This work aimed to develop gluten-free snacks such as crispbread based on beetroot pomace (Beta vulgaris L.) and golden linseed (Lini semen). Beetroot is attracting more and more consumer attention because of its nutritional and health properties. The use of beet pomace contributes to waste management. Linseed, known as a superfood with many health-promoting properties, was used to produce crispbreads as an alternative to cereals, which are allergens. Beetroot pomace and whole or ground linseed were used in different proportions to produce crispbread snacks. Chemical and physical analyses were performed including water activity, dry matter, betalains, and polyphenols content, as well as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). A sensory evaluation and microstructure observations were also performed. The obtained snacks were characterized by low water activity (0.290-0.395) and a high dry matter content (93.43-97.53%), which ensures their microbiological stability and enables longer storage. Beetroot pomace provided betalains-red (14.59-51.44 mg betanin/100 g d.m.) and yellow dyes (50.02-171.12 mg betanin/100 g d.m.)-while using linseed enriched the product with polyphenols (730-948 mg chlorogenic acid/100 g d.m.). FTIR analysis showed the presence of functional groups such as the following: -OH, -C-O, -COOH, and -NH. The most desired overall consumer acceptability was achieved for snacks containing 50% beetroot pomace and 50% linseed seeds. The obtained results confirmed that beetroot pomace combined with linseed can be used in the production of vegetable crispbread snacks.

Linusorbs (LO), cyclolinopeptides, are a group of cyclic hydrophobic peptides and considered a valuable by-product of flaxseed oil due to numerous health benefits. Currently applied acetone or methanol extraction could contaminate the feedstocks for further food-grade application. Using flaxseed cake as feedstock, this study established a practical method for preparing LO from pressed cake. Firstly, LO composition of 15 flaxseed cultivars was analyzed. Next, cold-pressed cake was milled and screened mechanically. The kernel and hull fractions were separated based on the disparity of their mechanical strength. Monitored by hyperspectral fluorescence, the LO-enriched kernel fraction separated from cold-pressed flaxseed cake was further used as feedstock for LO production. After ethanol extraction, partition, and precipitation, LOs were extracted from cold-pressed flaxseed cake with a purity of 91.4%. The proposed method could serve as feasible flaxseed cake valorization strategy and enable the preparation of other polar compounds such as flax lignan and mucilage.

Kynurenic acid (KYNA) is a bioactive compound exhibiting multiple actions and positive effects on human health due to its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties. KYNA has been found to have a beneficial effect on wound healing and the prevention of scarring. Despite notable progress in the research focused on KYNA observed during the last 10 years, KYNA's presence in flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) has not been proven to date. In the present study, parts of flax plants were analysed for KYNA synthesis. Moreover, eight different cultivars of flax seeds were tested for the presence of KYNA, resulting in a maximum of 0.432 µg/g FW in the seeds of the cultivar Jan. The level of KYNA was also tested in the stems and roots of two selected flax cultivars: an oily cultivar (Linola) and a fibrous cultivar (Nike). The exposure of plants to the KYNA precursors tryptophan and kynurenine resulted in higher levels of KYNA accumulation in flax shoots and roots. Thus, the obtained results indicate that KYNA might be synthesized in flax. The highest amount of KYNA (295.9 µg/g dry weight [DW]) was detected in flax roots derived from plants grown in tissue cultures supplemented with tryptophan. A spectroscopic analysis of KYNA was performed using the FTIR/ATR method. It was found that, in tested samples, the characteristic KYNA vibration bands overlap with the bands corresponding to the vibrations of biopolymers (especially pectin and cellulose) present in flax plants and fibres.

The objective of this study was to prepare biocomposites through the solution casting method followed by compression moulding in which bacterial cellulose (BC) deposited flax fabric (FF) produced through fermentation is coated with minimal amount of polylactic acid (PLA) and polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB). Biocomposites incorporated with 60 % of PLA or PHB (% w/w) show enhanced tensile strength. Cross-sectional morphology showed good superficial interaction of these biopolymers with fibres of FF thereby filling up the gaps present between the fibres. The tensile strength of biocomposites at 60 % PLA and 60 % PHB improved from 37.97 MPa (i.e., BC deposited FF produced in presence of honey) to 67.17 MPa and 56.26 MPa, respectively. Further, 0.25 % of nalidixic acid (NA) (% w/w) and 6 % of oleic acid (OA) (% w/w) incorporation into the biocomposites imparted prolonged antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The in vitro cytotoxicity of biocomposites was determined using L929 mouse fibroblast cells. The 3-(4,5-cime- thylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide cytotoxicity tests showed that the PHB derived biocomposites along with antibacterial compounds in it were non-toxic. In vitro degradation of biocomposites was measured for up to 8 weeks in the mimicked physiological environment that showed a gradual rate of degradation over the period.

