Background: Sustained and significant increases in Canadian rates of infectious syphilis prompted the National Advisory Committee on Sexually Transmitted and Blood-Borne Infections (NAC-STBBI) to update the existing screening recommendation for non-pregnant adults and adolescents. Methods: These guidelines were developed following the 2014 World Health Organization Handbook. The research question was: "What is the clinical utility of syphilis screening using risk-based versus population-wide approaches for adolescents and adults?" The evidence was assessed using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) approach. Results: The environmental scan included 11 guidelines on syphilis screening published between 2014 and January 2023. Two systematic reviews were identified and included. In the updated literature search from November 6, 2019, to January 17, 2023, there were no published systematic reviews on the effectiveness of risk-based screening or the comparison of risk-based and interval screening; however, one recent randomized control trial in Canada was published. Evidence for outcomes, patient values and preferences, resources, acceptability, equity, cost and cost effectiveness and feasibility were reviewed. Conclusion: This statement provides two screening recommendations for adults and adolescents. Recommendation 1: NAC-STBBI recommends syphilis screening in all sexually active persons with a new or multiple partners and/or upon request of the individual. They also recommend screening every three to six months in individuals with multiple partners. Recommendation 2: NAC-STBBI recommends that targeted "opt-out" screening programs should be considered as frequently as every three months when serving population groups and/or communities experiencing a high prevalence of syphilis (and other STBBI). Both are strong recommendations with moderate certainty of evidence.

To better understand the vulnerabilities of pregnant women during the COVID-19 pandemic, we conducted a comprehensive, retrospective cohort study to assess differences in immune responses to SARS-CoV-2 infection between pregnant and non-pregnant women. Nasopharyngeal swabs and serum specimens from 90 pregnant and 278 age-matched non-pregnant women were collected from 15 March 2020 to 23 July 2021 at NewYork-Presbyterian Queens Hospital in New York City. Multiplex reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction, neutralizing antibody, and cytokine array assays were used to assess the incidence, viral load, antibody titers and profiles, and examine cytokine expression patterns. Our results show a lower incidence of SARS-CoV-2 infection in pregnant women compared with non-pregnant women. Pregnant women infected with SARS-CoV-2 exhibited a substantially lower viral load. In addition, the levels of both anti-spike protein receptor-binding domain IgG neutralizing antibodies and anti-N Protein IgG were elevated in pregnant women. Finally, cytokine profiling revealed differential expression of leptin across cohorts. These findings suggest that pregnancy is associated with distinct immune and virological responses to SARS-CoV-2 infection, characterized by lower infection rates, substantially lower viral loads, and enhanced antibody production. Differential cytokine expression indicates unique immune modulation in pregnant women.

Micronutrient deficiencies remain a public health burden among non-pregnant women in developing countries, including Nepal. Hence, this study examined micronutrient deficiencies among non-pregnant Nepalese women aged 15-49 using the 2016 Nepal National Micronutrient Status Survey (NNMSS). Data for 2143 non-pregnant women was extracted from the 2016 NNMSS. The study analysed the levels of ferritin, soluble transferrin receptor (sTfR), red blood cell (RBC) folate, and zinc of the participants. Multivariable logistic analysis was carried out to assess factors associated with micronutrient deficiencies. The prevalence of ferritin, sTfR, folate, and zinc was observed to be 19%, 13%, 16%, and 21%, respectively. Non-pregnant women from the Janajati region were significantly less prone to high levels of ferritin [adjusted odds ratio (AOR): 0.45; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.25, 0.80], and those who had body mass index (BMI) of 25 kg/m2 or higher had significantly elevated ferritin levels [AOR: 2.69; 95% CI: 1.01, 7.17]. Non-pregnant women aged 35-49 years were significantly less predisposed to folate deficiency [AOR: 0.58; 95% CI: 0.40, 0.83], and the odds of zinc deficiency were significantly lower among non-pregnant women from wealthier households [AOR: 0.48; 95% CI: 0.31, 0.76]. This study provides further insight into screening high-risk subgroups and instituting public health interventions to address the prevailing micronutrient deficiencies among non-pregnant Nepalese women.

