RESUMO

The present paper investigates strain-induced sorption in mesoporous silicon. Contrarily to a previous report based on indirect evidence, we find that external mechanical strain or stress has no measurable impact on sorption isotherms, down to a relative accuracy of 10-3. This conclusion is in agreement with the analysis of the sorption-induced strain of porous silicon and holds for other stiff mesoporous materials such as porous silicas.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: No therapy has yet proven effective in COVID-19. Tocilizumab (TCZ) in patients with severe COVID-19 could be an effective treatment. METHOD: We conducted a retrospective case-control study in the Nord Franche-Comté Hospital, France. We compared the outcome of patients treated with TCZ and patients without TCZ considering a combined primary endpoint: death and/or ICU admissions. RESULTS: Patients with TCZ (n=20) had a higher Charlson comorbidity index (5.3 [±2.4] vs 3.4 [±2.6], P=0.014), presented with more severe forms (higher level of oxygen therapy at 13L/min vs 6L/min, P<0.001), and had poorer biological findings (severe lymphopenia: 676/mm3 vs 914/mm3, P=0.037 and higher CRP level: 158mg/L vs 105mg/L, P=0.017) than patients without TCZ (n=25). However, death and/or ICU admissions were higher in patients without TCZ than in the TCZ group (72% vs 25%, P=0.002). CONCLUSION: Despite the small sample size and retrospective nature of the work, this result strongly suggests that TCZ may reduce the number of ICU admissions and/or mortality in patients with severe SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia.

RESUMO

We report on the evaporation of hexane from porous alumina and silicon membranes. These membranes contain billions of independent nanopores tailored to an ink-bottle shape, where a cavity several tens of nanometers in diameter is separated from the bulk vapor by a constriction. For alumina membranes with narrow enough constrictions, we demonstrate that cavity evaporation proceeds by cavitation. Measurements of the pressure dependence of the cavitation rate follow the predictions of the bulk, homogeneous, classical nucleation theory, definitively establishing the relevance of homogeneous cavitation as an evaporation mechanism in mesoporous materials. Our results imply that porous alumina membranes are a promising new system to study liquids in a deeply metastable state.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Cognitive remediation represents an effective treatment for improving functional outcome of psychiatric diseases like schizophrenia or depression. However, in clinical routine the therapeutic approach has not been established continuously. This can be partly attributed to doubts about the reasonableness of cognitive remediation for psychiatric patients. Therefore the current study investigates psychiatric patients' acceptance of, motivation for, and exhaustion due to cognitive remediation compared to an established treatment programme. METHODS: 21 psychiatric patients who simultaneously participated in occupational therapy and cognitive remediation rated the motivation, exhaustion, enjoyment, and effort on a visual analogue scale (VAS) over five weeks with regard to the respective therapy. RESULTS: The ratings of occupational therapy and cognitive remediation did not differ relating to motivation, exhaustion, and enjoyment. The subjective effort in cognitive remediation was higher than that in occupational therapy. DISCUSSION: Cognitive remediation is evaluated as being equivalent to an already established treatment programme by psychiatric patients concerning motivation, enjoyment, and exhaustion. Doubts about the acceptance and reasonableness of cognitive remediation could not be confirmed. In clinical routine cognitive remediation as an effective and accepted therapeutic approach should be integrated as a standard procedure for various disorders.

RESUMO

We have sequenced the genome of bean golden mosaic virus, which comprises two circular single-stranded DNA molecules (2646 and 2587 nucleotides long) of mostly unique sequence. Comparison of the sequences of bean golden mosaic virus and of cassava latent virus, which share serological relationship but are very different in host range and geographical origin, shows that each virus has a unique 200-nucleotide sequence (common region) on each 2.6-kilobase molecule of its genome. The common regions of the two viruses have no sequence homology except for a short inverted repeat near the 3' end. Six open reading frames were identified that possess considerable sequence homology between the two viruses and, in bean golden mosaic virus, may encode proteins of 15.6, 19.6, 27.7, 29.7, 33.1, and 40.2 kDa. Conserved open reading frames are found in both the viral strand and the complementary strand, are approximately the same size, and are in the same orientation with respect to the common region in both viruses. We propose that temporal regulation in geminiviruses depends on the polarity of transcription and that the common region represents a replication origin and contains elements that serve to modulate gene expression.
