RESUMEN

In the two decades that have elapsed since the initial proposal of neuroendocrine cell hyperplasia of infancy (NEHI), several hundred cases have been reported and researched. However, a comprehensive analysis of research progress remains absent from the literature. The present article endeavors to evaluate the current progress of NEHI research and offer a reference for the clinical management of this condition.

BACKGROUND: We conducted this study to clarify the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) characteristics of lobular endocervical glandular hyperplasia (LEGH) and Nabothian cysts. METHODS: This study included 48 patients who underwent hysterectomy at our institution between 2016 and 2020 for suspected LEGH. Histopathological studies confirmed the presence of 25 Nabothian cysts and 23 cases of LEGH. We retrospectively analyzed five characteristic MRI findings: (1) located at the upper cervical canal, (2) positioned within the cervical stroma, (3) not circumscribing the cervical canal, (4) low- to iso-intensity on T1-weighted images (T1WI), and (5) "cosmos" or "microcystic" pattern. We compared the diagnostic accuracy of these findings for LEGH and Nabothian cysts using sensitivity, specificity, and predictive values. Combinations of findings were also calculated. RESULTS: The characteristics "cosmos" or "microcystic" pattern, lesion not circumscribing the cervical canal, and low/iso-intensity on T1WI had a sensitivity and specificity greater than 50%. The sensitivity was 73.9% and specificity 84.0% when a combination of "cosmos" or "microcystic" pattern and lesion not circumscribing the cervical canal was present. CONCLUSION: The coexistence of a "cosmos" or "microcystic" pattern and not circumscribing the cervical canal was the most characteristic finding that distinguished LEGH from Nabothian cysts. When neither of these findings is present, Nabothian cyst can be suspected.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal polyps that develop via the conventional adenoma-carcinoma sequence [e.g., tubular adenoma (TA)] often progress to malignancy and are closely associated with changes in the composition of the gut microbiome. There is limited research concerning the microbial functions and gut microbiomes associated with colorectal polyps that arise through the serrated polyp pathway, such as hyperplastic polyps (HP). Exploration of microbiome alterations associated with HP and TA would improve the understanding of mechanisms by which specific microbes and their metabolic pathways contribute to colorectal carcinogenesis. AIM: To investigate gut microbiome signatures, microbial associations, and microbial functions in HP and TA patients. METHODS: Full-length 16S rRNA sequencing was used to characterize the gut microbiome in stool samples from control participants without polyps [control group (CT), n = 40], patients with HP (n = 52), and patients with TA (n = 60). Significant differences in gut microbiome composition and functional mechanisms were identified between the CT group and patients with HP or TA. Analytical techniques in this study included differential abundance analysis, co-occurrence network analysis, and differential pathway analysis. RESULTS: Colorectal cancer (CRC)-associated bacteria, including Streptococcus gallolyticus (S. gallolyticus), Bacteroides fragilis, and Clostridium symbiosum, were identified as characteristic microbial species in TA patients. Mediterraneibacter gnavus, associated with dysbiosis and gastrointestinal diseases, was significantly differentially abundant in the HP and TA groups. Functional pathway analysis revealed that HP patients exhibited enrichment in the sulfur oxidation pathway exclusively, whereas TA patients showed dominance in pathways related to secondary metabolite biosynthesis (e.g., mevalonate); S. gallolyticus was a major contributor. Co-occurrence network and dynamic network analyses revealed co-occurrence of dysbiosis-associated bacteria in HP patients, whereas TA patients exhibited co-occurrence of CRC-associated bacteria. Furthermore, the co-occurrence of SCFA-producing bacteria was lower in TA patients than HP patients. CONCLUSION: This study revealed distinct gut microbiome signatures associated with pathways of colorectal polyp development, providing insights concerning the roles of microbial species, functional pathways, and microbial interactions in colorectal carcinogenesis.

