This study investigates the combined effect of vitamin C and chromium on BMI, lipid profile, LFTs and HbA1c of Diabetes Mellitus type 2 patients. This is randomized controlled trial study. For this study a total of 60 patients (n=28 female, n=32 male) Diabetes Mellitus type 2 patients were selected. They were divided into treatment group (vitamin C (500mg) Chromium (200µg) and control group (placebo) comprising thirty patients per group. Mean age in control group and treatment group is 33± 5.729 and 33±7.017 respectively. Statistical analysis showed significant results of lipid profile; total cholesterol (mg/dl) 198±66.1 P=0.008, High-Density Lipoprotein 38±7.5, P<0.001, Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL) (mg/dl) 105.1±22.4, P=0.002 and Triglycerides 191±64.3, P=0.02 are respectively. Levels of serum ALT (u/l) (34.7±9.1, P<0.001) and AST (u/l) (31.6 ±8.6, P<0.001) were significantly lower as compared to control group. HbA1c percentages were also normalized (5.45±0.2, P<.001) as compared to group 2. BMI values were also improved (P=0.01) after treatment. Combined supplementation of vitamin C and chromium reduce the plasma lipid percentage, blood glucose levels and also improve the ALT and AST functions.

This study is aimed at assessing the impact of soluble dietary fiber inulin on the treatment of diabetes-related chronic inflammation and kidney injury in mice with type 2 diabetes (T2DM). The T2DM model was created by feeding the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) mice a high-fat diet and intraperitoneally injecting them with streptozotocin (50 mg/kg for 5 consecutive days). The thirty-six ICR mice were divided into three dietary groups: the normal control (NC) group, the T2DM (DM) group, and the DM + inulin diet (INU) group. The INU group mice were given inulin at the dose of 500 mg/kg gavage daily until the end of the 12th week. After 12 weeks, the administration of inulin resulted in decreased serum levels of fasting blood glucose (FBG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), and creatinine (CRE). The administration of inulin not only ameliorated renal injury but also resulted in a reduction in the mRNA expressions of inflammatory factors in the spleen and serum oxidative stress levels, when compared to the DM group. Additionally, inulin treatment in mice with a T2DM model led to a significant increase in the concentrations of three primary short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) (acetic acid, propionic acid, and butyric acid), while the concentration of advanced glycation end products (AGEs), a prominent inflammatory factor in diabetes, exhibited a significant decrease. The results of untargeted metabolomics indicate that inulin has the potential to alleviate inflammatory response and kidney damage in diabetic mice. This beneficial effect is attributed to its impact on various metabolic pathways, including glycerophospholipid metabolism, taurine and hypotaurine metabolism, arginine biosynthesis, and tryptophan metabolism. Consequently, oral inulin emerges as a promising treatment option for diabetes and kidney injury.

Lanifibranor, a pan-PPAR agonist, improves liver histology in patients with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), who have poor cardiometabolic health (CMH) and cardiovascular events as major mortality cause. NATIVE trial secondary and exploratory outcomes (ClinicalTrials.gov NCT03008070) were analyzed for the effect of lanifibranor on IR, lipid and glucose metabolism, systemic inflammation, blood pressure (BP), hepatic steatosis (imaging and histological grading) for all patients of the original analysis. With lanifibranor, triglycerides, HDL-C, apolipoproteins, insulin, HOMA-IR, HbA1c, fasting glucose (FG), hs-CRP, ferritin, diastolic BP and steatosis improved significantly, independent of diabetes status: most patients with prediabetes returned to normal FG levels. Significant adiponectin increases correlated with hepatic and CMH marker improvement; patients had an average weight gain of 2.5 kg, with 49% gaining ≥2.5% weight. Therapeutic benefits were similar regardless of weight change. Here, we show that effects of lanifibranor on liver histology in MASH are accompanied with CMH improvement, indicative of potential cardiovascular clinical benefits.