Biocomposites developed using natural fibers serve as a sustainable alternative to synthetic composite materials. However, narrowing the performance gap between synthetic composites and biocomposites requires serious efforts. A promising approach is the modification of natural fibers using various chemical treatments. This paper investigates the potential of tannic acid (TA) treatment as a sustainable approach to enhance mechanical performance and reduce moisture absorption of flax fabric-reinforced biocomposites. The methodology involves the treatment of flax woven fabric with tannic acid, a naturally occurring polyphenolic compound, followed by the fabrication of biocomposite using a green epoxy matrix. The variables studied during treatment are TA concentration and processing time. Characterization of untreated and treated flax fabric and its composites was done using various analytical techniques such as FTIR spectroscopy, moisture absorption and mechanical testing (tensile strength, flexural strength, and impact resistance). FTIR spectroscopy of TA-treated flax confirmed attachment of aromatic rings and carbon double bond formation, thus serving for properties enhancement. The mechanical characterization of composites showed that properties are enhanced up to an optimum limit of concentration and processing time i.e., 1 % concentration and 30 min of processing. Moisture absorption of the TA-treated composite also reduced significantly as compared to untreated composites. These findings contribute towards the advancement in sustainable biocomposites and pave the way for their utilization in various applications.

Linusorbs (LOs), significantly influence oil quality and sensory properties of flaxseed oil. Trp-containing LOs exhibit distinct oxidative behavior when γ-tocopherol (γ-T) is present. Polar fractions of crude flaxseed oil were stripped via silica absorption, and reintroduced (LO and γ-T) separately into the oil matrix to investigate their interaction during storage. Compared with crude oil, LOs account for 18.49% reduction of p-anisidine value, while LOs with γ-T contributed to most of the endogenous antioxidant effect in crude oil. γ-T was found to suppress oxidation of Trp-containing LO at early stage (Met form), while facilitate oxidation while at their mid-stage (MetO form, Methionine sulfoxide). In vitro oxidation shows that CLD more likely cleaved into peptide fragments, while few products retain intact ring structures. LC-MS/MS analysis and silicon simulation revealed proximity between MetO and Trp residues, facilitating inter- or intra-molecular reactions and ring structure rupture. Remarkably, the presence of γ-T facilitate these phenomena.

Lignan, a beneficial constituent of Flaxseed (Linum usitatissimum L.) showed great interest in researchers because of its multiple functional properties. Nonetheless, a challenge arises due to the glycosidic structure of lignans, which the gut epithelium cannot readily absorb. Therefore, we screened 18 strains of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum, Lacticaseibacillus casei, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus, Pediococcus pentosaceus, Pediococcus acidilactici, and Enterococcus durans to remove glycosides from flaxseed lignan extract enzymatically. Among our findings, Lactiplantibacillus plantarum SCB0151 showed the highest activity of ß-glucosidase (8.91 ± 0.04 U/mL) and higher transformed efficiency of Secoisolariciresinol (SECO) (8.21 ± 0.13%). The conversion rate of Secoisolariciresinol diglucoside (SDG) and the generation rate of SECO was 58.30 ± 3.78% and 32.13 ± 2.78%, respectively, under the optimized conditions. According to the LC-HRMSMS analysis, SECO (68.55 ± 6.57 µM), Ferulic acid (FA) (32.12 ± 2.50 µM), and Coumaric acid (CA) (79.60 ± 6.21 µM) were identified in the biotransformation products (TP) of flaxseed lignan extract. Results revealed that the TP exhibited a more pronounced anti-inflammatory effect than the flaxseed lignan extract. SECO, FA, and CA demonstrated a more inhibitory effect on NO than that of SDG. The expression of iNOS and COX-2 was significantly suppressed by TP treatment in LPS-induced Raw264.7 cells. The secretion of IL-6, IL-2, and IL-1ß decreased by 87.09 ± 0.99%, 45.40 ± 0.87%, and 53.18 ± 0.83%, respectively, at 60 µg/mL of TP treatment. Given these data, the bioavailability of flaxseed lignan extract and its anti-inflammatory effect were significantly enhanced by Lactiplantibacillus plantarum SCB0151, which provided a novel approach to commercializing flaxseed lignan extract for functional food.

