RESUMO

Bitumen mining and upgrading in northeastern Alberta, Canada, releases toxic pollutants into the atmosphere, including mercury (Hg) and methylmercury (MeHg). This Hg and MeHg is then deposited to the surrounding landscape; however, the fate of these contaminants remains unknown. Here, we compare snowpack chemistry to high-frequency measurements of river water quality across six watersheds (five impacted by oil sands development and one unimpacted). Catchment scale snowpack Hg and MeHg loads normalized to watershed area were highest near oil sands operations. River water Hg concentrations and loads tracked discharge and tended to be higher downstream of mining operations, while MeHg concentrations and loads increased through the summer, reflecting peak summer MeHg production rates. Except in the reference watershed, snowpack Hg and MeHg loads equaled or exceeded the amount of Hg and MeHg exported during freshet and, in some cases, the entire hydrologic year. This suggests landscapes across the oil sands region, which are dominated by low-relief wetlands and other shallow-water systems, are accumulating Hg and MeHg. Importantly, during years of high discharge, these low-relief systems appear to become better connected and flush MeHg (and Hg) from the watershed. Thus, these watersheds may act as temporary, rather than as permanent, natural repositories of oil sands contaminants.

Bitumen-bearing suspended sediment (SS) eroded from the McMurray Formation (MF) are fine grained (silts and clays) and coated with natural hydrophobic oils. This results in poor settling and long range transport of associated contaminants. There was a longitudinal increase in polycyclic aromatic compound (PAC) concentrations for rivers that erode the MF from upstream to downstream regardless of time-of-year, while loads were substantially increased during high flow periods when the erosive forces are the greatest and the overland flow contribution is high. Within the MF, variation in PAC contributions is seen by the Ells River having higher loads than the Steepbank River. Using the Ells and Steepbank as examples, double plot PACs ratios suggest that the PAC concentrations and signatures vary spatially within the MF but that the weathering processes may be the same. Plots of the various homologs of PACs generally illustrated a normal distribution which suggests petrogenic origins. However, several PAC ratios suggested that both the parent material and the SS are pyrogenic in nature. While it is likely that some level of atmospheric deposition (anthropogenic or from forest fire) is incorporated into the SS of the rivers, it is likely to be limited relative to the proportion of naturally eroded MF sediments. Additional analysis will be needed to distinguish the relative risk of both anthropogenic (e.g., industrial operations) and natural sources (bitumen deposits, forest fire) of PACs to the SS and to long-range depositional environments, as they may have potential aquatic ecological effects.

The ecological effect of simultaneous exposure to two nutrient gradients, three insecticides and different predator intensities was investigated over a 3-week period in 80 outdoor, artificial streams using field-collected benthic invertebrates. The experimental design consisted of a 2 × 5 factorial structure with two nutrient levels (oligotrophic or mesotrophic) and five concentrations of the ternary insecticide mixture consisting of the insecticides (chlorpyrifos, dimethoate and imidacloprid). Equivalent toxic unit doses were summed to create a ternary insecticide dose (e.g., 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 0.3 TU) resulting in a range of ternary insecticide mixture toxicity (i.e., control groundwater, 0.3, 0.6, 0.9 and 1.2 TU). Two genera of insect predators, Gomphus spp. (Odonata) and Agnetina spp. (Plecoptera) were also added into each replicate stream, at densities and sizes comparable to those found at our collection site, to evaluate how the contribution of predators may change in nutrient limited (oligotrophic) versus amended (mesotrophic) systems. We describe a causal mechanism whereby the combined action of nutrients and insecticides reshaped aquatic community structure by interacting through multiple pathways. Specifically, mesotrophic conditions reduced the toxic effects of ternary insecticide mixtures for aquatic insects which, in some cases, appeared to increase abundance of aquatic insects. However, higher levels of insecticides in mesotrophic streams negated this effect and were even more toxic; for example, to aquatic insect grazers than the same insecticide doses in oligotrophic treatment levels. Effects of predators were only significant in oligotrophic streams. Evidence is provided as to how nutrient and contaminant interactions can greatly complicate the assessment of community level responses to insecticide mixtures due to direct and indirect effects of the resulting changes in the density of different genera and functional feeding groups within a community.

