Background: Few studies have studied the efficacy of using immersive virtual reality (iVR) to teach surgical skills, especially by using real-world iVR recordings rather than simulations. This study aimed to investigate whether viewing 360° iVR instructional recordings produces greater improvements in basic suturing skills of students without prior medical training, beyond traditional methods like reading written manuals or watching 2D instructional videos. Materials and methods: This was a partially blinded randomized cohort study. 44 pre-university students (aged 17) were randomized equally to either the written instruction manual, 2D instructional video, or iVR recordings. All students first watched a silent 2D demonstration video of the suturing task, before attempting to place three simple interrupted sutures on a piece of meat as a baseline. The time taken for the first attempt was recorded. Students were then given an hour to train using their allocated modality. They attempted the suturing task again, and timings were re-recorded. Four blinded surgically-trained judges independently assessed the quality of the stitches placed both pre and post-intervention. One-way analysis of variance tests (ANOVAs) and independent two-sample t-tests were used to determine the effect of training modality on improvements in suturing scores and time taken to complete suturing from pre to post-training. Results: For suturing scores, the iVR group showed significantly larger score improvements than the Written Manual group (p = 0.031, Cohen's D = 0.92), while this iVR advantage was less pronounced when compared with the 2D Video group (p = 0.16, Cohen's D = 0.65). Similarly for time taken to complete suturing, the iVR group had significantly larger time improvements than the Written Manual group (p = 0.045), although this difference was less robust compared to the 2D Instructional Video group (p = 0.34). Conclusion: This study demonstrates that iVR training using real-world 360° instructional recordings produced significantly greater training gains in suturing scores and efficiency compared to reading written text. iVR training also led to larger training gains in both outcome measures than viewing 2D instructional videos, although the differences between them did not reach statistical significance.

Epitranscriptomic RNA modifications have emerged as important regulators of the fate and function of viral RNAs. One prominent modification, the cytidine methylation 5-methylcytidine (m5C), is found on the RNA of HIV-1, where m5C enhances the translation of HIV-1 RNA. However, whether m5C functionally enhances the RNA of other pathogenic viruses remains elusive. Here, we surveyed a panel of commonly found RNA modifications on the RNA of hepatitis B virus (HBV) and found that HBV RNA is enriched with m5C as well as ten other modifications, at stoichiometries much higher than host messenger RNA (mRNA). Intriguingly, m5C is mostly found on the epsilon hairpin, an RNA element required for viral RNA encapsidation and reverse transcription, with these m5C mainly deposited by the cellular methyltransferase NSUN2. Loss of m5C from HBV RNA due to NSUN2 depletion resulted in a partial decrease in viral core protein (HBc) production, accompanied by a near-complete loss of the reverse transcribed viral DNA. Similarly, mutations introduced to remove the methylated cytidines resulted in a loss of HBc production and reverse transcription. Furthermore, pharmacological disruption of m5C deposition led to a significant decrease in HBV replication. Thus, our data indicate m5C methylations as a critical mediator of the epsilon elements' function in HBV virion production and reverse transcription, suggesting the therapeutic potential of targeting the m5C methyltransfer process on HBV epsilon as an antiviral strategy.

