Objective: To study the relationship between hemoglobin glycation index (HGI) and blood lipid indices such as low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (non-HDL-C), and plasma atherogenic index (AIP). Methods: This cross-sectional study included 16 049 participants from the Beijing Apple Garden community between December 2011 and August 2012. The subjects were divided into three groups based on the HGI quartile: low (n=5 388), medium (n=5 249), and high (n=5 412). The differences in blood lipid indicators between different HGI groups were compared and multivariate logistic regression model was established to analyze the association between HGI and dyslipidemia. And multivariate logistic regression model was established to analyze the relationship between HGI and blood lipid indicators in different glucose metabolism populations. Results: There were 16 049 participants in all (mean age: 56 years), including 10 452 women (65.1%). They were classified into normal glucose tolerance (9 093 cases), prediabetes (4 524 cases), and diabetes (2 432 cases) based on glucose tolerance status. In the general population, with the increase of HGI, LDL-C, non-HDL-C, and AIP gradually increased (all P values for trends were <0.05), and the proportion of abnormalities increased significantly (χ2=101.40, 42.91, 39.80; all P<0.001). A multivariate logistic regression model was established, which suggested a significant correlation between HGI and LDL-C, non-HDL-C, and AIP (all P<0.05), after adjusting for factors such as age, sex, fasting blood glucose, hypertension, body mass index, smoking, and alcohol consumption. In the overall population, normal glucose tolerance group, and diabetes group, HGI had the highest correlation with non-HDL-C (OR values of 1.325, 1.678, and 1.274, respectively); in the prediabetes group, HGI had a higher correlation with LDL-C (OR value: 1.510); and in different glucose metabolism groups, AIP and HGI were both correlated (OR: 1.208-1.250), but not superior to non-HDL-C and LDL-C. Conclusion: HGI was closely related to LDL-C, non HDL-C, and AIP in the entire population and people with different glucose metabolism, suggesting that HGI may be a predictor of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.

BACKGROUND: Dysregulation of vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) function leads to a variety of diseases such as atherosclerosis and hyperplasia after injury. However, antiproliferative drug targeting VSMC exhibits poor specificity. Therefore, there is an urgent to develop highly specific antiproliferative drugs to prevention and treatment VSMC dedifferentiation associated arteriosclerosis. Kanglexin (KLX), a new anthraquinone compound designed by our team, has potential to regulate VSMC phenotype according to the physicochemical properties. PURPOSE: This project aims to evaluate the therapeutic role of KLX in VSMC dedifferentiation and atherosclerosis, neointimal formation and illustrates the underlying molecular mechanism. METHODS: In vivo, the ApoE-/- mice were fed with high-fat diet (HFD) for a duration of 13 weeks to establish the atherosclerotic model. And rat carotid artery injury model was performed to establish the neointimal formation model. In vitro, PDGF-BB was used to induce VSMC dedifferentiation. RESULTS: We found that KLX ameliorated the atherosclerotic progression including atherosclerotic lesion formation, lipid deposition and collagen deposition in aorta and aortic sinus in atherosclerotic mouse model. In addition, The administration of KLX effectively ameliorated neointimal formation in the carotid artery following balloon injury in SD rats. The findings derived from molecular docking and surface plasmon resonance (SPR) experiments unequivocally demonstrate that KLX had potential to bind PDGFR-ß. Mechanism research work proved that KLX prevented VSMC proliferation, migration and dedifferentiation via activating the PDGFR-ß-MEK -ERK-ELK-1/KLF4 signaling pathway. CONCLUSION: Collectively, we demonstrated that KLX effectively attenuated the progression of atherosclerosis in ApoE-/- mice and carotid arterial neointimal formation in SD rats by inhibiting VSMC phenotypic conversion via PDGFR-ß-MEK-ERK-ELK-1/KLF4 signaling. KLX exhibits promising potential as a viable therapeutic agent for the treatment of VSMC phenotype conversion associated arteriosclerosis.

