RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy, safety, and economics of mecapegfilgrastim and recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (rhG-CSF) in the primary prevention of chemotherapy-related neutropenia in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data from 181 patients with NSCLC who received intermediate risk chemotherapy were collected from the information system of a tertiary hospital in China. Patients were categorized into two groups: those treated with mecapegfilgrastim (n = 91) and those treated with rhG-CSF (n = 90). The clinical efficacy rates of neutropenia prevention were used as effect indicators, and a cost-effectiveness analysis was conducted from the perspective of the Chinese healthcare system. Logistic regression, generalized linear regression, and bootstrap methods were used for sensitivity analyses. RESULTS: There was no statistical difference between the mecapegfilgrastim and rhG-CSF groups in clinical efficacy rates (98.9 vs. 97.8%). However, the total cost in the mecapegfilgrastim group was significantly higher than that in the rhG-CSF group (16,341.6 CNY vs. 14,371.1 CNY, p = 0.03). The cost-minimization analysis shows that mecapegfilgrastim is not cost-effective. The sensitivity analyses confirm that these results are robust. CONCLUSION: Compared with rhG-CSF, mecapegfilgrastim is not a cost-effective strategy for NSCLC patients in neutropenia prevention in China.

RESUMO

The underlying mechanism of fluorosis has not been fully elucidated. The purpose of this study was to explore the mechanism of fluorosis induced by sodium fluoride (NaF) using proteomics. Six offspring rats exposed to fluoride without dental fluorosis were defined as group A, 8 offspring rats without fluoride exposure were defined as control group B, and 6 offspring rats exposed to fluoride with dental fluorosis were defined as group C. Total proteins from the peripheral blood were extracted and then separated using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The identified criteria for differentially expressed proteins were fold change > 1.2 or < 0.83 and P < 0.05. Gene Ontology function annotation and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment analysis were performed using the oeCloud tool. The 177 upregulated and 22 downregulated proteins were identified in the A + C vs. B group. KEGG pathway enrichment analysis revealed that transforming growth factor-ß (TGF-ß) signaling pathway significantly enriched. PPI network constructed using Cytoscape confirmed RhoA may play a crucial role. The KEGG results of genes associated with fluoride and genes associated with both fluoride and inflammation in the GeneCards database also showed that TGF-ß signaling pathway was significantly enriched. The immunofluorescence in HPA database showed that the main expression sites of RhoA are plasma membrane and cytosol, while the main expression site of Fbn1 is the Golgi apparatus. In conclusion, long-term NaF intake may cause inflammatory response in the peripheral blood of rats by upregulating TGF-ß signaling pathway, in which RhoA may play a key role.

RESUMO

Objective: To assess the cost-effectiveness of nebulized budesonide and intravenous methylprednisolone in the treatment of acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD) in a real-world setting. Materials and methods: Data from 291 patients with AECOPD were collected from the information system of a tertiary hospital in China. Patients were categorized into two groups: those treated with nebulized budesonide (n = 148) and those treated with intravenous methylprednisolone (n = 143). Clinical efficacy and the rate of no readmission within 1 year after discharge were used as effect indicators, and a cost-effectiveness analysis was conducted from the perspective of the Chinese healthcare system. Logistic regression, generalized linear regression, and bootstrap methods were used for sensitivity analyses. Results: There was no statistical difference between the budesonide and methylprednisolone groups in clinical efficacy rates (94.6% vs. 93.7%). The cost-minimization analysis shows that budesonide is not cost-effective owing to higher total cost. In terms of readmission rates, budesonide was again not cost-effective, with an incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) of 22276.62 CNY, which is higher than the willingness to pay (WTP) of 20206.20 CNY, the mean per admission expenditure in China. The sensitivity analyses confirm that these results are robust. Conclusion: Compared with intravenous methylprednisolone, nebulized budesonide is not a cost-effective strategy for AECOPD patients in China.

