RESUMEN

A 2-dimensional (2D) egg-shape equation can be used to construct a 3D egg geometry based on the hypothesis that an egg is a solid of revolution, which helps to calculate egg volume and surface area. The parameters in the 2D egg-shape equation are potentially valuable for providing a clue to the ecology and evolution of avian eggs. In this study, the 5-parameter Preston equation (PE), the 4-parameter Troscianko equation (TE), and another 2 egg-shape equations, were compared in describing real 2D egg-shape data of 300 Gallus gallus domesticus eggs and additional 50 eggs that represented the variation in avian egg geometries. Adjusted root-mean-square error was used to quantify each equation's prediction error. Given that the 4 equations are nonlinear, relative curvature measures of nonlinearity were used to assess the extent of nonlinearity in each equation. PE was found to be the best among the 4 equations in terms of adjusted root-mean-square error and minimizing nonlinearity. The empirically determined egg volumes using a graduated cylinder were compared with the predicted egg volumes using the formula for a solid of revolution based on 2D predictions from the 4 egg-shape equations. There were negligible differences in the predicted egg volumes and surface areas among the 4 equations, indicating that these equations are all valid in calculating egg volume and surface area. In addition, we proposed a 5-parameter TE and found that it outperformed the above 4 equations in describing the 2D egg shape of G. gallus, but was less general than PE for other egg shapes. This work provides statistical evidence to show which equation is the best for describing the geometry of avian eggs and nondestructively calculating their volume and surface area, helping to classify poultry eggs into different grades according to the morphological characteristics of the eggs.

BACKGROUND: Abdominal pain is a common and often debilitating issue for children and adolescents. In many cases, it is not caused by a specific somatic condition but rather emerges from a complex interplay of bio-psycho-social factors, leading to functional abdominal pain (FAP). Given the complex nature of FAP, understanding its origins and how to effectively manage this condition is crucial. Until now, however, no questionnaire exists that targets knowledge in this specific domain. To address this, the Abdominal Pain Knowledge Questionnaire (A-PKQ) was developed. METHODS: Two versions were created (one for children and one for parents) and tested in four gastroenterology clinics and one specialized pain clinic in Germany between November 2021 and February 2024. Children between 8 and 17 years of age (N = 128) and their accompanying parents (N = 131) participated in the study. Rasch analysis was used to test the performance of both versions of the questionnaire. RESULTS: The original questionnaires exhibited good model and item fit. Subsequently, both questionnaires were refined to improve usability, resulting in final versions containing 10 items each. These final versions also demonstrated good model and item fit, with items assessing a variety of relevant domains. CONCLUSION: The A-PKQ is an important contribution to improving assessment in clinical trials focused on pediatric functional abdominal pain.

This paper presents the impact of using virtual reality (VR) in education and focuses on the main factors that affect the behavioral intention of using this new technology for the benefit of both professors and students. As part of our research methodology, we conducted a survey based on the Technology Acceptance Model and used partial least squares structural equation modelling. The results show that the intention to use VR technology in education is influenced by both usage satisfaction and the task-technology fit. The system quality of the VR technology proved to be important in influencing both the task-technology fit and perceived usefulness. The findings are useful for professors considering the adoption of new technologies that might improve the efficiency of learning for their students. Additionally, managers of educational institutions can use these insights to direct investments towards this type of innovation, which appeals to newer generations.

Tyramine (TRM) is a biogenic catecholamine neurotransmitter, which can trigger migraines and hypertension. TRM accumulated in foods is reduced and detected using additive cyclodextrins (CDs) while their association characteristics remain unclear. Here, single-crystal X-ray diffraction and density functional theory (DFT) calculation have been performed, demonstrating the elusive pseudopolymorphs in ß-CD inclusion complexes with TRM base/HCl, ß-CD·0.5TRM·7.6H2O (1) and ß-CD·TRM HCl·4H2O (2) and the rare α-CD·0.5(TRM HCl)·10H2O (3) exclusion complex. Both 1 and 2 share the common inclusion mode with similar TRM structures in the round and elliptical ß-CD cavities, belong to the monoclinic space group P21, and have similar herringbone packing structures. Furthermore, 3 differs from 2, as the smaller twofold symmetry-related, round α-CD prefers an exclusion complex with the twofold disordered TRM-H+ sites. In the orthorhombic P21212 lattice, α-CDs are packed in a channel-type structure, where the column-like cavity is occupied by disordered water sites. DFT results indicate that ß-CD remains elliptical to suitably accommodate TRM, yielding an energetically favorable inclusion complex, which is significantly contributed by the ß-CD deformation, and the inclusion complex of α-CD with the TRM aminoethyl side chain is also energetically favorable compared to the exclusion mode. This study suggests the CD implications for food safety and drug/bioactive formulation and delivery.

