RESUMO

The current study examined the relationships among temporal processing speed, spatial visual span and Chinese character reading speed in normal central and peripheral vision. Maximum reading speed (MRS) and critical print size (CPS) of 26 native Chinese readers (13 young and 13 older adults) were determined at three visual field locations: central vision, 10° left and 10° below fixation using a rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) task. Temporal processing speed was measured using trigrams of randomly selected Chinese characters presented at a range of exposure durations, while spatial visual span was measured using trigrams presented at different spatial positions. It was found that shorter temporal processing speed and larger spatial visual span were associated with faster MRS at the central and inferior visual field locations, but not at the left of fixation location. As expected, reading and visual span metrics were better in central vision compared to both peripheral locations. In addition, reading, temporal processing, and spatial visual span metrics were better in the young than older subjects (except for similar temporal processing speed at two peripheral locations). The results for central and inferior presentation locations support the hypothesis that temporal processing speed and spatial visual span were associated with Chinese character reading speed. Surprisingly, no correlation was observed for the 10° left of the fixation location, suggesting that the factors affecting reading speed might differ for inferior and lateral peripheral viewing locations.

RESUMO

Heroin use is closely associated with emotional dysregulation, which may explain its high comorbidity with disorders such as anxiety and depression. However, the understanding of the neurobiological etiology of the association between heroin use and emotional dysregulation is limited. Previous studies have suggested an impact of heroin on diffusivity in white matter involving the emotional regulatory system, but the specificity of this finding remains to be determined. Therefore, this study investigated the association between heroin use and diffusivity of white matter tracts in heroin users and examined whether the tracts were associated with their elevated anxiety and depression levels. A sample of 26 right-handed male abstinent heroin users (25 to 42 years of age) and 32 matched healthy controls (19 to 55 years of age) was recruited for this study. Diffusion tensor imaging data were collected, and their levels of anxiety and depression were assessed using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. Our findings indicated that heroin users exhibited higher levels of anxiety and depression, but the heroin use-associated left uncinate fasciculus was only related to their anxiety level, suggesting that association between heroin and anxiety has an incremental organic basis but that for depression could be a threshold issue. This finding improves our understanding of heroin addiction and its comorbid affective disorder and facilitates future therapeutic development.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES. To review the 10-year trend of reperfusion strategies in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction, and the adoption rate of percutaneous coronary interventions as opposed to thrombolytic therapy. Also to explore why some patients did not receive reperfusion therapy, and document changes in reperfusion strategies after the introduction of primary percutaneous coronary intervention programmes. DESIGN. Case series. SETTING. A regional hospital, Hong Kong. PATIENTS. All patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction from January 2000 to December 2009. RESULTS. There were 1835 patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction in that period, of which 1179 (64.3%) received reperfusion therapy (thrombolytic therapy, 46.0%; primary percutaneous coronary intervention, 17.5%; emergency coronary artery bypass graft, 0.7%). After introduction of the primary percutaneous coronary intervention programme, significantly more ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction cases underwent that particular intervention (1.6% in 2000 increasing to 30.6% in 2009), while the proportion receiving thrombolytic therapy declined (57.4% in 2000 decreasing to 35.0% in 2009). Seven reasons for no reperfusion therapy were identified. The commonest ones were delayed presentation (45.1%), succumbed before reperfusion (16.0%), multiple medical co-morbidities (15.2%), and contra-indication to thrombolytic therapy (14.8%). The proportion without reperfusion therapy due to a contra-indication to thrombolytic therapy declined (22.7% in 2000 decreasing to 4.9% to 2009), whilst an increasing proportion received primary percutaneous coronary interventions. CONCLUSIONS. Primary percutaneous coronary intervention is increasingly used as the reperfusion therapy in ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction and is replacing thrombolytic therapy, though the latter still remains a mainstay of therapy. A significant proportion of ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction cases received no reperfusion due to various reasons.

RESUMO

AIMS: To investigate the morphological and chemical changes in attached cells of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 14886) at different stages of biofilm development on two different types of substrata. METHODS AND RESULTS: The development of primary biofilm on aluminium plates representing metals and on CaF(2) discs representing dielectric materials was monitored by FTIR microscopy, ESEM, EDAX and protein analysis by SDS-PAGE. A unique cellular feature similar in morphology to pili was observed on the surface of P. aeruginosa adhering on aluminium but not on CaF(2). Results derived from FTIR analysis confirm on both substrata the successive importance of polysaccharides and proteins during the biofilm development. These results also revealed that the increase of the ratio of carboxylates to amide I was higher with the aluminium plates than with the CaF(2) discs. The number of cells adhered and the amount of oxygen incorporated in adhered cells on the latter materials were, respectively, less and almost nil in comparison with the former. Protein analysis of the lysates of cells by SDS-PAGE revealed that expression of one protein with a molecular weight of 45 kDa, was greatly enhanced in attached cells on both substrata. However, expression of another protein with molecular weight of 35 kDa was up-regulated only in cells adhering on CaF(2) but not in those on aluminium. CONCLUSION: Depending on the nature of the surface, new proteinaceous complexes and cellular features were formed in the attachment process of P. aeruginosa. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: The pattern of P. aeruginosa cells adhering onto CaF(2) discs and aluminium plates is different. Formation of biofilm is more difficult on CaF(2) than on aluminium.