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus agalactiae is a recognized pathogen that primarily affects infants and pregnant women. However, its increasingly important role in causing invasive infections among non-pregnant adults has become a significant health concern due to the severity and variety of its clinical impacts. METHODS: Nonduplicate S. agalactiae clinical strains associated with clinical infections (n = 139) were isolated from non-pregnant adults in Shandong, China. Antibiotic susceptibility testing, whole-genome sequencing and genomic analyses were conducted to characterize the genome and identify resistance features of these strains. RESULTS: The strains exhibited universal susceptibility to penicillin, ampicillin, cefotaxime, meropenem, linezolid and vancomycin. Notably, high resistance rates were observed for erythromycin (91.4%), clindamycin (89.2%), levofloxacin (84.2%), tetracycline (54.0%) and, to a lesser extent, chloramphenicol (12.9%). Serotyping revealed seven serotypes and one non-typeable strain. Serotypes Ia, Ib, III and V predominated, representing 95.7% of the strains. Nineteen sequence types were categorized into seven clonal complexes, with CC10 being the most prevalent at 48.9%. The resistance genes mreA (100%), ermB (70.5%) and tetM (46.0%) were commonly detected. All the isolates carried at least one pilus backbone determinant and one alpha-like protein gene, with the PI-1+PI-2a and the bca gene being the most frequent at 84.2% and 54.7%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: While S. agalactiae strains in non-pregnant adults retain sensitivity to ß-lactam antibiotics, the elevated resistance to erythromycin, clindamycin, levofloxacin and tetracycline is concerning. Given the growing elderly population worldwide, the burden of S. agalactiae infections is significant. Continuous surveillance of serotype distribution and antibiotic resistance patterns is imperative for targeted prevention and therapeutic strategies.

Background Liver enzyme abnormalities can indicate underlying liver health issues and are influenced by various factors. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of liver enzyme abnormalities and their associated factors among nonpregnant and nonlactating (NPNL) women in Bangladesh. Methodology A cross-sectional study was conducted among 251 NPNL Bangladeshi women. Data on demographic, socioeconomic, and health-related variables were collected. Logistic regression analysis was used to determine the association between liver enzyme abnormalities and associated factors. Results The prevalence of liver enzyme abnormalities among participants was determined, with associated factors such as age, body mass index (BMI), monthly income, and food security status examined. Elevated alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) levels were observed in 54 (21.5%) and 47 (18.7%) of participants, respectively, with 116 (46.2%) exhibiting an AST/ALT ratio exceeding 1.00. Food insecurity was significantly associated with a higher prevalence of elevated ALT levels (24.4% vs. 8.7%, P = 0.02), as well as low monthly income (18.8%, 14.7% vs. 36.7%, P < 0.01) and higher BMI (11% vs. 27.7% and 25.6%, P = 0.02). Similar trends were observed for AST levels. Moreover, participants with a higher BMI exhibited significantly higher rates of at least one abnormal liver function enzyme (15.9% vs. 34.9%, P = 0.01). Logistic regression analysis revealed a significant association between abnormal liver enzyme levels and certain demographic and socioeconomic factors, specifically BMI and age. Conclusions This study provides insights into the prevalence of liver enzyme abnormalities and their associated factors among NPNL Bangladeshi women. The findings underscore the importance of addressing factors such as BMI and age in mitigating liver health issues in this population. Further research and targeted interventions are warranted to address these concerns effectively.

