RESUMO

The suggested novel rare-earth doped bismuth calcium cobaltites Bi2Ca2-2xSmxLaxCoO6 (x = 0.000-0.075) were synthesized by a co-precipitation route. XRD was utilized for structural information. SEM and EDX were used for microstructural and elemental analysis. AC conductivities (σac) were measured at temperatures of 100-500 °C. The σac of all synthesized samples increased as the temperature increased, indicating that they are semi-conductive. The conduction process of all the synthesized samples was examined using Jonscher's power law. The spreading factor and relaxation time of all the synthesized samples were studied using nonlinear Debye fitting. At a high temperature of 500 °C, the dielectric curve showed anomalous behaviour that was related to the negative values of the dielectric constant at 500 kHz-3 MHz. The studied (Sm-La)-doped samples showed higher values of the dielectric constant (1.03 × 108). The Cole-Cole plot used in the impedance investigation reveals that as the temperature rises, the diameter of the arcs decreases, implying a drop in impedance and rises in conductivity. The growing trend of DC electrical conductivity with temperature depicts the semi-conductive nature of the synthesized materials.

RESUMO

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), a potential public health issue, is a huge challenge for the advanced scientific realm to solve. Chemodynamic therapy (CDT) based on the Fenton reaction emerged as a state-of-the-art therapeutic modality to treat GBM. However, crossing the blood-brain barrier (BBB) to reach the GBM is another endless marathon. In this review, the physiology of the BBB has been elaborated to understand the mechanism of crossing these potential barriers to treat GBM. Moreover, the designing of Fenton-based nanomaterials has been discussed for the production of reactive oxygen species in the tumor area to eradicate the cancer cells. For effective tumor targeting, biological nanomaterials that can cross the BBB via neurovascular transport channels have also been explored. To overcome the neurotoxicity caused by inorganic nanomaterials, the use of smart nanoagents having both enhanced biocompatibility and effective tumor targeting ability to enhance the efficiency of CDT are systematically summarized. Finally, the advancements in intelligent Fenton-based nanosystems for a multimodal therapeutic approach in addition to CDT are demonstrated. Hopefully, this systematic review will provide a better understanding of Fenton-based CDT and insight into GBM treatment.

RESUMO

To evaluate the incidence of tobacco-related oral mucosal lesions in the adult population visiting ENT-OPD at Shri Maharaja Gulab Singh Hospital, GMC Jammu, India. From December 2021 to November 2022 we attempted to compile the prevalence of tobacco-induced oral mucosal lesions in the adult population visiting ENT-OPD at Shri Maharaja Gulab Singh Hospital Jammu, India. The study included a total of 400 patients of various age groups. The patients were divided as current users with a habit of tobacco consumption for atleast 6 months and ex-users who had used any form of tobacco in their lifetime for a minimum of 6 months but had abstained the use since last 1 year. Age group, gender, employment, type of tobacco use, site of placement of tobacco in the oral cavity, frequency and duration of use, and the types of mucosal lesions were all documented on a standardized interviewer-based questionnaire. The oral mucosal lesions were diagnosed in accordance with international recommendations. Males (55%) had somewhat more oral mucosal lesions than females (45%). Oral submucous fibrosis was found in 110 individuals, followed by leukoplakia in 102, erythroplakia in 14, tobacco pouch keratosis in 81, tobacco induced melanosis in 82 patients and malignancy in 11 patients. 107 conventional smokers (26.75%), 254 patients using smokeless tobacco (63.5%) and 39 patients using combined form of tobacco (9.75%) showed oral mucosal lesions. The most prevalent site of lesions was the labial comissure, which showed 117 lesions (29.25%), followed by 114 lesions on the buccal mucosa (28.5%), and 99 lesions (24.75%) on buccal sulcus. Gingiva showed 41 lesions (10.25%), tongue had 15 entities (3.75%) and palate had 14 (3.5%). The most frequent oral mucosal lesion was shown to be oral submucous fibrosis, followed by leukoplakia. Smokeless tobacco was the most commonly used tobacco product. This study emphasizes the need of routine evaluation of the oral mucosa and the need for patients to be urged to stop this hazardous behavior.

