RESUMEN

PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: Without externally validated tools to assess teaching and learning curriculum (TLC) programs, our program has undertaken continuous quality improvement (CQI) methods to make revisions in response to resident, programmatic, and accreditation demands. QUALITY IMPROVEMENT METHODS: Key stakeholders, including the college of pharmacy, the residents, and the executive committee, were engaged in discussion and feedback was solicited. RESULTS OF CQI INQUIRY: The demands identified prompted revision of the TLC teaching component, programming, and timeline. Major changes have included adding an application for the teaching track, limiting teaching track participation, altering the seminar format (to a mix of in person, virtual, and asynchronous), and starting the program earlier in the calendar year. Key stakeholders supported the proposed revisions. INTERPRETATION AND DISCUSSION: The CQI method summarized here worked well for the TLC. Although simplistic in nature, it met the needs of the TLC and engaged several stakeholders. No major challenges were encountered during the process and stakeholders were amenable to the process and proposed revisions. Given the lack of externally validated tools for assessing TLC programs, any TLC program could perform a similar CQI method to assist with revisions. CONCLUSION: Continuous quality improvement of the TLC to address resident, programmatic, and accreditation demands has been vital to optimize and sustain the program. Assessment will be ongoing as future revisions are made.

INTRODUCTION: The pharmacy profession faces a lack of evidence pertaining to pharmaceutical care in oncology, both in terms of its effectiveness and its integration into clinical practice. While Europe-based pharmacists are active in many therapeutic areas, their role in cancer care is less defined. Conversely, the complexity of oncology, increasing cancer cases, and evolving therapies highlight the potential for pharmacists in this field. Their limited involvement in Europe may be attributed to inadequate undergraduate training and research. PERSPECTIVE: Collaborative care shows potential in oncology, but still needs more trial evidence. Here, we can learn from pharmaceutical care in cardiology, where more research has been conducted. The limited role of pharmacists in oncology may be due to a lack of focus on oncology research and insufficient education. IMPLICATIONS: Addressing the teaching gap requires improving oncology education in pharmacy programs, at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Current postgraduate courses and US PharmD programs could serve as models. Equipping pharmacy students with fundamental oncology knowledge is a vital first step, for further meaningful research and practice. Formal education could bridge the gap between evidence and practice in these fields.

INTRODUCTION: Promoting diversity among faculty, administrators, and librarians in schools and colleges of pharmacy (SCOP) would be beneficial for the recruitment and retention of students from diverse backgrounds. Graduating such diverse pharmacists could assist in reducing healthcare disparities. Promoting diversity requires a climate that is inclusive of people from all backgrounds. The goal of this study was to examine the working environment of historically marginalized faculty, administrators, and librarians within pharmacy education. METHODS: An electronic survey was administered to all faculty, administrators, and librarians listed in the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy roster. RESULTS: Responses from 339 participants were analyzed. Twenty-seven percent of these participants either observed or personally experienced misconduct during the previous five years. When action was taken, it resulted in the cessation of the misconduct only 38% of the time. Respondents most frequently identified the following as ways to make it easier to address misconduct: support from supervisors, support from peers, and education on how to address misconduct. CONCLUSIONS: Exclusionary, intimidating, offensive, and/or hostile communication/behaviors towards historically marginalized faculty, administrators, and librarians do exist in SCOP. The academy should work towards promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in SCOP through education and provide administrative and peer support for reporting and managing professional misconduct.

INTRODUCTION: In the last decade, significant changes in pharmaceutical sciences have influenced the delivery of pharmacy education in Pharmacy programs. Integrated curriculum is one such method considered. We aimed to describe the perceived level of integrated curriculum among PharmD programs in the US. METHODS: From October 26th, 2021, until January 18th, 2022, faculty administrators across 138 US pharmacy colleges were surveyed. Data was collected regarding each program's perceived curriculum integration and assessment integration. Characteristics of each college, including region and the type of school (public/private), were obtained from the PharmCAS website. Programs were categorized into high-integration and low-integration groups for analysis purposes. Descriptive and comparative analysis by the level of curriculum integration was performed. RESULTS: Overall, 60 colleges completed surveys (participation rate = 43.48%). Most schools were from the South region (38.33%) and public colleges (53.33%). The average perceived curriculum integration was 45% (SD = 23.69), while the average perceived assessment integration was 36% (SD = 25.52). Pharmacy practice [clinical sciences] (76.67%) was the most common discipline considered for integration, and the social and administrative sciences (21.67%) was the discipline least commonly considered for integration. Case-based learning (95%) was the most common pedagogy strategy to integrate knowledge from different disciplines. CONCLUSIONS: Integrated curriculum implementation in the US PharmD programs varied across colleges. While most programs integrated their clinical practice courses, social and administrative sciences was the course least commonly integrated. Very limited progress in assessment integration was perceived.

