RESUMEN

Mental health problems of various populations during the COVID-19 pandemic have received high attention, but there is little research on the mental health of Chinese civil servants. The present study investigated occupational stress, mental health problems (i.e., anxiety, depression, and insomnia), social support, and work-family conflict in Chinese civil servants during the COVID-19 pandemic. A total of 327 civil servants in Wenzhou city, China, participated in an online survey, which collected data on socio-demographic characteristics, occupational stress, mental health problems (i.e., anxiety, depression, and insomnia), social support, and work-family conflict. Data were analyzed using non-parametric tests and a multiple mediation model. Self-reported risk at work and support from mental health workers were relatively low. Anxiety, depression, and insomnia prevalence were 49.24 %, 47.1 %, and 20.48 %, respectively. Those who held higher ranks at work had lower levels of anxiety and depression. In addition, those who felt bad about their health status had more mental health problems. Social support and work-family conflict mediated the relationship between occupational stress and mental health problems significantly. Stress management training, organizational-level improvement in work arrangements, and professional mental health services are warranted for Chinese civil servants during the pandemic.

RESUMEN

Young people are increasingly using social networking site (SNS) smartphone applications (apps), necessitating research on the effects of such use on the users' emotional health. The present study recruited 360 college students across mainland China and recorded their smartphone usage for one week using an automatic tracking app. Surveys assessing social support perception and emotional health were subsequently conducted. The study examined the relationship between SNS smartphone app usage (frequency and duration) and emotional health, as well as the moderating role of perceived social support in SNS smartphone usage and emotional health. Among individuals with high social support, SNS smartphone use was more strongly associated with better emotional health. These results suggest conditional benefits of using SNS smartphone apps, depending on the user's perceived social support. The implications for designing and using SNS smartphone apps are also discussed.

RESUMEN

This study aims to examine how the process of online support obtainment may affect cognitive and behavioral coping during a public crisis. A cross-sectional online survey (N = 555) was conducted during the early stage of the COVID-19 pandemic in the U.S. Our findings revealed that informational support, obtained primarily through passive and private online involvement, led to increased risk perceptions of COVID-19; emotional support, obtained mainly via private online involvement, appeared to elicit higher perceived efficacy to cope with the crisis. People's engagement in preventive behaviors was found to be affected by efficacy perceptions, but not by risk perceptions. The results suggested that online social support functioned as a double-edged sword to affect people's coping with a public crisis.

RESUMEN

This study aims to investigate the complicated dynamical H C O 3 - / C O 2 buffering system using fractional operators which is not been investigated yet. We consider a new fractional mathematical model in the frame of fractional-order differential equations. In the proposed fractional-order model, we apply the Caputo-Fabrizio fractional operator with an exponential kernel. Then to solve the derived system of fractional equations, we suggest a quadratic numerical technique and prove its stability and convergence. Also, accurate control for the proposed system is considered. Behaviors of the approximate solutions for the considered model are provided by choosing different values of fractional orders along with integer order. Each figure manifests and compares the numerical solutions under selected orders. Figures, show how the results can be affected by changing the fractional orders.

RESUMEN

Companion animals have been identified as a unique source of social support and as contributors to mental wellbeing. This study uses the Experience Sampling Method to test whether this effect is due to stress-buffering. A total of 159 dog and cat owners responded to a series of randomly scheduled questionnaires on their smartphones. At each measurement moment, they reported in whether a pet is present at that moment and to what extent they have interacted with the pet. They also reported on stressful activities and events and on their current positive (PA) and negative (NA) affect. Multilevel regression analyses showed that when a companion animal was present (vs. absent) the negative association between stress and PA is less pronounced (event stress: B = 0.13, p = 0.002, 95% CI = 0.05; 0.21 activity stress: B = 0.08, p < 0.001, 95% CI = 0.04; 0.12). No additional main effect was revealed when tested in a subsample of records that reported low or no stress. Main effects were found for the presence of a companion animal on negative affect (B = 0.08, p < 0.001; 95% CI = 0.12; 0.05) and for interacting with a companion animal on positive affect (B = 0.06, p < 0.001; 95% CI = 0.04; 0.08). This shows that the presence of a companion animal buffers against the negative consequences of stress on positive affect, indicating stress-buffering as a mechanism behind the pet-effect. It is, however, not the only mechanism and more research is required to further elucidate how companion animals contribute to human wellbeing.

