RESUMEN

Bitumen, aggregate, and air void (VA) are the three primary ingredients of asphalt concrete. VA changes over time as a function of four factors: traffic loads and repetitions, environmental regimes, compaction, and asphalt mix composition. Due to the high as-constructed VA content of the material, it is expected that VA will reduce over time, causing rutting during initial traffic periods. Eventually, the material will undergo shear flow when it reaches its densest state with optimum aggregate interlock or refusal VA content. Therefore, to ensure the quality of construction, VA in asphalt mixture need to be modeled throughout the service life. This study aims to implement a hybrid evolutionary polynomial regression (EPR) combined with a teaching-learning based optimization (TLBO) algorithm and multi-gene genetic programming (MGGP) to predict the VA percentage of asphalt mixture during the service life. For this purpose, 324 data records of VA were collected from the literature. The variables selected as inputs were original as-constructed VA, VA orig (%); mean annual air temperature, MAAT (°F); original viscosity at 77 °F, η o r i g , 77 (Mega-Poises); and time (months). EPR-TLBO was found to be superior to MGGP and existing empirical models due to the interquartile ranges of absolute error boxes equal to 0.67%. EPR-TLBO had an R2 value of more than 0.90 in both the training and testing phases, and only less than 20% of the records were predicted utilizing this model with more than 20% deviation from the observed values. As determined by the sensitivity analysis, η o r i g , 77 is the most significant of the four input variables, while time is the least one. A parametric study showed that regardless of MAAT , η o r i g , 77 , of 0.3 Mega-Poises, and VA orig above 6% can be ideal for improving the pavement service life. It was also witnessed that with an increase of MAAT from 37 to 75 °F, the serviceability of asphalt concrete takes 15 months less on average.

RESUMEN

Computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems play a vital role in modern research by effectively minimizing both time and costs. These systems support healthcare professionals like radiologists in their decision-making process by efficiently detecting abnormalities as well as offering accurate and dependable information. These systems heavily depend on the efficient selection of features to accurately categorize high-dimensional biological data. These features can subsequently assist in the diagnosis of related medical conditions. The task of identifying patterns in biomedical data can be quite challenging due to the presence of numerous irrelevant or redundant features. Therefore, it is crucial to propose and then utilize a feature selection (FS) process in order to eliminate these features. The primary goal of FS approaches is to improve the accuracy of classification by eliminating features that are irrelevant or less informative. The FS phase plays a critical role in attaining optimal results in machine learning (ML)-driven CAD systems. The effectiveness of ML models can be significantly enhanced by incorporating efficient features during the training phase. This empirical study presents a methodology for the classification of biomedical data using the FS technique. The proposed approach incorporates three soft computing-based optimization algorithms, namely Teaching Learning-Based Optimization (TLBO), Elephant Herding Optimization (EHO), and a proposed hybrid algorithm of these two. These algorithms were previously employed; however, their effectiveness in addressing FS issues in predicting human diseases has not been investigated. The following evaluation focuses on the categorization of benign and malignant tumours using the publicly available Wisconsin Diagnostic Breast Cancer (WDBC) benchmark dataset. The five-fold cross-validation technique is employed to mitigate the risk of over-fitting. The evaluation of the proposed approach's proficiency is determined based on several metrics, including sensitivity, specificity, precision, accuracy, area under the receiver-operating characteristic curve (AUC), and F1-score. The best value of accuracy computed through the suggested approach is 97.96%. The proposed clinical decision support system demonstrates a highly favourable classification performance outcome, making it a valuable tool for medical practitioners to utilize as a secondary opinion and reducing the overburden of expert medical practitioners.

RESUMEN

How to reduce a boiler's NOx emission concentration is an urgent problem for thermal power plants. Therefore, in this paper, we combine an evolution teaching-learning-based optimization algorithm with extreme learning machine to optimize a boiler's combustion parameters for reducing NOx emission concentration. Evolution teaching-learning-based optimization algorithm (ETLBO) is a variant of conventional teaching-learning-based optimization algorithm, which uses a chaotic mapping function to initialize individuals' positions and employs the idea of genetic evolution into the learner phase. To verify the effectiveness of ETLBO, 20 IEEE congress on Evolutionary Computation benchmark test functions are applied to test its convergence speed and convergence accuracy. Experimental results reveal that ETLBO shows the best convergence accuracy on most functions compared to other state-of-the-art optimization algorithms. In addition, the ETLBO is used to reduce boilers' NOx emissions by optimizing combustion parameters, such as coal supply amount and the air valve. Result shows that ETLBO is well-suited to solve the boiler combustion optimization problem.

