This study aimed to fortify cookies to be functional food by adding Clitoria ternatea flower (CT) at concentrations ranging from 0 to 8%. Sensory profiling identified 6% CT as optimal for organoleptic attributes. The addition of CT did not significantly impact protein, lipid, and ash content but decreased energy value and increased insoluble and soluble fibre levels. The inclusion of 6% CT had a significant effect on the overall total phenolic content (TPC), which increased compared to the control sample. Antioxidative activity analyses showed enhanced antioxidative activity in ABTS, DPPH, ORACFL, and PCL assays. The addition of 6% CT inhibited hydroperoxide production in cookies. However, over a period of 6 weeks, a significant rise in peroxide value was observed during the 4th and 6th weeks of storing fortified cookies. All assessed products met the high microbiological quality standards. The sensory evaluation scores showed that CT can create cookies with health benefits and a good overall acceptance score. The texture of the cookies gradually became softer, but no significant changes in visual appearance were observed. CT can be extensively used in baked cookies as a rich source of polyphenols with strong antioxidant properties and high fibre content, as well as a fortification source for the development of functional foods.

Surgical treatment of complex intestinal atresia is challenging. Moreover, multiple surgical techniques have been described to treat these congenital malformations. As no single/universal technique is useful for every patient, individualized surgical treatment for these complex cases is mandatory. Isolated apple peel atresia (type IIIb), in coexistence with other types of atresia, is a rare event with a poor functional prognosis, which is difficult to treat surgically. Furthermore, the ability to achieve good surgical results becomes more difficult in resource-limited health facilities, such as the Hospital Pediatrico Moctezuma (Mexico City). The objective of this case report of two full-term female newborns with isolated apple peel atresia and an apple peel malformation with distal type IV atresia is to describe the successful surgical technique used in these patients and how to deal with certain postsurgical complications.

BACKGROUND: Blueberries and apples exhibit favorable bioactivity and health benefits as a result of their rich phytochemicals. Natural phytochemicals exist in complex forms, but there are few reports on whether have additive, synergistic or antagonistic effects between different phytochemicals. The present study aimed to elucidate the synergistic effects of blueberry extract (BE) and apple peel extract (APE) together with respect to inhibiting the proliferation of HepG2 liver cancer cells. Meanwhile, phytochemical characterization of BE and APE was conducted by HPLC, and total antioxidant activity was determined via a cellular antioxidant activity assay, oxygen radical absorption capacity assay and peroxy radical scavenging capacity assay. RESULTS: The results showed that BE and APE were rich in phytochemicals and had potent antioxidant activities, which synergistically inhibited cell proliferation. In the bilateral combination, the dose reduction index value increased by two-fold, and the combination index value at 95% inhibition was less than 1. Additionally, BE + APE supplementation could promote the expression levels of p53 and c-myc genes. In conclusion, the BE and APE had strong antioxidant activity and exhibited synergistic inhibition against proliferation of HepG2 cells. CONCLUSION: The present study can provide a theoretical basis for the synergistic effect of different phytochemicals in health care. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

This paper proposes to apply a postharvest environmental stress to red apples, Malus domestica, variety Red Delicious in order to increase the polyphenols compounds (PP) content in their peels. The possibility of enhancing extractable PP provides a useful alternative for the use of discarded crops in the food industry. A great increase in PP was observed in response to light damage produced by the environmental stress applied in this work. Flavonols > anthocyanins > flavanols > dihydrochalcones > phenolic acids is the order in PP content. The interaction of the extracted PP from unstressed and stressed apple peels with beta-lactoglobulin (ß-LG) was characterized. A PP/ß-LG complex which was formed with one single binding site in the protein was determined. The interaction was spontaneous and enthalpy driven. PP extracted from unstressed samples had greater affinity for the protein than PP extracted from stressed samples, possibly due to the polar characteristic of anthocyanins. The results of this last study could provide a better understanding of the interaction between PP and ß-LG to incorporate them into functional foods.

