RESUMEN

To comprehensively analyze the psychological health status of operating room nurses and identify influencing factors. The research compares psychological health differences based on nurses' years of experience, specifically examining depression and anxiety scores. A detailed assessment was conducted, focusing on nurses with varying experience levels. Findings revealed higher depression scores among mid to senior-level nurses, while junior-level nurses exhibited elevated anxiety scores. Additionally, overall dissatisfaction with physical health and various subhealth symptoms were reported. Multifactorial analysis identified working hours, disaster relief experience, and perceived occupational benefits as primary influencers. Through comparative analysis, it was found that the average score of self-rating depression scale and self-rating anxiety scale was 53.8 ±â€…12.2 points and 47.6 ±â€…10.5 points respectively. The depression score of middle and senior nurses was significantly higher than that of junior nurses (P < .05). The anxiety score of primary nurses was significantly higher than that of middle and senior nurses (P < .05). The results indicate that the duration of work, previous experience in disaster relief, and nurses' perception of occupational benefits were the main factors influencing the psychological health status of operating room nurses (P < .05). Healthcare institutions are recommended to implement targeted interventions based on nurses' experience levels, addressing specific psychological health needs. Future research should delve into specific subgroups, conduct long-term tracking, expand the scope of influencing factors, assess the effectiveness of intervention measures, and explore cross-cultural aspects.

RESUMEN

This rapid review delves into Clinical Decision Support Systems (CDSS) for Operating Room Nurses (ORN). Analyzing three studies over 20 years, it highlights limited impact on ORN decision-making. The findings suggest that CDSS positively influence some aspects of care, ORN perceive them as supplementary rather than pivotal to their decision-making processes. Our review highlights the importance of understanding ORN' decision-making for customizing CDSS effectively.

RESUMEN

The purpose of this study was to develop a standardized hand-off program based on the SWITCH tool (surgical procedure, wet, instruments, tissue, counts, have you any questions?) and to examine its effectiveness in terms of self-reported perceptions of hand-off satisfaction, self-efficacy, surgical nursing performance, and communication competence among OR staff members. This randomized controlled trial used a nonsynchronized control group with a pretest and posttest design. The nurses in the experimental group received one educational session and used the standardized hand-off tool for four weeks. The control group performed hand offs using the usual method rather than a tool. After the intervention, self-reported hand-off satisfaction (P = .001), self-efficacy (P = .005), and surgical nursing performance (P < .001) scores were significantly higher in the experimental group than in the control group. A standardized hand-off tool can improve nurse perceptions of satisfaction, self-efficacy, and surgical nursing performance.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Tackling operating theatre waiting lists may focus healthcare organisations' attention on increased productivity while downplaying safety concerns. AIM: To explore safety culture in a perioperative department from operating theatre practitioners' perspective. METHOD: Cross-sectional pen-and-paper survey among nurses in an operating theatre department in Malta using the Safety, Communication, Operational Reliability and Engagement questionnaire. FINDINGS: The response rate was 71.2% (n = 146). Engagement domains and Organisational Safety Culture domains were perceived to be at an average level, apart from Unit Leadership which was perceived to be low. Burnout domains were perceived to be high or very high. Correlation analysis showed that leaders' recognition of staff feedback and input is associated with improved safety culture perceptions. CONCLUSION: An organisational win-win situation is achievable, whereby safety culture perceptions are improved, not necessarily by decreasing job demands such as tackling waiting lists, but by recognising operating theatre staff's input and involving them in work-related decisions.