Diabetic nephropathy (DN), a micro vascular complication of diabetes, is the main cause of end-stage renal disease, with a morbidity over 40% of diabetes. High glucose and lipid metabolism dysfunction are the leading cause of the development of DN. Previous study demonstrated that increased expression or activation of SREBPs in models of DN. Leonuride (LE), as an active constituent of Leonurus japonicus Houttuyn, has multiple biological activities, including antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Previous studies showed that increasing the degradation of mature SREBPs is a robust way of lowering lipids and improve lipid metabolism dysfunction. However, effective regulation method of SREBPs degradation are still lacking. Herein, this study indicated that LE can effectively improve glucose and lipid metabolism disorders. In addition, the kidney function was also improved by inhibition of SREBPs activities in streptozocin (STZ)-induced type II diabetic mice. To our knowledge, this is the first time to describe the detailed mechanism of LE on the inhibition of precursor SREBPs, which would present a new direction for diabetic nephropathy treatment.

Vanadyl sulfate (VS), is a component of some food supplements and experimental drugs. This study was carried out to present a novel method for induction of Type 2 diabetes in rats, then for the first time in literature, for evaluating the effect of VS on metabolic parameters and gene expression, simultaneously. 40 male wistar rats were distributed between the four groups, equally. High fat diet and fructose were used for diabetes induction. Diabetic rats treated by two different dose of VS for 12 weeks. Metabolic profiles were evaluated by commercial available kits and gene expression were assayed by real time-PCR. Compared to controls, in non-treated diabetic rats, weight, glucose, triglyceride, total cholesterol, insulin and insulin resistance were increased significantly (p-value <0.05) that indicated induction of type 2 diabetes. Further, the results showed that VS significantly reduced weight, insulin secretion, Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha (TNF-α) genes expression, lipid profiles except HDL that we couldn't find any significant change and increased Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor- gamma (PPAR-γ) gene expression in VS-treated diabetic animals in comparison with the non-treated diabetics. Our study demonstrated that vanadyl supplementation in diabetic rats had advantageous effects on metabolic profiles and related gene expression.

Diabetes mellitus, recognized by elevated glucose level in the body fluids is commonly caused by less insulin production or its action. To overcome the complications of diabetes, chemical drugs are never preferred over herbal medicines. Present study was designed to find out the anti-diabetic and health-promoting effects of ethanolic leaf extracts of Cucumis melo and Citrullus lanatus in induced-diabetic albino rats. Thirty male albino rats were bought from the animal house of the university and divided randomly into five feeding groups (n=6). Diabetes was induced in rats of groups A, B, C & D by a single dose of intra-peritoneal injection of streptozotocin (55 mg/Kg), whereas, the rats of group E were considered as control. The rats of groups A, B & C were fed basal diet supplemented with plant extracts (150mg/Kg body weight), whereas; only basal diet was offered to rats of groups D & E. After 28 days of the experiment, blood was collected for biochemical analysis. Results revealed that body weight, glucose, AST, ALB, GGT, HDL, cholesterol, triglyceride, urea and creatinine level differed significantly among treatment groups. It was therefore concluded that ethanolic leaf extracts of Cucumis melo and Citrullus lanatus can be used separately or in combination for the management of diabetes.

Medicinal plants contain a wide variety of bioactive phytoconstituents which can serve as new therapeutic agents for several diseases. This study examines the antidiabetic potential of Aitchisonia rosea in alloxan-induced diabetic rats and identifies its bioactive phytoconstituents using GC-MS. In vitro, antidiabetic potential was established using the α-amylase inhibition assay. In vivo, antidiabetic potential was investigated by employing the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). GC-MS analysis was used to identify the bioactive phytoconstituents. The in vitro and in vivo tests showed that the aqueous extract of A. rosea possesses better antidiabetic potential. The α-amylase inhibition assay highlighted an IC50 value of 134.87µg/ml. In an oral glucose tolerance test, rats given an aqueous A. rosea extract significantly lowered their blood sugar levels significant reduction in the blood glucose concentration was observed in the oral glucose tolerance test in rats treated with the aqueous A. rosea extract. GC-MS investigation revealed many phytoconstituents, with serverogenin acetate and cycloheptasiloxane tetradecamethyl being important antidiabetic agents. This study found anti-diabetic properties in A. rosea extract. The phytochemical and GC-MS investigation also found serverogenin acetate and cycloheptasiloxane tetradecamethyl, which could be used to develop new antidiabetic drugs.