BACKGROUND: Flaxseed orbitides have health-promoting properties, particularly potent anti-cancer activity. However, flaxseed orbitides containing a methionine structure, such as [1-9-NαC]-linusorb B2 (CLB), are easily oxidized to sulfoxide ([1-9-NαC],[1-Rs,Ss-MetO]-linusorb-B2 (CLC)) and sulfone ([1-9-NαC], [1-MetO]-linusorb B2 (CLK)), with CLC having less anti-cancer ability than CLB. It is unclear why oxidized flaxseed orbitides are less effective against cancer than non-oxidized flaxseed orbitide. RESULTS: Non-oxidized ([1-9-NαC]-linusorb-B3 (CLA) and CLB) and oxidized (CLC and CLK) flaxseed orbitides were found to significantly upregulate the levels of pro-apoptotic proteins, including Bax/Bcl-2, CytoC, caspase-3, and caspase-8, in a dose-dependent manner, with non-oxidized flaxseed orbitides being more effective than oxidized flaxseed orbitides. Mechanically, the cellular absorption of non-oxidized flaxseed orbitides was higher than that of oxidized flaxseed orbitides. Moreover, the significant fluorescence quenching of DR4 protein by flaxseed orbitides (especially non-oxidized orbitides) indicated the formation of a DR4-orbitide complex. Molecular docking demonstrated that non-oxidized orbitides could easily dock into the active cavity of DR4 protein. Further blocking DR4 significantly reduced the ability of non-oxidized flaxseed orbitides to stimulate caspase-3 expression, whereas oxidized flaxseed orbitides retained this ability. CONCLUSION: Non-oxidized flaxseed orbitides are more effective against cancer than oxidized flaxseed orbitides due to higher cellular uptake and activation of the DR4-mediated death receptor signaling pathway. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

The study investigated and compared physicochemical, functional, antioxidant properties, phenolic profile and Maillard reaction products (MRP) of flaxseed flour (FF) and flaxseed cake flour (FCF) upon dry-air roasting (DaR) of flaxseeds at 140, 160 and 180 °C for 5 and 10 min. This information on FF and FCF is limited and has considerable gaps. The raw FF exhibited higher fat, ash, antioxidant and functional properties while lower protein than the FCF. Upon increasing DaR conditions, the ash and protein increased in FCF and decreased in FF. DaR at 180 °C for 10 min augmented water solubility index, ΔE, MRP, free rutin and syringic acid, bound epicatechin, gallic acid and syringic acid while lowered moisture, L*, b*, hue, chroma, potassium, iron, selenium, emulsion indexes, caffeic acid, flavonoids and free resveratrol in FF and FCF. In conclusion, DaR improves phenolic profile, antioxidant properties, MRP, water solubility and oil absorption capacity of FF and FCF.

Germinated flaxseed (Linum usitatissimum L.) is an essential potential food ingredient, but the major energy substances (proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates) metabolites and metabolic pathways are unknown. Comprehensive metabolomic analyses were performed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and high-performance liquid chromatography mass spectrometry on flaxseed from 0 to 7 d. Additionally, the critical metabolites pathways networks of three energy substances metabolites during flaxseed germination were exhibited. The results showed that arginine was the most active metabolite during germination, strongly associated with the arginine biosynthesis and arginine and proline metabolism pathways. Carbohydrates predominantly comprised sucrose on 0-3 d, which participated in galactose metabolism and starch and sucrose metabolism. The main flaxseed phospholipid molecules were phosphatidic acid, phosphatidylethanolamine, lysophosphatidic acid, and lysophosphatidylcholine during germination. This study underscores the paramount metabolic pathways in proteins, lipids and carbohydrates were arginine and proline metabolism, linoleic acid metabolism, arachidonic acid metabolism, and ascorbate and aldarate metabolism during germination.

