BACKGROUND: Although considerable research has been conducted on post-COVID-19 syndrome (PCS), cognitive symptoms, particularly those related to language, are still not well understood. AIMS: To provide a detailed quantitative and qualitative analysis of language performance in PCS patients using a comprehensive set of semantic and verbal production tasks. METHODS & PROCEDURES: The study involved 195 PCS patients aged 26-64 years and 50 healthy controls aged 25-61 years. Participants were assessed using two semantic tasks, three naming tasks and four types of verbal fluency tasks, designed to evaluate different aspects of language processing. OUTCOMES & RESULTS: PCS patients demonstrated significantly poorer performance compared with controls across all verbal fluency tasks. This was evident in both the total number of words generated and their types, with patients tending to choose more easily accessible words. In naming tasks, the pattern of errors was similar in both groups, although patients showed a higher number of non-responses and made more errors, reflecting difficulties in word retrieval. The analysis highlighted the impact of factors such as stimulus availability, educational level and cognitive reserve on performance. Notably, younger patients performed worse than older, a paradoxical trend also observed in previous research. CONCLUSIONS & IMPLICATIONS: These findings reveal significant word retrieval difficulties in PCS patients, suggesting that cognitive impairment related to language may be more pronounced than previously understood. The results underscore the need for a thorough evaluation of language functions in PCS patients and the development of more targeted and individualized language rehabilitation strategies to address these specific challenges. WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS: What is already known on the subject Studies on the cognitive characteristics of CPS have focused mainly on broad-spectrum neuropsychological assessments covering all cognitive functions. However, there are very few studies analysing oral production with specific lexical and semantic system tasks. Furthermore, no work has specifically included tasks assessing semantic processing or conducted qualitative analyses of the psycholinguistic variables affecting performance. Such analyses could undoubtedly help clarify the nature of the language impairments in patients with PCS. What this paper adds to the existing knowledge This study explores in depth the evaluation and analysis of the oral production of patients with PCS using several lexical and semantic tasks. In addition, psycholinguistic variables are analysed that could undoubtedly help clarify the nature of the language impairments in patients with PCS. What are the potential or actual clinical implications of this work? The study allows the identification of specific lexical-semantic deficits in the spoken language in patients with this PCS. A more detailed assessment of the oral language of these patients, keeping in mind the psycholinguistic variables that may affect the performance, will facilitate the design of more efficient and individualized rehabilitation programmes.

Introduction: We investigated the agreement between automated and gold-standard manual transcriptions of telephone chatbot-based semantic verbal fluency testing. Methods: We examined 78 cases from the Screening over Speech in Unselected Populations for Clinical Trials in AD (PROSPECT-AD) study, including cognitively normal individuals and individuals with subjective cognitive decline, mild cognitive impairment, and dementia. We used Bayesian Bland-Altman analysis of word count and the qualitative features of semantic cluster size, cluster switches, and word frequencies. Results: We found high levels of agreement for word count, with a 93% probability of a newly observed difference being below the minimally important difference. The qualitative features had fair levels of agreement. Word count reached high levels of discrimination between cognitively impaired and unimpaired individuals, regardless of transcription mode. Discussion: Our results support the use of automated speech recognition particularly for the assessment of quantitative speech features, even when using data from telephone calls with cognitively impaired individuals in their homes. Semantic and phonemic verbal fluency tests are widely used neuropsychological assessments of executive functions and language skills and are easy to administer. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of age, education, and gender on semantic and phonemic verbal fluency tests and to establish normative data for Turkish adults aged between 18 and 86 years. The results revealed significant main effects of age and education on all subscores of verbal fluency tests. Furthermore, an interaction effect between age and education was observed on semantic fluency and letter K fluency scores. While no significant differences were found among the 18-29, 30-39, and 40-49 age groups in any of the subscores, performance on the tests decreased with increasing age. Significant differences were observed among all education groups in all subscores. No main or interaction effects of gender were found on any subscore. These normative data could prove useful in clinical and research settings for the assessment of cognitive impairment.