AIMS: Incorrectly fitting footwear (IFF) poses a risk of trauma to at-risk feet with diabetes. The aim of this systematic review was to summarise and assess the evidence that IFF is a statistically significant cause of ulceration. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and Google Scholar for English-language peer-reviewed studies reporting the number or percentage of people with diabetes-related foot ulceration (DFU) attributed to wearing IFF and included a physical examination of the footwear worn. Two independent reviewers assessed the risk of bias using the Newcastle-Ottawa scale. RESULTS: 4318 results were retrieved excluding duplicates with 45 studies shortlisted. Ten studies met the inclusion criteria with most rated as fair (n = 6) or good (n = 3). There is some evidence that DFU is significantly associated with IFF, but this is limited: only 3 of 10 included studies found a statistically significant percentage of those with DFU were wearing IFF or inappropriate footwear which included fastening, material, type or fit (15.0%-93.3%). Risk of bias in these three studies ranged from 'fair' to 'poor'. IFF definitions were often unreported or heterogeneous. Only one study reported IFF-related ulcer sites: 70% were at plantar hallux/toes and 10% at plantar metatarsal heads. CONCLUSIONS: There is some evidence that IFF is a cause of DFU, but further research is needed, which defines IFF, and methodically records footwear assessment, ulcer location and physical activity. Researchers need to uncover why IFF is worn and if this is due to economic factors, a need for footwear education or other reasons.

PURPOSE: Our study aims to assess the open-fitting capabilities and vent properties of traditional open-fitting behind-the-ear (open BTE) hearing aids to instant-fit open-fitting completely-in-the-canal (open CIC) systems. METHODS: The study analysed data from 40 patients grouped in two groups based on the used hearing aids. Free field pure tone and speech audiometry were performed to obtain the free-field pure tone average and free-field word recognition score (WRS). The matrix sentence test was employed to evaluate the auditory performance and functional outcomes of patients. The Satisfaction with Amplification in Daily Life (SADL) and the Abbreviated Profile of Hearing Aid Benefit (APHAB) questionnaire were used to assess the personal satisfaction and benefit provided by the hearing aid. Real ear measurements were conducted to objectively evaluate the Real-Ear Unaided Gain (REUG) and Real-Ear Occluded Gain (REOG) of the two groups. For this purpose, six frequency bands (band 1 from 125 to 200 Hz, band 2 from 250 to 400 Hz, band 3 from 500 to 800 Hz, band 4 from 1000 to 1600 Hz, band 5 from 2000 to 3150 Hz, and band 6 from 4000 to 6300 Hz) were defined and compared. RESULTS: Free-field WRS exhibited a significant difference (p-value = 0.004) between open BTE and open CIC, with better results for the open BTE. Matrix test speech reception threshold scores did not differ significantly between groups. No statistical significant difference were observed between APHAB and SADL total scores. Correlation tests revealed a negative correlation between SRT and APHAB scores in the open BTE group, not seen in the open CIC. No statistically significant difference was observed for all bands of REUG values, demonstrating comparability in terms of acoustic resonance of the external auditory canal. Comparing the REOG recorded in the two groups a significant difference was observed for bands 2 through 6. While the average REOG values for bands 5 and 6 were higher in patients with traditional open BTE aids, in contrast, for bands 2, 3, and 4, the REOG values for the open CIC group were higher and statistically significant compared to patients wearing traditional open-fitting BTE hearing aids. CONCLUSION: Patients with open CIC seem to perform worse in quiet environments compared to noisy ones, as indicated by the free field WRS score. However, the absence of differences in functional performance assessed with the matrix sentence test, and in the psychosocial aspects, makes these devices a good solution for individuals who reject hearing aids due to aesthetic concerns. The differences in terms of real ear measurements, while statistically significant, do not negatively impact overall performance.

