RESUMEN

The naked mole-rat (Heterocephalus glaber) is a unique model mammal in which to study socially induced inhibition of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis. Naked mole-rat groups exhibit a high degree of reproductive bias in which breeding is restricted to one female (the queen) and one male, with subordinate non-breeding colony members rarely, if ever, having the opportunity to reproduce due to a dysfunctional HPG axis. It is posited that aggression directed at subordinates by the queen suppresses reproduction in these subordinates, yet the underlying physiological mechanisms causing this dysfunction are unknown. This study aimed to investigate the possible factors contributing to the dysfunction of the HPG axis in subordinate female naked mole-rats with a specific focus on the role of ovarian feedback and stress-related factors such as circulating glucocorticoid and endogenous opioid peptides. The results showed that stress-related factors appear to not mediate the suppression of reproductive function in subordinate female naked mole rats. Indeed, in some cases, the activation of the stress axis may lead to reproductive activation instead of deactivation. At the same time, the role of ovarian sex steroid feedback in reproductive suppression is likely limited and not clearly delineated. This study highlights the need for detailed studies to elucidate the mechanism of reproductive suppression in this unique model mammalian species which may shed light on, and reveal novel mechanisms, in the social regulation of reproduction.

RESUMEN

Social stress is a negative emotional experience that can increase fear and anxiety. Dominance status can alter the way individuals react to and cope with stressful events. The underlying neurobiology of how social dominance produces stress resistance remains elusive, although experience-dependent changes in androgen receptor (AR) expression is thought to play an essential role. Using a Syrian hamster (Mesocricetus auratus) model, we investigated whether dominant individuals activate more AR-expressing neurons in the posterior dorsal and posterior ventral regions of the medial amygdala (MePD, MePV), and display less social anxiety-like behavior following social defeat stress compared to subordinate counterparts. We allowed male hamsters to form and maintain a dyadic dominance relationship for 12 days, exposed them to social defeat stress, and then tested their approach-avoidance behavior using a social avoidance test. During social defeat stress, dominant subjects showed a longer latency to submit and greater c-Fos expression in AR+ cells in the MePD/MePV compared to subordinates. We found that social defeat exposure reduced the amount of time animals spent interacting with a novel conspecific 24 h later, although there was no effect of dominance status. The amount of social vigilance shown by dominants during social avoidance testing was positively correlated with c-Fos expression in AR+ cells in the MePV. These findings indicate that dominant hamsters show greater neural activity in AR+ cells in the MePV during social defeat compared to their subordinate counterparts, and this pattern of neural activity correlates with their proactive coping response. Consistent with the central role of androgens in experience-dependent changes in aggression, activation of AR+ cells in the MePD/MePV contributes to experience-dependent changes in stress-related behavior.

RESUMEN

Many animals use formalized signals to communicate dominance relationships. In some primates, such as macaques, the function of such signals varies with dominance style. Despotic species produce unidirectional submission signals that have a dual function: in conflict contexts, they signal a willingness to withdraw, whereas in peaceful contexts, they indicate the agreement to subordination. More despotic species produce these calls to a lesser extent than less despotic species. Here, we investigated whether the use of unidirectional submission signals is also related to dominance style in two lemur species and whether signalling subordination stabilizes social relationships at the group level. Ring-tailed lemurs (Lemur catta) exhibit a more despotic dominance hierarchy than Verreaux's sifakas (Propithecus verreauxi). We observed social interactions in 75 dyads of Verreaux's sifakas and 118 dyads of ring-tailed lemurs. Both species used unidirectional submissive calls that have a dual function, potentially suggesting convergent evolution of the function of these signals in independent primate lineages. However, signalling subordination did not stabilize social relationships at the group level in both species. Additionally, subordination occurred more frequently in dyads of the more despotic ring-tailed lemurs than in Verreaux's sifakas, indicating opposite patterns to macaques in the coevolution of social traits with dominance style. This article is part of the theme issue 'The power of sound: unravelling how acoustic communication shapes group dynamics'.