RESUMO

The influence of alternating current (AC) electric field and KCl on the structure and gel properties of Konjac Glucomannan (KGM) were studied in this work by high-performance gel permeation chromatography (HPGPC), acid-base titration, solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), simultaneous differential scanning calorimetry/thermo gravimetric analyzer (DSC/TGA) and a rheometer. HPGPC showed KGM was degraded by AC electric field and Acid-base titration showed that under the action of AC electric field and KCl KGM removed part of acetyl groups, which were consistent with the analysis of NMR. XRD and temperature sweep measurements respectively showed that the electrotreatment time and KCl concentration had important effects on the gel formation and its three-dimensional network. Simultaneous DSC/TGA and temperature sweep measurements both demonstrated the gel had good thermal stability.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Predictors of recurrence in patients with lymph node-negative gastric cancer (GC) who have undergone curative resection have been widely investigated, but not the effects of predictors on timing of recurrence. OBJECTIVE: Determine the factors associated with early and late recurrence in patients with node-negative GC. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort. SETTING: Academic tertiary care center. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study included patients with node-negative GC after curative resection between 2008 and 2018 at two institutions. Early and late recurrences were determined using a minimum P value approach to evaluate the optimal cutoff for recurrence-free survival (RFS). A competing risk model and landmark analysis were used to analyze factors associated with early and late recurrences. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Recurrence-free survival and factors associated with survival. SAMPLE SIZE: 606. RESULTS: After a median follow-up of 70 months, 50 (8.3%) patients experienced recurrent disease. The optimal length of RFS for distinguishing between early (n=26) and late recurrence (n=24) was 24 months (P=.0013). The median RFS in the early and late recurrence groups was 11 and 32 months, respectively. Diffuse tumors (hazard ratio 3.358, P=.014), advanced T stage (HR 8.804, P=.003), perineural invasion (HR 10.955, P<.001), and anemia (HR 2.351, P=.018) were independent predictors of early recurrence. Mixed tumor location (HR 5.586, P=.002), advanced T stage (HR 5.066, P<.001), lymphovascular invasion (HR 5.902, P<.001), and elevated CA19-9 levels (HR 5.227, P<.001) were independent predictors of late recurrence. Similar results were obtained in the landmark analysis. CONCLUSIONS: Individualized therapeutic and follow-up strategies should be considered in future studies because of distinct patterns in predictors of early and late recurrence. LIMITATIONS: Retrospective design, small sample size. CONFLICT OF INTEREST: None.

RESUMO

To establish optimal elastic modulus distribution throughout the entire all-ceramic crown, aiming at improvement of the mechanical properties of the restoration as well as the adhesive interface, seven 3D models of mandibular first premolars of zirconia monolithic and bilayer crowns and lithium disilicate monolithic and bilayer crowns were constructed. The elastic modulus distribution of 8-layer crown A referred to human enamel, B was calculated by a genetic algorithm (GA) to minimize the principle stresses on the crown, and C minimized the shear stresses at the cementing lines. After applying a static load of 600 N, the maximum principle stresses were calculated and analyzed by finite element analysis (FEA). Group C were found to have the lowest peak shear stress at the cementing line and moderate peak tensile stress in the crown. Introduction of the modified elastic modulus distribution from human enamel into the entire all-ceramic crown reinforces the mechanical properties of the whole restoration as well as the adhesive interface against chipping and debonding.

RESUMO

To promote the application of lidar technology in estimating standing stocks of the typical conifer stands in Northeast China, i.e., spruce-fir forest, larch forest, Korean pine forest, Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica forest, we combined the point cloud data obtained by airborne lidar with the data of 800 ground plots and established models of standing stocks for the four conifer stands by stepwise regression and partial least square. Partial least squares method was better than stepwise regression method (R2=0.05-0.15, RRMSE=2.6%-4.2%). Among the three types of feature variables involved in modeling, height variable (selected for 26 times) is more important than others (selected for 12 times and 11 times, respectively). With respect to the accuracy of models established based on the means of the partial least square, they worked best for Korean pine forest (R2=0.79, RMSE=60.92, RRMSE=22.9%) and larch forest (R2=0.76, RMSE=28.39, RRMSE=25.8%), followed by spruce-fir forest (R2=0.81, RMSE=46.96, RRMSE=27.7%) and P. sylvestris var. mongolica forest (R2=0.50, RMSE=55.49, RRMSE=30.4%). This study provi-ded an effective way to estimate standing stocks of four typical conifer stands in Northeast China.