RESUMO

In this investigation, we successfully synthesized magnetic FeOx nanosphere catalysts with mixed-valence and high operational stability through the pyrolysis of a hybrid material containing polyferrocenlyphosphazene with coordinating heteroatoms (N, P, O). We evaluated the degradation performance of these catalysts using the peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation process against four different phenolic compounds, namely phenol, 4-nitrophenol, 2,4-dinitrophenol, and 2,4,5-trinitrophenol. Our results demonstrate the significant role of FeOx in the degradation process. The presence of mixed iron species, such as ferric iron, zero-valent iron, and iron oxides, activated PMS to generate radicals. Additionally, the heteroatoms facilitated the anchoring and dispersion of FeOx nanospheres while also breaking the inertness of the carbon structure. Notably, the FeOx-800 catalyst exhibited a maximum degradation activity of 98% for phenol, surpassing its counterparts. Electron paramagnetic resonance and free radical scavenging experiments confirmed that singlet oxygen (1O2) is the principal reactive oxygen species (ROS) that leads to the oxidative breakdown of phenolic compounds. This study introduces new concepts for designing Fenton-like catalysts incorporating heteroatoms into the carbon matrix. Due to their low cost and non-toxicity, these catalysts have recently received a great deal of attention for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation and environmental remediation.

RESUMO

Among the three main divergent lineages of gray wolf (Canis lupus), the Holarctic lineage is the most widespread and best-studied, particularly in North America and Europe. Less is known about Tibetan (also called Himalayan) and Indian wolf lineages in southern Asia, especially in areas surrounding Pakistan where all three lineages are thought to meet. Given the endangered status of the Indian wolf in neighboring India and unclear southwestern boundary of the Tibetan wolf range, we conducted mitochondrial and genome-wide sequencing of wolves from Pakistan and Kyrgyzstan. Sequences of the mitochondrial D-loop region of 81 wolves from Pakistan indicated contact zones between Holarctic and Indian lineages across the northern and western mountains of Pakistan. Reduced-representation genome sequencing of 8 wolves indicated an east-to-west cline of Indian to Holarctic ancestry, consistent with a contact zone between these two lineages in Pakistan. The western boundary of the Tibetan lineage corresponded to the Ladakh region of India's Himalayas with a narrow zone of admixture spanning this boundary from the Karakoram Mountains of northern Pakistan into Ladakh, India. Our results highlight the conservation significance of Pakistan's wolf populations, especially the remaining populations in Sindh and Southern Punjab that represent the highly endangered Indian lineage.

RESUMO

Conductive agro-industrial wastes as accelerants in the anaerobic digestion (AD) of organic waste is a good technique for developing a rural circular economy, such as producing bioenergy and biofertilizer. This study disclosed the a role of sugar cane bagasse ash (SCBA) in enhancing the bioenergy (biogas) yield and digestate fertility via anaerobic co-digestion (AcoD) of buffalo dung (BD) and vegetable residue (VR) under mesophilic conditions (37 á´¼C). Firstly, an optimal BD/VR ratio (1:3) was determined based on biogas yield by introducing five different BD/VR ratios (1:0, 3:1, 1:1, 1:3, and 0:1) into AcoD systems. Secondly, the biogas yield was increased further by adding SCBA at five different concentrations (0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, and 2 wt%). Experimental results disclosed that the 1.5 wt% of SCBA gave the highest cumulative biogas yield (153.67 mL/g VS), COD removal rate (31.18%), and fertility (5.08%). Moreover, a framework is suggested to understand the role of SCBA in the enhanced DIET mechanism. This work documents an environmentally friendly and economical technique for developing a rural circular bioeconomy via the AD of organic agro-waste.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To determine the factors affecting the frequency and severity of oral mucositis are following hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive study. Place and Duration of the Study: Armed Forces Bone Marrow Transplant Centre Rawalpindi, from September 2020 to February 2022. METHODOLOGY: Patients who underwent allogenic stem cell transplantation were enrolled. Patients were analysed based on history and examination for oral mucositis (OM) as per the WHO mucositis scale, from the start of conditioning chemotherapy till discharge, total duration of mucositis and type of medication were noted. Its association with risk factors like age, gender, conditioning chemotherapy, methotrexate (MTX) for GVHD prophylaxis, and prior history of irradiation was determined. RESULTS: Mean age of the 72 transplant recipients was 21.9 ± 14 years, with 48 males and 24 females. The common underlying diseases were beta-thalassemia major (30.6%, n=22), acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (n=15, 20.8%), aplastic anaemia (n=10, 13.9%), and multiple myeloma (n=8, 11.1%). The frequency of mucositis in those aged under 15 years was 79.3% (n=23) and in those older than 15 years was 74.4% (n=32). Frequency of mucositis was statistically significant in patients who received myeloablative conditioning regimen (85% vs. 20%, p <0.01), and who had prophylactic. MTX (91% vs. 48%, p<0.01) and who had prior craniospinal (CSI) radiation (100% vs. 70.2%, p=0.01). There was no statistical significance between stem cell dose (CD34/TNC) and mucositis. Severity of mucositis was significantly greater in Allogenic vs. auto HSCT (p=0.04). All the patients with mucositis required analgesics for pain management. CONCLUSION: Oral mucositis is a common but potentially debilitating complication of stem cell transplant, requiring opioid analgesia in a significant number of cases. Myeloablative conditioning, prophylactic MTX, and prior CSI are significantly associated with mucositis in transplant patients. KEY WORDS: Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), Oral Mucositis, Myeloablative conditioning, Methotrexate, Analgesia.