The Factors Influencing Teaching Choice (FIT-Choice) scale was adapted with permission from the original creators [4]. The adapted Japanese version of the FIT-Choice scale was validated using a sample of 202 teacher education students in Japan. This scale measures 12 motivational and six perceptual constructs, as theorised in the FIT-Choice framework, using a 7-point Likert scale. This dataset enhances our understanding of the motivations and perceptions related to pursuing a teaching career among teacher education students in Japan. The entire raw dataset was included in a CSV file. Readers are referred to the original creators' publications [2] according to an agreement restricting the disclosure of all scale items in subsequent publications by the author.

BACKGROUND: Frailty and sarcopenia are geriatric syndromes of increasing concern and are associated with adverse health outcomes. They are more prevalent among long-term care facility (LTCF) users than among community dwellers. Exercise, especially multicomponent and progressive resistance training, is essential for managing these conditions. However, LTCFs, particularly in rural areas, face challenges in implementing structured exercise programs due to health care professional shortages. Moreover, older adults often become bored with repetitive exercise training and may lose interest over time. The Nintendo Switch Ring Fit Adventure (RFA) exergame is a novel exergame that combines resistance, aerobic, and balance exercises and offers a potential solution by boosting motivation in an immersive manner and reducing staff intervention needs. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to evaluate the clinical effectiveness of an exergame-based exercise training program delivered via RFA (exergame-RFA) in improving muscle mass and functional performance among older adult LTCF users. METHODS: This was a randomized controlled trial conducted from August 2022 to September 2023 and involved older adult LTCF users (aged ≥60 y) in rural southern Taiwan. Participants were randomized into an intervention group (exergame-RFA plus standard care) or a control group (standard care alone). The intervention, conducted seated with arm fit skills and trunk control exercises using the RFA, lasted 30 minutes twice weekly over 12 weeks. The primary outcomes measured were the Study of Osteoporotic Fractures index (serving as an indicator of frailty status) and the diagnostic criteria for sarcopenia (appendicular skeletal muscle mass index, handgrip strength, and gait speed). The secondary outcomes included functional performance (box and block test as well as maximum voluntary isometric contraction of the dominant upper extremity), muscle condition (muscle thickness measured using ultrasonography), activities of daily living (Kihon checklist), health-related quality of life (Short Form Health Survey-36), and cognitive function (brain health test). We used an intention-to-treat analysis, incorporating a simple imputation technique in statistical analysis. A mixed ANOVA, with time as a within-participant factor and intervention as a between-participant factor, was used to compare the training effects on outcomes. RESULTS: We recruited 96 individuals, of whom 60 (62%) underwent randomization. Of these 60 participants, 55 (92%) completed the study. Significant group×time interactions were observed in the intervention group in all primary outcomes (all P<.001, except P=.01 for handgrip strength) and most secondary outcomes, including maximum voluntary isometric contraction of the biceps (P=.004) and triceps brachii (P<.001) muscles, biceps muscle thickness measured using ultrasonography (P<.001), box and block test (P<.001), Kihon checklist (physical function: P=.01, mood status: P=.003, and total: P=.003), and brain health test (P<.001). CONCLUSIONS: The exergame-RFA intervention significantly improved muscle mass, strength, and functional performance among older adult users of rural LTCFs, offering a novel approach to addressing frailty and sarcopenia. RESUMEN

An intranet is a beneficial tool, most commonly utilised and researched in corporate settings, but can also be found within healthcare. An organisational intranet has many of the same functions as the internet while also having a security firewall associated with it, meaning that only those with security access to the site are able to gain access. An evaluation study, using a two-phase process, of a Nursing Intranet within a healthcare organisation in one urban hospital in New Zealand is presented. First a content audit was undertaken, before using a selected framework to evaluate the content, design and functionality of the Nursing Intranet. The results from this evaluation identified some strengths, but also areas to improve. Further research, including the development of tools to evaluate intranets in a healthcare setting are needed to ensure information is more readily accessible to health professional staff.

