RESUMEN

Our ability to identify an object is often impaired by the presence of preceding and/or succeeding task-irrelevant items. Understanding this temporal interference is critical for any theoretical account of interference across time and for minimizing its detrimental effects. Therefore, we used the same sequences of 3 orientation items, orientation estimation task, and computational models, to examine temporal interference over both short (<150 ms; visual masking) and long (175-475 ms; temporal crowding) intervals. We further examined how inter-item similarity modifies these different instances of temporal interference. Qualitatively different results emerged for interference of different scales. Interference over long intervals mainly degraded the precision of the target encoding while interference over short intervals mainly affected the signal-to-noise ratio. Although both interference instances modulated substitution errors (reporting a wrong item) and were alleviated with dissimilar items, their characteristics were markedly disparate. These findings suggest that different mechanisms mediate temporal interference of different scales.

Introduction: Central auditory processing disorder (CAPD) refers to difficulties in processing audible signals not attributable to impaired hearing sensitivity or mental impairment. The demographic characteristics of pediatric CAPD and its prevalence are still debatable. Due to varied definitions and differences in the diagnostic criteria for CAPD, the approximate prevalence measure varies from 0.5 to 7% of the population. Thus, a retrospective study on prevalence in individuals with CAPD was conducted. Method: A total of 3537 cases with ear-related problems were reported to Audiology OPD at All India Institute of Speech and Hearing from June 2017 to July 2019 between the age range of 6-18 years. Of these, 32 cases were diagnosed with CAPD, and this data was available for review. Results: The prevalence of individuals with CAPD reported in this duration was 0.7%. The results also revealed that the prevalence was higher among males and individuals of lower socio-economic status. Their significant symptoms were poor academic performance and difficulty following commands or instructions. The data also revealed that speech perception in noise was the most affected process, followed by binaural integration in these individuals. Conclusion: The study provides insight into the vulnerable population who can get CAPD (e.g., children and males or people from lower socio-economic backgrounds).

The advent of wearable sensing platforms capable of continuously monitoring physiological parameters indicative of health status have resulted in a paradigm shift for clinical medicine. The accessibility and adaptability of such portable, unobtrusive devices enables proactive, personalized care based on real-time physiological insights. While wearable sensing platforms exhibit powerful capabilities for continuously monitoring physiological parameters, device fabrication often requires specialized facilities and technical expertise, restricting deployment opportunities and innovation potential. The recent emergence of rapid prototyping approaches to sensor fabrication, such as laser-induced graphene (LIG), provides a pathway for circumventing these barriers through low-cost, scalable fabrication. However, inherent limitations in laser processing restrict the spatial resolution of LIG-based flexible electronic devices to the minimum laser spot size. For a CO2 laser-a commonly reported laser for device production-this corresponds to a feature size of ∼120 µm. Here, we demonstrate a facile, low-cost stencil-masking technique to reduce the minimum resolvable feature size of a LIG-based device from 120 ± 20 µm to 45 ± 3 µm when fabricated by CO2 laser. Characterization of device performance reveals this stencil-masked LIG (s-LIG) method yields a concomitant improvement in electrical properties, which we hypothesize is the result of changes in macrostructure of the patterned LIG. We showcase the performance of this fabrication method via production of common sensors including temperature and multi-electrode electrochemical sensors. We fabricate fine-line microarray electrodes not typically achievable via native CO2 laser processing, demonstrating the potential of the expanded design capabilities. Comparing microarray sensors made with and without the stencil to traditional macro LIG electrodes reveals the s-LIG sensors have significantly reduced capacitance for similar electroactive surface areas. Beyond improving sensor performance, the increased resolution enabled by this metal stencil technique expands capabilities for scalable fabrication of high-performance wearable sensors in low-resource settings without reliance on traditional fabrication pathways.