Objective: This study aims to investigate the activation of frontotemporal functional brain areas in patients with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) during a Verbal Fluency Task (VFT), and to compare their brain functional connectivity in a resting state with that of healthy controls. The goal is to deepen our understanding of the neuropathological mechanisms underlying OCD. Methods: 32 patients with OCD and 32 controls matched for age, gender, handedness, and years of education participated in this study, they were divided into OCD group and healthy comtrol group. We conducted VFT task tests and 10-minute resting state tests on both groups by using functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS). The VFT was utilized to assess the activation (beta values) and the integral and centroid values of the frontal and bilateral temporal lobes, including brain areas BA9 and 46 (dorsolateral prefrontal cortex), BA10 (frontal pole), BA45 (inferior frontal gyrus), BA21 (middle temporal gyrus), and BA22 (superior temporal gyrus). We evaluated the functional connectivity levels of these areas during the resting state. Differences in these measures between OCD patients and healthy controls were analyzed using two-sample independent t-tests and non-parametric Mann-Whitney U tests. Results: During VFT, OCD had smaller integral values(z=5.371, p<0.001; t=4.720, p<0.001), and larger centroid values(t=-2.281, p=0.026; z=-2.182, p=0.029) compared to healthy controls, along with a reduced number of activated channels detected by fNIRS. Additionally, activation values (ß) in various functional brain areas, including BA9, BA46, BA10, BA45, BA21, and BA22, were significantly lower in the OCD group (all p< 0.01). In the resting state, notable disparities in functional connectivity were observed between the inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) in the OCD group, in comparison to the control group. Specifically, there was a significant increase in connectivity between the left IFG and right DLPFC, suggesting the presence of altered connectivity patterns in these areas. Conclusions: The study highlights significant disparities in neural activation and functional connectivity between OCD patients and healthy controls during VFT. Specifically, reduced activation was noted in the frontal and bilateral temporal lobes of OCD patients, alongside alterations in resting-state functional connectivity between the IFG and DLPFC. These findings contribute to our understanding of the neurobiological underpinnings of OCD and may guide future therapeutic strategies.

OBJECTIVE: Semantic verbal fluency (SVF) engages cognitive functions such as executive function, mental flexibility, and semantic memory. Left frontal and temporal lobes, particularly the left inferior frontal gyrus (IFG), are crucial for SVF. This study investigates SVF and associated neural processing in older adults with mild SVF impairment and the relationship between structural abnormalities in the left IFG and functional activation during SVF in those individuals. METHODS: Fifty-four elderly individuals with modest level of mild cognitive impairment whose global cognition were preserved to normal but exhibited mild SVF impairment were participated. Prefrontal oxyhemoglobin (HbO2) activation and frontal cortical thickness were collected from the participants using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and brain MRI, respectively. We calculated the ß coefficient of HbO2 activation induced by tasks, and performed correlation analysis between SVF induced HbO2 activation and cortical thickness in frontal areas. RESULTS: We observed increased prefrontal activation during SVF task compared to the resting and control task. The activation distinct to SVF was identified in the midline superior and left superior prefrontal regions (p<0.05). Correlation analysis revealed an inverse relationship between SVF-specific activation and cortical thickness in the left IFG, particularly in pars triangularis (r(54)=-0.304, p=0.025). CONCLUSION: The study contributes to understanding the relationship between reduced cortical thickness in left IFG and increased functional activity in cognitively normal individuals with mild SVF impairment, providing implications on potential compensatory mechanisms for cognitive preservation.

BACKGROUND: Patients with chronic insomnia exhibit varying degrees of cognitive dysfunction. Functional connectivity of different brain regions contributes to the understanding of underlying cognitive processes in the cerebral cortex. However, this has not yet been studied in patients with chronic insomnia. This study aimed to elucidate the differences between brain activity patterns in patients with chronic insomnia and healthy controls (HCs) using a verbal fluency task (VFT). METHODS: We recruited 84 patients with chronic insomnia and 81 HCs. Oxy-haemoglobin (Oxy-Hb) concentrations in the brains of the participants were monitored using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) while performing the VFT. RESULTS: During the task period, no significant difference was observed between the VFT results of the two groups; patients with chronic insomnia showed significantly less cortical activation in haemodynamic responses of oxy-Hb at channels and brain regions mainly located in the prefrontal cortex compared to HCs (FDR-corrected p < 0.05). Moreover, the average channel-to-channel connectivity strength of patients in the chronic insomnia group was lower than that of those in the HC group (t = -6.717, p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Our study provides neurological evidence for the dynamic detection of executive function in patients with chronic insomnia. Compared to HCs, patients with chronic insomnia exhibit weaker levels of brain activity and reduced task-related functional connectivity.