In this study, a new approach to pesticide permeation through the apple peel into the pulp is discussed. The tested compounds can be classified, based on mode of action, as systemic (boscalid, cyprodinil, pirimicarb, propiconazole and tebuconazole) or contact (captan, cypermethrin and fludioxonil) pesticides. The barrier effect was assessed using a Franz flow-type vertical diffusion cell system. A residue analysis was performed using a modified quick, easy, cheap, efficient, rugged and safe (QuEChERS) extraction method coupled to gas chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS). The limits of detection (LODs) ranged between 2.6 µg kg-1 (pirimicarb) and 17 µg kg-1 (captan), with the coefficient of variability (CV) lower than 6%, while recoveries ranged from 85% (boscalid) to 112% (captan) at 0.1 and 1 mg kg-1 spiked levels. The highest peel penetration was observed for pirimicarb, captan and cyprodinil, with cumulative permeations of 90, 19 and 17 µg cm-2, respectively. The total absorption was in the range from 0.32% (tebuconazole) to 32% (pirimicarb). Only cypermethrin was not quantitatively detected in the pulp, and its use can be recommended in crop protection techniques. The obtained results indicate that molecular weight, octanol-water partition coefficient and water solubility are important parameters determining the process of pesticide absorption.

(1) Introduction: Apples are a source of bioactive substances, e.g., anthocyanidins and flavonols, and dietary fiber. Their highest concentrations are observed in the skin. Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a set of conditions originally associated with obesity. Excessive adipose tissue accompanying obesity leads to chronic inflammation and metabolic disorders, which result in the development of dyslipidemia, elevated blood pressure, and glucose levels. Thus, supplementation of apple peels, a source of antioxidant substances and fiber, could potentially be a method supporting the prevention of MetS. This paper summarizes the results of available research on the potential impact of apple peel supplementation on the components of MetS. (2) Results: The results from in vitro and animal model studies indicate a positive effect of apple peel supplementation on lipid profile, glucose levels, and blood pressure regulation mediators. Only one human study was performed, and it showed that the consumption of apple peels had an effect on endothelial function but not on other clinical parameters. At the moment, there are no results from observations on large groups of people available. (3) Conclusions: The results of in vitro and animal-model studies indicate the potential of apple peel supplementation in MetS prevention, but it has not been clinically confirmed in human studies. Conducting large human studies could allow a definite clarification of the role of apple peel supplementation in MetS prevention.

Extracting ursolic acid (UA) from plant resources using organic solvents is incompatible with food applications. To address this, in this study, 15 edible hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents (HDESs) were prepared to extract UA from apple peel, the extraction conditions were optimized, and the optimization strategies were compared. It was found that the solubility of UA in the HDESs can be 9 times higher than the traditional solvent such as ethanol. The response surface optimization concluded that temperature had the greatest effect on the extraction and the optimized test conditions obtained as follows: temperature of 49 °C, time of 32 min, solid-liquid ratio of 1:16.5 g/mL, respectively. Comparing the response surface methodology (RSM) and artificial neural networks (ANN), it was concluded that ANN has more accurate prediction ability than RSM. Overall, the HDESs are more effective and environmentally friendly than conventional organic solvents to extract UA. The results of this study will facilitate the further exploration of HDES in various food and pharmaceutical applications.

Freeze-dried apple peel powder (Fd-APP) was subjected to in vitro digestion and colonic fermentation to evaluate the variations in its phenolic composition, bioactivities (antioxidant activity, α-amylase, and α-glucosidase inhibition), and fecal metabolic outputs. A total of 88 phenolics were tentatively identified, of which 51 phenolic compounds were quantitated in Fd-APP sample extracts before digestion, and 34 were released during subsequent phases of digestion. Among these, phenolic acids showed the highest bio accessibility index (BI) of 68%, followed by flavonoids (63%) and anthocyanins (52%). The inhibitory functions of Fd-APP extract against α-amylase and α-glucosidase pre- and post-digestion were moderate and ranged from 41.88 to 44.08% and 35.23 to 41.13%, respectively. Additionally, the antioxidant activities revealed a significant (p ≤ 0.05) decline during the in vitro digestion. However, the colonic fermentation stage presented different products where the intact parent phenolic compounds present in Fd-APP were utilized by gut microbes and produced various phenolic metabolites such as 3- hydroxyphenyl acetic acid (3-HPAA), ferulic acid (FA), 3-(4-hydroxyphenyl) propionic acid (3,4 HPPA) and 4- hydroxybenzoic acid (4-HBA). Furthermore, colonic fermentation of Fd-APP accelerated the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), with acetic acid being the most prevalent (97.53 ± 9.09 mM). The decrease in pH of fermentation media to 4.3 significantly (p ≤ 0.05) enhanced counts of Bifidobacterium (10.27 log CFU/mL), which demonstrated the potential prebiotic effects of Fd-APP. These findings indicated that the consumption of apple peel as a constituent of novel functional foods may support and protect the intestinal microbiota and consequently promote human health.