Surgeries that require general anesthesia occur in 1.5-2% of gestations. Isoflurane is frequently used because of its lower possibility of affecting fetal growth. Therefore, we examined the isoflurane anesthesia-induced effects on maternal hemodynamic and vascular changes. We hypothesized that isoflurane would enhance endothelium-dependent vasodilation as a consequence of increased nitric oxide and decreased metalloproteinases (MMPs). Female rats (n=28) were randomized into 4 groups (7 rats/group): conscious (non-anesthetized) non-pregnant group, non-pregnant anesthetized group, conscious pregnant group, and pregnant anesthetized group. Anesthesia was performed on the 20th pregnancy day, and hemodynamic parameters were monitored. Nitric oxide metabolites, gelatinolytic activity of MMP-2 and MMP-9, and the vascular function were assessed. Isoflurane caused no significant hemodynamic changes in pregnant compared with non-pregnant anesthetized group. Impaired acetylcholine-induced relaxations were observed only in conscious non-pregnant group (by approximately 62%) versus 81% for other groups. Phenylephrine-induced contractions were greater in endothelium-removed aorta segments of both pregnant groups (with or without isoflurane) compared with non-pregnant groups. Higher nitric oxide metabolites were observed in anesthetized pregnant in comparison with the other groups. Reductions in the 75 kDa activity and concomitant increases in 64 kDa MMP-2 isoforms were observed in aortas of pregnant anesthetized (or not) groups compared with conscious non-pregnant group. Isoflurane anesthesia shows stable effects on hemodynamic parameters and normal MMP-2 activation in pregnancy. Furthermore, there were increases in nitric oxide bioavailability, suggesting that isoflurane provides protective actions to the endothelium in pregnancy.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the predictors of acceptance and hesitancy of additional doses of any SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) vaccine among pregnant or recently pregnant and non-pregnant people of reproductive age and partners in Brazil. METHODS: We conducted an online cross-sectional study from June 2022 to April 2023 and invited women and partners between 18 and 49 years old to participate. We employed a snowball strategy to reach all potential eligible participants. Our primary outcome was the acceptance rate of the COVID-19 booster vaccine. We estimated the frequency and percentage for the three groups and compared categorical variables using the Chi-square test. Moreover, bivariate, backward stepwise regression, and subgroup analyses were performed to evaluate risk factors and predictors of COVID-19 vaccine booster hesitancy. We reported the effect size as OR with a 95% CI. RESULTS: We included 1487 participants, and among them, 334 (22.5%) were pregnant or recently pregnant people, 905 (60.8%) were non-pregnant people, and 247 (16.6%) were male partners. Pregnant and recently pregnant people showed greater hesitancy for the COVID-19 vaccine booster than non-pregnant people (28% vs 15%, P < 0.001) and male partners (28% vs 16%, P < 0.001). Non-pregnant women accepted the COVID-19 vaccine more often than pregnant or recently pregnant people (OR 1.75; 95% CI: 1.13-2.70). The associated factors to the reduced COVID-19 vaccine booster acceptance were family income between US$ 566-945.00 (54%), evangelic religion (65%), concern about vaccine safety (80%) and perceived common vaccine importance (93%). CONCLUSION: Pregnant people were more hesitant than non-pregnant people to accept the COVID-19 booster vaccine. Family income, religious beliefs, vaccine safety concerns, and perceived common vaccine importance were significant barriers to accepting COVID-19 booster vaccines. The impact of these factors was more evident among pregnant or recently pregnant people, emphasizing the harmful effect of misinformation among this vulnerable population.

What is already known about this topic?: Anemia is a significant public health issue affecting women globally. Prior studies in China predominantly concentrated on anemia in pregnant or reproductive-age women, leaving a gap in available data concerning anemia in non-pregnant women of all age groups in China. What is added by this report?: In 2021, the prevalence of anemia and moderate to severe anemia among women aged 18 years and older in urban China was 14.8% and 5.7%, respectively. Anemia prevalence exhibited significant variations based on factors such as age, body mass index (BMI), geographic location, and socioeconomic status. What are the implications for public health practice?: The strategy for addressing anemia should account for non-pregnant women aged 30-49 years and those aged 70 years and older, taking into consideration differences related to socioeconomic development and geography.

