RESUMEN

AIMS: This study aimed to analyse the evolution of the public image of nursing in the context of the constantly developing nursing profession. DESIGN: The Rodger's evolving concept analysis was applied. METHODS: PubMed, CINAHL, Web of Science, Scopus, and ProQuest databases were searched for articles published between 1 January 2001, and 30 April 2022, using the search terms; "NURS * AND image". The selected literature was screened using Rodgers' evolutionary method to explore the attributes, antecedents and consequences of the concept. RESULTS: The defining attributes were identified as nursing (nursing as the collective object), public (public as the collective subject) and information (the medium of interaction between the collective subject and the collective object). Nursing elements were classified into intrinsic elements (professional spirit, professional knowledge and professional skills) and extrinsic (appearance, language and behaviour) elements. Public elements were further subcategorized into public categories (internal organizational public and external organizational public) and public perceptions (cognition, emotion and behavioural intention). The information elements are mainly classified as information generation, dissemination, identification, processing and judgement. The antecedents and consequences of the public perception of nursing were also identified. CONCLUSIONS: The public image of nursing is dynamic and has evolved over time. Its dynamism and malleability imply that the traditional public image of nursing can be improved through targeted interventions in nursing practice, management and education. IMPLICATIONS FOR THE PROFESSION: Identifying the antecedents and consequences associated with the public image of nursing will help the healthcare organizations adopt effective strategies to alleviate the shortage of the nursing workforce and promote the development of the nursing profession. No Patient or Public Contribution.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: to analyze the availability (in terms of stock and composition) and accessibility (in terms of geographical distribution) of the nursing workforce in Brazil. METHOD: this is a descriptive, cross-sectional study with retrospective data collection, identified by combining databases available on institutional websites and structured according to indicators from the World Health Organization's "National Health Workforce Accounts". The study considered nursing professionals at senior level (nurses) and middle level (nursing auxiliaries and technicians). Indicators of stock, composition, distribution (by age group and gender) and the ratio of nurses to doctors were included. RESULTS: there was an increase in the number of personnel between 2005 and 2010, mainly in middle and technical level professionals. There are more personnel aged between 36 and 55, with a predominance of women in all categories, despite the increase in men. There was an uneven distribution of personnel across the country's regions, with the Southeast having the largest number of professionals. The ratio of nurses to doctors is less than one in the South and Southeast. CONCLUSION: despite the large number of nurses, their distribution is uneven. The growth of nursing technicians has significantly outstripped that of nurses, indicating more intensive technical training policies than those found in higher education.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: to map nurses' skills for nursing teleconsultation in Primary Health Care. METHOD: this is a scoping review guided by the recommendations of the Joanna Briggs Institute Reviewer's Manual, carried out in seven databases and repositories of theses and dissertations. The selection of studies was carried out in Rayyan by two independent, blind reviewers. Data analysis was carried out descriptively. RESULTS: 23 studies were selected, which showed that the skills necessary for nursing teleconsultation in primary care were: communication, clinical, technological and ethical. The lack of digital infrastructure was identified as one of the main barriers to the implementation of teleconsultation. The lack of access to information and communications technology and/or the internet, the severity of the clinical condition and the patient's non-adherence to the remote consultation were also identified. CONCLUSION: nursing teleconsultation in primary care is an emerging way of providing health care. However, for its implementation it is necessary to train nurses in the following skills: communication, clinical, technological, ethical and those related to the infrastructure of the teleconsultation environment.

RESUMEN

Nursing has always been a cost for the institutions within which nurses work. This fact has influenced almost everything that affects how nurses are utilized and valued. As a cost, nurses are closely managed on the margin, always constrained by the resource machinations of organizations and systems with little determination or enumeration of the contributions nurses make to the service and financial value represented by algorithms and metrics that enumerate and demonstrate nurse's impact and contribution to service and financial value. This article further pushes the boundaries of this circumstance, challenging nurse and health leaders to reconceptualize nursing contribution and recalibrate the determination and calculation of nursing value as a sustainable baseline for nursing leadership for the future.