Background: Apple pomace is a by-product of the fruit juice industry and comprises peel, seed, stem, and pulp tissues. This by-product contains dietary fibers, polyphenols, vitamins, and organic acids that can benefit human health and have a high potential as a dietary source. Baked products are well-known food types to humans and have a key role in feeding people worldwide. Nowadays, enriched products such as bread, cakes, and biscuits are available in stores. Different studies worldwide have been done about applying the by-products of the fruit juice industry in the bakery. Objective: This research aimed to evaluate apple peel (APE) and pulp (APU) powders separately as a partial substitute for wheat flour in cake production. Methods: Apple peel and pulp separately produced as the residual wastes of juicing were dried for 3 hours in oven (60°C). The dried pulp and peel were ground and sieved using a 60 µm mesh. In this research, chemical and physicochemical analyses were performed according to AACC (Approved Methods of the American Association of Cereal Chemists) and standard food analysis methods. Textural characteristic was analyzed by a texture analyzer (Brookfield CT3-10 Kg, US) equipped with an aluminum probe. Results: Different levels of APE and APU powders (10%, 20%, and 30 %) were used to enrich the cakes. The ash content, fat content, water adsorption capacity, and oil absorption capacity of the wheat flour were lower than APU and APE, whereas the moisture content, protein content, bulk density, and pH showed a reverse trend. Adding APU and APP to the cake formula increased total dietary fiber (TDF) from 4.14 % in the control sample to 27.71 % in the sample with 30 % apple peel powder (APE-30). The highest a* colorimetric parameter (redness) in the cake core was 3.82 in the APE-30 sample. The addition of APE and APU significantly increased the hardness, gumminess, and chewiness of the samples (p<0.05). APE-10 samples could improve the nutritional properties of the cakes without significant reduction (p>0.05) in overall acceptance compared to the control sample. Conclusion: The results of this research demonstrated that a partial replacement of the wheat flour with apple pulp and peel significantly increased the dietary fibers, especially insoluble dietary fiber, compared to the control sample. Apple pulp and apple peel powders had the potential for use in cake making as a good source of dietary fibers