The present study was designed to assess Tradescantia spathacea's antidiabetic ability, as well as the antiulcer activity of the entire plant extract. The diabetic condition was evaluated using Streptozotocin's oral glucose tolerance test, diabetes-alloxan and diabetes-models. Antiulcer activities were observed in rats where gastric ulcers were either caused by oral administration of ethanol, or pyloric ligation. Standards include ranitidine, glibenclamide and sucralfate. In all models, the blood glucose levels of animals treated with the test extract were found to be significantly lower compared to diabetic care. Similarly, in all models, the ulcer index in the animals treated with the test extract was found to be significantly lower relative to the animals under vehicle supervision. Our findings say T. Spathacea extract has essential anti-diabetic properties, as well as antiulcer properties.

Long-lasting hyperglycemia can potentially cause damage to organs such as the kidneys, liver and pancreas. Glimepiride (GLIM), as a drug of choice in the treatment of diabetes mellitus (DM), has the risk of decreasing the functioning of organs such as the kidneys, liver and pancreas. Black rice bran ethanol extract (EEBRB) with antioxidant content has been shown to protect the kidney, liver and pancreas organs. The aim of this study was to establish the effect of EEBRB on lowering fasting blood glucose (FBG) and protecting several organs after GLIM administration in alloxan (ALX)-induced hyperglycemic rats. A total of 20 rats were divided into 4 groups and treated for 21 days treatments using following preparations: normal control (NC), diabetic group (DC), GLIM 1 mg/ kgBW and combination of glimepiride 1mg/kgBW and EEBRB 50 mg/KgBW (GLBR). The results showed that the GLBR was able to lower blood glucose levels back to normal (<126 mg/dL) and protect kidney, liver and pancreas cells by increasing the amount in normal cells.

Insulin resistance complicates diabetes care. Its effectiveness and tolerability as an addition to metformin, DPP4 inhibitor and insulin treatment in type 2 diabetic patients will be examined in this research. Participants with type 2 diabetes from poor socio-economic backgrounds had HbA1c values ≥8.5% when using Insulin+Metformin+DPP-4 inhibitors. They received 10mg Empagliflozin daily for 12 weeks (n=143). The main outcome was change in HbA1c at 12th week from baseline. Secondary outcomes were baseline weight and week 12 FPG. Adjusted mean (SE) HbA1c increases at week 12 were: Mean ± SD 10.38 (6.8-17.0) vs. Mean±SD 9.05±1.77 (5.60-16.0) with empagliflozin 10mg. When added to the regimen, empagliflozin significantly reduced FPG, systolic and diastolic blood pressure. The mean (SE) BMI increases from baseline were 31.28±5.89 (16.0-66.0) and 29.73±5.47 (3.0-46.0) with 10mg empagliflozin. Two individuals experienced urinary tract infections as AEs, but no genital infections. Adding empagliflozin 10mg daily to metformin+DPP4 inhibitor+insulin improved glycemic control, body weight and blood pressure for 12 weeks. The intervention was well-tolerated, highlighting empagliflozin's therapeutic potential.

BACKGROUND: The efficacy and safety of lobeglitazone sulfate has been reported only in the Korean population, and no study has been conducted in India. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this 16-week randomized, double-blind, and multicenter study, the efficacy and safety of lobeglitazone sulfate 0.5 mg were evaluated with pioglitazone 15 mg. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients with ≥7.5% glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) ≤10.5% and on stable metformin dose were assigned to both treatment arms. The primary outcome was a mean change in HbA1c. Safety assessments included adverse events (AE), home-based glucose monitoring, vital parameters, electrocardiogram (ECG), and laboratory assessments. RESULTS: A total of 328 subjects were randomized equally in two groups. A statistically significant reduction in HbA1c at week 16 in the lobeglitazone group with the least square (LS) mean change: 1.01 [standard error (SE): 0.09] (p < 0.0001) was seen. The LS mean difference between the two groups was 0.05 (SE: 0.12) [95% confidence interval (CI): -0.18, 0.27], which was statistically significant (p = 0.0013). Statistically significant reductions were also observed in fasting and postprandial glucose. Treatment-emergent Aes (TEAE) were comparable between both groups. CONCLUSION: Lobeglitazone 0.5 mg once daily was found to be efficacious and safe in the treatment of T2DM in the Indian population. Lobeglitazone significantly improved glycemic parameters and was noninferior to pioglitazone; hence, it could be a promising insulin sensitizer in T2DM management in India.