RESUMO

The objective of this paper is to investigate the impact of sustainability reporting (SR) quality on the corporate financial performance (CFP) of initial public offering (IPO) in Malaysia. This research applies the OLS and WLS regressions through content analysis of annual reports. The data was collected from Datastream, where 131 IPOs listed companies on Bursa Malaysia between 2007 and 2017. The findings indicate a positive and negative association between SR and its components with CFP. It is found that there is a negative and significant association between the SR characteristics of employees and products with CFP. However, it was discovered that the societal and environmental components have a significantly positive association with CFP. This finding shows that SR practices might be seen as an attempt to enhance IPO performance. The findings can facilitate financial institutions and regulatory agencies in driving responsibility on the part of companies regarding SR issues. The firms should involve SR practices in their SR decisions. Thus, this study emphasises the significance of combining social and organisational activities.

RESUMO

Here, the key tasks to be accomplished are selective precious metal recovery from e-wastewater and their conversion into valuable catalysts for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. In this regard, we developed a hybrid material using 3D functional graphene foam and copper para-phenylenedithol (Cu-pPDT) MOF. The prepared hybrid showed a supercilious recovery of 92-95% even up to five cycles for Au(III) and Pd(II), which can be viewed as a reference for both the 2D graphene and the MOFs family. The outstanding performance has been attributed principally to the impact of diverse functionality as well as the unique morphology of 3D graphene foam, which provided a wide range of surface area and additional active sites in the hybrid frameworks. To prepare the surface-loaded metal nanoparticle catalysts, the sorbed samples recovered after precious metal extraction were calcined at 800 °C. The viability of the developed catalysts for the breakdown of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) via PMS activation was investigated. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy (EPR) and experiments with radical scavengers suggest that sulfate and hydroxyl radicals are the main reactive species involved in the breakdown of 4-NP. This is because the active graphitic carbon matrix and the exposed precious metal and copper active sites work together in a way that is more effective.