Warmed-over flavor (WOF) is an off-flavor in surimi gels. Yeast extract (YE) could improve the aroma properties of food. However, the effect of YE on the WOF in surimi gels and its mechanism was still unclear. In this study, aroma profiles, the composition of aroma compounds and aroma precursors, concentrations of WOF compounds, and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) of surimi gels with different amounts of YE were investigated by molecular sensory science and chromatographic techniques. Moreover, the effect of pyrazines and esters introduced by YE on WOF was also tested by sensory analysis. The addition of no less than 1% YE to surimi gels significantly weakened WOF. However, YE did not decrease the concentrations of WOF compounds and did not change the fatty acid composition and TBARS in surimi gels. Conversely, the addition of YE significantly increased the contents of free amino acids, N-containing compounds, and esters in surimi gels. The contents of total free amino acids, 2,6-dimethylpyrazine, and ethyl acetate in surimi gels with 2.5% YE were 1.5, 21, and 2.1 times higher than those in the control, respectively. Additionally, the sensory results of the spiked aroma models containing WOF compounds, 2,6-dimethylpyrazine, and esters showed that more than 9.4 µg/kg of 2,6-dimethylpyrazine with a baked-potato note and more than 6.1 µg/kg of ethyl acetate and 11.2 µg/kg of butyl acetate with a fruity note could significantly mask WOF. In conclusion, WOF in surimi gels could be masked by YE due to the high concentrations of pyrazines and esters. Practical Application: Yeast extracts could decrease the warmed-over flavor (WOF) due to the high concentrations of pyrazines (baked-potato note) and esters (fruity note). This finding extends the application of yeast extracts in the food industry. On the other hand, this study presents a reasonable solution for the reduction of WOF in surimi products.

Background: Autistic masking refers to some autistic individuals' tendency to hide, suppress, or camouflage their autistic traits, autistic identity, or autism diagnosis. Autistic masking also may include unconscious or conscious attempts to mimic the behavioral, cognitive, or sensory styles of nonautistic neurotypical people and to suppress natural forms of autistic behavior, cognition, and reactions to sensory experiences. Since autistic people are a stigmatized minority in many neurotypical dominated societies, passing as nonautistic through autistic masking may be an attempt to avoid autism stigma and a reaction to previous interpersonal trauma. Increased autistic masking behaviors are associated with reports of increased depression, anxiety, burnout, and exhaustion in autistic people, and thus, exploring the roots and impact of autistic masking is an important mental health topic. Methods: This study investigated the relationships between autistic masking and depression, anxiety, gender identity, sexual orientation, interpersonal trauma, self-esteem, authenticity, and autistic community involvement. Participants were autistic adults (n = 342) recruited through autistic social media groups. Results: This study found that higher self-reported autistic masking behaviors were associated with higher reports of past interpersonal trauma, greater anxiety and depression symptoms, lower self-esteem, lower authenticity, and lower participation within the autistic community. Autistic masking was not associated with gender identity or sexual orientation. Conclusions: The results of this study highlight the relationship between autistic masking and past interpersonal trauma, finding that autistic masking behavior is associated with mental health, self-esteem, and authenticity risks for autistic adults. We call into question the teaching of autistic masking strategies in therapies and education programs for autistic people based on the negative associations with autistic masking presented in this study and other research in this field.