Fit indices are descriptive measures that can help evaluate how well a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) model fits a researcher's data. In multigroup models, before between-group comparisons are made, fit indices may be used to evaluate measurement invariance by assessing the degree to which multiple groups' data are consistent with increasingly constrained nested models. One such fit index is an adaptation of the root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA) called RMSEAD. This index embeds the chi-square and degree-of-freedom differences into a modified RMSEA formula. The present study comprehensively compared RMSEAD to ΔRMSEA, the difference between two RMSEA values associated with a comparison of nested models. The comparison consisted of both derivations as well as a population analysis using one-factor CFA models with features common to those found in practical research. The findings demonstrated that for the same model, RMSEAD will always have increased sensitivity relative to ΔRMSEA with an increasing number of indicator variables. The study also indicated that RMSEAD had increased ability to detect noninvariance relative to ΔRMSEA in one-factor models. For these reasons, when evaluating measurement invariance, RMSEAD is recommended instead of ΔRMSEA.

Descriptive fit indices that do not require a formal statistical basis and do not specifically depend on a given estimation criterion are useful as auxiliary devices for judging the appropriateness of unrestricted or exploratory factor analytical (UFA) solutions, when the problem is to decide the most appropriate number of common factors. While overall indices of this type are well known in UFA applications, especially those intended for item analysis, difference indices are much more scarce. Recently, Raykov and collaborators proposed a family of effect-size-type descriptive difference indices that are promising for UFA applications. As a starting point, we considered the simplest measure of this family, which (a) can be viewed as absolute and (b) from which only tentative cutoffs and reference values have been provided so far. In this situation, this article has three aims. The first is to propose a relative version of Raykov's effect-size measure, intended to be used as a complement of the original measure, in which the increase in explained common variance is related to the overall prior estimated amount of common factor variance. The second is to establish reference values for both indices in item-analysis scenarios using simulation. And the third aim (instrumental) is to implement the proposal in both R language and a well-known non-commercial factor analysis program. The functioning and usefulness of the proposal is illustrated using an existing empirical dataset.

BACKGROUND: The tear ferning test can be an easy clinical procedure for the evaluation and characterization of the ocular tear film. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to examine the restoration of tear ferning patterns and reduction of glycosylation peak after amlodipine application in carrageenan-induced conjunctivitis. METHODS: At the rabbit's upper palpebral region, carrageenan was injected for cytokine-mediated conjunctivitis. Ferning pattern and glycosylation of the tear fluid were characterized using various instrumental analyses. The effect of amlodipine was also examined after ocular instillation and flexible docking studies. RESULTS: Optical microscopy showed a disrupted ferning of the tear collected from the inflamed eye. FTIR of the induced tear fluid exhibited peaks within 1000-1200 cm-1, which might be due to the protein glycosylation absent in the normal tear spectrogram. The glycosylation peak reduced significantly in the tear sample collected from the amlodipine-treated group. Corresponding energy dispersive analysis showed the presence of sulphur, indicating protein leakage from the lacrimal gland in the induced group. The disappearance of sulphur from the treated group indicated its remedial effect. The flexible docking studies revealed a stronger binding mode of amlodipine with Interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß). The reduction in the intensity of the glycosylated peak and the restoration offering are probably due to suppression of IL-1ß. CONCLUSION: This study may be helpful in obtaining primary information for drug discovery to be effective against IL-1ß and proving tear fluid as a novel diagnostic biomarker.