RESUMO

Anaerobic co-digestion (AcoD) with suitable substrate ratios may have the potential to improve biogas process and could play a better role in nutrient management for biocircular economy. The goal of this study was to enhance biogas yield from AcoD of cow manure (CM) and canteen food waste (CFW), and pertinent co-digestion of suitable substrate ratios for nutrient management i. e NPK from linear to biocircular economy, using ruminant intestinal fluid as a source of inoculum. A mesophilic (37 ± 1 °C) laboratory-scale AcoD with varying CFW/CM ratios of (0:1, 1:4, 2:3, 1:1, 3:2, 4:1, and 1:0) based on wet weight was performed. The AcoD systems of different CFW/CM ratios were evaluated with a loading rate of 400 g/L in the presence of 100 g cow intestinal fluid (CIF) inoculation. All experimental AcoD systems yielded greater biogas (147-300 cm3/g VS) than the mono-digestion in which only CM (135 cm3/g VS) and CFW (146 cm3/g VS) were digested anaerobically. The AcoD system of CFW/CM with 4:1 showed the highest biogas yield (300 cm3/g VS), and VS and COD reduction rate (39.51% and 65.15%, respectively), and nutrient contents (6.53%). Moreover, the experiment results were verified by modified Gompertz model. This work provided a window of opportunity to examine the anaerobic co-digestion technology beyond biogas production and to put the current low-cost technology to use for nutrient management and as a better component of the biocircular economy for agriculture in Pakistan in order to achieve sustainable development goals.

RESUMO

The increasing worldwide prevalence of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) highlights the need to understand the complex relationships between lipid abnormalities and elevated cardiovascular risk. This review thoroughly investigates the complex terrain of lipid abnormalities, highlighting their crucial significance in developing CVDs. Dyslipidemia, which is closely connected to atherosclerosis, is a significant risk factor for CVDs, including coronary artery disease, myocardial infarction, and stroke. This review thoroughly examines the intricate relationship between lipoproteins, cholesterol metabolism, and the inflammatory cascade, providing a detailed comprehension of the mechanisms that contribute to atherogenic processes. An extensive analysis of the occurrence and distribution of lipid diseases worldwide indicates a concerning high frequency, which calls for a reassessment of public health approaches. Dyslipidemia is caused by a combination of genetic predispositions, lifestyle factors, and metabolic abnormalities, as supported by significant data. Moreover, investigating different types of lipoproteins and their specific functions in the development of atherosclerosis provides insight into the complex causes of CVDs. In addition to conventional lipid profiles, newly identified biomarkers and advanced imaging techniques are being carefully examined for their ability to improve risk classification and treatment strategies' effectiveness. From a critical perspective, the review thoroughly examines the current state of lipid-modifying medicines, specifically statins, fibrates, and new therapeutic approaches. The text discusses the emerging concept of precision medicine, which involves tailoring treatment approaches to individuals based on their genetic and molecular characteristics. This approach has the potential to improve treatment outcomes. In addition, this study critically assesses the effects of lifestyle changes and nutritional interventions on lipid homeostasis, offering a comprehensive view of preventive strategies. This review consolidates current viewpoints on lipid diseases and their complex correlation with cardiovascular risk. This review contributes to the ongoing cardiovascular disease prevention and management dialogue by clarifying the molecular mechanisms, exploring new therapeutic options, and considering broader societal implications.

RESUMO

A novel, metal-free electrode based on heteroatom (S, N, P, O)-doped carbon nanoplates (SNPO-CPL) modifying lead pencil graphite (LPG) has been synthesized by carbonizing a unique heteroatom (S, N, P, O)-containing novel polymer, poly(cyclcotriphosphazene-co-2,5-dioxy-1,4-dithiane) (PCD), for precise screening of dopamine (DA). The designed electrode, SNPO-CPL-800, with optimized percentage of S, N, P, O doping through the sp2-carbon chain, and a large number of surface defects (thus leading to a maximum exposition number of catalytic active sites) led to fast molecular diffusion through the micro-porous structure and facilitated strong binding interaction with the targeted molecules in the interactive signaling transducer at the electrode-electrolyte interface. The designed SNPO-CPL-800 electrode exhibited a sensitive and selective response towards DA monitoring, with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.01 nM. We also monitored DA levels in commercially available chicken samples using the SNPO-CPL-800 electrode even in the presence of interfering species, thus proving the effectiveness of the designed electrode for the precise monitoring of DA in real samples. This research shows there is a strong potential for opening new windows for ultrasensitive DA monitoring with metal-free electrodes.

