RESUMO

The need to transition from fossil fuels to renewables arises from factors such as depletion, price fluctuations, and environmental considerations. Lignocellulosic biomass, being abundant, and quickly renewable, and not interfering with food supplies, offers a standout alternative for chemical production. This paper explores the energetic characteristics of two derivatives of furfural-a versatile chemical obtained from biomass with great potential for commercial sustainable chemical and fuel production. The standard (p° = 0.1 MPa) molar enthalpies of formation of the liquids furfurylamine and 5-methylfurfurylamine were derived from the standard molar energies of combustion, determined in oxygen and at T = 298.15 K, by static bomb combustion calorimetry. Their standard molar enthalpies of vaporization were also determined at the same temperature using high-temperature Calvet microcalorimetry. By combining these data, the gas-phase enthalpies of formation at T = 298.15 K were calculated as -(43.5 ± 1.4) kJ·mol-1 for furfurylamine, and -(81.2 ± 1.7) kJ·mol-1 for 5-methylfurfurylamine. Furthermore, a theoretical analysis using G3 level calculations was performed, comparing the calculated enthalpies of formation with the experimental values to validate both results. This method has been successfully applied to similar molecules. The discussion looks into substituent effects in terms of stability and compares them with similar compounds.

RESUMO

The study and characterization of the biophysical properties of membranes and drug-membrane interactions represent a critical step in drug development, as biological membranes act as a barrier that the drug must overcome to reach its active site. Liposomes are widely used in drug delivery to circumvent the poor aqueous solubility of most drugs, improving systemic bioavailability and pharmacokinetics. Further, they can be targeted to deliver to specific disease sites, thus decreasing drug load, and reducing side effects and poor adherence to treatment. To improve drug solubility during liposome preparation, DMSO is the most widely used solvent. This raises concern about the potential effect of DMSO on membranes and leads us to investigate, using DSC and EPR, the influence of DMSO on the behavior of lipid model membranes of DMPC and DPPC. In addition, we tested the influence of DMSO on drug-membrane interaction, using compounds with different hydrophobicity and varying DMSO content, using the same experimental techniques. Overall, it was found that with up to 10% DMSO, changes in the bilayer fluidity or the thermotropic properties of the studied liposomes were not significant, within the experimental uncertainty. For higher concentrations of DMSO, there is a stabilization of both the gel and the rippled gel phases, and increased bilayer fluidity of DMPC and DPPC liposomes leading to an increase in membrane permeability.

RESUMO

Over the last four decades, vanadium compounds have been extensively studied as potential antidiabetic drugs. With the present review, we aim at presenting a general overview of the most promising compounds and the main results obtained with in vivo studies, reported from 1899-2023. The chemistry of vanadium is explored, discussing the importance of the structure and biochemistry of vanadate and the impact of its similarity with phosphate on the antidiabetic effect. The spectroscopic characterization of vanadium compounds is discussed, particularly magnetic resonance methodologies, emphasizing its relevance for understanding species activity, speciation, and interaction with biological membranes. Finally, the most relevant studies regarding the use of vanadium compounds to treat diabetes are summarized, considering both animal models and human clinical trials. An overview of the main hypotheses explaining the biological activity of these compounds is presented, particularly the most accepted pathway involving vanadium interaction with phosphatase and kinase enzymes involved in the insulin signaling cascade. From our point of view, the major discoveries regarding the pharmacological action of this family of compounds are not yet fully understood. Thus, we still believe that vanadium presents the potential to help in metabolic control and the clinical management of diabetes, either as an insulin-like drug or as an insulin adjuvant. We look forward to the next forty years of research in this field, aiming to discover a vanadium compound with the desired therapeutic properties.

