OBJECTIVE: To highlight some of the legendary figures in the medical field who have paved the path of thoracic surgery today. METHODS: We reviewed historical articles and landmark studies published in anesthesiology, pulmonology, and thoracic surgery, and summarized them as they pertain to current practice. RESULTS: Throughout our article, we have attempted to chronologically depict how our field has evolved, starting from the development of the stethoscope to reconstructing the esophagus using an extracorporeal tube to minimally invasive complex surgeries that we practice today. CONCLUSIONS: We hope that our article can inspire the young minds to further grow the field and take it to higher levels.

The ways in which thoracoscopy has evolved wonderfully illustrate how a diagnostic and therapeutic technique can transcend a particular medical or surgical subspecialty. In this review, an in-depth history is provided to enable readers to better understand the nature of minimally invasive endoscopic pleural imaging techniques.

In 1910 Jacobaeus described a procedure to which he referred as "Thorakoskopie." As a consequence, he is credited with having been the first to undertake an endoscopic exploration of the thorax. However, a published report by Gordon demonstrates that thoracoscopy was performed about 50 years earlier. Additionally in French, at least, the term "thoracoscopie" was well known long before Jacobaeus, although perhaps with a different meaning.

Equine surgery continues to benefit from advances in endoscopic surgical techniques. Much of what we have learned in equine endoscopy comes from techniques used in humans. Descriptions of the normal anatomy of the standing horse and advances in instrumentation have improved our ability to perform laparoscopic surgery in standing and dorsally recumbent horses. This article describes the history of laparoscopy and available instrumentation.