This work presents a series of novel quinoidal organic semiconductors based on diselenophene-dithioalkylthiophene (DSpDST) conjugated cores with various side-chain lengths (-thiohexyl, -thiodecyl, and -thiotetradecyl, designated DSpDSTQ-6, DSpDSTQ-10, and DSpDSTQ-14, respectively). The purpose of this research is to develop solution-processable organic semiconductors using dicyanomethylene end-capped organic small molecules for organic field effect transistors (OFETs) application. The physical, electrochemical, and electrical properties of these new DSpDSTQs are systematically studied, along with their performance in OFETs and thin film morphologies. Additionally, the molecular structures of DSpDSTQ are determined through density functional theory (DFT) calculations and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The results reveal the presence of intramolecular S (alkyl)···Se (selenophene) interactions, which result in a planar SR-containing DSpDSTQ core, thereby promoting extended π-orbital interactions and efficient charge transport in the OFETs. Moreover, the influence of thioalkyl side chain length on surface morphologies and microstructures is investigated. Remarkably, the compound with the shortest thioalkyl chain, DSpDSTQ-6, demonstrates ambipolar carrier transport with the highest electron and hole mobilities of 0.334 and 0.463 cm2 V-1 s-1 , respectively. These findings highlight the excellence of ambipolar characteristics of solution-processable OFETs based on DSpDSTQs even under ambient conditions.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to develop preprocedural real-time artificial intelligence (AI)-based systems for predicting individualized risks of contrast-associated acute kidney injury (CA-AKI) and dialysis requirement within 30 days following contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT). METHOD: This single-center, retrospective study analyzed adult patients from emergency or in-patient departments who underwent CECT; 18,895 patients were included after excluding those who were already on dialysis, had stage V chronic kidney disease, or had missing data regarding serum creatinine levels within 7 days before and after CECT. Clinical parameters, laboratory data, medication exposure, and comorbid diseases were selected as predictive features. The patients were randomly divided into model training and testing groups at a 7:3 ratio. Logistic regression (LR) and random forest (RF) were employed to create prediction models, which were evaluated using receiver operating characteristic curves. RESULTS: The incidence rates of CA-AKI and dialysis within 30 days post-CECT were 6.69% and 0.98%, respectively. For CA-AKI prediction, LR and RF exhibited similar performance, with areas under curve (AUCs) of 0.769 and 0.757, respectively. For 30-day dialysis prediction, LR (AUC, 0.863) and RF (AUC, 0.872) also exhibited similar performance. Relative to eGFR-alone, the LR and RF models produced significantly higher AUCs for CA-AKI prediction (LR vs. eGFR alone, 0.769 vs. 0.626, p < 0.001) and 30-day dialysis prediction (RF vs. eGFR alone, 0.872 vs. 0.738, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The proposed AI prediction models significantly outperformed eGFR-alone for predicting the CA-AKI and 30-day dialysis risks of emergency department and hospitalized patients who underwent CECT.

A Sonogashira coupling reaction leads to the formation of a serendipitous product C with the 3,3'-(ethane-1,2-diylidene)bis(indolin-2-one) unit. To our knowledge, our study provides the first example demonstrating that electron transfer between isoindigo and triethylamine can be thermally activated and can be employed in synthesis. The physical properties of C suggest that it possesses decent photo-induced electron-transfer capabilities. Under the illumination of 136 mW cm-2 intensity, C yields ≈2.4 mmol gcat -1 (per gram of catalyst) of CH4 and ≈0.5 mmol gcat -1 of CO in 20 h in the absence of additional metal, co-catalyst, and amine sacrificial agent. The primary kinetic isotope effect suggests that the bond cleavage of water is a rate-determining step in the reduction. Moreover, the CH4 and CO production can be boosted as the illuminance increases. This study demonstrates that organic donor-acceptor conjugated molecules are potential photocatalysts for CO2 reduction.

With advancements in cardiopulmonary rehabilitation over the past few decades, the survival rate of patients with congenital heart disease (CHD) has increased. However, the Cardiopulmonary fitness (CPF) of these patients is poor. Here, we aimed to investigate CPF in preschoolers with CHD (aged 4 to 6 years) using cardiopulmonary exercise testing. We retrospectively compared 102 healthy preschoolers with 80 preschoolers with CHD. The latter had lower peak oxygen consumption, oxygen consumption at anaerobic threshold and metabolic equivalent at anaerobic threshold. The same result was observed in boys with CHD, but not in girls, when sex was sub-analyzed. Considering the body composition, children with CHD had a lower fat-free mass index (FFMI) than their healthy peers. Healthy preschoolers with a normal body mass index (BMI) had higher anaerobic threshold and peak metabolic equivalent values than overweight or underweight children. This was categorized under the BMI reference of the Ministry of Health and Welfare in Taiwan. In conclusion, the CPF difference between the CHD and healthy groups was identified as early as in preschool age, and better CPF in healthy preschoolers within the normal BMI range suggests the importance of weight control in young children.