This review and case study illustrates a patient with a complete transverse transection of a non-pregnant uterus caused by blunt trauma associated with wearing a safety belt. The 31-year-old patient, who had a previous cesarean section, presented with impending hypovolemic shock caused by intra-abdominal hemorrhage secondary to blunt trauma while wearing a safety belt. On physical examination, a transverse straight line of ecchymosis along the line of a fastened safety belt was noted without any other external injury. The operative findings revealed a complete transverse transection which had cut through the lower part of the non-pathological, normal-sized uterus with active bleeding and mild injury to the small bowel without active bleeding. Total hysterectomy and simple closure of the small bowel were performed with successful outcomes. We hypothesize that transection was caused by the enormous pressure produced by blunt trauma transmitted through the abdomen by the fastened safety belt and the weakness of the uterine wall caused by the previous low transverse cesarean section which facilitated the separation and extension to the entire wall. In conclusion, this case study provides the following learning points: (1) Enormous forces produced by a fixed fastened safety belt during a car accident can cause complete transverse transection of a normal-sized, non-pathological uterus, leading to life-threatening intra-abdominal hemorrhage. (2) A previous cesarean section may potentiate the transection, especially when the uterus is repositioned above the pelvic brim. (3) The gynecologic condition should also be included in the differential diagnoses in cases of intra-abdominal hemorrhage. If highly suspected, gynecologists should be notified for early recognition and avoidance of delayed actions.

Streptococcus agalactiae (group B Streptococcus, GBS) has recently emerged as an important pathogen among adults. However, it is overlooked in this population, with all global efforts being directed towards its containment among pregnant women and neonates. This systematic review assessed the molecular epidemiology and compared how the lineages circulating among non-pregnant populations relate to those of pregnant and neonatal populations worldwide. A systematic search was performed across nine databases from 1 January 2000 up to and including 20 September 2021, with no language restrictions. The Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Prevalence Critical Appraisal Tool (PCAT) was used to assess the quality of included studies. The global population structure of GBS from the non-pregnant population was analysed using in silico typing and phylogenetic reconstruction tools. Twenty-four articles out of 13 509 retrieved across 9 databases were eligible. Most studies were conducted in the World Health Organization European region (12/24, 50 %), followed by the Western Pacific region (6/24, 25 %) and the Americas region (6/24, 25 %). Serotype V (23%, 2310/10240) and clonal complex (CC) 1 (29 %, 2157/7470) were the most frequent serotype and CC, respectively. The pilus island PI1 : PI2A combination (29 %, 3931/13751) was the most prevalent surface protein gene, while the tetracycline resistance tetM (55 %, 5892/10624) was the leading antibiotic resistance gene. This study highlights that, given the common serotype distribution identified among non-pregnant populations (V, III, Ia, Ib, II and IV), vaccines including these six serotypes will provide broad coverage. The study indicates advanced molecular epidemiology studies, especially in resource-constrained settings for evidence-based decisions. Finally, the study shows that considering all at-risk populations in an inclusive approach is essential to ensure the sustainable containment of GBS.

A ten-year-old mixed breed bitch was presented for a tissue prolapse protruding from her vulva. Following detailed examination and stabilization, the ovaries and uterine horns were removed by laparotomy, whereas the prolapsed tissue identified as uterus including cervix was removed vaginally. Histology confirmed uterine prolapse, a rare condition in bitches usually found shortly after birth especially due to dystocia. In contrast, the present case was found in a nulliparous non-pregnant bitch. Diagnostic and therapeutic approaches, including microbiological and histological findings, are described and discussed critically.