RESUMEN

AIMS: To analyse the bibliometric data of nursing journals covering general fields, specializations, skills and practices and investigate the influence of selection factors on the one-year improved SCImago journal rank (SJR). DESIGN: A bibliometric analysis. METHODS: The study sample included academic journals in the field of nursing indexed in the Scopus and SJR database using data from 2020 to 2022. Quantile regression were performed that investigated the influence factors over the one-year improved SJR when variables were found to be non-normally distributed, characterized by extremely high kurtosis. RESULTS: Results from 539 nursing journals retrieved from the Scopus and SCImago databases revealed that citation index remains the main factor that positively affects differences in SJR, while citable articles only affect the early stages of quantile regression. In addition, an excessively high number of research articles may negatively affect SJR, and the influence of self-citations can initially be positive but become negative the following year. Citations continue to be the dominant factor, while the rapid growth in the number of articles and self-citations must be addressed with caution. NO PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION: No patient or public contribution.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: analyzing the effectiveness of an educational intervention on the knowledge of nursing professionals regarding the immunization of people with the human immunodeficiency virus. METHOD: a quasi-experimental study evaluated professionals' knowledge through a knowledge test applied before and after the development of an online training course. The data was analyzed using frequency, median, mean, standard deviation, and association tests. RESULTS: the sample consisted of 77 nursing professionals whose mean age was 43.2 years (SD+/-8.2). More than half of the individuals worked in basic health units (58.4%), 22.1% worked in specialized services that provide clinical monitoring for people with the human immunodeficiency virus, and 42 (54.5%) were nursing assistants or technicians. The professionals' performance improved after the intervention, with an increase in the median number of correct answers from 23.0 to 27.0 (p<0.001). CONCLUSION: offering an online training course on the immunization of people with the human immunodeficiency virus, as a continuing education activity, proved to be effective in improving nursing professionals' knowledge on this subject. HIGHLIGHTS: (1) Services do not evaluate the vaccination status of people living with HIV.(2) The knowledge of health professionals may influence vaccination rates.(3) Health professionals' knowledge of immunization may be insufficient.

RESUMEN

The public's perception of the nursing image deeply influences nurses' work and professional development. However, the Taiwanese public's perception of nursing remains unclear. This study aimed to determine the validity and reliability of a Chinese version of the Nursing Image Scale (NIS) in Taiwan. This was a psychometric study using a cross-sectional survey. Participants were recruited via the snowball sampling method through the online community software LINE from August 1 to 13, 2019. After data collection, the construction and validation of the NIS to measure public opinion were assessed, including content validity, corrected item-total correlation, exploratory factor analysis (EFA), and reliability. A total of 1331 valid responses were included in the analysis. After EFA analysis, the 20 scale items were divided across the four domains of prudence and care, innovation and cooperation, efficiency and division, and professionalism and respect. The NIS (Chinese version) was valid and reliable for measuring public opinion and may be used to examine changes in public perceptions of nursing.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: to describe the development of a predictive nursing workload classifier model, using artificial intelligence. METHOD: retrospective observational study, using secondary sources of electronic patient records, using machine learning. The convenience sample consisted of 43,871 assessments carried out by clinical nurses using the Perroca Patient Classification System, which served as the gold standard, and clinical data from the electronic medical records of 11,774 patients, which constituted the variables. In order to organize the data and carry out the analysis, the Dataiku® data science platform was used. Data analysis occurred in an exploratory, descriptive and predictive manner. The study was approved by the Ethics and Research Committee of the institution where the study was carried out. RESULTS: the use of artificial intelligence enabled the development of the nursing workload assessment classifier model, identifying the variables that most contributed to its prediction. The algorithm correctly classified 72% of the variables and the area under the Receiver Operating Characteristic curve was 82%. CONCLUSION: a predictive model was developed, demonstrating that it is possible to train algorithms with data from the patient's electronic medical record to predict the nursing workload and that artificial intelligence tools can be effective in automating this activity.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The literature describes how male high school students with an interest in a career in nursing have struggled to obtain guidance, support, and accurate information. PURPOSE: The purpose of this mixed-methods study was to understand the perceptions and practices of school counselors when advising male high school students about a nursing career. METHOD: Sixty-one school counselors completed an online survey, and nine participated in online interviews between June 2022 and February 2023. RESULTS: Unlike previously published studies, school counselors have an overall positive view of men in nursing and were supportive of male high school students becoming nurses. CONCLUSIONS: School counselors need more accurate and consistent resources.

