In this review, we explore the effects of food additives on intestinal health. Food additives, such as preservatives, antioxidants and colorants, are widely used to improve food quality and extend shelf life. However, their effects on intestinal microecology May pose health risks. Starting from the basic functions of food additives and the importance of intestinal microecology, we analyze in detail how additives affect the diversity of intestinal flora, oxidative stress and immune responses. Additionally, we examine the association between food additives and intestinal disorders, including inflammatory bowel disease and irritable bowel syndrome, and how the timing, dosage, and individual differences affect the body's response to additives. We also assess the safety and regulatory policies of food additives and explore the potential of natural additives. Finally, we propose future research directions, emphasizing the refinement of risk assessment methods and the creation of safer, innovative additives.

Although observational clinical studies have established an association between Intestinal Diseases (IDS) and Anal Diseases (ADS), the causal relationship is still not fully understood due to the limitations of observational studies. Genome-wide association study (GWAS) statistical data for IDS and ADS were obtained from publicly available databases. To assess the causal effects of IDS on ADS, we conducted Mendelian randomization analysis. The inverse variance weighted method indicated that Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) had a significant causal relationship with three kinds of ADS: Anorectal abscess (ARB), Haemorrhoidal disease (HEM), and Fissure and fistula of anal and rectal regions (FISSANAL). Crohn's disease (CD) and Ulcerative colitis (UC) also showed significant causal effects with three ADS: ARB, HEM, and FISSANAL. Furthermore, a potential link between CD and BNA(Benign neoplasm of anus and anal canal), Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and HEM, Colorectal cancer (CRC) and BNA, and Celiac disease and MNA (Malignant neoplasm of anus and anal canal) was observed. This comprehensive MR analysis highlight the significant and increased risk of common Anal Diseases (ARB, FISSANAL, and HEM) in patients with IBD, CD, and UC. Additionally, potential positive causal associations emerged between IBS and HEM, CRC and BNA, as well as between celiac disease and MNA.

INTRODUCTION: Intestinal parasitoses are very common in school and in Mauritania few external studies address the issue. Several risk factors are known for intestinal parasitosis, including fecal danger, promiscuity and contaminated food Objective: To describe the epidemiology of intestinal parasitosis in school-age children in the Moughatâa (department) of Riyadh in Nouakchott (Mauritania) and the associated risk factors. METHODS: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study lasting three months, at the level of a random sample of pupils enrolled in five primary schools in the Moughatâa of Riyadh, as well as the foods sold in front of the establishments included. The data was collected through an anamnestic and clinical observation grid, as well as stool and food samples exposed in front of the schools included. The parasitological examination of the stools was carried out at the National Institute of Public Health Research (INRSP) in Nouakchott, by the methods of modified Ritchie and Kato-Katz. For food, a microbiological analysis looking for fecal colibacilli is carried out. RESULTS: The study population was composed of 337 students with a sex ratio of 0.76. The prevalence of parasitosis in the study population was 46% (95% CI [40.75%-51.33%]): Boys (48.6%), 95% CI [40.66%-56.67%]); Girls (43.9%), 95% CI [37.13%-51.07%]. The spectrum of these parasitic intestinal diseases was dominated by protozoa (51.6%) and helminthiasis represented 10.4% and characterized by mono parasitism (31.8%). The food sold in front of the schools studied was contaminated with coli bacteria, in 54.5% of cases. CONCLUSION: The high prevalence of intestinal parasitosis in the primary schools studied and the contamination of food sold to students, require the strengthening of the strategy to fight against diseases of fecal peril and school and public hygiene, in the Moughatâa of Riyadh (Nouakchott).