OBJECTIVES: The bacterium Listeria monocytogenes (Lm) is associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes. Infection occurs through consumption of contaminated food that is disseminated to the maternal-fetal interface. The influence on the gastrointestinal microbiome during Lm infection remains unexplored in pregnancy. The objective of this study was to determine the impact of listeriosis on the gut microbiota of pregnant macaques. METHODS: A non-human primate model of listeriosis in pregnancy has been previously described. Both pregnant and non-pregnant cynomolgus macaques were inoculated with Lm and bacteremia and fecal shedding were monitored for 14 days. Non-pregnant animal tissues were collected at necropsy to determine bacterial burden, and fecal samples from both pregnant and non-pregnant animals were evaluated by 16S rRNA next-generation sequencing. RESULTS: Unlike pregnant macaques, non-pregnant macaques did not exhibit bacteremia, fecal shedding, or tissue colonization by Lm. Dispersion of Lm during pregnancy was associated with a significant decrease in alpha diversity of the host gut microbiome, compared to non-pregnant counterparts. The combined effects of pregnancy and listeriosis were associated with a significant loss in microbial richness, although there were increases in some genera and decreases in others. CONCLUSIONS: Although pregnancy alone is not associated with gut microbiome disruption, we observed dysbiosis with listeriosis during pregnancy. The macaque model may provide an understanding of the roles that pregnancy and the gut microbiota play in the ability of Lm to establish intestinal infection and disseminate throughout the host, thereby contributing to adverse pregnancy outcomes and risk to the developing fetus.

A comparative cross-sectional study was conducted among 991 pregnant and 674 non-pregnant women of reproductive age attending healthcare facilities in Ibadan, Nigeria using the General Health Questionnaire-12 (GHQ), and WHO self-reporting questionnaire (SRQ). Logistic regression analysis was conducted to identify predictors of psychiatric morbidity at p < 0.05. A significantly higher proportion of pregnant women experienced psychological distress on the GHQ (51.8%) and psychiatric morbidity on SRQ (33.3%) compared with 28.6% and 18.2% of non-pregnant women, respectively. Predictors of psychiatric morbidity among pregnant women were the type of facility, poor satisfaction and communication with partners, the experience of violence in the home, previous abortions, and previous history of depression. Psychiatric morbidity among non-pregnant women was predicted by younger age, previous history of depression, poor satisfaction and communication with partners. There is a need for early identification of psychiatric morbidity among women of reproductive age, to ensure early interventions and prevent long-term disability.Impact statementWhat is already known on this subject? Psychiatric morbidity has immense effects on a woman's quality of life, social functioning, obstetric outcome, and economic productivity.What do the results of this study add? Psychiatric morbidity among women of reproductive age is high. Pregnant women when compared to non-pregnant women had significantly higher rates of psychiatric morbidity. This high prevalence of psychiatric morbidity in both groups was predicted by poor satisfaction and communication with partners, and a previous history of depression.What are the implications of these findings for clinical practice and/or further research? Simple screening for women of reproductive age attending healthcare facilities may help with the early identification of psychiatric morbidity leading to prompt interventions, and preventing long-term disability.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the prevalence of abnormal cervical smear results among pregnant and non-pregnant women with and without representation of the transformation zone (TZ) in a mid-sized city in Brazil. STUDY DESIGN: This observational analytical and retrospective study analyzed cervical smear results from pregnant and non-pregnant women in a mid-sized city in Brazil. Private data were collected at private clinics over seven years and from public services over 16 years. All results were reported according to Bethesda System. Pregnant women were separated from non-pregnant women, and women were stratified into two age groups (25-29 years and 30-34 years) in general analyses. For TZ representation and cytologic-histologic correlation, there was no age stratification. RESULTS: Among public services cervical smears, the frequency of atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US) was higher for pregnant women in the entire group (odds ratio [OR] 1.91; confidence interval [CI] 1.07-3.39) and among women from 30 to 40 years old (OR 2.79; CI 1.38-5.66). The same occurred for low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (LSIL) in the total group (OR 3.50; CI 1.44-8.53) and among women 30 to 40 years old (OR 4.57; CI 1.45-14.42). The frequency of ASC-US was higher in pregnant women with TZ representation exams than those without (OR 4.62; CI 2.17-9.84). The same occurred for those with atypical squamous cells, which cannot exclude high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (OR 9.81; CI 1.63-59.15) and LSIL (OR 10.47; CI 3.39-32.36). Among pregnant women with abnormal cervical smear results, 85.74% were followed up through cytology, and an average of 26.12% of patients underwent biopsy, of which almost all were positive for dysplasia. CONCLUSION: Pregnant and non-pregnant women did not differ in cervical smears with actual precursor lesions. Nevertheless, considering the opportunistic nature of Brazilian cervical cancer screening, prenatal visits present an opportunity to perform cervical smears in pregnant women. TZ representation correlated with higher rates of abnormal cervical smears, reinforcing the clinical importance of endocervical/metaplastic cell representation, including among pregnant women.