Linseed represents a rich source of nutritional, functional and health-beneficial compounds. Nevertheless, the chemical composition and content of bioactive compounds may be quite variable and potentially affected by various factors, including genotype and the environment. In this study, the proximate chemical composition, lignans content and antioxidant potential of six experimentally grown linseed cultivars were assessed and compared. A diagonal cultivation trial in the University of South Bohemia Experimental Station in Ceské Budejovice, Czech Republic, was established in three subsequent growing seasons (2018, 2019 and 2020). The results showed that the cultivar and growing conditions influenced most studied parameters. The lack of precipitation in May and June 2019 negatively affected the seed yield and the level of secoisolariciresinol diglucoside but did not decrease the crude protein content, which was negatively related to the oil content. The newly developed method for lignans analysis allowed the identification and quantification of secoisolariciresinol diglucoside and matairesinol. Their content correlated positively with the total polyphenol content and antioxidant assays (DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activity), indicating the significant contribution to the biofunctional properties of linseed. On the other hand, we did not detect minor linseed lignans, pinoresinol and lariciresinol. The results of this study showed the importance of cultivar and growing conditions factors on the linseed chemical composition and the lignans content, determining its nutritional and medicinal properties.

The present study demonstrates thein vivosoft tissue regenerative potential of flax seed mucilage (FSM) reinforced collagen aerogels in Wistar rats. The physiochemical, mechanical, and thermal properties were significantly improved upon the incorporation of flax mucilage into collagen when compared to the native collagen scaffold. In addition, the functional group of flax mucilage notably contributed to a better anti-oxidative potential than the control collagen. The flax mucilage-reinforced collagen at 4 mg ml-1concentration showed a 2-fold increase in porosity compared to native collagen. The tensile strength of native collagen, 2 mg ml-1, and 4 mg ml-1FSM reinforced collagen was 5.22 MPa, 9.76 MPa, and 11.16 MPa, respectively, which indicated that 2 mg ml-1and 4 mg ml-1FSM showed an 87% and 113% percentage increase respectively in tensile strength compared to the native collagen control. FSM-reinforced biomatrix showed 97% wound closure on day 15 post-wounding, indicating faster healing than controls, where complete healing occurred only on day 21. The mechanical properties of skin treated with FSM-reinforced collagen scaffold post-healing were considerably better than native collagen. The histological and immunohistochemistry analysis also showed complete restoration of wounded tissue like intact normal skin. The findings paved the way for the development of collagen-polysaccharide mucilage wound dressing materials and their further application in skin tissue engineering.

Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is an endocrinological disorder aroused due to hormonal disturbances. It is characterized by anovulation due to an excess of androgen and estrogen hormones, thus leading to the formation of multiple cysts, imposing life-threatening conditions. This manuscript aimed to introduce a natural estrogen receptor (ESR) inhibitors that can provide protection against PCOS. The computational analysis of Linum usitatissimum seeds  compounds against ESR alpha receptor was performed, and the binding affinities of the ligand compounds and receptor proteins were scrutinized. Nine lignin compounds were docked, and the results were compared with that of reference estrogen receptor inhibitors, clomiphene, and tamoxifen. The binding affinity scores for pinoresinol, lariciresinol, secoisolariciresinol, and matairesinol were -10.67, -10.66, -10.91, and -10.60 kcal mol-1 , respectively. These were comparable to the binding affinity score of reference compounds -11.406 kcal mol-1 for clomiphene and -10.666 kcal mol-1 for tamoxifen. Prime MM-GBSA studies showcased that Linum usitatissimum seeds compounds exhibit significant efficacy and efficiency towards receptor protein. Moreover, MD-simulation studies were performed and the results depict that the lignin compounds form stable complexes at 300 K throughout the simulation time. For further clarity, in-vitro experiments were carried out. The results exhibit the decline in cell proliferation in a concentration-dependent manner by extract 1 (ethyl acetate) EX1 and extract 2 (petroleum ether) EX2. Hence, providing evidence regarding the anti-estrogenic activity of the sample extracts. Collectively, these results showed that flax seed can reduce the levels of estrogen, which can induce ovulation and prevent cyst formation, and ultimately can provide protection against PCOS.