BACKGROUND: Techniques for diagnosing intestinal parasites need technological advancements in the preanalytical (collection/processing) and analytical (detection) stages. The dissolved air flotation (DAF) technique effectively recovers parasites from processed feces for routine diagnosis. Artificial intelligence (AI) is a practical and affordable alternative to modernize the analysis stage of microscopy images and generates high efficiency in the parasitological examination of feces. METHODS: The objective of this study was to standardize a laboratory protocol for stool processing using the DAF technique in conjunction with an automated diagnosis of intestinal parasites (DAPI) system. A total of 400 samples were obtained to perform the tests with the use of DAF to verify the recovery of the parasites as a function of the chemical reagent (polymer and surfactant), the volume of the flotation tube, and standardization of smear assembly on a microscopy slide, with automated analysis by DAPI. The DAF protocol that obtained the most satisfactory results in terms of parasite recovery (P < 0.05) and slide positivity was compared with the Three Fecal Test (TF-Test) protocol with manual (microscopists) and automated (DAPI) evaluation. We compared the sensitivity with the modified TF-Test technical protocol and the diagnostic agreement with the gold standard (Kappa) result. RESULTS: There was no significant difference in the parasite recovery between the 10 ml and 50 ml tubes (P > 0.05). The surfactants showed a range of parasite recoveries between 41.9% and 91.2% in the float supernatant. We obtained a maximum positivity of 73% of the assembled slides when we applied DAF processing with 7% CTAB surfactant and 57% positivity with the modified TF-Test technique. Regarding diagnostic performance, the TF-Test-modified and DAF techniques used in fecal processing for subsequent computerized analysis by AI presented sensitivities of 86% and 94%, with kappa agreements of 0.62 and 0.80 (substantial), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The DAF protocol defined in this study and the DAPI system are innovative processes for parasite recovery and fecal debris elimination that are favorable for effectively detecting pathogenic structures in laboratory diagnosis.

Introduction: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was a pandemic that began in 2019 and continues to have morbid and deadly consequences throughout the world. During the beginning of the pandemic, many considered older adults and immunocompromised younger adults to be the only populations at risk for the severe consequences of COVID-19. Throughout the pandemic, this was proven wrong with several case reports and studies showing that relatively younger adults can also suffer serious consequences from this perplexing virus. Case Presentation: We report a rare case of ischemic colitis in a 42-year-old obese man who presented to the emergency department with quintessential COVID-19 symptoms. During his hospital course, he developed not only respiratory failure but also ischemic colitis, although he had no past medical history of any coagulopathy and was never on any pressors. Conclusion: As more case reports are being published, it has become evident that COVID-19 has the ability to cause serious extrapulmonary consequences due to an imposed state of hypercoagulability, and younger adults are at risk of facing these consequences, especially if they are obese. Thus, it is imperative that younger adults seek out the COVID-19 vaccine when available to them not only to protect those most vulnerable around them but also to protect themselves from these complications.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Intestinal Behçet disease is typically associated with ileocecal punched-out ulcers and significant morbidity and mortality. Intestinal ultrasound is a noninvasive imaging technique for disease monitoring. However, no previous reports have compared intestinal ultrasound with endoscopic ulcer activity or histopathological findings for intestinal Behçet disease. We evaluated the usefulness of intestinal ultrasound for assessing the activity of ileocecal ulcers in intestinal Behçet disease. METHODS: We retrospectively compared intestinal ultrasound findings with 73 corresponding endoscopic images and 6 resected specimens. The intestinal ultrasound findings were assessed for 7 parameters (bowel wall thickness, vascularity [evaluated using the modified Limberg score with color Doppler], bowel wall stratification, white-plaque sign [strong hyperechogenic lines or spots], mesenteric lymphadenopathy, extramural phlegmons, and fistulas), and endoscopic ulcer activity was classified into active, healing, and scar stages. Histopathological findings were evaluated by consensus among experienced pathologists. RESULTS: Bowel wall thickness (P< 0.001), vascularity (P< 0.001), loss of bowel wall stratification (P= 0.015), and white-plague sign (P= 0.013) were significantly exacerbated in the endoscopic active ulcer stage. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis revealed that a bowel wall thickness of > 5.5 mm (sensitivity 89.7%, specificity 85.3%) was potentially useful for detecting active lesions. When compared with histopathological findings, an increase in bowel wall thickness reflected the ulcer marginal ridge, and the white-plaque sign reflected the ulcer bottom. CONCLUSIONS: Intestinal ultrasound is useful for monitoring intestinal ulcer activity in intestinal Behçet disease.

Maintaining homeostasis within the intestinal microbiota is imperative for assessing the health status of hosts, and dysbiosis within the intestinal microbiota is closely associated with canine intestinal diseases. In recent decades, the modulation of canine intestinal health through probiotics and prebiotics has emerged as a prominent area of investigation. Evidence indicates that probiotics and prebiotics play pivotal roles in regulating intestinal health by modulating the intestinal microbiota, fortifying the epithelial barrier, and enhancing intestinal immunity. This review consolidates literature on using probiotics and prebiotics for regulating microbiota homeostasis in canines, thereby furnishing references for prospective studies and formulating evaluation criteria.