RESUMO

It's important to master tree species composition and distribution in forests for the study of forest ecosystems. To promote the application of domestic Gaofen data in the classification of tree species and to explore the effects of different combining images, classification features and classifier on tree species classification results, three kinds of single temporal data and four kinds of multi-temporal data were constructed. Based on three GF-2 images, according to the multi-scale segmentation, C5.0 feature optimization as well as two classifiers including support vector machine (SVM) and random forest (RF), we finished the object-based classification of eight tree species of different temporal and feature dimensions respectively, and finally achieved good results with overall accuracy between 63.5% and 83.5% and the Kappa coefficient between 0.57 and 0.81. The results showed that the choice of temporal stage would affect the classification results. The results based on multi-temporal were generally better than that on single temporal stage. There were obvious precision differences between different image combinations of multi-temporal as well as different single temporal stage. It is notable that feature optimization played a positive role in the improvement of classification accuracy. SVM was relatively stable across different temporal and feature dimensions, which should be given priority when single temporal and classification features are difficult to distinguish tree species directly, while it should be noted that SVM was easy to overfit. RF was not easy to overfit, but it was more dependent on the quality of classification features and would get good results under favorable image combination.

RESUMO

To promote the application of domestic high-resolution satellite data in large-scale carbon storage estimation and measurement, a total of 206 high-resolution remote sensing images covering Hunan Province were used as the data source, and the estimated minimum unit was fixed as a 0.06 hm2 square composed of multiple pixels. Through the establishment and purification of the interpretation marks, in the extraction of forest information, the pixel-based method and object-oriented classification method were used to compare. In the estimation of carbon storage of arbor forest, the robust estimate, partial least squares method and k-NN estimate were used to compare. Finally, we estimated forest carbon storage in Hunan Province and generated the distribution map of carbon density levels. The results showed that the interpretation mark based on the automatic extraction of plots could increase the extraction accuracy of arbor forest after purification. For the estimation of forest carbon storage at large-scale, the k-NN algorithm embodied a large advantage in forest information extraction and arbor forest carbon storage modeling. The average classification accuracy of the 206 scene images was 76.8%, the average RMSE was 8.95 t·hm-2, the average RRMSE was 19.1%, and the total carbon stock in Hunan Province was 22.28 Mt. The results provided effective reference for the estimation and measurement of forest carbon storage at the provincial and national scales.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To identify the conditions under which fabrication pore defects within veneering porcelain in bilayered lithium disilicate glass-ceramic (LDG) crowns will influence and jeopardize the mechanical integrity of the structure. METHODS: Thirty standardized molar crowns (IPS e.max Press) were fabricated and microCT scanned to 3D-analyze the size, morphology and distribution of pores in veneering porcelain, followed by in vitro fracture test and SEM fractographic observation. Finite element analysis (FEA) of the microCT reconstructed models was used to evaluate the stress state. RESULTS: The volumes of pores in samples ranged from 3241µm3 to 1.29×109µm3 with the equivalent radius between 10µm to 680µm. Deviation of sphericity of pores ranged from 0.10 to 0.81 and the average of 99.97% pores was near 0.63. For the smaller pores their distribution tended to be uniform, while the larger pores were irregular with elongated ellipsoidal form and located at or near the veneer-core interface. During wedge loading blunt contact fracture testing 21 crowns failed from the fissure on the occlusal surface, of which 16 failed from surface or near surface pores, 2 from the midpoint of the oblique ridge, and 7 from larger interfacial pores. FEA analysis indicated that defects were detrimental to veneer integrity only in regions of tensile stress and where the pore radius associated with crack initiation ranged from 30 to 50µm. Pore morphology appeared to have only a minor effect on fracture. SIGNIFICANCE: Within the limitation of the microCT resolution and FEA, it suggests that pores radius large than 30-50µm and located in the tensile stress area like grooves and fissures on the occlusal surface or near surface as well as cervical margins of veneering porcelain will jeopardize the bilayered structure and mechanical integrity of LDG.