RESUMEN

This study introduces ETLBOCBL-CNN, an automated approach for optimizing convolutional neural network (CNN) architectures to address classification tasks of varying complexities. ETLBOCBL-CNN employs an effective encoding scheme to optimize network and learning hyperparameters, enabling the discovery of innovative CNN structures. To enhance the search process, it incorporates a competency-based learning concept inspired by mixed-ability classrooms during the teacher phase. This categorizes learners into competency-based groups, guiding each learner's search process by utilizing the knowledge of the predominant peers, the teacher solution, and the population mean. This approach fosters diversity within the population and promotes the discovery of innovative network architectures. During the learner phase, ETLBOCBL-CNN integrates a stochastic peer interaction scheme that encourages collaborative learning among learners, enhancing the optimization of CNN architectures. To preserve valuable network information and promote long-term population quality improvement, ETLBOCBL-CNN introduces a tri-criterion selection scheme that considers fitness, diversity, and learners' improvement rates. The performance of ETLBOCBL-CNN is evaluated on nine different image datasets and compared to state-of-the-art methods. Notably, ELTLBOCBL-CNN achieves outstanding accuracies on various datasets, including MNIST (99.72%), MNIST-RD (96.67%), MNIST-RB (98.28%), MNIST-BI (97.22%), MNST-RD + BI (83.45%), Rectangles (99.99%), Rectangles-I (97.41%), Convex (98.35%), and MNIST-Fashion (93.70%). These results highlight the remarkable classification accuracy of ETLBOCBL-CNN, underscoring its potential for advancing smart device infrastructure development.

RESUMEN

The reptile search algorithm (RSA) is a bionic algorithm proposed by Abualigah. et al. in 2020. RSA simulates the whole process of crocodiles encircling and catching prey. Specifically, the encircling stage includes high walking and belly walking, and the hunting stage includes hunting coordination and cooperation. However, in the middle and later stages of the iteration, most search agents will move towards the optimal solution. However, if the optimal solution falls into local optimum, the population will fall into stagnation. Therefore, RSA cannot converge when solving complex problems. To enable RSA to solve more problems, this paper proposes a multi-hunting coordination strategy by combining Lagrange interpolation and teaching-learning-based optimization (TLBO) algorithm's student stage. Multi-hunting cooperation strategy will make multiple search agents coordinate with each other. Compared with the hunting cooperation strategy in the original RSA, the multi-hunting cooperation strategy has been greatly improved RSA's global capability. Moreover, considering RSA's weak ability to jump out of the local optimum in the middle and later stages, this paper adds the Lens pposition-based learning (LOBL) and restart strategy. Based on the above strategy, a modified reptile search algorithm with a multi-hunting coordination strategy (MRSA) is proposed. To verify the above strategies' effectiveness for RSA, 23 benchmark and CEC2020 functions were used to test MRSA's performance. In addition, MRSA's solutions to six engineering problems reflected MRSA's engineering applicability. It can be seen from the experiment that MRSA has better performance in solving test functions and engineering problems.

RESUMEN

Marine Predators Algorithm (MPA) is a newly nature-inspired meta-heuristic algorithm, which is proposed based on the Lévy flight and Brownian motion of ocean predators. Since the MPA was proposed, it has been successfully applied in many fields. However, it includes several shortcomings, such as falling into local optimum easily and precocious convergence. To balance the exploitation and exploration ability of MPA, a modified marine predators algorithm hybridized with teaching-learning mechanism is proposed in this paper, namely MTLMPA. Compared with MPA, the proposed MTLMPA has two highlights. Firstly, a kind of teaching mechanism is introduced in the first phase of MPA to improve the global searching ability. Secondly, a novel learning mechanism is introduced in the third phase of MPA to enhance the chance encounter rate between predator and prey and to avoid premature convergence. MTLMPA is verified by 23 benchmark numerical testing functions and 29 CEC-2017 testing functions. Experimental results reveal that the MTLMPA is more competitive compared with several state-of-the-art heuristic optimization algorithms.