Papillary endothelial hyperplasia (PEH) or Masson's tumor is a rare benign vascular tumor that usually appears in the soft tissues of the head and neck, trunk and extremities, being extremely rare in the breast. Its diagnosis can be a challenge, especially in the follow-up of patients with previous disease of breast carcinoma. We present the case of a 65-year-old patient, with a history of bilateral breast cancer and reconstruction with implants, who presented a Masson's tumor during follow-up. An ultrasound scan was performed, showing a well-circumscribed mass in the left breast, located in the posterior contour of the implant. Subsequently, magnetic resonance imaging (MR) depicted an enhancing tumor, without infiltration of adjacent structures. Finally, the definitive anatomopathological diagnosis was obtained after surgical excision.

BACKGROUND: Intimal hyperplasia is a normal adaptive feature of arteries in response to injuries, which include invasive vascular interventions. Its development limits the long-term success of bypass grafts. Various pharmacological agents have been successfully employed in experimental models to reduce the degree of intimal hyperplasia. In our study, we investigated the efficacy of dexamethasone in reducing intimal hyperplasia in rat abdominal aortas after partial transection and primary repair. METHODS: In this study, 20 Wistar Albino rats were randomly selected and divided into four groups to compare the effects of low- and high-dose dexamethasone on intima and media thickness compared to the control. Group A (n=5) was the control group, where only skin incision and laparotomy were performed. For Group B (n=5), a median laparotomy was performed, the abdominal aorta was partially transected, and repaired with an 8.0 prolene suture. Doses of 0.1 mg/kg and 0.2 mg/kg dexamethasone were administered in Group C (n=5) and Group D (n=5), respectively. After two weeks, all rats were euthanized, and the repaired abdominal aortas were excised and examined histopathologically. Intima and media thicknesses were measured using the 'Olympus AnalySIS 5' program (Olympus Corporation, Japan) after digital photos were taken. RESULTS: Based on the measurements, we demonstrated that after transection and repair of the abdominal aorta, the intima/media ratio was not significantly different between the low-dose dexamethasone and non-dexamethasone groups. The intima/media ratio was significantly lower in the high-dose dexamethasone group than in the non-dexamethasone and low-dose dexamethasone groups. CONCLUSION: After vascular interventions, dexamethasone treatment may reduce intimal hyperplasia and increase patency by providing vascular remodeling.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the efficacy and safety of ultrasound-guided percutaneous radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for the treatment of synovial hyperplasia in the knee joints of antigen-induced arthritis (AIA) model rabbits. METHODS: Forty Japanese large-eared white rabbits were divided into AIA and control groups. After successful induction of the AIA model, the knee joints were randomly assigned to RFA and non-RFA groups. The RFA group underwent ultrasound-guided RFA to treat synovial hyperplasia in the knee joint. Dynamic observation of various detection indices was conducted to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of the RFA procedure. RESULTS: Successful synovial ablation was achieved in the RFA group, with no intraoperative or perioperative mortality. Postoperative the circumference of the knee joint reached a peak before decreasing in the third week after surgery. The incidence and diameter of postoperative skin ulcers were not significantly different compared to the non-RFA group (p > .05). Anatomical examination revealed an intact intermuscular fascia around the ablated area in the RFA group. The ablated synovial tissue initially presented as a white mass, which subsequently liquefied into a milky white viscous fluid. Gross articular cartilage was observed, along with liquefied necrosis of the synovium on pathological histology and infiltration of inflammatory cells in the surrounding soft tissue. CONCLUSION: The experimental results demonstrated that ultrasound-guided RFA of the knee in the treatment of synovial hyperplasia in AIA model animals was both effective and safe.