RESUMEN

Evidence-based practice (EBP) is a clinical decision-making process that is grounded in the utilization of the most reliable and up-to-date evidence. It involves utilizing resources and evidence to enhance patient management. The application of evidence-based decisions in patient care and education is of utmost importance in the performance of health sciences students. However, the emphasis on this concept among operating room nursing students has been lacking. Hence, the objective of this research is to assess the implementation of evidence-based practice among operating room nursing students studying in the operating room department at the Shiraz University of Medical Sciences in Iran. The study follows a descriptive, cross-sectional design, with a sample of 148 operating room nursing students selected through census sampling based on the student list. After obtaining informed consent, participants completed a demographic information form and the Rubin-Parrish evidence-based practice questionnaire. The data that were gathered underwent analysis through the utilization of SPSS version 22 software, employing descriptive statistics, T-tests, and Pearson correlation coefficient tests. The results revealed that the overall average score of evidence-based practice among the students exceeded the standard scores (172.66 ± 14.74). There was a significant association between the evidence-based practice score and prior familiarity with evidence-based practice, interest in the field of study, research experience, intention to participate in the Master's exam, and the participants' grade point average (GPA) (p < 0.05). These findings indicate that operating room nursing students displayed an average level of evidence-based practice, emphasizing the need for effective plans and strategies to improve their performance. Addressing the identified factors from this study becomes crucial in this regard.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to examine related factors of operating room nurses' attitudes and awareness towards surgery-related pressure injury prevention in Turkey, Croatia, and Italy. METHODS: A descriptive and cross-sectional design was used. The study was conducted between March and September 2023. Data were collected with an online questionnaire created on Google Forms, consisting of a Nurse Information Form, a Surgery-related Pressure Injury Awareness Form, and the Attitude towards Pressure Ulcer Prevention Instrument. RESULTS: The sample of the study consisted of 258 operating room nurses working in Turkey, Croatia, and Italy. It was found that the majority of the participants (70.90 %) did not use a risk scale, had not received education on pressure injury prevention and treatment (58.10 %) but wanted to receive it (86 %). Mean attitude scores of operating room nurses by country were at an adequate level in Turkey (42.48 ± 4.30) but not at the desired level in Croatia (37.48 ± 3.44) and Italy (36.20 ± 4.02). While there was a significant positive relationship between the awareness and attitudes of operating room nurses in Turkey (p = 0.002) and Croatia (p < 0.001), no relationship was found between these variables of nurses in Italy (p = 0.109). A statistically significant difference was found between nurses' consideration of themselves sufficient and their attitudes and awareness in all three countries (p < 0.05). It was also determined that reading articles affected nurses' awareness in all countries. CONCLUSIONS: While operating room nurses' attitudes towards preventing pressure injuries were adequate in Turkey, it was determined that those of the nurses in Croatia and Italy were not at the desired level. Nurses should receive regular training on surgical pressure injuries to increase their awareness and to support them in implementing the recommendations of pressure injury guidelines in accordance with institutional policy.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Scrub nurses play a crucial role in facilitating orthopaedic surgeries, and thus intraoperative scrub nurse turnover may disrupt the workflow of the surgical team and prolong duration of surgery (DOS). The purpose of this study was to quantify the impact of intraoperative scrub nurse turnover on operative time of orthopaedic surgeries lasting less than 3h in duration. METHODS: Prospectively collected databases from two institutions were retrospectively queried to identify all orthopaedic procedures of maximum mean duration of 180min from March 4th, 2018 to August 31st, 2022. Cases were divided into two groups, those with scrub nurse turnover and those without. Propensity score matching was conducted to match groups by surgeon, hospital, patient age, gender, and ASA classification. Unpaired t-tests were used to compare mean DOS for each surgical procedure. Average treatment effect on treated (ATET) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated. RESULTS: Scrub nurse turnover significantly prolonged DOS for both bone forearm facture open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) (ATET=21.08, p=0.001), ankle ORIF (ATET=21.26, p<0.001), clavicle ORIF (ATET=16.16, p=0.028), femur intramedullary nail (ATET=11.52, p=0.003), rotator cuff repair (ATET=16.88, p<0.001), partial discectomy (ATET=10.52, p=0.001), total knee arthroplasty (TKA) (ATET=5.69, p<0.001), anterior total hip arthroplasty (THA) (ATET=8.80, p<0.001), lateral THA (ATET=7.02, p<0.001), and uncemented hip hemiarthroplasty (ATET=16.79, p=0.049). CONCLUSION: Intraoperative scrub nurse turnover significantly prolongs surgical times in orthopaedic surgeries lasting up to 3h in duration. This highlights the importance of developing strategies to prevent intraoperative scrub nurse turnover to improve OR efficiency and decrease healthcare costs.