RESUMEN

This research paper develops a novel hybrid approach, called hybrid particle swarm optimization-teaching-learning-based optimization (hPSO-TLBO), by combining two metaheuristic algorithms to solve optimization problems. The main idea in hPSO-TLBO design is to integrate the exploitation ability of PSO with the exploration ability of TLBO. The meaning of "exploitation capabilities of PSO" is the ability of PSO to manage local search with the aim of obtaining possible better solutions near the obtained solutions and promising areas of the problem-solving space. Also, "exploration abilities of TLBO" means the ability of TLBO to manage the global search with the aim of preventing the algorithm from getting stuck in inappropriate local optima. hPSO-TLBO design methodology is such that in the first step, the teacher phase in TLBO is combined with the speed equation in PSO. Then, in the second step, the learning phase of TLBO is improved based on each student learning from a selected better student that has a better value for the objective function against the corresponding student. The algorithm is presented in detail, accompanied by a comprehensive mathematical model. A group of benchmarks is used to evaluate the effectiveness of hPSO-TLBO, covering various types such as unimodal, high-dimensional multimodal, and fixed-dimensional multimodal. In addition, CEC 2017 benchmark problems are also utilized for evaluation purposes. The optimization results clearly demonstrate that hPSO-TLBO performs remarkably well in addressing the benchmark functions. It exhibits a remarkable ability to explore and exploit the search space while maintaining a balanced approach throughout the optimization process. Furthermore, a comparative analysis is conducted to evaluate the performance of hPSO-TLBO against twelve widely recognized metaheuristic algorithms. The evaluation of the experimental findings illustrates that hPSO-TLBO consistently outperforms the competing algorithms across various benchmark functions, showcasing its superior performance. The successful deployment of hPSO-TLBO in addressing four engineering challenges highlights its effectiveness in tackling real-world applications.

RESUMEN

An XYZ compliant micropositioner has been widely mentioned in precision engineering, but the displacements in the X, Y, and Z directions are often not the same. In this study, a design and optimization for a new XYZ micropositioner are developed to obtain three same displacements in three axes. The proposed micropositioner is a planar mechanism whose advantage is a generation of three motions with only two actuators. In the design strategy, the proposed micropositioner is designed by a combination of a symmetrical four-lever displacement amplifier, a symmetrical parallel guiding mechanism, and a symmetrical parallel redirection mechanism. The Z-shaped hinges are used to gain motion in the Z-axis displacement. Four flexure right-circular hinges are combined with two rigid joints and two flexure leaf hinges to permit two large X-and-Y displacements. The symmetrical four-lever displacement amplifier is designed to increase the micropositioner's travel. The displacement sensor is built by embedding the strain gauges on the hinges of the micropositioner, which is developed to measure the travel of the micropositioner. The behaviors and performances of the micropositioner are modeled by using the Taguchi-based response surface methodology. Additionally, the geometrical factors of the XYZ micropositioner are optimized by teaching-learning-based optimization. The optimized design parameters are defined with an A of 0.9 mm, a B of 0.8 mm, a C of 0.57 mm, and a D of 0.7 mm. The safety factor gains 1.85, while the displacement achieves 515.7278 µm. The developed micropositioner is a potential option for biomedical sample testing in a nanoindentation system.

RESUMEN

The main objective of this paper is to present an improved neural network algorithm (INNA) for solving the reliability-redundancy allocation problem (RRAP) with nonlinear resource constraints. In this RRAP, both the component reliability and the redundancy allocation are to be considered simultaneously. Neural network algorithm (NNA) is one of the newest and efficient swarm optimization algorithms having a strong global search ability that is very adequate in solving different kinds of complex optimization problems. Despite its efficiency, NNA experiences poor exploitation, which causes slow convergence and also restricts its practical application of solving optimization problems. Considering this deficiency and to obtain a better balance between exploration and exploitation, searching procedure for NNA is reconstructed by implementing a new logarithmic spiral search operator and the searching strategy of the learner phase of teaching-learning-based optimization (TLBO) and an improved NNA has been developed in this paper. To demonstrate the performance of INNA, it is evaluated against seven well-known reliability optimization problems and finally compared with other existing meta-heuristics algorithms. Additionally, the INNA results are statistically investigated with the Wilcoxon sign-rank test and Multiple comparison test to show the significance of the results. Experimental results reveal that the proposed algorithm is highly competitive and performs better than previously developed algorithms in the literature.