Introduction: Acute appendicitis secondary to parasitic infections is uncommon, being detected in less than 1% of cases. Balantidium coli is a parasite found in pigs and primates with zoonotic potential. To date, only three cases of acute appendicitis induced by this parasite have been documented globally. Case: A 7-year-old female patient, who consumed pork daily, presented to the emergency department with a one-day history of abdominal pain in the lower quadrants, described as colic-like, alongside abdominal distension. Initial abdominal radiography led to a diagnosis of intestinal obstruction. Conservative management without therapeutic response necessitated referral to a higher complexity center. Upon admission, an abdominal computed tomography scan diagnosed acute appendicitis and secondary ileus. During surgical intervention, an appendiceal phlegmon formed by loops of the small intestine was mechanically released, revealing a perforated appendix with extensive fecal peritoneal contamination. Pathological analysis identified an inflammatory infiltrate and the presence of Balantidium coli trophozoites. Medical treatment included Piperacillin-Tazobactam and Metronidazole. The patient was discharged after 10 days of medical treatment. Discussion: Acute appendicitis caused by Balantidium coli is a rare occurrence. It is crucial to identify parasites in pathological samples due to their impact on postoperative management. The close contact between humans and pigs, especially in developing countries, suggests that the prevalence of parasitic infection and colonization by Balantidium coli may be higher than currently recognized. Regarding the identification of this patient's specific exposure, the regular consumption of pork suggests the hypothesis that improper processing is linked to the acquisition of the parasitic infection.

Gut microbiota is a complex microbial community with the ability of maintaining intestinal health. Intestinal homeostasis largely depends on the mucosal immune system to defense external pathogens and promote tissue repair. In recent years, growing evidence revealed the importance of gut microbiota in shaping intestinal mucosal immunity. Therefore, according to the existing findings, this review first provided an overview of intestinal mucosal immune system before summarizing the regulatory roles of gut microbiota in intestinal innate and adaptive immunity. Specifically, this review delved into the gut microbial interactions with the cells such as intestinal epithelial cells (IECs), macrophages, dendritic cells (DCs), neutrophils, and innate lymphoid cells (ILCs) in innate immunity, and T and B lymphocytes in adaptive immunity. Furthermore, this review discussed the main effects of gut microbiota dysbiosis in intestinal diseases and offered future research prospects. The review highlighted the key regulatory roles of gut microbiota in intestinal mucosal immunity via various host-microbe interactions, providing valuable references for the development of microbial therapy in intestinal diseases.

Introducción. El intestino primitivo rota durante la vida embrionaria. Cuando ocurre de forma inadecuada aparece la malrotación intestinal que puede llevar a la obstrucción o al vólvulo del intestino medio. La incidencia disminuye con el aumento de la edad. La malrotación intestinal es una de las principales causas de complicaciones del tracto gastrointestinal en la edad pediátrica. Métodos. Estudio retrospectivo, observacional, transversal y analítico, de la experiencia durante 10 años en pacientes menores de 15 años con diagnóstico de malrotación intestinal, tratados en el Hospital Infantil de San Vicente Fundación, en Medellín, Colombia. Se buscó la asociación entre variables demográficas, clínicas e imagenológicas con los desenlaces. Resultados. Se obtuvieron 58 pacientes con malrotación intestinal, 65 % menores de 1 año. En 29,3 % de los pacientes se hizo el diagnóstico con la presentación clínica; los síntomas predominantes fueron distensión abdominal y emesis. En el 24,1 % se confirmó el diagnóstico con imágenes. Las variables con una diferencia estadísticamente significativa a favor de encontrar una malrotación complicada fueron choque séptico (OR=11,7), síndrome de respuesta inflamatoria sistémica (OR=8,4) y deshidratación (OR=5,18). Conclusiones. La malrotación intestinal tiene complicaciones como perforación, peritonitis, vólvulo e intestino corto. El vólvulo se acompaña de shock y sepsis, con mortalidad hasta del 50 %. Las imágenes diagnósticas son una ayuda, pero no se puede basar la conducta médica en estas porque ninguna imagen garantiza el diagnóstico definitivo. Los signos de alarma son poco específicos. En menores de un año con emesis, distensión y dolor abdominal se debe sospechar malrotación intestinal.
Introduction. The primitive intestine rotates during embryonic life. When it occurs inappropriately, intestinal malrotation appears, which can lead to obstruction or midgut volvulus. The incidence decreases when age increases. Intestinal malrotation is one of the main causes of complications of the gastrointestinal tract in pediatric age. Method. Retrospective, observational, cross-sectional and analytical study of the experience over 10 years in patients under 15 years of age with a diagnosis of intestinal malrotation, treated at Hospital Infantil of San Vicente Fundación, in Medellín, Colombia. The association between demographic, clinical and imaging variables with the outcomes was sought. Results. There were 58 patients with intestinal malrotation, 65% under one year of age. In 29.3% of patients, intestinal malrotation was diagnosed clinically. The predominant symptoms were abdominal distension and emesis. In 24.1% the diagnosis was confirmed with imaging. The variables with a statistically significant difference in favor of finding a complicated malrotation were septic shock (OR=11.7), systemic inflammatory response syndrome (OR-8.4), and dehydration (OR=5.18). Conclusions. Malrotation has complications such as perforation, peritonitis, volvulus, and short bowel. Volvulus is accompanied by shock and sepsis, with mortality of up to 50%. Diagnostic images are helpful, but medical conduct cannot be based on them because no image guarantees a definitive diagnosis. The warning signs are not very specific. In children under one year of age with emesis, distension and abdominal pain, intestinal malrotation should be suspected.