DPP4 inhibitors are widely prescribed as treatments for type 2 diabetes. Because drug responses vary among individuals, we initiated investigations to identify genetic variants associated with the magnitude of drug responses. Sitagliptin (100 mg) was administered to 47 healthy volunteers. Several endpoints were measured to assess clinically relevant responses - including the effect of sitagliptin on glucose and insulin levels during an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). This pilot study confirmed that sitagliptin (100 mg) decreased the area under the curve for glucose during an OGTT (p = 0.0003). Furthermore, sitagliptin promoted insulin secretion during the early portion of the OGTT as reflected by an increase in the ratio of plasma insulin at 30 min divided by plasma insulin at 60 min (T30:T60) from mean ± SEM 0.87 ± 0.05 to 1.62 ± 0.36 mU/L (p = 0.04). The magnitude of sitagliptin's effect on insulin secretion (as judged by the increase in the T30:T60 ratio for insulin) was correlated with the magnitude of sitagliptin-induced increase in the area under the curve for intact plasma GLP1 levels during the first hour of the OGTT. This study confirmed previously reported sex differences in glucose and insulin levels during an OGTT. Specifically, females exhibited higher levels of glucose and insulin at the 90-180 min time points. However, we did not detect significant sex-associated differences in the magnitude of sitagliptin-induced changes in T30:T60 ratios for either glucose or insulin. In conclusion, T30:T60 ratios for insulin and glucose during an OGTT provide useful indices to assess pharmacodynamic responses to DPP4 inhibitors.

BACKGROUND: Studies have shown that RASGRP1 was potently associated with the onset of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and RASGRP1 rs7403531 was significantly correlated with islet function in T2DM patients. However, the effect of RASGRP1 polymorphism on blood glucose and blood pressure in T2DM patients after continuous treatment has yet to be fully elucidated. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the association between RASGRP1 genetic polymorphism and cardiovascular complications in T2DM patients, so as to provide more evidence for the individualized treatment of T2DM patients. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed a large-scale multicenter drug clinical study cohort that based on a 2 × 2 factorial (glucose control axis and blood pressure lowering axis) randomized controlled design, with follow-up for 5 years. The major vascular endpoint events included cardiovascular death, non-fatal stroke, coronary heart disease, new-onset or worsening renal disease, and diabetic retinopathy. RASGRP1 rs12593201, rs56254815 and rs7403531 were finally selected as candidate single nucleotide polymorphisms. Mixed linear model and Cox hazard ratio (HR) model were used for data analysis with IBM SPSS (version 20.0 for windows; Chicago, IL). RESULTS: Our study enrolled 1357 patients with high-risk diabetes, with a mean follow-up duration of 4.8 years. RASGRP1 rs7403531 was associated with vascular events in hypoglycemic and antihypertensive therapy. Specifically, compared with CC carriers, patients with CT/TT genotype had fewer major microvascular events (HR = 0.41, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.21-0.80, P = 0.009), and reduced the risk of major eye disease events (HR = 0.44, 95% CI 0.20-0.94, P = 0.03). For glucose lowering axis, CT/TT carriers had a lower risk of secondary nephropathy (HR = 0.48, 95% CI 0.25-0.92, P = 0.03) in patients with standard glycemic control. For blood pressure lowering axis, all cerebrovascular events (HR = 2.24, 95% CI 1.11-4.51, P = 0.025) and stroke events (HR = 2.07, 95% CI 1.03-4.15, P = 0.04) were increased in patients with CC genotype compared to those with CT/TT genotype in the placebo group, respectively. Furthermore, patients with CC genotype showed a reduced risk of major cerebrovascular events in antihypertensive group (HR = 0.36, 95% CI 0.15-0.86, P = 0.021). For RASGRP1 rs56254815, compared with the AA genotype carriers, the systolic blood pressure of AG/GG carriers in the antihypertensive group decreased by 1.5mmhg on average (P = 0.04). In the placebo group, the blood pressure of AG/GG carriers was 1.7mmHg higher than that of AA carriers (P = 0.02). CONCLUSION: We found that patients with G allele of RASGRP1 (rs56254815) showed a better antihypertensive therapy efficacy in T2DM patients. The rs7403531 T allele could reduce the risk of major microvascular events and major eye diseases in T2DM patients receiving either hypoglycemic or antihypertensive therapy. Our findings suggest that RASGRP1 genetic polymorphism might predict the cardiovascular complications in T2DM patients.