Graduating student pharmacists who are practice-ready is an essential responsibility of pharmacy programs and heavily emphasized by Accreditation Council of Pharmacy Education (ACPE), pharmacy education's accrediting body. Although several studies have examined students' readiness to engage in advanced pharmacy practice experiences (APPE), few studies examine graduating students' readiness to practice. The objective of this study was to examine national trends in graduating pharmacy students' and preceptors' perceptions of students' pharmacy practice preparedness across a six-year time frame (2016-2021) and trends in graduating students' overall impressions of their program and the pharmacy profession across the same time period. A longitudinal descriptive study to examine trends in graduating student and preceptor perception was conducted utilizing data from the 2016-2021 American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) Graduating Student Surveys (GSS) (n = 65,461) and Preceptor Surveys (PS) (n = 41,951). Over six years of survey data analyzed, a large percentage of students at both public and private institutions reported they felt prepared for practice (96.5% vs 95.5% respectively, p < 0.001). There was overall agreement (>90%) among preceptors that graduating students were prepared to enter pharmacy practice based on responses, although preceptors had lower levels of agreement compared to students on most statements. Based on the findings, both graduating pharmacy students and preceptors feel that graduates are prepared to practice pharmacy, with consistent trends in perceptions over the last six years. However, results also indicate that a consistent downward trend in students' willingness to pursue pharmacy again, indicating decreased optimism of graduating students for the profession.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The 1 + X certificate system, introduced in China in 2019, integrates academic credentials with vocational skill certificates to meet the heightened demand for skilled talents in the growing economy. This study aims to innovate and evaluate the vocational pharmaceutical education system under the 1 + X certificate framework, specifically addressing the gap between theoretical education and workplace requirements. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective observational approach analyzed 490 pharmacy students over two academic years. The 2021 cohort underwent 1 + X integrated education, while the 2020 cohort followed conventional education. We collaborated closely with industry partners to identify and compile typical job competencies, formulating work projects aligned with industry demands. Combining the skill level standards and assessment content of "1+X Pharmaceutical Purchasing and Sales" and "1+X Pharmaceutical Preparation", we revised the course standards, incorporating typical work projects into the 2021 pharmacy professional teaching curriculum. This constituted the fundamental content of the 1 + X education reform. Statistical analysis compared course scores and 1 + X certificate examination performance. RESULTS: The 2021 cohort, under the 1 + X educational model, demonstrated higher average scores in pharmacy courses, with significant improvements in pharmacology (1 + X vs. Traditional education: 58.40 ± 14.20 vs. 53.44 ± 14.67), clinical pharmacotherapy (72.74 ± 10.28 vs. 63.15 ± 11.03), and pharmaceutical distribution and marketing (79.34 ± 10.96 vs. 67.50 ± 15.82). 1 + X certificate pass rates and satisfaction with the model were also higher than the 2020 cohort. CONCLUSION: The 1 + X certificate system is useful for developing talent in Chinese vocational education, effectively integrating assessments with industry standards. Future research should aim at evaluating long-term outcomes and improving quantitative skills assessments for enhanced effectiveness.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the impact of a pharmacy student delivered presentation on prospective rural high school students' interest toward the pharmacy profession and knowledge regarding a career in pharmacy. METHODS: Presentations about applying to pharmacy school, the Doctor of Pharmacy degree, and pharmacist careers were given at ten high schools across North Dakota and Minnesota by third year pharmacy students attending North Dakota State University. Each pharmacy student presenter received training to ensure that all high school students received clear and consistent information. A pre-post survey was used to understand the impact of the presentation on high school student interest and knowledge regarding a career in pharmacy. Data was analyzed using a chi-square test and McNemar's test. RESULTS: Five hundred and eight students consented to the study and completed the pre-post surveys. Of these students, the largest group was high school juniors (number (n) = 239, 47%), followed by sophomores (n = 161, 32%), seniors (n = 104, 20%) and freshmen (n = 3, 1%). The majority of students attended school in North Dakota (n = 469, 92%). Similarly, most students planned to attend a four-year college (n = 451, 89%) and were interested in a medical/healthcare related career (n = 310, 61%). All interest and knowledge questions showed a statistically significant increase in score pre-post. CONCLUSION: Presentations delivered by pharmacy students to prospective rural high school students improved overall interest and knowledge regarding pharmacy school and the profession. Presentations are a useful tool for pharmacy programs to help promote their school and the profession of pharmacy.