Anthocyanins are phytonutrients with physiological activity belonging to the flavonoid family whose transport and absorption in the human body follow specific pathways. In the upper gastrointestinal tract, anthocyanins are rarely absorbed intact by active transporters, with most reaching the colon, where bacteria convert them into metabolites. There is mounting evidence that anthocyanins can be used for prevention and treatment of intestinal diseases, including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and colorectal cancer (CRC), through the protective function on the intestinal epithelial barrier, immunomodulation, antioxidants, and gut microbiota metabolism. Dietary anthocyanins are summarized in this comprehensive review with respect to their classification and structure as well as their absorption and transport mechanisms within the gastrointestinal tract. Additionally, the review delves into the role and mechanism of anthocyanins in treating common intestinal diseases. These insights will deepen our understanding of the potential benefits of natural anthocyanins for intestinal disorders.

Recent studies have indicated that gut microbiota-mediated oxidative stress is significantly associated with intestinal diseases such as colorectal cancer, ulcerative colitis, and Crohn's disease. The level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) has been reported to increase when the gut microbiota is dysregulated, especially when several gut bacterial metabolites are present. Although healthy gut microbiota plays a vital role in defending against excessive oxidative stress, intestinal disease is significantly influenced by excessive ROS, and this process is controlled by gut microbiota-mediated immunological responses, DNA damage, and intestinal inflammation. In this review, we discuss the relationship between gut microbiota and intestinal disease from an oxidative stress perspective. In addition, we also provide a summary of the most recent therapeutic approaches for preventing or treating intestinal diseases by modifying gut microbiota.

OBJECTIVES: To describe the clinical features, history and association with intestinal disease in central nervous system (CNS) S. bovis infections. METHODS: Four cases of S. bovis CNS infections from our institution are presented. Additionally a systematic literature review of articles published between 1975 and 2021 in PubMed/MEDLINE was conducted. RESULTS: 52 studies with 65 cases were found; five were excluded because of incomplete data. In total 64 cases were analyzed including our four cases: 55 with meningitis and 9 with intracranial focal infections. Both infections were frequently associated with underlying conditions (70.3%) such as immunosuppression (32.8%) or cancer (10.9%). In 23 cases a biotype was identified, with biotype II being the most frequent (69.6%) and S. pasteurianus the most common within this subgroup. Intestinal diseases were found in 60.9% of cases, most commonly neoplasms (41.0%) and Strongyloides infestation (30.8%). Overall mortality was 17.1%, with a higher rate in focal infection (44.4% vs 12.7%; p=0.001). CONCLUSIONS: CNS infections due to S. bovis are infrequent and the most common clinical form is meningitis. Compared with focal infections, meningitis had a more acute course, was less associated with endocarditis and had a lower mortality. Immunosuppression and intestinal disease were frequent in both infections.