Background: Urinary biopyrrin (UBP) is an oxidative metabolite formed from the reaction of bilirubin with reactive oxygen species. Previous studies have explored the relationship between UBP levels and certain diseases or pregnancy. However, UBP levels in healthy nonpregnant women have not been well examined. We aimed to clarify the representative value of UBP in healthy nonpregnant women and explore its relationship with menstrual cycles and concomitant symptoms. Methods: We included healthy, nonpregnant Japanese women aged 20-39 years with normal body mass index and menstrual cycle. In total, 1260 urine samples collected during 43 menstrual cycles of 36 women were analyzed to determine the representative values and reference intervals of UBP levels. The correlation between daily UBP levels and the order of the day was explored, and median UBP levels of 5-day clusters were compared using Friedman and Mann-Whitney U tests. These analyses were also conducted in women with concomitant symptoms during the menstrual cycle. Results: The median UBP level in all samples was 0.2291 (reference: 0.0102-2.9335) µmol/gCr. There was no significant relationship between the median UBP level and menstrual cycle, regardless of the presence of self-manageable symptoms during or before menstruation. Conclusions: The representative UBP value and its reference interval can serve as standards for comparison with other populations. Our findings suggest that the UBP level may be an objective oxidative stress indicator that is less sensitive to menstrual cycle and concomitant symptoms. UBP levels in healthy nonpregnant women could be assessed regardless of the menstrual cycle and concomitant symptoms.

Objective: We analyzed the correlation between glycemic variability and psychological problems such as depression, anxiety disorder, and low self-esteem in pregnant and non-pregnant (excluding gestational diabetes) patients with diabetes. Besides its originality, this study might contribute to better / earlier diagnosis of these psychological conditions, with a special interest in pregnant diabetic women. Better management and cost reduction of care could be a consequence. Methods: We compared diabetic pregnant and non-pregnant women from the perspective of the glycemic variability (for a period of 15 days prior inclusion in the study) and their results on the standardized questionnaires: Beck depression inventory, Hamilton anxiety scale - HRSA, Rosenberg self-esteem test. Results and Conclusions: A statistically significant correlation was identified in both groups between the glycemic oscillation and depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem. Diabetic pregnant women had a higher statistical significance for the correlation between the glycemic oscillation and depression, as well as between the glycemic oscillation and anxiety than non-pregnant diabetic patients. The present data justify further research. Our results could be developed into a preliminary intervention protocol, using the daily glycemic values measurements, collected by patients.