RESUMO

Large-scale airport construction removes large quantities of earth materials, resulting in serious environmental pollution and ecosystem damage. However, studies of environmental concerns caused by the materials used in airport construction are still preliminary, and those case studies on the impacts of large-scale offshore airport development are very limited. China's Dalian Offshore Airport is considered here to study the environmental value loss from 240 million m3 of materials excavations and 21 km2 of artificial island infillings. The findings show that the calculated annual environmental value loss for the development of the Dalian Offshore Airport is approximately US$7.75 million, including US$1.81 million and US$1.47 million of direct economic loss of timber resources and marine biology resources, respectively, and US$1.53 million and US$2.79 million value losses of forest and marine ecosystem services damaged caused by materials excavation and infilling, respectively. The conclusions of this study provide an important foundation to quantitatively analyse the environmental impact of the Dalian Offshore Airport's development and can be used as a reference for similar engineering and environment impact assessment programs.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate and characterize the distribution of fabrication defects in bilayered lithium disilicate glass-ceramic (LDG) crowns using micro-CT and 3D reconstruction. METHODS: Ten standardized molar crowns (IPS e.max Press; Ivoclar Vivadent) were fabricated by heat-pressing on a core and subsequent manual veneering. All crowns were scanned by micro-CT and 3D reconstructed. Volume, position and sphericity of each defect was measured in every crown. Each crown was divided into four regions-central fossa (CF), occlusal fossa (OF), cusp (C) and axial wall (AW). Porosity and number density of each region were calculated. Statistical analyses were performed using Welch two sample t-test, Friedman one-way rank sum test and Nemenyi post-hoc test. The defect volume distribution type was determined based on Akaike information criterion (AIC). RESULTS: The core ceramic contained fewer defects (p<0.001) than the veneer layer. The size of smaller defects, which were 95% of the total, obeyed a logarithmic normal distribution. Region CF showed higher porosity (p<0.001) than the other regions. Defect number density of region CF was higher than region C (p<0.001) and region AW (p=0.029), but no difference was found between region CF and OF (p>0.05). Four of ten specimens contained the largest pores in region CF, while for the remaining six specimens the largest pore was in region OF. SIGNIFICANCE: LDG core ceramic contained fewer defects than the veneer ceramic. LDG strength estimated from pore size was comparable to literature values. Large defects were more likely to appear at the core-veneer interface of occlusal fossa, while small defects also distributed in every region of the crowns but tended to aggregate in the central fossa region. Size distribution of small defects in veneer obeyed a logarithmic normal distribution.

RESUMO

A method was proposed to remove Cd from contaminated soils by a semi-solid culture containing Aspergillus fumigatus that have a strong resistance to Cd. The removal efficiencies of Cd in different simulated Cd pollution levels were studied and the changes in Cd adsorption and the enrichment in Aspergillus fumigatus were measured. The results showed that Aspergillus fumigatus could remove some Cd from the soil in the semi-solid culture system. When the concentration of Cd was 10 mg·kg-1, the total removal rate of Cd was up to 31%. Meanwhile, the dry weight of Aspergillus fumigatus and the pH of the system were studied during the culture process. The results showed that the dry weight decreased with the increase in culture time and Cd concentration, the maximum decrease rate of dry weight was 64%. The removal efficiency was the best when the pH was varied from 5.6 to 6.0. The changes in different extraction fractions for Cd showed that the main fractions of Cd removed by Aspergillus fumigatus were the acid-soluble fraction and the reducible fraction and the oxidizable fraction of Cd remained essentially unchanged before and after the culturing. The proposed method would provide valuable information for the remediation of heavy metal-contaminated soil by fungi.

RESUMO

Polymerase chain reaction denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (PCR-DGGE) was used to study the changes of glycoside hydrolase family 6 (GH6 family) genes during the composting of agricultural waste. In addition, a redundancy analysis (RDA) and Monte Carlo permutation test were applied to determine the relationship between the changes to the GH6 family genes and physico-chemical parameters. According to the relative magnitudes of the influence caused by these different parameters on the changes to GH6 family genes, the eight-ranked physico-chemical parameters were pH > pile temperature > total nitrogen (TN) > total organic matter (TOM) > C/N ratio > moisture content > ambient temperature > water soluble carbon (WSC). The eight physico-chemical parameters, which explained 83.1% of the variation of GH6 family genes, confirmed that these parameters had important effects on the GH6 family genes changes. The pH (P=0.002), pile temperature (P=0.004), and TN (P=0.004) had the most significant impacts on these changes. These three significant factors explained 24.92%, 15.57%, and 15.04% of the variation of GH6 family genes, respectively. There were different dominant species which contain GH6 family genes in different stages of composting. The diversity and abundance of GH6 family genes demonstrated these fluctuation trends. The t-value biplots based on the RDA showed that these three significant factors had either positive or negative correlations with the dynamic changes of GH6 family genes and the microbial species contained within GH6 family genes can be generally be divided into five types. The microbial community changes are reflected by the No. 4 to No. 10 bands and these had a significant positive correlation with pile temperature and a significant negative correlation with pH and TN. The microbial community changes reflected by the No. 20 to No. 23 bands had a significant positive correlation with pH and TN.