RESUMEN

Nitinol-shape memory alloys (SMAs) are widely preferred for applications of automobile, biomedical, aerospace, robotics, and other industrial area. Therefore, precise machining of Nitinol SMA plays a vital role in achieving better surface roughness, higher productivity and geometrical accuracy for the manufacturing of devices. Wire electric discharge machining (WEDM) has proven to be an appropriate technique for machining nitinol shape memory alloy (SMA). The present study investigated the influence of near-dry WEDM technique to reduce the environmental impact from wet WEDM. A parametric optimization was carried out with the consideration of design variables of current, pulse-on-time (Ton), and pulse-off-time (Toff) and their effect were studied on output characteristics of material removal rate (MRR), and surface roughness (SR) for near-dry WEDM of nitinol SMA. ANOVA was carried out for MRR, and SR using statistical analysis to investigate the impact of design variables on response measures. ANOVA results depicted the significance of the developed quadratic model for both MRR and SR. Current, and Ton were found to be major contributors on the response value of MRR, and SR, respectively. A teaching-learning-based optimization (TLBO) algorithm was employed to find the optimal combination of process parameters. Single-response optimization has yielded a maximum MRR of 1.114 mm3/s at Ton of 95 µs, Toff of 9 µs, current of 6 A. Least SR was obtained at Ton of 35 µs, Toff of 27 µs, current of 2 A with a predicted value of 2.81 µm. Near-dry WEDM process yielded an 8.94% reduction in MRR in comparison with wet-WEDM, while the performance of SR has been substantially improved by 41.56%. As per the obtained results from SEM micrographs, low viscosity, reduced thermal energy at IEG, and improved flushing of eroded material for air-mist mixture during NDWEDM has provided better surface morphology over the wet-WEDM process in terms of reduction in surface defects and better surface quality of nitinol SMA. Thus, for obtaining the better surface quality with reduced surface defects, near-dry WEDM process is largely suitable.

RESUMEN

Shape memory alloy (SMA), particularly those having a nickel-titanium combination, can memorize and regain original shape after heating. The superior properties of these alloys, such as better corrosion resistance, inherent shape memory effect, better wear resistance, and adequate superelasticity, as well as biocompatibility, make them a preferable alloy to be used in automotive, aerospace, actuators, robotics, medical, and many other engineering fields. Precise machining of such materials requires inputs of intellectual machining approaches, such as wire electrical discharge machining (WEDM). Machining capabilities of the process can further be enhanced by the addition of Al2O3 nanopowder in the dielectric fluid. Selected input machining process parameters include the following: pulse-on time (Ton), pulse-off time (Toff), and Al2O3 nanopowder concentration. Surface roughness (SR), material removal rate (MRR), and recast layer thickness (RLT) were identified as the response variables. In this study, Taguchi's three levels L9 approach was used to conduct experimental trials. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) technique was implemented to reaffirm the significance and adequacy of the regression model. Al2O3 nanopowder was found to have the highest contributing effect of 76.13% contribution, Ton was found to be the highest contributing factor for SR and RLT having 91.88% and 88.3% contribution, respectively. Single-objective optimization analysis generated the lowest MRR value of 0.3228 g/min (at Ton of 90 µs, Toff of 5 µs, and powder concentration of 2 g/L), the lowest SR value of 3.13 µm, and the lowest RLT value of 10.24 (both responses at Ton of 30 µs, Toff of 25 µs, and powder concentration of 2 g/L). A specific multi-objective Teaching-Learning-Based Optimization (TLBO) algorithm was implemented to generate optimal points which highlight the non-dominant feasible solutions. The least error between predicted and actual values suggests the effectiveness of both the regression model and the TLBO algorithms. Confirmatory trials have shown an extremely close relation which shows the suitability of both the regression model and the TLBO algorithm for the machining of the nanopowder-mixed WEDM process for Nitinol SMA. A considerable reduction in surface defects owing to the addition of Al2O3 powder was observed in surface morphology analysis.