Background: Hypertension in women is generally underestimated and undiagnosed as women are considered to be at a lower risk of cardiovascular disease than men in addition to gender-related differences in healthcare seeking behaviour and access to healthcare. As hypertension extends a substantial impact on the cardiovascular health of women and can pose an enormous burden on the healthcare systems in India, identification of its risk factors along with co-morbidities becomes necessary for planning of cardiovascular risk prevention, reduction and mitigation interventions. Aim: This study aimed at estimating the prevalence and associated demographic and lifestyle risk factors of hypertension (HT) along with examining comorbidity patterns in women of reproductive age (15-49 years) in India. Material and Methods: We analyzed data of 667,258 non-pregnant women of the reproductive age group (15-49 years) from the National Family Health Survey (NFHS)-4 dataset. We used maps to present the spatial patterns of HT in women across states and union territories and logistic regression modelling to identify associated factors. Results: The overall prevalence of HT was 10.9% among women (15-49 years), with 60.7% of these having at least one comorbidity. While the prevalence of 'HT only' was higher in women 15-29 years of age (48.0%), the prevalence of HT with co-morbidities was higher in women aged ≥30 years (63.3%). Logistic regression analysis showed higher odds of 'HT and ³ two comorbidities' with age ³30 years (AOR 3.46, 95% CI 3.23-3.72), higher odds of 'HT only' with alcohol consumption (AOR 1.32, 95%CI 1.23-1.42), and higher odds of 'HT and one comorbidity' with BMI ³23 Kg/m2 (AOR 1.17, 95%CI 1.14-1.21). Also, region-wise, the prevalence of HT was highest in the states of Uttar Pradesh (11.6%), Madhya Pradesh (8.0%), and Assam (6.9%). Conclusion: The high prevalence of HT among women aged 15-49 years has serious medical, socio-economic, implications that warrant urgent and immediate gender-specific healthcare interventions. Along with lifestyle modifications, early and timely screening of HT, increasing awareness among young school-going girls, including rural areas, could flatten the HT population curve in India.

BACKGROUND: Anaemia disproportionately affects women of reproductive age in sub-Saharan Africa including Nigeria. Yet, community-based studies on the prevalence and determinants of anaemia among women of reproductive age are scarce in Nigeria. DESIGN: A cross-sectional community-based survey using a nationally representative sample. OBJECTIVES: This study described anaemia prevalence and its associated factors among women of reproductive age, pregnant women, and non-pregnant women in Nigeria. METHODS: We analysed data from the 2018 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey. Pregnant women with a haemoglobin level less than 11 g/dL and non-pregnant women with a haemoglobin level less than 12 g/dL were considered anaemic. Anaemia was also categorized as mild, moderate, and severe. Pearson's chi-square test was used to evaluate the association between anaemia status and independent variables. All variables with ρ ⩽ 0.25 in bivariate analyses were further analysed using complex sample logistic regression. RESULTS: Anaemia prevalence was 57.8%, 57.4%, and 61.1% for women of reproductive age, non-pregnant women, and pregnant women, respectively. The prevalence of severe anaemia was 1.6%, 1.5%, and 2.3% for overall women of reproductive age, non-pregnant women, and pregnant women, correspondingly. The southern regions, rural residence, low education, unemployment, low wealth index, and non-use of modern contraceptives significantly increased the likelihood of anaemia and severe anaemia among women of reproductive age and non-pregnant women. The likelihood of being anaemic was significantly increased by large family size among women of reproductive age and by being underweight among non-pregnant women. The South-East region, rural residence, low education, and unemployment were significantly associated with anaemia among pregnant women. The South-South region and unemployment increased the likelihood of severe anaemia among pregnant women. Short stature significantly reduced the odds of being anaemic and severely anaemic among pregnant women. CONCLUSIONS: Anaemia prevalence among all categories of women of reproductive age is high in Nigeria. Predictors of anaemia prevalence and severity should be considered in policies intended to reduce anaemia among women of reproductive age in Nigeria.