Cardiovascular diseases, particularly those involving arterial stenosis and smooth muscle cell proliferation, pose significant health risks. This study aimed to investigate the therapeutic potential of curcumol in inhibiting platelet-derived growth factor-BB (PDGF-BB)-induced human aortic smooth muscle cell (HASMC) proliferation, migration and autophagy. Using cell viability assays, 5-ethynyl-2'-deoxyuridine (EdU) incorporation assays and Western Blot analyses, we observed that curcumol effectively attenuated PDGF-BB-induced HASMC proliferation and migration in a concentration-dependent manner. Furthermore, curcumol mitigated PDGF-BB-induced autophagy, as evidenced by the downregulation of LC3-II/LC3-I ratio and upregulation of P62. In vivo experiments using an arteriosclerosis obliterans model demonstrated that curcumol treatment significantly ameliorated arterial morphology and reduced stenosis. Additionally, curcumol inhibited the activity of the KLF5/COX2 axis, a key pathway in vascular diseases. These findings suggest that curcumol has the potential to serve as a multi-target therapeutic agent for vascular diseases.

The irruption of lipoprotein(a) (Lp(a)) in the study of cardiovascular risk factors is perhaps, together with the discovery and use of proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (iPCSK9) inhibitor drugs, the greatest novelty in the field for decades. Lp(a) concentration (especially very high levels) has an undeniable association with certain cardiovascular complications, such as atherosclerotic vascular disease (AVD) and aortic stenosis. However, there are several current limitations to both establishing epidemiological associations and specific pharmacological treatment. Firstly, the measurement of Lp(a) is highly dependent on the test used, mainly because of the characteristics of the molecule. Secondly, Lp(a) concentration is more than 80% genetically determined, so that, unlike other cardiovascular risk factors, it cannot be regulated by lifestyle changes. Finally, although there are many promising clinical trials with specific drugs to reduce Lp(a), currently only iPCSK9 (limited for use because of its cost) significantly reduces Lp(a). However, and in line with other scientific societies, the SEA considers that, with the aim of increasing knowledge about the contribution of Lp(a) to cardiovascular risk, it is relevant to produce a document containing the current status of the subject, recommendations for the control of global cardiovascular risk in people with elevated Lp(a) and recommendations on the therapeutic approach to patients with elevated Lp(a).

Diabetes causes arteriosclerosis, primarily due to persistent hyperglycemia, subsequently leading to various cardiovascular events. No method has been established for directly detecting and evaluating arteriosclerotic lesions from blood samples of diabetic patients, as the mechanism of arteriosclerotic lesion formation, which involves complex molecular biological processes, has not been elucidated. "NMR modal analysis" is a technology that enables visualization of specific nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) signal properties of blood samples. We hypothesized that this technique could be used to identify changes in blood status associated with the progression of arteriosclerotic lesions in the context of diabetes. The study aimed to assess the possibility of early detection and evaluation of arteriosclerotic lesions by NMR modal analysis of serum samples from diabetes model mice. Diabetes model mice (BKS.Cg db/db) were bred in a clean room and fed a normal diet. Blood samples were collected and centrifuged. Carotid arteries were collected for histological examination by hematoxylin and eosin staining on weeks 10, 14, 18, 22, and 26. The serum was separated and subjected to NMR modal analysis and biochemical examination. Mice typically show hyperglycemia at an early stage (8 weeks old), and pathological findings of a previous study showed that more than half of mice had atheromatous plaques at 18 weeks old, and severe arteriosclerotic lesions were observed in almost all mice after 22 weeks. Partial least squares regression analysis was performed, which showed that the mice were clearly classified into two groups with positive and negative score values within 18 weeks of age. The findings of this study revealed that NMR modal properties of serum are associated with arteriosclerotic lesions. Thus, it may be worth exploring the possibility that the risk of cardiovascular events in diabetic patients could be assessed using serum samples.