Pesticides are currently regulated individually but are present in aquatic systems as mixtures of toxicants. In this study, the lethal effects of three agricultural insecticides--chlorpyrifos, imidacloprid and dimethoate--on Chironomus dilutus larvae were examined. Ninety-six-hour static bioassays were performed using single, binary, and ternary toxicant mixtures. The effects of the binary mixtures were investigated using the MIXTOX model to determine if the mixtures behaved additively, synergistically, or antagonistically. Dimethoate was much less toxic than chlorpyrifos or imidacloprid. Chlorpyrifos and dimethoate were not additive in mixture despite their common mode of action (MOA) and resulted in opposing effects (synergism and antagonism, respectively) when combined with imidacloprid. Synergism was observed in the ternary mixture. These results suggest that current mixture models based on MOA alone may not always be adequate in describing mixture effects, as in the current situation of mixtures with relatively few components. Other factors, such as water solubility, secondary MOA, and mechanisms of toxicity, should also be considered in future investigations of multichemical-mixture effects.

We discuss the application of traits-based bioassessment approaches in retrospective bioassessment as well as in prospective ecological risk assessments in regulatory frameworks. Both approaches address the interaction between species and stressors and their consequences at different levels of biological organization, but the fact that a specific species may be less abundant in a potentially impacted site compared with a reference site is, regrettably, insufficient to provide diagnostic information. Species traits may, however, overcome the problems associated with taxonomy-based bioassessment. Trait-based approaches could provide signals regarding what environmental factors may be responsible for the impairment and, thereby, provide causal insight into the interaction between species and stressors. For development of traits-based (TBA), traits should correspond to specific types of stressors or suites of stressors. In this paper, a strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) analysis of TBA in both applications was used to identify challenges and potentials. This paper is part of a series describing the output of the TERA (Traits-based ecological risk assessment: Realising the potential of ecoinformatics approaches in ecotoxicology) Workshop held between 7 and 11 September, 2009, in Burlington, Ontario, Canada. The recognized strengths were that traits are transferrable across geographies, add mechanistic and diagnostic knowledge, require no new sampling methodology, have an old tradition, and can supplement taxonomic analysis. Weaknesses include autocorrelation, redundancy, and inability to protect biodiversity directly. Automated image analysis, combined with genetic and biotechnology tools and improved data analysis to solve autocorrelation problems were identified as opportunities, whereas low availability of trait data, their transferability, their quantitative interpretation, the risk of developing nonrelevant traits, low quality of historic databases, and their standardization were listed as threats.

The present study examined the effects of pulse exposures of the insecticide imidacloprid on the mayfly, Epeorus longinmanus Eaton (Family Heptageniidae), and on an aquatic oligochaete, Lumbriculus variegatus Miller (Family Lumbriculidae). Pulse exposures of imidacloprid are particularly relevant for examination, because this insecticide is relatively soluble (510 mg/L) and is most likely to be at effect concentrations during runoff events. Experiments examined the recovery of organisms after a 24-h pulse exposure to imidacloprid over an environmentally realistic range of concentrations (0, 0.1, 0.5, 1, 5, and 10 microg/L). Effects on feeding were measured by quantifying the algal biomass consumed by mayflies or foodstuffs egested by oligochaetes. Imidacloprid was highly toxic, with low 24-h median lethal concentrations (LC50s) in early mayfly instars (24-h LC50, 2.1 +/- 0.8 microg/L) and larger, later mayfly instars (24-h LC50, 2.1 +/- 0.5 microg/L; 96-h LC50, 0.65 +/- 0.15 microg/L). Short (24-h) pulses of imidacloprid in excess of 1 microg/L caused feeding inhibition, whereas recovery (4 d) varied, depending on the number of days after contaminant exposure. In contrast to mayflies, oligochaetes were relatively insensitive to imidacloprid during the short (24-h) pulse; however, immobility of oligochaetes was observed during a 4-d, continuous-exposure experiment, with 96-h median effective concentrations of 6.2 +/- 1.4 microg/L. Overall, imidacloprid reduced the survivorship, feeding, and egestion of mayflies and oligochaetes at concentrations greater than 0.5 but less than 10 microg/L. Inhibited feeding and egestion indicate physiological and behavioral responses to this insecticide.