Why is this an important issue? Autistic masking refers to autistic people suppressing their natural autistic traits, responses, and behaviors, in an attempt, consciously or unconsciously, to hide or reduce the visibility of their autistic traits, autistic identity, or autism diagnosis. High levels of autistic masking are associated with negative mental health, authenticity challenges, and burnout for autistic people. Interpersonal pressuring, past traumatic social experiences, and autism stigma potentially fuel autistic masking. What is the purpose of this study? This study aimed to investigate relationship between autistic masking and depression, anxiety, interpersonal trauma, self-esteem, authenticity, autistic community involvement, gender identity, and sexual orientation. What did the researchers do? We recruited 342 autistic adult participants through autistic social media groups on Facebook to complete a 30-minute anonymous survey online comprising validated scales to measure autistic masking, depression, anxiety, interpersonal trauma, self-esteem, and authenticity. Additional questions were asked about demographic factors, such as gender identity and sexual orientation, and we asked open-ended questions about past social trauma and intersectional issues. What were the results of the study? We found that higher self-reported autistic masking behaviors were associated with higher reports of past interpersonal trauma, specifically being shamed and teased about autistic traits, and broader experiences of emotional and physical abuse. Masking was also associated with greater anxiety and more depression symptoms, lower self-esteem, lower authentic living, greater accepting of external influence, higher self-alienation, and lower participation within the autistic community. Autistic masking was not found to be associated with gender identity or sexual orientation. Participants who reported involvement in previous applied behavior analysis therapy reported higher past interpersonal trauma than participants involved in some other forms of therapy such as cognitive behavior therapy. What do the findings add to what was already known? This study supports previous research associating autistic masking with depression and anxiety symptoms, and lower reported authenticity, such as autistic people feeling they were not being true to themselves, or revealing their genuine selves to others. This study is the first to quantitatively investigate relationships between autistic masking and past interpersonal traumas, self-esteem, authenticity, and autistic community involvement. What are potential weaknesses in the study? Our sample is not representative of the U.S. population when it comes to race, educational level, gender, and sexual orientation. It was very White, highly educated, had few cisgender men, and sixty three percent were members of sexual minority groups. The majority of participants reported late diagnosis of autism. This sample potentially contained an overrepresentation of people with high levels of autistic masking or who more recently realized they were autistic masking in comparison with the general autistic population. We did not analyze differences between early-diagnosed and late-diagnosed cohorts. How will these findings help autistic adults now or in the future? This research calls into question the teaching of autistic masking strategies in parenting, education, and therapy programs for autistic people based on the negative associations of autistic masking. Our findings should be utilized as a strong call to action to push back against practices that encourage autistic masking and autistic trait shaming. Instead we advocate for promoting forms of parenting, education, and therapy that respect autistic people's traits, communication styles, sensory needs, and autistic identity.

BACKGROUND: Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) remains a global health concern due to its poor survival rate. This study aimed to investigate the influence of medical determinants and socioeconomic status on survival outcomes of RCC patients. We analyzed the survival data of 41,563 RCC patients recorded under the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) program from 2012 to 2020. METHODS: We employed a competing risk model, assuming lifetime of RCC patients under various risks follows Chen distribution. This model accounts for uncertainty related to survival time as well as causes of death, including missing cause of death. For model analysis, we utilized Bayesian inference and obtained the estimate of various key parameters such as cumulative incidence function (CIF) and cause-specific hazard. Additionally, we performed Bayesian hypothesis testing to assess the impact of multiple factors on the survival time of RCC patients. RESULTS: Our findings revealed that the survival time of RCC patients is significantly influenced by gender, income, marital status, chemotherapy, tumor size, and laterality. However, we observed no significant effect of race and origin on patient's survival time. The CIF plots indicated a number of important distinctions in incidence of causes of death corresponding to factors income, marital status, race, chemotherapy, and tumor size. CONCLUSIONS: The study highlights the impact of various medical and socioeconomic factors on survival time of RCC patients. Moreover, it also demonstrates the utility of competing risk model for survival analysis of RCC patients under Bayesian paradigm. This model provides a robust and flexible framework to deal with missing data, which can be particularly useful in real-life situations where patients information might be incomplete.