RESUMEN

Computer based imaging and analysis techniques are frequently used for the diagnosis and treatment of retinal diseases. Although retinal images are of high resolution, the contrast of the retinal blood vessels is usually very close to the background of the retinal image. The detection of the retinal blood vessels with low contrast or with contrast close to the background of the retinal image is too difficult. Therefore, improving algorithms which can successfully distinguish retinal blood vessels from the retinal image has become an important area of research. In this work, clustering based heuristic artificial bee colony, particle swarm optimization, differential evolution, teaching learning based optimization, grey wolf optimization, firefly and harmony search algorithms were applied for accurate segmentation of retinal vessels and their performances were compared in terms of convergence speed, mean squared error, standard deviation, sensitivity, specificity. accuracy and precision. From the simulation results it is seen that the performance of the algorithms in terms of convergence speed and mean squared error is close to each other. It is observed from the statistical analyses that the algorithms show stable behavior and also the vessel and the background pixels of the retinal image can successfully be clustered by the heuristic algorithms.

RESUMEN

As stated by World Health Organization (WHO) report, 246 million individuals have suffered with diabetes disease over worldwide and it is anticipated that by 2025 this estimation can cross 380 million. So, the proper and quick diagnosis of this disease is turned into a significant challenge for the machine learning researchers. This paper aims to design a robust model for diagnosis of diabetes using a hybrid approach of Chaotic-Jaya (CJaya) algorithm with Extreme Learning Machine (ELM), which is named as CJaya-ELM. In this paper, Jaya algorithm with Chaotic learning approach is used to optimize the random parameters of ELM classifier. Here, to assess the efficacy of the designed model, Pima Indian diabetes dataset is considered. Here, the designed model CJaya-ELM, has been compared with basic ELM, Teaching Learning Based Optimization algorithm (TLBO) optimized ELM (TLBO-ELM), Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP), Jaya algorithm optimized MLP (Jaya-MLP), TLBO algorithm optimized MLP (TLBO-MLP) and CJaya algorithm optimized MLP models. CJaya-ELM model resulted in the highest testing accuracy of 0.9687, sensitivity of 1, specificity of 0.9688 with 0.9782 area under curve (AUC) value. RESUMEN

In this study, the PMUs are placed to operate in normal and islanded cases taking into account power system observability, reliability, Communication Infrastructure (CI), and latency time associated with this CI. Moreover, the economic study for additional new data transmission paths is considered as well as the preexisting Communication Devices (CDs) and the availability of predefined locations of some PMUs in some buses. The PMUs placement and their communication network topology and link channel capacity are co-optimized simultaneously. Two different approaches are applied to optimize the objective function; the first approach is combined from Binary Teaching Learning Based Optimization Algorithm (BTLBOA) and the Minimum Spanning Tree (MST) algorithm, while the second approach is based on BTLBOA. The proposed approaches are examined using IEEE 118-bus systems.

RESUMEN

Accurate medical disease diagnosis is considered to be an important classification problem. The main goal of the classification process is to determine the class to which a certain pattern belongs. In this article, a new classification technique based on a combination of The Teaching Learning-Based Optimization (TLBO) algorithm and Fuzzy Wavelet Neural Network (FWNN) with Functional Link Neural Network (FLNN) is proposed. In addition, the TLBO algorithm is utilized for training the new hybrid Functional Fuzzy Wavelet Neural Network (FFWNN) and optimizing the learning parameters, which are weights, dilation and translation. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, five standard medical datasets were used: Breast Cancer, Heart Disease, Hepatitis, Pima-Indian diabetes and Appendicitis. The efficiency of the proposed method is evaluated using 5-fold cross-validation and 10-fold cross-validation in terms of mean square error (MSE), classification accuracy, running time, sensitivity, specificity and kappa. The experimental results show that the efficiency of the proposed method for the medical classification problems is 98.309%, 91.1%, 91.39%, 88.67% and 93.51% for the Breast Cancer, Heart Disease, Hepatitis, Pima-Indian diabetes and Appendicitis datasets, respectively, in terms of accuracy after 30 runs for each dataset with low computational complexity. In addition, it has been observed that the proposed method has efficient performance compared with the performance of other methods found in the related previous studies.