Squamous cell lung cancer (SCLC) occurs as a result of dysregenerative changes in the bronchial epithelium: basal cell hyperplasia (BCH), squamous cell metaplasia (SM), and dysplasia. We previously suggested that combinations of precancerous changes detected in the small bronchi of patients with SCLC may reflect various "scenarios" of the precancerous process: isolated BCH→stopping at the stage of hyperplasia, BCH+SM→progression of hyperplasia into metaplasia, SM+dysplasia→progression of metaplasia into dysplasia. In this study, DNA methylome of various forms of precancerous changes in the bronchial epithelium of SCLC patients was analyzed using the genome-wide bisulfite sequencing. In BCH combined with SM, in contrast to isolated BCH, differentially methylated regions were identified in genes of the pathogenetically significant MET signaling pathway (RNMT, HPN). Differentially methylated regions affecting genes involved in inflammation regulation (IL-23, IL-23R, IL12B, IL12RB1, and FIS1) were detected in SM combined with dysplasia in comparison with SM combined with BCH. The revealed changes in DNA methylation may underlie various "scenarios" of the precancerous process in the bronchial epithelium.

BACKGROUND: Hemodialysis is a prevalent treatment for the end-stage chronic kidney disease (CKD) worldwide. The primary arteriovenous fistula (AVF), widely considered the optimal hemodialysis access method, fails to mature in up to two-thirds of the cases. The etiology of the early AVF failure, defined as thrombosis or inability to use within three months post-creation remains less understood, and is influenced by various factors including patient demographics, surgical techniques, and genetic predispositions. Neointimal hyperplasia is a primary histological finding in stenotic lesions leading to the AVF failure. However, there are insufficient data on the cellular phenotypes and the impact of the preexisting CKD-related factors. This study aims to investigate the histological, morphometric, and immunohistochemical alterations in the fistula vein, pre-, peri-, and post-early failure. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighty-nine stage 4-5 CKD patients underwent standard preoperative assessment, including the Doppler ultrasound, before a typical radio-cephalic AVF creation. Post-failure, a new AVF was created proximally. The vein specimens were collected during the surgery, processed, and analyzed for morphometric analyses and various cellular markers, including Vimentin, TGF, and Ki 67. RESULTS: The study enrolled 89 CKD patients, analyzing various aspects of their condition and AVF failures. The histomorphometric analysis revealed substantial venous luminal stenosis and varied endothelial changes. The immunohistologic analysis showed differential marker expressions pre- and post-AVF creation. CONCLUSION: This study highlights the complexity of the early AVF failures in CKD patients. The medial hypertrophy emerged as a significant preexisting lesion, while the postoperative analyses indicated a shift towards neointimal hyperplasia. The research underscores the nuanced interplay of vascular remodeling, endothelial damage, and cellular proliferation in the AVF outcomes.