RESUMEN

This study addresses the relation between subjectivity and contemporary enslaved labor from the enslaved workers' narratives in Brazil. A qualitative social research was carried out based on a constructionist perspective. We sought interaction with rescued workers and used (a) participant observation of workers' routine in an institutional project that supports them and a field diary, (b) semi-structured and open individual interviews with workers and a member of the team project. The fieldwork lasted a year and a half and the analysis followed Content Analysis. Freudian theory and Foucault's thought were used for interpretation, which managed to understand aspects of workers' experiences, exploitation characteristics, parental abandonment, as well as the tensions in self-classification as enslaved. The narratives pointed to a dramatic reality manifested in body exploitation, authoritarian abuses, violence, and negligence. At the same time, these narratives showed forms of worker resistance that calls for further investigations to increase knowledge on the subjective experiences of those who were enslaved.(AU)

Dominance relationships are identified by changes in agonistic behavior toward specific individuals. While there are considerable individual and species differences in dominance relationships, sex differences are poorly understood in rodent models because aggression among female rodents is rare. The aim of this study was to characterize sex differences in the formation and maintenance of dominance relationships in same-sex pairs of male and female Syrian hamsters. We pooled data from multiple projects in our lab to evaluate dominance interactions in 68 male dyads and 88 female dyads. In each project, animals were matched with a partner similar in age, sex, and estrous cycle and we exposed animals to daily social encounters for two weeks in a resident-intruder format. We found that female hamsters were quicker to attack and attacked at higher rates compared to males regardless of dominance status. In addition, resident female hamsters were quicker to attack and attacked at higher rates than intruder females, but aggression in males did not depend on residency status. Female subordinates were quicker to submit and fled at higher rates from their dominant counterparts compared to male subordinates. Intruder subordinate females were quicker to submit and fled at higher rates than resident subordinate females. Females were also more resistant than males to becoming subordinate in that they fought back more consistently and were more likely to reverse their dominance status. These findings indicate that dominance relationships are less stable in females compared to males and that residency status has a larger impact on agonistic behavior in females than males. Overall, differences in how males and females display territorial aggression can lead to sex differences in the establishment and maintenance of dominance relationships.

ABSTRACT: Stuttering in One's Own Language: Anti-identitarian Anthropophagy as a Disruption of Epistemic Domination. This article aimed to articulate the inherent dialectics of self-constitution through encounters with the other, employing the concepts of narcissistic wounds and oceanic feeling. Subsequently, a case problem is presented, which questions the limits of identity construction for subalternized subjects marked by the colonial discourse. The colonial discourse operates through a hierarchical ontological distribution, promoting a division between 'us' and 'them,' presupposing the fundamental attribute of lack for the colonized. This ontological distribution relies on the presupposition of a hierarchy of knowledge and discourses that both repress the production of knowledge and sign systems of the dominated and mythify those of the dominators. The case at hand highlights internal colonialism in its dual determination: being and knowledge, prompting scrutiny of identification processes between autophagy and anthropophagy. It also raises questions about how it is possible to articulate a resistant discourse that is not compromised by dominant powers.

Understanding the conflict resolution strategies used by adolescents in their relationship with their parents is fundamental to understanding how their healthy development occurs. This article investigated the resolution of conflicts by adolescents in confrontation situations between their personal domain and parental control. A total of 36 adolescents, aged 15 to 17 years, divided equally according to sex, answered a semi-structured interview that contained four hypothetical conflict situations. Data were subjected to semantic content analysis and non-parametric tests. The results were categorized into seven strategies: Assumption of Guilt, Submission, Lie, Hostility, Dialogue/Explanation, Negotiation, and Other. The predominant form of resolution used was Dialogue/Explanation, considered a recurrent form of defense of the personal domain. Differences were found depending on the participants' gender and the hypothetical situation. Finally, the results are discussed regarding the degree of autonomy and type of defense of the personal domain.(AU)