Breast density is associated with risk of breast cancer (BC) diagnosis, impacting risk prediction tools and patient notification policies. Density affects mammography sensitivity and may influence screening intensity. Therefore, the observed association between density and BC diagnosis may not reflect the relationship between density and disease risk. We investigate the association between breast density and BC risk using data sourced from 33,542 women in the Breast Cancer Surveillance Consortium, 2000-2018. We estimated mammogram sensitivity and rates of screening mammography among dense (BI-RADS c, d) and non-dense (BI-RADS a, b) breasts. We used Kaplan-Meier estimates to summarize the relative risks of BC diagnosis (RRdx) by density and fit a natural history model to estimate the relative risks of BC onset (RRonset) given density-specific sensitivities. RRdx for dense versus non-dense breasts was 1.80 (95% CI 1.46 to 2.57). Based on estimated screening sensitivities of 0.88 and .78 for non-dense and dense breasts, respectively, RRonset was 1.73 (95% CI 1.43 to 2.25). Sensitivity analyses suggested higher breast density is robustly associated with increased risk of BC onset, similar in magnitude to the increased risk of BC diagnosis. These finding support laws requiring notifications to women with dense breasts of their increased BC risk.

The purpose of the study was to investigate the influence of different tooth-colored substrates and restoration thicknesses on the final color of gingiva-colored resin-based composites (GCRBCs). Five different shades of GCRBCs [light pink (LP), dark pink (DP), orange (Or), brown (Br), and purple (P)] were used to prepare disc-shaped specimens with 2 different thicknesses: 1.0 mm, and 2.0 mm. GCRBC discs (n = 5) were placed over 3 different tooth-colored substrates (ND1, ND5, and ND9) and color parameters were assessed using a spectroradiometer. Color differences (∆E*ab and ∆E00) were calculated using CIELab and CIEDE2000 formulas and compared to 50:50% perceptibility (PT: ∆E*ab = 1.7, ΔE00 = 1.1) and acceptability (AT: ∆E*ab = 3.7, ΔE00 = 2.8) visual thresholds. Color variation data were statistically analyzed using two-way ANOVAs followed by Bonferroni's post hoc tests (a = 05). The ∆E*ab and ΔE00 values of GCRBCs placed over ND9 substrates were significantly higher in the LP-1.0 mm and Or-1.0 mm groups that presented values above AT (p< .001).Regardless of the substrate color and GCRBC thickness applied, ∆E*ab and ΔE00 values below AT were recorded in the gingival color groups of P. Substrate color significantly affected the color differences in the gingival color groups of LP, DP, and Or with a restoration thickness of 1.0 mm (p < .05). Gingival color, restoration thickness, and substrate color influenced the color differences of GCRBCs. When the gingival color was a lighter gingival color, rather than dark purple, the masking ability was decreased, especially with a restoration thickness of 1.0 mm.

In competing risks data, in practice, there may be lack of information or uncertainty about the true failure type, termed as 'missing failure type', for some subjects. We consider a general pattern of missing failure type in which we observe, if not the true failure type, a set of possible failure types containing the true one. In this work, we focus on both parametric and non-parametric estimation based on current status data with two competing risks and the above-mentioned missing failure type. Here, the missing probabilities are assumed to be time-dependent, that is, dependent on both failure and monitoring time points, in addition to being dependent on the true failure type. This makes the missing mechanism non-ignorable. We carry out maximum likelihood estimation and obtain the asymptotic properties of the estimators. Simulation studies are conducted to investigate the finite sample properties of the estimators. Finally, the methods are illustrated through a data set on hearing loss.

Auditory masking methods originally employed to assess behavioral frequency selectivity have evolved over the years to infer cochlear tuning. Behavioral forward masking thresholds for spectrally notched noise maskers and a fixed, low-level probe tone provide accurate estimates of cochlear tuning. Here, we use this method to investigate the effect of stimulus duration on human cochlear tuning at 500 Hz and 4 kHz. Probes were 20-ms sinusoids at 10 dB sensation level. Maskers were noises with a spectral notch symmetrically and asymmetrically placed around the probe frequency. For seven participants with normal hearing, masker levels at masking threshold were measured in forward masking for various notch widths and for masker durations of 30 and 400 ms. Measurements were fitted assuming rounded exponential filter shapes and the power spectrum model of masking, and equivalent rectangular bandwidths (ERBs) were inferred from the fits. At 4 kHz, masker thresholds were higher for the shorter maskers but ERBs were not significantly different for the two masker durations (ERB30ms=294 Hz vs. ERB400ms=277 Hz). At 500 Hz, by contrast, notched-noise curves were shallower for the 30-ms than the 400-ms masker, and ERBs were significantly broader for the shorter masker (ERB30ms=126 Hz vs. ERB400ms=55 Hz). We discuss possible factors that may underlay the duration effect at low frequencies and argue that it may not be possible to fully control for those factors. We conclude that tuning estimates are not affected by maker duration at high frequencies but should be measured and interpreted with caution at low frequencies.