Corpus callosum dysgenesis (CCD) is a congenital brain malformation that occurs when the development of the corpus callosum is disrupted, either partially or completely. The cognitive outcomes in individuals with CCD vary greatly, but generally the neuropsychological profile is characterised by slow processing speed, poor transfer of interhemispheric sensory-motor information, and impaired complex problem solving. Core language skills are often preserved in CCD, but there is some evidence that complex language may be impaired. Thus, the current study sought to examine whether spontaneous speech output was reduced in a cohort of individuals with CCD compared to age-matched controls. We further explored a series of factors that may be contributing to poor spontaneous speech in CCD, such as difficulties generating, selecting, and sequencing ideas for expression, as well as apathy and slowed processing speed. A cohort of 25 individuals with CCD and 39 neurotypical controls were enrolled in this study. Participants completed a picture description task to measure spontaneous speech output, alongside a series of cognitive and language baseline tests. Verbal and nonverbal fluency tasks gauged idea generation and sequencing, and sentence-level selection tasks measured idea selection. We found that, despite having largely intact core language skills, individuals with CCD produced significantly less spontaneous speech on the picture description task than controls. This language profile may be described as "adynamic". Further, we found that poor spontaneous speech output in CCD was related to problems generating ideas for expression, as individuals with CCD performed below controls on the verbal and nonverbal fluency tasks. Exploratory analyses revealed that apathy and slowed processing speed may be contributing factors. Adynamia in CCD is a novel finding that may be an intervention target for improving communication skills in this population.

One of the most prevalent psychiatric disorders is major depressive disorder (MDD), which increases the probability of suicidal ideation or untimely demise. Abnormal frontal hemodynamic changes detected by functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) during verbal fluency task (VFT) have the potential to be used as an objective indicator for assessing clinical symptoms. However, comprehensive quantitative and objective assessment instruments for individuals who exhibit symptoms suggestive of depression remain undeveloped. Drawing from a total of 467 samples in a large-scale dataset comprising 289 MDD patients and 178 healthy controls, fNIRS measurements were obtained throughout the VFT. To identify unique MDD biomarkers, this research introduced a data representation approach for extracting spatiotemporal features from fNIRS signals, which were subsequently utilized as potential predictors. Machine learning classifiers (e.g., Gradient Boosted Decision Trees (GBDT) and Multilayer Perceptron) were implemented to assess the ability to predict selected features. The mean and standard deviation of the cross-validation indicated that the GBDT model, when combined with the 180-feature pattern, distinguishes patients with MDD from healthy controls in the most effective manner. The accuracy of correct classification for the test set was 0.829 ± 0.053, with an AUC of 0.895 (95 % CI: 0.864-0.925) and a sensitivity of 0.914 ± 0.051. Channels that made the most important contribution to the identification of MDD were identified using Shapley Additive Explanations method, located in the frontopolar area and the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, as well as pars triangularis Broca's area. Assessment of abnormal prefrontal activity during the VFT in MDD serves as an objectively measurable biomarker that could be utilized to evaluate cognitive deficits and facilitate early screening for MDD. The model suggested in this research could be applied to large-scale case-control fNIRS datasets to detect unique characteristics of MDD and offer clinicians an objective biomarker-based analytical instrument to assist in the evaluation of suspicious cases.