According to self-determination theory (SDT), relationships that support the needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness are essential to youth development. It is yet unknown whether adolescents differ in what constitutes "optimal" supplies of support. This research proposes methodological extensions to analyze how the degree of fit or misfit between needs versus supplies in support (i.e., from teachers, parents, and peers) relates to engagement in class, academic achievement, and well-being. Data were collected on 389 adolescents (M(age) = 14.3, SD(age) = 2.1, 58% female, low to high SES). Extending SDT's contention that "the more supplies the better", results suggest that the impact of supplies actually depends on the level of needs, and that commensurate (for parents) or surplus supplies (for teachers, peers) are most optimal. Therefore, while some youth require strongly supportive relationships to experience optimal development, others require much lower support, and may even suffer from higher support.

MAIN CONCLUSION: NH4+ is necessary for full functionality of reduction-based Fe deficiency response in plants. Nitrogen (N) is present in soil mainly as nitrate (NO3-) or ammonium (NH4+). Although the significance of a balanced supply of NO3- and NH4+ for optimal growth has been generally accepted, its importance for iron (Fe) acquisition has not been sufficiently investigated. In this work, hydroponically grown cucumber (Cucumis sativus L. cv. Maximus) plants were supplied with NO3- as the sole N source under -Fe conditions. Upon the appearance of chlorosis, plants were supplemented with 2 mM NH4Cl by roots or leaves. The NH4+ treatment increased leaf SPAD and the HCl-extractable Fe concentration while decreased root apoplastic Fe. A concomitant increase in the root concentration of nitric oxide and activity of FRO and its abolishment by an ethylene action inhibitor, indicated activation of the components of Strategy I in NH4+-treated plants. Ammonium-pretreated plants showed higher utilization capacity of sparingly soluble Fe(OH)3 and higher root release of H+, phenolics, and organic acids. The expression of the master regulator of Fe deficiency response (FIT) and its downstream genes (AHA1, FRO2, and IRT1) along with EIN3 and STOP1 was increased by NH4+ application. Temporal analyses and the employment of a split-root system enabled us to suggest that a permanent presence of NH4+ at concentrations lower than 2 mM is adequate to produce an unknown signal and causes a sustained upregulation of Fe deficiency-related genes, thus augmenting the Fe-acquisition machinery. The results indicate that NH4+ appears to be a widespread and previously underappreciated component of plant reduction-based Fe deficiency response.

Background: Exercise offers substantial health benefits but can induce oxidative stress and inflammation, especially in high-intensity formats such as high-intensity interval exercise (HIIE). Exergaming has become an effective, enjoyable fitness tool for all ages, particularly older adults. Enzyme supplements may enhance exercise performance by improving lactate metabolism and reducing oxidative stress. Objective: This study investigates the efficacy of fruit and vegetable enzyme supplementation in modulating fatigue and enhancing aerobic capacity in older adults following HIIE through exergaming. Methods: The study recruited 16 older adult female participants and allocated them into 2 distinct groups (enzyme and placebo) based on their pretest lactate levels. This division used pairwise grouping to guarantee comparability between the groups, ensuring the integrity of the results. They engaged in HIIE using Nintendo Switch Ring Fit Adventure, performing 8 sets of 20 seconds of maximum effort exercise interspersed with 30 seconds of rest, totaling 370 seconds of exercise. Key metrics assessed included blood lactate levels, heart rate, rating of perceived exertion, and training impulse. Participants in the enzyme group were administered a fruit and vegetable enzyme supplement at a dosage of 30 mL twice daily over a period of 14 days. Results: The enzyme group showed significantly lower blood lactate levels compared to the placebo group, notably after the fourth (mean 4.29, SD 0.67 vs mean 6.34, SD 1.17 mmol/L; P=.001) and eighth (mean 5.84, SD 0.63 vs mean 8.20, SD 1.15 mmol/L; P<.001) exercise sessions. This trend continued at 5 minutes (mean 6.85, SD 0.82 vs mean 8.60, SD 1.13 mmol/L; P=.003) and 10 minutes (mean 5.91, SD 1.16 vs mean 8.21, SD 1.27 mmol/L; P=.002) after exercise. Although both groups exceeded 85% of their estimated maximum heart rate during the exercise, enzyme supplementation did not markedly affect the perceived intensity or effort. Conclusions: The study indicates that fruit and vegetable enzyme supplementation can significantly reduce blood lactate levels in older adults following HIIE through exergaming. This suggests a potential role for these enzymes in modulating lactate production or clearance during and after high-intensity exercise. These findings have implications for developing targeted interventions to enhance exercise tolerance and recovery in older adults.

