BACKGROUND: In recent years, new forms of media-social networking services (SNS)-such as Facebook and Sina Weibo have spread rapidly. Greater SNS use has been associated with greater body dissatisfaction, which in turn, is related to greater eating disorder (ED) symptom severity. In this study, we (1) investigated the relationships between ED tendencies, SNS use intensity, and body esteem and (2) examined the mediating role of body esteem in the relationship between SNS use intensity and ED tendencies among Japanese and Chinese students. METHODS: A total of 564 Japanese and Chinese college students aged 18-22 years were surveyed on their age and BMI, including self-filling questions from the Japanese and Chinese versions of the Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26), SNS Intensity Scale, Body Esteem Scale for Adolescents and Adults (BESAA), Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) scale. RESULTS: The proportion of students with a score of ≥ 20 on the EAT-26 was 15.8% (Japanese, 14.7%; Chinese, 17.0%). The number of participants with scores ≥ 20 on the EAT-26 was significantly higher than ever before, both in Japan and China. Chinese students reported greater body esteem than Japanese students, as well as a stronger association of SNS use intensity with body esteem. Among Japanese students, EAT-26 scores were unrelated to SNS Intensity Scale scores but had a weak negative correlation with BESAA scores; therefore, body esteem did not mediate the relationship between SNS use intensity and ED tendencies. Among Chinese students, scores on the SNS Intensity Scale and BESAA had a weak correlation with EAT-26 scores, and SNS use intensity reduced ED tendencies through greater body esteem. CONCLUSIONS: It is important to consider the way users engage with SNS, in addition to the SNS use intensity. Improving body esteem may reduce the risk of ED. Furthermore, it is necessary to include men in the discussion on ED in the future.


We investigated the relationships between eating disorder (ED) tendencies, social networking service (SNS) use intensity, and body esteem among Japanese and Chinese students, and compared the findings. We surveyed 564 Japanese and Chinese students regarding basic demographic information, ED tendencies, SNS use, body esteem, depression, and anxiety. The results showed that the number of participants with scores ≥ 20 on the Eating Attitudes Test was significantly higher than ever before, both in Japan and China. In Japanese students, body esteem affected ED tendencies, while SNS use intensity did not. In Chinese students, SNS use intensity reduced ED tendencies through greater body esteem. There were no gender differences in Eating Attitudes Test scores among Japanese students. This study provides evidence for the relationship between ED tendencies, SNS use, and body esteem in Asian countries.

Periodontitis drives irreversible destruction of periodontal tissue and is prone to exacerbating inflammatory disorders. Systemic immunomodulatory management continues to be an attractive approach in periodontal care, particularly within the context of 'predictive, preventive, and personalized' periodontics. The present study incorporated genetic proxies identified through genome-wide association studies for circulating immune cells and periodontitis into a comprehensive Mendelian randomization (MR) framework. Univariable MR, multivariable MR, subgroup analysis, reverse MR, and Bayesian model averaging (MR-BMA) were utilized to investigate the causal relationships. Furthermore, transcriptome-wide association study and colocalization analysis were deployed to pinpoint the underlying genes. Consequently, the MR study indicated a causal association between circulating neutrophils, natural killer T cells, plasmacytoid dendritic cells, and an elevated risk of periodontitis. MR-BMA analysis revealed that neutrophils were the primary contributors to periodontitis. The high-confidence genes S100A9 and S100A12, located on 1q21.3, could potentially serve as immunomodulatory targets for neutrophil-mediated periodontitis. These findings hold promise for early diagnosis, risk assessment, targeted prevention, and personalized treatment of periodontitis. Considering the marginal association observed in our study, further research is required to comprehend the biological underpinnings and ascertain the clinical relevance thoroughly.

BACKGROUND: Recent research has established the correlation between gut microbiota and periodontitis via oral-gut axis. Intestinal dysbiosis may play a pivotal bridging role in extra-oral inflammatory comorbidities caused by periodontitis. However, it is unclear whether the link is merely correlative or orchestrated by causative mechanistic interactions. This two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) study was performed to evaluate the potential bidirectional causal relationships between gut microbiota and periodontitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A two-sample MR analysis was performed using summary statistics from genome-wide association studies (GWAS) for gut microbiota (n = 18,340) and periodontitis (cases = 12,251; controls = 22,845). The inverse-variance weighted (IVW) method was used for the primary analysis, and we employed sensitivity analyses to assess the robustness of the main results. The PhenoScanner database was then searched for pleiotropy SNPs associated with potential confounders. In order to identify the possibly influential SNPs, we further conducted the leave-one-out analysis. Finally, a reverse MR analysis was performed to evaluate the possibility of links between periodontitis and genetically predicted gut microbiota alternation. RESULTS: 2,699 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with 196 microbiota genera were selected as instrumental variables (IVs). IVW method suggested that order Enterobacteriales (OR: 1.35, 95% CI 1.10-1.66), family Bacteroidales S24.7group (OR: 1.22, 95% CI 1.05-1.41), genus Lachnospiraceae UCG008 (OR: 1.16, 95% CI 1.03-1.31), genus Prevotella 7 (OR: 1.11, 95% CI 1.01-1.23), and order Pasteurellales (OR: 1.12, 95% CI 1.00-1.26) may be associated with a higher risk of periodontitis, while genus Ruminiclostridium 6 may be linked to a lower risk (OR: 0.82, 95% CI 0.70-0.95). The sensitivity and heterogeneity analyses yielded no indication of horizontal pleiotropy or heterogeneity. Only the association between order Enterobacteriales and the likelihood of periodontitis remained consistent across all alternative MR approaches. In the reverse MR analysis, four microbiota genera were genetically predicted to be down-regulated in periodontitis, whereas two were predicted to be up-regulated. CONCLUSIONS: The present MR analysis demonstrated the potential bidirectional causal relationships between gut microbiota and periodontitis. Our research provided fresh insights for the prevention and management of periodontitis. Future research is required to support the finding of our current study.

Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) is a common infectious disease in children. Enterovirus A71 (EV-A71) is one of the main pathogens, and coxsackievirus A6 (CVA6) has gradually become the dominant pathogen of HFMD in recent years. This study was conducted mainly to assess the serological prevalence of EV-A71 and CVA6 antibodies in people of different ages, sexes, and regions through a systematic review and meta-analysis. A comprehensive study was performed based on the EV-A71 and CVA6 serological literature published before May 2022. Heterogeneity analysis (Cochrane's Q test and the I2 statistic) and random effect models were adopted. Subgroup and meta-regression analyses were used to identify potential sources of heterogeneity in the data, and all analysis was performed using STATA version 16.0. This study included 71 studies involving 55,176 people from 13 countries that met the inclusion criteria. The serological prevalence of EV-A71 antibody in different studies was 4.31-88.8%, and that of CVA6 antibody was 40.8-80.9%. Meta-analysis results showed that the serum positive rate for EV-A71 antibody was 45.9% (95% CI: 37.6-54.1%). The rate in the Chinese population was 47.8% (95% CI: 42.4-53.2%), and in the other countries, it was 38% (95% CI: 23-55%). The serum positive rate for CVA6 antibody was 58.3% (95% CI: 46.5-70.2%). The rate in the Chinese population was 49.1% (95% CI: 38.3-59.9%), and in the other countries, it was 68% (95% CI: 51-83%). Subgroup analysis was also conducted. The seroprevalence of EV-A71 and CVA6 antibodies is related to age rather than gender or region. The rates of EV-A71 and CVA6 seropositivity are considerably lower in children younger than five years of age. However, the rates gradually increase with age. The findings of this study suggest that children under five years of age may be susceptible to EV-A71 and CVA6. Thus, safety education and vaccination should be strengthened accordingly. This study provides a basis for understanding the risk factors for EV-A71 and CVA6 infection in China and for deciding how to formulate standard preventive measures to prevent the spread of the virus.

With the growing awareness of environmental impacts of land degradation, pressure is mounting to improve the health and productivity of degrading soils, which could be achieved through the use of raw and modified biochar materials. The primary objective of the current study was to investigate the efficiency of pristine and Mg-modified rice-straw biochar (RBC and MRBC) for the reduction of greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions and improvement of soil properties. A 90 days' incubation experiment was conducted using treatments which included control (CK), two RBC dosages (1% and 2.5%), and two MRBC doses (1% and 2.5%). Soil physico-chemical and biological properties were monitored to assess the effects due to the treatments. Results showed that both biochars improved soil physicochemical properties as the rate of biochar increased. The higher rates of biochar (RBC2.5 and MRBC2.5) particularly increased enzymatic activities (Catalase, Invertase and Urease) in comparison to the control. Data obtained for phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) concentration indicated an increase in the Gram-negative bacteria (G-), actinomycetes and total PLFA with the increased biochar rate, while Gram-positive bacteria (G+) showed no changes to either level of biochar. As regards fungi concentration, it decreased with the biochar addition, whereas arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) showed non-significant changes. The release of CO2, CH4 and N2O showed a decreasing trend over the time. CO2 cumulative emission decreased for MRBC1 (5%) and MRBC2.5 (9%) over the pristine biochar treatments. The cumulative N2O emission decreased by 15-32% for RBC1 and RBC2.5 and by 22-33% for MRBC1 and MRBC2.5 as compared to the control, whereas CH4 emission showed non-significant changes. Overall, the present study provides for the first-time data that could facilitate the correct use of Mg-modified rice biochar as a soil additive for the mitigation of greenhouse gas emission and improvement of soil properties.

Being as a non-pharmacological medical intervention, low-magnitude high-frequency vibration (LMHFV) has shown a positive effect on bone induction and remodeling for various muscle diseases in animal studies, among which dental implants osteointegration were reported to be improved as well. However, whether LMHFV can be clinically used in dental implant is still unknown. In this study, efficacy, parameters and side effects of LMHFV were analyzed via data before 15th July 2020, collecting from MEDLINE/PubMed, Embase, Ovid and Cochrane Library databases. In the screened 1,742 abstracts and 45 articles, 15 animal studies involving 972 implants were included. SYRCLE's tool was performed to assess the possible risk of bias for each study. The GRADE approach was applied to evaluate the quality of evidence. Random effects meta-analysis detected statistically significant in total BIC (P < 0.0001) and BV/TV (P = 0.001) upon loading LMHFV on implants. To conclude, LMHFV played an active role on BIC and BV/TV data according to the GRADE analysis results (medium and low quality of evidence). This might illustrate LMHFV to be a worthy way in improving osseointegration clinically, especially for osteoporosis. RESUMO

Glioblastoma (GBM) is one of the most malignant and aggressive primary brain tumor, with a mean life expectancy of less than 15 months. The malignant nature of GBM prompts the need for further research on its tumorigenesis and novel treatments to improve its outcome. One of the promising research targets is autophagy, a fundamental metabolic process of degrading and recycling cellular components. Interventions to activate or inhibit autophagy have both been proposed as GBM therapies, suggesting a controversial, context-dependent role of autophagy in GBM tumorigenesis. In this review, we highlight the molecular links between GBM and autophagy with the focus on the effects of autophagy on the stemness maintenance, metabolism and proteostasis in GBM tumorigenesis. Understanding the molecular pathways involved in autophagy target is critical for GBM therapy.