Flexible optoelectronics have garnered considerable interest for applications such as optical communication, motion capture, biosignal detection, and night vision. Transition-metal dichalcogenides are widely used as flexible photodetectors owing to their outstanding electrical and optical properties and high flexibility. Herein, a two-dimensional (2D) Sb2Se3 film-based one transistor-one resistor (1T1R) flexible photodetector with high photosensing current and detection ranges from visible to near-infrared was developed. The flexible 1T1R was fabricated using an efficient field-effect transistor platform with the 2D Sb2Se3 film directly deposited on the sensing region using a low-temperature plasma-assisted chemical vapor reaction. The photodetector could achieve a maximum Iphoto/Idark of 15,000 under white light with a power density of 26 mW/cm2, in which the photodetector showed quick rising and falling response times of 0.16 and 0.28 s, respectively. The 2D Sb2Se3 film exhibits broadband absorption in the visible and IR regions, yielding an excellent photoresponse under laser illumination with different wavelengths. To investigate the flexibility and stability of the 1T1R photodetector, the photoresponses were measured under different bending cycles and curvatures, which maintained its functions and exhibited high stability under convex and concave bending at a curvature radius of 20 mm.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is among the most prevalent visceral neoplasms. So far, reliable biomarkers for predicting HCC recurrence in patients undergoing surgery are far from adequate. In the aim of searching for genetic biomarkers involved in HCC development, we performed analyses of cDNA microarrays and found that the DNA repair gene NEIL3 was remarkably overexpressed in tumors. NEIL3 belongs to the Fpg/Nei protein superfamily, which contains DNA glycosylase activity required for the base excision repair for DNA lesions. Notably, the other Fpg/Nei family proteins NEIL1 and NEIL2, which have the same glycosylase activity as NEIL3, were not elevated in HCC; NEIL3 was specifically induced to participate in HCC development independently of its glycosylase activity. Using RNA-seq and invasion/migration assays, we found that NEIL3 elevated the expression of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) factors, including the E/N-cadherin switch and the transcription of MMP genes, and promoted the invasion, migration, and stemness phenotypes of HCC cells. Moreover, NEIL3 directly interacted with the key EMT player TWIST1 to enhance invasion and migration activities. In mouse orthotopic HCC studies, NEIL3 overexpression also caused a prominent E-cadherin decrease, tumor volume increase, and lung metastasis, indicating that NEIL3 led to EMT and tumor metastasis in mice. We further found that NEIL3 induced the transcription of MDR1 (ABCB1) and BRAF genes through the canonical E-box (CANNTG) promoter region, which the TWIST1 transcription factor recognizes and binds to, leading to the BRAF/MEK/ERK pathway-mediated cell proliferation as well as anti-cancer drug resistance, respectively. In the HCC cohort, the tumor NEIL3 level demonstrated a high positive correlation with disease-free and overall survival after surgery. In conclusion, NEIL3 activated the BRAF/MEK/ERK/TWIST pathway-mediated EMT and therapeutic resistances, leading to HCC progression. Targeted inhibition of NEIL3 in HCC individuals with NEIL3 induction is a promising therapeutic approach. © 2022 The Pathological Society of Great Britain and Ireland.

Hybrid natural products produced via mixed biosynthetic pathways are unique and often surprise one with unexpected medicinal properties in addition to their fascinating structural complexity/diversity. In view of chemical structures, hybridization is a way of diversifying natural products usually through dimerization of two similar or dissimilar subcomponents through a C-C or N-C covalent linkage. Here, we report four structurally attractive diterpene-alkaloid conjugates polyalongarins A-D (1-4), clerodane-containing aporphine and proaporphine alkaloids, the first of its kind from the barks of Taiwanese Polyalthia longifolia (Sonn.) Thwaites var. pendula. In addition to conventional spectroscopic analysis, single crystal X-ray crystallography was employed to determine the chemical structures and stereo-configurations of 1. Compounds 1-4 were subsequently subjected to in vitro antiviral examination against DENV2 by evaluating the expression level of the NS2B protein in DENV2-infected Huh-7 cells. These compounds display encouraging anti-DENV2 activity with superb EC50 (2.8-6.4 µM) and CC50 values (50.4-200 µM). The inhibitory mechanism of 1-4 on NS2B was further explored drawing on in-silico molecular docking analysis. Based on calculated binding affinities and predicted interactions between the functional groups of 1-4 and the allosteric-site residues of the DENV2 NS2B-NS3 protease, our analysis concludes that the clerodane-aporphine/proaporphine-type hybrids are novel and effective DENV NS2B-NS3 protease inhibitors.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairments, the main determinants of functional outcomes in schizophrenia, had limited treatment responses and need a better understanding of the mechanisms. Dysfunctions of the dopamine system and N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor (NMDAR), the primary pathophysiologies of schizophrenia, may impair cognition. This study explored the effects and interactions of striatal dopamine transporter (DAT) and plasma NMDAR-related amino acids on cognitive impairments in schizophrenia. METHODS: We recruited 36 schizophrenia patients and 36 age- and sex-matched healthy controls (HC). All participants underwent cognitive assessments of attention, memory, and executive function. Single-photon emission computed tomography with 99mTc-TRODAT and ultra-performance liquid chromatography were applied to determine DAT availability and plasma concentrations of eight amino acids, respectively. RESULTS: Compared with HC, schizophrenia patients had lower cognitive performance, higher methionine concentrations, decreased concentrations of glutamic acid, cysteine, aspartic acid, arginine, the ratio of glutamic acid to gamma-aminobutyric acid (Glu/GABA), and DAT availability in the left caudate nucleus (CN) and putamen. Regarding memory scores, Glu/GABA and the DAT availability in left CN and putamen exhibited positive relationships, while methionine concentrations showed negative associations in all participants. The DAT availability in left CN mediated the methionine-memory relationship. An exploratory backward stepwise regression analysis for the four biological markers associated with memory indicated that DAT availability in left CN and Glu/GABA remained in the final model. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated the interactions of striatal DAT and NMDAR-related amino acids on cognitive impairments in schizophrenia. Future studies to comprehensively evaluate their complex interactions and treatment implications are warranted.

