Leptin and adiponectin play an essential role in energy metabolism. Leptin has also been proposed as a marker for monitoring training load. So far, no studies have investigated the variability of these hormones in athletes and how they are regulated during cumulative exercise. This study monitored leptin and adiponectin in 15 endurance athletes twice daily in the days before, during and after a 9-day simulated cycling stage race. Adiponectin significantly increased during the race (p = 0.001) and recovery periods (p = 0.002) when compared to the baseline, while leptin decreased significantly during the race (p < 0.0001) and returned to baseline levels during the recovery period. Intra-individual variability was substantially lower than inter-individual variability for both hormones (leptin 34.1 vs. 53.5%, adiponectin 19% vs. 37.2%). With regards to exercise, this study demonstrated that with sufficient, sustained energy expenditure, leptin concentrations can decrease within the first 24 hours. Under the investigated conditions there also appears to be an optimal leptin concentration which ensures stable energy homeostasis, as there was no significant decrease over the subsequent race days. In healthy endurance athletes the recovery of leptin takes 48-72 hours and may even show a supercompensation-like effect. For adiponectin, significant increases were observed within 5 days of commencing racing, with these elevated values failing to return to baseline levels after 3 days of recovery. Additionally, when using leptin and adiponectin to monitor training loads, establishing individual threshold values improves their sensitivity.

AIM: Hematological and biochemical parameters of 160 Middle Eastern adolescent male athletes (aged from 12-18 years) were tested in order to investigate their iron status and to establish reference values for this population. A focus of this study was also the investigation of Reticulocyte hemoglobin (RetHe) and soluble transferrin receptor (sTfR). METHODS: Complete blood count, reticulocyte and sera parameters were analyzed at the beginning of the training season for these adolescent athletes. As the diagnosis of iron deficiency in adolescents is extremely difficult subjects were subdivided in three age groups (12-13, 14-15, 16-18). RESULTS: For most of the parameters our results confirmed the existing reference values reported in young athletes. Exceptions were however found with lower Mean Cell Volumes (79.9±4.3 fl) in this group when compared to other age matched data. RetHe, ferritin and sTfR levels were monitored for the interpretation of the iron status in this population and reference values for these parameters were also established. CONCLUSIONS: Information to help evidence based decision making about the need for supplementation or further investigations is provided to physicians and nutritionists. RetHe with a proposed threshold value of 25 pg expands the list of parameters which can be used to monitor athletes.

The athlete biological passport for the fight against doping is currently based on longitudinal monitoring for abnormal changes in cellular blood parameters. Serum parameters related to altered erythropoiesis could be considered for inclusion in the passport. The aim of this study was to quantify the changes in such parameters in athletes during a period of intense exercise.12 highly trained cyclists tapered for 3 days before 6 days of simulated intense stage racing. Morning and afternoon blood samples were taken on most days and analysed for total protein, albumin, soluble transferrin receptor and ferritin concentrations. Plasma volume was determined via total haemoglobin mass measured by carbon-monoxide rebreathing. Percent changes in means from baseline and percent standard errors of measurement (analytical error plus intra-athlete variation) on each measurement occasion were estimated with mixed linear modelling of log-transformed measures. Means of all variables changed substantially in the days following the onset of racing, ranging from -13% (haemoglobin concentration) to +27% (ferritin). After the second day, errors of measurement were generally twice those at baseline. Plasma variables were affected by heavy exercise, either because of changes in plasma volume (total protein, albumin, haemoglobin), acute phase/inflammatory reactions (ferritin) or both (soluble transferrin receptor). These effects need to be taken into consideration when integrating a plasma parameter into the biological passport model for athletes.