OBJECTIVE: The effects of stimulation frequency on verbal fluency (VF) following subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS) in Parkinson's disease (PD) are not well understood. The present study examines the impact stimulation frequency has on VF following bilateral STN-DBS in PD. METHODS: Prospective study of 38 consecutive patients with PD with low frequency STN-DBS (LFS) (n = 10) and high frequency STN-DBS (HFS) (n = 14), and a non-operated PD control group consisting of patients with fluctuating response to dopaminergic medication (n = 14) homogeneous in age, education, disease duration, and global cognitive function. Patients were evaluated on VF tasks (letter, semantic, action verbs, alternating). A one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was conducted to assess distinctions between groups. Pre- and post-surgical comparisons of fluencies were performed for operated groups. A mixed ANOVA was applied to the data to evaluate the interaction between treatment (HFS vs. LFS) and time (pre- vs. post-surgery). Strategy use (clustering and switching) was evaluated. RESULTS: Semantic and letter fluency performance revealed significant differences between HFS and LFS groups. Pre- and post-surgical comparisons revealed HFS negatively affected letter, semantic, and action fluencies, but LFS had no effect on VF. No interaction effect or main effect of treatment was found. Main effect of time was significant for semantic and action fluencies indicating a decrease in postoperative fluency performance. Patients with LFS produced larger average cluster sizes than patients with HFS. CONCLUSION: LFS may be less detrimental to VF, but these findings suggest that VF decline following STN-DBS is not caused by stimulation frequency alone.

Verbal fluency (VF) has been proposed as a putative neurocognitive endophenotype in schizophrenia (SZ) and bipolar disorder (BD). However, this hypothesis has not been examined using a longitudinal family approach. We conducted a five-group, comparative study. The sample comprised 323 adult participants, including 81 BD patients, 47 unaffected relatives of BD BD-Rel), 76 SZ patients, 40 unaffected relatives of SZ (SZ-Rel), and 79 genetically unrelated healthy controls (HC). All subjects were assessed twice with semantic VF (sem-VF) and phonological VF (ph-VF) tests over a 2-year follow-up period. ANCOVAs controlling for age and years of education were used to compare performance across groups. Patients with SZ and BD and their unaffected relatives showed sem-VF and ph-VF deficits at baseline, which persisted over time (all, p < 0.05). Moreover, BD-Rel showed an intermediate performance between SZ and HC. A repeated-measures ANOVA revealed no significant differences in the between-group trajectories comparison (p > 0.05). Our findings support that VF may represent a neurocognitive endophenotype for SZ and BD. Further longitudinal, family studies are warranted to confirm this preliminary evidence.

Although many neuroimaging studies have evaluated changes in the prefrontal cortex during mindfulness-based interventions, most of these studies were cross-sectional studies of skilled participants or involved pre-post comparisons before and after a single session. While functional near-infrared spectroscopy is a useful tool to capture changes in the hemodynamic response of the prefrontal cortex during continuous mindfulness-based intervention, its ability to detect the accumulated effects of continuous mindfulness-based intervention is currently unclear. We investigated whether a 12-wk online mindfulness-based intervention changed the hemodynamic response of the prefrontal cortex during a verbal fluency task. Eighty-two healthy university students were randomly allocated to a 12-wk online mindfulness-based intervention group or a wait-list control group. The integral values of oxygenated hemoglobin measured using functional near-infrared spectroscopy before and after the intervention were compared to the values in the wait-list group. The intervention condition showed significantly greater functional near-infrared spectroscopy signal activation than the control condition; however, the effect sizes before and after the intervention were small. Thus, continuous mindfulness-based intervention could alter prefrontal cortex function, and functional near-infrared spectroscopy could be useful for measuring the accumulated effects of continuous mindfulness-based interventions. With a better understanding of the association between mindfulness and functional near-infrared spectroscopy signals, functional near-infrared spectroscopy can be used for biofeedback analyses.

AIM: This observational longitudinal study aimed to explore the risk factors for disabilities in older Japanese individuals with diabetes at a frailty clinic, an outpatient clinic specializing in comprehensive geriatric assessments for older patients. METHODS: The outcome was the onset of disability as a new certification of long-term care needs in outpatients aged ≥65 years. Multivariable Cox regression analyses examined the independent associations between the onset of disability and the variables that reached significance in the bivariate analysis, after adjusting for age and sex, years of education, and certification of need for support. RESULTS: A total of 182 participants (mean age 77.8 years, 59.9% female) were included in the study. During a mean follow-up period of 1070 days, 28 patients (15.4%) developed disabilities. Multivariable analysis showed that poor glycemic control (higher levels of glycosylated albumin and HbA1c), frailty as measured by the Clinical Frailty Scale (CFS), cognitive decline as assessed by the revised Hasegawa Dementia Scale (especially "5 object recall" and verbal fluency as assessed by the number of "vegetable names"), poor adherence to medications, and reduced muscle mass were significantly associated with the development of disability. Multivariable Cox regression analyses revealed independent and significant associations between the development of disability and HbA1c ≥7.5%, CFS ≥4, and generating vegetable names≤9. CONCLUSION: In identifying older patients with diabetes who are at risk of developing disabilities, it may be useful to evaluate glycemic control, CFS, cognition, and medication adherence. Verbal fluency tests using vegetable names may serve as simple tools for assessing the risk of disability. Geriatr Gerontol Int 2024; 24: 1030-1038.