BACKGROUND: The cardiometabolic index (CMI) is a new metric derived from the triglyceride-glucose index and body mass index and is considered a potential marker for cardiovascular risk assessment. This study aimed to examine the correlation between the CMI and the presence and severity of arteriosclerosis in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). METHODS: This study involved 2243 patients with T2DM. The CMI was derived by dividing the triglyceride level (mmol/L) by the high-density lipoprotein level (mmol/L) and then multiplying the quotient by the waist-to-height ratio. Multivariate logistic regression was used to analyze the correlations between the CMI and BMI blood biomarkers, blood pressure, and brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV). RESULTS: Patients were categorized into three groups based on their CMI: Group C1 (CMI < 0.775; n = 750), Group C2 (CMI: 0.775-1.355; n = 743), and Group C3 (CMI > 1.355; n = 750). Increased BMI, fasting glucose, insulin (at 120 min), total cholesterol (TC), and baPWV values were observed in Groups C2 and C3, with statistically significant trends (all trends P < 0.05). The CMI was positively correlated with systolic blood pressure (r = 0.74, P < 0.001). Multivariate analysis revealed that an increased CMI contributed to a greater risk for arteriosclerosis (OR = 1.87, 95%CI: 1.66-2.10, P < 0.001). Compared to the C1 group, the C2 group and C3 group had a greater risk of developing arteriosclerosis, with ORs of 4.55 (95%CI: 3.57-5.81, P<0.001) and 5.56 (95%CI: 4.32-7.17, P<0.001), respectively. The association was notably stronger in patients with a BMI below 21.62 kg/m² than in those with a BMI of 21.62 kg/m² or higher (OR = 4.53 vs. OR = 1.59). CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that the CMI is a relevant and independent marker of arteriosclerosis in patients with T2DM and may be useful in the risk stratification and management of these patients.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Anastomotic leakage is one of the most common and serious postoperative complications following esophagectomy. This study analyzed the effect of risk factors, such as the degree of arteriosclerosis, comorbidities, and patient characteristics on the incidence of reconstruction-related complications including anastomotic leakage. Furthermore, the usefulness of tailor-made reconstruction methods was clarified using wide gastric conduit. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients who underwent esophagectomy with a gastric conduit for esophageal cancer between 2011 and 2018 were enrolled. In the initial group that underwent esophagectomy between August 2011 and February 2016, gastrointestinal reconstruction was performed using a narrow gastric conduit. In the latter group, reconstruction using subtotal gastric conduit was selected for high-risk patients between March 2016 and March 2018. Postoperative complications including reconstruction-related complications were assessed. RESULTS: The occurrence of anastomotic leakage was significantly associated with the patient's risk in the initial group. The rates of anastomotic leakage and reconstruction-related complications were significantly lower in the latter group than in the initial group (3.2% vs. 23.0%, p=0.001; 27.0% vs. 44.3%, p=0.044). The incidence of all complications was significantly lower in the latter group than in the initial group (28.6% vs. 59.0%, p=0.001). The change in bodyweight loss one year after the operation was significantly lower in the latter group than in the initial group (p=0.042). CONCLUSION: Tailor-made reconstruction using wide gastric conduit for high-risk cases of esophageal cancer could reduce the occurrence of anastomotic leakage and promote a better quality of life after surgery.

Ferroptosis plays an important role in inflammation and oxidative stress. Whether ferroptosis is involved in the inflammation of vascular endothelial cells and its regulation mechanism remains unclear. We estimated the correlation between serum iron ion levels and the inflammation index of 33 patients with arteriosclerosis. In vitro, HUVECs with or without ferrostatin-1 were exposed to Lipopolysaccharide. Corresponding cell models to verify the target signaling pathway. The results showed that serum iron ion levels had a significant positive correlation with N ratio, N/L, LDL level, and LDL/HDL (P < 0.05), and a negative correlation with L ratio (P < 0.05) in the arteriosclerosis patients. In vitro, ferroptosis is involved in HUVECs inflammation. Ferrostatin-1 can rescue LPS-induced HUVECs inflammation by decreasing HMGB1/IL-6/TNF-α expression. Nrf2 high expression could protect HUVECs against ferroptosis by activating the GPX4/GSH system, inhibiting ferritinophagy, and alleviating inflammation in HUVECs by inhibiting HMGB1/IL-6/TNF-α expression. It also found that Nrf2 is a key adaptive regulatory factor in the oxidative damage of HUVECs induced by NOX4 activation. These findings indicated that ferroptosis contributed to the pathogenesis of vascular endothelial cell damage by mediating endothelial cell inflammation. Nrf2-mediated redox balance in vascular inflammation may be a therapeutic strategy in vascular diseases.

