RESUMO

Lingonberries (Vaccinium vitis-idaea L.) from two locations, northern (69°N, 18°E) and southern (59°N, 10°E) Norway, were grown under controlled conditions in a phytotron at two temperatures (9 and 15 °C) to study the effects of the ripening temperature and origin on the chemical composition of the berries. The concentrations of phenolic compounds, sugars, and organic acids as well as the profile of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were determined using chromatographic and mass spectrometric methods. Five anthocyanins, eleven flavonols, eight cinnamic acid derivatives, three flavan-3-ols, three sugars, three organic acids, and 77 VOCs were identified, of which 40 VOCs had not previously been reported in lingonberries. Berries from both locations, were found to have higher contents of anthocyanins and cinnamic acid derivatives when ripened at lower temperature (9 °C), compared to the higher temperature (15 °C). Lingonberries of northern origin had a different VOC profile and higher contents of anthocyanins and organic acids than berries originating from the south. Lingonberries from the northern location also had higher proportions of cyanidin-3-O-glucoside and cyanidin-3-O-arabinoside than lingonberries from the southern location. The results show that the composition of lingonberries is influenced by both the environment and the origin of the plants, with phenolic compounds mainly influenced by the growth temperature and VOCs mainly influenced by plant origin.

RESUMO

Recent global burden of disease reports find that a major proportion of global deaths and disability worldwide can be attributed to alcohol use. Thus, it may be surprising that very few studies have reported on the burden of alcohol-related disease in low income settings. The evidence of non-communicable disease (NCD) burden in Nepal was recently reviewed and concluded that data is still lacking, particularly to describe the burden of alcohol-related diseases (ARDs). Therefore, here we report on NCD burden and specifically ARDs, in hospitalized patients at a regional hospital in Nepal. We conducted a retrospective chart-review that included detailed information on all discharged patients during a four month period. A local database that included sociodemographic information and diagnoses at discharge was established. All doctor-assigned discharge diagnoses were retrospectively assigned ICD-10 codes. A total of 1,139 hospitalized adult patients were included in the study and one third of these were NCDs (n = 332). The main NCDs were chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) (n = 148, 45%) and ARDs (n = 57, 17%). Patients with ARD often presented with signs of liver cirrhosis and were typically younger men, with a median age at 43 years, from specific ethnic groups. These data demonstrate that severe alcohol-related organ failure in relatively young men contributed to a high proportion of NCDs in a regional hospital in Nepal. These findings are novel and alarming and warrant further studies that can establish the burden of ARDs and alcohol use in Nepal and other similar low-income countries.

RESUMO

Spotted wolffish Anarhichas minor (approx. 0.7 g) were found to be susceptible to infection with a nodavirus isolated from Atlantic halibut (AHNV) by bath-challenge. During the acute stage of infection, 4 to 8 wk post-challenge, viral encephalopathy and retinopathy (VER) were diagnosed by histopathology, immunohistochemistry (IHC) and reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Accumulated mortality was 52% in the challenged group. The surviving fish were sampled 16 wk post-challenge, by which time they had grown to approximately 17 g. No clinical signs of VER were observed in these fish. RT-PCR examination revealed the presence of nodavirus in several organs of the survivors, but no immunopositive cells were detected by IHC. Nodavirus was reisolated from fish at the last sampling in SSN-1 cells, showing that nodavirus retains virulence in persistently infected wolffish for at least 16 wk post-bath-challenge.

RESUMO

The North Norwegian Health Net is a comprehensive scheme to connect all health-care institutions in the area to a national computer network. Services available include telemedicine, e-mail and Web access. A general practitioner has responsibility for ensuring that the clinical information is correct. Medical departments are responsible for the content of their own Web pages. All institutions require authorization before connection to ensure data protection and security. Changes in communication between primary- and secondary-care sectors are being monitored. To date the implementation of the network programme has gone smoothly.

RESUMO

Patients with odor-triggered symptoms, meeting the case definition of multiple chemical sensitivities (MCS), continue to be seen in our institution and other health science centers [Amundsen, Mayo Clinic Dept. Intern. Med. Newslett. 9(1) (1986)]. The term MCS, unfortunately, feeds the thesis that symptoms are allergic-immune system in origin, a theory that has not withstood scientific scrutiny [American College of Physicians, Ann. Intern. Med. 111, 168-178 (1989); Terr, Ann. Intern. Med. 119, 163-164 (1993)]. It has been proposed that some of these cases may be examples of classical (Pavlovian) conditioning: many MCS patients meet diagnostic criteria for psychiatric illnesses, especially mood, anxiety, and somatoform disorders. Attention is turning to the complex relationship between olfactory stimulation, memory, and mood (psyche) in an attempt to understand why some individuals develop odor aversion symptoms and how to best manage these, frequently, severely disabled patients. Two subjects with typical odor-triggered symptoms have been treated, using behavioral medicine techniques, with marked improvement in both cases. The term "odor aversion" is proposed rather than MCS to describe patients with these symptoms.