RESUMO

Bone metastasis is the most frequent type of distant metastasis in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). In this study, we investigated the correlation between the skull base bone destruction and the distant bone metastasis in patients with NPC. A total of 449 cases with NPC who were diagnosed and had definitive radiotherapy from 2001 to 2006 were enrolled in this study. The skull base bone destruction was diagnosed by computed tomography (CT) in all cases, and 191 patients also underwent magnetic resonance imaging scan. Kaplan-Meier method was adopted to perform the univariate analysis; Cox regression model was used to perform multivariate analysis to determine whether the skull base bone destruction when diagnosed by CT was an independent impact factor of the distant bone metastases. The group with skull base bone destruction had a distant bone metastases rate of 9.0% (14/155), whereas the group without skull base bone destruction had rate of 4.1% (12/294). The multivariate analysis showed that the skull base bone destruction, when diagnosed by CT, was an independent impact factor of the distant bone metastases-free survival in the early N-staging cases, but was not an independent impact factor when diagnosed by MRI. The skull base bone destruction diagnosed by CT in patients with NPC had predictive value for the distant bone metastases, especially for the early N-staging cases.

RESUMO

Equol (a bacterial metabolite of the soy isoflavone daidzein) is produced by 30% to 50% of humans and may be associated with health outcomes. We hypothesized that plasma equol would be inversely associated with risks of fibrocystic breast conditions (FBC) and breast cancer (BC). Plasma from women in a breast self-examination trial in Shanghai with BC (n=269) or FBC (n=443), and age-matched controls (n=1027) was analyzed for isoflavones. Equol was grouped into categories (<20, 20-<45, and ≥45nmol/L) and, among women with daidzein ≥20nmol/L, the log10 equol:daidzein ratio was grouped into tertiles. Where available, non-cancerous tissue (NCT) adjacent to the carcinomas from women with BC were classified as non-proliferative or proliferative (n=130 and 172, respectively). The lesions from women with FBC were similarly classified (n=99 and 92, respectively). Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated across equol categories and tertiles of log10 equol:daidzein ratio. Equol categories were not associated with FBC or BC (P>.05). For log10 equol:daidzein, compared to controls there were positive associations in the mid tertile for proliferative FBC (OR 2.06, 95% CI 1.08-3.93), BC with proliferative NCT (OR 2.95, 95% CI 1.37-6.35), and all BC regardless of histology (OR 2.37, 95% CI 1.43-3.95). However, trends in ORs with increasing plasma equol values or equol:daidzein ratios were not observed (P>.05). The results of this study do not provide evidence that equol plays a role in the etiology of these breast conditions. However, further work is needed to confirm or refute this conclusion.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the time-dose-response relationship of benvitimod cream after topical administration in patients with mild and moderate psoriasis vulgaris for dosage regimen exploring. METHODS: 36 patients with mild and moderate psoriasis vulgaris were randomly assigned to receive 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5%, and 0% (placebo) benvitimod cream of 30 g/1.7 m2 twice daily for 6 weeks. The primary efficacy outcome was the proportion of patients achieving more than 75% change of the psoriasis area and severity index (PASI 75) from baseline. A longitudinal Emax model was established using the NONMEM method, and then applied to try to find an appropriate dose for following trials. RESULTS: In the final time-dose-response model, the primary outcome at week 6 of PASI 75 of the 0.5%, 1.0%, and 1.5% benvitimod cream was 31%, 63%, and 75%, respectively, demonstrating that the 1.0% benvitimod cream was an appropriate dose for the next trial. The time parameters of ET50 and ET90 were 15 and 69 days for 1.0% benvitimod cream, indicating that the maximum efficacy of PASI change rate was obtained at approximately week 10. The accuracy of PASI change rate by extrapolation prediction was limited at week 10, so the treatment period should be longer in future trials. CONCLUSIONS: The established dose-response model could well describe the relationship between PASI change rate and doses of benvitimod cream in patients with mild and moderate psoriasis vulgaris. This modeling approach may help choose 1.0% benvitimod cream twice daily as a dosage regimen in following clinical trials.