RESUMO

In this work, a qualitative study of the phenolic content of Moringa oleifera leaves (MO), extracted with deep eutectic solvents (DES) based on choline chloride (ChCl) with lactic acid (LA) or glycerol (GLY), was performed by high-resolution mass spectrometry (HPLC-DAD-ESI-MSn). The two solvents (DES-LA and DES-GLY) extract similar classes of phenolics, and ten compounds were identified. The antioxidant profile was also studied (TPC, TFC, DPPH, FRAP, ORAC, and ABTS). Both solvents show an efficient extraction of phenolic compounds and high antioxidant capacity was verified for the extracts. However, the DES-Gly have a higher capacity for polyphenolic extraction (TPC led to 38.409 ± 0.095 mg GAE.g-1 and 2.259 ± 0.023 mg QE.g-1 for TFC). Films based on methylcellulose (MC) containing different amounts of DES or MO extracts, acting as plasticizers, were developed and characterized regarding their mechanical, optical, water vapor permeability, and microstructural properties. All films are uniform, clear, and transparent with smooth, homogeneous surfaces. It was found that the presence of more than 10% of MO extract and/or DES provided more flexible films (Eb for MC 2%_DES 20% achieved 4.330 ± 0.27 %, and 8.15 ± 0.39 % for MC 2%_MO 20%) with less mechanical and barrier resistance. The ultimate objective of this study was to provide information that could assist in the development of antimicrobial active methylcellulose films for sliced wheat bread packaging.

RESUMO

Depigmenting properties of tyrosinase inhibitors (TAi) boosted the search for new compounds applicable in cosmetics. Kojic acid, a 3-hydroxy-4-pyrone, is the most studied tyrosinase inhibitor but undesirable side effects, like dermatitis, and unspecified mechanism led to its exclusion in several countries. To discover safer and more efficient TA, we evaluated tyrosinase inhibitory effect of twelve 3-hydroxy-4-pyridinones (3,4-HPO) in vitro and considering the two reaction steps of inhibition in mushroom tyrosinase enzyme. In parallel we performed molecular docking studies in human and mushroom enzymes. Ligands I6 and I11 were the most effective compounds considering their inhibitory activity in both reaction steps. Our studies revealed that I6 has a non-competitive and mixed type of inhibition for monophenolase and diphenolase activity, while ligand I11 showed a mixed and competitive inhibition type for each reaction step. Molecular Docking results indicated that ligands tend to bind the enzyme by coordinating directly with the binuclear cooper centre and highlighted the relevance of voluminous and non-polar substituents at R2 to avoid the binding of the ligands to the enzyme. The work clarifies the type of inhibition established for kojic acid and points out the differences found for the set of 3,4-HPO chelators studied as prospective tyrosinase inhibitors.

RESUMO

The standard molar enthalpy of formation, in the gaseous phase, at T = 298.15 K, was calculated by combining, for each compound, the standard molar enthalpy of formation, in the crystalline phase, and the standard molar enthalpy of sublimation, yielding -(222.2 ± 3.5) kJ·mol-1 and -(234.1 ± 2.1) kJ·mol-1 for indole-3-carboxylic acid and 1-methylindole-3-carboxylic acid, respectively. Computational studies, at the G3(MP2) composite level, were conducted for indole-3-carboxylic acid and 1-methylindole-3-carboxylic acid as a complement of the experimental work, and they were also extended to the remaining isomers, indole-2-carboxylic acid, 1-methylindole-2-carboxylic acid, 3-methylindole-2-carboxylic acid, and 2-methylindole-3-carboxylic acid, to provide reliable estimates of the corresponding thermochemical parameters. The agreement of the estimates of the standard gas-phase enthalpy of formation so obtained, indole-2-carboxylic acid -(223.6 ± 0.8) kJ·mol-1, 1-methylindole-2-carboxylic acid -(223.7 ± 0.8) kJ·mol-1, 3-methylindole-2-carboxylic acid -(251.6 ± 1.0) kJ·mol-1, indole-3-carboxylic acid -(227.1 ± 1.1) kJ·mol-1, 1-methylindole-3-carboxylic acid -(238.0 ± 1.0) kJ·mol-1, and 2-methylindole-3-carboxylic acid -(267.2 ± 1.0) kJ·mol-1, with the available experimental data gives us additional confidence for the situations not studied experimentally. The enthalpic effect resulting from the entrance of the carboxyl group into the indole ring was discussed, and an enthalpic stabilization was found for indole and pyrrole derivatives when compared with other similar systems.