OBJECTIVES: To examine with a parallel group study design the performance and physiological responses to a 14-day off-season 'live high-train low in the heat' training camp in elite football players. METHODS: Seventeen professional Australian Rules Football players participated in outdoor football-specific skills (32 ± 1°C, 11.5 h) and indoor strength (23 ± 1°C, 9.3 h) sessions and slept (12 nights) and cycled indoors (4.3 h) in either normal air (NORM, n=8) or normobaric hypoxia (14 ± 1 h/day, FiO2 15.2-14.3%, corresponding to a simulated altitude of 2500-3000 m, hypoxic (HYP), n=9). They completed the Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery level 2 (Yo-YoIR2) in temperate conditions (23 ± 1°C, normal air) precamp (Pre) and postcamp (Post). Plasma volume (PV) and haemoglobin mass (Hb(mass)) were measured at similar times and 4 weeks postcamp (4WPost). Sweat sodium concentration ((Na(+))(sweat)) was measured Pre and Post during a heat-response test (44°C). RESULTS: Both groups showed very large improvements in Yo-YoIR2 at Post (+44%; 90% CL 38, 50), with no between-group differences in the changes (-1%; -9, 9). Postcamp, large changes in PV (+5.6%; -1.8, 5.6) and (Na(+))sweat (-29%; -37, -19) were observed in both groups, while Hb(mass) only moderately increased in HYP (+2.6%; 0.5, 4.5). At 4WPost, there was a likely slightly greater increase in Hb(mass) (+4.6%; 0.0, 9.3) and PV (+6%; -5, 18, unclear) in HYP than in NORM. CONCLUSIONS: The combination of heat and hypoxic exposure during sleep/training might offer a promising 'conditioning cocktail' in team sports.

OBJECTIVE: The major objective of this study was to investigate the effects of several days of intense exercise on growth hormone (hGH) testing using the World Anti-Doping Agencies hGH isoform differential immunoassays. Additionally the effects of circadian variation and exercise type on the isoform ratios were also investigated. STUDY DESIGN: 15 male athletes performed a simulated nine day cycling stage race. Blood samples were collected twice daily over a period of 15 days (stage race+three days before and after). hGH isoforms were analysed by the official WADA immunoassays (CMZ Assay GmbH). RESULTS: All measured isoform ratios were far below the WADA decision limits for an adverse analytical finding. Changes in the isoform ratios could not be clearly connected to circadian variation, exercise duration or intensity. CONCLUSIONS: The present study demonstrates that the hGH isoform ratios are not significantly affected by exercise or circadian variation. We demonstrated that heavy, long term exercise does not interfere with the decision limits for an adverse analytical finding.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the usefulness of selected physiological and perceptual measures to monitor fitness, fatigue and running performance during a pre-season, 2-week training camp in eighteen professional Australian Rules Football players (21.9±2.0 years). DESIGN: Observational. METHODS: Training load, perceived ratings of wellness (e.g., fatigue, sleep quality) and salivary cortisol were collected daily. Submaximal exercise heart rate (HRex) and a vagal-related heart rate variability index (LnSD1) were also collected at the start of each training session. Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery level 2 test (Yo-YoIR2, assessed pre-, mid- and post-camp, temperate conditions) and high-speed running distance during standardized drills (HSR, >14.4 km h(-1), 4 times throughout, outdoor) were used as performance measures. RESULTS: There were significant (P<0.001 for all) day-to-day variations in training load (coefficient of variation, CV: 66%), wellness measures (6-18%), HRex (3.3%), LnSD1 (19.0%), but not cortisol (20.0%, P=0.60). While the overall wellness (+0.06, 90% CL (-0.14; 0.02) AU day(-1)) did not change substantially throughout the camp, HRex decreased (-0.51 (-0.58; -0.45)% day(-1)), and cortisol (+0.31 (0.06; 0.57) nmol L(-1)day(-1)), LnSD1 (+0.1 (0.04; 0.06) ms day(-1)), Yo-YoIR2 performance (+23.7 (20.8; 26.6) m day(-1), P<0.001), and HSR (+4.1 (1.5; 6.6) m day(-1), P<0.001) increased. Day-to-day ΔHRex (r=0.80, 90% CL (0.75; 0.85)), ΔLnSD1 (0.51 (r=0.40; 0.62)) and all wellness measures (0.28 (-0.39; -0.17)