A satisfactory treatment of an 18-year-old lady was reported with right combination-type condylar hyperplasia (CH) in active phase. The chin severely deviated to the left, with the right gonial angle locating at a lower level. Intraorally, the lower centre line shifted to the left, the scale of which reached the width of one lower incisor. The right molar relation was mesial. Right maxillary second molar over-erupted without contact to lower teeth. There had been 2.5-mm anterior open bite (AOB) before surgery (T1) due to the tongue-spitting habit. After judging the benefits and disadvantages of all treatment alternatives, the decision was made to perform a right condylectomy and post-surgery orthodontics. Before orthodontics (T2) when the chin was positioned centred, an asymmetrical open bite occurred, caused by pre-contact between the right maxillary and mandibular second molars. Meanwhile, the AOB at T2 became 11.5mm. Orthodontic-related treatment included four premolars extraction and intrusion of bilateral maxillary molars using four miniscrews. Finally, this treatment achieved a clinically centred chin with two gonial angles at the same level. Post-condylectomy, the large AOB was resolved, together with a bilateral neutral molar relationship and alignment of the incisor midlines. Besides, the resected right condyle was covered by a continuous cortex bone and returned to the glenoid fossa. In sum, a high-challenging combined-type CH case was accomplished with impressive improvement in facial and occlusal symmetry, thanks to condylectomy and post-surgery miniscrew-assisted orthodontics.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to examine the effect of age of obesity onset, sex, and their interaction on abdominal and femoral subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) morphology (degree of adipocyte hyperplasia or hypertrophy). METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we isolated adipocytes via collagenase digestion from abdominal and femoral SAT biopsies taken from male and female adults with childhood-onset obesity (CO; n = 8 males, n = 16 females) or adult-onset obesity (AO; n = 8 males, n = 13 females). Regional body composition was measured with dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry and a single-slice abdominal computed tomography scan. Mean adipocyte size was measured in abdominal and femoral SAT and was used to quantify morphology in android and gynoid subcutaneous fat, respectively. RESULTS: Abdominal SAT morphology was more hyperplastic in females with CO than females with AO (p = 0.004) but did not differ between males with CO and males with AO (p = 0.996). Conversely, femoral SAT morphology was more hypertrophic in males and females with CO than those with AO. CONCLUSIONS: Age of obesity onset appears to affect SAT morphology differently in the abdominal and femoral regions of male and female adults. Our findings challenge the notion that SAT is uniformly hyperplastic in CO and hypertrophic in AO.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is considered one of the most common cancers in the world. Serrated polyps were found to be precursor lesions for CRC. BRAF mutation (V600E) has been strongly linked to the development of these lesions. No previous study concerning BRAF immunohistochemical expression in serrated polyps- was done in Oman. The primary objective of our study was to assess the prevalence of BRAF (V600E) mutation in serrated colorectal polyps in the Omani population. The secondary objectives were to assess the prevalence of serrated polyps and their characteristic features: type, site and size as well as the relationship between BRAF (V600E) mutation and polyp type, site and size. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ninety-one hyperplastic polyps (HP) (76.5%), 24 sessile serrated lesions (SSL) (20.2%) and 4 cases of tubular adenomas with low grade dysplasia (3.4%) were studied for BRAF (V600E) immunohistochemical expression. No case of traditional serrated adenoma (TSA) was present. Control cases of craniopharyngioma and papillary thyroid carcinoma were included. RESULTS: BRAF (V600E) IHC was positive in 63 of the HP polyps (69.2%), 13 SSLs (54.2%) and none of the adenomatous polyps. The majority of positive polyps (75.0%) were ≤5 mm in size, 17.9% were 5-10 mm and 7.1% were ≥10 mm in size.  The majority of BRAF (V600E) positive polyps (68.1 %) were in the distal colon and 31.9 % were in the proximal colon. The majority of positive cases for BRAF (V600E) were showing multiple polyps (61.8 %). None of the tubular adenomas showed any BRAF (V600E) positivity. CONCLUSION: Serrated polyps are now well known for their potential to develop CRC. Immunohistochemistry is an easy and reproducible way to detect BRAF (V600E) mutation. Our study showed there is high prevalence (64.3%) of BRAF mutation in serrated polyps in the Omani population. The majority of these polyps- were HP and SSL; and ≤5 mm in size and located in the distal colon.

BACKGROUND: Salmonid species have followed markedly divergent evolutionary trajectories in their interactions with sea lice. While sea lice parasitism poses significant economic, environmental, and animal welfare challenges for Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) aquaculture, coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) exhibit near-complete resistance to sea lice, achieved through a potent epithelial hyperplasia response leading to rapid louse detachment. The molecular mechanisms underlying these divergent responses to sea lice are unknown. RESULTS: We characterized the cellular and molecular responses of Atlantic salmon and coho salmon to sea lice using single-nuclei RNA sequencing. Juvenile fish were exposed to copepodid sea lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis), and lice-attached pelvic fin and skin samples were collected 12 h, 24 h, 36 h, 48 h, and 60 h after exposure, along with control samples. Comparative analysis of control and treatment samples revealed an immune and wound-healing response that was common to both species, but attenuated in Atlantic salmon, potentially reflecting greater sea louse immunomodulation. Our results revealed unique but complementary roles of three layers of keratinocytes in the epithelial hyperplasia response leading to rapid sea lice rejection in coho salmon. Our results suggest that basal keratinocytes direct the expansion and mobility of intermediate and, especially, superficial keratinocytes, which eventually encapsulate the parasite. CONCLUSIONS: Our results highlight the key role of keratinocytes in coho salmon's sea lice resistance and the diverged biological response of the two salmonid host species when interacting with this parasite. This study has identified key pathways and candidate genes that could be manipulated using various biotechnological solutions to improve Atlantic salmon sea lice resistance.