The application of organic small molecules as metal-free photocatalysts for light-driven photoreduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) has seldom been explored. This work developed four naphthalene diimide (NDI)-derived donor-acceptor-donor small molecules with different numbers of thiophene units, namely, NDI-2T, NDI-TT, NDI-4T, and NDI-6T, as metal-free photocatalysts to catalyze the reduction of CO2 under irradiation with an air mass 1.5G solar simulator at one-sun intensity. The structure-property relationship was investigated by exploring the effects of the electron-donating ability of the donor units on the optical properties, redox potential, electron-hole distribution, and exciton lifetime. NDI-6T exhibited the most red-shifted absorption, longest exciton lifetime, and strongest electron-hole separation. However, the large upshift in oxidation potential because of the elevated electron-donating ability of the hexathiophene unit significantly reduced the driving force for catalyst regeneration, leading to poor catalytic performance. Alternatively, NDI-4T possessed proper redox potentials, reduced charge-transfer resistance, and excellent photocurrent intensity; therefore, it effectively converted CO2 to a single product of CO in the presence of water as an electron donor without a sacrificial reagent or cocatalyst with a product yield of 168.6 µmol gcat-1 24 h-1, which was considerably higher than those of NDI-TT (111.9 µmol gcat-1 24 h-1), NDI-2T (88.4 µmol gcat-1 24 h-1), and NDI-6T (40.5 µmol gcat-1 24 h-1). This study provides a practical guideline for the molecular design of conjugated organic molecules as promising photocatalysts for CO2 photoreduction.

Diabetic wounds exhibit chronic inflammation and delayed tissue proliferation or remodeling, mainly owing to prolonged proinflammatory (M1) macrophage activity and defects in transition to prohealing/proremodeling (M2a/M2c; CD206+ and/or CD163+) macrophages. We found that topical treatment with ON101, a plant-based potential therapeutic for diabetic foot ulcers, increased M2c-like (CD163+ and CD206+) cells and suppressed M1-like cells, altering the inflammatory gene profile in a diabetic mouse model compared with that in the controls. An in vitro macrophage-polarizing model revealed that ON101 directly suppressed CD80+ and CD86+ M1-macrophage polarization and M1-associated proinflammatory cytokines at both protein and transcriptional levels. Notably, conditioned medium collected from ON101-treated M1 macrophages reversed the M1-conditioned medium‒mediated suppression of CD206+ macrophages. Furthermore, conditioned medium from ON101-treated adipocyte progenitor cells significantly promoted CD206+ and CD163+ macrophages but strongly inhibited M1-like cells. ON101 treatment also stimulated the expression of GCSF and CXCL3 genes in human adipocyte progenitor cells. Interestingly, treatment with recombinant GCSF protein enhanced both CD206+ and CD163+ M2 markers, whereas CXCL3 treatment only stimulated CD163+ M2 macrophages. Depletion of cutaneous M2 macrophages inhibited ON101-induced diabetic wound healing. Thus, ON101 directly suppressed M1 macrophages and facilitated the GCSF- and CXCL3-mediated transition from M1 to M2 macrophages, lowering inflammation and leading to faster diabetic wound healing.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: We examined the association between statin use and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) incidence in patients with diabetes using marginal structural models (MSMs) estimated by inverse probability weight (IPW), which adjusts for time-varying confounders that are also mediators, and we compared the results with conventional regression methods. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 245,122 patients with type 2 diabetes who were new users of lipid-lowering drugs identified using the claims data of a universal health insurance program. Statin exposure was time-updated every three months during the follow-up period. Stabilized IPW was calculated and accounted for chronic liver diseases considering as time-dependent confounders affected by past statin exposure. RESULTS: Over a median follow-up of 5.2 years, 1,694 patients developed HCC. In the conventional regression analysis, the hazard ratio of HCC associated with statin use was 0.88 (95% confidence interval CI: 0.79-0.97) after adjusting for baseline covariates and 0.97 (95% CI: 0.87-1.08) after additionally adjusting for time-varying covariates. The hazard ratio increased to 1.11 (95% CI: 0.94-1.31) using the MSM approach. CONCLUSION: Statin use was not associated with the risk of developing HCC in patients with diabetes. Our findings highlight the importance of controlling time-varying confounders in observational studies.