The purpose of this study was to quantify match play intensity distribution in young soccer players in relation to age, playing position and physical fitness. Distance covered and heart rate were measured (global positioning system) on 103, highly-trained young players (Under13 to Under 18) during 42 international club games. Maximal sprinting speed (MSS), estimated maximal aerobic speed (MAS) and maximal heart rate (HRmax) were assessed via field test measures. Distance covered and heart rate (HR) were categorized into 5 intensity zones relative to MSS and MAS and HR(max), respectively. Intensity distribution was significantly influenced by both age and playing position with younger groups, wide-midfielders and strikers covering the greatest distance above the MAS. There was a significant, negative, large-to-very large correlation (r= -0.52-0.74) between MAS and the distance run at speeds above MAS for all positions except strikers. HR responses were not different across age groups and playing positions. Distance covered below MAS were lower in the second half for all positions (P<0.05; 0.08<η(2)<0.20), while distance covered at intensities above MAS were maintained (P>0.1; 0.00<η(2)<0.03). This reduction in distance covered below MAS was not related to a player's physical capacity. Except for strikers, a superior aerobic fitness level was unlikely to affect total distance covered but was associated with a reduced individual running demand during the game.

INTRODUCTION: Dehydration, fluid shifts or changes in coagulation occurring during air travel can trigger distinct reactions in the haematological system. Athletes are concerned that these effects might impair sporting performance, increase the risk of thrombosis or cause abnormalities in blood values that might be mistaken for doping in the 'Athlete's biological passport' (ABP) a longitudinal monitoring of haematological variables in antidoping. The aim of the study was to investigate key variables of the ABP before and after a long-haul flight in athletes. METHODS: Fifteen endurance athletes were submitted to ABP blood samples in the morning before and after arrival of an 8 h flight. Two additional samples were obtained in the morning and the evening 3 days after the travel. Twelve nontravelling subjects served as controls. RESULTS: Haemoglobin concentration was higher before than after travel in athletes (+0.5 g/dL, P = 0.038), a similar pattern was observed 3 days after the travel. No difference was observed in the control group. Reticulocyte% did not show any significant changes in neither of the groups. CONCLUSION: The observed changes are in line with normal diurnal variations. There is no indication that travel will affect haematological variables in way that might be mistaken for blood doping.

Haemoglobin mass (Hbmass) determination using CO rebreathing may assist to detect illegal blood doping practices, however variations in Hbmass with periods of intensive training and detraining must be quantified. This study aimed to determine the effect of a 30-day period of detraining on Hbmass in ultra-endurance triathletes. 9 male recreational triathletes (29-44 years) participated in the study. Hbmass was assessed using CO rebreathing 30 days and 10 days before an ultra-endurance triathlon and after ~10, 20 and 30 days of detraining following the race. V˙O2max was assessed 10 days before the race and also after the 30-day detraining period, which consisted of an 87% reduction in training hours. After 30-days of detraining there was a 3.1% decrease in mean Hbmass from 868±99 to 840±94 g, (p=0.03), and a 4.7% decrease in mean V˙O2max from 4.83±0.29 to 4.61±0.41 L/min as well as a 2.8% increase of body mass from 75.1±6.4 to 77.1±6.1 kg and a 28% increase in skinfold total from 43.9±14.2 to 55.1±14.0 mm. Individual decreases in Hbmass following detraining would need to be considered if using Hbmass for anti-doping purposes.