BACKGROUND: Dementia is a multifactorial disease, with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and vascular pathology often co-occurring in many individuals with dementia. Yet, the interplay between AD and vascular pathology in cognitive decline is largely undetermined. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to examine the joint effect of arteriosclerosis and AD pathology on cognition in the general population without dementia. METHODS: We determined the interaction between blood-based AD biomarkers and CT-defined arteriosclerosis on cognition in 2,229 dementia-free participants of the population-based Rotterdam Study (mean age: 68.9 years, 52% women) cross-sectionally. RESULTS: Amyloid-ß (Aß)42 and arterial calcification were associated with cognitive performance. After further adjustment for confounders in a model that combined all biomarkers, only arterial calcification remained independently associated with cognition. There was a significant interaction between arterial calcification and Aß42 and between arterial calcification and the ratio of Aß42/40. Yet, estimates attenuated, and interactions were no longer statistically significant after adjustment for cardio metabolic risk factors. CONCLUSIONS: Arteriosclerosis and AD display additive interaction-effects on cognition in the general population, that are due in part to cardio metabolic risk factors. These findings suggest that joint assessment of arteriosclerosis and AD pathology is important for understanding of disease etiology in individuals with cognitive impairment.

Schimke immuno-osseous dysplasia (SIOD) is a rare multi-system condition caused by biallelic loss-of-function mutations in the SMARCAL1 gene. This disorder is characterized by disproportionate growth failure, T-cell deficiency, and renal dysfunction. Pathogenic variants in the SMARCAL1 gene have been reported in only approximately half of SIOD-affected individuals. Among these alterations, nonsense and frameshift mutations generally lead to a severe phenotype with early onset. In this study, we identified novel mutations in an Iranian patient with SIOD. A 4-year-old girl with developmental delay and facial dysmorphism was referred to our center for molecular diagnosis. We applied whole-exome and Sanger sequencing for co-segregation analysis. Subsequently, bioinformatic analysis was performed to assess the pathogenic effects of the variants and their post-transcriptional effects. We discovered two novel mutations (c.2281delT and c.2283delA) in exon 15 of the SMARCAL1 gene, resulting in a truncated protein with a loss of 193 amino acids (p.S761Rfs*1). Variant effect predictors indicated that these variants are pathogenic, and multi-sequence alignments revealed high conservation of this region among different species. Given that our patient exhibited severe a phenotype and passed away soon after receiving a definitive molecular diagnosis, we propose that the loss of the helicase C-terminal domain in the deleted part of SMARCAL1 may lead to the severe form of SIOD. Besides, the combination of growth retardation and bone abnormalities also plays a crucial role in the early diagnosis of the disease.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the impact of the severity of cervical ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) on the incidence of arteriosclerosis in the carotid artery. METHODS: Patients with OPLL-induced cervical myelopathy were prospectively enrolled. The study involved analyzing patient characteristics, blood samples, computed tomography scans of the spine, and intima-media thickness (IMT) measurements of the common carotid artery. Patients were divided into two groups based on the size of the cervical OPLL to compare demographic data, comorbidities, and the presence of thickening of the carotid intima-media (max IMT ≥ 1.1 mm). RESULTS: The study included 96 patients (mean age: 63.5 years; mean body mass index: 26.9 kg/m2; 71.8% male; 35.4% with diabetes mellitus). The mean maximum anteroposterior (AP) diameter of the OPLL was 4.9 mm, with a mean occupancy ratio of 43%. The mean maximum IMT was 1.23 mm. Arteriosclerosis of the carotid artery was diagnosed in 62.5% of the patients. On comparing the two groups based on OPLL size, the group with larger OPLL (≥ 5 mm) had a higher BMI and a greater prevalence of carotid intima-media thickening. This significant difference in the prevalence of carotid intima-media thickening persisted even after adjusting for patient backgrounds using propensity score matching. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with a larger cervical OPLL showed a higher frequency of intima-media thickening in the carotid artery.

The objective of this study was to establish an animal model of arteriosclerosis for assessing vasospasm and to investigate the relationship between arteriosclerosis and vasospasm. Twelve-week-old male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed a diet supplemented with adenine and vitamin D (adenine/vitD). Body weight, blood, and femoral artery histopathology were assessed at 2, 4, and 6 weeks. Change in the femoral artery was examined by transmission electron microscope (TEM). Vasospasm was induced by administering epinephrine extravascularly into the femoral artery and released by the treatment with lidocaine as a vasodilator. During this period, the extravascular diameter and blood flow were measured. The rats in the adenine/vitD group developed renal dysfunction, uremia, hyperphosphatemia, and elevated serum alkaline phosphatase. Histological and TEM analyses of the femoral arteries in the treated rats revealed the degeneration of elastic fibers and extensive calcification of the tunica media and intima. Vascular smooth muscles were degenerated and osteoblasts were developed, resulting in calcified arteriosclerosis. Vasospasm in arteriosclerotic arteries was detected; however, vasodilation as well as an increase in the blood flow was not observed. This study revealed the development of vasospasm in the femoral arteries of the arteriosclerotic rats and, a conventional vasodilator did not release the vasospasm.