BACKGROUND: Linguistic deficits are common across neurological and neurodegenerative disorders. Currently there are limited neuropsychological norms available for Spanish-speaking adults residing in the U.S. OBJECTIVE: To generate norms for two verbal fluency tests and the Boston Naming Test (BNT) in a Spanish-speaking population in the U.S., with adjustments for demographic and cultural variables. METHODS: The sample consisted of 245 adults from the U.S. Participants completed phonological and semantic verbal fluency tests and the BNT. A standardized four-step statistical procedure was used. RESULTS: For the phoneme F, interactions between Spanish proficiency, age, and education arose. Better performance on phonemes A, S, and M was related to education. Spanish proficiency, acculturation, and time in the U.S. were associated with the phonemes S, A, P, M, and R. An age by education interaction was found for phonemes M and R. The FAS and PMR triads were related to age, sex, time in U.S., and Spanish proficiency. For the semantic verbal fluency tests, an interaction between education and Spanish proficiency arose. For the BNT, test scores were related to education, and significant interactions were also found based on education's interaction with Spanish proficiency and acculturation. CONCLUSION: This study highlights the importance of accounting for sociodemographic and acculturative factors when developing normative data for verbal fluency tests and the BNT for dominant Spanish-speaking adults in the U.S. These sociodemographically-adjusted norms will help improve accuracy of diagnosis and interpretation of linguistic test performance in Spanish speakers living in the U.S.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown a lower hemodynamic response in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) during cognitive tasks. However, the mechanism underlying impaired hemodynamic and neural responses to cognitive tasks in MDD patients remains unclear. Succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) is a key biomarker of mitochondrial energy generation, and it can affect the hemodynamic response via the neurovascular coupling effect. In the current study, cerebral hemodynamic responses were detected during verbal fluency tasks (VFTs) via functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and SDH protein levels were examined in serum from MDD patients to quickly identify whether these hemodynamic alterations were related to mitochondrial energy metabolism. METHODS: Fifty patients with first-episode drug-naïve MDD and 42 healthy controls (HCs) were recruited according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. The 17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (17-HDRS), Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAMA) and Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology-Self Report (IDS-SR) were used to assess the clinical symptoms of the patients. All participants underwent fNIRS measurements to evaluate cerebral hemodynamic responses in the frontal and temporal cortex during VFTs; moreover, SDH protein levels were measured using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. RESULTS: Activation in the frontal-temporal brain region during the VFTs was lower in patients with MDD than in HCs. The SDH level in the serum of MDD patients was also significantly lower than that in HCs (p = 0.003), which significantly affected right lateral frontal (p = 0.025) and right temporal (p = 0.022) lobe activation. Both attenuated frontal-temporal activation during the VFTs (OR = 1.531) and lower SDH levels (OR = 1.038) were risk factors for MDD. CONCLUSIONS: MDD patients had lower cerebral hemodynamic responses to VFTs; this was associated with mitochondrial dysfunction, as indicated by SDH protein levels. Furthermore, attenuated hemodynamic responses in frontotemporal regions and lower SDH levels increased the risk for MDD. LIMITATIONS: The sample size is relatively small. SDH protein levels in peripheral blood may not necessarily reflect mitochondrial energy generation in the central nervous system.