Objective: The effect of indoor air pollution from different fuel types on the anemia status among non-pregnant women is rarely studied. This study aimed to assess the link between indoor air pollution from different fuel types and anemia among non-pregnant women of reproductive ages in Ethiopia. Method: The secondary data from the 2016 Ethiopian Demographic and Health Survey data have been employed for this study. The anemia status of women in reproductive age was the outcome variable with multiple outcomes as (moderate to severe, mild, and no anemia) and households using biomass fuel and clean fuel were selected for this study. Multinomial logistic regression was employed to estimate the association of biomass fuel use with the anemia status controlling for the predictor variables. Relative risk ratio was calculated at 95% confidence interval. An independent-sample t-test was used to assess the mean difference in blood hemoglobin level (g/dL) between the two fuel users. A p value < 0.05 was considered significant. Result: From the total of 10,961 participants included in this study, the proportion of anemia in women of non-reproductive age was 41.8% and 19.4% among biomass fuel and clean fuel users, respectively, with a mean blood hemoglobin level of 12.71 (±1.81) g/dL. In the final model, women using biomass fuel for cooking were 47% more likely to have mild anemia than households who use cleaner fuels, whereas the association was insignificant for moderate to severe anemia. Biomass fuel users were also found to have 5.8 g/dL lower blood hemoglobin level than the clean fuel user (p < 0.001). Conclusion: The use of biomass fuel was associated with reduced blood hemoglobin levels and significantly associated with mild anemia levels in women of reproductive age in Ethiopia. National efforts should be in place to reduce indoor air pollution from biomass fuels.

BACKGROUND: Mannheimia haemolytica causative agent of pneumonic mannheimiosis, a common respiratory disease of goat and sheep, which cause huge economic losses to farmers worldwide. Pneumonic mannheimiosis caused by M. haemolytica serotype A2 has been reported among small ruminants in Malaysia. The lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and outer membrane protein (OMP) are major virulence determinants for M. haemolytica serotype A2. Although pneumonic mannheimiosis is known to cause poor reproductive performance in small ruminants under field conditions, there is a dearth of published information on the specific effects of M. haemolytica serotype A2 infection on the female reproductive physiology. In this experiment, we explored the impact of M. haemolytica serotype A2 and its OMP immunogen on selected pro-inflammatory cytokines, acute phase proteins, female reproductive hormones, and cellular changes in visceral and female reproductive organs of non-pregnant does. METHODOLOGY: Twelve healthy, non-pregnant, Boer crossbreds does were divided equally into three groups (n = 4); Group 1 served as the negative control and was challenged with 2 ml of sterile PBS intranasally. Group 2 served as the positive control and was challenged with 2 ml of 109 colonies forming unit (CFU) of M. haemolytica serotype A2 suspension intranasally. Group 3 was challenged with 2 ml of OMP extracted from 109 CFU of M. haemolytica A2 intramuscularly. The experimental does were monitored for clinical signs and responses periodically. Blood samples were collected at 0, 1, 2, 4, 6, 12 and 24 h and 3, 7, 21, 35 and 56 days post treatment for serological analyses. All does were euthanised using the halal slaughter method on day 60 post challenge/treatment. Tissues from the uterus, liver, lung and associated bronchial lymph nodes were collected and fixed in 10% formalin for 14 days for histopathological study. RESULTS: Compared to the control group, the challenged/treated groups showed significant (p < 0.05) increase in the rectal temperature, respiratory rate, heart rate, and rumen motility. Serum analyses revealed that the concentrations of progesterone and estrogen hormones were significantly (p < 0.05) decreased in groups 2 & 3. In contrast, the concentrations of pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1ß and IL-6) and acute phase proteins (Hp and SAA) were significantly increased (p < 0.05) in the challenged/treated groups compared to the control group. Histopathological lesion scoring revealed mild to moderate cellular changes characterised by congestion, haemorrhage, degeneration, leucocytic cellular infiltration, and cellular necrosis in the tissues of does from the OMP treatment and bacterial challenge groups compared to the control group. CONCLUSION: The findings from this study suggests that M. haemolytica serotype A2 and its OMP immunogen induced mild to moderate inflammatory and degenerative changes which may potentially interfere with fertilization through hormonal imbalances and cause temporary loss of fertility in infected does.