Recognizing that enteric tuft cells can signal the presence of nematode parasites, we investigated whether tuft cells are required for the expulsion of the cestode, Hymenolepis diminuta, from the non-permissive mouse host, and in concomitant anti-helminthic responses. BALB/c and C57BL/6 mice infected with H. diminuta expelled the worms by 11 days post-infection (dpi) and displayed DCLK1+ (doublecortin-like kinase 1) tuft cell hyperplasia in the small intestine (not the colon) at 11 dpi. This tuft cell hyperplasia was dependent on IL-4Rα signalling and adaptive immunity, but not the microbiota. Expulsion of H. diminuta was slowed until at least 14 dpi, but not negated, in tuft cell-deficient Pou2f3-/- mice and was accompanied by delayed goblet cell hyperplasia and slowed small bowel transit. Worm antigen and mitogen evoked production of IL-4 and IL-10 by splenocytes from wild-type and Pou2f3-/- mice was not appreciably different, suggesting similar systemic immune reactivity to infection with H. diminuta. Wild-type and Pou2f3-/- mice infected with H. diminuta displayed partial protection against subsequent infection with the nematode Heligmosomoides bakeri. We speculate that, with respect to H. diminuta, enteric tuft cells are important for local immune events driving the rapidity of H. diminuta expulsion but are not critical in initiating or sustaining systemic Th2 responses that provide concomitant immunity against secondary infection with H. bakeri.

Objective: To investigate the value of serum dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS) in the differential diagnosis of primary bilateral macronodular adrenal hyperplasia (PBMAH) from nonfunctional adenoma tumors (NFA), adrenocortical adenoma (ADA) and Cushing's disease (CD). Methods: A cross-sectional study. The clinical data of 302 patients with PBMAH, NFA, ADA and CD diagnosed and treated in the First Medical Center of PLA General Hospital from January 2010 to June 2021 were retrospectively analyzed. Among them, 97 were males and 205 were females, aged (45.7±7.2) years. The area under receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to evaluate the DHEAS ratio (serum DHEAS value divided by the lower limit of normal reference range for the corresponding age and sex) and the 8∶00 adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) level in the differential diagnosis of PBMAH from NFA, ADA and CD. The maximum value of Youden index was cut-off value. Results: Among the 302 patients, 33 were in PBMAH group, 125 were in NFA group, 67 were in ADA group, and 77 were in CD group. The DHEAS ratio in CD group, NFA group, PBMAH group and ADA group decreased successively, with values of 6.34(4.44, 9.93), 3.37(2.24, 4.79), 1.14(1.04, 2.40) and 0.58(0.27, 1.05), respectively. There was statistical significance among all groups (all P<0.01). The area under the ROC curve for distinguishing PBMAH from NFA, ADA and CD were 0.803, 0.741 and 0.930, and the cut-off value were 2.59, 0.99 and 2.92, respectively. The sensitivity was 66.1%, 64.2% and 87.9%, respectively. The specificity was 81.8%, 81.2% and 85.7%. According to the level of 8∶00 ACTH, PBMAH was divided into ACTH-inhibited group (ACTH<2.2 pmol/L,n=18) and ACTH-non-inhibited group (ACTH≥2.2 pmol/L, n=15).The DHEAS ratio in ACTH-non-inhibited PBMAH group was higher than that in ACTH-inhibited PBMAH group(P<0.01).The area under ROC curve of DHEAS ratio for identifying ACTH-non-inhibited PBMAH and CD was 0.877, the cut-off value was 4.55, the sensitivity was 93.3%, and the specificity was 75.3%. If the DHEAS ratio combined with 8∶00 ACTH was used as a differential diagnostic indicator, the area under the ROC curve for distinguishing ACTH-non-inhibitory PBMAH from CD can reach 0.967, with the sensitivity of 100.0% and the specificity of 81.8%. Conclusions: DHEAS ratios is different in PBMAH, NFA, ADA and CD patients, which can assist in the differential diagnosis of PBMAH from NFA、ADA and CD patients, especially in the differential diagnosis of ACTH-non-inhibited PBMAH patients and CD patients.