RESUMO

The aim of this paper is to explore the relationship between sustainability reporting (SR) and corporate reputation (CR) in the context of initial public offering (IPO) companies in the developing market of Malaysia. This study utilises secondary data from 2007 to 2017 derived from the content analysis of the annual reports and Datastream of 139 sampled IPO companies listed on Bursa Malaysia. The study also employs ordinary least squares (OLS) regression. The result shows that CR has a positive association with SR quantity and quality and its dimensions, i.e., society, environmental, employee, and product. This result suggests that IPO companies can use SR practices to improve their CR. Most companies give little attention to SR issues. More research should be conducted to examine the SR by IPO companies due to the significant role that SR plays in improving the CR of Malaysian IPO companies. The findings can be used by financial institutions and regulatory bodies to encourage companies to be more responsible on SR issues. Businesses should incorporate social practices into their SR decisions. This paper underlines the importance of integrating social and organisational activities.

RESUMO

This paper aims to determine the level of sustainability reporting (SR) among Malaysian initial public offering (IPO) companies. Due to a lack of awareness about SR and its dimensions, these aspects have not been receiving the necessary push from the public domain. This study is exploratory in nature. Secondary data were used by conducting content analysis of the annual reports of 139 sampled IPO companies listed on Bursa Malaysia from 2007 to 2017. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, with extent and quality being used as measures of SR. The results demonstrated gradual improvements of the extent and quality of SR among Malaysian IPO companies. The overall extent of SR was 20.70%, with employee disclosure scoring the highest (34.87%), followed by society disclosure (32.77%), environmental disclosure (22.48%), and finally product disclosure (9.88%). The overall quality of SR was 32.04%, with society disclosure scoring the highest (36.09%), followed by employee disclosure (34.13%), environmental disclosure (20.28%), and finally product disclosure (9.50%). SR dimensions, namely society, environmental, employee, and product received little interest from most of the IPO companies. This study proposes that additional studies can be conducted to investigate SR among IPO companies.

RESUMO

AIMS: Plant beneficial rhizobacteria (PBR) improve salt tolerance and plant yield in vegetable plants by producing 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate-deaminase, indole-3-acetic acid and phosphate solubilization. Organic-based carrier material is needed to ensure the PBR's uniform application, distribution, survival and functioning in a variety of fields. The PBR also use carbon present in the carrier as food and energy source. The selection of a suitable organic-based carrier material for the application of the PBR in normal and saline soils always has received less attention. The current study compared the PBR suitability of different organic-based carrier materials (biochar, biogas residues [BGRs] and coconut powder) and evaluated their effects on okra productivity under normal and saline soil conditions. METHODS AND RESULTS: In a pot experiment, the PBR strain Bacillus sp. MR-1/2 (accession number, MG548383) was applied with/or without organic-based carrier materials to okra grown in three different soils: S1 (EC 1.0 dS m-1 ), S2 (EC 3.0 dS m-1 ) and S3 (EC 5.0 dS m-1 ). The experiment was set up in a completely randomized design with five replicates in factorial arrangement. Results indicated that in soil S1, PBR + BGR increased the number of pods per plant, plant dry weight and indole compounds by 64%, 68% and 17% while reduced the electrolyte leakage (ELL), malonaldehyde (MDA) contents and stress ethylene level by 17%, 55% and 38%, respectively over the PBR application without any carrier. Similarly, in soil S2, the treatment PBR + BGR increased the number of pods by 81%, plant dry weight by 40% and indole compounds by 13% while reduced the ELL by 17%, MDA contents by 50% and stress ethylene by 30% over the PBR alone treatment. In soil S3, PBR + biochar increased the number of pods by 51%, plant dry weight by 62% and indole compounds by 20%, while reduced the ELL by 21%, MDA by 40% and indole compounds by 54% over the PBR alone treatment. CONCLUSIONS: Results concluded that in soil S1 and S2 (normal soils), BGR as carrier for PBR showed best results, while in soil S3, biochar as carrier for PBR resulted in enhanced potassium (K+ ) and calcium (Ca+2 ) uptake and increased the productivity of okra. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF STUDY: Response of different carrier materials in supporting PBR under different soil conditions was variable. This study will help in the selection and use of best suitable carrier material for PBR application under different soil conditions. It is recommended that farmer should use BGR as carrier material for PBR application in normal soils while biochar should be used as carrier for the PBR application in saline soil.