Antecedentes: la pulpa de manzana es un subproducto de la industria del jugo de frutas y se compone de tejidos de cáscara, semillas, tallo y pulpa. Este subproducto contiene fibra dietética, polifenoles, vitaminas y ácidos orgánicos que pueden ser beneficiosos para la salud humana y tienen un alto potencial como fuente dietética. Los productos horneados son de tipos de alimentos bien conocidos para los seres humanos y son clave en la alimentación de las personas de todo el mundo. Hoy en día, los productos enriquecidos como pan, pasteles y galletas están disponibles en las tiendas. Se han hecho diferentes estudios en todo el mundo sobre la aplicación del subproducto de la industria del jugo de frutas en la panadería. Objetivo: El propósito de esta investigación fue evaluar los polvos de cáscara de manzana (APE) y pulpa (APU) como sustituto parcial de la harina de trigo en la producción de pasteles. Métodos: Cáscaras de manzana y pulpa producidas por separado como desechos residuales de jugos, se secaron durante 3 horas en el horno (60 °C). La pulpa seca y la cáscara fueron molidas y tamizadas usando una malla de 60 micras. En esta investigación el análisis químico y físico-químico realizado de acuerdo con el AACC (Aprobado Métodos de la Asociación Americana de Químicos del Cereales) y los métodos estándar de análisis de alimentos. La característica textural fue analizada por el analizador de textura (Brookfield CT3-10 Kg, US) equipado con una sonda de aluminio. Resultados: Se utilizaron diferentes niveles de polvos APE y APU (10, 20 and 30 %) para enriquecer los pasteles. La capacidad de absorción de ceniza, grasa, agua y aceite de la harina de trigo fue menor que la APU y APE, mientras que la humedad, la proteína, la densidad a granel y el pH mostraron una tendencia inversa. Además, APU y APE en fórmula de pastel, aumentaron la fibra dietética total (TDF) de 4.14 % en la muestra de control a 27.71 % en la muestra con un 30 % de polvo de pelar de manzana (APE-30). El parámetro más alto a* colorimétrico en núcleo de pastel fue de 3.82 (enrojecimiento) en la muestra APE-30. La adición de APE y APU aumentó significativamente la dureza, gomosidad y masticabilidad de las muestras (p<0.05). Las muestras de APE-10 podrían mejorar las propiedades nutricionales de los pasteles sin reducción significativa (P<0.05) en aceptación general, en comparación con la muestra de control. Conclusión: Los resultados de este estudio demostraron que un reemplazo parcial de la harina de trigo por pulpa de manzana y cáscara aumentó significativamente la fibra dietética especialmente la insoluble, cuando se compara con la muestra de control. La pulpa en polvo y la cáscara de manzana tienen el potencial de uso en la fabricación de pasteles como una buena fuente de fibra dietética.

In this study, extraction of phenolic compounds from apple peel and pulp was optimized using an ultrasound-assisted aqueous two-phase system (UA-ATPS) consisting of acetone-NaH2PO4 and acetone-(NH4)2SO4 with the help of Response Surface Methodology. The effectiveness of UA-ATPS was compared with certain extraction methods including traditional aqueous two-phase system (T-ATPS), ultrasound-assisted acetone extraction (UA-ACE) and traditional acetone extraction (T-ACE). The UA-ATPS gave better results than traditional methods in terms of phenolic and flavonoid contents and antioxidant activity values regardless of the fruit parts used. The status of extraction yield was observed with three major phenolics of apple including chlorogenic acid, rutin and phloridzin. Striking increases in chlorogenic acid and rutin contents in the peel were determined when acetone was replaced with ATPS in the same extraction system with equal extraction time (20 min). The present study has indicated that UA-ATPS is an effective method for phenolic extraction from apple peel and pulp.

Although polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is a potential biodegradable food packaging material, it has several critical limitations: low mechanical strength, poor ultraviolet (UV) and water vapor barrier properties, and lack of antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. Previous studies have used cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) to improve the mechanical and water vapor barrier properties of the PVA matrix. In this study, a multifunctional nanocomposite for food packaging applications was developed by incorporating titanium dioxide (TiO2) and apple peel extract (APE) into a PVA/CNC matrix. The combination of TiO2 and APE in the nanocomposites not only enhanced multifunctionality but also improved mechanical and barrier properties. The mechanical strength and water vapor barrier properties of PVA/CNC/TiO2/APE (5 wt% TiO2 and 20 wt% APE in the PVA/CNC matrix containing 5 wt% of CNCs) increased by 49.9 % and 36.6 % compared to PVA. Furthermore, PVA/CNC/TiO2/APE exhibited an excellent UV barrier (UV-protection factor of 1012.73) and high antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. In food packaging tests with fresh cherry tomatoes and potatoes, PVA/CNC/TiO2/APE effectively protected samples from external influences and prolonged their self-life, demonstrating the potential use of this nanocomposite as a biodegradable and multifunctional food packaging material.