This article addresses the contributions of Critical Theory as a specific way to investigate and promote training in critical information literacy. Some implications are presented when the Critical Theory model is transposed to the study of information processes and, in particular, the meaning that this theory can have in the development of critical information literacy is delimited. From the methodological point of view, it is based on the contributions of Horkheimer and other authors of this line of thought, to show, from different perspectives, why critical information literacy should be considered by Information Science professionals. The need to acquire critical informational competence is defended to oppose the positivist or scientific attitude and recognizes the contradictions inherent to its own object. The analysis of the case of obstetric violence, an example of null or deficient critical information literacy, shows how the broad and complex performance of institutional and cultural racism, its form of organization and development, through structures, practices, norms, processes and institutional policies, generates interpersonal behaviors and, in a subtle way, naturalizes the inequalities produced in the care of parturients. As a preventive measure, the training in critical information literacy of all professional groups that care for puerperal women is proposed, a task that Information Science professionals should assume, in addition to extending their area of teaching and research to those of medical specialization. like obstetrics(AU)

RESUMEN

This study examined the content published by the newspaper Folha de São Paulo regarding domestic violence before and after Law 11340/06, commonly known as Maria da Penha Law, came into force. A retrospective and comparative documentary research analyzed 3408 news reports published between 1994 and 2018. Divided into two corpora, '12 years before' and '12 years after' the Law, the material was analyzed using the IRaMuTeQ software and Descending Hierarchical Classification. The first corpus included news reports on cases involving celebrities and little about ordinary people. It also covered the feminist struggle to reduce domestic violence, focusing on specialized police stations and shelters. The second corpus included reports on the achievements generated by the Law and its challenges, pointing out the need to regard the law as more than a punitive instrument, addressing its preventive and care spheres. Problematizing how the media discloses such law is paramount, since the content divulged affects the construction of social representations.(AU)

Abstract As globalization accelerated after 1492, often in the service of European imperial expansion, human destruction of the habitat in which animals could express their natural behaviors also increased. Within this context, the question arises: just how much are we like other animals, and if they are like us, how much do we owe them? From the 1500s to the 1800s, travelers, imperialists, the colonized, and intellectuals tried to answer this question and produced three positions: animals as mere exploitable devices; confusion about animals' status and what we owe them, and concern about the suffering of nonhuman animals, their freedom to express their behaviors, and their very existence.

Psychopathy is a personality disorder associated with criminal behavior and violent recidivism, and therefore a burden to society. Social dominance is one of the characteristics of psychopathy that might contribute to these problems. Nevertheless, only few studies have objectively measured the relationship between socially dominant behavior and psychopathy. Therefore, the current study assessed performance of 21 forensic PCL-R confirmed psychopathic patients and 24 normal controls on a gaze aversion task, in which slower gaze aversion from masked angry faces compared to masked happy faces is a measure of reactive dominance. Moreover, the current study assessed the potential beneficial effects of the neuropeptide oxytocin. The results showed that psychopaths were not more dominant on the gaze aversion task compared to normal controls. However, the severity of psychopathy was positively correlated with reactive dominance. Crucially, a single nasal spray administration of oxytocin abolished the connection between psychopathy and reactive dominance. This implies that socially dominant psychopaths might benefit from oxytocin administration.

RESUMEN

Social experience can generate neural plasticity that changes how individuals respond to stress. Winning aggressive encounters alters how animals respond to future challenges and leads to increased plasma testosterone concentrations and androgen receptor (AR) expression in the social behavior neural network. In this project, our aim was to identify neuroendocrine mechanisms that account for changes in stress-related behavior following the establishment of dominance relationships over a two-week period. We used a Syrian hamster model in which acute social defeat stress increases anxiety-like responses in a conditioned defeat test in males and in a social avoidance test in females. First, we administered flutamide, an AR antagonist, via intraperitoneal injections daily during the establishment of dominance relationships in male hamsters. We found that pharmacological blockade of AR prevented a reduction in conditioned defeat in dominant males and blocked an upregulation of AR in the posterior dorsal medial amygdala (MePD) and posterior ventral medial amygdala (MePV), but not in the ventral lateral septum. Next, we administered flutamide into the posterior aspects of the medial amygdala (MeP) prior to acute social defeat stress or prior to conditioned defeat testing in males. We found that pharmacological blockade of AR in the MeP prior to social defeat, but not prior to testing, increased the conditioned defeat response in dominant males and did not alter behavior in subordinates. Finally, we developed a procedure to establish dominance relationships in female hamsters and investigated status-dependent changes in plasma steroid hormone concentrations, estrogen receptor alpha (ERα) immunoreactivity, and defeat-induced social avoidance. We found that dominant female hamsters showed reduced social avoidance regardless of social defeat exposure as well as increased ERα expression in the MePD, but no status-dependent changes in the concentration of plasma steroid hormones. Overall, these findings suggest that achieving and maintaining stable social dominance leads to sex-specific neural plasticity in the MeP that underlies status-dependent changes in stress vulnerability.