Hemorrhagic stroke is a serious clinical condition that requires timely diagnosis. An artificial intelligence algorithm system called DeepCT can identify hemorrhagic lesions rapidly from non-contrast head computed tomography (NCCT) images and has received regulatory clearance. A non-controlled retrospective pilot clinical trial was conducted. Patients who received NCCT at the emergency department (ED) of Kaohsiung Veteran General Hospital were collected. From 2020 January-1st to April-30th, the physicians read NCCT images without DeepCT. From 2020May-1st to August-31st, the physicians were assisted by DeepCT. The length of ED stays (LOS) for the patients was collected. 2,999 patients were included (188 and 2811 with and without ICH). For patients with a final diagnosis of ICH, implementing DeepCT significantly shortened their LOS (560.67 ± 604.93 min with DeepCT vs. 780.83 ± 710.27 min without DeepCT; p = 0.0232). For patients with a non-ICH diagnosis, the LOS did not significantly differ (705.90 ± 760.86 min with DeepCT vs. 679.45 ± 681.97 min without DeepCT; p = 0.3362). For patients with ICH, those assisted with DeepCT had a significantly shorter LOS than those without DeepCT. For patients with a non-ICH diagnosis, implementing DeepCT did not affect the LOS, because emergency physicians need same efforts to identify the underlying problem(s) with or without DeepCT. In summary, implementing DeepCT system in the ED will save costs, decrease LOS, and accelerate patient flow; most importantly, it will improve the quality of care and increase the confidence and shorten the response time of the physicians and radiologists.

Surgery-related isolated proximal median neuropathy is a rare complication. Brachial plexus injury is a possible complication after major cardiac surgery; however, isolated mononeuropathy is less frequently documented. We present an unusual case of isolated proximal median neuropathy after aortic dissection repair surgery in a 39-year-old man. Electrodiagnostic study and ultrasound examinations helped in localizing the lesion to the axillary region. Serial follow-ups showed improvement in electrodiagnostic parameters, which were compatible with clinical symptoms. Partial recovery was achieved at the seventh month follow-up. This case report aimed to increase awareness of nerve stretching during open heart surgery and demonstrate the diagnosis and clinical follow-up by concomitant use of electrodiagnostic and nerve ultrasound studies.

Objectives: Veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is increasingly used to treat high-risk pulmonary embolism (PE). However, its efficacy and safety remain uncertain. This retrospective cohort study aimed to determine whether ECMO could improve the clinical outcomes of patients with high-risk PE. Methods: Forty patients with high-risk PE, who were admitted to Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital between January 2012 and December 2019, were included in this study. Demographic data and clinical outcomes were compared between patients treated without ECMO (non-ECMO group) and those treated with ECMO (ECMO group). Appropriate statistical tools were used to compare variables between groups and the survival was analyzed using the Kaplan-Meier method. Results: The overall in-hospital mortality rate was 55%, in which 65% (26/40) of patients presented with cardiac arrest with a mortality rate of 77%, which was higher than that of patients without cardiac arrest (14%). There was no significant difference in major complications and in-hospital mortality between the non-ECMO and ECMO groups. However, in subgroup analysis, compared with patients treated without ECMO, earlier ECMO treatment was associated with a reduced risk of cardiac arrest (P = 0.023) and lower in-hospital mortality (P = 0.036). A log-rank test showed a significantly higher cumulative overall survival in the earlier ECMO treatment group (P = 0.033). Conclusions: In this retrospective cohort study, earlier ECMO treatment was associated with lower in-hospital mortality among unstable patients without cardiac arrest. Our findings suggest that ECMO can be considered as an initial treatment option for patients with high-risk PE in higher-volume hospitals.