Background and objective: Although complex atresias, such as apple-peel and multiple atresias, comprise a smaller percentage, they are usually associated with a higher incidence of postoperative complications and mortality rate. Contrary to simple atresias where the surgical technique of choice usually entails bowel resection and anastomosis with or without enteroplasty, managing apple-peel atresia remains more sophisticated. Decompressive and functionalizing stomas are sometimes mandatory to overcome problems such as increased wall thickness and the wide disparity among the anastomotic ends. Few reports discussed using tube enterostomy in the management of apple-peel atresia; nonetheless, no previous prospective studies were conducted to discuss its efficacy on a larger population. In this study, we are describing our experience using this technique on 12 patients suffering from apple-peel atresia in our center. Methods: A prospective study was conducted from June 2015 to May 2020, where all children who were found to have apple-peel atresia were included in the study. T-tube was placed through an enterotomy through the dilated proximal bowel, around 10 cm before the anastomotic line, and was kept in place using a double suture (Stamm technique) before closing the anterior face of the anastomosis. The short distal limb of the T-tube was oriented toward the anastomotic line, while the long proximal limb was directed proximally. After finishing the anastomosis, the T-tube was delivered outside the abdominal wall, anchoring the enterostomy along with the proximal dilated jejunum against the anterior abdominal wall. Results: A total of 12 cases were encountered throughout the period of study. The mean age at operation was 4 days and the mean birth weight was 2700 g. The mean time for starting oral feeding postoperatively and T-tube removal was 8 and 10.5 days, respectively. Cases were discharged after a mean of 22 days. As regards morbidity and mortality, a single case developed skin excoriations at the site of tube insertion and was managed conservatively using topical ointments and another case died from overwhelming sepsis 3 days after the operation. Conclusion: T-tube enteroplasty is a safe and feasible option in the surgical management of apple-peel atresia. The main strength of our study is its prospective nature and that it includes apple-peel atresia cases only. However, the main limitation is that a larger sample is needed.

OBJECTIVE: This study explored the feasibility of mesoplasty with end-to-side anastomosis in the treatment of different apple-peel mesenteric defects with high jejunal atresia. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed on 42 premature infants admitted to the hospital between 2014 and 2021. Prenatal ultrasound scans revealed bowel dilatation. The patients experienced vomiting after birth and produced white or no meconium. Plain radiography showed double or triple bubble signs and the patients underwent emergency laparotomy. High jejunal atresia with different apple-peel atresia appearance was discovered intraoperatively, involving mobilization of the ileocecal region. Patients received end-to-side anastomosis between the enlarged blind pouch and atretic bowel, as well as mesoplasty. A jejunal feeding tube was placed trans-nasally. Patients were discharged after achieving full enteral feeding. We also reviewed the literature on the subject. RESULTS: Three patients died and 39 survived. The discharged patients were followed up for 12 months, and none showed post-operative complications such as intestinal obstruction, malnutrition, or chronic diarrhea. All surviving patients reached the expected height and weight for children of the same age. CONCLUSION: For cases of high jejunal atresia with apple-peel intestinal atresia, mesoplasty may be a good option to avoid postoperative volvulus.

BACKGROUND: Gastroschisis is a closure defect of the abdominal wall classified as complex when it presents with necrosis, volvulus, or atresia of the gastrointestinal tract. Jejunoileal atresia is caused by abnormal closure, discontinuity, or narrowing of the intestine. Apple Peel or type IIIb is the rarest presentation, with an incidence of 1.3 per 10,000 live births. In addition to presenting a high mortality rate. PRESENTATION OF CASE: We present a preterm newborn patient of 30 weeks with a diagnosis of gastroschisis and jejunoileal atresia type IIIB. The congenital wall defect was closed in the first surgical stage, and he was then taken at four weeks to correct the atresia. In the second surgery, we found a difference in intestinal calibers of 8:1, and the surgical team decides to perform remodeling of the proximal sac with a mechanical stapler and perform anastomosis using the Santulli technique. On day 6 of life, enteral feeding began through a nutrition tube localized under intestinal anastomosis with progressive nutritional increase. Subsequently, intermittent and progressive occlusion of the stoma was performed, leading the patient to a definitive surgical closure one month later. CONCLUSIONS: The mortality rate for gastroschisis and complex intestinal atresia is high. Advances in prenatal diagnosis, neonatal intensive care, and proper surgical correction are crucial to improving survival rates. The Santulli procedure is a surgical alternative for intestinal atresias with a caliber discrepancy greater than 4 to 1 or when the characteristics of the distal part do not allow a primary anastomosis to be performed.