RESUMEN

Although nursing seems to understand itself and its practice as complex, the literature is less clear about what this actually means. While complexity is discussed as an attribute of nursing, it is also suggested that complexity in nursing remains misunderstood and poorly articulated, is devalued, is not considered as a measure of health outcomes and remains invisible. Despite the overarching lack of a definition, some nurse scholars have conceptualized complexity as a complex intervention. For these authors, complexity becomes a complex intervention defined as that which is composed of component parts interacting in a variety of ways that influence the delivery of and outcomes of health-related interventions for populations. Conceptualizing complexity as a complex intervention forces nursing to embrace and adopt a received interpretation of complexity as expressed through complexity theory and complexity science. While complexity theory may afford us some tools for thinking about complexity, when we deconstruct nursing complexity to explicitly determinate and quantifiable tasks, this artificially narrowed orientation to complexity reveals an oversimplified explanation of the complexities associated with nursing and serves to blind us to its real qualities. Through a consideration of complexity from a Western philosophical tradition, I demonstrate that when nursing adopts the received interpretation of complexity as a complex intervention, this perspective on complexity contains nursing epistemologically and ontologically. I offer an extended conceptualization of complexity framed upon the consideration that nurses assume complexity and do not reduce it; that nurses have the capacity to not be paralysed by complexity and have developed logics to mobilize it in productive ways. Mobilizing complexity through navigating paradox and contradiction shapes an orientation to complexity that embraces an extended epistemology. This extended epistemology is characterized by a 'yes/and' mindset that expresses the dynamic and generative relationship between forms of knowledge which reflects complexity that characterizes nursing.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Significant reforms are occurring in health practitioner regulation across Canada. Within the nursing profession, growing workforce challenges and health system demands have accelerated the pace of changes to nursing regulation policies and practices. There is significant political investment to modernize and harmonize nursing regulation across Canada, and evidence is needed to guide regulatory decision-making. To better understand the current state of scholarship and the gaps that exist, a comprehensive understanding of the available literature informing nursing regulation in Canada is first warranted. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this scoping review is to examine the nature, extent, and range of literature focused on nursing regulation in Canada. METHODS: The review will be conducted in accordance with the Joanna Briggs Institute guidelines for scoping reviews. We will search electronic databases, including Ovid MEDLINE, Ovid EMBASE, CINAHL, Scopus, and Web of Science Core Collection. We will also search for grey literature using the websites of Canadian nursing regulatory bodies, nursing organizations, and other leading Canadian regulatory organizations. No limitations will be placed on the year of publication. The review will include papers that explore nursing regulation in Canada, including topics such as education program accreditation or approval, licensure, standards of practice and code of conduct/ethics development and enforcement, continuing competence, discipline and conduct, regulatory models, governance, and reform. We will extract data using a predeveloped tool. Data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics and conventional content analysis. RESULTS: A preliminary search in Ovid MEDLINE was undertaken on December 7, 2023, and a full search was conducted in 5 academic databases on March 15, 2024. Findings will be presented using evidence tables and a narrative summary. Reporting will follow the PRISMA-ScR (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews) guidelines. This scoping review is expected to be completed in early 2025. CONCLUSIONS: The results will be disseminated through conference presentations and a publication in a peer-reviewed journal. The findings will provide a comprehensive overview of the state of nursing regulation literature across Canada and inform the development of a focused research agenda. RESUMEN

Within the Nursing field, it is common that when talking about prescription an association is established among drug administration, prescribed dosage, frequency and route of administration and it is also normal for this to be the case; a drug without dosage, frequency and route of administration is not of much use, given that little could be decided about its effects, safety in administration, and response of the body to substances prescribed to solve health problems. Following this common thread, when we nurses hear about prescription, we quickly associate this term with drugs, opening a collective debate between what can be prescribed and what cannot. However, we often forget our real competence in prescribing, which is undoubtedly care.