RESUMEN

We conducted this study aimed to explore the effect of operating room nursing intervention on wound infection in patients undergoing ovarian cysts surgery. A computer system was used to search PubMed, Web of Science, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, Wanfang, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure databases, from database inception to October 2023, for randomised controlled trials (RCTs) on the application of operating room nursing intervention to ovarian cyst surgery. Literature that met the requirements was independently screened by two researchers, and data were extracted and assessed for literature quality. RevMan 5.4 software was applied for data analysis. Fifteen RCTs involving 1187 patients were finally included. The analyses revealed that, compared with routine nursing, the implementation of operating room nursing intervention had a significant advantage in reducing the incidence of wound infections (1.17% vs. 5.44%, odds ratio [OR]: 0.30, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.15-0.58, p = 0.0004) and postoperative complications (6.34% vs. 25.17%, OR: 0.20, 95%CI: 0.13-0.29, p < 0.00001), as well as being able to shorten the operative time (standardised mean difference [SMD]: -3.93, 95%CI: -5.67 to -2.20, p < 0.00001), hospital length of stay (SMD: -2.54, 95%CI: -3.19 to -1.89, p < 0.00001) and gastrointestinal recovery time (SMD: -1.61, 95%CI: -2.24 to -0.98, p < 0.00001) in patients undergoing ovarian cysts surgery. This study confirmed by meta-analysis that the operating room nursing intervention can significantly reduce the incidence of wound infection and complications, shorten the operative time, gastrointestinal recovery time, and hospital length of stay after ovarian cyst surgery.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Operating room nurses (ORNs) who directly deal with the treatment and care of COVID-19 patients during the pandemic are at risk in terms of psychological stress and other mental health problems. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to compare the anxiety and depression levels of ORNs working in different countries in the COVID-19 outbreak, and to determine the predictors and the difference between countries. METHODS: This was a descriptive and cross-sectional study. Data were collected online using a google form between February 2021-February 2022. The universe of the research is nurses who are members of national Perioperative Nurses Association (USA, Türkiye, Australia, England, India, Israel) and 1127 ORNs participated the study. In multivariate analysis, independent predictors of anxiety and depression status were examined by binary logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: The rate of anxiety is 5.46 times higher in nurses in the USA, 5.07 times higher among nurses in Australia, and 4.49 times higher for nurses in England. It was determined that the rate of depression in ORNs working in Türkiye was 5.97 times higher. It was found that the rate of depression is 1.59 times higher in ORNs living away from the family after care of COVID-19 patient. CONCLUSION: Despite some differences between countries in terms of health system, patient potential, economic and the opportunities offered, generally high levels of anxiety and/or depression indicate that all ORNs need urgent support. Identifying risk factors will help recognize anxiety and depression in ORNs and take measures to protect their mental health during the pandemic.

RESUMEN

This study assessed the efficacy of the enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocol in operating room nursing care for patients who underwent single-port video-assisted thoracoscopic lung cancer surgery. The study included 82 surgical lung cancer cases. The patients underwent single-port video-assisted thoracoscopic lung cancer surgery between April 1, 2021, and June 31, 2022. Of the 82 patients, 42 received nursing care under the ERAS protocol (experimental group) and 40 had routine nursing care (control group) in the operation room. Based on the 2 different nursing care approaches, the postoperative functional recovery efficacy, quality of life, postoperative complications, and psychological status were compared between the 2 groups. In our analysis, the mean anal venting time, average early out-of-bed time, the average time to liquid resumption, atelectasis, and pulmonary infection rate were significantly lower in the experimental group than in the control group (P < .05). The Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS) and the Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS) scores were also significantly lower in the experimental group than in the control group (P < .05). Other indicators were not significantly different between the 2 groups. Our results show that the implementation of an ERAS protocol in operating room nursing care is feasible and should be clinically applied. The ERAS protocol may enhance the recovery of patients who underwent single-port video-assisted thoracoscopic lung cancer surgery.

RESUMEN

The nursing work in the operating room has the characteristics of long time, strong technicality, and heavy work, which have an important influence on the quality of the operation. Operating room nursing recommendations based on data mining technology can solve a series of practical problems in clinical nursing and nursing management. This paper selects the clustering algorithm in commonly used data mining technology as the research object and actually analyzes the impact of this algorithm in operating room nursing recommendations. At this stage, there is little research on data mining technology in the field of nursing in China. This paper aims to provide new ideas for the field of nursing research by exploring the actual application in the field of nursing.

RESUMEN

Objective: To explore the effects of seamless operating room nursing combined with multistyle health education on the psychological state, rehabilitation quality, and nursing satisfaction in patients with internal fixation of femoral fracture. Methods: Eighty patients who received internal fixation of femoral fracture in our hospital (November 2020-November 2021) were chosen as the research objects, and their clinical data were retrospectively analyzed. They were divided into experimental group and control group according to the sequence of hospital admission. In perioperative period, the control group received routine nursing measures and the experimental group received seamless operating room nursing combined with multistyle health education. The patients' psychological state, rehabilitation quality, and nursing satisfaction after intervention were compared between the two groups. Results: Compared with the control group, the experimental group achieved remarkably lower score of Profile of Mood States (POMS) after nursing (p < 0.001). The experimental group had much higher cognitive level scores, Harris hip score (HHS), Functional Independence Measure (FIM) score, and nursing satisfaction score in comparison with the control group (p < 0.05). In perioperative period, the experimental group had much lower total incidence of complications in comparison with the control group (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Seamless operating room nursing combined with multistyle health education, as an effective measure to improve the rehabilitation quality of the patients with internal fixation of femoral fracture, has better effects on improving the patients' psychological state and reducing complications in perioperative period in comparison with the routine nursing intervention. Further studies are conducive to providing a better solution for the patients with internal fixation of femoral fracture.