An improved Finite Element Model(FEM) is applied to compare the biomechanical stability of plates with three different options in the treatment of distal fibula fractures in this study. The Computed Tomography(CT) scan of the knee to ankle segment of a volunteer was performed. A 3D fibula FEM was reconstructed based on the CT data. Three different loads (uni-pedal standing, torsion, and twisting) were applied, the same as in the experiments in the literature. The stresses and strains of the three options were compared under the same loads, using a 4-hole locking plate (Option A), a 5-hole locking plate (Option B), and a 6-hole locking plate (Option C) in a standard plate for lateral internal fixation. The simulation results show that all three options showed a stress masking effect. Option C had the best overall biomechanical performance and could effectively distribute the transferred weight. This is because option C has greater torsional stiffness and better biomechanical stability than options A and B, and therefore, option C is the recommended internal fixation method for distal fibula fractures. The Finite Element Analysis(FEA) method developed in this work applies to the stress analysis of fracture treatment options in other body parts.

Mefloquine (MQ) is an antimalarial medication prescribed to treat or malaria prevention.. When taken by children, vomiting usually occurs, and new doses of medication frequently need to be taken. So, developing pediatric medicines using taste-masked antimalarial drug complexes is mandatory for the success of mefloquine administration. The hypothesis that binding mefloquine to an ion-exchange resin (R) could circumvent the drug's bitter taste problem was proposed, and solid-state 13C cross-polarization magic angle spinning (CPMAS) NMR was able to follow MQ-R mixtures through chemical shift and relaxation measurements. The nature of MQ-R complex formation could then be determined. Impedimetric electronic tongue equipment also verified the resinate taste-masking efficiency in vitro. Variations in chemical shifts and structure dynamics measured by proton relaxation properties (e.g., T1ρH) were used as probes to follow the extension of mixing and specific interactions that would be present in MQ-R. A significant decrease in T1ρH values was observed for MQ carbons in MQ-R complexes, compared to the ones in MQ (from 100-200 ms in MQ to 20-50 ms in an MQ-R complex). The results evidenced that the cationic resin interacts strongly with mefloquine molecules in the formulation of a 1:1 ratio complex. Thus, 13C CPMAS NMR allowed the confirmation of the presence of a binding between mefloquine and polacrilin in the MQ-R formulation studied.

Introduction: Human Herpesvirus 6B (HHV-6B) impedes host immune responses by downregulating class I MHC molecules (MHC-I), hindering antigen presentation to CD8+ T cells. Downregulation of MHC-I disengages inhibitory receptors on natural killer (NK) cells, resulting in activation and killing of the target cell if NK cell activating receptors such as NKG2D have engaged stress ligands upregulated on the target cells. Previous work has shown that HHV-6B downregulates three MHC-like stress ligands MICB, ULBP1, and ULBP3, which are recognized by NKG2D. The U20 glycoprotein of the related virus HHV-6A has been implicated in the downregulation of ULBP1, but the precise mechanism remains undetermined. Methods: We set out to investigate the role of HHV-6B U20 in modulating NK cell activity. We used HHV-6B U20 expressed as a recombinant protein or transduced into target cells, as well as HHV-6B infection, to investigate binding interactions with NK cell ligands and receptors and to assess effects on NK cell activation. Small-angle X-ray scattering was used to align molecular models derived from machine-learning approaches. Results: We demonstrate that U20 binds directly to ULBP1 with sub-micromolar affinity. Transduction of U20 decreases NKG2D binding to ULBP1 at the cell surface but does not decrease ULBP1 protein levels, either at the cell surface or in toto. HHV-6B infection and soluble U20 have the same effect. Transduction of U20 blocks NK cell activation in response to cell-surface ULBP1. Structural modeling of the U20 - ULBP1 complex indicates some similarities to the m152-RAE1γ complex.