BACKGROUND: Executive dysfunction occurs in 15% to 20% of multiple sclerosis (MS) patients and verbal fluency tests are frequently used to assess this deficit. The Word List Generation (WLG) is one of the most used measures in MS. This study aims to compare the performance of WLG of MS patients and healthy controls and to analyze the influence of clinical and demographic factors on the performance of MS patients. METHODS: One hundred and nine MS patients and an age- and gender-matched group of 138 healthy controls were evaluated with WLG Portuguese version, as well as other tests from the Brief Repeatable Battery of Neuropsychological Tests (BRBN-T), subtests from WAIS, a phonemic fluency test (M, R, and P), and measures of psychological symptomatology and cognitive fatigue. The MS group (70.6% females) was mainly diagnosed with RRMS (89.2%). RESULTS: The MS group performed significantly lower than healthy controls on the WLG. In the MS group, this performance was significantly correlated with the level of education. Significant differences were found between the two groups regarding cognitive fatigue, with MS patients reporting higher levels than healthy controls. However, this variable was not related to the performance on the WLG for MS patients. CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that MS is associated with large levels of cognitive decline on the phonemic verbal fluency tests. These results are consistent with other studies and highlight the importance of verbal fluency and cognitive speed measures in the neuropsychological assessment of MS. Deficits on this task seem to be highly related to the level of education of the patient rather than other demographic and clinical factors.

To test a Chinese character version of the phonemic verbal fluency task in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) and assess the verbal fluency deficiency pattern in TLE with and without hippocampal sclerosis, a cross-sectional study was conducted including 30 patients with TLE and hippocampal sclerosis (TLE-HS), 28 patients with TLE and without hippocampal sclerosis (TLE-NHS), and 29 demographically matched healthy controls (HC). Both sexes were enrolled. Participants finished a Chinese character verbal fluency (VFC) task during functional MRI. The activation/deactivation maps, functional connectivity, degree centrality, and community features of the left frontal and temporal regions were compared. A neural network classification model was applied to differentiate TLE-HS and TLE-NHS using functional statistics. The VFC scores were correlated with semantic fluency in HC while correlated with phonemic fluency in TLE-NHS. Activation and deactivation deficiency was observed in TLE-HS and TLE-NHS (p < 0.001, k ≥ 10). Functional connectivity, degree centrality, and community features of anterior inferior temporal gyri were impaired in TLE-HS and retained or even enhanced in TLE-NHS (p < 0.05, FDR-corrected). The functional connectivity was correlated with phonemic fluency (p < 0.05, FDR-corrected). The neural network classification reached an area under the curve of 0.90 in diagnosing hippocampal sclerosis. The VFC task is a Chinese phonemic verbal fluency task suitable for clinical application in TLE. During the VFC task, functional connectivity of phonemic circuits was impaired in TLE-HS and was enhanced in TLE-NHS, representing a compensative phonemic searching strategy applied by patients with TLE-NHS.

INTRODUCTION: The full assessment of bilingual children often involves at least one language for which formal vocabulary tests are lacking and which the examiner does not speak. We examined, in a sample of children with typical development (TD), whether a semantic verbal fluency task, typically used in research as a measure of executive function, could be used in the place of a formal vocabulary test to estimate vocabulary knowledge when formal tests are not available. METHOD: 113 TD monolingual French speakers and TD bilinguals and with varying degrees of exposure to French, age 6 to 17 years, completed tests of vocabulary knowledge and semantic verbal fluency. A subset of 64 participants spoke French and English and were tested in both languages. Verbal fluency measures calculated using a traditional method which uses specific rules for superordinate categories and for animals of different sex and age and a simplified scoring method which simply counts all words produced, included the total number of words produced in each language, Total Vocabulary and Conceptual Vocabulary measures combining both languages, as well as analyses of lexical composition and word frequency within the study sample. RESULTS: Linear regressions revealed that the number of words produced predicted vocabulary size in a language-specific way, with slightly stronger predictions made by the simplified scoring method. As expected, bilinguals produced more words and more unique words in their language of greater exposure, while different exposure groups were equivalent in measures combining both languages, including their Total vocabulary and Conceptual vocabulary. Producing unusual words (infrequently produced in the study sample) indicated higher vocabulary scores. CONCLUSIONS: This study supports the use of the verbal fluency task as a quick and simple tool to obtain a rough estimate of vocabulary size in TD monolinguals and bilinguals. This tool shows promise as well in clinical work with other populations, subject to further verification.