This research aimed to create Pickering emulsions using modified soy protein isolate (SPI) as a stabilizer and flaxseed-derived diglyceride (DAG) as an oil phase. The SPI was modified through a process involving both heating and ultrasound treatment. The result indicated that the droplet size of emulsions increased with the increase in oil content (p < 0.05). For instance, the largest droplet size (23 µm) was observed at an oil-to-SPI dispersion ratio of 4:1 ratio (φ = 80), whereas the smallest droplet size (6.39 µm) was noticed at the 1:4 ratio. During the 7-day storage period, the emulsions with a 4:1 ratio (φ = 80) showed the lowest droplet size increase (from 23 µm to 25.58 µm). In contrast, the emulsions with a 1:1 ratio displayed the highest increase (from 19.39 µm to 74.29 µm). Creaming index results revealed that emulsions with a 4:1 ratio (φ = 80) showed no signs of creaming and phase separation than all other treatments (p < 0.05). Backscattering fluctuations (ΔBS) and turbiscan stability index (TSI) showed that emulsions with 4:1, 2:1, and 1:1 oil-to-SPI dispersion ratios had consistent ΔBS curves with higher and TSI curves with lower values. Optical microscopy, confocal laser scanning, and cryo-scanning electron microscopy revealed that emulsions with oil-to-SPI dispersion ratios of 4:1 and 2:1 had well-organized structures with no visible coalescence. Macromorphological and microrheological investigations demonstrated that emulsions with 80% oil content had the highest viscosity, both moduli, elasticity index, macroscopic viscosity index, and the lowest fluidity index and solid-liquid balance values. Moreover, these emulsions were more resistant to centrifugation and storage environments. In conclusion, the study determined that flaxseed-derived DAG-based high internal phase Pickering emulsions (φ = 80) had superior stability, improved viscoelasticity, and better rheological properties.

Secoisolariciresinol diglucoside (SDG) and tracheloside (TCL) are the main lignan components of flaxseed cake and safflower seed cake, which are by-products of oil extraction. Both SDG and TCL are metabolized into mammalian lignan enterolactone (EL) with the involvement of intestinal bacteria. In this research, we evaluated the anti-osteoporosis effects of SDG and the in vivo metabolites EL and enterodiol (ED) prepared in our previous work, as well as the newly isolated chemical constituents from safflower seed, including TCL, the lactone ring opening product of TCL (OTCL) and two alkaloids on the alloxan-induced zebrafish model. All the compounds showed significant anti-osteoporosis effects at 80 µM, with p < 0.05 for EL and p < 0.001 for other compounds compared with the model. SDG and TCL showed the most significant and concentration-dependent effects, with p < 0.001 compared with model at 20 µM. The alkaloids, N-coumaroylserotonin glucoside and N-feruloylserotonin glucoside, also showed anti-osteoporosis at 20 µM with p < 0.01, whereas EL, ED, and OTCL showed no significant effects. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction revealed that SDG and TCL upregulated the expression of osteogenic genes Runx2, SP7, OPG, Col1a1a, Alp, ON, OPN, and OCN in alloxan-treated zebrafish. The in vivo metabolite of lignans, EL, showed significant anti-inflammatory effect (p < 0.01) at 20 µM, which might also help to combat osteoporosis and other complications caused by excessive immune response in the body. The results provided scientific data for using the oil extraction by-products as sources of anti-osteoporosis compounds. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: This study found that lignans in flaxseed cake and safflower seed cake exhibited anti-osteoporosis effects by upregulating the expression of osteogenic genes, making the oil extraction by-products sources of anti-osteoporosis compounds.

In this study, 16S rRNA sequencing and GC-MS (gas chromatography-mass spectrometry) techniques were employed to examine the relationship between bacterial succession and metabolite alterations during the dew retting process of flax. The results indicated that the addition of compound microbial agents may affect the production and transformation of metabolites by re-establishing bacterial communities and promoting the degradation of pectic substances and the release of metabolites, and the best retting effect was achieved under the combined addition (BA). In addition, Chryseobacterium, Bacillus, and Pseudoonas were closely associated with the production of fatty acids and alcohols; the addition of compound microbial agents increased the content of critical metabolites while decreasing the environmental pollutant bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate. In summary, the addition of compound microbial agents can positively regulate the retting process of flax, shorten the retting cycle, improve the quality of flax fibre, and reduce the pollution of the environment.

Flaxseed (Linum usitatissimum L) is an ancient perennial plant species regarded as a multipurpose plant owing to its richness in omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) including α-linolenic acid (ALA). The extensive biochemical analysis of flaxseed resulted in the identification of its bioactive, i.e., lignans with potential application in the improvement of human health. Flaxseed oil, fibers, and lignans exert potential health benefits including reduction of cardiovascular disease, atherosclerosis, diabetes, cancer, arthritis, osteoporosis, and autoimmune and neurological disorders that have led to the diversification of flaxseed plant applications. This comprehensive review focuses on flaxseed oil as the major product of flaxseed with emphasis on the interrelationship between its chemical composition and biological effects. Effects reviewed include antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anticancer, antiulcer, anti-osteoporotic, cardioprotective, metabolic, and neuroprotective. This study provides an overview of flaxseed oil effects with the reported action mechanisms related to its phytochemical composition and in comparison, to other PUFA-rich oils. This study presents the most updated and comprehensive review summarizing flaxseed oil's health benefits for the treatment of various diseases.