There is limited information on the health effects of apple peel taken from 'Fuji' (Malus pumila Mill) apples washed with ozonated water. To clarify the health-promoting effects of peel, the triterpenoids (ursolic acid and oleanolic acid) were quantified with gas chromatograph-mass spectrometry. Anti-obesity effects of apple peel extract on the 3T3-L1 pre-adipocyte cell were compared with apple flesh, whole apple, and ursolic acid. The peel extract treatment with 3.30 ± 1.05 µM of ursolic acid significantly suppressed (p < 0.05) the lipid accumulation compared with the content in flesh, and a similar level was reached in the 5 µM ursolic acid positive control group. In the peel extract and ursolic acid treatment groups, the C16:0 concentration was significantly inhibited (p < 0.05), implying the anti-obesity effect of ursolic acid on the 3T3-L1 cell. Moreover, apple peel contributed 41% of the total flavonoids content and 31% of the phenolic contents of the whole apple, but only accounted for less than 10% of the whole apple (weight basis). This study's results offer basic data on pre-washed apple as a health functional food, offering information about the health benefits of apple peel, calculated based on the partial ratio in the whole apple.

INTRODUCTION: Duodenal atresia associated with apple peel is extremely rare. Duodenal atresia occurs as a result of absence of recanalization at an early stage, whereas intestinal atresia is seemingly due to vascular causes at later stages. The presence of abnormalities associated with diaphragmatic hernia is frequent, but association with duodenal atresia has been little explored. CASE REPORT: This is the case of a female neonate born at gestational week 31, with duodenal atresia and apple peel, associated with left diaphragmatic hernia and major heart disease. An abdominal muscle flap was performed for diaphragmatic defect closure purposes, and duodenojejunal anastomosis was carried out following resection of part of the non-viable apple peel. DISCUSSION: To our knowledge, this is the first case described with this rare association. The combination of duodenal atresia and apple peel had been previously described 11 times. However, the association of both with congenital diaphragmatic hernia had not been reported yet.

La primera se produce por un defecto en la recanalización en etapas tempranas, mientras que la atresia intestinal parece deberse a causas vasculares en etapas más tardías. La presencia de anomalías asociadas a la hernia diafragmática es común, pero la asociación con la atresia duodenal apenas está descrita. CASO CLINICO: Presentamos un recién nacido de 31 semanas de gestación y sexo femenino, con atresia duodenal y apple peel, asociada a hernia diafragmática izquierda y cardiopatía mayor. Se realizó un flap muscular abdominal para el cierre del defecto diafragmático y anastomosis duodenoyeyunal tras la resección de parte del apple peel inviable. COMENTARIOS: A nuestro entender, es el primer caso descrito con esta asociación singular. La combinación de atresia duodenal con apple peel se ha descrito previamente en 11 ocasiones; la asociación de ambas con hernia diafragmática congénita no había sido descrita.

The beta-actin gene (ACTB) encodes a ubiquitous cytoskeletal protein, essential for embryonic development in humans. De novo heterozygous missense variants in the ACTB are implicated in causing Baraitser-Winter cerebrofrontofacial syndrome (BWCFFS; MIM#243310). ACTB pathogenic variants are rarely associated with intestinal malformations. We report on a rare case of monozygotic twins presenting with proximal small bowel atresia and hydrops in one, and apple-peel bowel atresia and laryngeal dysgenesis in the other. The twin with hydrops could not be resuscitated. Intensive and surgical care was provided to the surviving twin. Rapid trio genome sequencing identified a de novo missense variant in ACTB (NM_00101.3:c.1043C>T; p.(Ser348Leu)) that guided the care plan. The identical variant subsequently was identified in the demised twin. To characterize the functional effect, the variant was recreated as a pseudoheterozygote in a haploid wild-type S. cerevisiae strain. There was an obvious growth defect of the yACT1S348L/WT pseudoheterozygote compared to a yACT1WT/WT strain when grown at 22°C but not when grown at 30°C, consistent with the yACT1 S348L variant having a functional defect that is dominant over the wild-type allele. The functional results provide supporting evidence that the Ser348Leu variant is likely to be a pathogenic variant, including being associated with intestinal malformations in BWCFFS, and can demonstrate variable expressivity within monozygotic twins.