The aim of the present study was to verify the validity of using exercise heart rate (HRex), HR recovery (HRR) and post-exercise HR variability (HRV) during and after a submaximal running test to predict changes in physical performance over an entire competitive season in highly trained young soccer players. Sixty-five complete data sets were analyzed comparing two consecutive testing sessions (3-4 months apart) collected on 46 players (age 15.1 ± 1.5 years). Physical performance tests included a 5-min run at 9 km h(-1) followed by a seated 5-min recovery period to measure HRex, HRR and HRV, a counter movement jump, acceleration and maximal sprinting speed obtained during a 40-m sprint with 10-m splits, repeated-sprint performance and an incremental running test to estimate maximal cardiorespiratory function (end test velocity V (Vam-Eval)). Possible changes in physical performance were examined for the players presenting a substantial change in HR measures over two consecutive testing sessions (greater than 3, 13 and 10% for HRex, HRR and HRV, respectively). A decrease in HRex or increase in HRV was associated with likely improvements in V (Vam-Eval); opposite changes led to unclear changes in V (Vam-Eval). Moderate relationships were also found between individual changes in HRR and sprint [r = 0.39, 90% CL (0.07;0.64)] and repeated-sprint performance [r = -0.38 (-0.05;-0.64)]. To conclude, while monitoring HRex and HRV was effective in tracking improvements in V (Vam-Eval), changes in HRR were moderately associated with changes in (repeated-)sprint performance. The present data also question the use of HRex and HRV as systematic markers of physical performance decrements in youth soccer players.

A high hemoglobin mass (Hb(mass)) is associated with a high maximum aerobic power (VO(2max)), however, the extent to which Hb(mass) is influenced by training is currently unclear. Accordingly, this study monitored changes in Hb(mass) and VO(2max) in 12 previously untrained adults (aged 18-25 years) following 40 days of regular physical activity. Hb(mass) and VO(2max) were assessed at the start and end of a 40-day physical activity program, which comprised of approximately 40 min of daily, moderate-intensity physical activity. Relative VO(2max) increased by 11.3%, yet there was no significant change in relative Hb(mass) (1.7%) and body mass (0.2%) during the 40-day period. There was a significant correlation between Hb(mass) and VO(2max) at the start of the study (r=0.58, P=0.05), but not between the change in relative VO(2max) and the change in relative Hb(mass) (r=-0.07, P=0.83). Our results support the concept of relative stability in Hb(mass) with approximately 1 month of moderate-intensity physical activity suggesting that Hb(mass) may be used for talent identification and possibly for anti-doping purposes.

The activity profiles of highly trained young soccer players were examined in relation to age, playing position and physical capacity. Time-motion analyses (global positioning system) were performed on 77 (U13-U18; fullbacks [FB], centre-backs [CB], midfielders [MD], wide midfielders [W], second strikers [2 (nd)S] and strikers [S]) during 42 international club games. Total distance covered (TD) and very high-intensity activities (VHIA; >16.1 km·h (-1)) were computed during 186 entire player-matches. Physical capacity was assessed via field test measures (e. g., peak running speed during an incremental field test, VVam-eval). Match running performance showed an increasing trend with age ( P<0.001, partial eta-squared (η (2)): 0.20-0.45). When adjusted for age and individual playing time, match running performance was position-dependent ( P<0.001, η (2): 0.13-0.40). MD covered the greater TD; CB the lowest ( P<0.05). Distance for VHIA was lower for CB compared with all other positions ( P<0.05); W and S displayed the highest VHIA ( P<0.05). Relationships between match running performance and physical capacities were position-dependent, with poor or non-significant correlations within FB, CB, MD and W (e. g., VHIA vs. VVam-eval: R=0.06 in FB) but large associations within 2 (nd)S and S positions (e. g., VHIA vs. VVam-eval: R=0.70 in 2 (nd)S). In highly trained young soccer players, the importance of fitness level as a determinant of match running performance should be regarded as a function of playing position.

