RESUMEN

Convergence of visual motion and vestibular information is essential for accurate spatial navigation. Such multisensory integration has been shown in cortex, e.g., the dorsal medial superior temporal (MSTd) and ventral intraparietal (VIP) areas, but not in the parieto-insular vestibular cortex (PIVC). Whether similar convergence occurs subcortically remains unknown. Many Purkinje cells in vermal lobules 10 (nodulus) and 9 (uvula) of the macaque cerebellum are tuned to vestibular translation stimuli, yet little is known about their visual motion responsiveness. Here we show the existence of translational optic flow-tuned Purkinje cells, found exclusively in the anterior part of the nodulus and ventral uvula, near the midline. Vestibular responses of Purkinje cells showed a remarkable similarity to those in MSTd (but not PIVC or VIP) neurons, in terms of both response latency and relative contributions of velocity, acceleration, and position components. In contrast, the spatiotemporal properties of optic flow responses differed from those in MSTd, and matched the vestibular properties of these neurons. Compared with MSTd, optic flow responses of Purkinje cells showed smaller velocity contributions and larger visual motion acceleration responses. The remarkable similarity between the nodulus/uvula and MSTd vestibular translation responsiveness suggests a functional coupling between the two areas for vestibular processing of self-motion information.

The aim of the present study was to investigate how normal head and neck epithelial cells (NHNEC) respond to cisplatin compared to their neoplastic counterparts with respect to intracellular platinum (Pt) levels and growth inhibition. A colorimetric assay was used to assess growth inhibition after exposure to cisplatin for 72 h. Growth inhibition did not differ between cultures of neoplastic (n = 5) and normal cells (n = 5). Intracellular Pt levels, determined with atomic absorption spectroscopy were about 30-fold higher in the normal epithelial cells. The main finding of this study is that normal epithelial cells from the head and neck region have a much higher tolerance for cisplatin than their neoplastic counterparts. Interestingly, this characteristic is without consequence for growth inhibition.

A 30-year-old nonatopic woman had experienced a 9-year history of persistent symptoms of supraglottic edema. She had previously undergone epiglottectomy and excision of redundant left arytenoid tissue to improve her breathing and dysphagia. Uvular tissue was removed surgically at our clinic for histopathological examination of the excised tissues. This revealed diffuse infiltration by mast cells, many of which appeared degranulated. Uvular tissue from control patients undergoing uvulopalatopharyngoplasty for obstructive sleep apnea contained significantly fewer mast cells per high power field. To our knowledge such a degree of mast cell infiltration into supraglottic tissues has not been reported previously or associated with clinical symptoms.

A crypto-lymphatic unit was observed at the left lateral aspect of the uvula of a mature female monkey, Macaca fascicularis. A light- and transmission electron-microscopic investigation revealed that the lumen of the crypt was filled with bacteria, desquamated epithelial cells, lymphocytes and neutrophils. The non-keratinized stratified squamous epithelium of the crypt was fragmented and showed heavy mononuclear cell infiltration and surface discontinuities, exposing lymphoid cells to foreign material. The lymphatic parenchyma consisted of organized lymphatic tissue including germinal centres. The resident cell population included lymphocytes of varying size, blastforming B- and T-lymphocytes and two types of reticular cells resembling the fibroblastic reticulum cell and the follicular dendritic cell, respectively. Occasionally granulocytes were encountered. At its base and laterally the crypto-lymphatic unit was ensheathed by a thin connective tissue capsule. Three other monkeys of the same species failed to reveal similar structures at the same site.