RESUMEN

The main objective of this paper is to compensate power factor using teaching learning based optimization (TLBO), determine the capacitor bank optimization (CBO) algorithm, and monitor a system in real-time using cloud data logging (CDL). Implemented Power Factor Compensation and Monitoring System (PFCMS) calculates the optimal capacitor combination to improve power factor of the installation by measure of voltage, current, and active power. CBO algorithm determines the best solution of capacitor values to install, by applying TLBO in different phases of the algorithm. Electrical variables acquired by the sensors and the variables calculated are stored in CDL using Google Sheets (GS) to monitor and analyse the installation by means of a TLBO algorithm implemented in PFCMS, that optimizes the compensation power factor of installation and determining which capacitors are connected in real time. Moreover, the optimization of the power factor in facilities means economic and energy savings, as well as the improvement of the quality of the operation of the installation.

RESUMEN

This paper presents Modified Active Disturbance Rejection Control (MADRC) scheme and a systematic procedure to tune its tuning variables via. observer and controller gains. The problem of tuning is formulated as a constrained multi-objective optimization problem. Depending upon the application appropriate objective functions are chosen, and a unified objective is developed based on weighted sum approach. Five different weight combinations are considered, which result in five objective functions. Each objective function is individually optimized using Teaching-Learning Based Optimization (TLBO), this leads to five sets of tuning variables. Best among five alternatives will be selected based on Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP). The effectiveness of this approach is validated through its application to a power system with load frequency control problems. Different simulation examples involving single-area and multi-area power systems are considered in the presence of sudden load disturbances, model uncertainties, and parameter variations. Further stability analyses are carried out in a standard two-degree of freedom Internal Model Control (IMC) framework.

RESUMEN

Many CpG island detection methods have been proposed based on sliding window and clustering technology, but the accuracy of these methods is proportional to the time required. Therefore, an accurate and rapid method for identifying CpG islands remains an important challenge in the complete human genome. We propose a hybrid method CpGTLBO to detect the CpG islands in the human genome. The method uses the clustering approach and the teaching-learning-based optimization (TLBO) algorithm. The clustering approach is used to detect CpG island candidates, and it can effectively reduce the huge volume of unnecessary DNA fragments. TLBO was used to accurately predict CpG islands among promising CpG island candidates. A comparison based on six contig data sets and a whole human genome analysis showed that the identifying stability of CpGTLBO outperformed eight existing methods in terms of sensitivity (SN), specificity (SP), accuracy (ACC), performance coefficient (PC), and correlation coefficient (CC) and processing time. Results indicated that ClusterTLBO can effectively overcome the drawbacks and maintain the advantages in both the CpGcluster and TLBO.

RESUMEN

Static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) provides the means to improve quality and reliability of a power system as it has the functional capability to handle dynamic disturbances, such as transient stability and power oscillation damping as well as to providing voltage regulation. In this paper, a robust adaptive PI-based optimal fuzzy control strategy is proposed to control a STATCOM used in distribution systems. The proposed intelligent strategy is based on a combination of a new General Type-II Fuzzy Logic (GT2FL) with a simple heuristic algorithm named Teaching Learning Based Optimization (TLBO) Algorithm. The proposed framework optimally tunes parameters of a Proportional-Integral (PI) controller which, similar to most of other researchers regarding control of STATCOM, are in charge of controlling the device. The proposed controller guaranties robustness and stability against uncertainties caused by external disturbances or ever-changing nature of the power systems. The TLBO optimizes the parameters of the controller as well as the input and output membership functions. To validate the efficiency of the proposed controller, the obtained simulation results are compared with those of the two most recent researches applied in this field, namely, conventional Proportional Integral (PI) controller and Optimal Fuzzy PI (OFPI) controller. Results demonstrate the successfulness and effectiveness of the proposed online-TLBO General Type-2 Fuzzy PI (OGT2FPI) controller and its superiority over conventional approaches.

RESUMEN

This paper presents an improved Teaching Learning Based Optimization (TLO) and a methodology for obtaining the edge maps of the noisy real life digital images. TLO is a population based algorithm that simulates the teaching-learning mechanism in class rooms, comprising two phases of teaching and learning. The 'Teaching Phase' represents learning from the teacher and 'Learning Phase' indicates learning by the interaction between learners. This paper introduces a third phase denoted by "Avoiding Phase" that helps to keep the learners away from the worst students with a view of exploring the problem space more effectively and escaping from the sub-optimal solutions. The improved TLO (ITLO) explores the solution space and provides the global best solution. The edge detection problem is formulated as an optimization problem and solved using the ITLO. The results of real life and medical images illustrate the performance of the developed method.