This study examined the occurrence and nature of repeated-sprint sequences (RSS) in highly-trained young soccer players, as a function of age, playing position and playing time. Time-motion analyses using a global positioning system (GPS) were performed on 99 highly-trained young soccer (U13, U14, U15, U16, U17 and U18) players during 42 international games. Sprint activities were defined as at least a 1-s run at intensities higher than 61% of the individual peak running velocity; RSS, as a minimum of 2 consecutive sprints interspersed with a maximum of 60 s. During the first half of games the younger teams had a greater number of RSS than the older teams (P<0.001): U13>U14>U16>U15>U18>U17. The younger players also performed more (e. g., U14 vs. U17: 2.8±0.3 vs. 2.6±0.3, P<0.05) and longer (e. g., U14 vs. U17: 2.8±0.5 vs. 2.6±0.5 s, P<0.05) sprints per sequence than the older players. RSS occurrence was also affected by playing position and decreased throughout the game in most age-groups (P<0.001). Both the occurrence and the nature of RSS are affected by age, position and playing time. Present results also question the importance of repeated-sprint ability as a crucial physical component of soccer performance in developing players.

Athletes regularly compete at 2,000-3,000 m altitude where peak oxygen consumption (VO2peak) declines approximately 10-20%. Factors other than VO2peak including gross efficiency (GE), power output, and pacing are all important for cycling performance. It is therefore imperative to understand how all these factors and not just VO2peak are affected by acute hypobaric hypoxia to select athletes who can compete successfully at these altitudes. Ten well-trained, non-altitude-acclimatised male cyclists and triathletes completed cycling tests at four simulated altitudes (200, 1,200, 2,200, 3,200 m) in a randomised, counter-balanced order. The exercise protocol comprised 5 x 5-min submaximal efforts (50, 100, 150, 200 and 250 W) to determine submaximal VO2 and GE and, after 10-min rest, a 5-min maximal time-trial (5-minTT) to determine VO2peak and mean power output (5-minTT(power)). VO2peak declined 8.2 +/- 2.0, 13.9 +/- 2.9 and 22.5 +/- 3.8% at 1,200, 2,200 and 3,200 m compared with 200 m, respectively, P < 0.05. The corresponding decreases in 5-minTT(power) were 5.8 +/- 2.9, 10.3 +/- 4.3 and 19.8 +/- 3.5% (P < 0.05). GE during the 5-minTT was not different across the four altitudes. There was no change in submaximal VO2 at any of the simulated altitudes, however, submaximal efficiency decreased at 3,200 m compared with both 200 and 1,200 m. Despite substantially reduced power at simulated altitude, there was no difference in pacing at the four altitudes for athletes whose first trial was at 200 or 1,200 m; whereas athletes whose first trial was at 2,200 or 3,200 m tended to mis-pace that effort. In conclusion, during the 5-minTT there was a dose-response effect of hypoxia on both VO2peak and 5-minTT(power) but no effect on GE.

This study investigated the effect of using three automated blood lactate analysers (Accusport, Lactate Pro, YSI 1500 Sport) on blood lactate transition thresholds (BLTT). Blood lactate concentrations were measured using the three analysers in rowers (n = 17) and kayakers (n = 6) during incremental exercise. The BLTT determined were: 1) ADAPT lactate threshold (data point preceding lactate increase of > or = 0.4 mmol x l(-1)), 2) log-log lactate threshold (point of lactate increase when log lactate plotted against log of relevant exercise parameter), 3) DMAX anaerobic threshold, 4) ADAPT anaerobic threshold (modified DMAX method), 5) Onset of blood lactate accumulation (OBLA, fixed blood lactate concentration of 4 mmol x l(-1)). Measurements of blood lactate concentration differed between analysers (p < 0.0001), resulting in BLTT differing between analysers when expressed as a blood lactate concentration (p < 0.0001), or when the BLTT was defined as a fixed blood lactate concentration (e.g. OBLA) (p < 0.0001). When expressed as a power output or heart rate using BLTT based on relative changes in lactate concentration (log-log, ADAPT and DMAX thresholds) the values were similar between analysers (p > 0.05), except the Accusport provided higher values for the log-log lactate threshold (p < 0.0001). We concluded that, despite providing significantly different lactate concentrations, unless the Accusport was used to determine the log-log lactate threshold, or values were expressed as a blood lactate concentration, the use of different analysers had little effect on the BLTT.