ABSTRACT Objective: To describe the first known case of human Bertiellosis in Paraná (Brazil). Case description: A 6-year-old male residing in the Brazilian state of Paraná was suffering from intermittent nonspecific abdominal pain and abdominal distension, associated with expulsion of live tapeworms in his feces for 7 months. He had a history of interaction with monkeys on an island. His first feces analysis was inconclusive, with an initial hypothesis of an atypical Taenia. However, after additional research, the parasitologist identified pregnant proglottids of Bertiella sp. The patient was initially treated with an unknown dosage of albendazole and nitazoxanide, as it was believed he had been infected with Taenia sp. Since the symptoms persisted, praziquantel 10 mg/kg was prescribed without further proglottids elimination. Comments: Human Bertiellosis is a rare zoonosis, with less than one hundred cases reported. However, it is a cause of chronic abdominal pain and should be kept as a differential diagnosis, especially in cases reporting recurrent tapeworm expulsion in feces and refractory treatment with albendazole.
RESUMO Objetivo: Descrever o primeiro caso conhecido de bertielose humana no Paraná, Brasil. Descrição do caso: Criança de seis anos do sexo masculino, residente no Paraná, Brasil, apresentava dor abdominal inespecífica intermitente e distensão abdominal, associadas à expulsão de helmintos vivos em suas fezes havia sete meses. Tinha um histórico de interação com macacos em uma ilha. Sua primeira análise de fezes foi inconclusiva, com hipótese inicial de uma Taenia atípica. No entanto, após pesquisas adicionais, o parasitologista identificou proglótides gravídicas de Bertiella sp. O paciente foi inicialmente tratado com uma dosagem desconhecida de albendazol e nitazoxanida, pois se acreditava que havia sido infectado por Taenia sp. Diante da persistência dos sintomas, foi prescrito praziquantel 10 mg/kg, sem mais eliminação de proglótides. Comentários: A bertielose humana é uma zoonose rara, com menos de cem casos relatados. No entanto, é uma causa de dor abdominal crônica e deve ser mantida como diagnóstico diferencial, principalmente nos casos que relatam expulsão recorrente de helmintos nas fezes e que são refratários ao tratamento com albendazol.

ABSTRACT Background: A staggering 99% of infant undernutrition mortality comes from Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. Despite multiple interventions focusing on nutrition adequacy, 2.7 million children worldwide remain associated with undernutrition-related mortality. The lack of impact from multiple interventions toward undernutrition reflects a strong reason to believe that EED is the missing link that sustains undernutrition in low-to-middle-income countries (LMICs). EED is a sub-clinical condition caused by repeated oral enteropathogenic and non-pathogenic fecal microbes exposure that causes intestinal villous malformation, multi-omics changes, chronic intestinal and systemic inflammation, and gut dysbiosis. EED impacts the absorptive capacity and the integrity of the gut, causing a cycle of undernutrition in children. There is currently no protocol for the diagnosis and treatment of EED, hence EED is widely believed to be highly prevalent and underdiagnosed in LMICs. Objective: To our knowledge, this is the first systematic review to study the impact of nutritional interventions on EED. Previous studies yielded inconsistent results, hence the synthesis of this information is essential in attaining a deeper understanding of EED to formulate new targets of intervention against child undernutrition. Methods: This systematic review is registered to PROSPERO (CRD42022363157) in accordance to PRISMA, using keywords referring to nutrient supplementation, EED, and child growth failure. Results: Eleven articles were eligible for review, comprising randomized controlled trials performed mainly in the African continent, with a total of 5689 healthy children eligible for analysis. Conclusion: The systematic review illustrates that nutritional interventions have a minimal impact on EED biomarkers and linear growth and reflects the importance of understanding better the mechanisms causing EED and its consequences. It appears that the anabolic contribution of nutrition intervention to child growth is negated by EED.
RESUMO Contexto: Um número impressionante de 99% da mortalidade por desnutrição infantil provém da África Subsaariana e do Sul da Ásia. Apesar de múltiplas intervenções focadas na adequação nutricional, 2,7 milhões de crianças em todo o mundo permanecem associadas à mortalidade relacionada à desnutrição. A falta de impacto de múltiplas intervenções em direção à desnutrição reflete uma forte razão para acreditar que a disfunção entérica ambiental (DEA) é o elo perdido que sustenta a desnutrição em países de baixa e média renda. A DEA é uma condição subclínica causada pela exposição repetida a micróbios fecais enteropatogênicos e não patogênicos por via oral, que causa malformação vilosa intestinal, alterações multiômicas, inflamação intestinal e sistêmica crônica, e disbiose intestinal. A DEA impacta a capacidade absortiva e a integridade do intestino, causando um ciclo de desnutrição em crianças. Atualmente, não existe protocolo para o diagnóstico e tratamento da DEA, portanto, acredita-se amplamente que a DEA seja altamente prevalente e subdiagnosticada em países de baixa e média renda. Objetivo: Até onde sabemos, esta é a primeira revisão sistemática para estudar o impacto das intervenções nutricionais na DEA. Estudos anteriores apresentaram resultados inconsistentes, portanto, a síntese dessas informações é essencial para obter uma compreensão mais profunda da DEA e formular novos alvos de intervenção contra a desnutrição infantil. Métodos: Esta revisão sistemática está registrada no PROSPERO (CRD42022363157) de acordo com o PRISMA, utilizando palavras-chave referentes à suplementação de nutrientes, DEA e falha no crescimento infantil. Resultados: Onze artigos foram elegíveis para revisão, compreendendo ensaios clínicos randomizados realizados principalmente no continente africano, com um total de 5689 crianças saudáveis elegíveis para análise. Conclusão: A revisão sistemática ilustra que as intervenções nutricionais têm um impacto mínimo nos biomarcadores da DEA e no crescimento linear, e reflete a importância de entender melhor os mecanismos que causam a DEA e suas consequências. Parece que a contribuição anabólica da intervenção nutricional para o crescimento infantil é negada pela DEA.