BACKGROUND: Use of the faecal immunochemical test (FIT) to triage patients with iron deficiency (ID) for colonoscopy due to suspected colorectal cancer (CRC) may improve distribution of colonoscopic resources. We reviewed the diagnostic performance of FIT for detecting advanced colorectal neoplasia, including CRC and advanced pre-cancerous neoplasia (APCN), in patients with ID, with or without anaemia. METHODS: We performed a systematic review of three databases for studies comprising of patients with ID, with or without anaemia, completing a quantitative FIT within six months prior to colonoscopy, where test performance was compared against the reference standard colonoscopy. Random effects meta-analyses determined the diagnostic performance of FIT for advanced colorectal neoplasia. RESULTS: Nine studies were included on a total of n=1761 patients with ID, reporting FIT positivity thresholds between 4-150 µg haemoglobin/g faeces. Only one study included a non-anaemic ID (NAID) cohort. FIT detected CRC and APCN in ID patients with 90.7 % and 49.3 % sensitivity, and 81.0 % and 82.4 % specificity, respectively. FIT was 88.0 % sensitive and 83.4 % specific for CRC in patients with ID anaemia at a FIT positivity threshold of 10 µg haemoglobin/g faeces. CONCLUSIONS: FIT shows high sensitivity for advanced colorectal neoplasia and may be used to triage those with ID anaemia where colonoscopic resources are limited, enabling those at higher risk of CRC to be prioritised for colonoscopy. There is a need for further research investigating the diagnostic performance of FIT in NAID patients.

RESUMEN

A series of 21 new 7'H-spiro[azetidine-3,5'-furo [3,4-d]pyrimidine]s substituted at the pyrimidine ring second position were synthesized. The compounds showed high antibacterial in vitro activity against M. tuberculosis. Two compounds had lower minimum inhibitory concentrations against Mtb (H37Rv strain) compared with isoniazid. The novel spirocyclic scaffold shows excellent properties for anti-tuberculosis drug development.

Binding affinity is a fundamental parameter in drug design, describing the strength of the interaction between a molecule and its target protein. Accurately predicting binding affinity is crucial for the rapid development of novel therapeutics, the prioritization of promising candidates, and the optimization of their properties through rational design strategies. Binding affinity is determined by the mechanism of recognition between proteins and ligands. Various models, including the lock and key, induced fit, and conformational selection, have been proposed to explain this recognition process. However, current computational strategies to predict binding affinity, which are based on these models, have yet to produce satisfactory results. This article explores the connection between binding affinity and these protein-ligand interaction models, highlighting that they offer an incomplete picture of the mechanism governing binding affinity. Specifically, current models primarily center on the binding of the ligand and do not address its dissociation. In this context, the concept of ligand trapping is introduced, which models the mechanisms of dissociation. When combined with the current models, this concept can provide a unified theoretical framework that may allow for the accurate determination of the ligands' binding affinity.

Objectives. Addressing the prevalent issue of size misfits in large-scale issued firefighter uniforms due to diverse and complex body morphologies, this article presents an objective method for intelligent garment sizing matching without subjective weighting. Methods. The method employs criteria importance through inter-criteria correlation (CRITIC) and the catastrophe progression method (CPM) for more accurate and reliable sizing. Traditional methods, reliant on limited indicators such as height and chest girth and often subjectively determined by experts, are prone to reliability concerns. Matching decisions made based on our approach are evidence-based, transparent and reproducible, thus minimizing subjectivity and expert intervention. Results. A case study of 388 cases validates the method's efficacy in providing garment size recommendations, surpassing traditional experience-based approaches by reducing subjective bias. Conclusion. Despite some differences, the optimal alternatives for examinees are almost consistent across the different methods. Compared with traditional subjective weighting methods, this method has potential advantages in situations such as large-scale matching of firefighter protective clothing where individual customization or direct try-on is not feasible.