RESUMO

Plenty of refractory and environmentally hazardous bag-filter gas dust (BGD) is produced in the iron-making process. The effects of untreated BGD on anaerobic digestion (AD) with cattle manure were investigated. The BGD had the potential to boost the methane yield and digestate utilization considerably. The digester with 2.0 wt% BGD gained the highest methane yield (256.3 mL/g VS) and chemical oxygen demand removal rate (56.8%), 51.3% and 20.1% higher than that (169.4 mL/g VS, 47.3%) of the control group, respectively. The digestates with BGD possessed a utilization potential with the stability of 49.5-57.9% and fertility of 4.65-4.86%. Electrochemical measurements demonstrated that 2.0 wt% BGD improved the electron transport capacity of the AD system and increased the limiting current and redox peak current by 40.3% and 12.9%, respectively. A strategy for understanding the BGD reinforcing methanogenesis was proposed. This work also provides a technical support for recycling the BGD.

RESUMO

Defect engineering of metal organic frameworks offers potential prospects for tuning their features toward particular applications. Herein, two series of defective UiO-66 frameworks were synthesized via changing the concentration of the linker and synthetic temperature of the reaction. These defective materials showed a significant improvement in the capability of Pb(II) removal from wastewater. This strategy for defect engineering not only created additional active sites, more open framework, and enhanced porosity but also exposed more oxygen groups, which served as the adsorption sites to improve Pb(II) adsorption. A relationship among degree of defects, texture features, and performances for Pb(II) removal was successfully developed as a proof-of-concept, highlighting the importance of defect engineering in heavy metal remediation. To investigate the kinetic and adsorption isotherms, we performed adsorption experiments influenced by the time and concentration of the adsorbate, respectively. For the practicality of the materials, the most significant parameters such as pH, temperature, adsorbent concentration, selectivity, and recyclability as well as simulated natural surface water were also examined. This study provides a clue for the researchers to design other advanced defective materials for the enhancement of adsorption performance by tuning the defect engineering.

RESUMO

The development of excellent drug adsorbents and clarifying the interaction mechanisms between adsorbents and adsorbates are greatly desired for a clean environment. Herein, we report that a reduced graphene oxide modified sheeted polyphosphazene (rGO/poly (cyclotriphosphazene-co-4,4'-sulfonyldiphenol)) defined as PZS on rGO was used to remove the tetracycline (TC) drug from an aqueous solution. Compared to PZS microspheres, the adsorption capacity of sheeted PZS@rGO exhibited a high adsorption capacity of 496 mg/g. The adsorption equilibrium data well obeyed the Langmuir isotherm model, and the kinetics isotherm was fitted to the pseudo-second-order model. Thermodynamic analysis showed that the adsorption of TC was an exothermic, spontaneous process. Furthermore, we highlighted the importance of the surface modification of PZS by the introduction of rGO, which tremendously increased the surface area necessary for high adsorption. Along with high surface area, electrostatic attractions, H-bonding, π-π stacking and Lewis acid-base interactions were involved in the high adsorption capacity of PZS@rGO. Furthermore, we also proposed the mechanism of TC adsorption via PZS@rGO.

RESUMO

The anaerobic-co-digestion (AcoD) of dairy-manure (DM) and aloe-peel-residue (ALR) waste is enhanced by combining static-magnetic-field (SMF) and fly-ash (FA). Varying SMF intensities (5-30 mT) were applied to the co-digestion digesters containing the optimum FA concentration (1.5 wt.%), which were selected from co-digestion systems with a varying FA (0-2 wt.%). All experimental groups exhibit the greater COD removal rates (51.56-64.19%) and cumulative biogas yields (604.14-671.64 mL/g VS) than reference group (37.77% and 433.19 mL/g VS). The digester with optimum FA concentration (1.5 wt.%) under 5 mT shows the highest biogas yield (671.64 mL/g VS), and exhibits superior digestate stability (45.4%) and fertility (7.01%) for fertilizer utilization. A powerful strategy for understanding the underlying mechanism of the SMF and FA accelerant in an enhanced AcoD system is proposed. This work documents an innovative technique for an enhanced AcoD system using the SMF coupled with FA accelerant.