In this study we investigated the effect of pedal cadence on the cycling economy, accumulated oxygen deficit (AOD), maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) and blood lactate transition thresholds of ten high-performance junior endurance cyclists [mean (SD): 17.4 (0.4) years; 183.8 (3.5) cm, 71.56 (3.75) kg]. Cycling economy was measured on three ergometers with the specific cadence requirements of: 90-100 rpm for the road dual chain ring (RDCR90-100 rpm) ergometer, 120-130 rpm for the track dual chain ring (TDCR120-130 rpm) ergometer, and 90-130 rpm for the track single chain ring (TSCR90-130 rpm) ergometer. AODs were then estimated using the regression of oxygen consumption (VO2) on power output for each of these ergometers, in conjunction with the data from a 2-min supramaximal paced effort on the TSCR90-130 rpm ergometer. A regression of VO2 on power output for each ergometer resulted in significant differences (P<0.001) between the slopes and intercepts that produced a lower AOD for the RDCR90-100 rpm [2.79 (0.43) l] compared with those for the TDCR120-130 rpm [4.11 (0.78) l] and TSCR90-130 rpm [4.06 (0.84) l]. While there were no statistically significant VO2max differences (P = 0.153) between the three treatments [RDCR90-100 rpm: 5.31 (0.24) l x min(-1); TDCR120-130 rpm; 5.33 (0.25) 1 x min(-1); TSCR90-130 rpm: 5.44 (0.27) l x min(-1)], all pairwise comparisons of the power output at which VO2max occurred were significantly different (P<0.001). Statistically significant differences were identified between the RDCR90-100 rpm and TDCR120-130 rpm tests for power output (P = 0.003) and blood lactate (P = 0.003) at the lactate threshold (Thla-), and for power output (P = 0.005) at the individual anaerobic threshold (Thiat). Our findings emphasise that pedal cadence specificity is essential when assessing the cycling economy, AOD and blood lactate transition thresholds of high-performance junior endurance cyclists.

Investigation of the impact of environmental stimuli such as altitude exposure on hemoglobin mass currently rely on invasive techniques that require venous blood sampling. This study assessed the feasibility of lancet skin pricks as an alternative to venepuncture to estimate hemoglobin mass with the carbon monoxide (CO) dilution technique, with the intent of making the technique accessible to technicians without phlebotomy training. Sixteen healthy volunteers rebreathed CO via a small-volume rebreathing apparatus. Blood was sampled simultaneously with a glass syringe (VEN) from a superficial forearm vein and with a capillary tube from either a lanced fingertip or earlobe (CAP). As a control, VEN blood was then aliquoted into capillary tubes (CONTROL-CAP). Samples were assayed for carboxy-hemoglobin (HbCO) using a diode-array spectrophotometer. Mean %HbCO was higher in CAP than VEN (bias 0.3+/-0.2%HbCO, p < 0.01), but VEN and CONTROL-CAP were not different (p = 0.55). Compared to VEN, Hb mass derived from CAP samples was overestimated by 1.7% (15+/-22 g Hb, p = 0.01). CAP samples to estimate Hb mass demonstrated a technical error of measurement of 2.7%, which is comparable to the 1.9% reported previously with VEN samples. We conclude that using CAP samples gives a reliable measure of %HbCO, and will make the estimation of Hb mass with the CO-technique accessible to technicians without phlebotomy training.