OBJECTIVES: Our objective was to explore the safety and efficacy of a graphene oxide-loaded rapamycin-coated self-expandable metallic airway stent (GO@RAPA-SEMS) in a rabbit model. METHODS: The dip coating method was used to develop a GO@RAPA-SEMS and a poly(lactic-co-glycolic)-acid loaded rapamycin-coated self-expandable metallic airway stent (PLGA@RAPA-SEMS). The surface structure was evaluated using a scanning electronic microscope. The in vitro drug-release profiles of the 2 stents were explored and compared. In the animal study, a total of 45 rabbits were randomly divided into 3 groups and underwent 3 kinds of stent placements. Computed tomography was performed to evaluate the degree of stenosis at 1, 2 and 3 months after the stent operation. Five rabbits in each group were sacrificed after the computed tomography scan. The stented trachea and blood were collected for further pathological analysis and laboratory testing. RESULTS: The in vitro drug-release study revealed that GO@RAPA-SEMS exhibited a sudden release on the first day and maintained a certain release rate on the 14th day. The PLGA@RAPA-SEMS exhibited a longer sustained release time. All 45 rabbits underwent successful stent placement. Pathological results indicated that the granulation tissue thickness in the GO@RAPA-SEMS group was less than that in the PLGA@RAPA-SEMS group. The TUNEL and hypoxia-inducible factor-1α staining results support the fact that the granulation inhibition effect in the GO@RAPA-SEMS group was greater than that in the PLGA@RAPA-SEMS group. CONCLUSIONS: GO@RAPA-SEMS effectively inhibited stent-related granulation tissue hyperplasia.

To evaluate the effectiveness of the combination of acupoint embedding therapy and traditional Chinese medicine dialectical treatment regimen in improving clinical symptoms, promoting tumor regression, controlling adverse reactions and complications, and enhancing patient satisfaction by comparing and analyzing the clinical data of 120 breast tumor patients. One hundred twenty patients with breast cancer were divided into a treatment group (60 cases) and a control group (60 cases) according to different treatment plans. Patients in the treatment group received a combination of acupoint embedding therapy and traditional Chinese medicine dialectical treatment based on different time points of the menstrual cycle. Including the proportion of reduction in the number of breast masses, the proportion of reduction in mass size, changes in pain severity scores, tumor regression rate, regression time, incidence of adverse reactions and complications, and patient satisfaction. Statistical software was used to analyze the data to evaluate differences between the 2 groups. In terms of clinical symptoms, the proportion of reduction in the number of breast masses in the treatment group averaged 50%, significantly higher than the 25% in the control group; the proportion of reduction in mass size averaged 40%, also higher than the 15% in the control group; and the improvement in pain severity scores was also superior to the control group. Regarding tumor regression, the tumor regression rate in the treatment group reached 85%, with an average regression time of 6.2 weeks, both significantly better than the 55% and 9.8 weeks in the control group. In terms of adverse reactions and complications, the incidence rate in the treatment group was relatively low, and no serious adverse events occurred. Patient satisfaction surveys showed that the treatment group had significantly higher satisfaction with treatment effectiveness, treatment process, and physician service attitude compared to the control group. Based on clinical data from 120 breast tumor patients, the results of this study indicate that breast tumor patients treated with a specific treatment regimen have significant advantages in improving clinical symptoms, tumor regression, controlling adverse reactions and complications, and patient satisfaction. This treatment regimen has high clinical application value and deserves further promotion.