RESUMEN

In most group-living animals, a dominance hierarchy reduces the costs of competition for limited resources. Dominance ranks may reflect prior attributes, such as body size, related to fighting ability or reflect the history of self-reinforcing effects of winning and losing a conflict (the winner-loser effect), or both. As to prior attributes, in sexually dimorphic species, where males are larger than females, males are assumed to be dominant over females. As to the winner-loser effect, the computational model DomWorld has shown that despite the female's lower initial fighting ability, females achieve some degree of dominance of females over males. In the model, this degree of female dominance increases with the proportion of males in a group. This increase was supposed to emerge from the higher fraction of fights of males among themselves. These correlations were confirmed in despotic macaques, vervet monkeys, and in humans. Here, we first investigate this hypothesis in DomWorld and next in long-term data of 9,300 observation hours on six wild groups of robust capuchin monkeys (Sapajus libidinosus; S. nigritus, and S. xanthosternos) in three Brazilian sites. We test whether both the proportion of males and degree of female dominance over males are indeed associated with a higher relative frequency of aggression among males and a higher relative frequency of aggression of females to males. We confirm these correlations in DomWorld. Next, we confirm in empirical data of capuchin monkeys that with the proportion of males in the group there is indeed an increase in female dominance over males, and in the relative frequency of both male-male aggression and aggression of females to males and that the female dominance index is significantly positively associated with male male aggression. Our results reveal that adult sex ratio influences the power relation between the sexes beyond predictions from socioecological models.

RESUMEN

We studied the social hierarchy in zebrafish and assessed differences in neurotransmitters and behavior in the F1 generation offspring of dominant and subordinate zebrafish (Danio rerio). We used behavioral assays to study locomotion, ability to complete cognitive tasks, social interaction and aggression. To study the neurochemical changes, we applied quantitative polymerase chain reaction, high pressure liquid chromatography and immunohistochemistry. Social hierarchies were formed both by males and females when animals were kept in same sex pairs in the dyadic dominant-subordinate hierarchy test. The offspring of dominant animals were the leaders in social interactions, however aggression in the mirror-test was not altered in any group. Serotonin and noradrenaline levels were lower in the F1 generation subordinate animals when compared with dominant animals, but not compared with animals that were naïve to social hierarchy. The mRNA level of the rate-limiting enzyme in histamine synthesis, histidine decarboxylase, was significantly lower in dominant and subordinate larval zebrafish when compared with control animals. In the dominant adult zebrafish tyrosine hydroxylase 1 mRNA level was lower compared with control animals, whereas tyrosine hydroxylase 2 mRNA was not different. The result was verified with immunohistochemistry. There were gender specific differences between the dominant and subordinate animals, where the dominant females performed better in cognitive tasks such as the T-maze than subordinate females. This was not observed in males, as the behavior of the dominant and subordinate males did not differ. These results add to the understanding of the plastic nature of the central nervous system and show that neurochemical features in aminergic neurotransmitter systems are associated with social leadership and dominance.

RESUMEN

Gender studies have largely described social practices that lead to an imbalance of power between girls and boys during childhood. However, little is known about how children represent asymmetries in mixed-gender relationships. Do they expect that males are more likely to exert power on females than vice versa? And if so, does this awareness change depending on children's age, gender, or the country in which they grow up? We present herein an empirical study, recently published in Sex Roles, that addresses these issues. This study included 3- to 6-year-old children, and showed that children from different countries (Norway, Lebanon, France) associate power and masculinity, although it also indicates that girls are less inclined than boys to make this association. We then discuss the worries that children's beliefs of a gendered power may elicit.