This study examined the effect of mild hypobaria (MH) on the peak oxygen consumption (VO2peak) and performance of ten trained male athletes [x (SEM); VO2peak = 72.4 (2.2) ml x kg(-1) x min(-1)] and ten trained female athletes [VO2peak = 60.8 (2.1) ml x kg(-1) x min(-1)]. Subjects performed 5-min maximal work tests on a cycle ergometer within a hypobaric chamber at both normobaria (N, 99.33 kPa) and at MH (92.66 kPa), using a counter-balanced design. MH was equivalent to 580 m altitude. VO2peak at MH decreased significantly compared with N in both men [-5.9 (0.9)%] and women [-3.7 (1.0)%]. Performance (total kJ) at MH was also reduced significantly in men [-3.6 (0.8)%] and women [-3.8 (1.2)%]. Arterial oxyhaemoglobin saturation (SaO2) at VO2peak was significantly lower at MH compared with N in both men [90.1 (0.6)% versus 92.0 (0.6)%] and women [89.7 (3.1)% versus 92.1 (3.0)%]. While SaO2 at VO2peak was not different between men and women, it was concluded that relative, rather than absolute. VO2peak may be a more appropriate predictor of exercise-induced hypoxaemia. For men and women, it was calculated that 67-76% of the decrease in VO2peak could be accounted for by a decrease in O2 delivery, which indicates that reduced O2 tension at mild altitude (580 m) leads to impairment of exercise performance in a maximal work bout lasting approximately 5 min.

This study examined the relationship between the time required to fully utilise the maximal accumulated oxygen deficit (MAOD) and event specificity of track cyclists. Twelve track endurance and 6 sprint high performance track cyclists performed four treatments of 70 s, 120 s, 300 s and 115% VO2max of maximal cycling on an air-braked ergometer. Peak blood lactate was measured immediately after each test with VO2 kinetics being assessed during the 115% VO2max time to exhaustion test. When the two cycling groups were combined there was no significant difference in the MAOD when assessed under the four different exercise durations. However, when the groups were analysed separately the following results were apparent: (1) the sprint cyclists achieved a significantly greater MAOD (66.9 +/- 2.2 ml.kg-1) compared to the track endurance cyclists (57.6 +/- 6.7 ml.kg-1) when a 70 s test duration was employed (2) even though the track endurance cyclists achieved their greatest MAOD during the 300 s test protocol (62.1 +/- 11.0 ml.kg-1), it was not significantly different to the MAOD's measured during the three other test durations and (3) the sprint cyclists recorded their greatest MAOD during the 70 s supramaximal test protocol (66.9 +/- 2.2 ml.kg-1). This was not significantly different to the 120 s test MAOD, but it was significantly higher than the MAOD values recorded during the 115% VO2max and 300 s test durations. There was no significant difference between the two groups in the peak post-exercise blood lactate concentrations for any of the tests and only the 70 s test produced a significant correlation between peak blood lactate and the MAOD. The VO2 kinetics (VO2 t1/2) of the sprinters was significantly slower than that of the track endurance cyclists (26.3 +/- 2.3 vs 23.9 +/- 2.8 s.). The findings of this study demonstrate that sprint cyclists can fully express their anaerobic capacity within an event specific 70 s all-out test and that these cyclists progressively decrease their anaerobic capacity during a 120 s, 115% VO2max (mean time = 210 s) or 300 s test, despite giving all-out efforts. Conversely, track endurance cyclists achieve their highest mean score during an event specific 300 s test and their lowest during a 70 s test. These findings have important implications when testing high performance cyclists for determination of MAOD, with the implication that it is necessary to assess MAOD under exercise conditions (i.e., duration, pacing) specific to the cyclist's chosen event.

The sweat rate, heart rate and core temperature as well as urinary volume, osmolarity, electrolyte concentration and pH of 20 cricketers were measured under cool, warm and hot conditions with wet bulb globe temperature indices of 22.1, 24.5 and 27.1, respectively. Simulated match conditions were used on the cool and warm days, while 3 bowlers were measured under actual match conditions on the hot day. The tendency for higher heart rate, sweat rate and renal conservation of water and sodium on the warm day compared with the cool day is consistent with increasing thermoregulatory stress under relatively moderate environmental conditions. The average dehydration of the three fast bowlers was -4.3% of initial body mass after only two sessions of play, on the hot day. This level of dehydration is sufficient to impair physical performance. These results suggest that the adverse effects of dehydration could be minimised if the rules of cricket were amended to allow players the opportunity to drink as desired when the environmental conditions are extreme.