BACKGROUND: The objective of this review was to characterize the methods of delivery and assessment of Choose Your Own Adventure (CYOA)-style activities in pharmacy education. A secondary objective was to utilize available data to determine best practices for educators interested in developing similar activities. METHODS: A meta-narrative approach according to the guidance of the RAMESES standards was used for this review. A broad literature search was conducted using PubMed and Embase. Studies published on the use of a CYOA-style patient case format in pharmacy education were identified and appraised individually for their relevance. RESULTS: Thirteen studies from the pharmacy education literature were included in the review. Activities were delivered for 25 unique topics, largely in small groups during class via patient simulation or interactive data collection software. Overall, students have a positive perception of CYOA-style activities, with positive results regarding knowledge development and student engagement. The most commonly reported challenge to implementing CYOA-style patient case activities was the up-front time commitment to develop activities. IMPLICATIONS: This review provides a snapshot of the small but expanding body of literature on CYOA-style patient case activities in pharmacy education. CYOA-style activities are recommended for expanded use in pharmacy education as the preponderance of studies that assessed knowledge development showed significant improvement in knowledge after participation in CYOA-style activities. Additionally, students have a positive perception of CYOA-style activities and reported that they were enjoyable, improved their confidence, and helped them learn course material.

Complex generics are generic versions of drug products that generally have complex active ingredients, complex formulations, complex routes of delivery, complex dosage forms, are complex drug-device combination products, or have other characteristics that can make it complex to demonstrate bioequivalence or to develop as generics. These complex products (i.e. complex generics) are an important element of the United States (U.S.) Food and Drug Administration's (FDA's) Generic Drug User Fee Amendments (GDUFA) II Commitment Letter. The Center for Research on Complex Generics (CRCG) was formed by a grant from the FDA to address challenges associated with the development of complex generics. To understand these challenges, the CRCG conducted a "Survey of Scientific Challenges in the Development of Complex Generics". The three main areas of questioning were directed toward which (types of) complex products, which methods of analysis to support a demonstration of bioequivalence, and which educational topics the CRCG should prioritize. The survey was open to the public on a website maintained by the CRCG. Regarding complex products, the top three selections were complex injectables, formulations, and nanomaterials; drug-device combination products; and inhalation and nasal products. Regarding methods of analysis, the top three selections were locally-acting physiologically-based pharmacokinetic modeling; oral absorption models and bioequivalence; and data analytics and machine learning. Regarding educational topics, the top three selections were complex injectables, formulations, and nanomaterials; drug-device combination products; and data analytics, including quantitative methods and modeling & simulation. These survey results will help prioritize the CRCG's initial research and educational initiatives.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused boundless disruptions to every element of life. It has also brought with it lessons from the past that will likely extend into the future as humans continue to interface with the ever-increasing threats of zoonotic diseases. The pandemic has challenged the profession and the Academy to adjust, modify, and adapt. It has also stretched the bounds of what had previously been thought possible within the realms of medicine. As the Academy begins to reach and crest the apex of the epidemic it should be reminded of the many lessons associated with the pandemic and of the constant need to challenge the paradigm of what is possible.

OBJECTIVES: To summarise key contributions of the Pharmaceutical Education and Research with Regulatory Links (PEARRL) project (2016-2020) to the optimisation of existing and the development of new biopharmaceutics tools for evaluating the in vivo performance of oral drug products during the development of new drugs and at the regulatory level. KEY FINDINGS: Optimised biopharmaceutics tools: Based on new clinical data, the composition of biorelevant media for simulating the fed state conditions in the stomach was simplified. Strategies on how to incorporate biorelevant in vitro data of bio-enabling drug products into physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) modelling were proposed. Novel in vitro biopharmaceutics tools: Small-scale two-stage biphasic dissolution and dissolution-permeation setups were developed to facilitate understanding of the supersaturation effects and precipitation risks of orally administered drugs. A porcine fasted state simulated intestinal fluid was developed to improve predictions and interpretation of preclinical results using in vitro dissolution studies. Based on new clinical data, recommendations on the design of in vitro methodologies for evaluating the GI drug transfer process in the fed state were suggested. The optimized design of in vivo studies for investigating food effects: A food effect study protocol in the pig model was established which successfully predicted the food-dependent bioavailability of two model compounds. The effect of simulated infant fed state conditions in healthy adults on the oral absorption of model drugs was evaluated versus the fasted state and the fed state conditions, as defined by regulatory agencies for adults. Using PBPK modelling, the extrapolated fasted and infant fed conditions data appeared to be more useful to describe early drug exposure in infants, while extrapolation of data collected under fed state conditions, as defined by regulators for adults, failed to capture in vivo infant drug absorption. SUMMARY: Substantial progress has been made in developing an advanced suite of biopharmaceutics tools for streamlining drug formulation screening and supporting regulatory applications. These advances in biopharmaceutics were achieved through networking opportunities and research collaborations provided under the H2020 funded PEARRL project.