Musclin, a myokine, undergoes modulation during exercise and has demonstrated anti-inflammatory effects in cardiomyocytes and glomeruli. However, its role in atherosclerotic responses remains unclear. This study aimed to explore the impact of musclin on inflammatory responses and the interaction between endothelial cells and monocytes under hyperlipidemic conditions. The attachment levels of THP-1 monocytes on cultured HUVECs were examined. Inflammation and the expression of cell adhesion molecules were also evaluated. To explore the molecular mechanisms of musclin, PPARα or heme oxygenase 1 (HO-1) siRNA transfection was performed in HUVECs. The results revealed that treatment with recombinant musclin effectively suppressed the attachment of palmitate-induced HUVECs to THP-1 cells and reduced the expression of cell adhesion proteins (ICAM-1, VCAM-1, and E-selectin) in HUVECs. Furthermore, musclin treatment ameliorated the expression of inflammation markers (phosphorylated NFκB and IκB) in both HUVECs and THP-1 monocytes, as well as the release of TNFα and MCP-1 from HUVECs and THP-1 monocytes. Notably, musclin treatment augmented the expression levels of PPARα and HO-1. However, when PPARα or HO-1 siRNA was employed, the beneficial effects of musclin on inflammation, cell attachment, and adhesion molecule expression were abolished. These findings indicate that musclin exerts anti-inflammatory effects via the PPARα/HO-1 pathway, thereby mitigating the interaction between endothelial cells and monocytes. This study provides evidence supporting the important role of musclin in ameliorating obesity-related arteriosclerosis and highlights its potential as a therapeutic agent for treating arteriosclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes is a chronic disease that can lead to a variety of complications and even cause death. The signal characteristics of the photoplethysmography signals (PPG) and electrocardiogram signals (ECG) can reflect the autonomic and vascular aspects of the effects of diabetes on the body. OBJECTIVE: Based on the complex mechanism of interaction between PPG and ECG, a set of ensemble empirical mode decomposition-independent component analysis (EEMD-ICA) fusion multi-scale percussion entropy index (MSPEI) method was proposed to analyze cardiovascular function in diabetic patients. METHODS: Firstly, the original signal was decomposed into multiple Intrinsic Mode Function (IMFs) by ensemble empirical mode decomposition EEMD, principal components of IMF were extracted by independent component analysis (ICA), then the extracted principal components were reconstructed to eliminate the complex high and low frequency noise of physiological signals. In addition, the MSPEI was calculated for the ECG R-R interval and PPG amplitude sequence.(RRI and Amp) The results showed that, compared with EEMD method, the SNR of EEMD-ICA method increases from 2.1551 to 11.3642, and the root mean square error (RMSE) decreases from 0.0556 to 0.0067. This algorithm can improve the performance of denoising and retain more feature information. The large and small scale entropy of MSPEI (RRI,Amp) was significantly different between healthy and diabetic patients (p< 0.01). RESULTS: Compared with arteriosclerosis index (AI) and multi-scale cross-approximate entropy (MCAE): MSPEISS (RRI,Amp) indicated that diabetes can affect the activity of human autonomic nervous system, while MSPEILS (RRI,Amp) indicated that diabetes can cause or worsen arteriosclerosis. CONCLUSION: Multi-scale Percussion Entropy algorithm has more advantages in analyzing the influence of diabetes on human cardiovascular and autonomic nervous function.