Randomized clinical trials provide reassurances that confounding factors are balanced at baseline whereas blinding is essential to assure the balance of extraneous factors thereafter. This article provides a three-part taxonomy of pitfalls that can arise because of inadequate blinding in clinical trials. We introduce a cautionary framework for readers interpreting a blinded randomized trial for evidence-based medicine. Each pitfall is illustrated with a relevant example of a potential bias resulting from knowledge of group assignment. Several pitfalls occur during the conduct of the study including inadequate blinding of the intervention group, control group, or responsible clinicians. Additional pitfalls relate to data analysis including unsubstantiated assertions of blinding and subverted tests for blinding. Further pitfalls arise due to surrounding oversight including unblinding of research ethics boards and scientific reviewers. These caveats are sources of misunderstanding when observing the apparent connection between a clinical intervention and patient outcomes. An awareness of specific pitfalls might help advance the interpretation and application of blinded randomized clinical trials to inform evidence-based medical care.

Cornelian cherry fruits contain a wide range of phenolic acids, flavonoids, and other secondary metabolites. Selected flavonoids may inhibit the perceiving of bitterness, however, the full mechanism with all TAS2R bitter taste receptors is not known. The aim of the study was to determine the inhibitory effect of Cornus mas phenolics against the bitterness receptors TAS2R13 and TAS2R3 through functional in vitro assays and coupling studies. The overall effect was validated by analysing the inhibition of the receptors activity in cells treated with tested cornelian cherry extracts. The strength of interaction with both TAS2R receptors varied between studied compounds with different binding affinity. Most compounds bonded with the TAS2R3 receptor through a long-distant hydrophobic interaction with Trp89A and π-π orbital overlapping-between phenolic and tryptophane aromatic rings. For TAS2R13 observed were various mechanisms of interaction with the compounds. Nonetheless, naringin and quercetin had most similar binding affinity to chloroquine and denatonium-the model agonists for the receptor.

Clarithromycin (CLA) is the preferred drug for treating respiratory infections in pediatric patients, but it has the drawbacks of extreme bitterness and poor water solubility. The purpose of this study was to improve solubility and mask the extreme bitterness of CLA. We use Hot Melt Extrusion (HME) to convert CLA and Eudragit® E100 into Solid Dispersion (SD). Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) were used to identify the crystalline form of the prepared SDs, which showed that the crystalline CLA was converted to an amorphous form. At the same time, an increase in dissolution rate was observed, which is one of the properties of SD. The results showed that the prepared SD significantly increased the dissolution rate of crystalline CLA. Subsequently, the SD of CLA was prepared into a dry suspension with excellent suspending properties and a taste-masking effect. The bitterness bubble chart and taste radar chart showed that the SD achieved the bitter taste masking of CLA. Principal components analysis (PCA) of the data generated by the electronic tongue showed that the bitter taste of CLA was significantly suppressed using the polymer Eudragit® E100. Subsequently, a dry suspension was prepared from the SD of CLA. In conclusion, this work illustrated the importance of HME for preparing amorphous SD of CLA, which can solve the problems of bitterness-masking and poor solubility. It is also significant for the development of compliant pediatric formulations.

Conspecific adults impose strong negative density-dependent effects on seed survival nearby parent trees, however, the underlying mechanisms are diversified and remain unclear. In this study, we presented consistent evidence that parent-scented forest floor masked seed odor, reduced cache recovery rate by scatter-hoarding animals, and then increased seed dispersal far away from mother trees. Our results showed that seed odors of Korean pine Pinus koraiensis match well with the volatile profile of their forest floor. Moreover, scatter-hoarding animals selectively transported P. koraiensis seeds toward the areas where seed odor was more contrasting against the background substrate, possibly due to the fact that accumulation of conspecific volatile compounds in caches hindered seed detection by scatter-hoarding animals. Our study provides insight into the role of leaf litter in directing seed dispersal process, representing a novel mechanism by which P. koraiensis increases selection for seed dispersal far away from the parent tree.