Apple is an important dietary source of carotenoids and phenolic compounds, and its regular consumption is associated with several health benefits. The aim of this study was to evaluate the phytochemical composition of fresh peels of four red-skinned ("Champion", "Generos", "Idared", "Florina") and two yellow-skinned ("Golden Delicious", "Reinette Simirenko") apple varieties. Antioxidant activity of apple peel extracts was determined by ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and ABTS radical scavenging capacity assays. Total carotenoid and polyphenolic contents were determined spectrophotometrically, while the profile of individual carotenoids and anthocyanins (in red-skinned varieties) was analyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to a photodiode array detector (HPLC-PDA). Carotenoid composition was specific for each variety, and total carotenoid content was slightly higher in yellow-skinned apple peels compared to red-skinned varieties. In contrast, total phenolic content was higher in the peels of red-skinned cultivars. Anthocyanin profile was predominated by cyanidin-3-O-galactoside. Antioxidant potential followed the trend of the total polyphenolic content, being highest in "Florina", as measured by both FRAP and ABTS assays. Our results demonstrated apple peels have high phytochemical content with diverse compositions, and their regular consumption can be an excellent source of antioxidants.

OBJECTIVE: Bowel obstructions beyond the duodenum represent a heterogeneous group of congenital anomalies with a highly variable prognosis, the main issue being postnatal short bowel syndrome (SBS). The objective of our study was to evaluate the contributions of fetal MRI in cases of bowel obstruction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of all newborns, for whom both ante-natal ultrasound and fetal MRI were available, referred to our center for suspected bowel obstruction was performed. Examinations were reviewed blinded to the postnatal outcome. Key outcome measures included exact diagnosis and the existence of postoperative SBS. We evaluated the contribution of MRI in determining precise location and etiology of the bowel obstruction, dilatation of the proximal bowel loops, and assessment of the quality of the remaining distal bowel loops. RESULTS: Twenty-five newborns were included. There were 19 single obstructions and 6 complex forms (4 apple peel syndromes and 2 multiple atresias). MRI correctly identified the affected segment of the small bowel in 59.1% of the cases. MRI identified the mechanism of obstruction in 72% of cases. MRI reliably predicted an abnormal appearance of the bowel distal to the obstruction in 100% of the severe cases (3/3) and in 66.7% of complex forms (4/6). CONCLUSION: Our study suggests that fetal MRI, when done in addition to prenatal ultrasound, is contributory in the management of fetuses with suspected bowel obstruction. MRI may be particularly useful in determining the location and origin of the bowel obstruction and in assessing the quality of the bowel distal to the obstruction, which might assist in the prediction of SBS and more detailed prenatal counseling.

Apples are seasonal fruits, and thus after harvesting apples of optimal picking maturity, it is important to prepare them properly for storage and to ensure proper storage conditions in order to minimize changes in the chemical composition and commercial quality of the apples. We studied the quantitative composition of triterpenic compounds in the whole apple, apple peel and apple flesh samples before placing them in the controlled atmosphere (CA) chambers, and at the end of the experiment, 8 months later. HPLC analysis showed that highest total amount of triterpenic compounds (1.99 ± 0.01 mg g-1) was found in the whole apple samples of the 'Spartan' cultivar stored under variant VIII (O2-20%, CO2-3%, N2-77%) conditions. Meanwhile, the highest amount of triterpenic compounds (11.66 ± 0.72 mg g-1) was determined in the apple peel samples of the 'Auksis' cultivar stored under variant II (O2-5%, CO2-1%, N2-94%) conditions. In the apple peel samples of the 'Auksis' cultivar stored under variant I (O2-21%, CO2-0.03%, N2-78.97%) conditions, the amount of individual triterpenic compounds (ursolic, oleanolic, corosolic, and betulinic acids) significantly decreased compared with amount determined before the storage. Therefore, in the apple flesh samples determined triterpenic compounds are less stable during the storage under controlled atmosphere conditions compared with triterpenic compounds determined in the whole apple and apple peel samples.