BACKGROUND: Factors such as variety, genetics, soil structure and plant diseases affect the oil amount and properties of flaxseed. By applying heat and various extraction treatments to flaxseed, the storage ability of the seed is increased by the removal of moisture, and the stability of phytochemicals in the seed against heat can be determined. RESULTS: Total carotenoid and phenol of flaxseeds changed from 0.13 (control) and 0.61 mg g-1 (120 °C) to 202.64 (control and 90 °C) and 225.69 mg 100 g-1 (120 °C), respectively. While total flavonoid of flaxseed roasted at different temperatures varied between 636.0 (90 °C) and 786.00 mg 100 g-1 (120 °C), antioxidant activity values for raw and roasted flaxseeds between 59.32% (control) and 68.64% (120 °C) were recorded. Oil content of seeds changed between 34.07 and 42.57% (P < 0.05). Viscosity of flaxseed oil extracted using different systems was between 31.95 (cold-pressed; control) and 36.00 mPa s (ultrasonic; 120 °C). The dominant phenolics of flaxseeds were identified as isorhamnetin, resveratrol, quercetin, catechin, apigenin-7-glucoside and campherol. The oils of flaxseeds contained 55.27-58.23 linolenic, 17.40-18.91 oleic, 14.03-14.84 linoleic and 4.97-5.37 palmitic acids, depending on extraction method and roasting temperature. CONCLUSION: Roasting and oil extraction methods did not have a significant effect on free acidity, but was found to affect peroxide value. The predominant phenolic constituents of flaxseed samples were isorhamnetin, resveratrol, quercetin, catechin, apigenin-7-glucoside and campherol, respectively. The major fatty acids of flaxseed oil were determined as linolenic, oleic, linoleic and palmitic. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

There has been a shift from use of petroleum-based plastics, causing serious environmental pollution, towards innovative and biodegradable edible packaging. The present study documents the development of composite edible films based on the flaxseed gum (FSG) modified by the incorporation of betel leaf extract (BLE). The films were assessed for physicochemical, mechanical, morphological, thermal, antimicrobial and structural characteristics. Scanning electron microscopy images indicated that the roughness decreased with an increase in BLE concentration. The water vapor permeability of the FSG-BLE films ranged from 4.68 to 1.59 × 10-9 g s- 1 m- 2 Pa- 1, lower than that of the control sample (6.77 × 10-9 g s- 1 m- 2 Pa- 1). The BLE4 (containing 10 % BLE) films had the highest tensile strength of 32.46 MPa compared to the control sample (21.23 MPa). Similarly, EAB and seal strength of the films incorporated with BLE were ameliorated. X-ray diffraction pattern and FTIR illustrated the shift of amorphous to crystalline behavior and a significant interaction among the BLE and FSG functional groups. Furthermore, the thermal stability of the treated films was not affected significantly however, they showed improved antimicrobial activity with the highest diameter of inhibition zone in the BLE4 sample. This study concluded that the FSG-BLE composite films (BLE4 in particular) can be considered as novel packaging material for food conservation coupled with a potential to enhance the shelf life of perishable food products.

Although many efforts have been made to characterize the functional properties of flaxseed, knowledge concerning the properties of insoluble and soluble dietary fibers in flaxseed is still limited. Here, insoluble and soluble dietary fibers were extracted from flaxseed cake-a valuable resource that has not been fully exploited. Subsequently, their monosaccharide compositions, structural properties, and anti-obesity effects in male mice were characterized. The anti-obesity effects of flaxseed cake insoluble dietary fiber (FIDF), flaxseed cake soluble dietary fiber (FSDF), and FIDF combined with FSDF in diet-induced obese mice were investigated in our study. Supplementation with FSDF alone or FIDF and FSDF together lowered the fat accumulation, improved the serum lipid profile, increased the basal metabolism, and improved the gut microbiota of obese mice. Supplementation with FIDF and FSDF together significantly enriched the abundance of g_Akkermansia and g_Bifidobacterium, which are negatively associated with obesity. Supplementation with FIDF alone improved the liver lipid profile, raised the basal metabolism, and enhanced the short-chain fatty acid levels in the guts of the mice. In conclusion, our results collectively support the therapeutic potential of FIDF and FSDF in obesity treatment and indicate that FIDF and FSDF play different roles in the process of obesity treatment. Furthermore, our results provide critical information for flaxseed cake resource exploitation.