RESUMO

The physiological mechanism and ecological structure of forest trees can change with the changes of years. In a certain extent, the changes were expressed through the canopy spectral features. The mastery of changing rules about spectral characteristics of trees over the years is benefit to remote sensing interpretation and provide scientific basis for the classification of different trees. The study adopted high-resolution spectrometer to measure the canopy spectral characteristics for seven major deciduous trees and seven evergreen trees to gain the spectrum curve of four different ages and calculate the first derivative curve. The analysis of changing rules about spectral characteristics of different deciduous trees and evergreen trees and the comparison of changes about spectrum of various trees in the visible and infrared band could find the best year and best band for identification of trees. The results showed that the canopy spectral reflectance of deciduous and evergreen trees increases with the increase of age. And the spectral changes of two species were most obvious in the near infrared band.

RESUMO

This study investigated the protective effect of ATP on skeletal muscle satellite cells damaged by H2O2in neonatal rats and the possible mechanism. The skeletal muscle satellite cells were randomly divided into four groups: normal group, model group (cells treated with 0.1 mmol/L H2O2for 50 s), protection group (cells treated with 16, 8, 4, 2, 1, 0.5, or 0.25 mmol/L ATP for 24 h, and then with 0.1 mmol/L H2O2for 50 s), proliferation group (cells treated with 16, 8, 4, 2, 1, 0.5, or 0.25 mmol/L ATP for 24 h). MTT assay, FITC+PI+DAPI fluorescent staining, Giemsa staining and immunofluorescence were performed to examine cell viability and apoptosis, and apoptosis-related proteins. The results showed that the survival rate of skeletal muscle satellite cells was decreased and the apoptosis rate was increased after H2O2treatment (P<0.01). Different doses of ATP had different effects on skeletal muscle satellite cells damaged by H2O2: the survival rate of muscle satellite cells treated with ATP at 4, 2, or 1 mmol/L was increased. The protective effect was most profound on cells treated with 2 mmol/L ATP. Immunofluorescence showed that ATP could increase the number of Bcl-2-positive cells (P<0.01) and decrease the number of the Bax-positive cells (P<0.01). It was concluded that ATP could protect skeletal muscle satellite cells against H2O2damage in neonatal rats, which may be attributed to the up-regulation of the expression of Bcl-2 and down-regulation of Bax, resulting in the suppression of apoptosis.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Although night-shift work has been associated with elevated risk of breast cancer in numerous epidemiologic studies, evidence is not consistent. We conducted a nested case-cohort study to investigate a possible association between shift work including a night shift and risk of breast cancer within a large cohort of women textile workers in Shanghai, China. METHODS: The study included 1,709 incident breast cancer cases and 4,780 non-cases. Data on historical shift work schedules were collected by categorized jobs from the factories, where the study subjects had worked, and then were linked to the complete work histories of each subject. No jobs in the factories involved exclusively night-shift work. Therefore, night shift was evaluated as part of a rotating shift work pattern. Hazard ratios and 95 % confidence intervals were calculated using Cox proportional hazards modeling adapted for the case-cohort design for years of night-shift work and the total number of nights worked. Additionally, analyses were repeated with exposures lagged by 10 and 20 years. RESULTS: We observed no associations with either years of night-shift work or number of nights worked during the entire employment period, irrespective of lag intervals. Findings from the age-stratified analyses were very similar to those observed for the entire study population. CONCLUSIONS: The findings from this study provide no evidence to support the hypothesis that shift work increases breast cancer risk. The positive association between shift work and breast cancer observed in Western populations, but not observed in this and other studies of the Chinese population, suggests that the effect of shift work on breast cancer risk may be different in Asian and Caucasian women.