RESUMO

The standard (p degrees = 0.1 MPa) molar enthalpies of formation, Delta(f)H(m)degrees, of crystalline 2-, 3- and 4-chlorobenzophenone and 4,4'-dichlorobenzophenone were derived from the standard molar energies of combustion, Delta(c)U(m)degrees, in oxygen, to yield CO(2)(g), N(2)(g), and HCl x 600H(2)O(l), at T = 298.15 K, measured by rotating bomb combustion calorimetry. The Calvet high-temperature vacuum sublimation technique was used to measure the enthalpy of sublimation, Delta(cr)(g)H(m)degrees, of the compound 2-chlorobenzophenone. For the other three compounds, the standard molar enthalpies of sublimation, at T = 298.15 K were derived by the Clausius-Clapeyron equation, from the temperature dependence of the vapor pressures of these compounds, measured by the Knudsen-effusion technique. From the values of Delta(f)H(m)degrees and Delta(cr)(g)H(m)degrees, the standard molar enthalpies of formation of all the compounds, in the gaseous phase, Delta(f)H(m)degrees (g), at T = 298.15 K, were derived. These values were also calculated by using the B3LYP/6-311+G(2d,2p)//B3LYP/6-31G(d) computational approach.

RESUMO

The energetics of the C-F, C-Cl, C-Br, and C-I bonds in 2-haloethanols was investigated by using a combination of experimental and theoretical methods. The standard molar enthalpies of formation of 2-chloro-, 2-bromo-, and 2-iodoethanol, at 298.15 K, were determined as Delta(f)H(degree)m(CH2CH2OH, l) = -315.5 +/- 0.7 kJ.mol-1, Delta(f)H(degree)mBrCH2CH2OH, l) = -275.8 +/- 0.6 kJ.mol-1, Delta(f)H(degree)m(ICH2CH2OH, l) = -207.3 +/- 0.7 kJ.mol-1, by rotating-bomb combustion calorimetry. The corresponding standard molar enthalpies of vaporization, Delta(vap)H(degree)m(ClCH2CH2OH) = 48.32 +/- 0.37 kJ.mol-1, Delta(vap)H(degree)m(BrCH2CH2OH) = 54.08 +/- 0.40 kJ.mol-1, and Delta(vap)H(degree)m(ICH2CH2OH) = 57.03 +/- 0.20 kJ.mol-1 were also obtained by Calvet-drop microcalorimetry. The condensed phase and vaporization enthalpy data lead to Delta(f)H(degree)m(ClCH2CH2OH, g) = -267.2 +/- 0.8 kJ.mol-1, Delta(f)H(degree)m(BrCH2CH2OH, g) = -221.7 +/- 0.7 kJ.mol-1, and Delta(f)H(degree)m(ICH2CH2OH, g) = -150.3 +/- 0.7 kJ.mol-1. These values, together with the enthalpy of selected isodesmic and isogyric gas-phase reactions predicted by density functional theory (B3LYP/cc-pVTZ) and CBS-QB3 calculations were used to derive the enthalpies of formation of gaseous 2-fluoroethanol, Delta(f)H(degree)m(FCH2CH2OH, g) = -423.6 +/- 5.0 kJ.mol-1, and of the 2-hydroxyethyl radical, Delta(f)H(degree)m(CH2CH2OH, g) = -28.7 +/- 8.0 kJ.mol-1. The obtained thermochemical data led to the following carbon-halogen bond dissociation enthalpies: DHo(X-CH2CH2OH) = 474.4 +/- 9.4 kJ.mol-1 (X = F), 359.9 +/- 8.0 kJ.mol-1 (X = Cl), 305.0 +/- 8.0 kJ.mol-1 (X = Br), 228.7 +/- 8.1 kJ.mol-1 (X = I). These values were compared with the corresponding C-X bond dissociation enthalpies in XCH2COOH, XCH3, XC2H5, XCH=CH2, and XC6H5. In view of this comparison the computational methods mentioned above were also used to obtain Delta(f)H(degree)m-594.0 +/- 5.0 kJ.mol-1 from which DHo(F-CH2COOH) = 435.4 +/- 5.4 kJ.mol-1. The order DHo(C-F) > DHo(C-Cl) > DHo(C-Br) > DHo(C-I) is observed for the haloalcohols and all other RX compounds. It is finally concluded that the major qualitative trends exhibited by the C-X bond dissociation enthalpies for the series of compounds studied in this work can be predicted by Pauling's electrostatic-covalent model.