INTRODUCTION: There has been increasing evidence that the gut microbiota is closely related to type 2 diabetes (T2D). Metformin (Met) is often used in combination with saxagliptin (Sax) and repaglinide (Rep) for the treatment of T2D. However, little is known about the effects of these combination agents on gut microbiota in T2D. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: A T2D mouse model induced by a high-fat diet (HFD) and streptozotocin (STZ) was employed. The T2D mice were randomly divided into six groups, including sham, Met, Sax, Rep, Met+Sax and Met+Rep, for 4 weeks. Fasting blood glucose level, serum biochemical index, H&E staining of liver, Oil red O staining of liver and microbiota analysis by 16s sequencing were used to access the microbiota in the fecal samples. RESULTS: These antidiabetics effectively prevented the development of HFD/STZ-induced high blood glucose, and the combination treatment had a better effect in inhibiting lipid accumulation. All these dosing regimens restored the decreasing ratio of the phylum Bacteroidetes: Firmicutes, and increasing abundance of phylum Desulfobacterota, expect for Met. At the genus level, the antidiabetics restored the decreasing abundance of Muribaculaceae in T2D mice, but when Met was combined with Rep or Sax, the abundance of Muribaculaceae was decreased. The combined treatment could restore the reduced abundance of Prevotellaceae_UCG-001, while Met monotherapy had no such effect. In addition, the reduced Lachnospiraceae_NK4A136_group was well restored in the combination treatment groups, and the effect was much greater than that in the corresponding monotherapy group. Therefore, these dosing regimens exerted different effects on the composition of gut microbiota, which might be associated with the effect on T2D. CONCLUSIONS: Supplementation with specific probiotics may further improve the hypoglycemic effects of antidiabetics and be helpful for the development of new therapeutic drugs for T2D.

BACKGROUND: Self-monitoring of glucose is an essential component of type 1 diabetes (T1D) management. In recent years, continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) has provided an alternative to daily fingerstick testing for the optimisation of insulin dosing and general glucose management in people with T1D. While studies have been conducted to evaluate the impact of CGM on clinical outcomes in the US, Europe and Australia, there are limited data available for low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and further empirical evidence is needed to inform policy decision around their use in these countries. METHODS: This trial was designed as a pragmatic, parallel-group, open-label, multicentre, three-arm, randomised (1:1:1) controlled trial of continuous or periodic CGM device use versus standard of care in people with T1D in South Africa and Kenya. The primary objective of this trial will be to assess the impact of continuous or periodic CGM device use on glycaemic control as measured by change from baseline glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1c). Additional assessments will include clinical outcomes (glucose variation, time in/below/above range), safety (adverse events, hospitalisations), quality of life (EQ-5D, T1D distress score, Glucose Monitoring Satisfaction Survey for T1D), and health economic measures (incremental cost-effectiveness ratios, quality adjusted life years). DISCUSSION: This trial aims to address the substantial evidence gap on the impact of CGM device use on clinical outcomes in LMICs, specifically South Africa and Kenya. The trial results will provide evidence to inform policy and treatment decisions in these countries. The aim of this study was to improve insulin sensitivity in fructose-treated animals by ingestion of flavonoid quercetin. Several signs of insulin resistance have been developed in rats by drinking 10% fructose solution for 9 weeks. The effect of 6-week-gavage-administrated quercetin (20 mg/kg/day in 1% methyl cellulose solution) was monitored. Rats of the control groups received methyl cellulose vehicle as well. The most striking result of the quercetin treatment was the normalization of the fructose solution drinking to the level of drinking water intake. In addition, quercetin supplementation considerably decreased the plasma glucose and Homeostatic Model Assessment for Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR) index in rats consuming fructose. Surprisingly, fructose ingestion did not elevate plasma uric acid, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances, nitrotyrosine, or advanced glycation end products fluorescence. Instead, a reduction of the above parameters was observed. In summary, these results indicate that quercetin supplementation reduces fructose drinking and decreases plasma glucose and the HOMA-IR index. Furthermore, methyl cellulose, in combination with fructose, causes uric acid - lowering, antioxidant and anti-glycation effects. Thus, methyl cellulose possibly shifts fructose metabolism in favor of the utilization of antioxidant features of fructose. Our results call for using methyl cellulose in sweetened beverages and other sweetened food.