OBJECTIVE: The production of words in verbal fluency tests relies heavily on executive functions and linguistic abilities. New tests such as the famous people fluency test can also be useful in clinical practice and research. This test, in which participants are asked to name so many famous people, has the potential to distinguish healthy individuals from participants with neurological disorders such as mild cognitive impairment or Alzheimer's disease. METHOD: The aim of this study was to determine the psychometric validity of the test (Study 1) and to provide normative data in the adult population of French Quebec for the famous people fluency test (Study 2). RESULTS: The results of the normative study, derived from a sample of 378 healthy individuals between the ages of 50 and 92, showed that age and educational level significantly influence performance on the test. Therefore, percentile ranks were calculated for performance on the famous people fluency test, stratified for these two variables. The results of Study 2 showed that the test differentiated the performance of healthy participants from the performance of participants with mild cognitive impairment or Alzheimer's disease. The results also showed that the famous people fluency test has adequate convergent validity, established with a semantic fluency test, and that the results showed good stability over time (test-retest validity). CONCLUSION: Norms and psychometric data for the famous people fluency test will improve the ability of clinicians and researchers to better recognize executive and language impairments associated with pathological conditions.

Porcine Liver Decomposition Product (PLDP) was obtained by treating pig liver homogenate with protease and filling it into capsules. We have already confirmed from three clinical trials that PLDP enhances visual memory and delays memory recall, and we believe that its activity is due to various phospholipids, including phosphatidylcholine (PC). In this study, we clinically evaluated PLDP for depressive symptoms caused by a decline in cognitive function. This clinical trial was conducted using the Revised Hasegawa Dementia Scale (HDS-R). The HDS-R (maximum score is 30 points) is a test similar to the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), which is commonly used in Japan. Dementia is suspected if the score falls below 20 on the HDS-R. Additionally, in a previous clinical trial, there was no change in scores in the placebo group after three doses of the HDS-R. In order to clearly confirm the effectiveness of PLDP, this study was conducted under stricter conditions (HDS-R points of 15 to 23) than previous clinical trials (all participants had scores of 20 or higher). Therefore, from ethical considerations, a clinical trial was conducted using the scores before PLDP administration as a control. In this study, PLDP was administered orally at 4 capsules per day, and the HDS-R was confirmed 2 and 4 weeks after administration. A significant increase in HDS-R scores was observed at 2 and 4 weeks after PLDP administration. Additionally, regarding each item of the HDS-R, PLDP significantly increased 2 and 4 weeks after oral administration for the question items assessing delayed recall, and the question item assessing verbal fluency tasks was recognized. From the above results, we confirmed the reproducibility of the effect of PLDP in improving the delayed recall of verbal memories. Furthermore, increasing scores on verbal fluency tasks suggest that PLDP may enhance frontal lobe function and prevent or improve depressive symptoms. The effects observed in this study may differ from the mechanisms of action of existing antidepressants, and we believe that this may lead to the discovery of new antidepressants.

INTRODUCTION: Semantic verbal fluency (SVF) is a widely used measure of frontal executive function and access to semantic memory. SVF scoring metrics include the number of unique words generated, perseverations, intrusions, semantic cluster size and switching between clusters, and scores vary depending on the language the test is administered in. In this paper, we review the existing normative data for Turkish, the main metrics used for scoring SVF data in Turkish, and the most frequently used categories. METHOD: We conducted a systematic review of peer-reviewed papers using Medline, EMBASE, PsycInfo, Web of Science, and two Turkish databases, TR-Dizin and Yok-Tez. Included papers contained data on the SVF performance of healthy adult native speakers of Turkish, and reported the categories used. Versions of the SVF that required participants to alternate categories were excluded. We extracted and tabulated demographics, descriptions of groups, metrics used, categories used, and sources of normative data. Studies were assessed for level of detail in reporting findings. RESULTS: 1400 studies were retrieved. After deduplication, abstract, full text screening, and merging of theses with their published versions, 121 studies were included. 114 studies used the semantic category "animal", followed by first names (N = 14, 12%). All studies reported word count. More complex measures were rare (perseverations: N = 12, 10%, clustering and switching: N = 5, 4%). Four of seven normative studies reported only word count, two also measured perseverations, and one reported category violations and perseverations. Two normative studies were published in English. CONCLUSIONS: There is a lack of normative Turkish SVF data with more complex metrics, such as clustering and switching, and a lack of normative data published in English. Given the size of the Turkish diaspora, normative SVF data should include monolingual and bilingual speakers. Limitations include a restriction to key English and Turkish databases.