RESUMO

The standard (p0 = 0.1 MPa) molar enthalpies of formation, Delta fH(0)(M), for liquid 2,4,6-trichloropyrimidine and for crystalline 2-chloropyrimidine, 2,4- and 4,6-dichloropyrimidine, and 2,4,5,6-tetrachloropyrimidine compounds were determined at T = 298.15 K by rotating-bomb combustion calorimetry. The standard molar enthalpies of vaporization or sublimation, Delta (g)(cr,l) H(0)(M), of these compounds at T = 298.15 K were determined by Calvet microcalorimetry. The experimental standard molar enthalpies of formation of those compounds, in the gaseous state, at T = 298.15 K, were thus obtained by combining these two sets of results. The latter values have been employed in the calibration of the computational procedure, which has been used to estimate the gas-phase enthalpies of formation for the other chloropyrimidines that were not possible to obtain in a pure form for the experimental study. It is found that the exchange-correlation functional based on the local spin density approximation (LSDA) seems to be a cheap choice for the estimation of enthalpies of formation for heterocycles containing nitrogen atoms; the well-known B3LYP hybrid method yields larger differences, with respect to the experimental values, for 2,4,6-tri- and 2,4,5,6-tetrachloropyrimidines.

RESUMO

The standard (p(o) = 0.1 MPa) molar enthalpies of formation of 2,3-, 2,4-, 2,5-, 2,6-, 3,4- and 3,5-dichloroanilines were derived from the standard molar energies of combustion, in oxygen, to yield CO(2)(g), N(2)(g) and HCl.600H(2)O(l), at T = 298.15 K, measured by rotating bomb combustion calorimetry. The Calvet high-temperature vacuum sublimation technique was used to measure the enthalpies of sublimation of the six isomers. These two thermodynamic parameters yielded the standard molar enthalpies of formation of the six isomers of dichloroaniline, in the gaseous phase, at T = 298.15 K. The gas-phase enthalpies of formation were also estimated by G3MP2B3 calculations, which were further extended to the computation of gas-phase acidities, proton affinities, and ionization enthalpies.

RESUMO

The enthalpies of combustion, heat capacities, enthalpies of sublimation and enthalpies of formation of 2-tert-butylbenzimidazole (2tBuBIM) and 2-phenylimidazole (2PhIM) are reported and the results compared with those of benzene derivatives and a series of azoles (imidazoles, pyrazoles, benzimidazoles and indazoles). Theoretical estimates of the enthalpies of formation were obtained through the use of atom equivalent schemes. The necessary energies were obtained in single-point calculations at the B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) on B3LYP/6-31G optimized geometries. The comparison of experimental and calculated values of all studied compounds bearing H (unsubstituted), methyl (Me) ethyl (Et), propyl (Pr), isopropyl (iPr), tert-butyl (tBu), benzyl (Bn) and phenyl (Ph) groups show remarkable homogeneity. The remarkable consistency of both the calculated and experimental results allows us to predict with reasonable certainty the missing experimental values. The crystal and molecular structure of the 2-benzylbenzimidazole (2BnBIM) has been determined by X-ray analysis. The observed molecular conformation permits the crystal being built up through N-H...N hydrogen bonds and van der Waals contacts between the molecules. An attempt has been made to relate the crystal structure to the enthalpies of sublimation.