Motion sickness also known as kinetosis is a condition in which there exists a disagreement between visually perceived movement and the vestibular system's sense of movement. Nausea, vomiting, dizziness, fatigue, and headache are the most common symptoms of motion sickness. This study mainly focuses on the taste masking of Promethazine Hydrochloride (PMZ) by inclusion complexation method, its formulation development in the chewing gum form by using directly compressible gum base HIG® and its quality and performance testing. Different molar ratios (1:1, 1:2, 1:3 and 1:4) of PMZ-cyclodextrin complexes were prepared by using ß-Cyclodextrin (ß-CD) as a taste masking agent. These complexes were evaluated for FTIR, DSC, % Entrapment Efficiency, % drug yield, and taste evaluation by E-Tongue. The optimized ratio was further evaluated by sophisticated analytical techniques such as Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD). A central composite design (CCD) (3 ^2) was utilized to examine the effects of independent variables (amount of gum-X1 and amount of plasticizer-X2) on dependent variables (%CDRY1 and hardness Y2). The prepared gums were evaluated for drug content, organoleptic properties, in-vitro dissolution testing by fabricated disintegration apparatus, texture analysis, etc. The optimization statistics showed that on decreasing the amount of gum, in- vitro drug release increases and hardness decreases. The optimized batch MCG-2 of Promethazine MCG showed 92.34 ± 0.92% of drug release, whereas for marketed formulation (Phenergan®-25 mg) drug release value was 86.19 ± 1.88%. Results provided evidence that PMZ MCGs could be a better alternative to conventional tablet formulations with improved drug release, palatability and texture.

Within the realm of consciousness research, different methods of measuring the content of visual awareness are used: On the one hand, subjective measures require a report of sensory experiences related to a stimulus. On the other hand, objective measures rely on the observer's performance to accurately detect or discriminate the stimulus. The most appropriate measure of awareness is currently debated. To contribute to this debate, we review findings on the relation between subjective and objective measures of awareness. Although subjective measures sometimes lag behind objective measures, a substantial number of studies demonstrates a convergence of measures. Based on the reviewed studies, we identify five aspects relevant for achieving a convergence of measures. Future research could then identify and empirically test the boundary conditions, under which a convergence or divergence of subjective and measures of awareness is observed.

Introduction: Professional psychological qualities are crucial for individuals' career development and overall well-being, especially in clinical medical professions. Medical students often face significant work, academic, and doctor-patient communication pressures, which can challenge their mental and emotional health. Measuring and understanding the relationship between medical students' professional psychological qualities and their mental health is of significant practical importance. Methods: This study developed a comprehensive professional psychological qualities scale through a series of qualitative and quantitative studies, consisting of three main components and thirteen secondary dimensions. The scale's reliability was assessed using Cronbach's α coefficients. In Study 2, the scale was administered to 972 medical students to explore their anxiety and depression levels. A simple mediation analysis was conducted to investigate the relationship between professional psychological qualities, anxiety, and depression. Results: The professional psychological qualities scale demonstrated satisfactory reliability, with a total scale α coefficient of 0.947 and subscale α coefficients ranging from 0.895 to 0.933. The mediation analysis revealed that medical students' professional psychological qualities directly negatively impact depression levels and indirectly positively influence them via their effects on anxiety levels, exhibiting an overall masking effect unrelated to depression levels. Discussion: This study addresses the gap in research on the professional psychological qualities of medical students by providing a reliable measurement tool. The findings shed light on the complex mechanisms through which these qualities impact the mental health process. The scale can be used by other researchers to assess medical students' professional psychological qualities and further investigate their relationship with mental health outcomes.