Excessive blood vessel wall thickening, known as intimal hyperplasia, can result from injury or inflammation and increase the risk of vascular diseases. Tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) plays key roles in tumor surveillance, autoimmune diseases, and apoptosis; however, its role in vascular stenosis remains controversial. Treatment with recombinant isoleucine zipper hexamerization domain soluble TRAIL (ILz(6):TRAIL) significantly inhibited the progression of neointimal hyperplasia (NH) induced by anastomosis of the carotid artery and jugular vein dose dependently, and adenovirus expressing secretable ILz(6):TRAIL also inhibited NH induced by balloon injury in the femoral artery of rats. This study demonstrated the preventive and partial regressive effects of ILz(6):TRAIL on anastomosis of the carotid artery and jugular vein- or balloon-induced NH.

Intravascular papillary endothelial hyperplasia (IPEH) represents an uncommon reactive endothelial hyperplastic proliferation. A 46-year-old man experienced increased volume in the right maxilla, elevation of the nasal ala, and swelling of the hard palate with a reddish hue for 3 months. Computed tomography revealed an expansive hypodense region and cortical bone destruction associated with an impacted supernumerary tooth and an endodontically treated tooth. Under the differential diagnoses of a radicular cyst, dentigerous cyst, and ameloblastoma, an exploratory aspiration and incisional biopsy were performed. This revealed the formation of blood vessels of various diameters lined by endothelium, forming intravascular papillae positive for CD-34. The definitive diagnosis was IPEH, and the patient was treated by embolization and surgery. Histological analysis confirmed the presence of IPEH associated with an odontogenic cyst. After 12 months of follow-up, no recurrence was observed. Also, we reviewed case reports of IPEH affecting the maxilla and mandible. Fourteen intraosseous cases were reported in the maxilla and mandible, with a preference for males and affecting a wide age range. Complete surgical excision was the treatment of choice, and recurrences were not reported. The pathogenesis of IPEH is controversial and may originate from trauma or inflammatory processes. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of an association of IPEH with an odontogenic cyst. The importance of IPEH in the differential diagnosis of intraosseous lesions in the jaws is emphasized, and preoperative semiotic maneuvers are needed to prevent surgical complications.

BACKGROUND: The transplantation of endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) has been shown to reduce neointimal hyperplasia following arterial injury. However, the efficacy of this approach is hampered by limited homing of EPCs to the injury site. Additionally, the in vivo recruitment and metabolic activity of transplanted EPCs have not been continuously monitored. METHODS: EPCs were labeled with indocyanine green (ICG)-conjugated superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) and subjected to external magnetic field targeting to enhance their delivery to a carotid balloon injury (BI) model in Sprague-Dawley rats. Magnetic particle imaging (MPI)/ fluorescence imaging (FLI) multimodal in vivo imaging, 3D MPI/CT imaging and MPI/FLI ex vivo imaging was performed after injury. Carotid arteries were collected and analyzed for pathology and immunofluorescence staining. The paracrine effects were analyzed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. RESULTS: The application of a magnetic field significantly enhanced the localization and retention of SPIONs@PEG-ICG-EPCs at the site of arterial injury, as evidenced by both in vivo continuous monitoring and ex vivo by observation. This targeted delivery approach effectively inhibited neointimal hyperplasia and increased the presence of CD31-positive cells at the injury site. Moreover, serum levels of SDF-1α, VEGF, IGF-1, and TGF-ß1 were significantly elevated, indicating enhanced paracrine activity. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings demonstrate that external magnetic field-directed delivery of SPIONs@PEG-ICG-EPCs to areas of arterial injury can significantly enhance their therapeutic efficacy. This enhancement is likely mediated through increased paracrine signaling. These results underscore the potential of magnetically guided SPIONs@PEG-ICG-EPCs delivery as a promising strategy for treating arterial injuries.