RESUMEN

Positive emotion, encompassing feelings such as joy and happiness, has been shown to predict a multitude of health outcomes. However, the role of positive emotion in pediatric asthma is not understood. No work to date has examined how positive emotion may offer benefits to children and adolescents with asthma. Based on theory and models of positive emotion and health, we hypothesize that positive emotion may improve asthma outcomes through mediators such as health behaviors and health-relevant physiological functioning. Moreover, boosting positive emotion during times of stress may be particularly relevant in mitigating asthma symptoms. In the present commentary, we elaborate on the hypothesized mechanisms behind such associations grounded within positive emotion theoretical frameworks. Additionally, we summarize the methodologically rigorous work of positive emotion interventions in other clinical settings to propose that positive emotion could be a useful tool in the management of pediatric asthma.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: This study investigates whether levels of social support moderate the association between age and stress among a sample of individuals who have a family member incarcerated. METHODS: Survey responses from individuals who are members of a nonprofit organization for individuals with a family member incarcerated in Texas were used (n = 376). Ordinary least squares regression analysis was conducted to assess the interaction between age and levels of social support on stress. RESULTS: Findings demonstrated a negative interaction between social support and age (b = -0.040, p = .027), indicating that higher levels of social support buffer against stress for older adults. DISCUSSION: The theoretical mechanisms linking social support to reductions in stress among older individuals experiencing highly stressful life events (i.e., familial incarceration), as well as the policy and practical implications for enhancing social support among older individuals with a family member incarcerated, are discussed.

RESUMEN

Background and objectives: Many studies show that mindfulness can improve quality of life and mental health as well as reduce psychological distress; however, the mechanisms of these effects remain unknown. The mindfulness stress buffering model provides a model for explaining the effects of mindfulness on health outcomes through the mechanism of reducing perceived stress. Therefore, we investigated the mediating role of perceived stress in the relationship between mindfulness and quality of life and mental health.Methods/Design: Three hundred and fifteen soldiers completed the Mindful Attention Awareness scale, Perceived Stress Scale, WHO Quality of Life Assessment, and General Health Questionnaire. Structural equation modeling using bootstrap methods was employed to analyze the data. Results: Results showed that perceived stress partially mediated the relationship between mindfulness and quality of life, and that perceived stress fully mediated the relationship between mindfulness and mental health. Conclusions: Mindfulness yields beneficial effects in improving individuals' quality of life and improving mental health through reducing perceived stress.

RESUMEN

It is widely documented that psychological distress is negatively associated with social networks involvement. However, despite the theoretical postulations that social networks are crucial for alleviating psychological distress, no study has yet empirically confirmed the causality of this relationship. Thus, we used the random-effects generalized least squares method to investigate the effect of one- and two-year lagged values for involvement in social networks on psychological distress. Nine years of longitudinal data were extracted from a nationally representative survey in Japan ("The Longitudinal Survey of Middle-aged and Older Persons"). We utilized the Kessler 6 (K6) score to measure psychological distress among 15,242 respondents aged 50-59 years in the baseline year (2005), and stratified participants into three layers of social networks: inner (well-established friendship ties and participating in hobby activates), intermediary (neighborly ties), and outer (involvement in community activities). We found highly significant and negative associations between all three layers and K6 scores, with the strongest association being for the inner layer. We further observed that one-year lagged involvement in the inner and intermediary layers led to significantly lower K6 scores. However, the protective influences of social networks generally diminished over time. In addition, the protective influences of social network involvement on psychological distress were stronger for women than for men. Furthermore, involvement in social networks was especially important for improving mental health among people with psychological distress. These findings would be important for policymaking to prevent mental health deterioration among middle-aged adults in Japan.

RESUMEN

This study examined associations of number of dependents and community support with mental health and whether the nature of these associations differs for males and females. Data were obtained from 209 elderly Nigerians using self-report measures. Hierarchical multiple regression (stepwise method) and Hayes regression-based PROCESS approach for tests of moderation were employed in analyzing the data. Results of a hierarchical multiple regression showed that number of dependents predicted mental health for the total sample and for men, but not for women. For the subgroups of men and women, there were significant predictions of mental health by community integration, community participation, and use of community organization, even after controlling for the roles of sociodemographic variables. The hypothesis on the moderation effect of community support on the associations of number of dependents and mental health was also supported. Findings highlighted the importance of addressing gender differences in the role of social capital in mental health.