OBJECTIVE: Difficult airway situations, such as trismus and neck rigidity, may prohibit standard midline orotracheal intubation. An alternative route of intubation from the retromolar space using a fiberoptic scope or rigid intubation stylet has been reported. There is no study investigating the applicability of retromolar intubation using a video intubating stylet. This study comparatively analyzed difficult airway management using a video intubating stylet in the retromolar and standard midline approaches. METHODS: A randomized crossover manikin study was conducted between January 2021 and June 2021 at a tertiary teaching hospital. Thirty-six emergency medicine residents and attending physicians were enrolled, and all participated in an educational course regarding video intubating stylet in standard midline and retromolar approaches. Then, they performed both intubation approaches in a randomized order on a manikin seven times with different airway settings each time. The duration of successful intubation, first attempt success rate, overall success rate, number of attempts, and self-reported difficulty were recorded and compared. RESULTS: Thirty-six emergency physicians were included in the study. Compared with the standard midline approach, the use of the retromolar approach significantly reduced the duration of successful intubation in difficult airway scenarios such as limited mouth opening and neck rigidity with (44.77 [28.58-63.65] vs. 120 [93.86-120] s, p < 0.001) and without tongue edema (31.5 [22.57-57.74] vs. 44.72 [36.23-65.34] s, p = 0.012). Furthermore, the retromolar approach increased the first attempt success rate in scenarios of limited mouth opening and neck rigidity with (91.67% vs. 16.67%, p < 0.001) and without (97.22% vs. 72.22%, p = 0.012) tongue edema. The self-reported difficulty was also significantly lower with the retromolar approach than with the standard approach in the above two scenarios. CONCLUSIONS: The retromolar approach for intubation using a video intubating stylet may be a promising choice for selected patients with a combination of difficult airway features such as limited mouth opening, neck rigidity, and edematous tongue.

Objectives: Computed tomography (CT) has been increasingly used in the diagnosis of acute aortic syndrome, and a number of high-risk CT imaging features have been reported. We aimed to identify CT imaging findings suggesting high-risk for acute aortic syndrome by examining clinical outcomes of patients with acute type A aortic intramural hematoma (TAIMH). Methods: This retrospective study analyzed the relationship of clinical patient characteristics and imaging features with mortality and aortic events in 63 patients receiving initial medical treatment for TAIMH. Multivariate regression analysis was used to determine the predictors of aortic events, and the Kaplan-Meier method was used to analyze survival and aortic events. Results: During a median follow-up of 4.2 years, 25 patients experienced aortic events and 40% of these occurred within 7 days of admission. In total, 12 patients experienced aortic death and 12 patients underwent open aortic surgery or endovascular stenting for aortic disease. In multivariate regression analysis, penetrating atherosclerotic ulcers (PAUs) or ulcer-like projections (ULPs) (P = 0.04) and pericardial effusion (P = 0.03) were independent predictors of aortic events. In the Cox regression model, PAUs/ULPs (P = 0.04) and pericardial effusion (P = 0.04) were independently associated with lower aortic event-free survival. Conclusion: Identification of high-risk CT features is important for clinical decision-making during TAIMH treatment. Early and frequent CT imaging follow-up is required in patients receiving medical treatment. PAUs/ULP and pericardial effusion were the strongest predictors of adverse aortic events.

The receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE) overexpression was suggested to be associated with prostate cancer development and poor prognosis. In this study, we focused on the correlations between the clinicopathological characteristics and susceptibility of prostate cancer and RAGE single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). In 579 prostate cancer patients, the RAGE SNPs rs1800625, rs1800624, rs2070600 and rs184003 in patients with or without grade group upgrade were analysed with real-time polymerase chain reaction. The results demonstrated that the prostate cancer patients who carried the RAGE SNPs rs2070600 'GA' genotypic variants were significantly associated with lower risk to develop grade group upgrade. Moreover, patients with the RAGE rs1800625 'TC + CC' genotypic variants were associated with higher risk of perineural invasion. In 343 prostate cancer patients who carried the RAGE rs1800625 'TC + CC' genotype without grade group upgrade were correlated with higher risk of biochemical recurrence and perineural invasion. In the analysis of TCGA database, significant differences of the RAGE mRNA level were found between the normal controls and prostate cancer patients (p < 0.0001), and the pathologic stage N1 and N0 patients (p = 0.0027). The prostate cancer patients with high RAGE expression were associated with lower overall survival rate (p = 0.025). In conclusion, our results have revealed that the RAGE SNPs rs2070600 and rs1800625 were associated with the grade group upgrade of prostate cancer and clinical status. The RAGE polymorphisms may provide as a pivotal predictor to evaluate prostate cancer disease progression and prognosis.