RESUMO

A capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) method based on systematic one-variable-at-a time approach was developed for the analysis of four important bioactive components (geniposidic acid, ursolic acid, quercetin and p-coumaric acid) in the extract of Hedyotis diffusa (HD). Separations were carried out in a fused-silica capillary tube with peak detection at 214 nm. Good separation was achieved using a 20 mM borate buffer containing 5% acetonitrile as organic modifier and pH adjusted to 10.0. Operating voltage was 15 kV and temperature was maintained at 25 degrees C while hydrodynamic injection was 5s. A good linearity, with correlation coefficients in the ranges of 0.997-0.999 was obtained in the calibration curves of each standard. Relative standard deviation (R.S.D.) of migration time was between 0.32 and 0.70% and deviation of corrected peak area was between 8.84 and 11.99%. These results indicate that this method could be used for rapid and simultaneous analysis of the bioactive components in HD and other herbal products.

RESUMO

We report a study of the Mn local structure, magnetism, and Ga moments in molecular beam epitaxy grown Mn-doped GaN films. Using x-ray absorption spectroscopy and magnetic circular dichroism, we find two distinct Mn sites and a Ga moment antiparallel to Mn. First-principles calculations reproduce this phenomenology and indicate that Mn preferentially populates Ga sites neighboring N split interstitial defects. These results show that defects may strongly affect the Mn ordering and magnetism, and that the GaN valence band is polarized, providing a long-range ferromagnetic ordering mechanism for Ga1-xMnxN.

RESUMO

Selected molecular beam epitaxy of zinc blende (111) or wurtzite (0001) GaN films on polar MgO(111) is achieved depending on whether N or Ga is deposited first. The cubic stacking is enabled by nitrogen-induced polar surface stabilization, which yields a metallic MgO(111)-(1 x 1)-ON surface. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy and density functional theory studies indicate that the atomically abrupt semiconducting GaN(111)/MgO(111) interface has a Mg-O-N-Ga stacking, where the N atom is bonded to O at a top site. This specific atomic arrangement at the interface allows the cubic stacking to more effectively screen the substrate and film electric dipole moment than the hexagonal stacking, thus stabilizing the zinc blende phase even though the wurtzite phase is the ground state in the bulk.

RESUMO

A convenient and rapid method for screening and identifying rod mutants of Bacillus subtilis is described. At the restrictive temperature (45 degrees C), all rod mutants of B. subtilis screened lost their ability to sporulate. The morphology and colour of mutant colonies grown on sporulation agar plates differed from those of rod+ cells, which were able to sporulate even at elevated temperature. These characteristics provide an alternative approach for the identification of rod mutants in B. subtilis culture by streaking the cells onto a minimal glucose agar plate and incubating at the restrictive temperature. After 30 h of incubation at this temperature, rod mutants are easily identified. This method will facilitate the screening and isolation of rod mutants of B. subtilis.

RESUMO

Turkey's (1953, The Problem of Multiple Comparisons, unpublished report, Princeton University) procedure is widely used for pairwise multiple comparisons in one-way ANOVA. It provides exact simultaneous pairwise confidence intervals (SPCI) for balanced designs and conservative SPCI for unbalanced designs. In this paper, we will extend Turkey's procedure to two-way unbalanced designs. Both the exact and the conservative methods will be introduced. The application of the new procedure is illustrated with sample data from two experiments.

RESUMO

Cheung and Holland extended Dunnett's treatment versus control multiple comparison procedure to the case of several groups. Dunnett and Tamhane provided a step-down procedure more powerful than that of Dunnett for situations where the researcher's interest is in testing and not in simultaneous confidence interval estimation. In this paper we show how one can use the approach of Dunnett and Tamhane to devise a testing procedure for the multi-group problem with power greater than that of Cheung and Holland. We illustrate the new procedure with reanalyses of published data from a clinical experiment.

RESUMO

A human keratinocyte cell line was established by transfecting neonatal foreskin keratinocytes of a Chinese with human papillomavirus (HPV) 16 DNA. As evidenced by the prolonged life span, the clone formation from a single cell, the piling up after prolonged culturing without passage and the chromosomal aneuploidy, this cell line possesses the biological characteristics of immortalization. The reason for obligatory growth requirements on epidermal growth factor (EGF) is not clear. The partial growth requirement on hydrocortisone for this immortalized cell line suggests that the glucocorticoid responding element of HPV 16 may play a role in cell immortalization. The constant over-expression of keratin 19 in this and other HPV 16 immortalized squamous epithelia indicates that it may serve as a useful marker for the potential malignant transformation of squamous epithelial cells. This immortalized cell line provides a model for investigating the factors and cofactors involved in carcinogenesis and differentiation of human epithelial cells.