BACKGROUND: Severe perioperative hyperglycemia (SH) is a proven risk factor for postoperative complications after craniotomy. To reduce this risk, it has been proposed to implement the standardized clinical protocol for scheduled perioperative blood glucose concentration (BGC) monitoring. This would be followed by intravenous (IV) insulin infusion to keep BGC below 180 mg/dl in the perioperative period. The aim of this prospective observational study was to assess the impact of this type of protocol on the postoperative infection rate in patients undergoing elective craniotomy. METHODS: A total of 42 patients were prospectively enrolled in the study. Protocol included scheduled BGC monitoring in the perioperative period and rapid-acting insulin IV infusion when intraoperative SH was detected. The diagnosis of infection (wound, pulmonary, blood stream, urinary tract infection or central nervous system infection) was established according to CDC criteria within the first postoperative week. A previously enrolled group of patients with sporadic BGC monitoring and subcutaneous insulin injections for SH management was used as a control group. RESULTS: An infectious complication (i.e., pneumonia) was diagnosed only in one patient (2 %) in the prospective group. In comparison with the control group, a decrease in the risk of postoperative infection was statistically significant with OR = 0.08 [0.009 - 0.72] (p = 0.02). Implementation of the perioperative BGC monitoring and the correction protocol prevented both severe hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia with BGC < 70 mg/dl. CONCLUSION: Scheduled BGC monitoring and the use of low-dose insulin infusion protocol can decrease the postoperative infection rate in patients undergoing elective craniotomy. Future studies are needed to prove the causality of the implementation of such a protocol with an improved outcome.

Glycemic variability (GV) has been associated with an increased mortality rate among critically ill patients. The clinical outcomes of having less GV even with slight hyperglycemia are better than those having tight glycemic control but higher GV. Insulin infusion remains the preferred method to control stress hyperglycemia in critically ill patients. However, its impacts on GV and clinical outcomes in critically ill patients still need further investigation. This study intended to evaluate the impact of insulin infusion therapy (IIT) compared to the insulin sliding scale (ISS) on the extent of GV and explore its impact on the clinical outcomes for critically ill patients. A prospective, single-center observational cohort study was conducted at a tertiary academic hospital in Saudi Arabia between March 2021 and November 2021. The study included adult patients admitted to ICUs who received insulin for stress hyperglycemia management. Patients were categorized into two groups based on the regimen of insulin therapy during ICU stay (IIT versus ISS). The primary outcome was the GV between the two groups. Secondary outcomes were ICU mortality, the incidence of hypoglycemia, and ICU length of stay (LOS). A total of 381 patients were screened; out of them, eighty patients met the eligibility criteria. The distribution of patients having diabetes and a history of insulin use was similar between the two groups. The GV was lower in the IIT group compared to the ISS group using CONGA (- 0.65, 95% CI [- 1.16, - 0.14], p-value = 0.01). Compared with ISS, patients who received IIT had a lower incidence of hypoglycemia that required correction (6.8% vs 2.77%; p-value = 0.38). In contrast, there were no significant differences in ICU LOS and ICU mortality between the two groups. Our study demonstrated that the IIT is associated with decreased GV significantly in critically ill patients without increasing the incidence of severe hypoglycemia. There is no survival benefit with the use of the IIT. Further studies with larger sample size are required to confirm our findings and elaborate on IIT's potential effect in reducing ICU complications in critically ill patients.
