12.78; CMCP = 3.40 ± 7.12). It is seen that there is a significant difference seen from S1 to S2 in all three groups (p ≤ 0.05) using repeated measure analysis of variance (ANOVA) test. This shows that all three medicaments were effective in reducing bacterial counts of E. Faecalis from sample S1 (pre) to S3 (post) significantly after exposure to root canal bacterial flora for 48 hours (2 days). The pairwise comparison of the change in CFU within each group, S1-S3, also shows significant changes. There is a significant decrease in CFU seen from S1 to S2 and S1 to S3 but not from S2 to S3 for all three groups, which was evaluated using the post hoc Bonferroni test. It was also observed that in between the canals, although there was a change from S1 to S3 in terms of the CFU, there was no significant difference in the decrease in the bacterial count when intercanal comparison was made. There was, however, a change that was seen to be significant when values from each canal were compared from S1 to S3. Conclusion: All three medicaments have successfully shown a decrease in the numbers of E. faecalis, which the study aimed at checking. Although the effect varied intergroups, it was mild, so herbal alternatives could be used instead of antibiotics and CMCP. Also, because the local application is effective in controlling interappointment flare-ups, the medicaments can be successfully given without having to prescribe systemic antibiotics.