BACKGROUND: The latest demographics, clinical and living conditions, and comorbidities of patients with thromboangiitis obliterans (TAO) in Japan are unknown.Methods and Results: We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional survey using the annual database of the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare medical support system for patients with TAO between April 2013 and March 2014. This study included 3,220 patients (87.6% male), with current age ≥60 years in 2,155 patients (66.9%), including 306 (9.5%) patients aged ≥80 years. Overall, 546 (17.0%) had undergone extremity amputation. The median interval from onset to amputation was 3 years. Compared with never smokers (n=400), 2,715 patients with a smoking history had a higher amputation rate (17.7% vs. 13.0%, P=0.02, odds ratio [OR]=1.437, 95% confidence interval [CI]=1.058-1.953). A lower proportion of workers and students was seen among patients after amputation than among amputation-free patients (37.9% vs. 53.0%, P<0.0001, OR=0.542, 95% CI=0.449-0.654). Comorbidities, including arteriosclerosis-related diseases, were found even in patients in their 20-30 s. CONCLUSIONS: This large survey confirmed that TAO is not a life-threatening but an extremity-threatening disease that threatens patients' professional lives. Smoking history worsens patients' condition and extremity prognosis. Long-term total health support is required, including care of extremities and arteriosclerosis-related diseases, social life support, and smoking cessation.

BACKGROUND: Apolipoprotein E ε4 allele (APOE-ε4) is the main genetic risk factor for late-onset Alzheimer's disease (AD) and may impact cognitive function also via other neuropathological lesions. However, there is limited evidence available from diverse populations, as APOE associations with dementia seem to differ by race. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the pathways linking APOE-ε4 to cognitive abilities through AD and non-AD neuropathology in an autopsy study with an admixed sample. METHODS: Neuropathological lesions were evaluated following international criteria using immunohistochemistry. Participants were classified into APOE-ε4 carriers (at least one ε4 allele) and non-carriers. Cognitive abilities were evaluated by the Clinical Dementia Rating Scale sum of boxes. Mediation analyses were conducted to assess the indirect association of APOE-ε4 with cognition through AD-pathology, lacunar infarcts, hyaline arteriosclerosis, cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA), Lewy body disease (LBD), and TAR DNA-binding protein 43 (TDP-43). RESULTS: We included 648 participants (mean age 75 ± 12 years old, mean education 4.4 ± 3.7 years, 52% women, 69% White, and 28% APOE-ε4 carriers). The association between APOE-ε4 and cognitive abilities was mediated by neurofibrillary tangles (ß = 0.88, 95% CI = 0.45; 1.38, p < 0.001) and neuritic plaques (ß = 1.36, 95% CI = 0.86; 1.96, p < 0.001). Lacunar infarcts, hyaline arteriosclerosis, CAA, LBD, and TDP-43 were not mediators in the pathway from APOE-ε4 to cognition. CONCLUSION: The association between APOE-ε4 and cognitive abilities was partially mediated by AD-pathology. On the other hand, cerebrovascular lesions and other neurodegenerative diseases did not mediate the association between APOE-ε4 and cognition.

OBJECTIVES: Vascular stiffening is highly predictive of major adverse cardiovascular events. It is not clear whether microangiopathy, such as fundus arteriosclerosis, is related to carotid atherosclerosis. Hence, this study was designed to investigate the relationship between carotid atherosclerosis and fundus arteriosclerosis among individuals of different sexes in the Chinese health-examination population. METHODS: This retrospective cross-sectional study involved 20,836 participants, including 13050 males and 7786 females. All participants underwent a detailed health examination, including medical history assessment, physical examination, assessment of lifestyle factors, fundus photography, Doppler ultrasound examination of the neck, and laboratory examinations. Two trained ophthalmologists analysed fundus arteriosclerosis based on fundus photographs, while carotid atherosclerosis was diagnosed using colour Doppler sonography of the neck. Binary logistic regression was used to analyse the relationship between carotid atherosclerosis and fundus arteriosclerosis. RESULTS: In participants with fundus arteriosclerosis, the incidence of carotid atherosclerosis was higher than that of participants without fundus arteriosclerosis (52.94% vs. 47.06%). After adjustments for potential confounding factors, fundus arteriosclerosis was significantly associated with the risk of carotid atherosclerosis. The OR with 95% CI for fundus arteriosclerosis was 1.17 (1.02, 1.34) with p = 0.0262, and individuals who did not have fundus arteriosclerosis were used as a reference in the total population. Fundus arteriosclerosis was associated with the incidence of carotid atherosclerosis in males (p = 0.0005) but not in females (p = 0.0746). CONCLUSIONS: Fundus arteriosclerosis was closely associated with carotid atherosclerosis in the Chinese population. This association was found in males but not in females.
