Various research endeavours are designed to identify ecosystem services, assess their spatial distribution, and prioritize them in a given forest landscape. The Turkish State Forest Organization has introduced an ecosystem-based multiple-use forest management philosophy since 2008, which emphasizes the need for identifying and allocating ecosystem services to each forest planning unit. This paper aims to investigate the use of Multiple Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) techniques and explores their effectiveness and suitability in identifying and allocating ecosystem services to forest units, considering scientific suitability, stakeholder engagement and the sustainability concept in the context of ecosystem-based forest management decision-making processes in a case study area of Turkey. We propose a framework that entails an iterative process comprising various stages, starting from identifying ecosystem services (ES) to allocating them to forest stands with a participatory approach. We employed the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) and the Delphi method to determine stakeholder preferences and allocate ecosystem services to forest stands. This was achieved through an equation newly developed using scientific suitability, stakeholder preferences, and the sustainability concept. The landscape percentage allocated primarily to ES was as follows: water regulation (55.44%), soil protection (16.47%), biodiversity conservation (14.03%), wood production (13.08%), and aesthetic-recreation (0.84%). Notably, no allocations were made for national defence and climate regulation services. In conclusion, the stratification of Posof forests into zones was efficiently achieved a priori, considering both scientific-technical and socio-cultural criteria through MCDA techniques based on stakeholder preferences. This study streamlines the decision-making process involved in spatially allocating ecosystem services and provides crucial information instrumental in determining management objectives and optimal forest activities.

Maize (Zea mays) is moderately sensitive to salt stress. Therefore, increasing salinity in soil causes the arrestment of physiological processes and retention of growth and development, consequently leading to yield loss. Although many strategies have been launched to improve salt stress tolerance, plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) are considered the most promising approach due to being more environmentally friendly and agronomically sustainable than chemicals. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the potential of Bacillus spp. and the role of microRNA-mediated genetic regulation in maize subjected to seed bio-priming application to mitigate salt stress effects. To this end, maize seeds were bio-primed with the vegetative form of B. pumilus, B. licheniformis, and B. coagulans both individually or combined, subsequently treated to NaCl, and the seedlings were screened morphologically, physiologically, and transcriptionally. The study revealed that seed bio-priming with B. licheniformis reduced the stress effects of maize seedlings by increasing catalase (CAT) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) activities by 2.5- and 3-fold, respectively, tolerating the decrease in chlorophyll content (CC), upregulating miR160d expression which led to a 36% increase in root fresh weight (RFW) and a 39% increase in shoot fresh weight (SFW). In conclusion, Bacillus spp. successfully alleviated salt stress effects on maize by modulating antioxidant enzymes and miRNA expression.

PURPOSE: Knowledge of normal anatomy and variations of testicular arteries are critical for planning before minimally invasive surgery. In this article, we aimed to evaluate the morphological characteristics of testicular arteries by MDCT and propose a new classification system. METHOD: A total of 400 adult patients (total of 819 testicular arteries) who underwent abdominal CT angiography examination for several unrelated reasons were enrolled in this study. Testicular arteries (TAs) were evaluated in terms of number, origin, course, and caliber. Based on our findings, we also proposed a novel anatomical classification for the TAs according to their origin (divided into 5 types-type 1-5-) and course (divided into three types-type a-c-). Type 4 origin and type a course are the expected normal origin and course of bilateral TAs. RESULTS: The most common type based on the origin was type 4, with the testicular artery originating from the abdominal aorta, inferior to the level of the renal artery within 5 cm distal to the renal arteries. 70.7% of the right and 75.6% of the left testicular arteries were type 4. The most common type of the vessel course was the normal expected trajectory (type a) with an incidence of 76.3% for the right and 82.6% for the left testicular arteries. CONCLUSION: Normal anatomy and variations of testicular arteries may be effectively evaluated by CT angiography in a non-invasive manner.

Penicillin G acylase is the key enzyme used in the industrial production of ß-lactam antibiotics. This enzyme hydrolyzes penicillin G and related ß-lactam antibiotics releasing 6-aminopenicillanic acid, which is an intermediate in the production of semisynthetic penicillins. To improve the enzymatic activity of Escherichia coli penicillin acylase, sequential rounds of error-prone polymerase chain reaction were applied to the E. coli pac gene. After the second round of evolution, the best mutant M2234 with enhanced activity was selected and analyzed. DNA sequence analyses of M2234 revealed that one amino acid residue (K297I), located far from the center of the catalytic pocket, was changed. This mutant (M2234) has a specific activity 4.0 times higher than the parent enzyme and also displayed higher stability at pH 10.