The importance of research ethics (RE) training has led academic and funding institutions to require that students, trainees, and faculty obtain such training at various stages of their careers. Despite the increasing awareness of the value RE education offers, this training requirement is absent in Jordan. We aimed to assess RE education offerings of pharmacy master programs in Jordan and compare with the top-ranked pharmacy graduate programs globally. Therefore, a list of universities that offer research-based pharmacy master programs was created. Each program was evaluated for the inclusion of RE education. A qualitative content analysis approach based on inductive reasoning and latent analysis was followed to analyze the data. Results of the study showed a lack of appropriate RE education for graduate-level pharmacy programs in Jordan with only 40% of the programs partially discuss selected topics related to RE. Regarding pharmacy graduate programs globally, 10% offer a standalone RE course, 40% offer some discussions related to RE, another 10% do not offer RE education in any form, and the remaining 40% of the programs were difficult to assess due to lack of sufficient information available online. Based on the findings of this study, training in RE is tends to be lacking in pharmacy graduate programs in Jordan and globally, with a greater lack in Jordan than globally. There is a need to incorporate formal RE education into programs that do not offer this type of instruction. Programs that formally touch on some aspects of RE need to expand the scope of topics to include more RE-related themes. Integrating a standalone RE course into pharmacy graduate programs is highly encouraged.

The Argus Commission examined changes that should be considered by colleges and schools of pharmacy to meet the bold aim of better integrating pharmacists' and physicians' practices articulated by President Sorensen. The Commission assessed the readiness of pharmacy educators to contribute to the acceleration of practice transformation. The primary focus of the report is on how the doctor of pharmacy curriculum and post-graduate training might be modified and better aligned to ensure that graduates complete their education ready to engage in roles partnered with primary care clinicians. The aim is to achieve comprehensive medication management and other pharmacist patient care services as standards of care. The Argus Commission provides preliminary recommendations for new or more intensified priorities by the 2020-21 AACP Strategic Planning Committee as they update the AACP plan. This includes the recommendation that AACP should create the Center for Academic Innovation and Practice Transformation, a hub to coordinate many current and emerging activities relevant to accelerating change in pharmacy education and practice.

RESUMEN

The novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has impacted pharmacists in a variety of ways, including increased workloads, reduced hours, and ever-changing recommendations for managing this unique infection. Trainees, both students and residents, have also dealt with numerous challenges and changes during this pandemic.

RESUMEN

The pharmacy degree at Monash University is a four year undergraduate Bachelor of Pharmacy with Honours (BPharm(Hons)), followed by a one year Master of Pharmacy incorporating a preregistration year of supervised practice, known in Australia as internship. The first cohort of the BPharm(Hons) will graduate in 2020. A key principle of the new curriculum was that clinical experiential placements should commence early in the curriculum, be fully integrated with the didactic curriculum, and prepare students for internship by developing their competence in performing useful and relevant tasks in the workplace. Entrustable Professional Activities (EPA) are used as the framework for their experiences.

RESUMEN

The pandemic has affected all walks of life and businesses, including education at all levels. Movement controls have forced the schools and universities to migrate the teaching and learning to be fully online. Some universities in large cities in Malyasia had already implemented blended learning and thus, were better prepared to adjust to the current situation. However, the universities, which practiced mainly traditional didactic courses, were struggling to suddenly change the mode of delivery. Many relied on the creativity of the lecturers and students.

RESUMEN

The current COVID-19 pandemic with the associated social distancing measures has imposed unprecedented challenges on educational institutions around the globe. Schools and colleges of pharmacy across the United States have responded by offering distance learning options and are designing contingency plans to maintain operations. The pandemic has impacted all aspects of pharmacy education including didactic instruction, experiential education, interprofessional education, cocurricular activities, community service, scholarship, professional service, well-being, resilience, recruitment, admissions, and celebrating student success. Pharmacy faculty, staff, and students are subsequently trying to navigate a rapidly changing environment by taking advantage of opportunities as they arise while mitigating many threats that are affecting their professional and personal lives. Pharmacy faculty will need to remain flexible, embrace change, and create innovative solutions to help students progress through the curriculum while maintaining their contributions to society. Students will need to find creative ways to remain engaged with their courses and cocurricular activities.