The incidence of intestinal diseases, such as inflammatory bowel disease, gastric cancer, and colorectal cancer, has steadily increased over the past decades. The Hippo pathway is involved in cell proliferation, tissue and organ damage, energy metabolism, tumor formation, and other physiologic processes. Ferroptosis is a form of programmed cell death characterized by the accumulation of iron and lipid peroxides. The Hippo pathway and ferroptosis are associated with various intestinal diseases; however, the crosstalk between them is unclear. This review elaborates on the current research on the Hippo pathway and ferroptosis in the context of intestinal diseases. We summarized the connection between the Hippo pathway and ferroptosis to elucidate the underlying mechanism by which these pathways influence intestinal diseases. We speculate that a mutual regulatory mechanism exists between the Hippo pathway and ferroptosis and these two pathways interact in several ways to regulate intestinal diseases.

Intestinal parasites continue to be a public health problem in low- and middle-income countries. Broad use of anthelmintics during deworming programs is still necessary in many regions. However, description of the usage of these medications in general medical practice has been limited. The objective of this study was to determine the use of anthelmintic drugs and their indications in a group of Colombian patients. This was a descriptive study from a drug-dispensing database, identifying patients with prescriptions for anthelmintic drugs. A total of 381 cases were randomly selected, and their medical records were reviewed, analyzing sociodemographic, clinical, and pharmacological variables (indication of use). The lack of diagnosis registration or clinical manifestations of parasites was determined as a prescription without indication. In total, 50.9% (n = 194) of patients were female, and 67.4% of all patients were under 18 yr of age. The diagnosis of helminthiases was clearly stated in 114 (29.9%) patients, and only 4.2% (n = 16) of these had microbiological confirmation. The most commonly used anthelmintic drug was albendazole (70.4% of all prescriptions). The use of anthelmintics was not indicated in 266 cases (69.8%). Nutritional supplements or vitamin prescriptions were associated with using anthelmintics without indication (odds ratio: 2.25; 95% confidence interval: 1.26-4.03). A high proportion of patients lacked symptoms or diagnoses in their clinical records that supported the use of anthelmintic drugs.

Currently, the gut-organ axis has become a hot research topic. As increasing attention has been paid to the role of gut microbiota in the health of organs, the complex and integrated dialogue mechanism between the gastrointestinal tract and the associated microbiota has been demonstrated in more and more studies. Skin as the largest organ in the human body serves as the primary barrier protecting the human body from damage. The proposal of the gut-skin axis has established a bidirectional link between the gut and the skin. The disturbance of gut microbiota can lead to the occurrence of skin diseases, the mechanism of which is complex and may involve multiple pathways in immunity, metabolism, and internal secretion. According to the theory of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM), the connection between the intestine and the skin can be established through the lung, and the interior disorders will definitely cause symptoms on the exterior. This paper reviews the research progress in the gut-skin axis and its correlation with TCM theory and provides ideas and a basis for cli-nical treatment and drug development of skin and intestinal diseases.
